Laboratory column experiments were performed to remove PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) from two contaminated soils using sunflower oil. Two liters of sunflower oil was added to the top of the columns (33 cm x 21 cm) packed with 1 kg of PAH-contaminated soil. The sunflower oil was applied sequentially in two different ways, i.e. five additions of 400 ml or two additions of 1l. The influence of PAH concentration and the volume of sunflower oil on PAH removal were examined. A soil respiration experiment was carried out and organic carbon contents of the soils were measured to determine degradability of remaining sunflower oil in the soils. Results showed that the sunflower oil was effective in removing PAHs from the two soils, more PAHs were removed by adding sunflower oil in two steps than in five steps, probably because of the slower flow rate in the former method. More than 90% of total PAHs was removed from a heavily contaminated soil (with a total 13 PAH concentration of 4721 mg kg(-1)) using 4 l of sunflower oil. A similar removal efficiency was obtained for another contaminated soil (with a total 13 PAH concentration of 724 mg kg(-1)), while only 2l was needed to give a similar efficiency. Approximately 4-5% of the sunflower oil remained in the soils. Soil respiration curves showed that remaining sunflower oil was degraded by allowing air exchange and supplying with nutrients. Organic carbon content of the soil was restored to original level after 180 d incubation. These results indicated that the sunflower oil had a great capacity to remove PAHs from contaminated soils, and sunflower oil solubilization can be an alternative technique for remediation of PAH contaminated soils.  相似文献

Microbial decontamination of hydrocarbon-polluted soil was paralleled with soil respiration measurements. About 1,500 tons of a loamy top soil were found to be contaminated with approximately 2000 mg/kg of aliphatic hydrocarbons, mainly oleic (C18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2) found in the vicinity of a linoleum manufacturing and then a car dewaxing plant. The contaminated soil was analysed for dry matter, pH, dehydrogenase activity, electrical conductivity and nutrient content viz. nitrate, phosphorus and potassium, as well as a number of indigenous microbes. The soil was low in salt and nutrients. This paper describes the procedure and measures to decontaminate this bulk soil on site from approx. 2,000 to 500 mg of aliphatic hydrocarbons/kg dry matter by use of a nutrient emulsion, indigenous micro-organisms and aeration over 13 months. This 75% reduction in aliphatic hydrocarbons resulted in a concomitant carbon efflux, measured as soil respiration, and was used to calculate carbon fluxes.  相似文献

An in situ test method to measure the aerobic biodegradation rates of hydrocarbons in contaminated soil is presented. The test method provides an initial assessment of bioventing as a remediation technology for hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The in situ respiration test consists of ventilating the contaminated soil of the unsatiirated zone with air and periodically monitoring the depletion of oxygen (O2) and production of carbon dioxide (CO2) over time after the air is turned off. The test is simple to implement and generally takes about four to five days to complete. The test was applied at eight hydrocarbon-contaminated sites of different geological and climatic conditions. These sites were contaminated with petroleum products or petroleum fuels, except for two sites where the contaminants were primarily polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Oxygen utilization rates for the eight sites ranged from 0.02 to 0.99 percent O2/hour. Estimated biodegradation rates ranged from 0.4 to 19 mg/kg of soil/day. These rates were similar to the biodegradation rates obtained from field and pilot studies using mass balance methods. Estimated biodegradation rates based on O2 utilization were generally more reliable (especially for alkaline soils) than rates based on CO2 production. CO2 produced from microbial respiration was probably converted to carbonate under alkaline conditions.  相似文献

Soil respiration measurements are an established method to test the abundance, activity and vitality of the soil microorganisms. However, abnormal progressions of soil respiration curves impede a clear interpretation of the data. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the microbial structure during the formation of phenomena like double peaks and terraces by analysis of the PLFA composition (phospholipid fatty acid composition). Moreover, 13C labeled glucose was used as substrate; therefore it was possible to measure δ13C values both within the PLFA fraction as well as within the carbon dioxide evolved during respiration. As contaminants trinitrotoluene, cycloheximide, and hexadecane were used. The results showed that the appearance of double peaks was mainly related to the growth of fungi with the marker 18:2δ9,12 due to a toxic effect of trinitrotoluene and cycloheximide. In contrast, the phenomenon of terrace formation was related to the utilization of hexadecane as a carbon source mainly by bacteria.  相似文献

Before wood ash can be used as a soil fertilizer, concentrations of environmentally hazardous compounds must be investigated. In this study, total and leachable concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in four ash samples and one green liquor sludge. The ash sample with the highest carbon content also contained high levels of PAHs; three of the ash samples had total concentrations exceeding the limit permitted by the Swedish Forest Agency for recycling to forest soils. The leachable concentrations were higher for the non-stabilized samples; this was probably due to colloid-facilitated transport of the contaminants in these samples. However, the leachable concentrations were overall relatively low in all the samples studied. The amounts of PAHs introduced to forest soils by additions of stabilized, recyclable ash products will be determined primarily by the rate of weathering of the ash particles and the total concentration of contaminants.  相似文献

