The absolute accuracy and long-term precision of atmospheric measurements hinge on the quality of the instrumentation and calibration standards. To assess the consistency of the ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) standards maintained at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), these standards were compared through the gas-phase titration of O3 with nitric oxide (NO). NO and O3 were monitored using chemiluminescence and UV absorption, respectively. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was monitored directly by laser-induced fluorescence and indirectly by catalytic conversion to NO, followed by chemiluminescence. The observed equivalent loss of both NO and O3 and the formation of NO2 in these experiments was within 1% on average over the range of 40-200 nmol mol(-1) of NO in excess O3, indicating that these instruments, when calibrated with the NIST O3 and NO standards and the NO2 permeation calibration system, are consistent to within 1% at tropospherically relevant mixing ratios of O3. Experiments conducted at higher initial NO mixing ratios or in excess NO are not in as good agreement. The largest discrepancies are associated with the chemiluminescence measurements. These results indicate the presence of systematic biases under these specific conditions. Prospects for improving these experiments are discussed.  相似文献

2009年3—5月,采用NO-NO2-NH3分析仪和O3分析仪对南京市北郊大气O3、NO、NO2和NOx浓度进行连续观测,研究南京北郊春季大气臭氧与氮氧化物浓度变化特征。结果表明:O3浓度的日变化呈单峰型结构,白天较高,夜晚较低,在06:00左右出现最低值,14:00左右出现峰值,且工作日的O3浓度值明显高于周末的O3浓度值。NOx的日变化呈现双峰型变化规律,早上07:00左右出现第1个峰值,下午14:00—15:00左右达到最低值,午夜23:00左右出现第2个峰值。从3—5月份,NO浓度明显下降,3月份的变化幅度比较大;NO2浓度则明显上升,5月份变化幅度较大。3—5月NO与O3之间呈显著的负相关关系,4—5月NO2、NOx与O3呈显著的负相关关系。  相似文献

An evaluation of the NO, NO2 and O3 concentrations in downtown Caracas atmosphere at two different heights (1.5 and 56 m ) during the dry and wet season was performed.The qualitative variation of NO and NO2 concentrations throughout the day was the same for all conditions. The profiles are explained considering the automobile emissions and the fates by photochemical reactions and dispersion. The daily mean averages for NOx exceed all available air quality standards, making the downtown Caracas air polluted with these compounds at harmful levels.The O3 concentrations are lower than the natural background levels practically all day long for all conditions. This lack of O3 is explained mainly by the very high continuous NO emissions occuring in Caracas. NO reacts very fast with O3 consuming all the O3 produced by photochemical reactions. Possible health implications of the low O3 levels are pointed out.  相似文献

For computational reasons, evaluations of NO(x) emission controls usually concentrate on either episodic or annual impacts on pollution or deposition levels. However, previously published model results indicate that the consequences of NO(x) controls can be quite different on these different time scales. In this paper we analyse the impact of a consistent set of NO(x) control scenarios on both the episodic and annual time-scales. Using similar models, we compute levels of episode peak O(3) and NO(2) and annual NO(y)-N and total N deposition at three locations in Europe due to six emission scenarios derived from OECD estimates. An NO(x) control scenario which reduces European emissions by 63%, only results in total annual N deposition reductions of 19, 36 and 26% at the three locations examined because of the influence of ammonia-nitrogen deposition. The same scenario results in either increases or decreases in episode peak O(3) due to the influence of hydrocarbons. Emission reduction strategies should take into account not only NO(x) emissions, but emissions of other pollutants, such as hydrocarbons and ammonia.  相似文献

Fluxes of NO, NO2 and O3 were determined over a drained marshland pasture in south-east England by using flux-gradient techniques. Nitric oxide was found to be emitted at rates of up to 40 ng m(-2) s(-1), the rate of emission being related to the magnitude of the eddy diffusivity. Nitrogen dioxide deposited at rates of up to 90 ng m(-2) s(-1) under the control of stomatal resistance, a clear diurnal cycle being observed. Minimum canopy resistance was of the order of 80 s m(-1). Ozone deposition was also controlled by stomatal resistance, the minimum canopy resistance being around 100 s m(-1) and fluxes reaching a maximum of 220 ng m(-2) s(-1). Corrections made to NO and NO2 fluxes to compensate for chemical reactions showed flux divergences of the order of 30% for NO and NO2, but these were not statistically significantly different from the measured fluxes. The pasture was found to be a net sink for nitrogen in the form of NOx.  相似文献

