The objective of this study was to determine the blood lead level (BLL) of children aged under 5 living in western Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 100 blood samples, 100 drinking water samples, and 21 vegetable samples were assessed for lead (Pb) contamination. BLL was observed in the range of 3–11.58?µg?dL?1 with a maximal level of 11.58?±?0.05?µg?dL?1 in Kazipur village. Lead in water samples was detected in the range of 0.006–0.095?ppm and identified at upto 9.5-fold higher than the stated permissible limit. A significant positive correlation (+0.679) was obtained between BLL and water Pb levels. All vegetable samples were also contaminated with Pb upto 12-fold higher than the permissible limit of 2.5?µg?g?1 of Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA) 1954. Untreated industrial effluents were identified as the responsible factors for Pb occurrence in the study area. The presence of lead may be associated with the increased antisocial activities of children living in western Uttar Pradesh. Children with elevated BLL had poorer nutritional status than those with background Pb levels. There is an urgent need for a national campaign to monitor the BLL of children in India.  相似文献

In this study, we present evidence of lead in lip liner, oil absorbent powder, mascara, concealer, lipsticks, lip gloss, and foundation. The samples were analyzed for lead by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The levels of lead in concealer, mascara, lip liner, and oil absorbent powder were found to be 7.4?±?1.3?µg?g?1, 15.8?±?0.2?µg?g?1, 29.0?±?9.2?µg?g?1, and 17.3?±?2.9?µg?g?1, respectively. The levels of lead in lipsticks, lip gloss, and foundation ranged from not detected to 73.1?±?5.2?µg?g?1, 4.7 to 11.7?±?2.8?µg?g?1, and 7.8 to 32.9?±?1.4?µg?g?1, respectively. Thus, in the majority of samples, the concentrations of lead are higher than the USFDA maximum permissible concentration of 0.10?µg?g?1 in candy and cosmetics. In lipsticks alone, only 25% of 40 samples were found to meet the requirement. Therefore, continuous use of cosmetic products in which lead concentration exceeds the maximum permissible level may pose a health hazard for the female population of South Africa in the long run.  相似文献

Previous lead (Pb) exposure studies identified the Michelena sector in Valencia as a ‘critical’ area for Pb contamination. An analytical-ecological study was designed to evaluate the association of environmental and nutritional variables with blood lead (BPb) in children attending two schools located in this sector. A questionnaire was administered and the findings were correlated with BPb and serum-calcium (S-Ca) levels. The total population examined included 60 children (4–9 years old). The mean BPb values was 10.5?±?3?ug/dL (61.7%?≥?10?ug/dL) and the mean S-Ca was 8.9?±?0.7?mg/dL. A significant difference (p?=?0.042) was found between BPbs in males (11.1?±?3.1?ug/dL) when compared with females (9.6?±?2.8?ug/dL). Child age, school, schedule at school, parents' occupational exposure, habits, and socioeconomic status had no significant association with BPbs. The relationship between BPb levels (dependent variable) and the S-Ca and daily Ca intake levels (independent variables) was analysed through multiple regression analysis. The results show an inverse relationship between BPb and both variables (β?=??0.073, and β?=??0.001) respectively, with the daily Ca intake being the only significant variable in the model (p?=?0.04). Although average BPbs was not very high, the percentage of children with BPbs higher than the US-CDC intervention level was greater than those found in other studies. Since detailed information is generally unavailable for these children in Venezuela, this study provides insights for future research.  相似文献

