The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) evaluated an in‐situ application of a soil‐amendment process at a residential site that was contaminated with lead. The goal of the evaluation was to determine if the soil‐amendment process resulted in lower concentrations of bioavailable lead in the contaminated soils. The relative bioavailability of lead (bioaccessible lead) was measured by an in vitro test procedure that uses a highly acidic extraction procedure to simulate human digestive processes. The soil‐amendment demonstration showed that the 11.2 percent mean reduction in bioavailable lead concentration between untreated and treated soils was not statistically different. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Modification of soil humic matter after 4 years of compost application   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Two soil plots, 1 ha each, were amended yearly for 4 years, respectively, with 35.8 and 71.6 Mg ha(-1) yr(-1) of mature compost (CM) obtained from food and vegetable residues. The compost, amended soils, and a control soil plot after 4 years (S4), were analyzed for humin (HUC), humic acid (HAC), fulvic acid (FAC), and non-humic carbon (NHC) content. Compared to S4, the amended soil contained more humified C (HAC, FAC and HUC) and less NHC. Further evidence of the effect of compost on soil organic matter was obtained by the analysis of the humic acid (HA) fractions isolated from both the compost and the soils. These were characterized by elemental analyses and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transformed spectroscopy. The HAs isolated from CM and from S4 were significantly different. The HAs isolated from the amended plots were more similar to HA isolated from CM than to HA isolated from S4. The experimental data of this work indicate that the compost application may affect significantly the soil organic matter composition, and that the approach used in this work allows one to trace the fate of compost organic matter in soil.  相似文献

Leaching experiments of rebuilt soil columns with two simulated acid rain solutions (pH 4.6–3.8) were conducted for two natural soils and two artificial contaminated soils from Hunan, south-central China, to study effects of acid rain on competitive releases of soil Cd, Cu, and Zn. Distilled water was used in comparison. The results showed that the total releases were Zn>Cu>Cd for the natural soils and Cd>Zn≫Cu for the contaminated soils, which reflected sensitivity of these metals to acid rain. Leached with different acid rain, about 26–76% of external Cd and 11–68% external Zn were released, but more than 99% of external Cu was adsorbed by the soils, and therefore Cu had a different sorption and desorption pattern from Cd and Zn. Metal releases were obviously correlated with releases of TOC in the leachates, which could be described as an exponential equation. Compared with the natural soils, acid rain not only led to changes in total metal contents, but also in metal fraction distributions in the contaminated soils. More acidified soils had a lower sorption capacity to metals, mostly related to soil properties such as pH, organic matter, soil particles, adsorbed SO4 2−, exchangeable Al3+ and H+, and contents of Fe2O3 and Al2O3.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effectiveness of gypsum and three proprietary products to remediate brine‐contaminated soil. The research objective was to determine if additives could increase plant cover germination in soils without costly prior soil‐washing or dilution techniques. The soil was shredded using a soil shredder equipped with a spray bar to apply the individual treatments of DeSalt Plus, SoilTech, Chlor*rid, and calcium sulfate (gypsum). Treatments were placed in 40‐mm high‐density polyethylene cells and small drainage systems were installed to allow removal of excess water. An initial 10‐point soil composite was taken from bulk untreated soils at a depth of more than 2.5 cm. Five‐point composite samples were collected from the same depth at weekly intervals and analyzed for: electrical conductivity, sodium adsorption ratio, cation exchange capacity, sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides, and pH. The Gapon selectivity coefficient was calculated and utilized to quantify the affinity for binding between ionic alkali salt constituent groups Na+, Ca ++, and Mg ++. Soil analysis indicated product‐related improvements in and bioavailability of salts. The nature of the products requires some prior treatment such as soil washing or dilution using clean soil to lower electroconductivity levels and allow the site to vegetate.  相似文献

