Calling characteristics of parasitized and unparasitized populations of the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Examination of three populations of the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus revealed the presence of an acoustically-orienting parasitoid fly, Ormia ochracea (Tachinidae), in the population of crickets that has been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands. The cricket is native to Australia and the Pacific, and the fly is native to North America but has also been introduced to Hawaii. Up to 27% of males and 7% of females in Hawaii were infested with fly larvae. Song structure in the parasitized Hawaiian population was distinct from that of the other two groups, with the Hawaiian crickets showing several reduced song parameters. In addition, onset and cessation of calling at dusk and dawn were more abrupt in the Hawaiian population. These results are consistent with selective pressure from the phonotactic flies to decrease risky calling. Silent males were present in all three populations, suggesting that these noncallers may not represent a unique adaptation to the parasitoid.

Social experience can elicit phenotypically plastic changes in mate choice, but little is known about the degree to which
social information from one modality can influence mating decisions based on information from a different modality. I used
the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus to test whether experience of chemical cues mimicking a high density of sexually mature males causes changes in mate choice
based on acoustic signals. T. oceanicus males produce long-range calling songs to attract females for mating, but they also produce waxy, non-volatile hydrocarbons
on their cuticle (CHCs) which, when deposited on a substrate, can be detected by females and may provide demographic information.
I manipulated female experience of substrate-bound male CHCs and then performed acoustic mate choice trials. When CHCs were
present on the substrate during trials, females showed greater motivation to respond to male calling song. This effect diminished
with repeated exposure to male songs, demonstrating that the importance of olfactory cues in altering acoustic mate choice
decreased with increasing exposure to acoustic signals. However, the temporal nature of CHC experience mattered: previous
experience of CHCs did not alter subsequent female choice for male calling song traits. Exposure to male song increased the
threshold of mate acceptance over time, and individuals varied considerably in overall levels of responsiveness. Taken together,
the results demonstrate that mate choice is dependent on social context mediated by multiple modalities in T. oceanicus, but they do not support the idea that prior experience of social cues in one modality necessarily influences later mating
decisions based on other signalling modalities. 相似文献

We examined multiple mate choice criteria in Cophixalus ornatus, a terrestrial breeding, microhylid frog. Mate choice consisted of three stages: mate attraction (male calling), courtship
(male behavior between the call site and the nest), and nest site selection by the female. For male C. ornatus, the possession of a call with low dominant frequency relative to calling neighbors increased the probability that they would
attract females. Dominant frequency was negatively correlated with age independent of male mass and snout vent length. When
escorting the female from the call site to their nest, males traveled along more convoluted paths than when returning to the
nest alone. The convolution of the path was, therefore, considered an aspect of courtship. Females released eggs into nests
with structural characteristics typical of nests constructed by older males. Thus, females increased their chances of locating
an acceptable nest by preferentially approaching males with lower dominant frequencies. This study is the first to demonstrate
that age, independent of mass or snout-vent length, can influence call characteristics in anurans, and it is also the first
to demonstrate the importance of male age to female mate choice in an amphibian. 相似文献

Summary. Females of both species start their pheromone-releasing activity on the second day after emergence at the beginning of the
photophase. During the present work, a peak of calling activity with close to 100% of active Ph. nigrescentella females was registered 1.5 hour after the light had been put on. The high pheromone release behaviour with 50% active females
lasted for 3 hours. The calling activity of the group of females was about 6 h/day. The beginning of a photophase under laboratory
conditions or an early morning in nature is a common period for sex pheromone release in the genus Phyllonorycter. (8Z,10E)-tetradecadien-1-yl acetate (8Z,10E-14:Ac), (8Z,10E)-tetradecadien-1-ol (8Z,10E-14:OH) and (8E,10Z)-tetradecadien-1-yl acetate (8E,10Z-14:Ac) in the ratio 96:4:traces as well as 8Z,10E-14:Ac and 8Z,10E-14:OH in the ratio 88:12 collected by Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) were found to be specific for the calling periods
of virgin Phyllonorycter insignitella and Ph. nigrescentella females respectively. Field trapping experiments demonstrated that all three compounds are important for the attraction of
Ph. insignitella males while only 8Z,10E-14:Ac is the essential sex pheromone component for Ph. nigrescentella. The pheromone activity of all three compounds is reported for the first time. Addition of either 8Z,10E-14:OH or 8E,10Z-14:Ac to 8Z,10E-14:Ac did not have a significant effect on the attraction of Ph. nigrescentella males, while the efficiency of the three component blend was 5 times lower as compared to that of 8Z,10E-14:Ac. Our data demonstrate that 8Z,10E-14:OH and 8E,10Z-14:Ac play a dual function, they are minor sex pheromone components of Ph. insignitella essential for attraction of conspecific males and show an allelochemical, antagonistic effect on Ph. nigrescentella males and, thus, ensuring specificity of the mate location signal in two related Phyllonorycter species. 相似文献

