Seven colonies of Lobophytum compactum Tixier-Durivault, 1956, which produce isolobophytolide as the major secondary metabolite, were selected from a fringing reef in the Pelorus Channel, Palm Island Group (18°34S; 146°29E), North Queensland, Australia. In September 1991, they were sectioned to afford two portions which were relocated to a grid, and a significant part of the parent colony which was left in place. The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of relocation and contact with a toxic alga on the secondary metabolite content of a soft coral. A significant increase in the concentration of isolobophytolide was observed for all relocated colonies (n=14, p=0.001) compared to the non-relocated control colonies. This decreased after 2 mo, and was not significantly different from that of the non-relocated control colonies (n=14, p=0.881). After 1 mo, Plocamium hamatum J. Agardh plants were placed in direct contact with 50% of the relocated colonies. All soft-coral colonies in contact with the alga (n=7), showed tissue necrosis on the parts in direct contact with the alga after a further 2 wk. Tissues of the relocated control colonies (n=7), and those portions of treated colonies which were not in direct contact with the alga, were not affected. The parts of the colonies in contact with the alga showed a significant decrease in lipid content over time (n=7, p=0.001) and also a decrease in the concentration of the diterpene isolobophytolide (n=7, p=0.001). The effects of P. hamatum on the soft coral were essentially restricted to contract necrosis; chemical variations in the affected tissue were the outcomes of this necrosis. These results indicate that stress due to relocation is a more important factor in the variation of isolobophytolide levels in the soft coral L. compactum than is contact with the alga P. hamatum.  相似文献

The faecal pellets from specimens of the prosobranch mollusc Ovula ovum found feeding on the soft coral Sarcophyton sp. at Eclipse Island, Palm Island Group (18°46S; 146°33E) in November 1980 were analysed. The only terpene present in the faeces, 7,8-deoxysarcophytoxide, differed from the major constituent of the soft coral, sarcophytoxide, suggesting that the latter had been transformed into the former within the cowrie. This transformation is not trivial, and could not be produced simply by acid catalysis. Subsequent analysis of tissues dissected from different regions of O. ovum indicates that the transformation is probably effected by enzymes in the digestive diverticula stomach region of the prosobranch. The transformed compound is significantly less toxic to the mosquito fish Gambusia affinis Baird and Girard than the ingested compound.  相似文献

An interaction between the alcyonarian octocoral Nephthea brassica Kukenthal, 1904 and the scleractinian Acropora hyacinthus Dana was photographed and the assemblage collected at Rib Reef (18°15S; 146°45E), Central Region of the Great Barrier Reef, in September 1980. The interaction, which did not involve allelopathy, was characterised by extensive deposition of undifferentiated aragonite by the scleractinian in the vicinity of the soft coral, which moved across the surface of the acroporid. The basal attachment region of the nephtheid showed structural features which permitted movement. The net effect of this interaction was a series of divided trails across the surface of the acroporid plate evidencing the movement through growth and asexual division of the parent colony. These trails were susceptible to secondary colonisation by epifauna and algae which may reduce the fitness of the acroporid. This movement appears to afford N. brassica a distinct advantage in competing for space with acroporid corals.  相似文献

Summary Social influence on circadian activity rhythms was investigated in the nocturnal Australian marsupial Petaurus breviceps. The activity of two and two was recorded electroacoustically and observed by an IR television camera in LD 12:12 (101:10-1lx) and in LL (10-1lx) when housed isolated and in pairs (+). In LD-entrained animals the average duration of locomotion, orientation movements, grooming and total activity is influenced by social housing, and individually different activity patterns are harmonized. In constant illumination conditions, however, the members of a pair are not mutually synchronized and free-run with different circadian periodlengths. Therefore social influence on the LD-entrained activity rhythm in Petaurus should be interpreted as social masking rather than direct influence on the circadian system.  相似文献

