Differentiation in lipid content, composition of lipid classes, fatty acids and sterols of Macoma balthica (L.) collected from various parts of the Gulf of Gdask was observed. The clams taken from the Inner Puck Bay contained significantly lower amounts of lipids, particularly of triglycerides, oleopalmitic acid and 24-methylenecholesterol. It is suggested that this differentiation is related to variability of trophic conditions in the Gulf of Gdask.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in lipid, glycogen, protein (Nx6.25), and ash content of the meat of Macoma balthica (L.) from five sampling sites in the Gulf of Gdask were studied from 1981 to 1984. Lipid and glycogen were stored mainly during spring and at the beginning of summer. The lipid content of up to 36% of the dry weight observed in populations from the Gulf of Gdask are among the highest values reported for bivalve molluscs. Potential causes of this high value are discussed.  相似文献

Polonium-210 and lead-210 in Antarctic marine biota and sea water   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Concentrations of the naturally-ocurring radionuclides 210Po and 210Pb were measured in krill (Euphausia superba), mesozooplankton, phytoplankton and sea water collected during the South African SIBEX cruise to the Antarctic in autumn 1984. The data reported constitute the first substantial measurements on 210Po and 210Pb in such samples in the Antarctic Ocean. The concentrations of 210Po in mesozooplankton and phytoplankton are unexceptional in comparison with those from other oceans. The SIBEX E. superba, however, have higher levels of 210Po than usually found in euphausiids. The 210Po data, combined with reasonable estimates of biological quantitites such as the fractional assimilation, are used to obtain information about the diet of E. superba. It is suggested that the higher 210Po in the SIBEX E. superba reflects a change from an almost entirely phytoplanktonic diet in summer to a more omnivorous diet as winter approaches. The data show that there are allometric relationships between the 210Po content of euphausiids and animal size; these are discussed briefly. The limited sea-water data presented are characterized by unusually high 210Po:210Pb activity ratios and need further investigation.  相似文献

The material examined consisted of adult specimens (male and female) of the shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) collected during the summer of 1967 from the Gdask Bay of the Baltic Sea. Column and thin-layer chromatography was used for the separation of the carotenoids. The ester compounds and protein complexes of carotenoids were hydrolized with 15% KOH in methanol at room temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere for 48 h. The absorption maxima of the various fractions and spots were determined on the spectrophotometer Specol after eluation. The identification of the carotenoids was based mainly on the absorption maxima in appropriate organic solvents and on the Rt values. The acetone extract from the Crangon crangon specimens gave a light blue fluorescence and absorption maxima at wavelengths of 447, 463, 595 to 596 and 667 m. The following carotenoids were found to be present in the adult specimens of Crangon crangon: -carotene, cantaxanthin, astaxanthin, free and esterified lutein, zeaxanthin, and a form of xanthophyll which was not precisely identified. In addition to the above, biliary dyes were also found, probably of the mesobiliviolin and mesobilirhodin type.  相似文献

The effect is studied of different inorganic phosphorus concentrations on changes in growth rates of 7 diatom species isolated from the plankton of the Black Sea. All species examined increase their cell-division rate with increasing phosphorus concentration in the medium. The phosphorus concentrations have been determined above which division rate is not limited by phosphorus content in the medium. The non-limiting concentration amounts to V/V m =0.9. In the species studied, non-limiting concentrations ranged from 1 to 30 g P/1. The highest values were obtained for relatively large-sized species. The ratio of cell surface to volume tended to be inversely related to the growth-rate-limiting concentration. Minimal values of phosphorus content in cells have been calculated to range from 0.6 to 4.0·10–17 g.at–P/–3. Based on a comparison of phosphate levels in the Black Sea with experimentally-derived rate-limiting concentrations, it is concluded that phosphorus does not limit the reproduction rate of phytoplankton in the more productive regions of the Black Sea or in the lower strata of the euphotic zone.  相似文献