The parsnip webworm, Depressaria pastinacella, specializes on wild parsnip, Pastinaca sativa, and several species of Heracleum, hostplants rich in toxic furanocoumarins. Rates of furanocoumarin metabolism in this species are among the highest known
for any insect. Within its native range in Europe, webworms are heavily parasitized by the polyembryonic parasitoid wasp Copidosoma sosares. In this study, we determined whether these parasitoids are exposed to furanocoumarins in host hemolymph, whether they can
metabolize furanocoumarins, and whether parasitism influences the ability of webworms to detoxify furanocoumarins. Hemolymph
of webworms fed artificial diet containing 0.3 % fresh weight xanthotoxin, a furanocoumarin prevalent in wild parsnip hosts,
contained trace amounts of this toxin; as well, hemolymph of webworms consuming P. sativa flowers and fruits contained trace amounts of six of seven furanocoumarins present in the hostplant. Thus, parasitoids likely
encounter furanocoumarins in host hemolymph. Assays of xanthotoxin metabolism in C. sosares failed to show any ability to metabolize this compound. Parasitized webworms, collected from populations of Heracleum sphondylium in the Netherlands in 2004, were on average 55 % larger by weight than unparasitized individuals. This weight is inclusive
of host and parasitoid masses. Absolute rates of detoxification (nmoles min−1) of five different furanocoumarins were indistinguishable between parasitized and unparasitized ultimate instars, suggesting
that the intrinsic rates of metabolism are fixed. Thus, although parasitized larvae are larger, detoxification rates are not
commensurate with size; rates in parasitized larvae expressed per gram of larval mass were 25 % lower than in unparasitized

New repellent semiochemicals for three species of

Summary. Nine compounds identified from captured
volatiles of the Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae,
the mountain pine beetle, D. ponderosae, and the
spruce beetle, D. rufipennis, that elicited antennal responses
in males and females of one or more of these species were
tested in the field to determine behavioural activity.
1-Octen-3-ol, found in the volatiles of females of all three
species decreased the response of male and female coastal
and male interior D. pseudotsugae and both sexes of D. ponderosae
to their aggregation pheromones. Acetophenone,
identified in the volatiles of females of all three species,
significantly decreased the response of interior female
D. pseudotsugae. trans-Verbenol, a potent aggregation
pheromone of D. ponderosae, decreased the response of both
sexes of D. pseudotsugae, while 3-methyl-2-cyclohexen-1-
one (MCH), the antiaggregation pheromone of D. pseudotsugae
and D. rufipennis decreased the response of both sexes
of D. ponderosae. While it has been demonstrated that semiochemical
mediated interspecific communication occurs
among bark beetles infesting the same host, this study
demonstrates that beetles can perceive signals emitted by
heterospecifics attacking nonhosts and can potentially use

