The influence of traffic on urban air quality is highest at low wind speeds and the presence of a temperature inversion. By relying on detailed aerosol measurements conducted simultaneously at two distances close to a major road, we studied one such episode encountered in Helsinki, Finland, during the wintertime. The observed episode was characterized by exceptionally weak dilution of traffic emissions, with particle number concentration decreasing by no more than 10–30% between 9 and 65 m distances from the road. During the nighttime with relatively minor traffic flow, dilution and particle growth by vapor condensation were found to be the dominant processes in this road-to-ambient evolution stage. The latter process shifted a significant fraction of nucleation mode particles to sizes >30 nm diameter, modifying thereby the shape of the particle number size distribution. During the rush hours in the morning, particle number concentrations were elevated by approximately an order of magnitude compared with nighttime, such that also the self-coagulation of nucleation mode particles became important. Our study demonstrates that under suitable meteorological conditions (low wind speeds coupled with temperature inversions), traffic emissions are able to affect submicron particle number concentrations over large areas around major roads and may be a dominant source of ultrafine particles in the urban atmosphere. Under conditions characterized by exceptionally slow mixing, simultaneous processing of ultrafine (nucleation and Aitken mode) particles by dilution, self- and inter-modal coagulation, as well as by condensation and evaporation seriously questions the applicability of particle number emission factors, derived from the measurements at few tens of meters from the roadside.  相似文献

This study measured ultrafine particle (UFP) levels and their size distributions in the Hsuehshan tunnel from August 12 to 19, 2009, using a Fast Mobility Particle Sizer. Measurement results demonstrate that traffic volume, the slope of the tunnel (downhill or uphill) and the ventilation system affected UFP levels inside the tunnel. Average UFP levels were about 1.0 × 105–3.0 × 105 particles cm?3 at normal traffic volume. A traffic jam in the tunnel could raise UFP levels to over 1.0 × 106 particles cm?3. UFP levels at the uphill bore were significantly higher than those at the downhill bore due to high UFP levels exhausted from vehicles going uphill at high engine load conditions. UFP levels eventually diluted 10–50% with fresh air from tunnel air shafts. Gas-to-particle condensation conversion markedly produced nucleation mode particles at the tunnel entrance section. Observations also showed Aitken mode particles markedly formed by coagulation growth of nucleation mode particles in the tunnel middle section and exit section. That is, the particle size distributions changed significantly inside the tunnel. Measurement results suggest that particles in the Aitken mode in the long tunnel governed UFP levels.  相似文献

A large set of size-resolved aerosol samples was inspected with regard to their ion balance to shed light on how the aerosol acidity changes with particle size in the lower troposphere and what implications this might have for the atmospheric processing of aerosols. Quite different behaviour between the remote and more polluted environments could be observed. At the remote sites, practically the whole accumulation mode had cation-to-anion ratios clearly below unity, indicating that these particles were quite acidic. The supermicron size range was considerably less acidic and may in some cases have been close to neutral or even alkaline. An interesting feature common to the remote sites was a clear jump in the cation-to-anion ratio when going from the accumulation to the Aitken mode. The most likely reason for this was cloud processing which, via in-cloud sulphate production, makes the smallest accumulation-mode particles more acidic than the non-activated Aitken-mode particles. A direct consequence of the less acidic nature of the Aitken mode is that it can take up semi-volatile, water-soluble gases much easier than the accumulation mode. This feature may have significant implications for atmospheric cloud condensation nuclei production in remote environments. In rural and urban locations, the cation-to-anion ratio was close to unity over most of the accumulation mode, but increased significantly when going to either larger or smaller particle sizes. The high cation-to-anion ratios in the supermicron size range were ascribed to carbonate associated with mineral dust. The ubiquitous presence of carbonate in these particles indicates that they were neutral or alkaline, making them good sites for heterogeneous reactions involving acidic trace gases. The high cation-to-anion ratios in the Aitken mode suggest that these particles contained some water-soluble anions not detected by our chemical analysis. This is worth keeping in mind when investigating the hygroscopic properties or potential health effects of ultrafine particles in polluted environments.  相似文献

