Continuing growth of biofuel industries is generating large amounts of coproducts such as distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) from ethanol production and glycerol from biodiesel. Currently these coproducts are undervalued, but they have application in the plastics industry as property modifiers. This research effort has quantified the effects on mechanical properties of adding DDGS and glycerol to a commercial thermoplastic starch (TPS). The methodology was to physically mix DDGS, as filler, with the TPS pellets and injection mold the blends into test bars using glycerol as a processing aid. The bars were then mechanically tested with blends from 0 to 65 %, by weight, of plasticized filler. The test bars were typically relatively brittle with little yielding prior to fracture with elongation between 1 and 3 %. The addition of glycerol enabled molding of blends with high levels of DDGS but did not increase strength. Any presence of filler decreased the tensile strength of the starch, and up to 30 % filler, the tensile strength drops about 15 %. The 20 and 50 % blends (without glycerol) have slightly greater stiffness than pure starch. With some other blends, the presence of plasticized filler degrades the tensile modulus with 35 % filler yielding about 1/3 the stiffness. Changes in the flexural modulus are much more pronounced as 20–25 % filled TPS has a 30 % increase in flexural stiffness. In terms of surface hardness, blends up to 60 % filler are within 20 % of the TPS baseline.  相似文献

Biobased polyols were synthesized from rapeseed oil (RO) with diethanolamine (DEA), triethanolamine (TEA) and glycerol (GL) at different molar ratios. The structures of the synthesized polyols were analyzed using FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. Polyurethane (PU) networks from RO/DEA polyols and polymeric MDI showed higher tensile strength, modulus and hardness, but their elongation at break decreased, compared to the case of the PU obtained from RO/TEA and RO/GL polyols. The tensile strength and modulus of PU networks increased with increasing PU cohesion energy density (CED) and decreasing molecular weight between crosslinks M c . From the thermogravimetric analysis and its derivative thermograms, at the first stage of destruction (below 5 % weight loss) in the air and inert atmosphere, the PU obtained from RO polyols were ranked in the following order: PU RO/GL > PU RO/TEA > PU RO/DEA, and their thermostability was higher than that of the PU based on propylene oxide.  相似文献

Water-soluble pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) based on acrylic acid and carboxymethyl starch (CMS) have been prepared. The tack and peel adhesion to various paper types (newsprint, hygienic, packing, fax and art paper) as well as dynamic shear adhesion at higher temperatures (70–240?°C) have been tested with the aim of applying such PSA in a form of double-sided splicing tapes for paper industry. For all paper types tested tack and peel adhesion values increased with CMS content (0.1–10 wt% in PSA). The highest tack and peel adhesion values (for the system containing 10 wt% CMS) were noted for fax paper ca. 19.5 N/2.5 cm and 18.3 N/2.5 cm, respectively and the lowest ones for art paper: 14.7 N/2.5 cm and 13.5 N/2.5 cm, respectively. Obtained PSA were completely soluble in water, and the time of water-solubility depended on CMS content, as well as pH value, however it did not exceed 5 min.  相似文献

This paper reports the effect of glycerol on thermal, mechanical and morphology of the wheat-flour based thermoplastic sheets (<3 mm) fabricated using single screw extrusion followed by compression molding. The amount of glycerol (plasticizer) added during the formulation varies from 20 to 35 % w/w (20, 23, 25, 30 and 35 % w/w). Results indicate that increase in the amount of glycerol in the starch based thermoplastic sheets, lowers its hardness and tensile properties while an increase in the melt flow index. Variation in the glycerol content from 20 to 25 % w/w increases the impact strength of the thermoplastic sheets beyond this limit it decreases. The contact angle analysis shows that glycerol has effect on the surface energy and work of adhesion of the thermoplastic sheets. However, the presence of glycerol has no significant influence on the thermal stability of thermoplastic sheets above 200 °C.  相似文献