Sustained strong offshore winds generate upwelling in the fjords of northern South Georgia. Deepwater plankton is pumped by upwelling towards sandy beaches at the heads of the fjords; calanoid copepods, chaetognaths and pteropods are stranded by the sand filter in large quantities on falling tides. Local benthonic species (harpacticoid copepods and amphipods) are present in the plankton but do not strand. Strandlines are very rich (<4 kg wet mass m-2) and provide large fractions of the food of kelp gulls, sheathbills and terns in the austral summer. Birds can only exploit fresh strandlines, since air-drying of the plankton soon makes it too salty to eat.  相似文献

210Po and 210Pb have been measured systematically in whole animals, muscle and hepatopancreas of crustaceans and of molluscan cephalopods representative of a pelagic and benthic food chain. The same nuclides were also measured in liver, pyloric caecum, stomach contents and muscle of tuna. The concentration factors from sea water to whole animals were approximately constant along both food chains, being of the order of 104 for 210Po and 102 for 210Pb. The highest concentration factors were found in shrimp of the genus Sergestes. In muscle, the concentration factors were an order of magnitude less; in the hepatopancreas, they were an order of magnitude higher, reaching 106 in shrimp of the genus Sergestes. Such concentrations imply alpha-radiation doses of the order of 10 rem per year and more in this organ, which contains about 50 to 90% of the 210Po in the whole animal in the 11 species analyzed. A detailed study of the intracellular behaviour of 210Po in the hepatopancreas is clearly indicated. 210Po can be used as a sensitive natural tracer in biological systems. Thus, feeding Meganyctiphanes norvegica in the laboratory on food low in 210Po led to an approximate value of about 61/2 days for the biological half-life of 210Po in the hepatopancreas of this euphausiid. Furthermore, the data on 210Po and 210Pb in the cephalopod hepatopancreas allowed the time of conservation of frozen squid which had been bought at the market to be estimated.  相似文献

A decreasing gradation in the plankton standing stock of the Bristol Channel was observed from the seaward section to the inner, less saline, reaches. Two sub-regions of our survey, the North Outer Channel (NOC) and the Inner Channel (IC), represented the extremes of this gradient and were selected for detailed comparison. The integrated zooplankton biomass, over the 307 d sampling period (4 November 1973 to 6 September 1974), was 2 475 mg C m-3 (266 mg C m-2 d-1) in the NOC and 335 mg C m-3 (20 mg C m-2 d-1) in the IC. The omnivorous plankton accounted for 76% of the standing stock in the NOC and 89% in the IC, of which 58 and 23% were meroplankton and 39 and 71% were holoplankton, respectively; the remainder was unassigned. The majority of the meroplankton in both subregions was decapod larvae and adults, whereas the holoplankton biomass was dominated in the NOC by copepods (89%) and in the IC by mysids (57%), mainly Schistomyzis spiritus. Centropages hamatus was the most abundant copepod species in the NOC and accounted for 32% of the total holoplankton omnivore standing stock. In the NOC and IC, the carnivorous plankton accounted for 24 and 11% of the total plankton biomass, respectively. In the two sub-regions, 20 and 21% of the carnivores were meroplanktonic (primarily larvae of sprats and pilchards), while the holoplankton carnivores contributed 75 and 74% to the NOC and IC, respectively (Sagitta elegans, Pleurobrachia pileus). S. elegans dominated the holoplankton carnivore biomass for the majority of the year and accounted for 96% in the NOC and 60% in the IC. The integrated total particulate carbon over the 307 d period was 200 g C m-3 (6 600 g C m-2) in the NOC and 838 g C m-3 (15 084 g C m-2) in the IC. The annual primary production ranged from 164.9 g C m-2 yr-1 in the Outer Channel (North and South) to 6.8 g C m-2 yr-1 in the IC. The zooplankton biomass reached a maximum in July. The total particulate carbon (TPC) in July was 400 mg C m-3 in the NOC of which ca. 78 mg C m-3 were phytoplankton and ca. 21 mg C m-3 were zooplankton; these values compare favourably with those found in the adjoining Celtic Sea. In the IC, the TPC was 2 800 mg C m-3, of which ca. 107 mg C m-3 were phytoplankton and 2.8 mg C m-3 were zooplankton. From the low primary production estimates for the IC it can be concluded that the majority of the chlorophyll, like the TPC, was allochthonous in origin. Furthermore it is suggested that zooplankton plays a minor role in this estuarine ecosystem and is not the main consumer of the suspended particulate carbon; the benthic filter-feeding communities are presumed to fulfill this role in the Bristol Channel.  相似文献