Aerosol physical and chemical properties were measured in a forest site in central Amazonia (Cuieiras reservation, 2.61S; 60.21W) during the dry season of 2004 (Aug–Oct). Aerosol light scattering and absorption, mass concentration, elemental composition and size distributions were measured at three tower levels (Ground: 2 m; Canopy: 28 m, and Top: 40 m). For the first time, simultaneous eddy covariance fluxes of fine mode particles and volatile organic compounds (VOC) were measured above the Amazonian forest canopy. Aerosol fluxes were measured by eddy covariance using a Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) and a sonic anemometer. VOC fluxes were measured by disjunct eddy covariance using a Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS). At nighttime, a strong vertical gradient of phosphorus and potassium in the aerosol coarse mode was observed, with higher concentrations at Ground level. This suggests a source of primary biogenic particles below the canopy. Equivalent black carbon measurements indicate the presence of light-absorbing aerosols from biogenic origin. Aerosol number size distributions typically consisted of superimposed Aitken (76 nm) and accumulation modes (144 nm), without clear events of new particle formation. Isoprene and monoterpene fluxes reached respectively 7.4 and 0.82 mg m?2 s?1 around noon. An average fine particle flux of 0.05 ± 0.10 106 m?2 s?1 was calculated, denoting an equilibrium between emission and deposition fluxes of fine mode particles at daytime. No significant correlations were found between VOC and fine mode aerosol concentrations or fluxes.  相似文献

Physical and chemical properties of submicrometer aerosol particles were measured in summer 2004 (June/July) and winter 2005 (January/February) in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China, using a Twin-Differential Mobility Particle Sizer (T-DMPS), a Hygroscopicity-Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (H-TDMA), and a Micro Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI). Particle number–size distributions were measured in the diameter range Dp = 3–800 nm and hygroscopic properties were determined at initial dry particle diameters of Dpj (j = 30, 50, 80, 150, 250, and 350 nm) at a relative humidity (RH) of 90%. Hygroscopic properties were compared with chemical analyses of aerosol samples taken with the MOUDI. Based on the hygroscopicity data, the total hygroscopic particle volume was modeled, including dependence on dry particle size, season and level of pollution using a simple approach.Overall, the chemical analysis showed ammonium sulfate to be the major inorganic component of the urban submicrometer aerosol in Beijing along with relatively high fractions of elemental carbon (10–25%) and organic matter (15–60%) depending on particle size and season.The hygroscopic growth distributions (H-TDMA) subdivided the aerosol population into three different groups of particles with varying growth factors depending on dry particle size, namely nearly hydrophobic (growth factor = 0.96–1.07), less hygroscopic (1.06–1.29) and more hygroscopic (1.26–1.62).Hydrophobic particle fractions indicating freshly emitted soot/carbonaceous particles varied between 10 and 32% depending on dry particle size and season. During heavily polluted times, a decreasing number of hydrophobic particle fractions indicated that the urban submicrometer aerosol in Beijing was highly influenced by more aged aerosol transported from the industrial regions around Beijing containing sulfate as a major component.Based on model calculations, the urban submicrometer aerosol in Beijing showed strong compositional variations. The calculated total hygroscopic volume fractions varied between 16 and 65% depending on size, level of pollution and season.  相似文献

Extensive measurements on particle number concentration and size distribution (13–800 nm), together with detailed chemical composition of PM2.5 have constituted the main inputs of the database used for a source apportionment analysis. Data were collected at an urban background site in Barcelona, Western Mediterranean.The source identification analysis helped us to distinguish five emission sources (vehicle exhausts, mineral dust, sea spray, industrial source and fuel-oil combustion) and two atmospheric processes (photochemical induced nucleation and regional/urban background particles derived from coagulation and condensation processes). After that, a multilinear regression analysis was applied in order to quantify the contribution of each factor.This study reveals that vehicle exhausts contribute dominantly to the number concentration in all the particle sizes (52–86%), but especially in the range 30–200 nm. This work also points out the importance of the regional and/or urban formed aerosols (secondary inorganic particles) on the total number concentration (around 25% of the total number), with a higher impact on the accumulation mode. The photo-chemically induced nucleation of aerosols only represents a small proportion of the total number as an annual mean (3%), but is very relevant when considering only the nucleation mode (13–20 nm) fraction (23%). The other sources recognized registered sporadic contributions to the total number, coinciding with specific meteorological scenarios.This study discloses the main sources and features affecting and controlling the fine and ultra-fine aerosols in a typical city in the Western Mediterranean coast. Whereas the road traffic appears to be the most important source of sub-micrometric aerosols, other sources may not be negligible under specific meteorological conditions.  相似文献