Intensive study of arboreal forest-dwelling primates and their predators in Africa is increasingly revealing that crowned
eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) are major predators of primates. Gray-cheeked mangabeys (Lophocebus albigena) are overrepresented in the diets of crowned eagles in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and adult male mangabeys are represented
more than females. We focused on the behavior of adult male gray-cheeked mangabeys living in social groups in Kibale National
Park (1) to clarify the interactions between mangabeys and eagles that might put adult males at greater risk and (2) to better
understand individual variation in behavioral responses to predators. Adult male mangabeys in five groups responded to observer-confirmed
presence of crowned eagles 88 times over a 13-month period. While all males gave alarm calls, only the highest-ranking male
in each of four groups chased eagles. These males had elevated levels of fecal cortisol metabolites in the days immediately
after they engaged in active defense, suggesting that they perceived such behavior as risky. In the one group where male ranks
were unstable and there were no infants, no male was observed to chase eagles. We suggest that males pursue the dangerous
tactic of chasing eagles only when they are likely to have offspring in the group. Males in larger groups also spent less
time alarm calling to crowned eagles (from first to last call in a group), and our observations confirmed that the duration
of their alarm calls was related to eagle presence. Thus, eagles spent less time around larger mangabey groups. Alarm calling
by adult male mangabeys may signal to this ambush predator that it has been detected and should move on. 相似文献

In many species, seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) affect female post-mating behavioral patterns, including sperm storage, egg
laying, feeding, and remating. Yet, few studies have investigated the patterns of allocation, depletion, and replenishment
of SFPs in male animals, despite the importance of these proteins to male and female reproductive success. To investigate
such SFP dynamics, it is necessary to have a sensitive method for quantifying SFP levels in males and mated females. We developed
such a method by adapting the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using anti-SFP antibodies. Here, we first use two
Drosophila melanogaster SFPs (ovulin and sex peptide) to demonstrate that ELISAs provide accurate measures of SFP levels. We find that, consistent
with previous data from Western blotting or immunofluorescence studies, levels of both ovulin and sex peptide decline in the
mated female with time since mating, but they do so at different rates. We then use ELISAs to show that males become depleted
of SFPs with repeated matings, but that previously mated males are able to transfer “virgin” levels of SFPs after 3 days of
sexual inactivity. Finally, we demonstrate that ELISAs can detect SFPs from wild-caught D. melanogaster males and, thus, potentially can be used to track mating patterns in the wild. This method of measuring SFP dynamics can
be used in a wide range of species to address questions related to male reproductive investment, female mating history, and
variation in female post-mating behavioral changes.

Senders and receivers influence dynamic characteristics of the signals used for mate attraction over different time scales.
On a moment-to-moment basis, interactions among senders competing for a mate influence dynamic characteristics, whereas the
preferences of receivers of the opposite gender exert an influence over evolutionary time. We observed and recorded the calling
patterns of the bird-voiced treefrog Hyla avivoca to assess how the dynamic characters of calls vary during interactions among groups of males in a chorus. This question was
also addressed using playback experiments with males. Playback experiments with females showed how changes in dynamic call
properties are likely to affect male mating success. Frogs calling in pairs, groups, or in response to playbacks produced
longer calls than did isolated males. During call overlap, males often increased the duration of the silent interval (gaps)
between the pulses of their calls so that the pulses of the calls of two neighbors interdigitated. This change resulted in
increased variability of pulse rate, a traditionally static acoustic property; however, males also produced high proportions
of non-overlapped calls in which variability in pulse rate was low and had species-typical values. Females preferred long
calls to short- and average-duration calls, and non-overlapped calls to overlapped calls. Given a choice between pairs of
overlapped calls, females preferred pairs in which the proportion of overlap was low and pairs in which the pulses of such
calls interdigitated completely. The observed patterns of vocal competition thus reflect the preferences of conspecific females,
which have influenced the evolution of the calling behavior of H. avivoca.

