Competitive interactions between germlings of Ascophyllum nodosum (L) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. were studied both in the laboratory and on a shore of the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea. Both intra- and interspecific competition were investigated by comparing the performance of algal germlings both in monocultures and mixed populations of the two species. The growth of germlings of both species reduced with increasing density. F. vesiculosus always grew faster than Ascophyllum and did best in mixed cultures, whereas Ascophyllum did least well when mixed with Fucus germlings. Clearly the adverse effects of F. vesiculosus on A. nodosum were greater than those of Ascophyllum cohorts. At the same total density, the survival and growth of Ascophyllum declined with an increasing proportion of Fucus germlings, implying that poor recruitment of A. nodosum results from strong competition with F. vesiculosus. However, under desiccation stress on the shore, F. vesiculosus enhanced the survival of A. nodosum at the early germling stage even though competition may occur again at the late stage. Thus, whether interactions between germlings take the form of competition or facilitation depends on the environmental conditions.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Because many secondary metabolites in plants act as defense against herbivores it has been postulated that these compounds have evolved under selective pressure by insect herbivores. One explanation for the within-species variation in metabolite patterns in a particular species is that different populations are under selection by different herbivores. We tested this hypothesis, using Arabidopsis thaliana plants that originated from dune and inland areas. We analyzed Arabidopsis thaliana leaves using NMR spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis. Major differences in chemical composition were found in water-methanol fractions and were due to higher concentrations of sinigrin and fumaric acid in dune plants. Inland plants showed lower levels of glucose. Quantitative analysis of glucosinolates was performed with HPLC. Individual plants and populations demonstrated differences in glucosinolate composition and concentration. In growth chamber experiments, the generalist herbivore, Spodoptera exigua grew significantly better on the inland plants, while the specialist herbivore Plutella xylostella performed equally well on plants of both origins. Aliphatic glucosinolate as well as total glucosinolate concentrations negatively correlated with larval mass of Spodoptera exigua. No significant correlations, however, were found between larval mass of Plutella xylostella and glucosinolates in the leaves. A specialist and a generalist herbivore were responding differently to plant secondary chemistry, as was also found in several other studies. This is an important indication that differences in glucosinolate concentrations among populations may result from differential selection by different guilds of herbivores.  相似文献

The genetic population structures of Atlantic northern bluefin tuna ( Thunnus thynnus thynnus) and albacore ( T. alalunga) were examined using allozyme analysis. A total of 822 Atlantic northern bluefin tuna from 18 different samples (16 Mediterranean, 1 East Atlantic, 1 West Atlantic) and 188 albacore from 5 samples (4 Mediterranean, 1 East Atlantic) were surveyed for genetic variation in 37 loci. Polymorphism and heterozygosity reveal a moderate level of genetic variability, with only two highly polymorphic loci in both Atlantic northern bluefin tuna ( FH* and SOD- 1*) and albacore ( GPI- 3* and XDH*). The level of population differentiation found for Atlantic northern bluefin tuna and albacore fits the pattern that has generally been observed in tunas, with genetic differences on a broad rather than a more local scale. For Atlantic northern bluefin tuna, no spatial or temporal genetic heterogeneity was observed within the Mediterranean Sea or between the East Atlantic and Mediterranean, indicating the existence of a single genetic grouping on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean. Very limited genetic differentiation was found between West Atlantic and East Atlantic/Mediterranean northern bluefin tuna, mainly due to an inversion of SOD- 1* allele frequencies. Regarding albacore, no genetic heterogeneity was observed within the Mediterranean Sea or between Mediterranean and Azores samples, suggesting the existence of a single gene pool in this area.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of the sub-Antarctic spatangoid sea urchin, Abatus cavernosus, was examined during a 2-year period in southern Patagonia, Argentina. The population studied is the northernmost known coastal population in the austral oceans, and is influenced by a greater annual range of seawater temperature than other Abatus species. The sex ratio of the overall A. cavernosus population did not differ significantly from 1:1, but was not homogeneous across size classes. A clearly defined annual reproductive cycle was found. Spawning occurred from May to July and was synchronous between sexes. Females were observed to be brooding within a 9-month period, from May to February. Juveniles were released during the austral summer, from January to February. The length at which 50% of the females were brooding occurred at a test length of 25.9 mm. A. cavernosus had a large egg size (mean diameter = 1.4 mm) and low fecundity (maximum = 57 eggs per female) compared to closely related species. The number of eggs within each brood pouch was highest in larger anterior brood pouch, which is close to two gonopores, as opposed to the other anterior and two smaller posterior pouches. Significant interannual variation was observed in gonad cycles, fecundity, and embryo development such as: brood size decreased during 2001; adjusted gonad dry weight and fecundity were higher during 2003. Hypotheses concerning the gonadal and brooding cycles and fecundity of sub-Antarctic and Antarctic Schizasteridae are discussed. Effects of maternal food environment and season were examined during spring and autumn on females, eggs and nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus, in different natural prey suspensions or cultures of Rhodomonas baltica. Females sampled in spring were in general larger, had higher protein content, and showed higher egg production and hatching rates, than in autumn. The cumulative egg production was almost double in spring compared to autumn (females fed R. baltica). Females had higher content of free amino acids (FAA) and free essential amino acids (EAA) in autumn than in the spring. Also, the FAA contents in eggs and nauplii were higher in autumn than in spring. In contrast, the composition of EAA in eggs was constant between seasons, indicating maternal regulation. The highest cumulative egg production was correlated with a high similarity in the free pool of EAA in the food suspension and the female copepod. Thus, the data support the hypothesis that similarity in the free pool of EAA of diet and female promotes high fecundity and egg hatching success in C. finmarchicus.  相似文献