Overnight aging experiments with diesel engine exhaust from a diesel power aggregate, with no or 9 kW load, and from a diesel-fueled vehicle were conducted in an environmental chamber. During a 24 h aging period the volatilities of monodisperse particles at 140, 250 and 360 °C heater temperatures were analyzed with volatility tandem differential mobility analysis (VTDMA). The particulate organic to total carbon ratio and organic carbon subfractions at 120, 250, 450 and 550 °C were analyzed with thermal-optical carbon analysis for samples from fresh, 8 or 18 h aged and 24 h aged aerosol. During the experiment also the particle size distribution, ozone and nitrogen oxide concentration, and temperature, relative humidity and total solar and total ultraviolet radiation in the chamber were monitored.After injection, the geometric mean diameter and number concentration of the particles in the chamber were 66–85 nm and 0.9–4.6×105 cm−3, respectively. The particles were seen to grow fast, at a growth rate of 18–47 nm h−1 during the first hour. The fresh particles from the diesel power aggregate contained 37–45% of apparent volume semi-volatile compounds with no load and 10–24% with 9 kW load. The semi-volatile apparent volume fraction at 360 °C for 50 nm particles produced by the diesel power aggregate was 57%. After 24 h of aging, the semi-volatile apparent volume fraction at 360 °C for 100 nm particles was 99%. This suggests that the particles in the 24 h aged aerosol at this size class are no more primary particles but particles that are formed in the chamber through nucleation and subsequent growth.  相似文献

Vehicle particle emissions are studied extensively because of their health effects, contribution to ambient PM levels and possible impact on climate. The aim of this work was to obtain a better understanding of secondary particle formation and growth in a diluting vehicle exhaust plume using 3-d information of simulations together with measurements. Detailed coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and aerosol dynamics simulations have been conducted for H2SO4–H2O and soot particles based on measurements within a vehicle exhaust plume under real conditions on public roads.Turbulent diffusion of soot and nucleation particles is responsible for the measured decrease of number concentrations within the diesel car exhaust plume and decreases coagulation rates. Particle size distribution measurements at 0.45 and 0.9 m distance to the tailpipe indicate a consistent soot mode (particle diameter Dp∼50 nm) at variable operating conditions. Soot mode number concentrations reached up to 1013 m−3 depending on operating conditions and mixing.For nucleation particles the simulations showed a strong sensitivity to the spatial dilution pattern, related cooling and exhaust H2SO4(g). The highest simulated nucleation rates were about 0.05–0.1 m from the axis of the plume. The simulated particle number concentration pattern is in approximate accordance with measured concentrations, along the jet centreline and 0.45 and 0.9 m from the tailpipe. Although the test car was run with ultralow sulphur fuel, high nucleation particle (Dp⩽15 nm) concentrations (>1013 m−3) were measured under driving conditions of strong acceleration or the combination of high vehicle speed (>140 km h−1) and high engine rotational speed (>3800 revolutions per minute (rpm)).Strong mixing and cooling caused rapid nucleation immediately behind the tailpipe, so that the highest particle number concentrations were recorded at a distance, x=0.45 m behind the tailpipe. The simulated growth of H2SO4–H2O nucleation particles was unrealistically low compared with measurements. The possible role of low and semi-volatile organic components on the growth processes is discussed. Simulations for simplified H2SO4–H2O–octane–gasoil aerosol resulted in sufficient growth of nucleation particles.  相似文献

