Feeding behaviors of the gastropods Batillaria zonalis, a suspension and deposit feeder, and Cerithideopsilla cingulata, an obligate deposit feeder, were studied to examine their effect on dynamics of suspended materials, total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC) in sediments. Suspension feeding in B. zonalis was observed in detail visually, as it had been previously unreported. An experimental system where B. zonalis and C. cingulata were cultured for 10 weeks, using previously frozen microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata as food, was then constructed. During feeding observations, the suspension-feeding B. zonalis formed a mucus food cord to entangle particulate materials, which were subsequently ingested. The feeding mode of B. zonalis is hence categorized as ctenidial filter feeding. For the culture experiments, decreases in suspended materials were seen only in the B. zonalis cultures, while the control (no gastropods) and C. cingulata cultures remained nearly unchanged. Sediment TN and TOC showed no significant differences between B. zonalis (with mean TN at 0.0345% and mean TOC at 0.261%) and control cultures (with TN at 0.0389% and TOC at 0.331%), but the sediments in C. cingulata cultures had lower levels (with TN at 0.0204% and TOC at 0.156%). The C/N ratios were similar for both B. zonalis (7.55) and C. cingulata (7.68) cultures, and both were lower than the control cultures (8.55). The filtration rate for B. zonalis was lower than that previously observed in bivalves inhabiting the same intertidal flat (e.g. Cyclina sinensis, Grafrarium tumidum and Barbatia virescens). However, Batillaria zonalis occurs at higher abundances than these bivalves. Therefore, it is expected that this species has a large affect upon the transport of suspended materials to the sediments. The addition of TN and TOC to sediments in B. zonalis cultures was probably caused by biodeposition, but deposit feeding by B. zonalis may have restrained the accumulation of those components. The impact of deposit feeding in Cerithideopsilla cingulata cultures was most probably stronger than sedimentation and biodeposition, because of the lower sediment TN and TOC. Bioturbation by both B. zonalis and C. cingulata yields the same effect on sediment quality, as indicated by the low C/N in the culture sediment of both treatments, despite difference in feeding modes. This paper demonstrates, for the first time, the importance of gastropods in bioturbation and removal of suspended materials in subtropical tidal flat habitats.Communicated by T. Food selection by laboratory-reared larvae of scaled sardines Harengula pensacolae, and bay anchovies Anchoa mitchilli, was compared. Natural plankton was fed to the larvae during the 22 days following hatching. Food levels in the rearing tanks were maintained at an average of 1,600 to 1,800 potential food organisms per liter. Larvae of both species selected as food copepod nauplii, copepodites, and copepods; initial feeding was on organisms of 50 to 75 body width. Larvae of H. pensacolae averaged 4.2 mm in total length at hatching and those of A. mitchilli about 2.0 mm. H. pensacolae larvae grew about 1.0 mm per day and A. mitchilli 0.70 mm per day. The mean number of food organisms in each digestive tract was greater in H. pensacolae than in A. mitchilli, and the difference in number increased as the larvae grew. Average size of food organisms eaten increased for both species with growth, because of selection by the larvae; the average size of copepodites and copepods in digestive tracts increased at a faste rate in H. pensacolae than A. mitchilli. A. mitchilli longer than 8 mm did not eat copepod nauplii.Contribution No. 170, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Tropical Atlantic Biological laboratory, Miami, Florida 33149, USA.  相似文献

The life history of Haloa japonica (Pilsbry), especially the seasonality of growth and reproduction, was investigated from 1992 to 1995 on a flat rocky shore exposed at low tide at Kattoshi, Hakodate Bay, Japan. To estimate the effect of environmental seasonality on growth rate, we conducted two sets of field cage experiments in which algal food was controlled. H. japonica was shown to have an annual life cycle. Spawning occurred from late April to mid-July. Recruitment occurred in June. Simultaneously, large adults disappeared from the habitat. A rapid increase in wet weight of H. japonica was observed in early spring, and coincided with the bloom of the membranous green alga, Monostroma angicava. Under field cage experiments, individuals feeding on both M. angicava and Polysiphonia japonica grew faster than those feeding on only P. japonica. Growth rates of H. japonica feeding on only P. japonica, however, did not vary from February to April. These results suggest that seasonal variation in the algal community limits the growth of H. japonica in early spring at Kattoshi. This factor is relatively more important as a limiting factor on the growth of H. japonica than the physical environment in this season.  相似文献

