Interactions between nestling birds and their parents are models for examining parent–offspring communication and sibling competition. Most studies have focused on species where young are restricted to a nest. However, offspring of many species are mobile and fed by parents for an extended period post-hatch. These chicks mobility may provide an opportunity to examine the role of signalling and physical competition on parental feeding decisions. We examined parental provisioning rules in relation to offspring behaviour and hatching order (i.e., competitive ability) in a species with mobile young, the common tern. We determined that about 95% of feedings were directed to the first chick to reach the parent when it landed with food. We developed a probabilistic model to predict the likelihood of a chick reaching the parent first, and thus receiving food. Our model showed that begging intensity, feeding history, and the interaction between begging intensity and relative proximity to the parent best predicted which chick would arrive first. Increased begging was associated with arriving first significantly more when a chick was relatively further from the parent than when it was closer than its siblings. Independently of these factors, larger, earlier-hatched chicks were more likely to be fed than smaller, later-hatched chicks. Additional analyses showed that parents landed closer to more intensively begging chicks, however, increased begging did not explain the advantage of earlier-hatched chicks because begging intensity did not vary with hatching order. Instead, earlier-hatched chicks were more likely to outrun later-hatched siblings and reach the parent first.  相似文献

Hosts of brood parasites have evolved the ability to discriminate non-mimetic and even mimetic eggs, but not non-mimetic chicks. Here we demonstrate that the great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius does not provide its magpie Pica pica host with a super-normal stimulus that helps to avoid recognition, because single cuckoo chicks introduced into otherwise unparasitized magpie nests are not fed at a higher frequency than single magpie chicks introduced to parasitized magpie nests. Another series of experiments demonstrated that magpies have the ability to discriminate cuckoo chicks, mainly when these are introduced at the end of the nestling period, and especially when the cuckoo chick together with a magpie chick is presented to adult magpies outside the nest. This supports the idea that cuckoos exploit the obligatory reaction of magpies to feed all young that have been hatched in their nests and whose signatures they have learnt. Furthermore, the experimental cuckoo chicks in parasitized magpie nests were more likely to be accepted than they were in non-parasitized nests. This supports the hypothesis that magpies may learn to recognise their own nestlings as those present in the nest and may indicate that a comparison between cuckoo and magpie nestlings is the basis of discrimination.  相似文献

Carrion crows Corvus corone corone in northern Spain form complex cooperative groups that contain non-dispersing offspring and immigrants. Reproduction is often shared among group members, with polyandry prevalent over joint egg laying. However, due to incest avoidance or sexual immaturity, reproduction is potentially available only to a fraction of group members (potential breeders), while others do not breed (non-breeders). We combined molecular data with video-recorded observations at nests in order to investigate whether potential breeders and non-breeders adjust their individual effort in nestling feeding respectively to their level of parentage and the relatedness with the chicks. Overall, parents of at least one chick in the brood showed the highest feeding rates. Among potential breeders, genetic mothers and fathers fed chicks at significantly higher rates than individuals with no parentage, but they did not adjust their effort according to the proportion of offspring generated. Current direct fitness benefits are therefore important in determining a high provisioning effort, but crows may lack a mechanism to finely assess their share of parentage. Among non-breeders, males contributed more than females to chick feeding, but we found no significant correlation between feeding rate and relatedness to the nestling. We discuss how the latter result can be reconciled with the fact that kin selection has been shown to be important in shaping the crow cooperative society.Communicated by C. Brown  相似文献