A mobile pollutant measurement laboratory was designed and built at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland) for the measurement of on-road ambient concentrations of a large set of trace gases and aerosol parameters with high time resolution (<15 s for most instruments), along with geographical and meteorological information. This approach allowed for pollutant level measurements both near traffic (e.g. in urban areas or on freeways/main roads) and at rural locations far away from traffic, within short periods of time and at different times of day and year. Such measurements were performed on a regular base during the project year of gas phase and aerosol measurements (YOGAM). This paper presents data measured in the Zürich (Switzerland) area on a late autumn day (6 November) in 2001. The local urban particle background easily reached 50 000 cm−3, with additional peak particle number concentrations of up to 400 000 cm−3. The regional background of the total particle number concentration was not found to significantly correlate with the distance to traffic and anthropogenic emissions of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. On the other hand, this correlation was significant for the number concentration of particles in the size range 50–150 nm, indicating that the particle number concentration in this size range is a better traffic indicator than the total number concentration. Particle number size distribution measurements showed that daytime urban ambient air is dominated by high number concentrations of ultrafine particles (nanoparticles) with diameters <50 nm, which are immediately formed by traffic exhaust and thus belong to the primary emissions. However, significant variation of the nanoparticle mode was also observed in number size distributions measured in rural areas both at daytime and nighttime, suggesting that nanoparticles are not exclusively formed by primary traffic emissions. While urban daytime total number concentrations were increased by a factor of 10 compared to the nighttime background, corresponding factors for total surface area and total volume concentrations were 2 and 1.5, respectively.  相似文献

Individual aerosol particles were collected on 5 days with different meteorological conditions in March, April and June 1991 in the urban atmosphere of Vienna in Austria. The samples collected with an impactor were examined by electron microscopy. The mixing properties of submicrometer aerosol particles with radii between 0.1 and 1 μm were studied by using the dialysis (extraction) of water-soluble material. The averaged results showed that more than 85% of particles with radii between 0.1 and 0.7 μm were hygroscopic. However, more than 50% of particles with radii larger than 0.2 μm were mixed particles (hygroscopic particles with water-insoluble inclusions), and they were dominant (80%) in the size range 0.5–0.7 μm radius. The results also showed that the number proportion of mixed particles increased with increasing radius and the abundance increased with increasing particle loading in the atmosphere. The volume fraction of water-soluble material (ε) in mixed particles tended to decrease with increasing radius, implying the formation of mixed particles by heterogeneous processes such as condensation and/or surface reaction. Some results of elemental composition in individual particles analyzed with an energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer equipped with an electron microscope are also presented in this paper.  相似文献

In June 1996–June 1997 Berner low-pressure impactors were used at an urban and at a rural site in the Helsinki area for sampling ultrafine particles (UFP, PM0.1). Ten sample pairs, each pair measured simultaneously, were collected in the size range of 0.03–15 μm of particle aerodynamic diameter. More than 40 chemical components were measured. Surprisingly, the average UFP mass concentration was higher at the rural site (520 ng/m3) than at the urban site (490 ng/m3). The average chemical composition of UFP was similar at the two sites. The most abundant of the measured components were sulphate (32 and 40 ng/m3 for the urban and rural sites, respectively), ammonium (22 and 25 ng/m3), nitrate (4 and 11 ng/m3) and the Ca2+ ion (5 and 7 ng/m3). The most important metals at both sites were Ca, Na, Fe, K and Zn with concentrations between 0.7 and 5 ng/m3. Of the heavy metals, Ni, V, Cu, and Pb were important with average ultrafine concentrations between about 0.1 and 0.2 ng/m3. Also the organic anions oxalate (urban 2.1 ng/m3 and rural 1.9 ng/m3) and methanesulphonate (1.3 and 1.7 ng/m3) contributed similarly at both sites. The measured species accounted for only about 15–20% of the total ultrafine mass. The fraction that was not measured includes mainly carbonaceous material and water. It was estimated that the amount of water was about 10% (50 ng/m3) and that of carbonaceous material about 70% (350 ng/m3) at both sites. Aitken modes were observed for most components with the average mass mean mode diameters being between about 0.06 and 0.12 μm. The average concentrations in the Aitken mode differed clearly from those in the UFP for several components.The average contribution of ultrafine mass to the fine particle mass (PM2.5) was about 7% at the urban site and 8.5% at the rural site. At both sites the contribution of ultrafine to fine was especially high for Se, Ag, B, and Ni (10–20%) and at the rural site also for Co (20%), Ca2+ (16%) and Mo (11%). Enrichment in the ultrafine particles suggests that local sources may exist for these elements.Aitken modes turned out to be useful indicators of local sources for several components. The Aitken modes of Ba, Ca, Mg and Sr were similar in several samples, suggesting a common local combustion source for these elements, possibly traffic exhaust. Co, Fe, Mo and Ni formed another group of elements often having similar Aitken modes, the likely source being combustion of heavy fuel oil.  相似文献