Egg production rates of Calanus glacialis (Jaschnov) were measured in the laboratory (in 1985) and in the field (in 1983–1984). In the laboratory, daily egg production was studied over one month at alternating feeding and fasting conditions. Spawning ceased after 3 d of starvation and started as soon as females were reintroduced to food. Egg production increased stepwise at 3-d intervals. Females survived more than nine months in captivity. In the field, egg production was measured during PREMIZEX 1983 and MIZEX 1984 at 5 and 16 stations, respectively. High egg production was found in polynyas on the East Greenland Shelf, where melt water induced stratification which supported a spring bloom. Highest egg production was converted into 6.1% body carbon female-1 d-1. Under thick pack-ice no eggs were spawned. Spawning was induced in females from a station with low food abundance by feeding them on board ship. These results from both experiments and field studies show that egg production in C. glacialis is closely related to food availability. Thus, C. glacialis exhibits a reproductive behavior similar to that of C. finmarchicus, but not C. hyperboreus, the other two dominant species in this region.  相似文献

From the observations on two species of fiddler crabs, droving is conspicuous in Uca vocans vocans but does not occur in U. lactea perplexa. U. vocans come down to feed at the water's edge with a richer food supply and fine substrate particles. Droving is advantageous to increase feeding efficiency in this species which holds burrows on a relatively sandy habitat where the food supply is less rich. In U. lactea, which burrows at higher levels, on the other hand, the food supply and soil texture of their burrow area are not significantly different from those at the water's edge. Home range relationships of both species are consistent with the occurrence or not of droving behavior and depend on food productivity of burrowing habitats.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of the herring Clupea harengus L. and the sprat C. sprattus (L.) as 0-group and older fish in inshore waters of the west coast of Scotland, were studied from April, 1970 to March, 1972. The two species occurred together. The diets of 0-group herring and sprats are almost identical, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Their daily feeding rhythms also coincide. It is probable that competition between these two species in their first year of life could occur if the food supply is limiting. Changes in diet between 0-group and older fish are more pronounced in herring than in sprats. The diet itself is mainly crustacean in both clupeids, with copepods contributing the major share.  相似文献

Most spionid polychaetes switch from deposit feeding to suspension feeding as current speed and the flux of suspended food increase. Growth rates of juvenile Polydora cornuta are strongly affected by flow and can be as rapid as 60% day−1 in moderate currents. Feeding palps that extend above the sediment–water interface during suspension feeding are especially vulnerable to sublethal predation, but individuals with damaged posteriors are also common. We performed a series of laboratory flume experiments to test the effects of sublethal tissue damage on the growth and regeneration rates of P. cornuta juveniles. Replicated experiments were conducted at three flow speeds in counter-rotating annular flumes containing field-collected sediment and a nonliving algal slurry as deposited and suspended food. In the first set of experiments, we removed 2, 1, or 0 of worms’ two feeding palps and measured the relative growth rates of worm bodies and palps after 3 days in the flumes. Worms that lost both palps grew significantly slower than the other two groups, but the growth rate of worms that had one undamaged palp was not significantly different from worms that had two undamaged palps. Faster flow speeds significantly increased rates of body growth, and there was a significant interaction between flow and the effect of palp loss. During the 3-day experiments, damaged palps fully regenerated and often grew larger than they were prior to being removed. Damaged palps also grew significantly faster than undamaged palps. The second set of experiments tested the effects of removing a worm’s posterior region (~18% of body volume). The growth rates of these damaged and undamaged worms did not differ significantly. By the end of a 3-day flume experiment, damaged worms had grown 6× larger than they were prior to the posterior damage. The rapid regeneration of damaged palps and posterior tissue in moderate flows that allow suspension feeding suggests that sublethal predation on spionids might be more frequent than previously estimated and will have little impact on the growth of juvenile recruits.  相似文献

