Spatial and temporal changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter in a semi-enclosed marine system (Stagnone di Marsala, Mediterranean Sea) were studied, on a monthly basis, from January to December 1994, in order to assess nutritional value of suspended particles for benthic suspension feeders. According to previous findings, the study site displayed a strong oligotrophy. Chlorophyll-a accounted for a very low fraction of the total suspended matter pool (0.1%), whereas at least 75% of POC was of detrital/heterotrophic origin. POC: PON ratio values indicate that bacterioplankton biomass accounted for a significant fraction of the total POC pool, displaying values comparable to those of the phytoplankton biomass (phytoplankton to bacterial biomass ratio was about (1). Temporal and spatial changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter were rather limited and related to its sources, the main of which is represented by detrital particles released by the Posidonia oceanica (L.) beds. the comparison between our results and those encountered in other coastal lagoons indicates that the low abundance of suspension-feeding organisms observed in the study area is related to the “quality depression” of particles due to the dilution of high quality compounds (i.e., biopolymeric carbon) in a largely inorganic matrix. This result leads us to conclude that, to reach the same amount of high quality particulate food, a suspension feeder mollusc in the Marsala lagoon would need to filter a sea water volume around 3 times higher than in other Mediterranean coastal lagoons.  相似文献

The distribution and composition of suspended particulate matter in the sea is very complex and not well understood. In this study, 3 different approaches were used to estimate the quantity and quality of suspended particulate matter in 34 samples from the euphotic zone of 9 stations in the Gulf of California. The results from electronic, microscopic and chemical analyses showed that most parameters measured were significantly correlated, e.g. the total particulate volume from particles of 2 to 150 diameter, as obtained from the Coulter Counter, proved to be significantly related to such parameters as seston, particulate nitrogen, particulate carbon, phytoplankton carbon and chlorophylla. It can be concluded from this study that the Coulter Counter can be a very useful instrument to determine, with little effort, the size, distribution, and volume of particulate suspended matter in the sea. These data can then be used to calculate some important biological parameters which are necessary to establish meaningful models of phytoplankton production. More detailed studies are necessary to prove the above mentioned relationships in depth, space and time.Contribution from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. Seasonal and spatial changes in seston, (POC), particulate organic carbon, (PON) particulate organic nitrogen and chlorophyll-a concentrations were studied on a monthly basis in a Mediterranean shallow coastal area (Stagnone di Marsala, Western Sicily) in order to gather information on factors controlling particulate organic matter distribution and composition. Despite a low POC/PON ratios (ranging from 5 to 11), the ratio of POC to chlorophyll (CHL-a) displayed very high values (annual average of 647). the data reported in this study, highlighting the oligotrophy of the Stagnone di Marsala area, indicate that the trophic state of the basin was controlled by different degrees of wind exposure (mean monthly wind velocity at exposed sites ranged between 4.2 and 6.7 m s-1) and by gradients in vegetation cover. Particle-size distributions and several biochemical components of seston were studied from October 1986 to December 1987 in surface waters of the Bay of Biscay. Variance partitioning of hydrographic and seston parameters indicates that, although seasonal variability related to the thermal cycle was important, most of the differences in seston concentration were caused by spatial components of variance. Changes in the vertical structure of the water column appeared to be the principal source of variability. Phytoplankton blooms in spring and fall and the effects of the coastal upwelling and the thermocline during summer were traced using seston concentration and biochemical composition. The different seston measurements were scaled according to their correlations with total concentration and particle size. Photosynthetic pigment biomass was related to both large and small partieles. However, concentrations of particulate proteins, lipids and carbohydrates were more related to small particles. Although not specifically analysed, low concentrations of inorganic particles and detritus can be expected in the study area, thus most of the particulate organic matter was associated with small, non-pigmented organisms, particularly in surface waters during the period of thermal stratification. The variability in concentrations of total seston and particulate organic matter was mainly due to variations in particulate proteins, lipids and carbohydrates; pigment concentrations were of secondary importance. Expressed as the ratio chlorophyll a: particulate protein-nitrogen, phytoplankton constituted an important fraction of the microplankton biomass only during spring blooms, when it averaged 75% of the particulate protein-nitrogen. In constrast, <30% of protein-nitrogen was related to chlorophyll a during the summer. These results suggest that an oligotrophic structure based on the microbial-loop prevails in microplankton assemblages of surface waters for most of the year.  相似文献