Two species of closely related wood cricket, Gryllus fultoni (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) and Gryllus vernalis, occur together in some parts of the eastern United States and have a similar calling song structure, consisting of three-pulse chirps. A previous study revealed that chirp rate in G. fultoni was highest (greatest difference vis-à-vis chirp rate in G. vernalis) in sympatric populations, intermediate in near allopatric populations that were located close to the sympatric zone, and lowest in allopatric populations. A similar trend was observed in pulse rate, but the mean values of this trait showed much more convergence than chirp rate at the low end of the range of calling temperatures. In this study, we investigated the song discrimination of females from sympatric and allopatric populations of G. fultoni at about 23°C, which is near the middle of the normal range of calling temperatures. We used both single-stimulus and two-stimulus playback experiments to learn if geographical differences in song preferences paralleled those in calling songs. Stimuli presented were representative of calling songs in three classes of G. fultoni populations (sympatric, near allopatric, and far allopatric), a calling song of G. vernalis, and three calling songs with parameter values that were intermediate with respect to those of the songs of far allopatric G. fultoni and G. vernalis. In the single-stimulus playbacks, females of all G. fultoni populations responded poorly if at all to the heterospecific stimulus. Females of sympatric and near allopatric populations responded poorly to all intermediate stimuli, but females of far allopatric populations frequently responded to these sounds. In the two-stimulus playbacks, females of sympatric and near allopatric populations generally discriminated against intermediate and heterospecific stimuli. However, females of far allopatric populations often did not discriminate against intermediate stimuli, whose characteristics resembled the calling songs of G. vernalis. The divergent pattern of female phonotactic discrimination between sympatric and far allopatric populations was thus generally congruent with the pattern of divergence in chirp and pulse rates and would be expected to significantly reduce heterospecific mating in sympatry. The maternally inherited bacterium Wolbachia pipientis generates strong reproductive incompatibilities between uninfected females and infected males (cytoplasmic incompatibility),
significantly reducing both female and male reproductive success. Such fitness costs are thought to place selective pressure
on hosts to evolve pre-copulatory preferences for mating with compatible mates, thereby enabling them to avoid the reproductive
incompatibilities associated with Wolbachia. Therefore, uninfected females are predicted to prefer mating with uninfected males, whereas infected males are predicted
to prefer mating with infected females. Despite these predictions, previous investigations of pre-copulatory mate preferences
in Wolbachia-manipulated Drosophila have not found evidence of female preference for uninfected or compatible males. However, none of these studies utilised
a design where focal individuals are provided with a simple choice in a relatively non-competitive situation. We examined
both female and male pre-copulatory mate preference based on mate infection status in Drosophila simulans and D. melanogaster using simple choice assays involving between 30–50 replicates per treatment. Although we found no evidence of female pre-copulatory
mate preferences in either species, male D. simulans exhibited some preference for mating with females of the same infection status. However, this preference was not evident
when we repeated the experiment to confirm this finding. Consequently, we conclude that neither male nor female D. melanogaster and D. simulans exhibit significant Wolbachia-associated pre-copulatory mate preferences. 相似文献

Crickets can autotomize a limb in order to evade predation; however, this autotomy compromises their escape speed and, therefore,
their ability to avoid subsequent predation events. We recorded two measures of predator-avoidance behaviour in field crickets
(Gryllus bimaculatus) exposed to varying levels of predation threat, with the most extreme level leading to autotomy of a limb. Our first measure
of caution was time to emergence from cover, which was affected by perceived predation treatment, with both autotomized males
and females being significantly more cautious than intact individuals. For males (but not females), the presence of a calling
conspecific encouraged earlier emergence. Our second measure of caution was alteration of male calling behaviour. Autotomized
males remained silent for significantly longer time after disturbance than intact males, but there was no difference in call
rate once they had resumed calling, suggesting that behavioural changes were not merely a result of injury response but a
controlled modification of behaviour as a result of autotomy. These data suggest that autotomy in field crickets results in
altered calling behaviour, which was not significantly altered with different acoustic environments. 相似文献

Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of two or more males compete to fertilize the egg/s of a particular female. Males
of some species respond to a high risk of sperm competition by increasing the number of sperm in their ejaculates. Males may
accomplish such a response by increasing the intensity or duration of contraction of the cauda epididymidis and vas deferens.
During emission (first phase of the ejaculatory process), the vas deferens receives sperm from the cauda epididymidis and
propels the sperm to the urethra. In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that males exposed to a high risk of sperm competition
mobilize larger numbers of sperm from the cauda epididymidis to the vas deferens before initiation of copulatory behavior.
This accumulation of sperm in the vas deferens would result in a larger number of sperm in the ejaculate. To test this hypothesis,
we exposed male meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, to either low or high risks of sperm competition using soiled bedding of conspecific individuals. At three different times
after this exposure (15, 30, or 60 min), we removed both vasa deferentia and counted the sperm within them. We found a significant
increase in sperm numbers in the vas deferens of males after 30 min of being exposed to a high risk of sperm competition.
The lower sperm numbers after 15 and 60 min of exposure suggest that the observed response is relatively slow and that sperm
mobilized to the vasa deferentia may return to the cauda epididymides if ejaculation does not occur some time after the observed
response. Our results indicate that the physiological response that may result in high sperm numbers in the ejaculate in relation
to high risk of sperm competition can occur before initiation of copulatory behavior. 相似文献

Pheromones may convey information about mate quality and social status. In the field cricket Gryllus integer, females mount the males for copulation, such that males cannot coerce females to mate. We examined whether virgin G. integer females preferred the scent of potentially dominant males to that of subordinate males. First, we collected pheromones by confining males on filter paper. Next, we offered filter paper from each of two size-matched males and control paper to females that had never been exposed to males, and measured the time spent by the female on each kind of paper. Finally, dominance status of the males in each size-matched pair was determined by pitting the two males against one another in agonistic contests. When offered filter paper from subsequently dominant versus subsequently subordinate males, females spent more time on the paper from the dominant male than the subordinate male, and much less time on control paper. Thus, pheromones may inform female G. integer about a male's potential to achieve dominant social status. Male pheromones were also associated with the female's tendency to mount a male. In contrast to cockroaches, where females prefer the scent of subordinate males (presumably to avoid risk of injury), female crickets prefer the scent of potentially dominant males and are more likely than males to wound their mating partners. 相似文献

Recent investigations of male ornaments in sexual selection have used experimental manipulation of tail length in three widowbird species, but only for one of these have correlates of male reproductive success been reported. I examined correlates of male attractiveness to nesting females over two breeding seasons for the polygynous yellow-shouldered widowbird, Euplectes macrourus, in order to discover which cues females may be using to select mates. The black, long-tailed ( 10 cm) males defend large territories and build nest frames, or cock's nests, which females then line and use for nesting. I examined various aspects of male morphology, five behavioral displays, territory characteristics, and the number of cock's nests that males built. Few correlates of mating success were found. The best predictor was the number of cock's nests that a male builds, though one courtship display also correlated with male mating success in 1 year, as did average grass height. Tail length did not correlate with male mating success. A partial correlation analysis confirmed that cock's nests and, in 1 year, grass height, were the primary contributers to male success. Females may choose where to nest primarily on the availability of suitable nesting sites. Long tails may be used by females seeking extra-pair copulations or in male-male competition for territories. 相似文献

Despite common stereotypes, males are not always indiscriminate and eager when it comes to mating. In the parasitoid wasp Spalangia endius, the initial response of males to females was almost always one of apparent excitement; however, this was followed by a clear preference for virgin females over mated females in both no-choice and choice situations. The no-choice data were collected from videotapes of male-female pairs of all possible combinations of mated and virgin individuals. Neither female nor male mating status had a significant effect on likelihood of, or time until, contact or male courtship fanning. However, a males first retreat was sooner when the female was mated than when she was virgin; mated males exhibited their first retreat sooner than did virgin males; and mated females were less likely to be mounted than were virgin females. In addition to the videotapes, male-choice experiments were performed. When given a choice of a virgin and a mated female, both virgin and mated males were more likely to mount and copulate with the virgin. The difference in response to virgin versus mated females seemed to be less in virgin males than in mated males, perhaps due to virgin males greater eagerness to mate: when a virgin male and a mated male were presented with a dead virgin female, the virgin male was usually the first to respond to the female. The relationship between brood parasites and their hosts is usually assumed to result in coevolution, and documentation of changes in extant populations should thus be possible. Here we describe how the ejection rate of eggs of an obligate brood parasite, the great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius, by its host, the magpie Pica pica, has recently increased in an area in southern Spain. The ejection rate of great spotted cuckoo eggs in naturally parasitized nests of the magpie increased at a rate of 0.5% year' during the period 1982–1992. This result was verified in a number of field experiments using nonmimetic and mimetic model eggs. The rate of increase in ejection rate was 4.7% year-1 for mimetic eggs and 2.3% year-1 for nonmimetic eggs. There were clear differences in parasitism by the great spotted cuckoo between study plots and years, which makes comparisons of rates of parasitism between areas difficult without considering temporal variation. The recent increase in the ejection response of magpies to great spotted cuckoo eggs was not due to magpies using the abundance of cuckoos as a cue to the intensity of parasitism. 相似文献