Increasing dietary specialization is an inherently risky strategy because it increases a species’ vulnerability to resource depletion. However, risks associated with dietary specialization may be offset by increased performance when feeding on preferred prey. Although rarely demonstrated, highly specialized species are expected to outperform generalists when feeding on their preferred prey, whereas generalists are predicted to have more similar performance across a range of different prey. To test this theory, we compared the growth rates of two obligate coral-feeding butterflyfishes (Chaetodon trifascialis and Chaetodon plebeius) maintained on exclusive diets of preferred vs nonpreferred prey. In the field, C. trifascialis was the most specialized species, feeding almost exclusively on just one coral species, Acropora hyacinthus. C. plebeius meanwhile, was much less specialized, but fed predominantly on Pocillopora damicornis. During growth experiments, C. trifascialis grew fastest when feeding on A. hyacinthus and did not grow at all when feeding on less preferred prey (P. damicornis and Porites cylindrica). C. plebeius performed equally well on both A. hyacinthus and P. damicornis (its preferred prey), but performed poorly when feeding on P. cylindrica. Both butterflyfishes select coral species that maximize juvenile growth, but contrary to expectations, the more specialized species (C. trifascialis) did not outperform the generalist species (C. plebeius) when both consumed their preferred prey. Increased dietary specialization, therefore, appears to be a questionable strategy, as there was no evidence of any increased benefits to offset increases in susceptibility to disturbance.  相似文献

The sea urchin strongylocentrotus drobachiensis exhibited a high degree of food selectivity, whether foods were presented singly or in combination. Foods ranked from most to least preferred were, in summer, Laminaria longicruris, Chondrus crispus, Corallina officinalis, Ascophyllum nodosum, and Agarum cribrosum, whereas in winter A. nodosum and A. cribrosum exchanged ranks. Food preference was not correlated with caloric content but, because of higher feeding rates on preferred foods, caloric intake was positively correlated with preference. Similarly, food absorption rankings were not correlated with food preference, with the exception of gravimetric efficiencies in winter. However, the absorption of L. longicruris, the most preferred alga, was highest in all measurements. Growth and reproductive development of S. drobachiensis on single species diets were positively correlated with food preference. Highest values occurred with animals fed L. longicruris. Urchins transferred from non-preferred to preferred diets showed increased somatic and reproductive growth compared to control animals on the original, non-preferred diets. Conversely, when transferred from preferred to non-preferred diets, urchins showed reduced growth compared to controls. No combination diet tested supported significantly better gonadal growth than L. longicruris: 25% C. crispus supported slightly better somatic growth than L. longicruris alone. These data support the view that S. drobachiensis has evolved a feeding strategy resulting in the maximization of growth and reproduction.  相似文献

We maintained 30 to 35 mm sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) on 17 different macroalgal diets in the field over a 130-d period and correlated the resulting changes in somatic and gonadal tissues with measures of food preferences. The varions algae fell into there distinct categories according to their ability to support growth. The most striking effect of diet was on gonadal mass, there being a 14-fold increase for the best algal diet, compared to initial gonadal mass, and nearly a threefold decrease for the worst diet. The relation of food preference to somatic growth was nonlinear. A sharp increase in the growth of test diameter, total mass and test mass occurred between the nonpreferred and intermediately preferred algae, but growth rates were similar for intermediate and preferred algae. Gonadal growth tended to increase exponentially with an important measure of food preference, feeding rate (g ingested d–1). These observations suggested that urchins only channel food resources into somatic growth up to a given point, additional reserves being used for producing gametes. The positive relationship of food preference to growth, and especially the strong correlation with gonadal production, indicates that the highly selective feeding of the urchin contributes to ils fitness.  相似文献

