Six species of benthic diatoms and a natural benthic diatom community were cultured in flasks on a variety of sediments. Diatom species which secreted large quantities of mucilage were effective sediment stabilizers. These mucilage-secreting species significantly reduced resuspension and retarded laminar flow of the sediments when the culture flasks were agitated. Diatom species which secreted little or no mucilage were not effective sediment stabilizers. These non-mucilage-secreting species did not significantly effect resuspension or laminar flow of the sediments when the culture flasks were agitated. A sediment stabilizing mechanism based on the secretion of mucilage by pennate benthic diatoms is proposed. The effect such a process may have on distributional patterns of benthic invertebrates in areas where extensive diatom or other microalgal films occur is discussed. This work was supported by the Belle W. An intertidal creek in North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, USA, was sampled monthly for 1 year to determine the occurrence, abundance and diversity of fish species. Sampling was so conducted as to reduce sampling bias to a minimum and all individuals caught were weighed and measured. A total of 16,611 individuals weighing 202.45 kg and comprising 51 species and 25 families of fish was collected. Three diversity indices were calculated for species number. Analysis of variance revealed that season had a highly significant effect on all indices and the number of species, but had no effect on the number of individuals caught. This work was supported by the Belle W. Larval stages of the estuarine mud crab Eurypanopeus depressus were exposed to either 10 ppb cadmium or 1.8 ppb mercury in a flow-through rearing system. Development time from the megalopa to juvenile crab was extended in the cadmium-exposed individuals. Cadmium elevated the swimming rates of the late zoeal stages, while mercury depressed swimming rates of the early stages. Increased mortality of Stage I zoeae was observed after 24 h exposure to cadmium; increased mortality was also noted for megalopa and early crab stages reared in cadmium.Contribution No. 212 of the Belle W. Feeding rates, conversion efficiencies and growth of larvae of the mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus, an extremely abundant estuarine fish, were measured at temperatures ranging from 18° to 30°C. The food used was Artemia salina nauplii. At the time of total yolk sac absorption (5 to 7 days after hatching), the feeding rate decreased for a short time, an indication of a shift in metabolism. Higher feeding rates and growth occurred at higher rearing temperatures. The highest conversion efficiency (gross growth efficiency) was 1.1%, at 22°C. Mummichog larvae may be energetically inefficient compared with other fish species, but efficiency might not be critical for this fish, which is an opportunistic omnivore in an energy-rich environment.Contribution No. 291 of the Belle W. Effects of simultaneous short-term (7.5 to 60 min) thermal stress (24° to 34°C) and total residual chlorination (0.05 to 1.0 mg l-1) on specific development stages of the mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae), were investigated. For the embryonic stages, the total number of successfully hatched larvae was used as the criterion to measure effect. For the larval stages, survival 24 h after exposure was used. In the embryonic stages, temperature was the most important main variable. Only one embryonic stage (gastrula) was confounded by second-order interactions (temperature x duration of exposure x total residual chlorination). Both 0-day and 7-day-old larval stages showed significant higher-order interactions for all combinations of test parameters, suggesting the presence of synergistic effects of the three main experimental variables.Contribution No. 308 to the Gulf Breeze Environmental Research Laboratory. Gravid female Uca pugilator (Bosc) maintained in conditions of 14h L: 10h D light regime and constant temperature without simulated tides showed a significant positive correlation between time of hatch and time of the nighttime high tide. Light: Dark experiments showed no entrainment by LD cues. Larval hatching was delayed until dark when high tide occurred between 1900 and 2130 hrs. Hatch time was a positive linear function of the time of the nighttime high tide when high tide occurred after 2130 hrs. Time of hatch was delayed by the light period on days lacking a nighttime high tide. Experiments conducted under constant light (LL) and temperature, without simulated tides, indicated a persistent free-running rhythm of approximately 25 h 03 min, suggesting an endogenous timer. Rhythmic larval release on the nighttime high tide may be adaptive as a predator-avoidance mechanism for adult gravid females.Contribution No. 366 from the Belle W. The heritability of juvenile growth in the hard clamMercenaria mercenaria (L.) sampled from Wellfleet Harbor, USA, in 1987, was analyzed in two experiments using standard quantitative genetic methods. In the first experiment, culture density was not controlled and was found to have a significant impact