This paper presents a study on the effect of hydrothermal treatment (HTT) on municipal solid waste (MSW) and mechanical property of fuel pellet. The lab-scale HTT was conducted at the condition of 180–240 °C and 30–90 min. Results showed that the HTT could improve fuel property of MSW including heating value, dewatering and drying performance. The fuel pellet was produced at three different diameters (4, 6, and 8 mm). Tests of mechanical property and water adsorption were performed. Results showed that the fuel pellet was able to withstand the axial load of 19–54 N and the radial load of 72–130 N. The 8-mm pellet exhibited lowest Young’s modulus (18.26 MPa) indicating flexibility and ductility. Durability of the fuel pellet was high (91–94%) while the Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) was (57–76) higher than that of the biomass pellet (18–22) and the subbituminous coal (46–49) indicating the ease of grinding. The equilibrium moisture content of the fuel pellet was 5–6%. The small fuel pellet reached adsorption equilibrium faster than the large one. In sum, the fuel pellet produced from HTT showed good fuel property as well as mechanical property for transportation and utilization.  相似文献

Firstly, foam trays were produced from glyoxal cross-linked wheat, potato and corn starches and their mixtures. The most suitable starch type for starch-based foam tray production was selected according to the level of water absorption, density, surface and cross-section micrographs of the foam trays. It was decided that a wheat and potato starch blend was the most suitable starch source for producing the foam trays because they have the lowest water absorption percentage (25.5 ± 0.7%), low density (0.17 ± 0.01 g/cm3) and a smooth surface. Potato–wheat starch foam trays with fibres were produced by adding wheat and wood fibres. Unlike wood fibres addition, wheat fibres significantly decreased the percentage of water absorption (16.63 ± 1.2%) and density (0.115 ± 0.013 g/cm3) of the tray. Also, the trays including wheat fibre had a lighter colour than the wheat–potato starch tray. To further reduce water absorption of the tray, the trays were made by adding two different types of lipids (beeswax or shortening and three different types of filler materials—kaolin, montmorillonite or zinc oxide nanoparticles). According to the level of water absorption of the trays, it was decided that shortening and zinc oxide nanoparticles, in addition to kaolin, were respectively the most suitable lipid and filler materials. The foam trays were produced by adding these supplementary materials. The addition of shortening slightly, zinc oxide nanoparticles moderately and kaolin greatly increased the density of the wheat potato starch tray including fibre. However, the percent of water absorption of the trays containing wheat fibre + shortening or wheat fibre + shortening + zinc oxide nanoparticles decreased 6.4 ± 0.01 and 5.9 ± 0.3%, respectively.  相似文献

This research dealt with a novel method of fabricating green composites with biodegradable poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and natural hemp fiber. The new preparation method was that hemp fibers were firstly blending-spun with a small amount of PLA fibers to form compound fiber pellets, and then the traditional twin-screw extruding and injection-molding method were applied for preparing the composites containing 10–40 wt% hemp fibers with PLA pellets and compound fiber pellets. This method was very effective to control the feeding and dispersing of fibers uniformly in the matrix thus much powerful for improving the mechanical properties. The tensile strength and modulus were improved by 39 and 92 %, respectively without a significant decrease in elongation at break, and the corresponding flexural strength and modulus of composites were also improved by 62 and 90 %, respectively, when the hemp fiber content was 40 wt%. The impact strength of composite with 20 wt% hemp fiber was improved nearly 68 % compared with the neat PLA. The application of the silane coupling agent promoted further the mechanical properties of composites attributed to the improvement of interaction between fiber and resin matrix.  相似文献

Bacterial cellulose pellicles were produced by Gluconacetobacter xylinus using non conventional low-cost carbon sources, such as glycerol remaining from biodiesel production and grape bagasse, a residue of wine production. The carbon sources assayed showed their suitability for microbial cellulose production, with relatively high production values such as 10.0 g/l for the culture medium with glycerol from biodiesel as carbon source and corn steep liquor as nitrogen source; and 8.0 g/l for the culture medium containing grape bagasse and corn steep liquor. Glucose, commercial glycerol and cane molasses were also assayed as carbon sources for comparison. The bacterial celluloses produced were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Morphological analysis showed that bacterial cellulose microfibrils produced from the non-conventional media used were several micrometers long and had rectangular cross-sections with widths and thicknesses in the range of 35–70 and 13–24 nm, respectively. X-ray patterns showed crystallinity levels in the range of 74–79 % (area method), whereas both X-ray patterns and infrared spectroscopy evidenced the presence of peaks characteristic of Cellulose I polymorph. Besides thermal properties were similar to those found for the pellicle obtained from glucose. The study performed showed the suitability of using wine residues or glycerol remaining from increasing biodiesel production as cheap carbon sources for production of bacterial cellulose microfibrils, with similar characteristics as those obtained by use of more expensive carbon sources such as glucose or commercial glycerol. On the other hand, the low cost nitrogen sources used (corn steep liquor or diammonium phosphate) also contributed to the economy of the bioprocess.  相似文献