Summary Reproduction in the blue-footed boody was examined for evidence of parent-offspring conflict over infanticidal reduction of the brood. Parental investment was analysed by measuring clutch characteristics, and chick growth and mortality in four seasons. Direct observations were made of behavioral development to determine the social roles of family members. The modal clutch was two similar-sized eggs, which hatched 4.0 days apart due to a 5.1-day laying interval and immediate incubation of the first egg. On average, senior chicks grew faster than their sibs in years of good or poor growth (Fig. 2), maintaining the initial size disparity for at least 65 days (Fig. 1). Differential mortality of junior chicks was associated not with poor personal growth, but with a 20–25% weight deficiency of the senior sib, implying siblicidal brood reduction triggered at a weight threshold. Senior chicks established behavioral dominance through low-frequency pecking, but ordinarily did not eliminate their sibs nor substantially suppress their begging (Fig. 3), even when their own growth was 16% below potential. Parents fed dominant chicks more frequently than subordinates, but did not intervene in inter-sib aggression, even when it reached a siblicidal level. The weight and possibly the dominance relation between sibs was inverted in 12% of pairs. The theoretical prediction of conflict over elimination of the junior chick was not supported; rather, parents and senior chick cooperate, as if their fitness interests were congruent. Further, provisional tolerance of the junior chick by its underweight senior sib is consistent with self-sacrifice to increase the latter's inclusive fitness.  相似文献

Summary O'Connor (1978) generated behavioral predictions from Trivers's (1974) theory of parent-offspring conflict (POC) in relation to avian brood reduction, especially for species using escalated sibling aggression. In general, when daily mortality rates fall between certain values (the mortality difference thresholds for parents and surviving offspring: O'Connor 1978), POC is expected. At such times parents and the early-hatching senior offspring are expected to disagree on the necessity, or at least timing, of the victim chick's death. Because that death is promoted directly by the senior chicks and because parents have realistic means of nullifying those efforts, behavioral conflict is expected. I examined the activities of all family members in one siblicidal (great egrets, Casmerodius albus) and one nonsiblicidal brood-reducing species (great blue herons, Ardea herodias) of ardeidae in Texas nesting colonies. Daily mortality rates over two breeding seasons approximated the predicted POC zone for four-chick (B/4) heron broods and three-chick (B/3) egret broods. As predicted, egret sibling aggression was significantly lower in two-chick broods. Herons seldom fought, regardless of brood size. Special attention was paid to the egret B/3 data for behavioral manifestations of POC. Parents did not interfere overtly with sibling fights (99.2% of 2,829), but parents seemed to have a subtle mollifying effect on the aggression (fewer sever fights occurred when parents were present). Parents showed no favoritism in food distribution to dying victim chicks. The mixed results are consistent with two rather different POC interpretations: (1) that significant conflict exists and the offspring are winning or (2) that there is no significant evolutionary conflict. In the latter case, parents are regarded as creating asymmetries among offspring (e.g., via hatch asynchrony), then leaving competition among siblings to run its course without further intervention (laissezfaire policy). This view explicitly recognizes that siblicide and other investment-skewing selfish chick behaviors may serve parental interests well-i.e., that equal allocation of resources is not likely to be the parental optimum. Using the relative reproductive values of each nestling as an index of the parent's unequal parental investment optimum produces a closer fit to the observed food distribution skew, but does not resolve the question of whether conflict remains.  相似文献

For elucidation of the metabolism of the endocrine disruptor nonylphenol by Sphingomonas sp. strain TTNP3, the degradation of an isomer of nonylphenol, 4(2,6-dimethyl-2-heptyl)-phenol, has been studied. As in the case of 4(3,5-dimethyl-3-heptyl)-phenol, the metabolism of this nonylphenol isomer leads to the formation of the NIH-shifted product 2(2,6-dimethyl-2-heptyl)-1,4-benzenediol (NIH: National Institute of Health), but also to the alkoxy derivative 4(2,6-dimethylheptan-2-yloxy)phenol as additional metabolite. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the formation of alkoxyphenol as a degradation product of nonylphenol. Additionally, these results provide for the first time evidence for slight differences in the biodegradation of the isomers of nonylphenol.  相似文献