Selected hematological parameters of Clarias gariepinus exposed to sublethal concentrations of the dispersant goldcrew were measured weekly for four consecutive weeks under a static renewal condition in order to simulate possible effects of clean-up operations in the aquatic environment. Hemoglobin (Hb) hematocrit (PCV), red blood cell count (RBCC), white blood cell count (WBCC), and platelet values were 15.40–13.58 g dL?1, 42.36–36.38%, 5.50–4.09 × 102 L?1, 6.22–6.62 × 102 L?1 and 362.87–283.0 × 109, respectively, from week 1 to week 4. Duration of exposure had a marked significance (p < 0.05) on all blood parameters except WBCC. Also, Hb, PCV, RBCC, and platelet had values of 15.80–13.27 g dL?1, 24.12–35.52%, 5.17–4.0 × 102 L?1, 5.69–6.85 × 109 L?1, and 395.25–227.25 × 10, respectively, from control to maximum treatment levels. Exposure concentrations have a significant impact (p < 0.05) on all blood parameters. It may be concluded that Goldcrew has a marked negative effect on fish blood and therefore a need to observe restraint in its usage.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare two hot spots of lead (Pb) exposure in Israeli and Jordanian occupational settings. The study also sought to assess whether any differences in regulations and legislation regarding occupational health could be identified as a source of exposure disparities. Blood and hair specimens were collected from workers in a battery factory in Jordan and a secondary Pb smelter in Israel and compared. About 33% of the currently exposed group showed blood lead (BPb) levels above the internationally recommended concentration of 40 µg dL?1. Although the differences of BPb levels between Israel and Jordan were not statistically significant, average levels were lower in Jordan. Beyond the difference in the factory types, disparity in exposure levels might be explained due to a combination of proclivities of factory management, public policies, existing medical surveillance and insurance, as well as cultural differences. Results reveal that despite existing regulations and the growing attention that is dedicated to Pb and metal occupational exposures, there are still hot spots for Pb exposure in Israel and Jordan. The contrasting experience found in the current study raises the possibility that information and technology exchange between the two countries Israel and Jordan, may be beneficial for improving occupational health policy in these two neighboring countries.  相似文献

Food is the major source of metal exposure for the nonsmoking general population. Food samples of plant and animal origin from Ismailia, Egypt, were analyzed for the content of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) using AAS. The Cr, Zn, and Cu concentrations were in the range of 1.7–249?µg?kg?1 wet weight (ww), 2–66?mg?kg?1?ww, and 0.5–3.46?mg?kg?1?ww, respectively. The mean daily intake of Cr, Zn, and Cu was 28.9?µg day?1, 8.55?mg day?1, and 1.7?mg day?1, respectively. The intake estimates are within the range of the recommended intake established internationally. Concentrations of Cd and Pb were in the range of 10–321?µg?kg?1?ww and 31–1200?µg?kg?1?ww, respectively. The weekly dietary intake for Cd and Pb (4.02 and 20.4?µg?kg?1 b.w, respectively) is lower than the FAO/WHO PTWI. Bread is the foodstuff that provided the highest rate of Pb and Cd (62 and 46% of the daily intake) to adults in Ismailia city.  相似文献

Pollution is a global problem which affects various human population functions. Despite the decline in plasma lead (Pb) levels among the general population during the past 20 years, this metal continues to be a public health concern for individuals with past and present exposures. The objective of this study was to determine blood lead levels (BPbL) in the staff of Dandy Zinc Company and compare them to control subjects. The test group included 40 staff of Dandy Zinc Company of Zanjan, while controls were selected from general population. Five milliliters of blood and plasma was sent to Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AOEI) reference lab to measure BPbL by Flameless Atomic Absorption. BPbL in test group (16.6 + 8.18 µg dL?1) was significantly higher than control (10.47 + 2.10 µg dL?1). In both groups BPbL was significantly higher in smokers than non-smokers. Blood lead levels in molding workers were significantly higher than other workers. BPbL in exposed workers were directly related to duration of work and age. Data indicate Pb exposure was of significant magnitude to be a public health concern especially in zinc-and Pb-related industries.  相似文献

Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive element which may cause toxicological or radiological hazards to the public if present in drinking water. This study reports the quantification of uranium in groundwater of major towns of the district Fatehabad, Haryana, India. Uranium concentrations ranged between 0.3 and 48 μg L?1. In 22% of the groundwater samples, uranium concentrations were higher than the World Health Organization maximum permissible limit of 30 µg L?1. The radiological dose for males was found to be in the range of 4.8?×?10?4–7.1?×?10?2 mSv y?1 and for females 3.5?×?10?4–5.2?×?10?2 mSv y?1. The results showed that due to the ingestion of groundwater in the study area, radiological cancer risk is in the range of 9.1?×?10?7–1.3?×?10?4, lower than the risk limit. Uranium ingestion from groundwater varied from 0.02 to 3.5 µg kg?1 day?1, which is within acceptable limit.  相似文献