A distinctive chlorophyll maximum was detected around 60-m depth in the western North Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea, and almost 55% of the total chlorophyll in the entire water column was found within 50 m around the subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer. More than 70% of the chlorophyll was contained in picoplankton which passed through a 3-m Nuclepore but retained on 0.22-m Millipore filters at the SCM as well as the surface layers. By transmission electron microscopic observations, the picoplankton were identified as aChlorella-like coccoid green alga having a section size of 1.2 to 1.5 m and cyanobacteria of 0.5 to 2 m. No obvious difference in these two dominant groups was observed in the SCM and the surface samples except in numerous and heavily stacked thylakoids in the former samples.  相似文献

The concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb were determined in more than 30 species of marine shrimp. Samples were collected in the years 1977 to 1980; most were from the Mediterrancean Sea near Monaco, the remainder from Kuwait, South Africa, USA and Great Britain. The median 210Po concentration was 8.0 pCi g-1 dry wt in the whole shrimp and 85 pCi g-1 dry in the hepatopancreas; the corresponding 210Po:210Pb activity ratios were 77 and 138, respectively. The range of concentrations covered more than two orders of magnitude for both nuclides. The variations in the levels of 210Po, in particular, could be related to biological and environmental factors; thus, penaeid shrimp had 210Po at median concentrations some three to four times higher than carid shrimp, and there was a steady increase in the median 210Po concentration as one moved from estuarine to coastal to pelagic to deep-pelagic species. 210Po levels were highest in 3 species of deep-pelagic penaeids, where a median 210Po concentration in the whole shrimp of 43 pCi g-1 dry wt was found. The natural radiation dose received by the hepatopancreas of such individuals will be of the order of 100 rem per yr. Elevated 210Po was also found in 4 species collected near Kuwait. The 210Po data are interpreted as indicating changes in the food regime of different shrimp; specifically it is suggested that 210Po-rich items such as hepatopancreas, faecal pellets and organic particulates are likely to be important in the diet of shrimp which feed at depth in the ocean. It is suggested further that the ultimate availability of 210Po to the foodchain depends on its form in sea water, and the need for information concerning the degree of organic binding of 210Po in natural waters in stressed.  相似文献

The vertical structure, composition and productivity of a plankton community was studied in the Japan Sea in June, 1972 during a period of thermocline formation; the parameters measured were: phytoplankton production and biomass; number, biomass, and production of planktonic bacteria; biomass of phagotrophic flagellates, ciliates and remaining microzooplankton. The concentration of micro- and mesozooplankton attained a basic maximum in a layer near the upper part of the thermocline. The biomass and calculated production of the heterotrophic part of the community exceeded considerably the amount of primary production. The heterotrophic phase of the seasonal succession of a plankton community in a temperate sea is described, when heterotrophic metabolism and production predominate. Heterotrophs at this stage use mostly energy from organic matter accumulated during the previous spring phytoplankton bloom.  相似文献

Light intensity within the range of 40 to 210 E · m-2 · s-1 had relatively little effect on the abundance, length or distribution of Ceramium rubrum unicellular, hyaline hairs. External NH 4 + concentrations less than 0.5 M stimulated hair initiation and growth in apical regions of the thalli. Ammonium concentrations in excess of 20 M inhibited hair formation on all regions of the thalli. Ammonium uptake velocities of plants with hairs were approximately twice those of plants without hairs. In a study to assess qualitatively the importance of organic matter derived from kelp production in the Aleutian Islands of subarctic Alaka, replicated samples of autotrophic sources and primary and secondary consumer organisms were sampled for 13C among sources, sites, (treatment) islands, and years. Unanticipated variation in the 13C of kelps occurred among overtly similar sites at different islands. Variation in the 13C of the surface canopy-forming kelp Alaria fistulosa was particularly extreme, ranging from-15.5 to-28.0 compared to the understory kelps, Laminaria spp. A. fistulosa 13C varied by as much as 6 to 7 among similar sites at a given island within years, and by as much as 3 to 4 between years at the same sampling site. In serveral cases, 13C variation was weakly tracked by some consumer organisms, suggesting that even detritus pathways through the food web can be localized and tightly coupled. Dynamic cycles in the concentration and 13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and aqueous CO2 concentration ([CO2]aq) were measured at three sites on one island. The 13C or organic carbon fixed by A. fistulosa, calculated from diurnal DIC concentration and 13C measurements, varied by 15 and varied inversely with [CO2]aq concentrations. Local DIC variability, probably resulting from high productivity and decreased turbulence in dense kelp habitats, provides a possible mechanism of variation in kelp 13C. The short-term variability in the 13C of organic carbon fixed by kelps indicates that sampling methodology and design must assess this potential variation in marine macrophyte 13C before making assumptions about the transfer of 13C-invariate organic matter to higher trophic levels. On the positive side, a predictable relationship between [CO2]aq concentration and kelp 13C offers a potentially robust means to assess productivity effects on CO2 limination in kelps and other complex aquatic macrophyte habitats.  相似文献