Accurate fecundity estimates are central to population modelling of reproductive status and egg production in a fishery. Southern rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) fisheries are managed with the consideration of performance measures based on the level of current egg production relative to the unfished stock. Egg production is a function of the size at the onset of maturity, the size structure of the stock, and the fecundity at length of lobsters. Fecundity at length of the Tasmania stock of J. edwardsii has not been reported previously and was estimated from seven sites around Tasmania. Data were analysed by classical linear regression and also generalised linear models (GLM) with gamma and Poisson distributions. GLM with a gamma distribution produced the best fit and did not require a correction factor to generate a model on the linear scale. Individual fecundity ranged from 43,918 to 660,156 and could be predicted from carapace length according to the equation F = −1.707 + 2.969 (log length). The coefficient of length approximated three, implying the fecundity at length relationship is cuboidal. Despite the spatial heterogeneity in reproductive parameters in this fishery, the inclusion of spatial information and egg development stage into the analysis only explained an additional 1% of the variance in fecundity. Thus, it appears valid to apply the relationship across the fishery without spatial separation.  相似文献

The predator avoidance behaviours of two littoral mysid species, Neomysis integer (Leach) and Praunus flexuosus (Müller), were studied experimentally. In ingestion experiments, mysids responded to a combination of chemical and visual signals of perch (Perca fluviatilis), but not to each stimulus alone. In the presence of the combined visual and chemical predator signal the swimming activity and choice of habitat (open vs. artificial vegetation, the Charophyte Chara tomentosa or the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus) were also influenced. The two mysid species behaved differently when perceiving predation risk: N. integer reduced swimming activity, whereas P. flexuosus increased their use of the vegetation. The different antipredator strategies of the two mysid species reflect their different lifestyles, N. integer being a swarm-forming species and P. flexuosus living in association with aquatic macrophyte vegetation.Communicated by L. Female ornamentation may be directly sexually selected, by male choice or female competition, or occurs as the result of a genetic correlation, arising from sexual selection on males. However, increasing evidence supports the former hypothesis, suggesting that males actively choose their partner preferring traits indicative of female quality. In the lagoon goby, Knipowitschia panizzae, a polygynous species whose males perform parental care to eggs, body length and the size of a sex-specific yellow patch on the belly are known to be reliable indicators of female fecundity. In this paper, we tested, using dummies, the male’s mating preferences for female body and yellow belly patch sizes. The two experimental trials in which a single female trait was variable showed that males prefer a larger belly patch and a larger body size, indicating that both these characters are selected by male mate choice. However, when faced with dummies exhibiting an inverse combination of body and belly patch sizes (experiment 3), males significantly preferred the smaller ones with larger yellow belly patches. A calculation of dummy theoretical fecundity reveals that in the first two experiments, males would have received an immediate benefit from their choice in terms of egg number, whereas in the third one, males chose partners that would have provided them with fewer eggs. The male lagoon goby preference for females with larger belly patches, regardless of their size, suggests that this trait, in addition to indicating fecundity, conveys information about other aspects of female and/or egg quality.  相似文献