A mathematical dry deposition model was developed and an experiment performed to verify that the interfacial transfer velocity (V(S)) of ozone dry deposition includes the interfacial reactive velocity (V(Sr)) and interfacial kinetic velocity (V(Sk)), as determined by measuring the ozone depletion over agricultural field soils in a dry deposition chamber. Experimental results indicate that the chemical reaction (O3 + NO --> NO2 + O2) produces the reactive velocity. Observed interfacial transfer velocities depend on nitrogen oxide emission (NO) and soil temperature (T(S)). Additionally, observed kinetic velocities of conditioned field soils increased linearly with soil temperature. Moreover, observed reactive velocities of field soils increased exponentially with soil temperature, and depend on the emission rate of nitrogen oxide. Results in this study demonstrate that interfacial transfer velocities are variable velocities for long-term transportation, that influenced factors are chemical kinetics, thermodynamics and biochemical mechanisms.  相似文献

Four-year-old spruce clones (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) cultivated in sand and provided with a complete nutrient solution, or a solution deficient in magnesium and calcium, were exposed to the pollutant mixtures SO(2)/NO(2), O(3)/NO(2), and O(3)/SO(2)/NO(2), at realistic concentrations for 32 weeks. Fumigation caused a slight increase of total N contents in current year needles, whereas in one-year-old needles N concentrations did not change. The response of nitrate reductase activity to pollutant stress depended on needle age and nutrient supply, respectively. In one-year-old needles fumigation resulted in a significant inhibition of enzyme activity, particularly in Mg and Ca deficient trees. The combination of all three components proved to be most effective in causing a decrease by 60% compared to the control. In contrast, nitrate reductase activity was stimulated in current year needles, especially by O(3)/NO(2) and O(3)/SO(2)/NO(2). Changes in the activity of nitrate and nitrite reductases are considered as a factor contributing to the high phytotoxic potential of pollutant combinations with NO(2).  相似文献

Previous experiments with conifers fumigated with O(3), produced by air-operated electric discharge ozonators, have provided evidence that O(3) increases the leaching of NO(3)(-), NH(4)(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+) and some other cations from needles, when the trees are treated with acid mist. This evidence has provided the foundation of the ozone-acid mist hypothesis of spruce decline. We report experiments with Norway spruce saplings fumigated with purified and unpurified O(3). The results show that the accumulation of NO(3)(-) in the needles arises from the rapid deposition of N(2)O(5) and HNO(3) formed from N(2) in the ozonator. An increase in removal of NH(4)(+), Na(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Zn(2+) and Mn(2+) from the needles during soaking in H(2)SO(4), pH3, was also observed, which was related to the increase in NO(3)(-) but was independent of O(3) concentration. It is concluded that results of previous experiments cited in support of the ozone-acid mist hypothesis arose from effects which were at least partly caused by N(2)O(5) produced as a contaminant, and were incorrectly attributed to ozone. Other effects, such as growth stimulations, visible symptons, enhanced frost sensitivity, and infestation by pests or pathogens, which have been attributed to O(3) generated by electric discharge in air, should be interpreted with caution. Future experiments with ozone must eliminate this problem by either using O(2)-driven ozonators, or by purifying the output from air-driven ozonators using cold and/or water traps.  相似文献

This study investigates several factors that could influence ozone chemistry occurring in subsonic aircraft plumes in the upper troposphere. The study focuses on uncertainties in gas-phase rate parameters, but also examines the influence of selected heterogeneous reactions, the rate of expansion of the plume, ambient and initial plume concentrations, and the time of emissions. Monte Carlo analysis with Latin hypercube sampling was applied to an expanding box model of an aircraft plume, in order to estimate the sensitivities of O3 perturbations (ΔO3) to uncertainties in rate constants in the RADM2 chemical mechanism. The resulting coefficient of variation in ΔO3 at the end of a 36 h simulation was about 50%. Influential uncertainties in gas-phase rate parameters include those for photolysis of NO2 and HCHO, O3+NO, HO2+NO, and formation of PAN and HNO3. With high background concentrations of non-methane hydrocarbons, uncertainties in rate parameters of reactions involving peroxy radicals from ethene and propene oxidation were also influential. The coefficient of variation for ΔO3 due to uncertainties in emission indices of NOx, CO, and organic compounds was less than 15%. The effects of the heterogeneous reaction of N2O5 leading to HNO3 formation, and hypothesized reactions of HNO3 and NO2 on soot, were also investigated. The results suggest that the latter two reactions could be influential for ΔO3 if published estimates of reaction probabilities and high estimates of soot concentrations in plumes are realistic.  相似文献