This study was aimed to evaluate the comparative distribution, correlation and apportionment of selected elements (Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb and Zn) in the scalp hair of arthritis patients and healthy subjects. The hair samples collected from the patients (rheumatoid and osteoarthritis) and healthy donors were digested in nitric acid and perchloric acid mixture, followed by the quantification of trace elements using atomic absorption spectrometry. In the case of healthy donors, highest mean concentration was shown by Ca (3240?µg?g?1), followed by Mg (340?µg?g?1), Zn (192?µg?g?1), Fe (184?µg?g?1) and Pb (27?µg?g?1), whereas, the estimated average metal levels in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients were 3160, 290, 197, 61 and 23?µg?g?1, and 3090, 300, 182, 50 and 21?µg?g?1, respectively. Most of the elements revealed diverse and random distribution in the scalp hair of the donor groups. The correlation study pointed out significant disparities in the mutual relationships among the trace elements in the patients and controls. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis of the element data manifested diverse apportionment of the selected elements in the scalp hair of the patients compared with the healthy counterparts.  相似文献

In the context of use of marine algae as biological indicators of heavy metal pollution in coastal waters, six species of marine algae collected from the southwest coast of India were analysed for the levels of heavy metals (Ni, Cr, Sr, and Ag). Interspecies and interclass variations were determined on a spatial and temporal scale. The metal contents varied in the ranges, Ni: 0.20–21.06?µg?g?1 (mean?=?10.13?µg?g?1), Cr: non-detectable level (ND)–37.18?µg?g?1 (mean?=?13.86?µg?g?1), Sr: 2.19–103.90?µg?g?1 (mean =?29.40?µg?g?1), and Ag: ND–6.39?µg?g?1 (mean?=?1.80?µg?g?1). Ni and Cr contents were of similar magnitude to those reported for algae from polluted areas.  相似文献

Total mercury (HgTOT) concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS) for South African Highveld coals. The distribution of Hg in coals was investigated using a four-stage sequential leaching protocol and isotope dilution/gas chromatography coupled to ICP MS (ID-GC-ICP MS). The results show that HgTOT ranged from 144 to 303?µg?kg?1 with a mean of 199?±?26?µg?kg?1, while HgTOT leached from coals using different solvents ranged between 103 and 310?µg?kg?1 (mean: 218?±?60?µg?kg?1). Hg leaching rates of 53–78% were achieved in crushed coals. Hg0, Hg2+, and CH3Hg+ were identified in all coals. CH3Hg+ in studied coals ranged between 0.1 and 0.4 (mean: 0.2) µg?kg?1. GC ICP MS chromatograms also showed unknown Hg peaks which were identified as other organomercury species such as ethylmercury. Modes of occurrence of Hg in coals were variable with the organic-bound (37–40%) and the sulfide-bound (37–39%) being the dominant mercury forms. Increasing the HCl concentration in the used protocol increased the amount of Hg leached (16%) during this step.  相似文献

The average initial deposits of carbaryl were observed to be 1.4 and 3.1?mg?kg?1, respectively, following four applications of the insecticide at 4.95 and 9.9?kg active ingredient per hectare. Residues of carbaryl dissipated below its limit of quantification of 50?µg?kg?1 after 7 and 10 days at single and double the application dosage, respectively. The half-life values (t 1/2) of carbaryl were worked out to be 1.3 and 0.7 days, respectively, at single and double dosages. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) for carbaryl has been fixed at 8?µg?kg?1 body weight per day. Keeping in view the residues of carbaryl observed one day after the last application, a child of 10?kg and an adult of 60?kg will have an intake of 77 and 154?µg carbaryl after consumption of 100 and 200?g grapes, in comparison to its ADI of 80 and 480?µg; thus, no health risk is to be expected. Therefore, a waiting period of 1 day has been suggested for the safe consumption of carbaryl-treated grapes to avoid any health hazards.  相似文献