To elucidate the life history of neustonic animals, growth and reproductive patterns were investigated in the hermaphroditic pedunculate barnacle Lepas anserifera in field and laboratory experiments in Wakayama, western Japan from 2006 to 2008. The effects of temperature (19, 24 or 29°C) and food availability (once or twice a week) on growth and reproduction were also studied in the laboratory. The barnacles grew and matured rapidly, especially in the field: individuals on the average grew from 3 mm to more than 12 mm in capitulum length within 15 days and some were brooding. High temperature and high food availability resulted in greater growth. High temperature also resulted in earlier maturation of both testes and ovaries, whereas the effect of food availability was less clear. The rapid growth and maturation, together with earlier maturation at higher temperatures, may be an adaptation to ephemeral floating objects to which they attach.  相似文献

Five species of tintinnids, Amphorella quadrilineata (Claparède and Lachmann, 1858), Tintinnopsis cf. beroidea Stein (1867), T. cf. acuminata Daday (1887), Eutintinnus pectinis (Kofoid and Campbell, 1929), and Helicostomella subulata (Ehrenberg, 1833), were isolated from Southern California coastal waters and maintained in laboratory cultures which were used to investigate, several aspects of the feeding dynamics and population growth rates of this group of planktonic ciliates. Data are most complete for the latter three species. Both E. pectinis and H. subulata displayed ingestion and growth rates which increased with increasing food concentration until a maximum rate was obtained which then remained essentially constant as food levels increased further. Maximum hourly ingestion was equivalent to approximately 10 to 20% of the body weight of the tintinnids. T. cf. acuminata showed no such maximum ingestion rate, as ingestion rates increased throughout the entire range of food concentrations used. The dependence of growth rate of T. cf. acuminata on food concentration also differed from the other species, being characterized by a broad region of maximum growth at intermediate food levels with reduced growth at both lower and higher food concentrations. Maximum observed growth rates represented doubling times of approximately 12 h for both E. pectinis and T. cf. acuminata and 24 h for H. subulata. The data suggested gross growth efficiencies exceeding 50% over much of the range of food concentrations used. No strong evidence supporting the existence of feeding thresholds or switching behavior was collected during these experiments, although apparently selective feeding was observed in one experiment with E. pectinis.  相似文献

Growth and condition (both somatic and hepatosomatic index) of Atlantic cod spawning at different locations around Iceland was studied in relation to the Pan I locus. South of Iceland cod carrying the Pan IAB and Pan IBB genotypes were more frequent while cod carrying the Pan IAA genotype was more frequent north of Iceland. Differences in growth were detected between cod spawning at different areas around Iceland. Cod spawning south of Iceland grew faster than cod spawning north of Iceland. Differences in growth rate were also observed among cod carrying different Pan I genotypes within a spawning area. The least frequent Pan I genotype expressed the highest growth in both south and north of Iceland. Cod carrying the Pan IAA grew fastest at spawning locations south of Iceland, while cod carrying the Pan IBB genotype grew fastest in north of Iceland. A consistent relationship between condition and the different Pan I genotypes was also observed in all the areas. Cod carrying the Pan IAA expressed the highest somatic condition and the lowest hepatosomatic index. Together, these results indicate that the relation of growth and condition with the Pan I locus is more complicated than earlier thought and is likely to be influenced by other factors, like size-selective fishing and food supply.  相似文献