Measurements for particles 10 nm to 10 μm were taken using a Wide-range Particle Spectrometer during the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations in 2009 in Shanghai, China. These celebrations provided an opportunity to study the number concentration and size distribution of particles in an especial atmospheric pollution situation due to firework displays. The firework activities had a clear contribution to the number concentration of small accumulation mode particles (100–500 nm) and PM1 mass concentration, with a maximum total number concentration of 3.8 × 104 cm?3. A clear shift of particles from nucleation and Aitken mode to small accumulation mode was observed at the peak of the CNY firework event, which can be explained by reduced atmospheric lifetimes of smaller particles via the concept of the coagulation sink. High particle density (2.7 g cm?3) was identified as being particularly characteristic of the firework aerosols. Recalculated fine particles PM1 exhibited on average above 150 μg m?3 for more than 12 hours, which was a health risk to susceptible individuals. Integral physical parameters of firework aerosols were calculated for understanding their physical properties and further model simulation.  相似文献

Many studies show that particle toxicity increases with decreasing their size, emphasizing the role of submicrometric particles, in particular of ultrafine particles (<100 nm). In fact, particles greater than 2.5 μm are quickly removed through dry and wet deposition on the timescale of hours whereas submicrometer particles may reside in atmosphere for weeks, penetrate in indoor environment, and be long-range transported. High aerosol size resolution measurements are important for a correct assessment of the deposition efficiency in the human respiratory system, and time resolution is another important requisite. Starting from such considerations, time-resolved aerosol particle number size distributions have been measured in downtown Rome. Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPS) and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) measurements have been carried out at the INAIL’s Pilot Station, located in downtown Rome, in an area characterized by high density of autovehicular traffic. The two instruments have allowed to investigate deeply the urban aerosol in the range of 5.6–560 and 3.5–117 nm, respectively. In particular, the FMPS measurements have confirmed the interpretation about the transition phenomena in the time interval of few seconds, timescale typically associated with the emission of gasoline and diesel engines. In downtown Rome, the hourly average size distribution is bimodal or trimodal with maxima at about 5–15, 20–30, and 70–100 nm. Particle formation in the nucleation mode was associated to freshly emitted autovehicular exhaust.  相似文献

Individual aerosol particles were collected on three days with different meteorological conditions in June 2000 in the urban atmosphere of Tsukuba, Japan. The samples collected with an electrostatic aerosol sampler (EAS) were examined by electron microscopy. The mixing properties of submicrometer aerosol particles of 0.02–0.2 μm radius were studied using the dialysis (extraction) of water-soluble material. Atmospheric aerosol particles were classified into four types with respect to the mixtures of water-soluble and water-insoluble material. The proportions of particles with water-soluble material (hygroscopic particles) ranged from 20% to 80% in the whole radius range and tended to increase with increasing radius. Moreover, by the morphological appearance, soot-containing particles were classified into two types, i.e., externally mixed soot-particles and internally mixed soot-particles. The number fractions of internally mixed soot-particles increased with increasing radius. It is found that the volume fraction of water-soluble material (ε) for the internally mixed soot-particles increased with increasing radius. In a “polluted” case, the sample showed a dominant number fraction (75%) of internally mixed soot-particles in the larger radius range of 0.1–0.2 μm.  相似文献