The six-rayed starfish Leptasterias hexactis (Stimpson, 1862) is seasonally exposed to low salinities in southeastern Alaska. Individuals that were gradually exposed to reduced salinities in the laboratory had a 28-d TLm of 12.9 S. The activity of L. hexactis, as measured by its activity coefficient, varied directly with salinity. Individual feeding rates of the starfish on similarly exposed Mytilus edulis, measured daily for 21 d at salinities of 30, 20 and 15 S, also varied directly with salinity. The dry weight of mussel tissue consumed was 8.84, 8.49 and 0.58 mg ·starfish-1·d-1 at 20, 20 and 15 S. Expressed as percent of dry starfish weight, the daily feeding rate was 1.35, 0.76 and 0.10% at 30, 20 and 15 S. Absorption efficiency decreased from 64% at 30 S to 49% at 20 S, further reducing the energy available for metabolism. Growth, measured in terms of changes in total dry weight or dry weight of soft tissues, also varied directly with salinity. Although exposure to hyposmotic conditions did induce stress responses, as indicated by reductions in activity, feeding, absorption efficiency and growth rates, L. hexactis maintained positive growth for at least a 3-wk period in the laboratory at 20 S and 13°CC. The population of L. hexactis investigated must be considered euryhaline and brief periods of exposure to hyposmotic conditions should not limit its distribution.  相似文献

Adult silversides, Menidia menidia menidia (Linnaeus), were collected in early March, 1974 and maintained in 3 recirculating seawater tanks in the laboratory. Respective groups were fed Moore-Clark Fry Fine at 3, 7 and 10% of their body weight per day. The photoperiod (light intensity approximately 2000 lux) was increased in increments of 10 min/day from 12 h light to 14 h light. The water temperature was increased by 1C°/day from the ambient collection temperature, 14°C, to 22°C. Twenty-four days after beginning laboratory conditioning, fish in each tank were stripped. There was a significant increase (2, =0.05) in the number of ripe males at all three feeding levels, compared to an initial field-collected group that was checked at the beginning of the conditioning period. Females also showed significant increases in ripeness at the 7 and 10% but not at the 3% feeding level. The gonadal indices (gonad weight expressed as percentage of body weight) of both sexes were significantly greater than those measured for the initial field-collected group, but did not differ from those of adults collected from the field at the time laboratory conditioning was terminated. Techniques for maintaining eggs from field-ripened adults in the laboratory have been developed, and the effect of salinity on the percentage emergence of larvae determined. The highest emergence rate of larvae was 61% when eggs were maintained at 30 S. Emergence was 56% at 20 S and 47% at 10 S. The effect of delayed feeding on survival and growth of larvae was determined at 20 and 30 S and 25°C. Survival and growth was best for larvae fed Artemia sp. nauplii immediately after emergence at 30 S.Contribution No. 252, Gulf Breeze Environmental Research Laboratory.Associate Laboratory of the National Environmental Research Center, Corvallis, Oregon, USA.  相似文献

Free amino acid (FAA) levels were measured from May through October 1991 in gill tissues of two groups of juvenile oysters (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin), one transferred from a low salinity field site (8) to a field site of high salinity (20) and high Perkinsus marinus (Mackin, Owen, and Collier) prevalence, the other kept at the low salinity field site. Within 24 h, glycine levels in the oysters transferred to high salinity increased 8-fold, taurine concentrations doubled and the total FAA pool rose from 150 mol g–1 dry wt to 400 mol g–1 dry wt. Taurine levels reached a plateau within 20 d after transfer to high salinity and remained at that level until P. marinus infections were detected 85 d after transfer. Taurine and glycine levels declined by 40% in the high salinity population as infection intensity increased between 70 and 105 d. Total FAA declined by approximately 33% over this period. The oysters kept at low salinity were not infected and continued to grow while the infected high salinity oysters showed no increase in shell length after Day 85. FAA levels in the low salinity group remained relatively constant throughout the experiment except for an initial rise triggered by an increase in ambient salinity from 8 to 12. The results suggest that salinity tolerance mechanisms in C. virginica may be impaired by P. marinus infection.  相似文献