Heavy metal–resistant bacterial strains were isolated from heavy metal–contaminated soils and identified as Bacillus sp. and Leclercia adecarboxylata on the basis of their morphology and biochemical characters using the VITEK 2 Systems Version 05.02. The heavy metal and antibiotic resistance of the isolates were studied. A green house pot experiment was conducted to examine the bacterial ability to extract the lead in soils and for their effect on lead uptake by Ricinus communis in an artificially contaminated soil. Bacterial inoculated pots increased the biomass of the R. communis compared to the uninoculated control, and the root growth of the plant was also increased in the inoculated pot. The experimental data confirmed that lead‐resistant bacteria have a pronounced effect on heavy metal uptake in plants, which may provide a new bacterially assisted phytoremediation of metal‐contaminated soils. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In situ chemical fixation represents a promising and potentially cost‐effective treatment alternative for metal‐contaminated soils. This article presents the findings of the use of iron‐bearing soil amendments to reduce the leachability and bioaccessibility of arsenic in soils impacted by stack fallout from a zinc smelter. The focus of this investigation was to reduce the lead bioaccessibility of the soils through addition with phosphorus‐bearing amendments. However, as phosphorus addition was expected to increase arsenic mobility, the fixation strategy also incorporated use of iron‐bearing amendments to offset or reverse these effects. The findings of this investigation demonstrated that inclusion of iron‐bearing chemicals in the amendment formulation reduced arsenic leachability and bioaccessibility without compromising amendment effectiveness for reducing lead bioaccessibility. These results suggest that in situ chemical fixation has the potential to be an effective strategy for treatment of the impacted soils. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Elevated levels of arsenic can pose a major threat to both human health and the environment. The phytoremediation of heavy metals from soil is emerging as a cost‐effective technology for the remediation of contaminated soils. The present greenhouse study was undertaken to identify plants capable of tolerating and accumulating high concentrations of arsenic. Asparagus fern and rye grass were found to tolerate and accumulate more than 1,100 ppm of arsenic in plant tissue. Arsenic uptake as affected by different levels of the chelating agent trans‐1, 2‐ cyclohexylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid (CDTA) and soil pH were also studied. The application of 5 mmol kg?1 of CDTA to arsenic‐contaminated medium loam field soil enhanced the accumulation of arsenic by the test plants. Under these conditions, plants accumulated up to 1,400 ppm of arsenic as compared to 950 ppm by the plants grown in soil containing 1,200 ppm of arsenic but without any amendment of the chelating agent. Plants grown in field soil of pH 5 containing 300 ppm of arsenic absorbed higher concentrations of arsenic than at other tested pH levels. Corresponding reductions in arsenic content of soil after plant harvests were observed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This article describes the utility of Spizizen medium in effecting the release of 2,4 dinitrotoluene (DNT) from plasticized propellant in aged clay soil and of added Pseudomonas organisms in enhancing the rate of degradation of DNT in clay and sandy soils. DNT is an environmental problem because of its toxicity to mammals. It is proposed that the citrate in Spizizen medium chelates metals that form the aggregates of humin in aged clay soils, thereby releasing propellant components. Lack of awareness of DNT mobilization by citrate or other polyanions may lead to a potential underestimation of the 2,4 DNT present in aged contaminated soil and a potential increased release of DNT following exposure to solvents containing citrate or other polyanions. DNT in contaminated sandy soils was rapidly degraded when Pseudomonas and Spizizen medium were added (85% degraded in 20 days). Pseudomonas isolated/Torn soils at the Badger Plant have particular utility for the in situ degradation of 2,4 DNT in clay and sandy soils because they metabolize Spizizen medium, thrive in diverse climates, and have been selected for their ability to grow in soils contaminated with DNT. Mixture of either the contaminated clay soil or the contaminated sandy soil with uncontaminated prairie silt loam (20:80 ratio) facilitated management of the treatment process. This observation is important because of the widespread distribution, and hence low cost, of this soil type in the central United States.  相似文献