The photochemical formation of singlet oxygen in some Dutch surface waters has been investigated using the method developed by Zepp (1). However, when monitoring the consumption of oxygen beside that of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), the compound added to chemically snare singlet oxygen, it was found that appreciable, but varying parts of DMF were used up by secondary reactions leading largely to the same products, viz. cis- and trans-diacetylethylene. When taking the oxygen consumption as a measure for the singlet oxygen production on the basis of the stoichiometry of the primary reaction, a fair correlation between the singlet oxygen production and the total organic carbon (TOC) content was found for this selection of Dutch surface water samples. The steady-state concentrations of singlet oxygen determined in this way were about one order of magnitude lower than those found by Zepp (1) and by Zafiriou (2).  相似文献

This study evaluated the feasibility of supplementing groundwater monitoring protocols by assessing the vadose zone for the extent of residual subsurface contamination. The study also characterized the response of the soil gas signatures with respect to different soil types and degrees of contamination. A field study was conducted at a former gasoline vending station located in Ottawa, Canada. The current state of contamination was determined by analysis of soil samples taken from boreholes. A series of 10 nested soil gas wells with monitoring depths of 0.75, 1.5, 2.25 and 3.0 m were then installed. Using these wells, soil gas surveys were performed at regular intervals over an extended period to quantify Gaseous TPH (TPH g ), oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations in the soil gas. Results indicate that soil gas wells located near the source term exhibited characteristic soil gas signatures and significant fluctuations in TPH g , oxygen, and carbon dioxide concentrations with time. Soil gas wells located beyond the soil contamination demonstrated limited correlation between TPH g , oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations and decreased seasonal variability.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the main classes of contaminants in the terrestrial environment. Concentrations of biphenyl, fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene were added to soil samples in order to investigate the anaerobic degradation potential of PAHs under denitrifying conditions. A mixed population of microorganisms obtained from a paddy soil was incubated for 20 days in anaerobic conditions in the presence of soil alone or with nitrate, adding, as electron donors, PAHs and, in some samples, glucose or acetate. At regular time intervals oxidation-reduction potential, PAHs concentration, microbial ATP and nitrate concentration into the solution were measured. Degradation trends for each hydrocarbon are similar under all conditions, indicating that the molecular conformation prevails over other parameters in controlling the degradation. Poor degradation results were obtained when PAHs were the only organic matter available for the inoculum, thus confirming the recalcitrance to degradation of these compounds. Biodegradation was influenced by the addition of other carbon sources. As better degradation results were generally obtained when acetate or glucose were added, the hypothesis of a co-metabolic enhancement of PAH biodegradation seems likely. Thus, anaerobic biodegradation of PAHs studied, biphenyl, fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene, seems to be possible both through fermentative and respiratory metabolism, provided that low molecular weight co-metabolites and suitable electron acceptors (nitrate) are present.  相似文献

A microcosm study was conducted to address the influences of air-soil partition and sequestration on the fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil. Sterilized and unsterilized soils with soil organic carbon (SOC) content ranging from 0.23 to 7.06% were incubated in a chamber with six PAHs supplied through air. After 100 d of incubation when the system approached pseudo-steady state, the PAHs concentrations in the unsterilized soils still correlated with SOC significantly, while the association did not exist for those sterilized. The lower degradation rate in the soil with higher SOC was likely the major reason for the association between SOC and PAHs concentrations, while the decreased surface porosity likely suppressed such correlation for the sterilized samples. The results indicated that the sequestration was likely the major mechanism for the accumulation of PAHs in soils, while both of the soil porosity and PAHs properties had observed influences.  相似文献

The occurrence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in vegetable soils from five vegetable fields (including: Liuhe, Xixia, Pukou, Jianye and Yuhua districts) in Nanjing outskirt were investigated with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with fluorescence detector. The total concentrations of 15 priority PAHs in 126 soil samples ranged from 21.91 to 533.84ngg(-1) dry weight, and the sum of seven carcinogenic PAHs concentrations varied from 1.48 to 236.19ngg(-1) dry weight. Statistical analysis of the PAHs concentrations showed that the highest PAHs concentration was observed in Liuhe, and the lowest PAHs concentrations were found in Xixia among the five districts. The ratios of fluoranthene to sum of fluoranthene and pyrene concentrations (Flt/(Flt+Pyr)) were more than 0.5 in 99% of vegetable soil samples, showing that the PAHs in soils were generally derived from straw and coal combustion sources. The results from principal component analysis (PCA) further indicated that extensive combustion activities affected the PAHs distribution in Nanjing vegetable soils.  相似文献