Quantitative measurements have been made on the ultra-structure and capillary supply to the axial muscles of the mesopelagic hatchet fish Argyropelecus hemigymnus (Cocco, 1829). Fish were collected at Eastern North Atlantic Ocean Station 10244, 32°48N; 31°15W during November 1980, from a depth of 480 to 550 m. Mitochondria with densely packed cristae occupy 44.3% of slow-fibre volume. Each myofibril is in direct contact with a mitochondrion. Compared with other fishes studied, the capillary supply to A. hemigymnus slow fibres is poorly developed. The average number of capillaries per fibre is 0.9, such that each m of capillary contact supplies 0.011 m2 of fibre cross-sectional area. The capillary surface area (m2) supplying 1 m3 of slow-fibre mitochondria is 0.17 in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), 0.14 in rat-fish (Chimaera monstrosa), 0.14 in tench (Tinca tinca), 0.16 in catfish (Clarias mossambica), and only 0.025 for A. hemigymnus. It is suggested that, relative to the former species, some modifications in factors determining tissue oxygenation (e.g. myoglobin concentrations, blood flow, perfusion distribution or haemoglobin) and/or mitochondrial respiration rate are required in order to match oxygen supply and demand to the slow muscle in A. hemigymnus.  相似文献

Sediment reworking rates of Axiothella rubrocincta (Johnson, 1901) (Polychaeta: Maldanidae) were measured in situ in Tomales Bay, California (USA), from August, 1969 through July, 1970. On the average, each adult worm (approximate fresh weight=1 g) reworks about 5 g dry sediment d-1 at a mean temperature of 13.4°C and a mean salinity of 31.8.Reworking rates are positively correlated with temperature and salinity, and negatively with sediment organic carbon, sedimentation rates and grain size. An inverse correlation exists between sediment reworking rates (g dry sediment g-1 wet wt of worm d-1) and g wet weight of worm. Sediment parameters deseribing unworked sediments are not significantly different from those for fecal sediments. Although these data suggest this species to be a non-selective deposit-feeder, it is more likely that it is faculatively selective.  相似文献

The nutrient status (limitation vs sufficiency) of dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) symbiotic with reef corals in Bermuda was assessed in 1989 and 1990 by measuring the enhancement of dark carbon fixation with 20 M ammonium by isolated symbionts. A colony ofMadracis mirabilis was kept in the laboratory and fed daily or starved for one month. Symbionts from fed portions of the colony had ammonium-enhancement ratios (NH 4dark + ; SWdark;SW=seawater without added ammonium) similar to those of the original field population (1.2 to 1.3). Ammonium-enhancement ratios increased with starvation of the host (x1.7) as did values forV D:V L [(ammonium dark rate-seawater dark rate): light rate in seawater]. Both parameters indicated decreasing nitrogen sufficiency of the algae when the host was not fed, but starvation appeared to affect these algae less than symbionts of sea anemones. Field samples of zooxanthellae fromM. mirabilis (Three Hill Shoals and Bailey's Bay Flats) yielded results similar to those for fed corals, but those taken from Bailey's Bay Flats in May 1990 yielded exceptionally high values for enhancement (>3) andV D:V L indicating pronounced nitrogen limitation at the time of sampling. We sampled zooxanthellae from populations ofMontastrea annularis at 8 m (Three Hill Shoals) and 24 m (Soldier's Point) depths. Enhancement andV D:V L values for zooxanthellae from the 8 m corals were density-dependent: symbionts from corals with normal symbiont densities displayed the most nitrogen limitation (enhancement values=1.4 to 2.0), while those from bleached corals with lower density exhibited enhancement andV D:V L values typical of nitrogen-sufficient algae. Symbionts isolated from the 25 m corals yielded the highest values, and appeared to exhibit the least nitrogen-sufficiency for this species.  相似文献

Fatty acid biosynthesis in the larval stages of Penaeus japonicus Bate was examined by feeding microencapsulated diets containing (1-14C) palmitic acid, and fat-free diets supplemented with defined fatty acids. Highest larval growth rates were achieved on diets containing Tapes philippinarum lipid and, when defined fatty acids were substituted, on diets containing 20:63 fatty acid. The radioactive tracer experiments indicate that 16:17, 18:0 and 18:19 fatty acids may be synthesised from palmitic acid and that P. japonicus larvae may possess the ability to elongate 18:33 to 20:53 and 22:63, and 18:26 to 20:46. However, the rates of these reactions appear to be too slow to meet the larval requirements for essential fatty acids and the 3 series of polyunsaturated fatty acids must be provided in the diet.  相似文献