Anaerobic co-digestion of dairy manure (DM) and concentrated food processing wastes (FPW) under thermophilic (55 °C) and mesophilic (35 °C) temperatures, and fertilizer value of the effluent were investigated in this study. Two types of influent feedstock were utilized: 100 % DM and a 7:3 mixture (wet weight basis) of DM and FPW. The contents of the FPW, as feedstock were 3:3:3:1 mixture of cheese whey, animal blood, used cooking oil and residue of fried potato. Four continuous digestion experiments were carried out in 10 L digesters. Co-digestion under thermophilic temperature increased methane production per digester volume. However, co-digestion at 35 °C was inhibited. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen (N) recovered after digestion ranged from 73.1 to 91.9 %, while recoveries of ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) exceeded 100 %. The high recovery of NH4-N was attributed to mineralization of influent organic N. The mixture of DM and FPW showed greater recoveries of NH4-N after digestion compared to DM only, reflecting its greater organic N degradability. The ratios of extractable to total calcium, phosphorus and magnesium were slightly reduced after digestion. These results indicate that co-digestion of DM and FPW under thermophilic temperature enhances methane production and offers additional benefit of organic fertilizer creation.  相似文献

A large amount of rice straw is generated and left as much in paddy fields, which causes greenhouse gas emissions as methane. Rice straw can be used as bioenergy. Rice straw pellets are a promising technology because pelletization of rice straw is a form of mass and energy densification, which leads to a product that is easy to handle, transport, store and utilize because of the increase in the bulk density. The operational conditions required to produce high quality rice straw pellets have not been determined. This study determined the optimal moisture content range required to produce rice straw pellets with high yield ratio and high heating value, and also determined the influence of particle size and the forming temperature on the yield ratio and durability of rice straw pellets. The optimal moisture content range was between 13% and 20% under a forming temperature of 60 or 80 °C. The optimal particle size was between 10 and 20 mm, considering the time and energy required for shredding, although the particle size did not significantly affect the yield ratio and durability of the pellets. The optimized conditions provided high quality rice straw pellets with nearly 90% yield ratio, ?12 MJ/kg for the lower heating value, and >95% durability.  相似文献

A novel biodegradable polymer based on glycerol, succinic anhydride and maleic anhydride, poly(glycerol succinate-co-maleate), poly(GlySAMA), was synthesized by melt polycondensation and tested as a matrix for composites with nanocrystalline cellulose. This glycerol-based polymer is thermally stable as a consequence of its targeted cross-linked structure. To broaden its range of properties, it was specifically formulated with nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) at concentrations of 1, 2 and 4 wt%, and showed improved mechanical properties with NCC. Specifically, the effect of reinforcement on mechanical properties, thermal stability, structure, and biodegradability was evaluated, respectively, by tensile tests and thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction and respirometry. The neat poly(GlySAMA) polymer proved flexible, exhibiting an elongation-to-break of 8.8 % while the addition of nanowhiskers (at 4 wt%) caused tensile strength and Young’s modulus to increase, 20 and 40 %, respectively. Stiffness improved without significantly decreasing thermal stability as measured by thermogravimetric analysis. Biodegradation tests indicated that all samples were degradable but NCC reduced the rate of biodegradation.  相似文献

There is an increased interest in composting as an effective means of handling large amounts of organic wastes generated by oil palm industries in Malaysia. However, very few studies have been conducted to develop an effective composting process using the multi-enzymatic system. This study demonstrates an effective composting process of EFB (empty fruit bunch) with POME (palm oil mill effluent), using the optimized process parameters and compatible multi-enzymatic fungal system. A higher decrease (3 %) of organic matter was achieved in the fungal treated system, almost double that of the control (without inoculum). The lowest C/N ratio and soluble protein content recorded were about 17 and 128.82 g/kg, respectively. The maximum germination index obtained was 116 % at day 50 of treatment, which is considered high compared to the control (uninoculated). Furthermore, the maximum activity of ligninase enzyme was found to be 25.95 U/g and the highest cellulase activity was recorded at 0.975 U/g.  相似文献