The concentrations of suspended particulate matter in the air of the Orissa Sand Complex had an average value of 128 ± 10 µg m?3 in residential areas and 170 ± 8 µg m?3 in mining areas. PM10 levels in residential areas were found to have an average of 35 ± 10 µg m?3, in mining areas 45 ± 10 µg m?3. The distribution of some elements is also discussed here. Inhalation doses were observed to be higher in summer than in winter and the rainy season. The highest dose rate was for the age group of 1 year, and health risks were found to be highest for the same. For adults, inhalation dose and health risk are 1.3 times higher in mining than in residential areas.  相似文献

The potentials of tropical weeds namely, Nephrolepis biserrata, Panicum maximum, Eleusine indica, and Chromolaena odorata to accumulate lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) from soil within the premises of an automobile battery manufacturing company in Ota, south-western Nigeria, were explored. The weed samples were collected in both wet and dry seasons. Standard analytical methods were employed to collect, digest, and analyze the weeds. Lead levels in the weeds for both seasons ranged from 1990–4870, 1090–1730, 4800–7890, and 400–1210 µg g?1 dry weight (DW) for Nephrolepis biserata, Panicum maximum, Eleusine indica, and Chromolaena odorata, respectively, while the cadmium level in the weeds for both seasons ranged from 3.92–6.78 µg g?1 DW for N. biserata, 1.99–6.85 µg g?1 DW for P. maximum, 2.90–7.40 µg g?1 DW for E. indica, and 2.90–5.09 µg g?1 DW for C. odorata. There was no significant difference in the accumulation of both Pb and Cd for the two seasons. All the weeds showed Pb levels higher than the phytotoxic range. On the contrary, 99% of the weeds showed Cd concentration within the phytotoxic range. The weeds demonstrate good phytoremediation potentials of contaminated soil.  相似文献

A Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) methacrylic acid (MAA) resin was used for preconcentration of lead at trace levels in water samples. For this purpose, a flow-injection, solid phase extraction method was developed for the determination of lead by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Lead ions were sorbed on a EGDMA–MAA column at pH 4, followed by an elution step using 288 µL of 4.0 M nitric acid solution and determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Optimum conditions for quantitative sorption involving the pH, sample volume, loading and elution flow rates, eluent type, and volume were investigated. A 868-fold enrichment factor could be reached. The detection limit for the water samples, estimated from the noise on the signal obtained for 250 mL of 10 µg L?1 loaded at 4.9 mL min?1 was 1.04 µg L?1. The method was applied for lead determination in river water samples collected in Edirne, Turkey. Recoveries of spiked solutions (10 µg L?1) to river water samples were quantitative. Finally, the method was validated by the analysis of certified reference material SRM 2704 (Buffalo River Sediment).  相似文献

A study was conducted on the Chironomus plumosus larvae to determine initiation of resistance to four pesticides – chlorfenvinphos, chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos-methyl, and malathion. First generational LC50 values were well within the threshold value for chironomids based upon the literature. Subsequent LC50 values were observed to increase, indicating a lessening of the toxicity of the pesticides to the chironomid. In the case of chlorfenvinphos, the 96 h LC50 for generations 1–23 was 6 µg L?1, in generations 3–7 was 8.57 µg L?1 and 11.14 µg L?1 for generations 8–9. Generations 10–12 had an LC50 value of 22.58 µg L?1 and generation 13 had an LC50 value of 35.08 µg L?1. Generation 14 had an LC50 value of 47.58 µg L?1. Generations 15–19 and 20–24 had 96 h LC50 values of 60.68 µg L?1, 72.58 µg L?1, 85.08 µg L?1, 97.58 µg L?1 and 110.08 µg L?1, respectively. Generations 25, 26 to 30, 31 to 38 and 39 to 45 had 96 h LC50 values of 160.42 µg L?1, 210.7 µg L?1, 262.24 µg L?1 and 274.36 µg L?1, respectively. The variation between LC50 values was found to be statistically significant. This was observed for most pesticides tested. Larval size and life cycle duration was observed to change from generation to generation with the body size decreasing markedly from 1 to 0.3 cm with life cycle increasing from 7 to 39 days.  相似文献

The cottage lead battery industry, industrial effluents, and lead paints were identified as possible factors for lead incidence in the study area. Lead may be associated with increased antisocial activities of the children living in western Uttar Pradesh. Children with elevated blls had poorer nutritional status than those with normal levels, and parents did not know that lead causes health problems. A national population-based study is recommended to determine the prevalence of elevated blls.  相似文献