Summary Conspecific nest parasitism is a common reproductive strategy in the northern masked weaver (Ploceus taeniopterus). Parasites appear to be females with nests of their own who lay an additional egg in another female's nest as a way to enhance their reproductive success. Brood size in the northern masked weaver is practically constrained to three: starvation in four-chick broods is very common. The constraint on brood size is probably imposed by the extreme hatching asynchrony characteristic of this species: the last egg in a four-egg clutch hatches 72 h after the first egg, and when a chick starves, it is almost always the youngest chick. Late-hatching chicks also grow more slowly than do early-hatching chicks. If a female were to lay a fourth egg in her own nest, there is little chance that it would succeed. However; if she places it in another female's nest before that host lays her third egg, then it may have a greater chance of success.  相似文献

Behavioral precursors of 12 divorces were examined in 30 color-banded pairs of common murres (Uria aalge) over six breeding seasons. Common murres are long-lived seabirds that typically return each year to the same mate and nest site in dense colonies. At least one parent is present continuously from egg lay to chick fledging. Murres, therefore, have considerable opportunities to compare their mates parental behavior with that of several familiar neighbors. Previous reproductive success was lower for divorcing birds than for reuniting pairs. As predicted by the better option hypothesis, there were clear choosers (seven females and five males) that initiated divorce by moving to a new birds site or by courting a new partner at their current site. Choosers improved their reproductive success after the divorce, whereas their previous partners, the victims did not. Yearly divorce rates (average 8.2% per year) were significantly correlated with yearly mortality rates. Divorces appear to be opportunistic: pairs divorced after varying numbers of reproductive failures with the immediate precursor usually being the disappearance (death) of a murre from a successful neighboring site. In contrast to the delays experienced by victims, choosers formed new pairs quickly and laid their eggs no later than reuniting pairs. Prior to the divorce, victims fed their chicks less often than choosers, and some engaged in other behaviors that compromised egg or chick survival. These observations suggest that deficiencies in parental behavior were precursors to the divorce. This report is one of the first cases where reproductive failure of divorcing pairs has been linked to deficits in the parental behavior of the subsequent divorce victim.Communicated by C. In unpredictable environments, any tactic that enables avian parents to adjust brood size and, thus, energy expenditure to environmental conditions should be favoured. Hatching asynchrony (HA), which occurs whenever incubation commences before clutch completion, may comprise such a tactic. For instance, the sibling rivalry hypothesis states that the hierarchy among chicks, concomitant to HA, should both facilitate the adjustment of brood size to environmental conditions and reduce several components of sibling competition as compared to synchronous hatching, at both brood and individual levels. We thus predicted that brood aggression, begging and feeding rates should decrease and that older chick superiority should increase with HA increasing, leading to higher growth and survival rates. Accordingly, we investigated the effects of an experimental upward and downward manipulation of HA magnitude on behaviour, growth and survival of black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) chicks. In line with the sibling rivalry hypothesis, synchronous hatching increased aggression and tended to increase feeding rates by parents at the brood level. Begging rates, however, increased with HA contrary to our expectations. At the individual level, as HA magnitude increased, the younger chick was attacked and begged proportionally more often, experienced a slower growth and a higher mortality than its sibling. Overall, the occurrence of energetic costs triggered by synchronous hatching both for parents and chicks, together with the lower growth rate and increased mortality of the younger chick in highly asynchronous broods suggest that natural HA magnitude may be optimal.  相似文献