Prior to composting, the composition of palm oil mill wastes were analyzed. Palm empty fruit bunches (PEFB) contained the highest total organic carbon (52.83 % dry weight) while palm oil mill biogas sludge (POMS) and decanter cake (DC) contained higher total nitrogen (3.6 and 2.37 % dry weight, respectively) than the others. In addition, palm oil fuel ash (POFA) had a high amount of phosphorus and potassium (2.17 and 1.93 % dry weight, respectively). The effect of mixture ratio of POMS and other palm oil mill wastes for composting was studied using the mixed culture Super LDD1 as an inoculum. All compost piles turned dark brown and attained an ambient temperature after 40 days incubation. The pH values were stable in the range of 6.9–7.8 throughout the process whereas the moisture content tended to decrease till the end with the final value around 30 %. After 60 days incubation, the mixture ratio of POMS:PEFB:DC at 2:1:1 with the addition of biogas effluent gave the highest quality of the compost. Its nitrogen content was 31.75 % higher than the other treatments that may be a result of growth of ink cap mushroom (Coprinus sp.). This is the first report on the occurrence of this mushroom during composting. In addition, its nutrients (3.26 % N, 0.84 % P and 2.03 % K) were higher than the level of the Organic Fertilizer Standard. The mixed culture Super LDD1 produced the highest activity of CMCase (6.18 Unit/g) and xylanase (11.68 Unit/g) at 9 days fermentation. Therefore, this solid-state fermentation could be employed for production of compost as well as enzymes.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop and characterize biodegradable films containing mucilage, chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in different concentrations. The films were prepared by casting on glass plates using glycerol as plasticizer. Mechanical properties, water vapor and oxygen barrier, as well as the interaction with water, were measured. The compatibility of the film-forming components and the uniformity of the films were determined by zeta potential and SEM, respectively. The glycerol and mucilage allowed obtaining more hydrophilic films. The barrier properties of the films made from 100 % chitosan were similar to composed films containing PVA up to 40 %. The results of this study suggest that the interaction between chitosan and mucilage could increase water vapor permeability. The films prepared from either 100 % chitosan or PVA showed a more hydrophobic behavior as compared to the composed films. The films were homogenous since no boundary or separation of components was observed, indicating a good compatibility of the components in the films.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to investigate the suitability of using sorghum bran in recycled low density polyethylene (R-LDPE) composites manufacturing. In response to the disposal of environmental problematic agricultural and polymer waste, composite sheets using recycled low density polyethylene and sorghum bran of different loadings (5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%) were prepared by melt compounding and compression molding. The effects of sorghum bran loadings on the mechanical, thermal, water absorption, swelling and crystalline properties of the composites were determined. Characterization of composites was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo gravimetric (TGA/DTG) and mechanical analyses. It was found that increasing fiber loadings resulted to increased moduli and tensile strength while hardness was decreased. XRD indicated that fiber addition to R-LDPE did not change characteristic peak position. DSC results showed that the R-LDPE had significantly larger peak heat flow during cooling run than the blank R-LDPE, showing higher crystallization rates for R-LDPE. The results obtained confirmed that sorghum bran particles showed some potential as a good reinforcement in polymer matrix composites and indicate its thermal stability for possibly future composite applications.  相似文献

Properties of Starch/PVA Blend Films Containing Citric Acid as Additive   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend films were prepared successfully by using starch, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glycerol (GL) sorbitol (SO) and citric acid (CA) for the mixing process. The influence of mixing time, additional materials and drying temperature of films on the properties of the films was investigated. With increase in mixing time, the tensile strength (TS), elongation (%E), degree of swelling (DS) and solubility (S) of the film were equilibrated. The equilibrium for TS, %E, DS and S value was 20.12 MPa, 36.98%, 2.4 and 0.19, respectively. The mixing time of equilibrium was 50 min. TS, %E, DS and S of starch/PVA blend film were examined adding glycerol (GL), sorbitol (SO) and citric acid (CA) as additives. At all measurement results, except for DS, the film adding CA was better than GL or SO because hydrogen bonding at the presence of CA with hydroxyl group and carboxyl group increased the inter/intramolecular interaction between starch, PVA and additives. Citric acid improves the properties of starch/PVA blend film compared to glycerol and sobitol. When the film was dried at low temperature, the properties of the films were clearly improved because the hydrogen bonding was activated at low temperature.  相似文献