upon the non-additive genetic component of growth, possibly through genotype-environment correlation. Variable clam density appeared to have little impact on the additive genetic variance component. Estimates of the narrow sense heritability, calculated from the additive genetic component, ranged from 0.72 (±0.32) to 0.91 (±0.17). Culture density was controlled in the second experiment. The narrow sense heritability estimate from this experiment was 0.37 (±0.13). These estimates suggest that selection, either natural or artificial could bring about rapid change in the mean phenotype(s) of juvenile growth characteristics in hard clams.Contribution no. 793 from the Belle W. The population dynamics of Euterpina acutifrons (Dana), a pelagic, harpacticoid copepod, are summarized in a life table based on field data. Highest mortality occurred in the last naupliar stage (NVI) and the first copepodite stage (CI). Overall survival in the field was 0.06% from the first naupliar stage (NI) to adult (CVI). The net reproductive rate (R o=55.590) and intrinsic rate of increase (I m=0.28) were sufficiently high to maintain a population with such a low survival rate in nature. E. acutifrons was present and breeding in the field from April through December. Low temperatures limited breeding, which began when the temperature reached 16.5°C and ceased when it fell to 11°C. Optimum temperature for North Inlet E. acutifrons was 25°C, with a maximum laboratory survival of 15.3% and a generation time of 10.3 days. Generation time in the field (20°C) was 14 days. Temperature also affected the abundance of dimorphic males. Small males were always most abundant, but peaked during the coldest month; large males became equal in abundance only during the varmest months.Contribution No. 298 from the Belle W. To elucidate the population dynamics of abundant meiofauna, a 15-month field study of 3 species of harpacticoid copepods was conducted in a South Carolina (USA) estuary. Per capita birth and death rates and average brood size (number of eggs per adult female) were lowest for Enhydrosoma propinguum (Brady), Microarthridion littorale (Poppe), and Stenhelia (Delavalia) bifidia (Coull) from November–February, indicating that food or density-independent factors such as temperature regulated winter densities. Reproduction for all species began in February, with the first appearance of copepodites approximately 1 month later. From March–October, M. littorale displayed high per capita birth and death rates (>0.6 individual-1 day-1), and high average brood size (8 to 9 eggs per adult female). As this species is epibenthic, and thus susceptible to grazing by detritivores, these data suggest that M. littorale was limited by predation. S. (Delavalia) bifidia displayed a sharp increase in density, birth rate and average brood size in July, but birth and death rates (0.3 individual-1 day-1) were always lower than those of M. littorale and average brood size gradually decreased from July–December. As this species burrows and is less susceptible to grazing predation, these data are consistent with the hypothesis that S. (Delavalia) bifidia became food-limited as population growth approached its carrying capacity. Although E. propinguum was the most abundant species, quantification of birth potential was not accomplished due to an underestimate of the number of ovigerous females. Therefore, little can be concluded about the mechanism of the summer density regulation of E. propinguum.Contribution No. 274 from the Belle W. A population of Palaemonetes pugio Holthuis 1949, inhabiting a fairly constant high salinity estuarine environment (North Inlet), exhibited more rapid growth, earlier first reproduction, a smaller clutch size, more fluctuating sex ratio, and shorter life span. A population in a less saline environment (Minim Creek) showed relatively slower growth, delayed first reproduction, larger clutch size, female-dominated sex ratio, and longer life span. Growth in both areas was rapid in summer and slower in winter, with the females growing much larger than the males. Summer generation females first reproduced at the age of 3.5 months in North Inlet and at 4.8 months in Minim Creek. Minim Creek females larger than 30-mm TL carried more eggs than North Inlet females of similar sizes. Life span in North Inlet was calculated to be 6–7 months for the summer generation and 9–10 months for the winter generation; in Minim Creek, the corresponding longevity estimates were 9–10 months and 12–13 months, respectively. Variations in life history patterns are hypothesized to be the results of numerous environmental factors acting differentially on the various life-stages of the organism. The results suggest that the reproductive flexibility of P. pugio enhances its ability to persist in a variety of environments.Contribution no. 426 of the Belle W. Benthic, free-living marine nematodes from two stations, one subtidal, one intertidal, in the North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, USA, have been characterized by measurement of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), carbon, caloric content, and ash-free dry weight. Two