The feeding biology of the echinoid Tripneustes gratilla from a seagrass bed off Toliara, on the south-west coast of Madagascar, was investigated during the summer and winter seasons. Repletion indices of the gut of T. gratilla varied seasonally, in such a way that higher amounts of food occurred in the gut in winter than in other seasons. Conversely, a more detailed analysis of one summer and one winter sample of the gut tissue dry weights revealed higher weights in summer (February) than in winter (August). This was interpreted as a varying capability of nutrient storage and closely related to the feeding activity of the echinoid. This inverse relationship between feeding activity and nutrient storage was suggested to be dependent on gonadal growth. Indeed, higher food consumption was observed during the post-spawning period (August), that is, when most of the energy accumulated was used up for gonadal growth. Low feeding activity occurred when a sufficient amount of energy was accumulated in gut tissues (February), the time corresponding to the initiation of gonadal growth. Investigations on the feeding habits, using Ivlev's electivity index, revealed preferential feeding of T. gratilla on Syringodium isoetifolium, the dominant seagrass species found in the gut. This was partly related to the higher availability of that particular seagrass species in the field. However, its soft and terete leaf blade's morphology also makes it easier to manipulate and ingest. Studies on the feeding behaviour indicated the presence of a diel feeding cycle in T. gratilla individuals in both summer and winter seasons. Yet, its pattern varied between the two studied months (one summer and one winter) as the cycle was less contrasted during period of active feeding, i.e. in winter compared to summer. This study provides novel information on how intrinsic factors, such as physiological state, can govern the feeding activity of T. gratilla living in a seagrass habitat.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships and genetic population structures were analyzed for tideland gastropods in the genus Cerithidea around Japan on the basis of partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene. Large genetic divergence was shown between individuals of Cerithidea cingulata in the southern Ryukyus and those in the central Ryukyus and the Japanese Islands. Haplotypes of C. cingulata from the Japanese Islands were paraphyletic with the exclusion of a monophyletic group from the central Ryukyus. Genetic differentiation of C. cingulata was also detected between Amami-Oshima Island and Okinawajima Island. No genetic divergence was found between Cerithidea rhizophorarum in the Japanese Islands and its subspecies C. rhizophorarum morchii in the Ryukyu Islands. The lack of genetic divergence of Cerithidea largillierti between continental China and Japan suggests relatively recent migration between the Japanese Islands and the Asian continent. For all three Cerithidea species distributed in both the Japanese Islands and the Ryukyu Islands, the Tokara Gap and the Kerama Gap were shown to have acted as barriers to the dispersal.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationship requires adequate understanding of the interactions among species in a community. Effects of species diversity on ecosystem functioning are usually considered more pronounced with increasing functional dissimilarity, although species within functional groups may also perform non-identical functions and interact with each other. Here we present results of a laboratory experimental study aimed at elucidating whether interspecific interactions among species within a single nematode trophic group, bacterivores, (1) affect population development and community structure, and (2) depend on food availability. We studied the population growth of Rhabditis (Pellioditis) marina, a rhabditid nematode known to favour very high food densities when in monoculture, and of Diplolaimelloides meyli and D. oschei, congeneric Monhysteridae known to perform better in monocultures at intermediate food availability. Both Diplolaimelloides species showed significantly different patterns of food-density dependence in combination culture compared to monoculture. At very high food availability, the rhabditid nematode facilitated growth of both monhysterid species, probably as a result of down-regulation of bacterial density. At the lowest food availabilities, the presence of even low numbers of monhysterid nematodes lead to exclusion of the rhabditid, which at such low food availability has a very inefficient food uptake. At intermediate food availabilities, abundances of both Diplolaimelloides species were strongly depressed in the combination culture, as a result of food depletion by the rhabditid, indirect inhibitory interactions between the two congeneric species, or both. The complexity of the species interactions render predictions on the outcome and functional consequences of changes in within-trophic-group diversity highly problematic.  相似文献