Hatching asynchrony is widespread amongst animals, but no consensus has yet emerged as to why asynchronous hatching has evolved. It is generally thought to have adaptive benefits during the raising of dependent young. However, here, we considered an alternative view of hatching asynchrony in birds as a consequence of factors acting at the onset of incubation. We recorded parental nest attendance behaviour during laying using continuous records of nest temperature in herring gulls, Larus argentatus. We tested whether nest attendance during laying was related to individual factors (clutch size and diet) and whether it had consequences on fitness outcomes (hatching spread, incubation period, hatching success and chick survival). Low nest attendance was associated with small clutch size, and independent of clutch size, pairs on a more marine diet had lower nest attendance than pairs on a lower trophic level terrestrial diet, possibly due to higher foraging effort for marine food. Broods hatched more asynchronous where pairs had a lower nest attendance during laying or took longer to complete a clutch and where the last egg took longer to hatch. Low nest attendance was also related to shorter incubation periods, possibly representing a strategy of birds in poor condition to reduce the demand of incubation by reducing the length of incubation. We found that low nest attendance during laying and increasing hatching asynchrony had detrimental effects on hatching success for small eggs laid early in the laying sequence. Increasing hatching asynchrony also had a detrimental effect on the survival of the youngest sibling. In our study population, hatching asynchrony was influenced by a more complex set of factors than simply onset of incubation and appears to be constrained by circumstances at the onset of incubation rather than to be an adaptive strategy. Thus, factors acting both during offspring rearing and at the onset of incubation need to be considered for a better understanding of hatching asynchrony.  相似文献

The prawn Macrobrachium idae Heller carries 40 to 160 eggs depending upon the body size of the mother animal. After incubation, 63, 35 and 2% eggs are hatched on the first, second and third hatching nights, respectively. Mean dry weight of a single larva relased on the first night is 420 g (equivalent to 2.86 cal). Larvae released on the second or third hatching nights weighed 380 g (=2.56 cal) or 308 g (=2.02 cal). The total reserve yolk-energy available in a larva hatched on the first night is 1 cal. There is a definite shift from protein to fat metabolism as hatching is delayed. Oxygen consumption of developing eggs awaiting release on the first or second hatching night is 1.9 l/mg dry weight/h. In comparison to larvae released on the first night, those released on the second night exhibit 2% increase in total body-length and 2.4 or 14.3% decrease in the lengths of the 6th abdominal segment or the orbit. Larvae released on the first, second or third hatching nights, on exposure to starvation stress, survive for 3.8, 2.3 or 1.5 days. The swimming speed of larvae released on the first or second night is 1.0 or 0.6 cm/sec. Larvae released on the subsequent hatching nights committed nearly 2 times greater number of mistakes per cm distance in the horizontal plane. Since hatching of all developing eggs simultaneously on the first hatching night is possible by means of artificial technique(s), it is possible to improve survival rate of decapod larvae.  相似文献

Summary Cock willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) closely guard their mates from predators and conspecific males, and vigorously defend their nests and young. In view of potential costs and benefits of behavioural guarding descisions, I designed a test to examine if, when and how males altered defence priorities. Cock willow ptarmigan were very attentive to their mates throughout the breeding season, unaccompanied hens comprising less than 3% of the sightings of mated females. From the second week of incubation until shortly after hatch, males attempted to guard both mates and offspring. Males guarded mates preferentially over nests until the third week of incubation; they then changed their priority to defence of offspring (nest and/or chicks). The overall defence response initially was strong, but decreased after the first week of incubation. Strength of response increased again in late incubation, and declined as chicks began to fly. Consistency of defence decisions was highest during prenesting and egg laying and lowest during late incubation. Since males defended their mates for a longer period than required for protection of paternity, hypotheses predicting enhanced mate survival and extended paternity options through renesting were examined. Removal of males did not result in reduced survival or increased weight loss of widows during incubation. In light of heavy nest depredation and displacement pressures by conspecifics, mate guarding throughout incubation enhanced male fitness by ensuring paternity in renesting attempts.  相似文献