The rate and extent of biodegradation of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in ground-water was studied in samples from a contaminated site which contained total BTEX concentrations of up to 20 000 microg litre(-1). All compounds were rapidly degraded under natural aerobic conditions. Elevation of incubation temperature, supply of organic nutrients or addition of inorganic fertiliser did not increase the rate or extent of biodegradation and it appeared that oxygen supply was the factor limiting BTEX degradation at this site. Attempts to increase the dissolved oxygen concentration in the ground-water by the addition of hydrogen peroxide to give a final concentration of 200 mg litre(-1) resulted in the complete inhibition of biodegradation. No biodegradation occurred under anaerobic conditions except when nitrate was provided as a terminal electron acceptor for microbial respiration. Under denitrifying conditions there was apparent biodegradation of benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, m-xylene and p-xylene but o-xylene was not degraded. Degradation under denitrifying conditions occurred at a much slower rate than under oxygenated conditions.  相似文献

The removal of hydrogen sulfide by oxidation-adsorption on two type carbon fibers, Actitex FC1201 and RS1301, was studied. Two kinetic steps where identified. During the first step, the degradation appears to be limited by the oxidation reaction. In the second kinetic step, the by-products inhibit the hydrogen sulfide degradation. This leads to a limitation in the carbon site's accessibility and to a lower kinetic. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was used to correlate the experimental results and to estimate the kinetic (k) and the Langmuir adsorption (K) constants. For FC1201 fibers, the kinetic constant (k) is five time higher and the adsorption constant is five time lower compared to the RS1301 fibers. The role of the humidity was found to be highly beneficial for the removal of hydrogen sulfide. Especially in the second kinetic step, where it removes the by-product formed and therefore delays the occurrence of this low kinetic step. The kinetic constant (k) is strongly influenced by humidity while the Langmuir adsorption constant (K) seems independent. The effect of the nature of the gas phase on the reaction kinetic was also studied. Under a dry atmosphere, we note that the oxidation-reaction occurs even if the gaseous oxygen is not present. This oxidation is due to the oxygen surface function of the carbon fibers. Moreover, the degradation kinetic is faster under a dry nitrogen atmosphere. The presence of water traces leads to the acidification of the carbon surface, under oxygen or carbon dioxide atmospheres, and hence limits the hydrogen sulfide dissociation. In a humid atmosphere, the oxygen or carbon dioxide leads to a faster reaction kinetic. The acidification of the carbon surface is largely counterbalanced by the dissolution of the by-products.  相似文献

Identifying zones of sulphide oxidation and carbonate buffering is important in the development of a management plan for mine waste-rock piles. In this study, we used a kinetic cell technique to measure rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production in low sulphide (<0.12 wt.% S), low inorganic carbon (<0.20 wt.% C(inorganic)), gneissic waste rock and associated organic-rich lake sediment (0.7 wt.% C(organic)), and forest soil (1.4 wt.% C(organic)) collected from the Key Lake uranium mine in Saskatchewan, Canada. Solid chemistry, stable carbon isotope, pore water sulphate concentration data, and stoichiometric considerations indicated that O2 consumption and CO2 production were constrained by microbial respiration in the lake sediment and forest soil and by pyrite oxidation-carbonate buffering in the gneissic waste rock. Mean ratios of molar CO2 production to O2 consumption rates were 0.5 for lake sediment, 0.7 for forest soil, and 0.2 for gneissic waste rock. The different O2/CO2 ratios suggested that O2-CO2 monitoring may provide a practical tool for identifying the zones of microbial respiration and pyrite oxidation-carbonate buffering in mine waste-rock piles. Rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production were about one order of magnitude greater in lake sediment than in gneissic waste rock, indicating that microbial respiration would exert a control on the distribution of O2 and CO2 gas in waste-rock piles constructed upon the dewatered lake sediments.  相似文献

Based on the Zahn-Wellens test (OECD 302 B, 1992; DIN EN ISO 9888, 1999), a test system has been developed which enables a continuous and parallel determination of oxygen consumption (pressure measurement) and carbon dioxide production (conductivity measurement). It is a closed test system consisting of a culture flask, a carbon dioxide absorption flask, a pump as well as integrated measuring and control instruments. The air circulating within the test system causes the carbon dioxide present in the test solution to be stripped out completely and directly absorbed by the absorption solution. Avoiding costly thermostatting of the test apparatus, the results of the pressure measurements were temperature-corrected arithmetically. The functional reliability of the measuring apparatus has been demonstrated exemplary in degradation experiments with selected test substances. This new test system also facilitates to test poorly soluble, adsorbing and volatile substances for inherent biodegradability and constitutes an appropriate complement to the standardised Zahn-Wellens test. The Federal Environmental Agency will use it as input to international standardisation activities ongoing within the OECD, as a draft standard.  相似文献