Northern and Spotted Wolffishes (Anarhichas denticulatus and A. minor) are demersal marine fishes listed as “threatened” in Canadian waters. Both species have unusually large benthic eggs and large size at hatch, which should reduce passive dispersal. We examined population differentiation with microsatellite and AFLP loci across the ranges of both species in the North Atlantic Ocean. Although significant population structure was documented, differentiation was less than expected based on knowledge of life history characteristics. Significant differentiation was found in Northern Wolffish between the Barents Sea and other samples based on both microsatellite and AFLP data. In contrast, population structure in the Spotted Wolffish was notably weaker, particularly with microsatellites. Both species were characterized by low genetic diversity for marine fishes and had significantly lower genetic diversity than the congeneric Atlantic Wolffish. This finding was consistent with the conservation status of these three species and suggests potential vulnerability to over-exploitation in Northern and Spotted Wolffishes.  相似文献

We evaluated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation in a 910 bp region of the cytochrome b gene of the storm petrel, Hydrobates pelagicus. Samples from birds collected from five populations in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Genetic differentiation within the Mediterranean basin was low but high in the Atlantic. Strong differences were noted between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean populations, confirming the distinction of the subspecies H. p. pelagicus and H. p. melitensis for the Atlantic and Mediterranean seabirds, respectively. Divergence between the two subspecies probably resulted from paleogeographic changes in the Strait of Gibraltar, which was likely the route used by H. pelagicus to invade the Mediterranean Sea. Current and past demography and ecology of the storm petrel is regarded as an explanation for the level of differentiation observed within each oceanic basin. We compare the phylogeographic pattern of the storm petrel to other seabirds that breed in the same regions.Communicated by S. A. Recruitment of capelin in the Barents Sea fail when juvenile herring and cod are abundant and the potential for feeding competition of wild sympatric capelin and herring larvae and small cod juveniles were investigated. The frequency of gut evacuation after capture of capelin larvae were also studied in mesocosms. Small capelin larvae (<35 mm length) fed on small prey including phytoplankton, invertebrate eggs and nauplii, bivalves, other invertebrate larvae and small copepods. Calanus copepodites were only observed in large capelin larvae (>26 mm length). Calanus copepodites were the major food sources for contemporary herring larvae (25–35 mm length) and Calanus and euphausiids were the major prey for small juvenile herring (37–60 mm length) and cod (18–40 mm length). Capelin larvae reared in mesocosms evacuated the guts shortly after capture. Capelin larvae had a smaller mouth and fed on smaller prey than herring and cod of the same length. This implies that the small capelin larvae, in contrast to sympatric small herring and cod, are not tightly linked to the food chain involving Calanus and euphausiids. Thus, exploitative competition between capelin larvae and planktivorous fish that rely on Calanus and euphausiids in the Barents Sea may be relaxed.  相似文献

The social spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) of Stigmaeopsis weave dense nests on the underside of host leaves. Four species occur on the leaves of bamboo in Japan: Stigmaeopsis longus, S. celarius, S. takahashii and S. saharai. We initially reconfirmed the occurrence of distinct variation in nest size among the species. Based on the hypothesis that this variation plays a role in protecting the spider mites from predators, we looked at the behavior of the natural enemies that occur on the host plants along with members of Stigmaeopsis. We found considerable variation in the ability of nests to protect the spider-mite eggs. The smallest nests protected the eggs against three predators, whereas the largest nests protected the eggs against only one predator species. So, decreases in nest size increased egg defense. Thus we concluded that nest-size variation reflects a strategy for reducing predation.Communicated by D. Gwynne  相似文献