This article presents a bench‐scale study performed to investigate the removal of heavy metals when they exist individually and in combination in soils. Electrokinetic experiments were conducted using two types of clayey soils, kaolin and glacial till. These soils were contaminated with Cr(VI) only, with Ni(II) only, and with Cr(VI), Ni(II), and Cd(II) combined. It was found that in kaolin, a significant pH variation occurred due to electric potential application, affecting the adsorption‐desorption and dissolution‐precipitation, as well as the extent of migration of the contaminants. In glacial till, however, pH changes were not affected significantly. In both kaolin and glacial till, the migration of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) was higher when they were present individually compared to when they existed together with Cd(II). Cr(VI) migration as single or combined contaminant was lower in kaolin as compared to that in glacial till. This result was due to the low pH conditions created near the anode region in kaolin that led to high Cr(VI) adsorption to the clay surfaces. In glacial till, however, nickel precipitated with or without the presence of co‐contaminants due to high pH conditions in the soil. Overall, this study demonstrates that adsorption, precipitation, and reduction are the significant hindering mechanisms for the removal of heavy metals using electrokinetic remediation. The direction of the contaminant migration and overall removal efficiency depend on the polarity of the contaminant, the presence of co‐contaminants, and the type of soil. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons.  相似文献

Phytoextraction is the plant‐based removal of inorganic contaminants from the soil by root absorption and subsequent translocation to harvestable plant parts. The efficiency of this technique is limited by the phytoavailability of these contaminants in the soil and the root‐to‐shoot transport. To enhance the phytoextraction efficiency, the use of soil amendments has been widely investigated. Potential risks such as increased ecotoxicological effects and leaching of mobilized contaminants caution against the use of persistent mobilizing agents. The potential use of foliar amendments to enhance mineral absorption and/or translocation offers prospects for complementing or substituting soil amendments for enhanced phytoextraction purposes. This study presents an explorative screening to evaluate the feasibility of this approach. Helianthus annuus giganteus plants were grown in moderately contaminated dredged sediment for ten weeks, with daily foliar treatments from week six onward: (1) distilled water (control), (2) magnesium‐ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Mg‐EDTA), (3) diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), (4) nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), (5) citric acid, (6) oxalic acid, (7) calcium acetate, (8) ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN), and (9) cystein. Applied doses varied between treatments based on plant tolerance: 15 μmol per plant for cystein, 60 μmol per plant for DTPA and NH4SCN, 180 μmol per plant for Mg‐EDTA and NTA and 400 μmol per plant for the organic acids. At the end of the experiment, shoot accumulation of cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc was evaluated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this applied study, the effects of short‐term storage at 22°C, 6°C, and ?25°C on the numbers of microorganisms enumerated were examined with soils collected from a petrochemical contaminated soil containing multiple contaminants including phenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and petroleum hydrocarbons. Short term storage of soils at refrigerator temperature did not significantly change the number of microorganisms compared to those in the fresh soil (0 days of storage); however, at ?25°C there was a slight decrease in the phenol utilizers and total viable count (TVC). Long‐term storage caused a significant decrease in the number of phenol utilizers in the petrochemical‐contaminated soil samples. Chemical dispersing agents were used in an attempt to increase the extraction of microorganisms from naphthalene contaminated soil which were predominantly clay soils. These did not significantly change the enumeration of naphthalene utilizers or TVC. While these results are not unexpected from current research and knowledge of microbial community succession in laboratory environments, the results from the applied nature of this study confirm that it is best practice to keep soil samples designated for bacterial enumeration for the shortest possible time, and not longer than 1–2 weeks, and at refrigerated temperature (6°C) in preference to room (22°C) or deep freezer (?18°C) temperatures.  相似文献

The combination of electrokinetic and zero‐valent iron (ZVI) treatments were used to treat soils contaminated with chlorinated solvents, including dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL), at an active industrial site in Ohio. The remediation systems were installed in tight clay soils under truck lots and entrances to loading docks without interruption to facility production. The electrokinetic system, called LasagnaTM, uses a direct current electrical field to mobilize contaminant via electroosmosis and soil heating. The contaminants are intercepted and reduced in situ using treatment zones containing ZVI. In moderately contaminated soils around the LasagnaTM‐treated source areas, a grid of ZVI filled boreholes were emplaced to passively treat residual contamination in decades instead of centuries. The remediation systems were installed below grade and did not interfere with truck traffic during the installation and three years of operation. The LasagnaTM systems removed 80 percent of the trichloroethylene (TCE) mass while the passive ZVI borings system has reduced the TCE by 40 percent. The remediation goals have been met and the site is now in monitoring‐only mode as natural attenuation takes over. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In the present work desorption tests of an artificially contaminated soil by naphatelene sulphonated compounds have been carried out by soil washing realised by water at different pH: Naphtalene-1,5-disulfonic acid (1-5 NDS), 2-naphthol-6,8 disulphonic acid (G-acid) and sodium beta-naphtalene-sulphonate (beta-salt) have been selected as more representative organic compounds present in the ex industrial site of ACNA (Cengio, SV, Italy) in which very serious contamination levels of several pollutants are present both in the soils and surface waters. Equilibrium batch tests have been carried out in order to find the best operative condition in column washing tests. The obtained results can be considered very preliminary but useful to arrange a next experimental work that will be realised on real contaminated soils.  相似文献