The influence of petroleum contamination on soil microbial activities was investigated in 13 soil samples from sites around an injection water well (Iw-1, 2, 3, 4) (total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH): 7.5-78 mg kg−1), an oil production well (Op-1, 2, 3, 4, 5) (TPH: 149-1110 mg kg−1), and an oil spill accident well (Os-1, 2, 3, 4) (TPH: 4500-34 600 mg kg−1). The growth rate constant (μ) of glucose stimulated organisms, determined by microcalorimetry, was higher in Iw soil samples than in Op and Os samples. Total cultivable bacteria and fungi and urease activity also decreased with increasing concentration of TPH. Total heat produced demonstrated that TPH at concentrations less than about 1 g kg−1 soil stimulated anaerobic respiration. A positive correlation between TPH and soil organic matter (OM) and stimulation of fungi-bacteria-urease at low TPH doses suggested that TPH is bound to soil OM and slowly metabolized in Iw soils during OM consumption. These methods can be used to evaluate the potential of polluted soils to carry out self-bioremediation by metabolizing TPH.  相似文献

The use of the Fenton's reagent process has been investigated for the remediation of environmental matrices contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Laboratory experiments were first conducted in aqueous solutions, to study the kinetics of oxidation and adsorption of PAHs. Benzo[a]pyrene was more rapidly degraded than adsorbed, while only partial oxidation of fluoranthene occurred. In the case of benzo[b]fluoranthene, its adsorption prevented its oxidation. Besides competition effects between PAHs were found, with slower oxidation of mixtures as compared to single PAH solutions. Apparition of some by-products was observed, and a di-hydroxylated derivative of benzo[a]pyrene could be identified under our conditions. Consequently, application to solid environmental matrices (soil, sludge and sediment samples) was performed using large amounts of reagents. The efficiency of the Fenton treatment was dependent on the matrix characteristics (such as its organic carbon content) and the PAH availability (correlated to the date and level of contamination). However, no pH adjustment was required, as well as no iron addition due to the presence of iron oxides in the solid matrices, suggesting the potential application of Fenton-like treatment for the remediation of PAH-contaminated environmental solids.  相似文献

The levels and distribution of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in soil samples from background locations in the UK and Norway, to investigate their spatial distribution and the controlling environmental factors. Concentrations ranged between 42 and 11200 microg kg(-1) (geometric mean 640 microg kg(-1)) and 8.6 and 1050 microg kg(-1) (150 microg kg(-1)) dry weight in the UK and Norwegian soil, respectively. Proximity to sources and locations susceptible to high atmospheric depositional inputs resulted in higher concentrations. Statistically significant relationships were observed between PAH and total organic carbon (TOC) in the Norwegian samples. High molecular weight PAHs correlated with black carbon (BC) in UK-woodland soil. These observations support the hypothesis that TOC plays an important role in the retention of PAHs in soil and that PAHs are often combined with BC during combustion emissions. PAHs with 4 and more rings comprised approximately 90% of total PAHs in the UK soil, but only 50% in the Norwegian soil. The mixture of PAHs implied that fractionation occurred during long-range atmospheric transport and deposition. The lighter PAHs with lower K(ow) values more readily reached the most remote sites. The heavier PAHs with higher K(ow) values remained in closer proximity to sources.  相似文献

We investigated contents, distribution and possible sources of PAHs and organochlorine pesticides (Ops) in 43 surface and subsurface soils around the urban Guangzhou where variable kinds of vegetables are grown. The results indicate that the contents of PAHs (16 US EPA priority PAHs) range from 42 to 3077 microg/kg and the pollution extent is classified as a moderate level in comparison with other investigations and soil quality standards. The ratios of methylphenanthrenes to phenanthrene(MP/P), anthracene to anthracene plus phenanthrene (An/178), benz[a]anthracene to benz[a]anthracene plus chrysene (BaA/228), indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene to indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene plus benzo[ghi]perylene (In/In+BP) suggest that the sources of PAHs in the soil samples are mixed with a dominant contribution from petroleum and combustion of fossil fuel. The correlation analysis shows that the PAHs contents are significantly related to total organic carbon contents (TOC) (R2=0.75) and black carbon contents (BC) (R2=0.62) in the soil samples. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and metabolites (DDTs) and hexachlorocyclohexanes and metabolites (HCHs) account largely for the contaminants of OPs. The concentrations of DDTs range from 3.58 to 831 microg/kg and the ratios for DDT/(DDD+DDE) are higher than 2 in some soil samples, suggesting that DDT contamination still exists and may be caused by its persistence in soils and/or impurity in the pesticide dicofol. The concentrations of HCHs are 0.19-42.3 microg/kg.  相似文献