Summary Maternity and paternity uncertainty represent important costs to breeders among white-fronted bee-eaters (Merops bullockoides) in Kenya. Analysis of enzyme polymorphisms reveals that between 9% and 12% of all offspring are genetically unrelated to one or both of their putative parents. These bastards are the result of three different sources of parental uncertainty: Extrapair copulation, intraspecific egg parasitism, and quasi-parasitism (parasitism by a female who was fertilized by the male attending the parasitized nest). The first two represent costs to males, who rear offspring that are not genetically their own; the latter two produce the same costs for females. Genetic relatedness plays an important role in defining the social structure of M. bullockoides populations. In order to predict patterns of parental investment and the choice of recipients for helping behavior, one would like to know the relative frequency of maternity vs paternity uncertainty. The possible use of maximum likelihood techniques to separate the sources of non-kin is discussed. Unfortunately, the sample size of detected non-kin in the present study was not large enough to allow constructive use of the technique for bee-eaters. A comparison of estimates from biochemical and behavioral analyses indicates that both methods can produce misleading results. Behavioral data can be used to test underlying assumptions of biochemical analyses, and vice-versa. Used together, the two approaches reinforce one another and strengthen the reliability of conclusions drawn from either one alone.  相似文献

Summary The initial stage of pair formation of the pied and the collared flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca and F. albicollis) was simulated in a field experiment. Male dummies positioned near nest boxes and singing by means of tape-recorded song from loudspeakers offered prospecting females a nest box combined with an automatic trap. An unequivocal demonstration of female arrival at the male's territory was obtained by the trapping of the female. Control nest-box traps were provided with silent dummies. Factors other than male song causing female attraction were controlled by a daily switch of the position of singing and silent dummies. Nine out of ten females were caught in nest-box traps with singing dummies (one-tailed binomial test, P=0.011). The result supports the hypothesis that male song functions in mate attraction. This hypothesis has never previously been tested in field experiments although circumstantial evidence for it has been available.  相似文献

Solemya reidi Bernard 1980 is a gutless protobranch bivalve known to possess intracellular chemoautotrophic bacterial symbionts in its gill. A light and electron microscope study on the embryology and larval development of S. reidi provides data for the bivalve Subclass Cryptodonta. S. reidi spontaneously spawned large eggs (271 m in diameter), which developed within individual gelatious egg capsules. The first several cleavages were equal and a distinct molluscan cross was formed at the animal pole of the embryo, features previously unreported in bivalve development. Lecithotrophic pericalymma larvae (similar to the larvae of paleotaxodont protobranch bivalves and aplacophoran molluscs) hatched at 18 to 24 h and remained in the water column for a further 5 d at 10°C. At hatching, larvae measured from 360 to 440 m in length and from 225 to 265 m in cross-sectional diameter. Definitive adult structures developed within an epithelial locomotory test entirely covered with compound cilia. The test histolysed at metamorphosis and was ingested throught the mouth into the perivisceral cavity. Length and height of the shell following metamorphosis was 433 m (±42 m, n=16) and 282 m (± 29 m, n=13), respectively. Primary data and data from the literature show that the type of larval development in both paleotaxodont and cryptodont bivalves cannot be reliably estimated from egg or prodissoconch sizes.  相似文献