Reproductive activity and production of the calanoid copepods Calanus helgolandicus and Calanoides carinatus were measured during a summer upwelling event off the coast of NW Spain. The upwelling pattern affected the distribution and fecundity of both species in the study area. The demographic composition of both populations and the stage of gonad maturation (e.g. the high abundance of fertilised females with mature ova) indicated active reproduction. C. carinatus, a highly fecund species associated with the African upwelling zones and considered as an upwelling specialist, showed low production rates (overall means of 15 eggs female–1 day–1 and 3% body C day–1), despite the fact that the food conditions (high phytoplankton biomass dominated by diatoms) seemed to be optimal for this species. By contrast, C. helgolandicus, a temperate species that shows a strong link between spring phytoplankton blooms and reproduction time, seems to be flexible enough to take full advantage of shorter-term, enhanced feeding conditions associated with the pulsed nature of the summer coastal upwelling. Both the egg and carbon-specific production rates attained by this species (overall means of 26 eggs female–1 day–1 and 12% body C day–1) were similar to values reported for a spring bloom situation. This high production would imply a long spring–summer recruitment event of C. helgolandicus in these waters. For both species the stage of gonad maturation was significantly correlated with their egg production rates and likely influenced by the food conditions; a species-specific nutritional requirement for final oogenesis is suggested. The carbon condition factor (carbon weight/prosome volume) of C. carinatus females was higher than that of C. helgolandicus, suggesting differential use of the carbon ingested; C. helgolandicus seems to use all ingested carbon to produce eggs at a high rates, whereas C. carinatus seems to store part of the ingested carbon as lipid reserves to ensure female survival and to support production during subsequent unfavourable food conditions.Communicated by S.A. Spatio-temporal variability in settlement and recruitment, high mortality during the first life-history stages, and selection may determine the genetic structure of cohorts of long-lived marine invertebrates at small scales. We conducted a spatial and temporal analysis of the common Mediterranean Sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus to determine the genetic structure of cohorts at different scales. In Tossa de Mar (NW Mediterranean), recruitment was followed over 5 consecutive springs (2006–2010). In spring 2008, recruits and two-year-old individuals were collected at 6 locations along East and South Iberian coasts separated from 200 to over 1,100 km. All cohorts presented a high genetic diversity based on a fragment of mtCOI. Our results showed a marked genetic homogeneity in the temporal monitoring and a low degree of spatial structure in 2006. In 2008, coupled with an abnormality in the usual circulation patterns in the area, the genetic structure of the southern populations studied changed markedly, with arrival of many private haplotypes. This fact highlights the importance of point events in renewing the genetic makeup of populations, which can only be detected through analysis of the cohort structure coupling temporal and spatial perspectives.  相似文献

Life-history features of the sympatric amphipods Themisto pacifica and T. japonica in the western North Pacific were analyzed based on seasonal field samples collected from July 1996 through July 1998, and data from laboratory rearing experiments. T. pacfica occurred throughout the year, with populations peaking from spring to summer. In contrast, T. japonica were rare from autumn to early winter, but became abundant in late winter to spring. Mature T. pacifica females and juveniles occurred together throughout the year, indicating year-round reproduction. Mature T. japonica females were observed only in spring, and juveniles occurred irregularly in small numbers, suggesting limited, early-spring reproduction in this study area. Size composition analysis of T. pacifica identified a total of eight cohorts over the 2 years of the study. Due to the smaller sample size and rarity of mature females (>9.6 mm) and males (>7.1 mm), cohort analyses of T. japonica were not comparable. Laboratory rearing of specimens at 2°C, 5°C, 8°C and 12°C revealed that a linear equation best expressed body length growth by T. pacifica, while a logistic equation best expressed body length growth by T. japoncia. Combining these laboratory-derived growth patterns with maturity sizes of wild specimens, the minimum and maximum generation times of females at a temperature range of 2–12°C were computed as 32 days (12°C) and 224 days (2°C), respectively, for T. pacifica, and 66 days (12°C) and 358 days (2°C), respectively, for T. japonica. The numbers of eggs or juveniles in females marsupia increased with female body length and ranged from 23 to 64 for T. pacifica and from 152 to 601 for T. japonica. Taking into account the number of mature female instars, lifetime fecundities were estimated as 342 eggs for T. pacifica and 1195 eggs for T. japonica. Possible mechanisms for the coexistence of these two amphipods in the Oyashio region are also discussed.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Herbivory has a strong impact on algal distribution, abundance and community structure and may influence the establishment and spread of introduced seaweed species. In this study, we assess the potential regulating role of herbivory on one of the most invasive brown seaweeds: Sargassum muticum. Multiple choice feeding experiments were conducted with 13 native seaweeds, S. muticum and 5 herbivore species from the Northwest, Southwest and South of Portugal. S. muticum was always the least or among the least preferred seaweeds and attained one of the highest growth rates of the tested seaweeds, with and without herbivores. The addition of herbivores increased the number of cases by 40% in which the invader had higher growth rates. Our results suggest that low grazing pressure on S. muticum by the recipient herbivore community may give the invader a competitive advantage over at least part of the native seaweed community, thereby contributing to the invasiveness of S. muticum along the Portuguese coast.  相似文献

