Summary This study investigates the possibility that gene flow underlies the apparently maladaptive behavior of a riparian woodland population of the desert spider Agelenopsis aperta with respect to territorial, foraging, and antipredatory behaviors. I found that other local populations of A. aperta in the vicinity of the riparian woodland habitat are prey-limited and exhibit an aridlands phenotype (high aggressiveness in competitive interactions over energy-based territories and a lack of discrimination among potential prey types). The riparian woodland population deviates from surrounding populations in the area in that prey are abundant and this population shows a mixture of aridlands and riparian (low aggressiveness towards conspecifics and discrimination of prey profitability) phenotypes. Electrophoretic analyses of population subdivision in the area indicate that significant levels of gene flow have occurred, at least, sometime in the past. Drift fence analyses of spider movement futher indicate that there is marked unidirectional movement of spiders each year from the more arid habitats into the riparian woodland. Experimental manipulation of gene flow and predation pressure demonstrates that gene flow restricts adaptation in this habitat: one generation of predation pressure in the absence of gene flow is sufficient to cause a marked shift in spider behavior towards the expected riparian phenotype.  相似文献

For comparing different populations the index specific production (the production rate of the unit of the biomass) is used. The correlation between specific production and age-structure for some populations is described. We assessed experimentally how the quality and quantity of social information affected foraging decisions of starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) at different neighbour distances, and how individuals gained social information as a function of head position. Our experimental set up comprised three bottomless enclosures, each housing one individual placed on a line at different distances. The birds in the extreme enclosures were labelled senders and the one in the centre receiver. We manipulated the foraging opportunities of senders (enhanced, natural, no-foraging), and recorded the behaviour of the receiver. In the first experiment, receivers responded to the condition of senders. Their searching rate and food intake increased when senders foraged in enhanced conditions, and decreased in no-foraging conditions, in relation to natural conditions. Scanning was oriented more in the direction of conspecifics when senders behaviour departed from normal. In the second experiment, responses were dose dependent: receivers increased their searching rate and orientated their gaze more towards conspecifics with the number of senders foraging in enhanced food conditions. In no-foraging conditions, receivers decreased their searching and intake rates with the number of senders, but no variation was found in scanning towards conspecifics. Differences in foraging and scanning behaviour between enhanced and no-foraging conditions were much lower when neighbours were separated farther. Overall, information transfer within starling flocks affects individual foraging and scanning behaviour, with receivers monitoring and copying senders behaviour mainly when neighbours are close. Information transfer may be related to predation information (responding to the vigilance of conspecifics) and foraging information (responding to the feeding success of conspecifics). Both sources of information, balanced by neighbour distance, may simultaneously affect the behaviour of individuals in natural conditions.Communicated by H. Kokko  相似文献

Photosynthesis, chlorophyll, inorganic nutrients, and related factors were measured throughout a productive season in a small coastal inlet of the Arctic Ocean. Significant production was confined to 5 m for a very limited time period beacause of both light and nutrient limitations. Maximum chlorophyll was 8.2 mg Chl a m-3 and maximum gross and net photosynthesis rates were 830 and 550 mg C m-2 d-1. Annual gross and net photosynthesis is estimated at about 12 and 9 g C m-2 respectively. The effect of light stimulation on assimilation is described, sources of coastal zone nutrient enrichment are considered, and discrepancies between gross and net photosynthesis are discussed with reference to the growth characteristics of the phytoplankton population.Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Energy budgets were determined for small pieces (nubbins) of the coralsPocillopora damicornis, Montipora verrucosa andPorites lobata living at a water depth of 3 m on the fringing reef of Coconut Island, Kaneohe, Hawaii. The budgets were determined for three different types of day: an ideal day with no cloud and an in situ daily integrated irradiance at 3 m of 14.385 E m–2 d–1; a normal day with sporadic cloud cover and daily irradiance of 11.915 E m–2 d–1; and an overcast day with daily irradiance of 6.128 E m–2 d–1. On the ideal day, the energy fixed in photosynthesis was more than that required for respiration and growth of both zooxanthellae and animal components of the association, and there was a predicted loss of between 19.3 and 32.4% of the energy fixed. On a normal day, the total photosynthetic energy fixation was lower and the excess was between 12.1 and 27.9% of the energy fixed. On the overcast day, however, in bothPocillopora damicornis andPorites lobata energy expenditure exceeded photosynthetic energy fixation and the budget was in deficit. Estimates of rate of mucus secretion on an overcast day were derived and, when incorporated into the energy budget, it was predicted that all three species would have a deficit budget, necessitating the catabolism of lipid reserves. From published values for lipid storage in these species it was calculated that the reserves would last from 28 d inPocillopora damicornis to 114 d inM. verrucosa. A model is suggested in which corals draw upon their extensive lipid stores on days of sub-optimal light, replenishing the reserves again when daily light levels are high, and finally excreting the excess energy fixed, as mucus-lipid when the lipid stores are replete.  相似文献