Suspended particulate matter, zooplankton, and macrobenthos dynamics were investigated in a shallow area of the Ligurian Sea (north-west Mediterranean) characterized by wide temporal variability over an annual cycle. As indicated by multivariate analyses, the seasonal dynamics can be summarized as follows: (1) a late winter-early spring phytoplankton bloom followed by high zooplankton and macrobenthos densities during the spring months; (2) low-quality particulate suspended matter in summer, and an increase in the importance of zooplankton taxa with a wide range of feeding strategies, a decrease in macrofaunal abundance, and an increase in deposit-feeders and predators; and (3) a second phytoplankton bloom in autumn, followed by an increase in copepod density and a low macrofaunal abundance. In conclusion, pelagic and benthic communities in the coastal area of the Ligurian Sea mainly seem to be controlled bottom-up. Our results suggest that the quality of the particulate organic matter may play an important role in determining the temporal changes of both plankton and benthic assemblages, while the direct influence of other environmental features (such as sediment grain size) is relevant only for some macrobenthic taxa (e.g. crustaceans).  相似文献

Organic detritus of the Cochin Backwater (India) is largely composed of fine silt and sand particles around which organic matter adheres and forms aggregates. In addition to plankton, large quantities of benthic algae, rooted plants, animal matter, suspended soft mud and the material brought down by the rivers and land runoff constitute the main sources of detritus. Detritus sedimentation in the estuary attains its maximum from April to June. Detritus forms a major portion of seston, while phytoplankton productivity constitutes 0.1 to 1.0% of settled detritus. Detrital pigments include degraded chlorophyll (phaeophytin), which has a marked seasonal variation; detrital carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen show little change during the year. The caloric value of detritus, calculated from protein, carbohydrate and lipid fractions and also from total carbon, indicates that sedimented detritus does not have a high nutritional value. However, being a readily available material, its entry into the food chain seems to increase the efficiency of energy transfer from one trophic level to another.  相似文献

During the end of the phytoplankton spring bloom, about 100 water samples were taken at 23 stations in the Baltic Sea. The samples were analyzed for particulate Cu, Fe, Zn, Cd, and Pb by atomic absorption as well as for chlorophyll and seston. Further subsamples were counted with an inverted microscope, and phytoplankton carbon content was calculated. The hydrographical-biological state of the Baltic Sea during spring is described. Two different water masses could be differentiated and these were separated by the halocline. The concentrations of particulate metals are in accordance with those published by other authors. No significant differences could be calculated between mean values of particulate metal concentrations in the two water bodies. Correlations between particulate metal concentrations and chlorophyll, seston, phytoplankton carbon and cell-count were calculated for both photic layer and deeper waters. Significant correlations were found only in the photic layer. The importance of standing crop for metal accumulation in seston is discussed.  相似文献

The particulate organic matter distribution and its elemental composition in the northern and central Adriatic Sea during different seasonal periods are shown, highlighting the principal processes and factors influencing their distribution and characteristics. In the low salinity waters the concentrations of particulate carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus were higher and more variable than in the dense waters, mainly due to dilution effects which induce an abundant phytoplankton growth. Generally in summer the particulate organic matter distribution followed the trophic gradient while in winter resuspension events often became more important. Differences between summer and winter were more evident in the diluted waters and were mainly due to the seasonal heat exchanges and to the fresh water inputs. Marked differences in C/P ratios were observed in the POM: high ratios in the northern diluted waters and low in the more saline waters and in the central Adriatic.  相似文献

The seasonal pattern of sedimentation was determined over a 8-mo investigation period covering the productive season at a permanent station in the Southern Kattegat (Denmark) in 1990. The phytoplankton succession was characterised by a 4-mo long subsurface maximum associated with the pycnocline which was entirely dominated by the dinoflagellate Gyrodinium aureolum. The bulk sedimentation of organic matter took place during this period and accounted for >60% of the annual particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) sedimentation. The spring bloom period contributed 60% of the sedimentation of intact phytoplankton cells, but only 20% of the POC and PON sedimentation. A minor fraction of the sedimenting matter from the subsurface phytoplankton maximum consisted of intact phytoplankton (<20%), suggesting that the phytoplankton was processed by heterotrophs and that it was mainly products from this activity which contributed to thevertical flux of organic matter. The variation in oxygen concentration below the pycnocline coincided with the pattern of sedimentation with a delay of 3 to 6 wk.  相似文献