After treatment with 1.0 and 3.3 g Pb kg-1 for 20 weeks in flowing seawater at ambient salinity and temperature, Crassostrea virginica accumulated as much as 6.57 and 11.42 g g-1 dry weight, respectively, and no mortalities were recorded. Lead uptake was curvilinear; however, the general trend was an increase in lead concentration over time. Dry weight of the oyster had no significant relation with tissue lead concentration (g g-1); however, a significant positive relationship existed between weight and lead content (g). A decrease in lead concentration in the tissues occurred from mid-August to mid-September despite continuous addition of lead to the seawater. Addition of lead to the seawater was terminated after 20 weeks (October), and lead loss was studied for the following 12 weeks. Lead loss was studied well after spawning in an attempt to eliminate any influence this might have on lead concentration in the tissues. After 4 weeks, approximately 54% of the accumulated lead was lost under conditions of a natural temperature decline. The biological half-life of lead in C. virginica tissues was calculated to be 5.5 weeks. In the ensuing 8 weeks, little or no lead loss was observed. Larvae from each treatment developed to the straight-hinged stage within 48 h with no apparent abnormalities. Lead appeared to have no adverse effect on larvae when parents had been treated with 1.0 and 3.3 g kg-1 seawater for 10 weeks.  相似文献

Specimens of the oceanic decapod Systellaspis debilis were collected from six sites in the East Atlantic Ocean between 1970 and 1984, and were analysed for Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and Cd. The data confirm that there are small but significant differences in mean metal concentrations from some sites which showed no obvious pattern in relation to geographic location of the samples. As a result, ranges of site means are quoted as baseline levels for each metal (g g-1 dry wt): 2.3 to 2.9 g Mn g-1, 31.2 to 77.8 g Fe g-1, 25.9 to 83.4 g Cu g-1, 41.9 to 92.9 gZn g-1, 11.1 to 31.8 g Cd g-1. The concentration of cadmium in S. debilis from all sites was raised relative to cadmium concentrations reported for coastal decapods, perhaps as a result of dietary enrichment. Metal accumulation may provide useful information for understanding the complex feeding behaviour of many oceanic animals.  相似文献

A detailed study of 210Po, the predominant alpha-emitting nuclide found in most marine organisms, has been undertaken in a particular zooplanktonic species, the euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica. The purpose was to obtain information concerning the origin, the localization and the flux of the nuclide in and through this organism. Measurements of 210Po were made in euphausiids of different sizes, in dissected organs and tissues, and in excretion products. The results show higher concentrations in the smaller specimens; this fact cannot be explained on the basis of surface adsorption, but is probably related to the ingestion of food. Dissection results show that the distribution of 210Po in euphausiids is not homogeneous, but that the majority is concentrated in the internal organs, the alimentary tract and the hepatopancreas in particular. The natural radiation dose received by these organs is in consequence much higher than that received by the whole animal. Use of a dynamic model allowed the flux of 210Po through M. norvegica to be calculated. The calculations confirm that food is the principal source of 210Po for this species, and clearly show that fecal pellets constitute the major elimination route. Extrapolation of the data to zooplankton in general leads to the conclusion that zooplankton metabolic activity plays an important role in transporting 210Po from the surface layers of the ocean to depth.  相似文献