Deep-water royal red prawns (Haliporoides sibogae de Man, 1907; Solenoceridae: Penaeidea) were sampled from commercial catches off south-east Australia between November 1988 and May 1990. Four stages of sexual development were distinguished macroscopically for each sex. For the females, histology and analysis of oocyte size were used to validate the macroscopic staging of ovaries into undeveloped, developing, early ripe and ripe. Females were larger than males, reaching a maximum size of 46 mm carapace length (CL) compared to 32 mm CL for males. Average size at sexual maturity was 30.8 mm CL for females and 25.8 mm CL for males. Females apparently breed several times in their life, whereas males probably breed only once. Individual fecundity (ranging from about 58 000 to 140 000 oocytes) was relatively low compared with other penaeids, but oocytes were larger (mean diameter=0.41 mm). Two short breeding seasons occurred per year (February to April and July to August). There was a clear size-related latitudinal distribution of the prawns, with largr prawns (spawners) being more abundant in the northern region of the fishing area, and juveniles (CL20 mm) being more abundant in the south. Most of the spawning stock probably lies outside the main fishing ground, while the fishery targets mainly prawns below the size at maturity.  相似文献

Surface soils (0–15 cm) were sampled at 10–20 km intervals along two transects in Venezuela. One (1162 km, 70 samples) ran west to east parallel with the Caribbean coastline, the other (920 km, 92 samples) ran south to north from the frontier with Brazil to the Caribbean shore. Sampling took place in both a wet and a dry season. Trace metals were extracted from dried, sieved (<2 mm) soil with boiling aqua regia followed by analysis by ICP or flame AAS. Metal values did not differ significantly between the two seasons and dates were averaged. Geometric mean values for the west–east transect were: Cr=41.5, Cu 17.9, Cs 3.6, Li=13.9, Mn=294, Ni=21.3, Pb=17.4, Sr=39.4, V=60.4 and Zn = 83.7g g–1, respectively. Similarly, for the south–north transect Cr=21.3, Cu=4.3, Cs=1.1, Li=2.0, Mn=55.7, Ni=4.4, Pb=6.1, Sr=13.3, V=28.2 and Zn=16.7g g–1, respectively. A classification of samples by lithology showed surface soil composition to be related to rock composition. Metal values were low in the soils in the south of the country, in the Guyana highlands (Gran Sabana). Low Zn contents were prevalent. Lead contents were affected by roadside fallout from vehicles using leaded petrol except that high Pb contents of soils in the Gran Sabana were of more complex origin.  相似文献