Two bio-based polymers, cellulose diacetate (CDA) and starch, were used to prepare blends with reasonable properties and low cost. Due to the poor processing properties, starch was modified in the presence of glycerol and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), and CDA was plasticized by triacetin (TA) and ESO, respectively. The morphologies of the blends with different amounts of modified starch (MST) were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the physical properties of the blends, including thermal stability, mechanical property, water and moisture resistance, were investigated. The equilibrium moisture absorption rates of the blends containing 30 and 50 wt% MST at 100 % of relative humidity(RH) were 9.4 and 15.0 %, respectively. SEM and DMA results demonstrated that CDA and MST had a certain extent of compatibility. Due to the partial plasticization of starch, the tensile strength of the blends was nearly not affected by the amount of MST. Even if 50 wt% MST was added, the tensile strength of the blend was as high as 24.7 MPa. The obtained blend containing 30 wt% MST can keep good mechanical properties at 50 % RH, and its tensile strength and elongation at break are 30.2 MPa and 3.6 %, respectively. All the results show that the CDA/MST blends have a potential as an environmental friendly material.  相似文献

The manufacturing of orange juice generates high volumes of orange peel waste which should not be deposited in landfill according to current recommendations. Furthermore, glycerol is a compound co-generated in biodiesel manufacturing, but the volume generated is higher than the current demand for pure glycerol. The anaerobic co-digestion of orange peel waste with residual glycerol could reduce the inhibitory effect of some compounds and provide a correct nutrient balance. Under mesophilic temperature and semi-continuous conditions, a mixture of orange peel waste-residual glycerol of 1:1 (in COD) operated favorably for organic loads up to 2.10 g VS/L. At higher organic loads, the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and a decrease in the pH caused process destabilization. The methane yield coefficient was quite constant, with a mean value of 330 ± 51 mLSTP/g VSadded, while the organic loading rate (OLR) reached a mean value of 1.91 ± 0.37 kg VS/m3 d (17.59 ± 2.78 kg mixture/m3 d) and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) varied in a range of 8.5–30.0 d.  相似文献

Biodegradable polyester polyol was synthesized from oleochemical glycerol monostearate (GMS) and glutaric acid under a non-catalyzed and solvent-free polycondensation method. The chemical structure of GMS-derived polyester polyol (GPP) was elucidated by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR, and molecular weight of GPP was characterized by GPC. The synthesized GPP with acid value of 3.03 mg KOH/g sample, hydroxyl value of 115.72 mg KOH/g sample and Mn of 1345 g/mol was incorporated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polycaprolactone diol (PCL diol) to produce a water-blown porous polyurethane system via one-shot foaming method. The polyurethanes were optimized by evaluating glycerol as a crosslinker, silicone surfactant and water blowing agent on tensile properties of polyurethanes. All polyurethanes underwent structural change, and crystalline hard segments of polyurethanes were shifted to higher temperature suggested that hard segments undergone re-ordering process during enzymatic treatment. In terms of biocompatibility, polyurethane scaffold produced by reacting 100% w/w of GPP with isophorone diisocyanate and additives showed the highest cells viability of 3T3 mouse fibroblast (94%, day 1), and MG63 human osteosarcoma (107%, day 1) and better cell adhesion as compared to reference polyurethane produced by only PEG and PCL diol (3T3 cell viability: 8%; MG63 cell viability: 2%). The current work demonstrated GPP synthesized from renewable and environmental friendly resources produced polyurethanes that allows improvement in physico-chemical, mechanical and biocompatibility properties. By blending with increasing content of GPP, the water-blown porous polyurethane scaffold has shown great potential as biomaterial for soft and hard tissue engineering.  相似文献

The individual and interactive effects of glycerol and chitosan concentrations on edible film properties were investigated using response surface methodology. The results of ANOVA indicated that all the independent variables exhibited significant effect on the film properties. Chitosan concentration had a positive effect on CO2 permeability and negative effect on O2 while the glycerol concentration had a positive effect on permeability to both gases. Regarding water vapor permeability, the chitosan concentration had a negative effect, whereas the glycerol had no influence. Moreover, both chitosan and glycerol concentration influenced the elongation at break point (%A), and only glycerol concentration had a significant effect on tensile strength. Optimization by desirability approach was carried out on the independent variables to get the optimum levels within the experimental conditions. It was found that 1.5 % of chitosan and 25 % of glycerol (wt/wt of chitosan) retarded respiration and showed a strong permeability to water vapor.  相似文献
