Larvae of two Baetis species were used to investigate spatial and temporal variability in the bioavailabilities of cadmium, copper, lead, zinc and iron in the river Biala Przemsza and its tributaries draining an area of lead and zinc mining in Upper Silesia, Poland. Accumulated metal concentrations were measured in April, May, August and November 2000. Both species indicated significant local geographical variability in availabilities of zinc, iron, lead and cadmium, but not copper. Accumulated concentrations of lead, zinc and cadmium confirmed the high general contamination of the Biala Przemsza system by these three trace metals. Larvae showed little seasonal variation in concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and iron. Accumulated zinc concentrations were low in Baetis rhodani in August, perhaps as a result of insufficient time for high concentrations to accumulate since hatching of the larvae. Samples collected in August most nearly matched criteria of the greatest availability of larvae for collection and their size homogeneity, minimising the possibilities of any effect of differential larval size and/or age on accumulated metal concentrations. Mayfly larvae are members of a suite of potential stream biomonitors in Central Europe, which together can provide information on the different sources of bioavailable trace metals present in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The Flat Nickel mine at Evje in southern Norway was mined intensively between 1914 and 1945 with little regard for any potential environmental effect. Much of the ore extracted was smelted at a site adjacent to the river Otra south of Evje. Recent studies have revealed heavy metal pollution in the land surrounding the smelter and in water draining from the mine, leading to concern for the aquatic ecosystem in the river Otra. Brown trout were sampled from an uncontaminated lake nine kilometres upstream from the smelter, from the base of the Oddebekken (a tributary draining the mine water into the Otra), from sites immediately upstream and down stream of the smelter and from a site four kilometres down stream from the smelter. Fish from sites adjacent to the smelter and the base of the Oddebekken were smaller than those from the lake and down stream site. Fish from sites adjacent to the smelter and the base of the Oddebekken were more likely to be infected with parasitic nematode Eustrongylidies. At the population but not the individual level the presence of encapsulated parasitic larvae correlated with the concentrations of two metals, Ni and Cu, in fish.  相似文献

Larval stages of bivalve molluscs are highly sensitive to pollutants. Oysters from a hatchery from Normandy (English Channel) were induced to spawn, and fertilized eggs were exposed to copper or cadmium for 24 h. Metal accumulation (from 0.125 to 5 microg Cu L(-1) and from 25 to 200 microg Cd L(-1)) and MT concentrations were measured in larvae. Compared to controls, larvae accumulated copper and cadmium with an increase in MT concentrations particularly with cadmium (i.e. 130.96 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 12.69 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) at 1 microg Cu L(-1) versus 23.19 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 8.92 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) in control larvae; 334.3 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and 11.70 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) at 200 microg Cd L(-1) versus 0.87 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and 4.60 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) in control larvae). Larvae were also obtained from oysters of a clean area (Arcachon Bay) and a polluted zone (Bidassoa estuary) and exposed to copper in the laboratory, their MT concentration was measured as well as biomarkers of oxidative stress. Biomarker responses and sensitivity to copper for the larvae from Arcachon oysters were higher than for those from Bidassoa.  相似文献

Sediments were collected from a stream (upstream, outfall and downstream) receiving copper laden catfish pond effluent to assess toxicity to non-target biota. No significant reduction in Hyalella azteca survival or growth (10 d), or Typha latifolia germination and root and shoot growth (7 d) were observed after exposure to upstream and outfall sediments. A significant reduction in H. azteca survival was observed after exposure to the downstream sediment sample; however, no reduction in T. latifolia germination or seedling growth was detected. Bulk sediment copper concentrations in the upstream, outfall and downstream samples were 29, 31, and 25 mg Cu/kg dry weight, respectively. Interstitial water (IW) concentrations ranged from 0.053 to 0.14 mg Cu/l with 10 d IW toxicity units > or = 0.7. Outfall samples were amended with additional concentrations of copper sulfate so that bulk sediment measured concentrations in the amended samples were 172, 663, 1245, and 1515 mg Cu/kg dry weight. Survival was the most sensitive endpoint examined with respect to H. azteca with a no observed effects concentration (NOEC) and lowest observed effects concentration (LOEC) of 1245 and 1515 mg Cu/kg, respectively. NOEC and LOEC for T. latifolia root growth were 663 and 1245 mg Cu/kg, respectively. IW copper concentrations were > or = 0.86 mg Cu/l with H. azteca intersitial water toxicity unit (IWTU) concentrations > or = 1.2. Sequential extraction qualitatively revealed the carbonate and iron oxide fractions which accounted for a majority of the copper binding. In this instance, the copper which was applied to catfish ponds does not appear to be adversely impacting the receiving stream system.  相似文献