Summary Limitations on male capacity may be important to the evolution of mating strategies and behavior. Sperm counts in successive ejaculates of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) decreased progressively through six ejaculations and remained depressed the following day. Males were as effective in inseminating females in cycling estrus with their second two ejaculates as with their first two and as effective in inseminating postpartum females with their fifth as with their first. In sperm competition situations males competed with rested males as effectively with their fourth, fifth, and sixth ejaculates as with their first. Thus, although sperm counts decrease in successive ejaculates, males suffer no apparent functional deficiency as long as they continue ejaculating. It is not clear whether or not deer mice are honest salesmen but they appear to be honest ejaculators and usually are honest intromitters.  相似文献

Summary We describe an experiment designed to investigate the trade-off between foraging and territorial vigilance in the Great Tit. Captive territorial male Great Tits were observed while foraging in a large indoor aviary. They obtained food from two operant patches in which the supply of food was gradually depleted during a visit. We predicted that during control sessions the birds would switch between patches in such a way as to maximise their overall feeding rate. In experimental sessions, we introduced briefly a rival male as an intruder at the start of the test. The foraging male could see the rival only when travelling between patches and not while feeding within patches. We predicted that during experimental sessions birds would switch between patches more often than in control tests, sacrificing food intake for territorial vigilance. Three of the four males tested behaved in approximately the predicted manner. We discuss the use of an inverse optimality argument to provide a calibration of feeding against the benefit resulting from territorial vigilance.  相似文献

In order to assess the intake of lead and cadmium by consumers of home grown vegetables in urban areas, replicated experimental plots of uniform size, comprising summer and winter crops, were established in 94 gardens and allotments in nine towns and cities in England.The geometric mean lead and cadmium concentrations for the soils (n = 94) were 217 g g–1 (ranging from 27 to 1,676 g g–1) and 0.53 g g–1 (<0.2–5.9 g g–1), respectively. Compared with agricultural soils, the garden and allotment soils contained elevated levels of lead but not cadmium.Lead concentrations in the vegetables ranged from <0.25 g g–1 to 16.7 g g–1 dry weight and cadmium concentrations ranged from <0.025 g g–1 to 10.4 g g–1 dry weight. Lead concentrations were higher than reported background levels, although <1% exceeded the statutory limit for saleable food in the UK (1 g g–1 fresh weight). Cadmium concentrations were generally similar to background levels.  相似文献

Summary O'Connor (1978) generated behavioral predictions from Trivers's (1974) theory of parent-offspring conflict (POC) in relation to avian brood reduction, especially for species using escalated sibling aggression. In general, when daily mortality rates fall between certain values (the mortality difference thresholds for parents and surviving offspring: O'Connor 1978), POC is expected. At such times parents and the early-hatching senior offspring are expected to disagree on the necessity, or at least timing, of the victim chick's death. Because that death is promoted directly by the senior chicks and because parents have realistic means of nullifying those efforts, behavioral conflict is expected. I examined the activities of all family members in one siblicidal (great egrets, Casmerodius albus) and one nonsiblicidal brood-reducing species (great blue herons, Ardea herodias) of ardeidae in Texas nesting colonies. Daily mortality rates over two breeding seasons approximated the predicted POC zone for four-chick (B/4) heron broods and three-chick (B/3) egret broods. As predicted, egret sibling aggression was significantly lower in two-chick broods. Herons seldom fought, regardless of brood size. Special attention was paid to the egret B/3 data for behavioral manifestations of POC. Parents did not interfere overtly with sibling fights (99.2% of 2,829), but parents seemed to have a subtle mollifying effect on the aggression (fewer sever fights occurred when parents were present). Parents showed no favoritism in food distribution to dying victim chicks. The mixed results are consistent with two rather different POC interpretations: (1) that significant conflict exists and the offspring are winning or (2) that there is no significant evolutionary conflict. In the latter case, parents are regarded as creating asymmetries among offspring (e.g., via hatch asynchrony), then leaving competition among siblings to run its course without further intervention (laissezfaire policy). This view explicitly recognizes that siblicide and other investment-skewing selfish chick behaviors may serve parental interests well-i.e., that equal allocation of resources is not likely to be the parental optimum. Using the relative reproductive values of each nestling as an index of the parent's unequal parental investment optimum produces a closer fit to the observed food distribution skew, but does not resolve the question of whether conflict remains.  相似文献