methods of extracting the organisms from the sediment were used. Resulting carbon to ATP ratios and population density data from ongoing North Inlet meiofauna studies show that the nematodes account for 0.11 to 6.33 g ATP per g dry weight of sediment, varying seasonally. The percentage of nematode ATP/g sediment is higher in the winter and lowest in the summer, and accounts for 68% to over 90% of the total sediment ATP. The findings of this study indicate that meiofauna, particularly nematodes, can no longer be overlooked as a separate entity in attempts to partition benthic systems.Contribution No. 173 from the Belle W. The community and population ecology of the gastrotrich fauna from a single subtidal sand flat in North Inlet, South Carolina, USA, was studied over a 15 month period. An analysis of the temporal and small-scale spatial (horizontal and vertical) distribution of the total assemblage and its component species was used to gain insight into the types of processes (biological and physical) which serve to organize the structure of this meiobenthic taxocene. Samples, consisting of replicate cores which were spaced at 4 horizontal scales (1 m, 25 cm, 10 cm, and 4 cm) and vertically partitioned, were collected at least once each month between February 1976 and April 1977. The assemblage was characterized by both high monthly densities (x) and species richness (38 species identified). The 8 dominant species, 5 of which are in the family Thaumastodermatidae, numerically comprise 89% of the total gastrotrich population. Horizontally, individuals are only slightly to moderately aggregated, forming clumps on the order of 4 to 10 cm in size. The patches of the dominant species tend to coincide. The vertical distribution of the fauna in the sediment is restricted to the top 10 cm, with species being segregated with respect to each other in this dimension. Temporal density fluctuations of all species tend to parallel changes in water temperature. Indirect evidence suggests that interspecific competition is the single most important process structuring this gastrotrich assemblage.Contribution No. 213 from the Belle W. The influence of tidal flux on the microbial populations in salt-marsh creeks was investigated. The characteristics of the water masses were demonstrated by the use of statistical analyses of the physical-chemical factors influencing the microbial community. Pearson's r, Kendall's , as well as simple and multiple regression analyses demonstrated the unique character of the water masses during ebb and flood tides. Water entering the creeks with a rising tide was characterized by a distinct absence of significant linear relationships between the variables, while significant associations were indicated in ebb-tide water. Particulate organic carbon was an important variable only during a falling tide.Contribution No. 157 of the Belle W. Baruch Library in Marine Science.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the growth, respiration and assimilation of the intertidal oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) of different sizes were determined. The instantaneous growth rates for intertidal oysters decreased with increasing size and with lower temperatures. Q10 values computed from instantaneous growth rates were approximately 2 during the warm growing season, but were higher in the colder months. Oxygen consumption increased with temperature and body size. A model was developed to predict oxygen consumption at any environmental temperature from 10° to 30°C for oysters ranging in weight from 0.1 to 100.0 g. Q10 values computed from oxygen-consumption rates decreased with increasing temperature and increasing body size. Intertidal oysters utilize a large proportion of their assimilated energy in growth.Supported by a Belle W. Baruch Fellowship in Marine Ecology.  相似文献

The salt marsh ecosystem at North Inlet, South Carolina, USA consistently exported dissolved inorganic nitrogen via tidal exchange with the coastal Atlantic Ocean. Concentrations centrations of NH 4 + and NO 3 - +NO 2 - displayed distinct tidal patterns with rising values during ebb flow. These patterns suggest the importance of biogeochemical processes in the flux of material from the salt marsh. NH 4 + export peaked during the summer (15 to 20 mg m-2 tide-1) during a net balance of tidal water exchange. Remineralization of NH 4 + within the salt marsh system appears to be contributing to the estimated annual net export of bout 4.7 g NH 4 + -N m-2 yr-1. NO 3 - +NO 2 - exports were higher in the fall and winter of 1979 (2 to 4 mg N m-2 tide-1). The winter export coincided with a considerable net export of water with no distinctive concentration patterns, suggesting a simple advective export. However, the fall peak of NO 3 - +NO 2 - export occurred during a period of net water balance in tidal exchange and an insignificant freshwater input from the western, forested boundary. During the summer and fall, tidal concentration patterns were particularly apparent, suggesting that nitrification within the salt marsh system was contributing to the estimated annual net export of ca 0.6 g NO 3 - +NO 2 - -N m-2 yr-1.Contribution