Soil and plants were sampled throughout winter and spring near a perennial stream traversing a restored mine site in a winter-rainy climate. Within 1m of an acidic reach of the stream, soil had pH 3-5 and 50-100 microg/g "bioavailable" copper (extractable with 0.01 M CaCl2). Soil 2-3 m from the stream had pH 5-8 and lower (less than 3 microg/g) bioavailable copper. "Oxide-bound" copper (extractable with 2N HCl) was 50-100 microg/g at most locations. Copper concentrations in the shoots of field-collected Bromus carinatus declined from 20 microg/g in winter to 2 microg/g in spring at all sampling sites. A similar temporal pattern was found in plants grown under controlled conditions. Thus B. carinatus has a developmental program for control of shoot copper concentration, causing a seasonally-varying pattern of copper phytoaccumulation over a large range of copper availability in the soil.  相似文献

We investigated the absorption rates of zinc, copper and lead in freshwater biofilm and assessed whether biofilm bacterial populations are affected by exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of these metals in flow chamber microcosms. Metals were rapidly accumulated by the biofilm and then retained for at least 14 days after transfer to uncontaminated water. Changes in bacterial populations were assessed by Automated Ribosomal Intergenic Spacer Analysis (ARISA) and 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. Significant differences in bacterial community structure occurred within only three days of exposure to metals and remained detectable at least 14 days after transfer to uncontaminated water. The rapid uptake of stormwater-associated metals and their retention in the biofilm highlight the potential role of biofilms in the transfer of metals to organisms at higher trophic levels. The sensitivity of stream biofilm bacterial populations to metal exposure supports their use as an indicator of stream ecological health.  相似文献

To circumvent some of the previous limitations associated with contaminant-monitoring programs, we tested the suitability of the water strider (Hemiptera: Gerridae) as a mercury sentinel by comparing total mercury concentrations in water striders and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) from a variety of stream sites in New Brunswick, Canada. There was a strong association between the two variables across sites (r(2)=0.81, P<0.001) in systems where both atmospheric deposition and a point source (an abandoned gold mine) were likely contributing to ambient mercury levels. In a small stream draining the gold mine tailings pile, water striders had mercury concentrations an order of magnitude higher than those from reference locations. Temporal variation at three southern New Brunswick stream sites was non-significant. These results suggest that water strider mercury levels accurately quantify food chain entry of the element. The use of sentinel species holds great potential for expanding contaminant-monitoring programs.  相似文献

A nonionic surfactant, polyoxyethylene Octyl phenyl ether (Triton-X), is added to a micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration process to lower the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The effects of adding Triton-X on the copper removal efficiency, the permeate SDS concentration, the copper binding capacity of SDS micelles, and membrane fouling are investigated. Our results show that the addition of Triton-X at concentrations greater than its CMC can reduce the SDS dosage required for effective Cu removal, and at the same time, minimize the permeate SDS concentration. Although, no adverse effect on the copper binding capacity of SDS micelle is observed by the addition of Triton-X, the membrane fouling is worsen. Cleaning the membrane with DI water allowed restoring the membrane flux, indicating that the fouling caused by Triton-X was reversible.  相似文献

The survival rates were studied of fertilized eggs, larvae, fry, and adults of pale chub Zacco platypus (Temminck and Schlegel) exposed to various concentrations of ammonia. There was a decrease in hatching rate and an increase in deformed alevins at a concentration of 0.9 mg liter(-1) of ammonia. All alevins were deformed at a concentration of 1.6 mg liter(-1) of ammonia and no eggs hatched at a concentration of 3.1 mg liter(-1) of ammonia. No larvae survived for 84, 24 and 12 h at concentrations of 1.2, 2.0 and 4.7 mg liter(-1) of ammonia, respectively. Eighty percent of the fry died after 168 h and no fry survived for 24 h at concentrations of 1.6 and 2.1 mg liter(-1) of ammonia, respectively. Eighty percent of the adults died after 24 h and no adult survived for 12 h at concentrations of 1.0 and 1.9 mg liter(-1), respectively. Larger adults were the most susceptible to ammonia. The order of resistance to ammonia was eggs, fry, larvae, and adults.  相似文献