American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) lay two eggs but typically rear only one young owing to siblicidal brood reduction affecting the later-hatched, or B-chick. When the A-offspring fails at an early age, the B-chick may survive as a replacement (insurance) offspring. Using a combination of nests with natural and artificially manipulated hatching asynchrony, I examined the hypothesis that hatching asynchrony in this species is adaptively tuned to permit B-chicks to survive during the time they are most likely to be needed as replacements, with brood reduction following when they become redundant. Hatching asynchrony over the natural range of 0–4 days significantly increased within-brood mass differentials and reduced B-chick lifespan. Full synchrony had a marginally negative effect on A-chick mass. Greater asynchrony did not significantly affect the number of days B-chicks survived after hatching of the A-chick, owing to a corresponding extension of time B-offspring were protected from harassment while still within the egg. This resulted in a high probability (> 0.8) of B-chicks surviving through the initial period (5–7 days) of maximum early A-chick loss. Redundant B-chicks were subject to heavy brood reduction, with both chicks likely to have survived at only one each of 94 natural and 84 manipulated (0, 2, and 4 days asynchrony) nests. Hatching asynchrony in American white pelicans, in combination with a rapid development of senior chick siblicidal competence, appears to result in a time course of brood reduction appropriate for an effective insurance reproductive strategy. The sexy son hypothesis suggests that females obtain future fitness benefits from mating with polygynous males through the inheritance by their sons of traits contributing to mating success. We tested this hypothesis in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in two ways. We first compared sons of monogynous and polygynous free-living males for their abilities in nest site acquisition and female-directed behaviors in controlled aviary tests. We then investigated eggs laid in monogynous and polygynous matings for concentrations of maternal steroid hormones that could affect behavioral differentiation of sons. Sons of polygynous fathers defended more nest boxes and produced more courtship song than sons of monogynous fathers. Mean concentrations of maternal androstenedione (A4), 5-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone (T), and 17-estradiol (E) in yolks were not affected by mating status. However, the within-clutch pattern of A4 depended on mating status, with higher concentrations in last than in first eggs of clutches of monogynous but not polygynous matings. These results suggest that (1) sons may inherit from their fathers behavioral qualities for the successful acquisition of nest sites and attraction of mates; (2) differential exposure to maternal steroid hormones during development in the egg is unlikely the cause of the behavioral differences between adult sons of monogynous and polygynous fathers; and (3) females adjust the within-clutch pattern of androgen to mating status, possibly in response to the expected contribution of their mate to nestling care.  相似文献

In siblicidal species, hatching asynchrony could act to reduce sibling rivalry or promote the death of last-hatched chicks. The pattern of hatching asynchrony was experimentally altered in the black kite Milvus migrans. Hatching asynchrony in control broods was intermediate between those of experimentally synchronised and asynchronised broods. Sibling aggression and wounds on the chicks were more commonly observed early in the nestling period and in synchronous nests. Serious injuries were observed on last-hatched chicks in asynchronous nests, as were observations of intimidated or crushed chicks. Sibling aggression was related to food abundance, but some chicks died at an early age in nests with abundant food (cainism). Cainism was more commonly found in asynchronous nests. For species with facultative siblicide, moderate hatching asynchrony could be a compromise between reducing sibling rivalry and avoiding large size differences between sibs that would result in cainism. Female black kites preferentially fed the smallest chicks and exhibited behaviours to reduce sibling aggression, contrary to observations in other siblicidal species. In a highly opportunistic forager such as the black kite, a strategy may exist to protract the life of all the chicks in the brood, waiting for unpredictable situations of food overabundance. This would induce the appearance of a parent-offspring conflict over brood reduction, reflected in the existence of a possible anticipated response by some of the chicks (cainism) and in the appearance of special behaviours by the parents to selectively feed smaller chicks or reduce sibling aggression. In this facultatively siblicidal species, cainism does not seem to be the final stage of an evolutionary trend favouring the raising of high-quality chicks, but a manifestation of a parent-offspring conflict over brood size. Larvae of Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) were reared from hatching to the first or second crab stages in 11 combinations of salinities and cyclic temperatures (5, 20, and 35 S at 20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C, and 30° to 35°C; 25 S at 20° to 25°C and 30° to 35°C). The larvae survived to the megalops and first crab stages in all salinities and cycles of temperature other than 5 S at 30° to 35°C. The best survival to the megalops (94%) and first crab (90%) stages occurred in 20 S, 20° to 25°C. In all other combinations of salinities and temperatures there was a reduction in survival to the first crab stage. The duration of the larval stages was affected significantly by temperature, whereas the effect of salinity on the mean days from hatching to the first crab stage was not consistent at the different temperature cycles. Development to the first crab stage required the shortest time in 20 S, 30° to 35°C (mean 12.3 days), and the longest time in 5 and 35 S, 20° to 25°C (mean 22.6 days and 21.6 days, respectively). Megalops larvae reared in 35 S at all cycles of temperature, as well as larvae in 20 and 25 S, 30° to 35°C, showed a high percentage of abnormality, with the highest percentage occurring in 35 S, 30° to 35°C.