Trials for determination of culture conditions for the marine cyanophytes of Trichodesmium erythraeum and T. thiebautii were made with use of a synthetic medium. The Aquil medium, either with or without combined nitrogen, brought about stable growth of the two strains, T. erythraeum and T. thiebautii. However, they failed to grow in an ASP7 medium. The failure was found to be due to the toxic effect of Tris-aminomethane, the pH-buffer in this medium. Two important chemical conditions for the stable growth of Trichodesmium spp. were revealed. (1) Stable growth was supported by Ca2+ at high concentrations; in a concentration lower than 0.9 mM, cell-lysis promptly occurred, while the cells could grow without cell-lysis at Ca2+ concentrations higher than 7.5 mM even at a salinity as low as 19 S. Ca2+ is probably essential for the osmotic regulation in this organism. (2) Phosphate-toxicity at high concentrations was at least partly due to heavy metal(s) contaminating the reagent of inorganic phosphate. After treatment with a Chelex-100 column, phosphate concentration could be increased up to four times the previous concentrations without toxicity.  相似文献

The present study demonstrates that a distinct land-associated community of mesopelagic micronekton exists around the Hawaiian Islands. This mesopelagic-boundary community replaces the oceanic mesopelagic community over bottom depths of approx 400 to 700 m and includes about 14 species of fishes, 5 of shrimps and 4 of squids. Similar species of the mesopelagic micronekton have been reported in association with other landmasses at the boundary between the oceanic mesopelagic realm and upper continental or island slopes. These species may form a cosmopolitan mesopelagic-boundary community which shows regional differences in taxonomic composition, abundance and diversity. Boundary communities, with populations which are both tightly constrained geographically and relatively accessible to shore-based research programs, offer unique opportunities for studying biological processes of the mesopelagic realm and the interactions between neritic and oceanic populations. Data is presented from three midwater and two neuston sampling projects undertaken around the main Hawaiian Islands between 1987 and 1989; additional evidence from the literature is also discussed.  相似文献

Marine invertebrates are thought to accumulate 210Po primarily from their food. In this study, a pulse-chase methodology was used to examine the assimilation and depuration of 210Po by Mytilus edulis from the common marine alga Isochrysis galbana. The digestion of 210Po from I. galbana occurred via a biphasic process, characteristic of a rapid (extracellular) and slow (intracellular) digestion typical of marine bivalves. The mantle/gill and foot have no known digestive role, yet their 210Po specific activities increased after 24 h. It is proposed that this increase in 210Po specific activity was related to 210Po being incorporated into these tissues from 210Po assimilated from I. galbana during extracellular digestion. It is proposed that the linear loss of 210Po previously accumulated by control mussels was related to the continual state of renewal and replacement of cellular proteins, with 210Po turnover and metabolism governed by protein turnover and metabolism. M. edulis' assimilation efficiency of 210Po from the 210Po-labelled alga was calculated to be 17.2 ± 2.1%, and thus similar to that of Ag, Cd, Co, Se and Zn by bivalves from other marine algae species. The marine diatoms Lauderia annulata Cleve and Thalassiosira rotula Meunier were grown at different salinities (20, 35 and 45) and exposed to different levels of midultraviolet, UV-B) 439, 717 and 1230 J m-2 d-1, weighted) for 2 d. A low UV-B dose (439 J m-2 d-1) usually caused a slight increase in biomass production (dry weight) compared to non-UV-B irradiated cells. Enhanced UV-B radiation (717 J m-2 d-1) depressed protein and pigment content (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c 1+c2 and carotenoids), especially in algae grown at 20 or 35 salt concentration of the nutrient solution. The effect of UV-B radiation (717 J m-2 d-1) on the pattern and concentration of amino acids was species-dependent. Aspartic acid was reduced in all tested diatoms. A drastic increase in glutamine and a reduction in glutamic acid pools could be observed in L. annulata samples, but no significant variation of the impact of UV-B was found in dependence on the salt concentration of the nutrient medium. T. rotula cells grown at 35 S showed an increase of glutamic acid and a decrease of glutamine levels after UV-B radiation. The results are discussed in relation to the impact of UV-B upon carbon and nitrogen metabolism.  相似文献