Balanus balanoides (L.) collected from an area with high heavy-metal run-off contained two different types of granule within the parenchyma cells of the prosoma. X-ray microprobe analysis shows one to be the familiar zinc granule made up of concentric layers and giving major peaks for phosphorus and zinc, and the other to be homogeneous and giving peaks for sulphur and copper. This latter granule is designated the copper granule. Whilst zinc granules are known to be composed of inorganic phosphate, various tests on copper granules in sections and in a granule-rich pellet have shown that the copper is probably complexed with organic matter. The tests also demonstrated the relatively, insoluble (inert) nature of these granules. Although zinc and copper granules were present together in the prosoma, atomic absorption analyses of whole bodies (prosoma+thorax) have shown the level of zinc (50.28 g/mg dry weight) to be much higher than that of copper (3.75 g/mg dry weight).  相似文献

Summary A North American water strider, Gerris remigis (Hemiptera) copulates for prolonged periods of time, apparently beyond the time necessary for insemination (Rubenstein 1984; Wilcox 1984; Clark 1987), I tested predictions from two different hypotheses of the adaptive significance of this behavior. Manipulations of the operational sex ratio in artificial streams revealed that water striders copulate significantly longer when the sex ratio is male-biased. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that prolonged copulation functions as a type of contact mate guarding, which reduces sperm competition by preventing the female from remating prior to oviposition. The finding is also consistent with the hypothesis that copulation is prolonged to enhance female foraging efficiency. In a second experiment, sex ratio and total population density were held constant, and the period of food deprivation of females was manipulated. Contrary to the predictions of the female foraging hypothesis, starved females did not copulate longer than fed females. Of the two hypotheses considered, only the copulatory guarding hypothesis explains both results. This does not mean, however, that there is no selective benefit from the enhanced foraging efficiency resulting from prolonged copulation. Nor does it exclude the possibility that this benefit has been necessary for the evolution of prolonged copulation in water striders.  相似文献

Abstract In a foraging column of the leaf-cutting ant Atta cephalotes, minim workers (the smallest worker subcaste) hitchhike on leaf fragments carried by larger workers. It has been demonstrated that they defend leaf carriers against parasitic phorid flies. The present study examines the cues used by the potential hitchhikers to locate leaf carriers. As recently reported, foraging workers stridulate while cutting a leaf fragment, and the stridulatory vibrations serve as closerange recruitment signals. We tested the hypothesis that these plant-borne stridulatory vibrations are used by the potential hitchhikers to locate workers engaged in cutting. Three different lines of evidence support this view. Firstly, the repetition rate of the stridulations produced by foraging workers increases significantly as foragers maneuver the leaf fragment into the carrying position and walk loaded to the nest. This is the moment when hitchhikers usually climb on the leaf. Although the leaf-borne stridulatory vibrations are considerably attenuated when transmitted through the workers' legs, they can nevertheless be detected at short distances by minims. This subcaste is several times more sensitive to substrate-borne vibrations than larger workers. Secondly, when a stridulating and a silent leaf were simultaneously presented at the foraging site, minim workers spent significantly more time on the stridulating than on the silent leaf. Water uptake, branchial water circulation and various water-related behaviours and anatomical specialisations, are described for the Australian semaphore crabHeloecius cordiformis (H. Milne-Edwards 1837). Male and female semaphore crabs were observed and collected from mangrove swamps around the south side of Botany Bay, Australia between 1983 and 1987. Semaphore crabs are active at low tide in air. Their branchial chambers are modified for both air breathing and water circulation. Water is held within the branchial chambers and is used for feeding and, to a certain extent, respiration. Crabs carry between 0.35 and 0.5 ml of water (7 g live body wt). Branchial water is continuously pumped out by the scaphognathites over specialised setae-bearing regions of the carapace and back through the branchial chambers over the gills, in a manner similar to that found in many grapsid crabs. Setae associated with water circulation are described. Water falling ventrally is collected by the abdominosternal cavity (formed between the abdomen and sternum) from where it returns to the branchial chambers via branchiosternal canals. Several novel water-related behaviours are described: Water shoogling — branchial water is drawn out between the walking legs where it is worked by scissor-like up and down movements of the legs. Abdomen flap — branchial water volume is adjusted by the extension and flexion of the abdomen against the cephalothorax. Water dumping — by tilting forwards and kissing the substrate, branchial water is voided to allow an entirely fresh load to be taken up. Statuesque posing — crabs remain erect and motionless for long periods. Branchial water is absent and external body surfaces dry out. Posing behaviour may function in thermoregulation, osmoregulation or as an anti-fouling mechanism against settling organisms. The significance of these various behaviours is discussed.  相似文献