During measurement campaigns at an urban background and a rural site, simultaneous measurements of particle size distributions using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS)/aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) combination and Fuchs surface using an epiphaniometer have been made. The epiphaniometer was calibrated using sub-100 nm monodisperse aerosol and it was found that a calibration based upon particle electrical mobility diameters measured with a SMPS was consistent irrespective of the use of singlet particles of sodium chloride and ammonium sulphate or clusters of carbon. The field intercomparison of surface areas derived directly from the epiphaniometer and calculated from the size distributions determined by the SMPS/APS combination showed a good agreement of Fuchs surface estimates at both measurement sites. However, attempts to estimate a “geometric” surface area from the epiphaniometer data led to significant divergence from the estimates of the SMPS/APS combination when there was a significant fraction of coarser (>700 nm) particles contributing to the aerosol surface area.  相似文献

Most aerosol particles, such as sulphate and sea-salt particles, mainly scatter solar radiation, whilst soot (in the form of elemental carbon or “black” carbon, BC) in addition leads to considerable absorption. This scattering and absorption by the aerosol particles constitute the so-called direct aerosol effect. In this paper, we present results from a study of possible direct effects of tropospheric BC and sulphate aerosols, with an emphasis on BC aerosols, along a line from North Africa through Europe into the Arctic. Radiative budgets in a cloud-free atmosphere are estimated. Based on model-calculated distributions of BC and sulphate (provided by Seland and Iversen, 1998) and assumed size distributions of the background aerosol, new size distributions are obtained by adding natural, biomass burning and fossil fuel contributions to the background aerosol. Added nucleation mode particles are assumed externally mixed, whereas added accumulation mode BC and sulphate is internally mixed with the background according to condensational growth and Brownian coagulation theory. Humidity effects are taken into account by use of the Köhler equation. Mie calculations provide the resulting optical parameters, and the forcing is finally estimated by use of a radiative transfer model. A reference run and a series of eleven test-runs are performed to investigate the sensitivity of various assumptions on the contribution to upward TOA irradiance from BC and non-sea-salt sulphate. The tests suggest a high sensitivity to presence of BC and to particle swelling due to humidity. The sensitivity to assumed distribution of BC on particle size is more moderate. The same is true for the vertical resolution and the number concentration of the background aerosol. The effect of mixing organic carbon (OC) internally with biomass burning BC nucleation mode particles is characterized as moderate. The role of OC is, however, still uncertain. The same holds true for the optical thickness of the background atmosphere, for which we found a high sensitivity in this study. Other assumptions that were investigated had only small effects on the forcing. For the reference run we find a minimum in the aerosol forcing of approximately −5 W m-2 near the most polluted areas in Europe, and a maximum of approximately 2 W m-2 over North Africa. A warming effect is also found for the Arctic region, with forcing values up to 0.4 W m-2.  相似文献

The measured physical size distributions of sub-micron particles during cold season at Pune, India are analyzed to explore the characteristics of nucleation and growth properties. Preliminary analysis of aerosol size distribution in time-series shows large increase in number concentration due to nucleation events between 0800 h and 1030 h at this location. The observable quantities such as condensable vapor concentration (C), its source rate (Q), growth rate (GR) and condensable sink (CS) are estimated from the time-series evolutions of aerosol size distributions. The concentration of vapor and its source rate were about 19.8 ± 2.15 × 107 molecules cm?3 and 1.28 ± 0.084 × 107 cm?3 s?1 respectively. The average condensation sink and growth rate were 7.1 ± 0.4 × 10?2 s?1 and 16.95 ± 1.86 nm h?1 respectively during the growth period. The values are high enough to trigger the nucleation bursts and enhance subsequent growth rates of nucleation mode particles at this location. The magnitudes are in the range of those observed at New Delhi, India and much higher than those of European cities. The ratio of apparent to real nucleation rate is found to be a measure of number concentration of freshly produced particles by photo-chemical nucleation. The predicted number concentrations corresponding to measured distributions of mid-point diameter increases with the size for both 1 nm nucleated clusters and 3 nm particles. The database of all the possible event days and the event characteristics forms the basis for future works into the causes and implications of atmospheric particle formation at this location.  相似文献