Biological and chemical stabilization of organic C was assessed in soils sampled from the long-term experiments at Rothamsted (UK), representing a wide range of carbon inputs and managements by extracting labile, non-humified organic matter (NH) and humic substances (HS). Four sequentially extracted humic substances fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) were extracted and characterized before and after a 215-day laboratory incubation at 25 degrees C from two arable soils, a woodland soil and an occasionally stubbed soil. The fractions corresponded to biochemically stabilised SOM extracted in 0.5M NaOH (free fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA)) and chemically plus biochemically stabilised SOM extracted from the residue with 0.1M Na4P2O7 plus 0.1M NaOH (bound FA and HA). Our aim was to investigate the effects of chemical and biochemical stabilization on carbon sequestration. The non-humic to humic (NH/H) C ratio separated the soils into two distinct groups: arable soils (unless fertilised with farmyard manure) had an NH/H C ratio between 1.05 and 0.71, about twice that of the other soils (0.51-0.26). During incubation a slow, but detectable, decrease in the NH/H C ratio occurred in soils of C input equivalent or lower to 4Mgha(-1)y(-1), whereas the ratio remained practically constant in the other soils. Before incubation the free to bound humic C ratio increased linearly (R2=0.91) with C inputs in the soils from the Broadbalk experiment and decreased during incubation, showing that biochemical stabilization is less effective than chemical stabilization in preserving humic C. Changes in delta13C and delta15N after incubation were confined to the free FA fractions. The delta13C of free FA increased by 1.48 and 0.80 per thousand, respectively, in the stubbed and woodland soils, indicating a progressive biological transformation. On the contrary, a decrease was observed for the bound FA of both soils. Concomitantly, a Deltadelta15N of up to +3.52 per thousand was measured after incubation in the free FA fraction and a -2.58 Deltadelta15N in the bound FA. These changes, which occurred during soil incubation in the absence of C inputs, indicate that free FA fractions were utilised by soil microorganisms, and bound FA were decomposed and replaced, in part, by newly synthesized FA. The 13CPMAS-TOSS NMR spectra of free HA extracted before and after 215 days of incubation were mostly unchanged. In contrast, changes were evident in bound HA and showed an increase in aromatic C after incubation.  相似文献

The present work undertaken in the environmental context aims to study the distribution of heavy metals in plants that grow naturally around uncontrolled landfills. The study's goal was to identify plants that can be used to remediate contaminated soils. For this purpose, 14 plants species and their rhizospheric soil samples were collected and analyzed for arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc by inductively coupled plasma‐atomic emission spectrometry. The results showed the presence of elevated metal concentrations in soil, many exceeding the regulatory values, and that many species exhibited an ability to accumulate multiple metals in their shoots and roots without sustaining toxicity. This was confirmed by bioconcentration and translocation factors generally higher than 1.  相似文献