This study aims to design a dry deposition chamber and to measure ozone depletion over the Taichung field soil. This study seeks to verify the phenomena by an experimental and mathematical model. It is demonstrated that interfacial mass transfer resistances of ozone dry deposition involve reactive resistance (R(sr)) and kinetic resistance (R(sk)). It reveals the chemical reaction (O3 + NO --> NO2) to produce the reactive resistance, and verifies that the interfacial mass transfer resistances depend on nitrogen oxide emission and soil temperature. It shows that the interfacial mass transfer resistances are reduced with increasing soil temperature (T(S)). The model profiles are smaller than the observed data within a relative error of 15%. The reactive resistance decreases exponentially with increasing soil temperature; R(sr)(-1) (cm x sec(-1)) = 0.0001 exp (0.1455T(S)). The kinetic resistance decreases linearly with increasing soil temperature; R(sk)(-1)(cm x sec(-1)) = 0.0108T(S) + 1.4012. This model is more accurate with higher soil temperature and larger ozone concentration. Results are consistent with thermodynamics and reaction kinetics. Ozone dry deposition over agricultural soil causes conversion of nitrogen oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO2).  相似文献

Reduced ozone by air filtration consistently improved grain yield in wheat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study considered effects of reduced [O3] on wheat yield. Open-top chamber charcoal filtered air treatments were compared with non-filtered treatments for field-grown wheat. 30 experiments meeting requirements were found, representing nine countries in North America, Europe and Asia. 26 experiments reported improved yield and 4 experiments reduced yield by filtration, a significant positive effect. Average yield improvement was 9%. Average daytime [O3] was reduced by filtration from 35 to 13 nmol mol−1. Filtration efficiency was 63% for O3 and 56% for SO2. For NOx it was observed that NO2 was reduced and NO increased by filtration. Thus, filters convert NO2 to NO. Most experiments reported low or very low [SO2] and [NOx]. Thus, O3 can be concluded to be the main phytotoxic component in the experiments. Elevated [NO2] was observed in one experiment. The conclusion is that current [O3] over large parts of the world adversely affect wheat yield.  相似文献

Natural emissions adopted in current regional air quality modeling are updated to better describe natural background ozone and PM concentrations for North America. The revised natural emissions include organosulfur from the ocean, NO from lightning, sea salt, biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors, and pre-industrial levels of background methane. The model algorithm for SOA formation was also revised. Natural background ozone concentrations increase by up to 4 ppb in annual average over the southeastern US and Gulf of Mexico due to added NO from lightning while the revised biogenic emissions produced less ozone in the central and western US. Natural PM2.5 concentrations generally increased with the revised natural emissions. Future year (2018) simulations were conducted for several anthropogenic emission reduction scenarios to assess the impact of the revised natural emissions on anthropogenic emission control strategies. Overall, the revised natural emissions did not significantly alter the ozone responses to the emissions reductions in 2018. With revised natural emissions, ozone concentrations were slightly less sensitive to reducing NOx in the southeastern US than with the current natural emissions due to higher NO from lightning. The revised natural emissions have little impact on modeled PM2.5 responses to anthropogenic emission reductions. However, there are substantial uncertainties in current representations of natural sources in air quality models and we recommend that further study is needed to refine these representations.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that the ozone concentrations experienced during photochemical episodes over large areas of Europe may exceed levels at which adverse environmental effects could be expected. These peak ozone concentrations can be reduced by controlling atmospheric emissions of the hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide precursors. For ozone control to be successful over the spatial scale of Europe, long term international cooperation is required in the formulation of emission abatement strategies. A significant barrier to rapid progress has been the complexity of the processes that describe ozone formation. Highly sophisticated computer models of chemistry and transport have, up to now, been the only means to study the impact of abatement strategies. An alternative approach has been adopted here involving the development of a simplified long range transport model for ozone based on the analysis of over 60 experimental runs of a photochemical trajectory model applied to a wide range of hydrocarbon-nitrogen oxide emission combinations. Using the ozone-precursor relationship obtained, it has been possible to examine various policy options in the European context. Although taken together, three illustrative emission control scenarios reduce NO(x) and hydrocarbon emissions substantially through controls on motor vehicle exhaust, large combustion plant and solvent usage, a significant potential for photochemical ozone formation and long range transport may still remain after their implementation. The extents of precursor emission abatement that will be required, if the potential for ozone formation is to be reduced below published air quality criteria guidelines or critical levels, have been determined for each European country. The implied reductions in NO(x) and hydrocarbons relative to current levels amount to between 50 and 90%.  相似文献