Size-resolved aerosol particle samples in the size range 0.1–10 μm aerodynamic diameter were collected in the years 2003 and 2004 at an urban background station in Mainz, Germany. Size, morphology, chemical composition and mixing state of more than 5400 individual particles of 7 selected sampling days were analyzed in detail by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. In addition, transmission electron microscopy, aerosol mass spectrometry and atomic force microscopy were applied to obtain detailed information about the mixing state of the particles. The fine particle fraction (diameter<1 μm) is always dominated by complex secondary aerosol particles (⩾90% by number) independent from air mass origin. These particles are complex internal mixtures of ammonium and sodium sulfates, nitrates, and organic material. Between 20% and 40% of the complex secondary aerosol particles contain soot inclusions. The composition of the coarse particle fraction (>1 μm diameter) is strongly dependant on air mass history with variable abundances of complex secondary aerosol particles, aged sea salt, silicates, silicate mixtures, calcium sulfates, calcium sulfate/carbonate mixtures, calcium nitrate/carbonate mixtures, biological particles, and external soot.The dominance of complex secondary aerosol particles shows that reduction of the precursor gases is a major goal for successful reduction strategies for PM10.  相似文献

Whilst limited information on particle size distributions and number concentrations in cities is available, very few data on the very smallest of particles, nanoparticles, have been recorded. Measurements in this study show that road traffic and stationary combustion sources generate a significant number of nanoparticles of diameter <10 nm. Measurements at the roadside (4 m from the kerb) and downwind from the traffic (more than 25 m from the kerb) show that nanoparticles (<10 nm diameter) accounted for more than 36–44% of the total particle number concentrations. Measurements designed to sample the plume of individual vehicles showed that both a diesel- and a petrol-fuelled vehicle generated nanoparticles (<10 nm diameter). The fraction of nanoparticles was even greater in a plume 350 m downwind of a stationary combustion source. On a few occasions, a temporal association between nanoparticles in the size range 3–7 nm and solar radiation was observed in urban background air at times when no other local sources were influential, which suggests that homogeneous nucleation can also be an important source of particles in the urban atmosphere.  相似文献

The distribution of nano/micron dicarboxylic acids and inorganic ions in size-segregated suburban aerosol of southern Taiwan was studied for a PM episode and a non-episodic pollution period, revealing for the first time the distribution of these nanoscale particles in suburban aerosols. Inorganic species, especially nitrate, were present in higher concentrations during the PM episode. A combination of gas-to-nuclei conversion of nitrate particles and accumulation of secondary photochemical products originating from traffic-related emissions was likely a crucial cause of the PM episode. Sulfate, ammonium, and oxalic acid were the dominant anion, cation, and dicarboxylic acid, respectively, accounting for a minimum of 49% of the total anion, cation or dicarboxylic acid mass. Peak concentrations of these species occurred at 0.54 μm in the droplet mode during both non-episodic and PM episode periods, indicating an association with cloud-processed particles. On average, sulfate concentration was 16–17 times that of oxalic acid. Oxalic acid was nevertheless the most abundant dicarboxylic acid during both periods, followed by succinic, malonic, maleic, malic and tartaric acid. The mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of oxalic acid was 0.77 μm with a bi-modal presence at 0.54 μm and 18 nm during non-episodic pollution and an MMAD of 0.67 μm with mono-modal presence at 0.54 μm in PM episode aerosol. The concomitant formation of malonic acid and oxalic acid was attributed to in-cloud processes. During the PM episode in the 5–100 nm nanoscale range, an oxalic acid/sulfate mass ratio of 40.2–82.3% suggested a stronger formation potential for oxalic acid than for sulfate in the nuclei mode. For total cations (TC), total inorganic anions (TIA) and total dicarboxylic acids (TDA), major contributing particles were in the droplet mode, with least in the nuclei mode. The ratio of TDA to TIA in the nuclei mode increased greatly from 8.40% during the non-episodic pollution period to 28.08% during the PM episode, favoring dicarboxylic acid formation in the nuclei mode. The evidence suggests stronger formation strength and contribution potential exists for dicarboxylic acids than for inorganic salts in nanoscale particles, especially in PM episode aerosol.  相似文献