Cd uptake, emergence, survival and locomotory activity at two pH levels were studied in a 27-day experiment with Leptophlebia marginata and in a 19-day experiment with Baetis rhodani. Model ecosystems containing recirculating stream water, patches of sediment and leaves, simulated a natural stream. During the experiments, concentrations of Al, Cd, Fe and Zn increased in the water at pH 5, while conductivity decreased. Cd was taken up by both species at a rate which indicated linear uptake kinetics. No steady state of Cd in the animals was observed. The larvae of B. rhodani contained significantly more Cd than the adults (p<0.001). Uptake of Cd by Baetis rhodani was higher at pH 7 than at pH 5 (p<0.05). The survivial of L. marginata was not influenced by pH and Cd stress, but emergence was significantly reduced (p<0.05). The survival and the emergence of B. rhodani were reduced by low pH and also by Cd addition (p<0.01). At pH 7, Cd had no significant adverse effect on survival. Locomotory activity of Baetis rhodani was reduced by low pH and additionally by Cd stress.  相似文献

Fourteen unpolluted Finnish headwater lakes with pH values varying from 4.8 to 7.0 were studied for trace-metal concentrations in water, sediment, aquatic plants (Nuphar luteum L., Sparganium sp.), aquatic insect larvae (Limnophilus sp., Phryganea sp.) and fish (Esox lucius L., Perca fluviatilis L., Coregonus sp., Salvelinus fontinalis L., Salmo trutta L.). Trace-metal deposition was estimated by analysing the snowpack. Non-parametric correlation analysis was carried out between trace metal concentrations in biota and pH, ANC, TOC, CA + Mg concentration in water and a given metal concentration in water and sediment. Bioaccumulation of several trace metals increased with increasing acidity and decreasing ANC in water. This was especially true for Pb and Cd. Aquatic plants were, in general, the best indicator group concerning differences in trace-metal bioaccumulation in lakes with different acidity. There was some evidence that a higher concentration of TOC in water may reduce bioaccumulation of Pb, Cd and Zn in aquatic plants and fish. The copper concentration in sediment was the only background variable explaining Cu concentration in aquatic insects. Multivariate analysis of the whole background data gave comparable preliminary results. Over 80% of the trace metal concentrations in biota of different lakes was explained by the background variables. In general, elevated concentrations of most of these trace metals can be expected to occur in the biota of acidified low calcareous lakes.  相似文献

Metal pollution e.g. copper, in water bodies occurs worldwide. Although copper is an essential trace metal, at certain levels it is still considered as pollutant. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exposure concentration on copper bioaccumulation in marbled crayfish (Procambarus sp.) by determining uptake and elimination kinetics. Crayfish were exposed to sub-lethal copper concentrations (average measured concentrations of 0.031 and 0.38 mg Cu L−1) for 14 d and transferred to copper-free water for another 14 d. At different time points during the uptake and elimination phases copper concentrations were measured in five organs (exoskeleton, gills, muscle, ovaries and hepatopancreas). At 0.031 mg Cu L−1, copper levels in the crayfish organs were not significantly increased compared to the control animals, suggesting effective regulation. Exposure to 0.38 mg Cu L−1 did lead to not significantly increased copper levels in muscles and ovaries, while the gills and exoskeleton, which are in direct contact with the water, showed significantly higher copper concentrations. In these four organs, copper showed fast uptake kinetics with equilibrium reached within 10 d of exposure. Copper accumulation was highest in the hepatopancreas; uptake in this storage organ steadily increased with time and did not reach equilibrium within the 14-d exposure period. Copper accumulation levels in the marbled crayfish found in this study were hepatopancreas > gills > exoskeleton > muscle.  相似文献