The lysianassid amphipod Orchomenella aahu was associated with small-scale mass mortality of Ecklonia radiata, the dominant laminarian alga in north-eastern New Zealand. O. aahu burrowed into and hollowed out stipes with severe bleaching, accelerating mortality by 12–14 months. Meristoderm tissue of bleached plants contained approximately one-third of the phlorotannin content (~4% dry mass) present in unbleached, apparently healthier, sporophytes (~12% dry mass). Unbleached stages consistently lacked amphipod damage. O. aahu also colonised plants when non-lethal storm damage afforded entry into the cortical layers of the primary lamina, and ultimately the stipe. O. aahu typically consumed both medullary and cortical tissue of the stipes, forming networked brood-chambers within them, with increasing populations often reducing the plant to the holdfast. There was synchronised mortality across sites and between depths over spatial scales of metres. Following loss of the mature canopy, recruitment of E. radiata was generally within 2 months at most study sites where mortality had occurred.Communicated by G.F. Humphrey, Sydney  相似文献

The Chilean gastropods Crepipatella dilatata and C. fecunda have different development modes: brooding and direct development in C. dilatata and brooding and planktotrophic development in C. fecunda. Unlike many other congeneric invertebrate species pairs, recent genetic evidence suggests that C. fecunda may have evolved from C. dilatata. To explore the changes involved in this unusual evolutionary path, this study examined the biochemical, energetic, and morphological characters during early development of both species. Mean egg size was slightly smaller for the direct-developing species C. dilatata, and initial energy content was lower—by about 27%—for eggs of that species. In both species, protein content in the eggs was the principal biochemical component. Although females of C. fecunda produce 180 times more eggs than C. dilatata, females of C. dilatata invest 20 times more energy in each of their offspring, through nurse eggs; their embryos have approximately eight times more energy at hatching and about 5 times more energy when they enter the benthos, despite a long planktonic feeding period in the larvae of C. fecunda. Evolutionary switching between modes of development in these species is reflected in shifts in maternal energy investment.  相似文献

We conducted grazing experiments with the three marine cladoceran genera Penilia, Podon and Evadne, with Penilia avirostris feeding on plankton communities from Blanes Bay (NW Mediterranean, Spain), covering a wide range of food concentrations (0.02–8.8 mm3 l–1, plankton assemblages grown in mesocosms at different nutrient levels), and with Podon intermedius and Evadne nordmanni feeding on the plankton community found in summer in Hopavågen Fjord (NE Atlantic, Norway, 0.4 mm3 l–1). P. avirostris and P. intermedius showed bell-shaped grazing spectra. Both species reached highest grazing coefficients at similar food sizes, i.e. when the food organisms ranged between 15 and 70 µm and between 7.5 and 70 µm at their longest linear extensions, respectively. E. nordmanni preferred organisms of around 125 µm, but also showed high grazing coefficients for particles of around 10 µm, while grazing coefficients for intermediate food sizes were low. Lower size limits were >2.5 µm, for all cladocerans. P. avirostris showed upper food size limits of 100 µm length (longest linear extension) and of 37.5 µm particle width. Upper size limits for P. intermedius were 135 µm long and 60 µm wide; those for E. nordmanni were 210 µm long and 60 µm wide. Effective food concentration (EFC) followed a domed curve with increasing nutrient enrichment for P. avirostris; maximum values were at intermediate enrichment levels. The EFC was significantly higher for P. intermedius than for E. nordmanni. With increasing food concentrations, the clearance rates of P. avirostris showed a curvilinear response, with a narrow modal range; ingestion rates indicated a rectilinear functional response. Mean clearance rates of P. avirostris, P. intermedius and E. nordmanni were 25.5, 18.0 and 19.3 ml ind.–1 day–1, respectively. Ingestion rates at similar food concentrations (0.4 mm3 l–1) were 0.6, 0.8 and 0.9 g C ind.–1 day–1.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

According to theory, variation in plant secondary metabolism against herbivores is driven by variation in biotic and abiotic conditions interacting with plants genotype to determine the expression of resistance traits. Particularly, it has been long postulated that plants growing along latitudinal gradients experience changes in biotic and abiotic interactions, specifically leading to a decrease of plant toxicity towards the poles. We tested this hypothesis using the asteraceous species Smallanthus macroscyphus. Smallanthus species are known to contain sesquiterpene lactones (STLs), bitter compounds with a broad spectrum of biological activities, including deterrence to herbivores. S. macroscyphus showed a decrease in chemical diversity of STLs when investigating populations growing from the tropical regions to less tropical ones. Populations from lower latitudes were found to be more chemically diverse with enhydrin, uvedalin and fluctuanin as main components, while populations southward were chemically fairly uniform, with polymatin A as the main and largely dominant STL. The STL chemistry of S. macroscyphus is in agreement with the hypothesis that plants of tropical forests have a greater diversity of secondary metabolites when compared to their temperate counterparts.  相似文献