Investigations have been carried out on the carotenoids in Leander (Palaemon) serratus (Pennant) and Nephrops norvegicus (L.) (Crustacea: Decapoda) from the Adriatic Sea. The presence of the carotenoids was determined by means of columnar and thin-layer chromatography. The following carotenoids were found: Leander serratus: -carotene, echinenone, isocryptoxanthin, cryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, isozeaxanthin, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, and astacene; Nephrops norvegicus: -carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, and astacene.  相似文献

This paper deals with the role of bicarbonates in the apparent free space (AFS) and their importance for the photosynthetic process. Both the littoral alga Fucus virsoides (Mediterranean Sea) and the sublittoral alga Laminaria saccharina (Baltic Sea) show the same response. Unloading of Clions and subsequent reloading of HCO3-ions result in a positive photosynthetic rate in distilled water (free of CO2). Time of exposure of an algal thallus to bicarbonate solutions, as well as the concentration of these solutions, influences AFS-assimilation of the ions.  相似文献

Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus), which is known to release planula larvae on a monthly cycle, was grown in full daytime solar irradiance, but with four treatments of night irradiance: (1) natural night irradiance, (2) shifted-phase (total darkness during nights of full moon with artificial irradiance at lunar intensity on nights of new moon), (3) constant full moon (full lunar irradiance every night), and (4) constant new moon (total darkness every night). The reproductive cycle of the corals held in the shifted-phase treatment moved out of synchrony with the cycle of corals exposed to a natural lunar cycle of night irradiance. Two previously described types of P. damicornis were tested. The Type Y normally start releasing larvae at full moon, with peak production at third quarter. In the shifted-phase treatment they began releasing planulae at new moon (artificial full moon), with peak production at first quarter. The Type B corals, that normally start releasing planulae at new moon with peak production at first quarter, began to release planulae at full moon (artificial new moon), with peak production at third quarter. Populations of corals grown either in the constant full moon or constant new moon treatment quickly lost synchronization of monthly larva production, although production of planulae continued. Thus spawning is synchronized by night irradiance.Contribution No. 702 of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, measurements of ingested ration, assimilated ration and assimilation efficiency in the polychaete Lanice conchilega (Pallas) were carried out at 12°C and at a food concentration of 40x106 cells of Dunaliella marina/l. Over periods of 20 to 46 days, the ingested ration was determined photometrically by the continous automatic recording apparatus described by Winter (1973). The assimilated ration was calculated from the calorific content of the food ingested minus the calorific content of the faeces produced. Within the range of body size investigated (1.3 to 35.0 mg dry-tissue weight), the food intake (=filtration rate=F) was found to be a linear function of body size (W) according to the equation F=0.88 W 0.32. The daily food intake-expressed as percentage of dry-tissue weight-decreased from 35.7 to 3.9% with increasing body size. The assimilation efficiency was found to vary between 70.6 and 77.2% and showed no significant correlation with body size. The absolute amounts of food retained from suspension and the assimilation efficiencies calculated for L. conchilega are within the range typical for obligatory suspension-feeding organisms. This implies that L. conchilega is capable of completely replacing deposit-feeding by suspension-feeding.This work was made possible through a research grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in connection with the program Litoralforschung-Abwässer in Küstennähe.  相似文献

Feeding, growth and bioluminescence of the thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium huberi were measured as a function of food concentration for laboratory cultures grown on the diatom Ditylum brightwellii. Ingestion of food increased with food concentration. Maximum ingestion rates were measured at food concentrations of 600 g C l-1 and were 0.7 g C individual-1 h-1 (1.8 D. brightwelli cells individual-1 h-1). Clearance rates decreased asymptotically with increasing food concentration. Maximum clearance rates at low food concentration were ca. 23 l ind-1 h-1, which corresponds to a volume-specific clearance rate of 5.9x105 h-1. Cell size of P huberi was highly variable, with a mean diameter of 42 m, but no clear relationship between cell size and food concentration was evident. Specific growth rates increased with food concentration until maximum growth rates of 0.7 d-1 were reached at a food concentration of 400 g C l-1 (1000 cells ml-1). Food concentrations as low as 10 g C l-1 of D. brightwellii (25 cells ml-1) were able to support growth of P. huberi. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied with its nutritional condition and growth rate. Cells held without food lost their bioluminescence capacity in a matter of days. P. huberi raised at different food concentrations showed increased bioluminescence capacity, up to food concentration that supported maximum growth rates. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied over a diel cycle, and these rhythmic changes persisted during 48 h of continuous darkness, indicating that the rhythm was under endogenous control.  相似文献