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in urban receiving waters   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The transport pathways of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCP) discharges within the urban water cycle include both combined and separate sewer systems with only the former receiving treatment. The dry-weather flow dilution patterns for selected PPCPs following discharge from a sewage treatment works (STW) to a North London stream indicate a persistent downstream increase in concentration. The dilution ratio analysis also indicates that the STW's final effluent only contributes a dilution of the endogenous concentrations already present in the river flow which reflects a progressive PPCP load with increasing urbanization; "worst-case" scenarios being probably related to wet-weather conditions. Maximum PPCP concentrations fall above the reported PEC levels and the analysis highlights the deficiencies of conventional acute toxicity for the evaluation of long-term effects of episodic urban discharges. Groundwater analysis points to sewer exfiltration which is limited in terms of PPCP impact to 25-50 cm depths.  相似文献

The toxicity of leachate water from acid-sulphate soil to the early life stages of Australian bass, Macquaria novemaculeata, incubated in seawater was evaluated. Acid-sulphate soil leachate water (pH> or =6.8) delayed the hatching of fertilised eggs, but after 48 h the per cent hatching was normal. In comparison, acidic saline water (25 per thousand salinity) at pH 4.0 or less prevented embryos from hatching. The survival of yolk-sac larvae exposed to acid-sulphate soil leachate water at a concentration of 32% in seawater and an initial pH of 7.2, was significantly different to controls after 96 hours. In corresponding tests with only acidified saline water (20 per thousand salinity), pH levels equal to or below 5.0 killed yolk-sac larvae after 96 h exposure. Aluminum showed a pH dependent toxicity to yolk-sac larvae, with added aluminium as low as 200 microg litre(-1) having a significant effect on larval survival at pH 5.5, and concentrations of 600-800 microg litre(-1) having a significant effect on larval survival at an initial pH range of 6.0 < pH < 6.8. It was concluded that significant mortality of the early life stages of Australian bass would occur if they are exposed to acid-sulphate soil leachate that results in a pH in the receiving estuarine water below 5.5, or when the pH is below 6.8 and aluminium is present at a total concentration of 800 microg litre(-1) or greater.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted comparing the individual removals of cadmium and copper from water via biosorption using Scenedesmus abundans, a common green algae, to removal in a multi-component system to determine competitive effects, if any, between the metals. The goal was to characterize the biological treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals using live aquatic species. In addition, experiments were performed to measure cell viability as a function of metal concentration and also to compare metal removal using living species to that using nonliving ones. It was shown that, while both living and nonliving S. abundans removed cadmium and copper from water, living algae significantly outperformed nonliving algae. Further, in characterizing biosorption by three concentrations of live S. abundans, capacity curves were created comparing the metal biosorbed per mass algae to the initial metal concentration in solution. The algae concentration was not a factor in the biosorption of either metal individually, such that the capacity of the algae for the metal increased with decreasing algae concentration. At the lowest algae concentration considered, competitive effects were observed at copper and cadmium concentrations above 4 mg/l each. At the highest algae concentration considered, no competitive effects were observed in the range of cadmium and copper concentrations studied (1-7 mg/l). It was concluded that biological treatment of heavy metal contaminated water is possible and that at adequately high algae concentrations, multi-component metal systems can be remediated to the same level as individual metals.  相似文献

Cohort life table experiments were conducted on M. macrocopa using copper at three nominal concentrations (as CuSO4, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mg L? 1, in addition to controls) for different periods of exposure (3 to 24 h). Age-specific survivorship of M. macrocopa decreased in relation to age of the cohort, concentration and duration of exposure to copper. Age-specific life expectancy curves also decreased with increasing age of the cohort. However, at low copper levels and shorter exposure time, there was an increase in life expectancy when the cohort was about 10 day old. Fecundity (m x ) was nearly regular in controls; however, at higher copper levels and longer duration of exposure, the offspring production was more oscillating. The offspring production completely ceased when continuously exposed to CuSO4 at 0.4 mg L? 1. Most of the measured demography variables significantly decreased with increasing concentration of Cu in the medium. The average lifespan and life expectancy at birth varied 2.9 to 9.6 and 2.4 to 9.1 days, respectively. Gross reproductive rate (GRR) varied from 31 to 89 offspring female? 1 lifespan? 1, while the survival-weighted net reproductive rates were nearly one-third of the GRR. Generation time of M. macrocopa varied from 5 to 7 days while the rate of population increase ranged from 0.36 to 0.84 per day. The results are discussed in relation to the sensitivity of M. macrocopa to copper toxicity and the necessity of amending the national water quality criteria in Mexico.  相似文献