No. 637 from the Belle W. In 1974 the authors collected, sorted and enumerated meiofauna from 400, 800 and 4000 m off North Carolina, USA. Samples were replicated respectively with 4 boxcores and 21 subsamples, 2 boxcores and 7 subsamples and 2 boxcores and 8 subsamples. Total meiofaunal numbers were highest in fine silt sediment at 800 m ( =891.9 10 cm–2) and lowest in very fine silt at 4000 m ( =73.5 10 cm–2). Fine sand at 400 m yielded a mean of 442.4 10 cm–2. At all depths, most fauna were located in the upper 3 cm of sediment ( depth distribution=2.2 cm), and typically only nematodes and foraminiferans were found below 4 cm. Total community abundances significantly differed with depth; however, there were no differences among replicate boxcores at particular depths. Since most (85.7%) of the variance was associated with subsamples from a boxcore, it appears that meiofauna densities are homomeneous within large areas at particular depths, and that patchiness is a smallscale phenomenon at the level of the 10 cm2 subsampler. Comparisons of sorting efficiencies of live and preserved samples indicated that to accurately enumerate formainiferans, samples must first be fixed and stained, while turbellarians and oligochaetes must be sorted live.Contribution No. 151 from the Belle W. Spring distributions of some numerically dominant copepods reflect associations with two distinct water masses separated along the 80- to 100-m isobaths. Seaward of this middle shelf front, the oceanic Bering Sea hosts populations of Calanus cristatus, C. plumchrus, and Eucalanus bungii bungii; Metridia pacifica, Oithona similis, and Pseudocalanus spp. are also present. The large oceanic species are much less abundant in waters shallower than 80 m where the community is seasonally dominated by smaller copepods, O. similis, Acartia longiremis, and Pseudocalanus spp. Experimental and field-derived estimates of carbon ingestion indicate that the oceanic/outer shelf copepods can occasionally graze the equivalent of the daily plant production and probably routinely remove 20–30% of the primary productivity. Conversely, stocks of middle shelf copepods rarely ingest more than 5% of the plant carbon productivity. During 45 d between mid April to late May, 1979, approximately three times more organic matter was ingested m-2 by the outer shelf/oceanic copepod community than by middle shelf species. This imbalance in cross-shelf grazing permits middle shelf phytoplankton stocks to grow rapidly to bloom proportions, and to sink ungrazed to the seabed. Over the outer shelf and particularly along the shelf break, a much closer coupling to phytoplankton supports a large biomass of oceanic grazers. Here, copepod stocks approaching 45 g dry wt m-2 occur in late spring as a narrow band at the shelf break.Supported by National Science Foundation Grant DPP 76-23340Contribution no. 485, Institute of Marine Science, University of Alaska, Fairbanks  相似文献

Significant concentrations of the large oncholaimid Metoncholaimus scissus Wieser and Hopper (1967) (>7000 animals/24 cm2 area or 2.68x106 specimens/m2) have been noted in soft-bottom turtle grass communities. Activities of the nematode frequently show an indirect relationship to blooms of the benthic diatom Pleurosigma balticum. Analysis of biomass data for M. scissus (as much as 28 g wet weight/m2) demonstrate the importance of microsite activity and sensitivity of the species to small significant changes in the benthic environment. This work was supported by grant GM 12824 from the National Institutes of Health to the Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Miami. Biodeposition by salt-marsh invertebrates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The importance of salt-marsh invertebrate biodeposits in biogeochemical cycles is discussed. Yearly biodeposition rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, maganese, copper, zinc, and molybdenum are reported for 5 invertebrate species. The 5 species (Littorina irrorata, Arcatula demissa, Polymesoda caroliniana, Uca pugnax and U. pugilator) deposit 1709 g dry weight m2 year-1, of which 455 g m2 year-1 is organic material. Calculations suggest that the invertebrates are capable of processing 53% of the marsh's yearly production, but the actual amount utilized is probably substantially less than this.Contribution No. 716 from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and Contribution No. 295 from the University of Georgia Marine Institute.  相似文献

The adenylate energy charge ratio (EC) of 8 species of zooplankton ranged from 0.70 to 0.89. Eucalanus subcrassus had significantly (P<0.05) lower EC when captured during a 30-min tow than during a 3-min tow, indicating stress at capture. The concentration of ATP in the 8 species ranged from 9.1 to 36.0 g/mg protein and from 0.17 to 15.7 g/mg dry weight. Excluding a low value for the ctenophore Pleurobrachia sp., the average concentration was 8.1 g ATP/mg dry weight, which is equivalent to an approximate C/ATP ratio of 50.Contribution from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Australia, and the Institute of Marine Biology, University of Bergen, Norway  相似文献