Since the mid-1970s, ozone (O3) levels in portions of California's South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB) on weekends have been as high as or higher than levels on weekdays, even though emissions of O3 precursors are lower on weekends. Analysis of the ambient data indicates that the intensity and spatial extent of the weekend O3 effect are correlated with-day-of-week variations in the extent of O3 inhibition caused by titration with nitric oxide (NO), reaction of hydroxyl radical (OH) with nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and rates of O3 accumulation. Lower NO mixing ratios and higher NO2/oxides of nitrogen (NOx) ratios on weekend mornings allow O3 to begin accumulating approximately an hour earlier on weekends. The weekday/weekend differences in the duration of O3 accumulation remained relatively constant from 1981 to 2000. In contrast, the rate of O3 accumulation decreased by one-third to one-half over the same period; the largest reductions occurred in the central basin on weekdays. Trends in mixing ratios of O3 precursors show a transition to lower volatile organic compound (VOC)/NOx ratios caused by greater reductions in VOC emissions. Reductions in VOC/NOx ratios were greater on weekdays, resulting in higher VOC/NOx ratios on weekends relative to weekdays. Trends in VOC/NOx ratios parallel the downward trend in peak O3 levels, a shift in the location of peak O3 from the central to the eastern portion of the basin, and an increase in the magnitude and spatial extent of the weekend O3 effect.  相似文献

Analyses of ambient measured ozone data were used in conjunction with the application of photochemical modeling to determine the technical feasibility of attaining the federal 8-hr ozone standard in central California. Various combinations of volatile organic compound (VOC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission reductions were effective in lowering modeled peak 1-hr ozone concentrations. However, VOC emissions reductions were found to have only a modest impact on modeled peak 8-hr ozone concentrations. NOx emission reductions generally lowered 8-hr ozone concentrations, but their effectiveness was partially or, in some cases, wholly offset by the increase in the number of NO cycles and, hence, in the ozone produced per NO. As a result, substantial NOx emission reductions--70 to 90%--were required to reduce peak 8-hr ozone concentrations to the level of the standard throughout the modeling domain. These modeling results provide a possible physical explanation for recent analyses that have reported more prominent trends in peak 1-hr ozone levels than in peak 8-hr ozone concentrations or in occurrences of mid-level (60-90 parts per billion by volume) ozone concentrations. The findings also have serious implications for the feasibility of attaining the 8-hr ozone standard in central California. Further efforts are needed to clarify the applicability of the modeling results to the full set of days with ozone levels exceeding the 8-hr ozone standard, as well as their applicability to other geographical areas.  相似文献

The levels of photochemical air pollutants: O3, NO and NO2, were monitored in Athens and in the neighbouring region of the Mesogia plain (Spata, Artemis and Markopoulo) from 1 May–31 August 2000. Phytodetection of ozone was also conducted using bioindicator plants of Bel-W3 and Zichnomirodata (KK6/5) tobacco varieties. The average maximum daily O3 concentration was 60–75 ppb, while the 24 hour average ranged from 40–65 ppb. The AOT40 (ppb hours) index was very high in Athens (16 679 over 121 days), Spata (16 325 over 110 days), Artemis (8093 over 22 days) and Markopoulo (18 646 over 113 days), suggesting potentially phytotoxic ozone levels. The ozone bioindicator plants of Bel-W3 and KK6/5 tobacco varieties were highly injured in all regions confirming the phytotoxicity of those ozone levels. The levels of NO and NO2 recorded at the three stations, in the Mesogia plain, were considerably lower than those occurring in Athens. The data presented here provide important background information concerning pollution levels in the Mesogia plain shortly before the operation of the new international airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' in this region (March 2001).  相似文献