There is a lack of information on arsenic metabolism in children exposed chronically to low levels of arsenic (<50 µg L?1). The objective of this study was to determine the methylation profile of urinary arsenic metabolites in children exposed to low-level concentrations of arsenic via their drinking water. A cross-sectional study was undertaken in 50 children from four towns in the Yaqui Valley, Sonora, with total arsenic values of 39.9, 16.8, 7.3, and 5.5 µg L?1 in their drinking water, respectively. First morning void samples were analyzed for inorganic-As (InAs), mono and dimethyl arsenic (MMA and DMA). The total arsenic excreted in urine ranged from 23.1 to 99.1 µg L?1 and these levels did not vary by sex. Children with the highest level of total arsenic in their drinking water excreted the highest amount in urine and the length of residence and age also had significant contribution. Children with a lower range of arsenic exposure (16.8–5.5 µg L?1) had similar amounts of arsenic in urine with values of 23.1, 28.2, and 32.6 µg L?1, respectively. DMA had the highest proportion in urine (52.1–74.7%), followed by InAs (16.3–34.9%) and MMA (4.4–8.4%). Compared to other reports, these children excreted a low %MMA (6.1%), and children from the towns with the lowest levels of arsenic had the highest %InAs and the lowest %DMA. This variability in arsenic methylation was partially explained by arsenic concentration in drinking water, years of residence and age, and may reflect genetic differences or more contribution from different exposure routes. In conclusion, our results show that at low levels of exposure the children's ability to metabolize InAs did not have a linear association with the levels of arsenic, and overall children from the Yaqui Valley excrete a lower %MMA than expected.  相似文献

The Kasargod District is the northernmost district of Kerala State and is bound between the north latitudes 12°02′27″ and 12°47′35″ and east longitudes 74°51′54″ and 75°25′25″. The present study highlights the contamination levels of organochlorine pesticides in open wells of the Kasargod District from 2010 to 2011. Maximum contamination of organochlorine pesticides (OCP's) was observed for endosulfan followed by hexachlorobenzene (BHC). Contamination levels of α-endosulfan were higher at Panathur (58?µg?L?1) and next to Periya (37?µg?L?1) in the postmonsoon season of 2010. During premonsoon 2011, the residue levels of α-endosulfan were higher at Panathady (56?µg?L?1) followed by Rajapuram (40?µg?L?1). Contamination levels of the BHC isomers exhibit the order of γ-BHC?>?α-BHC?>?β‐BHC, showing that γ-BHC represents 62% of the total OCP residues in premonsoon 2010. Among the studied OCP's, concentration levels of DDT were below detection limit. Maximum concentrations of the sum of all OCP residues were observed at Mulleria and Cheemeni (premonsoon 2010), followed by Panathur and Periya (postmonsoon 2010), and lowest in Panathady and Rajapuram (premonsoon 2011). Residues of OCP's were lowest in Paettikundu and Cheravatur in all the three seasons.  相似文献

Cattle treatment with antiparasitic drugs is associated with an important risk exposure for dung beetles. Previous studies demonstrated the impact of some avermectin and pyrethroid compounds on several species such as Onthophagus gazella and Neomyia cornicina. However, little information is available regarding the elimination of these compounds in faeces 8 days after a pour-on administration in dairy cows. The present study, utilising a dairy cow model with cypermethrin treatment, demonstrated that concentrations in dry faeces can reach levels of 5?mg?kg?1 between the first and fourth day after treatment and were present up to 3 months after a single dose of administration at a concentration around 10?µg?kg?1. Faecal samples were purified with three successive columns (silica gel, anion exchange phase, and basic alumina) and analysed by GC-MS. The limit of quantification of this method was 0.5?µg?kg?1. The high sensitivity of the method permitted one to see that the risk exposure of cypermethrin to dung beetles is longer than what was noted in the literature. According to other studies, repeated treatment with such agents may lead to the local extinction of dung beetles. Even if the impact of pyrethroid largely depends on the conditions of the ecosystem where the treated cattle are living, adverse effects of these agents may still occur.  相似文献