For valine uptake by the polychaete Nereis virens Sars, the kinetic constants were: V max=355 nmol g-1 fresh weight h-1, K m=20 M. Leucine and some other amino acids acted as partial inhibitors of valine uptake. Valine uptake rate was 78% higher at 21.5 S than at 14 S. The major portion of valine absorbed by the polychaete could be extracted as free valine, with 6.5 to 15.6% being respired, and 3.6 to 9.5% incorporated into proteins. Calculations indicate that 7 to 12% of the metabolism of N. virens may be sustained by uptake of glycine and aspartic acid from natural concentrations. It is suggested that uptake of amino acids by this worm is important in the nitrogen cycling of marine sediments.  相似文献

Main effects and interactions of light and temperature on rates of growth (), net photosynthesis (Ps), and dark respiration (R) of the red seaweedGracilaria tikvahiae were investigated in outdoor, nutrient-replete continuous-flow seawater culture chambers. Below 15°C,G. tikvahiae did not grow and between 15° and 30°C, both main effects and interactions of light and temperature on and Ps were significant, which explains the occurrence of this alga as a summer annual in its northern range. Temperature interacted with light (I) through its influence on the vs I and Ps vs I curves. The initial slope of the vs I curve, , the light saturation intensity, Is, and maximum growth rate, max, were all significantly lowerat 15°C compared to 20°, 25°, or 30°C. Maximum values of max, the Ps:R ratio and the net photosynthesis:gross photosynthesis ratio (Ps:Pg) all occurred at 25°C, suggesting that this is the best temperature for growth ofG. tikvahiae. Values for Pmax increased up to 30°C, indicating that the temperature for maximum growth and net photosynthesis are not the same forG. tikvahiae. Significant photoinhibition of growth and photosynthesis at full incident sunlight (I0) occurred at 15°C but not at 20°, 25°, or 30°C. Steele's equation fit the 15°C vs I data best, whereas the hyperbolic tangent function fit the 20°, 25°, and 30°C data best. Main effects and interactionof light intensity and temperature on rates of R were also significant (P<0.001). R was highly intercorrelated with and Ps (0.86r0.94), indicating that R inG. tikvahiae is primarily regulated by growth rate and not temperatureper se. Environmental factors that regulate growth, such as light intensity, exert a great influence on R inG. tikvahiae.  相似文献

The average grazing and ingestion rates of all stages of the marine planktonic copepod Calanus helgolandicus (Calanoida) from nauplius stage IV to adults were measured experimentally at 15°C in agitated cultures. The chain-forming diatom Lauderia borealis and the unarmoured dinoflagellate Gymnodinium splendens were offered as food. The food concentrations were close to natural conditions and ranged from 36 to 101 g of organic carbon per liter. The medium body weights expressed in g of organic carbon of almost all larval stages raised at 49 g C/1 were identical with the weight of the same stages caught in the Pacific Ocean off La Jolla, California, USA. In a log-log system, grazing and ingestion rates increased almost linearly with increasing body weight. Grazing rates ranged from 4 to 21 ml/day/nauplius stage IV to 286 ml to 773 ml/day/female. Ingestion rates increased from 0.2 g to 0.8 g C/day/nauplius stage IV to 18 g to 69 g C/day/female. Grazing and ingestion rates per unit body weight decreased gradually with increasing body weight. The daily ingested amount of food decreased from 292 to 481% of the body weight (g C) of nauplius stage V to 28–85% of the body weight of adult females. Grazing and ingestion performances of all stages increased with increasing particle size. Grazing rates decreased and ingestion rates increased with increasing food concentrations. The published data on food intake of the different age groups of C. helgolandicus show that the young stages of herbivorous planktonic copepods can play a major part in the consumption of phytoplankton in the sea due to their high grazing and ingestion rates.  相似文献