Summary We measured the distance dialects in the dance languages of three honey bee species in Thailand (Apis florea, A. cerana, and A. dorsata), and used these dialects to examine the hypothesis that a colony's dialect is adaptively tuned to enhance efficiency of communication over the distances that its foragers typically fly. in contrast to previous interspecific comparisons in Sri Lanka (Lindauer 1956; Punchihewa et al. 1985), we found no striking dialect differences among the Asian bees in Thailand. The adaptive tuning hypothesis predicts that the foraging ranges of the three species should also be similar, but comparisons of colonial foraging range using the forage mapping technique (Visscher and Seeley 1982) actually revealed marked differences. Brown and cherry colour morphs of the heteronemertean Lineus torquatus Coe, 1901 from the Vostok Bay of the Sea of Japan were compared using allele frequencies at 18 isozyme loci. These morphs shared no common alleles at 9 of the 18 loci. The observed genetic differences are strong evidence that the brown and cherry colour morphs, which occur sympatrically, are different species. Nei's genetic distance between these species (D=1.135) is considerably higher than typical D values for congeneric animal species. As with much previous work on nemerteans, intraspecific allozymic variability in both species was high, with mean expected heterozygosity values 0.286±0.049 and 0.159±0.051 for L. torquatus (brown) and L. torquatus (cherry) species, respectively.  相似文献

The method consists of the comparison of the empirical frequency curve of a population, obtained using the Method of Quadrats, with a simulated one, since the pattern of the simulated curve depends on the simulated distribution. Major variations in lipid composition exist within the fatty melon tissue of the Atlantic bottlenosed dolphin Tursiops truncatus. Topographical lipid analyses indicate a central inner melon core surrounded by distinctive outer melon, under melon, and blubber tissues. Acoustical considerations suggest that this melon-lipid topography may aid in collimation of the ultrasonic pulses used by the dolphin for echolocation.  相似文献

Summary The behaviour of a small male passerine bird over a typical winter day is studied by a dynamic programming model. The bird can be either unpaired or paired; an unpaired bird can forage in a flock, forage alone or sing to attract a mate. Foraging increases his reserves, while singing reduces them. The optimal policy and the expected behaviour of birds depend both on time and reserves. The model predicts that birds will flock, especially in the morning, if flocking birds find more food (foraging efficiency), and also more flocking can be expected when the predation risk is lower in a flock (antipredator benefit). Where flocking gives lower variance in food intake, with the same mean (reduced variance benefit), birds with low reserves at the end of the day choose to forage alone (high variance option), while otherwise they are risk-averse and forage in a flock. The cost of flocking increases with time in a day and with the probability of mate attraction through singing. Decisions inevitably involve trade-offs. Where flocking results in antipredator benefit, but also lower foraging gain, birds with low reserves forage alone, but birds with high reserves flock. Offprint requests to: A.I. Houston  相似文献