Females are generally assumed to prefer larger, more dominant males. However, a growing number of studies that control for male-male competition have shown no correlation between dominance and attractiveness. Aggressive males can interfere with female mate preference either by physically coercing females into mating or by driving submissive males away and restricting mate choice. The most common method of assessing female mate choice is by using simultaneous two-choice tests. These control for male-male interactions, but usually interfere with physical and chemical cues involved in mate selection or alter male behaviour. They are therefore unsuitable for many study species, especially insects. Another method is the no-choice test that measures a females latency to mating when placed with a single male as an indication of male attractiveness. No-choice tests control for male-male aggression while allowing full contact between pairs (they allow actual mating to be directly observed rather than to occur based on a correlated behaviour). So far, however, no study has confirmed that males that entice females to mate sooner actually enjoy increased longer-term mating success. As such, the accuracy of no-choice tests as a method of examining mate choice remains untested. Here, we used no-choice tests on the black field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus, to show that (1) females did not prefer males that won fights (dominant males), and (2) latency to mating predicts actual mating success. We have clearly demonstrated the usefulness of no-choice tests and, considering the advantages of this method, they should be more often considered for a wider variety of taxa.Communicated by D. Summary. The pollen beetle, Meligethes aeneus, is an important pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus. Larvae of this species feed only in the buds and flowers of Brassicaceae. One important natural enemy of this beetle is
the parasitoid Phradis morionellus that attacks larvae in buds and flowers and also feeds on the flowers. The preferences for odours of non-infested and infested
rape were tested for both starved and fed parasitoids in Y-tube olfactometer experiments. The volatile blend released from

Summary. Three components that elicited antennal response from male Choristoneura conflictana were found from female gland extracts analyzed using a coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detector system.
The main component in gland extracts was (Z)-11-tetradecenal (Z11-14:Ald). Two minor components also elicited antennal response: (E)11-tetradecenal (E11-14:Ald) and (Z)-11- tetradecen-1-ol (Z11-14:OH). Analysis of effluvia indicated that calling virgin females release mostly Z11-14:Ald and trace amounts of Z11-14:OH. Field and wind tunnel behavioral studies showed that Z11-14:Ald alone attracted male moths in a dose response pattern. Tests comparing male response to blends of components detected
in gland extracts showed that addition of 1.8% of E11-14:Ald to Z11-14:Ald did not influence male moths in the wind tunnel, but resulted in significantly lower trap captures in the field.
The threecomponent blend [Z11-14:Ald (100), E11-14:Ald (1.8), Z11-14:OH (11)], was less attractive than Z11-14:Ald alone in both field and wind tunnel studies. Traps baited with two virgin female moths were equally attractive to
males as traps baited with the three-component synthetic blend but less attractive than traps baited with Z11-14:Ald alone. Field tests of various blends of the two components (Z11-14:Ald, Z11-14:OH) detected in the females’ effluvia showed that the addition of 1–10% Z11-14:OH to Z11-14:Ald did not affect the males’ response to Z11-14:Ald. Our data demonstrate that female C. conflictana release sex pheromone components in a different ratio than they are stored in the pheromone gland. The sex pheromone is comprised