Suspended particulate organic matter in a Mediterranean submarine cave   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
R. Fichez 《Marine Biology》1991,108(1):167-174
Submarine caves display a paucity of benthic density and biomass that may be related to low trophic resources. Analysis of organic carbon, organic nitrogen, carbohydrate, protein and lipid content of suspended particulate matter was made during the period July 1985–July 1987 in a Mediterranean cave (Marseille, France) in order to determine any differences in the particulate organic matter composition along an horizontal transect. Particulate organic matter content clearly declined from the entrance of the cave to the dark inner area. This impoverishment could not be explained by a simple decrease in a few organic compounds, but appeared to be related to the combination of a decrease in both the amount and the composition of the suspended particles. Three progressive levels of impoverishment were identified towards the dark inner area of the cave: (i) decreasing amounts of seston; (ii) decreasing organic content of particles; (iii) increasing proportions of the geopolymeric (i.e., humic) components in the remaining organic matter, indicating increased degradation. The cave appeared to be sharply divided into two distinct sections — a twilight outer section whose waters contained slightly lower amounts of particulate organic matter than the open sea, and a dark inner section, 8 to 10 m higher, separated from the outer section by a steep rise and with waters of low organic matter content. The water in the twilight section appeared to be in thermal equilibrium with the open sea, and that in the dark inner section displayed thermal stratification. These differences indicated the presence of two distinct water bodies with contrasting average residence times, estimated as 1 d in the outer twilight section and 8 d in the dark inner section. The joint action of sedimentation and degradation resulted in an abrupt depletion of particulate organic matter in the dark inner section accompanied by a decrease in the benthic fauna. The decline in benthic heterotroph populations is probably related to the abrupt transition to oligotrophic conditions.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of the C/N ratios and variations in δ13C and δ15N of suspended particulate matter were used to characterise their source in Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, Chilika, India. In addition, the significance of re-mineralised nutrients in the primary productivity of the shallow lagoon was also determined through quantification of the subsurface nitrogen uptake conditions at two relatively stable locations in the lagoon. The results indicated that the influence of terrestrial organic matter was the maximum in the northern sector and was relatively limited at the central and southern part of the lagoon. In situ 15N uptake experiments (daytime) under biogeochemically stable conditions revealed that the N uptake by phytoplankton ranged between 0.24 and 1.01?mM?m?3?h?1 during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. New production and regenerated production in the shallow lagoon was also estimated by calculating f-ratios (ratio of nitrate assimilation by phytoplankton to total nitrogenous nutrient assimilation, have been estimated), which varied from 0.52 in the post-monsoon to 0.38 in the pre-monsoon. Lowering of the f-ratio from post- to pre-monsoon indicated a dominance of mineralisation over the new production.  相似文献

Zooplankton abundance and grazing on autotrophic and heterotrophic particulate matter were measured along a transect across Davis Reef (18°5S; 147°39E) and in the back-reef lagoon over tidal and diel cycles during austral winter (August 1984). Zooplankton entering the reef from the surrounding shelf waters decreased in abundance over the reef flat, presumably because of predation. Within the reef lagoon, maximum daytime densities of pelagic copepods occurred during high water, suggesting an external input. At night, water-column zooplankton biomass increased by a factor of 2 to 3 due to the emergence of demersal reef zooplankton. Zooplankton grazing rates on heterotrophic particulate matter (bacteria + detritus and Protozoa) compared to phytoplankton were higher on the reef flat than on the fore-reef or lagoon. Within the lagoon, zooplankton grazing rates on heterotrophic material were maximum during high water, coincident with maximum tidal concentrations of particulate organic carbon. The combined demersal and pelagic zooplankton community were often able to crop 30% of the daily primary production by >2µm phytoplankton. However, >50% of phytoplankton biomass was in cells <2µm, presumably unavailable to these zooplankton. Our particulate production and ingestion measurements, together with zooplankton carbon demand extrapolated from respiration estimates, suggest that the zooplankton community of Davies Reef derives much of its nutrition from detritus.Joint contribution from the University of Maryland, Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies (No. 2015), and the Microbial Ecology on a Coral Reef Workshop (MECOR No. 19)  相似文献

The Ria Formosa lagoon, Portugal, receives organic matter from many natural and anthropogenic sources. This paper presents an overview of the contribution these sources made through the use of lipid biomarkers. Sixty-one surface sediment samples were collected and analysed for a range of lipids. Sewage materials were confined to regions within 2 km of discharge points; phytoplankton biomarkers (sterols and fatty acids) suggest production was greatest in the inner parts of the lagoon that also have greatest inorganic nutrient enrichment; terrestrial organic matter was present in relatively low concentrations as shown by both sterol and fatty alcohols; bacteria were widespread although the Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRBs, shown by the presence of 3-OH fatty acids) were located near but not adjacent to sewage discharge points.  相似文献

A model based on empirical relationships is used to study frequency and magnitude of the sediment resuspension by wind-induced waves. The model has been developed for Laguna Galarza, a mesotrophic round-shaped shallow lake located in Esteros del Iberá wetland. Given the logistic and accessibility difficulties of this macrosystem, the installation of automated field stations facilitated continuous data acquisition. Using the wave theory, a daily spatial model of resuspension was built from simultaneous time series of hourly measurements of infrared nephelometric turbidity, wind speed and wind direction. The model was used to predict total suspended solids in another lake of the wetland (Laguna Iberá) showing a good agreement with observed field values, even although Laguna Iberá has a more irregular contour and a eutrophic state. Finally, we apply the model to discuss the ecological impacts of resuspension on the distribution of the littoral communities and to characterize the composition of the particulate suspended matter of the limnetic ecosystem. The model was useful to simulate the possible implications of the recent alterations of the wetland water level on the resuspension regime of the open water bodies.  相似文献