In this study, the environmental behavior of two major airborne pollutants, ozone and nitrogen dioxide, was investigated with respect to their exceedance patterns of air quality criteria. For this purpose, we used data sets collected from a total of 31 air quality monitoring stations dispersed across the Seoul metropolitan city between 1990 and 2000. In the case of NO(2), the frequency of hourly exceedance data sets exhibited little changes in the early 90s. However, it increased dramatically after 1995, probably in compliance with a rapid increase in the total number of automobiles. Likewise, the daily exceedance of O(3) in the early 90s was not significant, approaching 100 cases (except in 1994). However, its total quantity began to surpass 300 cases since around 1996. Comparison of those exceedance data was also made among spatially divided data groups. In the case of NO(2), the occurrence of exceedance data was dominated by the western part of the city in both magnitude and frequency. On the other hand, that for O(3) was characterized by notably strong occurrences in the eastern counterpart. The overall results of our analysis of the NO(2) and O(3) exceedance data sets indicate an inextricable linkage between the two pollutants in association with geographical and meteorological factors.  相似文献

Emission trading is a market-based approach designed to improve the efficiency and economic viability of emission control programs; emission trading has typically been confined to trades among single pollutants. Interpollutant trading (IPT), as described in this work, allows for trades among emissions of different compounds that affect the same air quality end point, in this work, ambient ozone (O3) concentrations. Because emissions of different compounds impact air quality end points differently, weighting factors or trading ratios (tons of emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) equivalent to a ton of emissions of volatile organic compounds [VOCs]) must be developed to allow for IPT. In this work, IPT indices based on reductions in O3 concentrations and based on reductions in population exposures to O3 were developed and evaluated using a three-dimensional gridded photochemical model for Austin, TX, a city currently on the cusp of nonattainment with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for O3 concentrations averaged over 8 hr. Emissions of VOC and NO(x) from area and mobile sources in Austin are larger than emissions from point sources. The analysis indicated that mobile and area sources exhibited similar impacts. Trading ratios based on maximum O3 concentration or population exposure were similar. In contrast, the trading ratios did exhibit significant (more than a factor of two) day-to-day variability. Analysis of the air quality modeling indicated that the daily variability in trading ratios could be attributed to daily variations in both emissions and meteorology.  相似文献

2012年6—10月,在我国北方某焦化厂厂界附近开展了O3、NO x、CO体积分数在线监测及VOCs样品采集分析工作,获得了夏、秋两季焦化厂厂界O3及其前体物的体积分数及其日变化趋势。焦化厂厂界附近O3、NO、CO体积分数均呈单峰型日变化,O3体积分数的季节差异不明显,夏季仅略高于秋季,而NO、CO体积分数秋季高于夏季,作为二次反应产物的NO2,其变化幅度秋季比夏季强烈。夏季TVOCs在各监测时段的小时体积分数呈现先上升后下降的日变化趋势,而秋季则呈现逐渐下降的日变化趋势。由较小VOCs/NO x的比值可初步判断,该焦化厂所在区域的大气光化学臭氧生成潜势处于VOCs控制区。在焦化厂下风向厂界附近,夏、秋两季TVOCs平均体积分数分别为(43.8±45.0)×10-9和(26.7±29.6)×10-9,苯系物、烷烃、烯烃的平均体积分数分别为(34.3±28.1)×10-9和(14.4±14.8)×10-9、(5.3±11.8)×10-9和(7.0±7.7)×10-9、(4.3±5.0)×10-9和(5.3±7.1)×10-9。夏、秋两季焦化厂附近臭氧生成潜势贡献最大的是苯系物(47.6%~65.8%),其次是烯烃(28.0%~41.9%),再次是烷烃(6.3%~10.5%)。  相似文献

Seasonal evolution of ozone (O3) and its nitrogen precursors (NO, NO2) in downtown Sfax (Tunisia) was monitored. Nitrogen oxides are shown to be closely related to local vehicle sources. Seasonal ozone levels, however, are shown to be dependent on regional meteorological conditions. High ozone levels are due to the effect of anticyclones and stratosphere intrusions (cut-off lows). Low levels are associated with cyclonic conditions of small vertical range of motion. Other than these particular conditions, ozone levels are shown to be relatively higher in fall and winter seasons, characterised by a very steady atmosphere. Overall, the examined meteorological conditions, the ozone concentrations observed in downtown Sfax are characterised by clear day/night cycles, which can be explained by the significant ventilation of the region.  相似文献