Littoraria cingulata (Philippi, 1846) is a Western Australian, mangrove littorine snail, represented by two morphologically distinct subspecies, whose distributions are separated by >300 km. The southern subspecies, L. cingulata pristissini, is distinguished from the northern subspecies, L. cingulata cingulata, by having a thinner, keelless shell with more primary grooves, and lower and much more numerous ribs. In contrast with these striking differences, L. cingulata cingulata is morphologically very similar to another species, L. sulculosa, with which it also shares a nearly coincident geographic range. Allozyme comparisons at 22 presumptive loci confirmed a large genetic distance between L. cingulata and L. sulculosa, and the apparent conspecificity of the morphologically divergent subspecies of L. cingulata. Based on geological evidence, the geographical separation of the morphologically divergent forms of L. cingulata has developed within the past 5000 to 10 000 yr. The extensive continuous distribution of the northern subspecies, L. cingulatacingulata, and the large geographic disjunction between the northern and Shark Bay subspecies, L. cingulata pristissini, allowed a test of the genetic importance of this relatively recent disjunction. Within the continuous distribution of the two subspecies, a pattern of isolation by distance was visible up to distances of 300 km. Beyond 300 km, genetic subdivision, measured by pairwise G ST (the proportion of genetic diversity due to differences between populations), averaged 0.028, whereas subdivision between Shark Bay and northern populations averaged 0.055 over the same range of distances. Although the relative paucity of barriers to gene flow tends to limit genetic subdivision in marine species with planktotrophic larvae, the results for L. cingulata suggest that subdivision can occur within a continuous distribution, but that special events leading to major disjunctions can substantially increase divergence, even over a relatively short period of time. Effects of sheltering fish on growth of their host corals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Stony corals are the foundation species of tropical reefs, and their structures can harbor a diverse range of mutualist taxa that can confer important benefits, including provision of nutrients. Prominent among the associates of branching coral in the genus Pocillopora are groups of zooplanktivorous damselfishes that take refuge in the coral to avoid their predators. In field and laboratory experiments, we explored the effects of colonies of resident damselfishes on growth of their host corals. Laboratory studies revealed a positive relationship between biomass of fish and output of ammonium. In the field, levels of ammonium were significantly elevated in the water surrounding the branches of Pocillopora occupied by colonies of damselfish, particularly in time periods following active feeding by the fish. Experimental manipulation of the presence of fish on host corals during a month-long field experiment revealed that corals hosting fish grew significantly more than those that lacked fish, and coral growth was positively correlated with the biomass of resident fish. The Pocillopora colonies in the field experiment varied in the degree of openness of their branching structure, and dye studies indicated that this affected their ability to retain waterborne nutrients. Together with biomass of resident fish, colony openness explained 76% of the variation in coral growth rate during the experiment. Corals can exhibit considerable morphological variability, and mutualistic fish respond to colony architecture during habitat selection, with some species preferring more open-branched forms. This makes it likely that corals may face tradeoffs in attracting resident fish and in retaining the nutrients they provide.  相似文献

Curves relating instantaneous growth rate to aerial exposure were determined for six species of bivalves in laboratory and shore experiments. A dimensionless index equatable with the relative intertidal growth performance of a species was calculated by integration of the growth curve after converting both growth rate and aerial exposure to decimal fractions. Intertidal growth performance of the bivalves tested corresponded well with their natural levels of occurrence on the shore, and improved in the following order: Modiolus modiolus < Argopecten irradians < Ostrea edulis < Mytilus edulis < Crassostrea virginica. Geukensia demissa, for which an index value could not be determined, grew faster intertidally than subtidally. The relative contributions made to intertidal growth performance by energy-conserving and energy-supplementing capacity adaptations were assessed by resolving the growth curves into energy-input and energy-loss components. The rate of energy loss due to intertidal exposure was lower in the high-shore species, and also less affected by harsher subaerial conditions, than in the low-shore species. Moreover, M. edulis and C. virginica showed abilities to supplement energy input such that growth per unit immersion time was better at certain intertidal levels than subtidally. Energy conservation and supplementation in these forms made roughly equal contributions to their improved intertidal growth relative to species occurring lower on the shore.  相似文献

Summary Observed changes in maternal investment due to an environmentally induced decrease in food supply (the 1983 El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation) are compared witha priori predictions for the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). Changes in behavior, growth and mortality of off-spring were also examined. Data collected in the first two months postpartum for the years before (PRE), during (EN), and the two years after (POST1 and POST2) the 1983 El Ni?o indicate that females initiated postpartum feeding trips earlier during the food shortage, and spent more time away on individual feeding trips in both the El Ni?o year and the year after. Perinatal sex ratios (♀:♂) in the years PRE, EN, POST1 and POST2 were 1:1, 1.4:1, 1.1:1 and 1:1.4, respectively. Fewer copulations were observed during the El Ni?o year, but this difference was not statistically significant. Pups spent less time suckling in the food shortage year and the year following, but attempted to sneak suckle more. Pups were less active and played on land less in the El Ni?o and following year. Finally, maternal investment as measured by milk intake of offspring was decreased, pups grew more slowly, and suffered increased mortality during the food shortage year. Despite expected sex differences in maternal investment and pup behavior in response to food shortage, there were no sex-biased differences in response in either females or pups. As expected, the food shortage did not affect adult males since they migrate north during the non-breeding season where the environmental perturbation was less severe.  相似文献