A compost isolated humic acid-like (cHAL) material was pointed out in previous work for its potential as auxiliary in chemical technology. Its potential is based on its relatively low 0.4gL(-1) critical micellar concentration (cmc) in water, which enables cHAL to enhance the water solubility of hydrophobic substances, like phenanthrene, when used at higher concentrations than 0.4gL(-1). This material could be obtained from a 1:1 v/v mixture of municipal solid and lignocellulosic wastes composted for 15 days. The compost, containing 69.3% volatile solids, 39.6% total organic C and 21C/N ratio, was extracted for 24h at 65 degrees C under N2 with aqueous 0.1molL(-1) NaOH and 0.1molL(-1) Na4P2O7, and the solution was acidified to separate the precipitated cHAL in 12% yield from soluble carbohydrates and other humic and non-humic substances. In this work two typical applications of surfactants, i.e., textile dyeing (TD) and soil remediation by washing (SW), were chosen as grounds for testing the performance of the cHAL biosurfactant against the one of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), which is a well established commercial synthetic surfactant. The TD trials were carried out with nylon 6 microfiber and a water insoluble dye, while the SW tests were performed with two soils contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) for several decades. Performances were rated in the TD experiments based on the fabric colour intensity (DeltaE) and uniformity (sigmaDeltaE), and in the SW experiments based on the total hydrocarbons concentration (CWPAH) and on the residual surfactant (Cre) concentrations in the washing solution equilibrated with the contaminated soils. The results show that both cHAL and SDS exhibit enhanced performance when applied above their cmc values. However, while in the TD case a significant performance effect was observed at the surfactants cmc value, in the SW case the required surfactants concentration values were equivalent to 25-125xcmc for cHAL and to 4-22xcmc for SDS. The vis-a-vis comparison of the two surfactants gave the following results: in the TD case the cHAL biosurfactant at 0.4gL(-1) yields good colour intensity and equal colour uniformity as SDS at 5gL(-1), in the SW case cHAL was found to enhance CWPAH by a factor of 2-4 relative to SDS with one soil, whereas with the other soil the two surfactants behaved similarly. The Cre data, however, showed that both soils absorbed by far more SDS (68-95%) than cHAL (12-54%). The results point out intriguing technological and environmental perspectives deriving from the use of compost isolated biosurfactants in the place of synthetic surfactants.  相似文献

In this study, the growth performance and nutritional quality of Telfairia occidentalis planted in soil polluted with varied levels of water‐soluble fraction (WSF) of crude oil (Bonny light) were evaluated to assess the effectiveness of organic nutrients (poultry manure and sawdust) in the phytore mediation of WSF‐contaminated soil. The results showed that WSF application delayed germination of vegetables. However, treatment of soils with organic nutrients enhanced the germination rate of vegetables, promoted greenish coloration of leafs and increased the levels of energy‐yielding macronutrients (carbohydrate, lipid, and protein). Also, soils supplemented with poultry manure gave the highest caloric values for all the percentages of WSF studied, followed by sawdust. Our findings suggest that the adverse effects of WSF on soil could be remediated through organic nutrient supplementation. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Over the years, many soils have been contaminated with toxic heavy metals as a result of a variety of industrial and military activities. Electrokinetic soil treatment is an emerging technology that could prove to be very effective in the remediation of these sites. “Real-world” heavy metal contaminated (Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III)) soils from three military sites with varying soil properties were subjected to electrokinetic treatment in the laboratory. Metal extractants (chelating agents and acids) were studied and found to be effective in enhancing the electrokinetic process. Results indicated that heavy metal removal efficiencies varied in the three soils tested. In one case, removal efficiencies of 90 percent and 60 percent were obtained for Cd and Cr, respectively, for the nitric acid amended experiments. For another case, over 60 percent of the total Pb in the system was deposited near the cathode for the non-amended and the citric-acid amended tests. Conversely, in the third case, the electrokinetic soil-washing treatment process failed to produce significant removal of any metal contaminant. The discrepancies that exist between the metal removal results of the three soils were attributed to the different physiochemical characteristics of each soil.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to determine a feasible and practical phytoremediation strategy for Zn-contaminated soils. The aim of the first study was to identify promising plant species capable of Zn remediation for the soils and climatic conditions of British Columbia. The purpose of the second study was to assess the effects of soil amendments in modifying the soil properties and providing the right conditions for the plants to immobilise Zn. Promising plants for phytostabilisation in the first study (Lolium perenne, Festuca rubra and Poa pratensis) were tested in the presence of soil amendments (lime, phosphate and compost, both individually and in combination) in the second study. The efficiency of treatments to stabilise Zn was based on Zn fractionation in the soil and on absorption and partitioning of Zn in plants. Maximum Zn immobilisation was achieved in the soil by a combination of lime, phosphate and compost, in conjunction with growth of P. pratensis.  相似文献