Bisphenol A (BPA) (CAS 80-05-7) was analyzed in receiving waters upstream and downstream of US manufacturers (1996 and 1997) and processors (1997) during seasonal low flow periods. BPA was not detected (< 1 microgram/l) in any surface water sample in 1996 or at six of seven sites in 1997. Concentrations near the seventh site ranged from 2 to 8 micrograms/l; however, its receiving stream had no measurable flow and concentrations represent undiluted effluent. All surface water concentrations from this and other studies were less than the freshwater predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) of 64 micrograms/l, suggesting that BPA discharges from manufacturing and processing facilities to surface water do not pose an environmental concern.  相似文献

The accumulation of Cu and Ni in successive life stages of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar), feces, and foliage near an ore smelter at Sudbury, Ontario and a control site was investigated. Higher concentrations of Cu and Ni were found in all larval stages collected at Sudbury than in those from the control site indicating that elevated levels of these metals in the Sudbury environment is an important factor influencing body burdens. These differences were associated with higher metal concentrations in the foliage of host trees from this site. However, differences between sites became less significant for pupae and adult stages. At the Sudbury site, concentrations of Cu (microg g(-1) dry wt) decreased in successive instars and then increased in tissues of pupae and adults. In contrast, Cu content (microg/individual) increased during larval development and then decreased in pupae and adults. The pattern of Ni concentration and content in larvae from the Sudbury site was similar to that of Cu. Patterns of Cu and Ni concentration and content throughout the life stages are explained by changes in weight resulting in a dilution effect in early stages, and a concentrating effect in later stages. Differences in Cu and Ni concentration and content between Sudbury and control populations became less significant following the pupal stage suggesting metal elimination with the exuviae and meconium. This study also illustrates the importance of sampling all stages in an insect's development when measuring accumulation of metals. Fecal and foliar concentrations of Cu and Ni from Sudbury were not significantly different suggesting that metal assimilation is low. Even though gypsy moths from Sudbury contain elevated levels of Cu and Ni, metal burdens in their tissues do not represent a significant route through the food chain. However, the conversion of foliage with high metal content to feces implies that other ecosystem consequences should be investigated.  相似文献

The genotoxic action of copper (Cu) on the polytene chromosomes of Chironomus riparius was investigated by analysing structural and functional chromosome aberrations of fourth instars larvae hatched from eggs subject to acute (48 h) exposure with three environmentally relevant concentrations of aqueous Cu (0.005, 0.01, 0.05 mg/l). A dose dependent relationship was observed between Cu concentration and frequency of chromosomal aberrations. A significantly higher frequency of functional alterations, specifically decondensed centromeres and telomeres, and reduction in activity of Balbiani rings, was observed in treated material compared to control. A comparison of breakpoints resulting from treatment with chromium and lead from earlier studies with those Cu-induced identified a series of chromosomal weak points particularly vulnerable to trace metals. We also show that the appearance of structural and functional chromosome aberrations are more sensitive indicators of acute Cu toxicity in chironomid larvae than changes in external morphology.  相似文献

Seasonal and spatial variations in metal concentrations and pH were found in a stream at a restored copper mine site located near a massive sulfide deposit in the Foothill copper-zinc belt of the Sierra Nevada, California. At the mouth of the stream, copper concentrations increased and pH decreased with increased streamflow after the onset of winter rain and, unexpectedly, reached extreme values 1 or 2 months after peaks in the seasonal hydrographs. In contrast, aqueous zinc and sulfate concentrations were highest during low-flow periods. Spatial variation was assessed in 400 m of reach encompassing an acidic, metal-laden seep. At this seep, pH remained low (2-3) throughout the year, and copper concentrations were highest. In contrast, the zinc concentrations increased with downstream distance. These spatial patterns were caused by immobilization of copper by hydrous ferric oxides in benthic sediments, coupled with increasing downstream supply of zinc from groundwater seepage.  相似文献
