The use of the egg production rate of herbivorous copepods as an important parameter for understanding population dynamics and as an index of secondary production requires knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms involved and of the response to changes in food concentrations and temperature. Furthermore, the effects of season and generation on egg production have to be studied. In this context data are presented for Calanus finmarchicus from the northern North Atlantic. Prefed and prestarved females were exposed to different concentrations of the diatom Thalassiosira antarctica over 1 to 2 wk at 0 or 5 °C, and egg deposition was controlled daily. Egg production increased with higher food concentrations, but much less when prestarved. The effect of temperatures between −1.5 and 8 °C on egg production was studied in females maintained at optimum feeding conditions. Egg production rate increased exponentially over the whole temperature range by a factor of 5.2, from 14.2 to 73.4 eggs female−1 d−1, and carbon-specific egg production by 4, from 2.1 to 8.5% body C d−1. The response to starvation was also temperature dependent. In both the temperature and feeding experiments egg production rate was regulated mainly by changes of the spawning interval, while changes of clutch size were independent of experimental conditions. Different responses to optimum feeding conditions were observed in females collected in monthly intervals on three occasions between March and May. The March females deposited more clutches than the April and May females. In May, >50% of the females did not spawn at all. Maximum egg production rates were never >25% of the rate expected at 5 °C, indicating endogenous control of egg production in addition to food and temperature effects. Egg production and development rates of Centropages typicus (Krøyer) were studied in the laboratory under carying food and temperature conditions. Egg production rates in the laboratory ranged from 0 to 124 eggs female-1 d-1 and increased with food concentration up to a critical food concentration (Pc) above which egg production was constant. Egg production rates were influenced by temperature, with more eggs being produced at 15°C than at 10°C. Thalassiosira weisflogii and Prorocentrum micans were determined to be equally capable of supporting egg production at concentrations above Pc at 15°C. Rate of egg production was independent of adult female size when food and temperature were constant. Egg production rates of freshly captured females ranged from 0 to 188 eggs female-1 d-1 and were higher in April and May than in June or July. Hatching rates of eggs increased with increased temperature; 95% of the eggs at 15°C hatched within 48 h, while only 8% of the eggs at 10°C hatched within 48 h. Development rates, determined at 10°C in excess concentrations of T. weisflogii, were 23.0 d from egg release to copepodid state I, 27.0 d to stage II, 29.5 d to stage III, 32.2 d to stage IV, 38.5 d to stage V and 49 d to adulthood based on the average time required for 50% of the organisms in an experiment to attain a given stage. Adult males were usually observed 2 to 4 d before adult females, and therefore have a slightly faster rate of development. The effects of temperature, food type and food concentration on egg production and the seasonal appearances of diatoms in the New York Bight may account for the observed seasonal cycles in abundance of C. typicus in these coastal waters.  相似文献

Feeding, egg production, hatching success and early naupliar development of Calanus finmarchicus were measured in three north Norwegian fjords during a spring bloom dominated by diatoms and the haptophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii. Majority of the copepod diet consisted of diatoms, mainly Thalassiosira spp. and Chaetoceros spp., with clearance rates up to 10 ml ind−1 h−1 for individual algae species/groups. Egg production rates were high, ranging from ca 40 up to 90 eggs f−1 d−1, with a hatching success of 70–85%, and fast naupliar development through the first non-feeding stages. There was no correlation between the egg or nauplii production and diatom abundance, but the hatching success was slightly negatively correlated with diatom biomass. However, the overall high reproductive rates suggested that the main food items were not harmful for C. finmarchicus reproduction in the area, although direct chemical measurements were not conducted. The high population egg production (>1,20,000 eggs m−2 d−1) indicated that a large part of the annual reproduction took place during the investigation, which stresses the importance of diatom-dominated spring phytoplankton bloom for population recruitment of C. finmarchicus in these northern ecosystems.  相似文献

The sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus is capable of surviving chronic exposure to sodium phosphate (inorganic phosphate) concentrations as high as 3.2 mg l−1, and triethyl phosphate (organic phosphate) concentrations of 1,000 mg l−1. However, chronic exposure to low (0.8 mg l−1 inorganic and 10 mg l−1 organic phosphate), medium (1.6 mg l−1 inorganic and 100 mg l−1 organic phosphate) or high (3.2 mg l−1 inorganic and 1,000 mg l−1 organic phosphate) sublethal concentrations of these phosphates inhibits feeding, fecal production, nutrient absorption and allocation, growth and righting behavior. Food consumption and fecal production declined significantly in individuals exposed to medium and high concentrations of inorganic phosphates and all levels of organic phosphates. Feeding absorption efficiencies for total organics and carbohydrates decreased significantly in individuals held in the highest concentration of organic phosphate. Feeding absorption efficiencies for lipids were significantly reduced in the highest inorganic phosphate concentration only, while they decreased significantly for protein with increasing phosphate exposure. Carbohydrate and lipid levels in gonad and gut tissues decreased significantly with exposure to increasing phosphate concentrations, potentially impairing both gametogenesis and nutrient storage in the gut. Moreover, gonad indices significantly decreased in individuals exposed to the highest concentrations of either phosphate. Growth rates decreased significantly under the influence of all phosphate concentrations, while increasing in seawater alone. Individuals exposed to increasing phosphate concentrations showed reduced righting responses (a measure of stress) and no acclimation in righting times during chronic exposure to phosphates over a 4 week period. These findings indicate that shallow-water populations of L. variegatus subjected to inorganic and organic phosphate pollutants will exhibit stress and be inhibited in their growth and performance due to reductions in feeding, nutrient absorption and allocation of nutrients to key somatic and reproductive tissues. The shallow-living, benthopelagic copepod species Pseudocyclops xiphophorus Wells (R Soc Edimburg 67:1967), collected over a yearly cycle from the fouling material in the brackish water Lake Faro (North-eastern Sicily), showed marked seasonal fluctuations in population abundances, with maximum numbers recorded in autumn. Highest in situ egg production rates coincided with periods of low adult and juvenile densities and vice versa, except in autumn when peaks in egg production and adult population densities were coincident. In this period, mean daily egg production rates reached a maximum of 4–5 eggs per female, when surface water temperature was 17–18°C. Egg production rates declined drastically in winter and were completely arrested when surface temperatures dropped to 10–12°C. In March, daily egg production rates began to increase again with an increase in ambient temperatures, reaching a maximum at the end of August. In the laboratory, as in the field, mean daily egg production rates were positively correlated with temperature, with values ranging from 2.2 ± 0.3 (16°C) to 8.9 ± 2.6 (30°C) (mean ± S.D.) eggs per female per day. At 32°C, P. xiphophorus females survived but did not reproduce. At 34°C, all specimens died after a few days. In terms of total egg production for the entire female lifespan, maximum values occurred at 16°C and minimum at 24°C. Temperature also dramatically affected female life span, which was shorter at higher temperatures. Development time of eggs decreased with increasing temperature, as also development time from egg to adulthood. Remating was necessary for the continued production of fertile eggs at 16°C because female life span was longer. The unique egg-laying behaviour in this species may ensure higher survival rates of egg stages compared to free-spawning and egg-carrying calanoid species. After releasing the egg pair, the female swims over the eggs with a rotatory motion, secreting a substance which facilitates the adhesion of the eggs to the bottom; she then continues to swim over the eggs until they are attached. Although egg production rates in this species are low compared to other pelagic copepods, they are within the range of values reported for egg-carrying species. The greater fecundity at higher temperatures compared to other subtemperate species indicates that the species is well adapted to the higher temperatures of coastal lagoons and brackish water lakes where it contributes to the biofouling community.  相似文献

Summary. In amphibians and fishes, evidence is increasing that chemical cues from injured conspecifics can play a role in the chemical labelling and learned recognition of unfamiliar predators. In this laboratory study, we tested the prediction that prior chemical exposure to a non-native predator feeding on conspecific tadpoles will subsequently allow tadpoles of the common toad (Bufo bufo) to recognize the chemical cues specifically released by this starved predator. Furthermore, we investigated the vulnerability of this chemically-mediated process to herbicide contamination. With these aims in view, groups of tadpoles were kept either unexposed or exposed for ten days to chemical cues from Turkish crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) previously fed on tadpoles, both in uncontaminated water and in the presence of four sublethal concentrations of amitrole (0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg.l−1). We then assessed the effects of the six conditioning treatments on general activity and behavioural response to chemical cues from starved crayfish. Larval treatments did not affect the general activity of the tadpoles. By contrast, the treatments had significant effects on the behavioural response to the test solution prepared form starved crayfish. The only tadpoles to show an antipredator behavioural response to the chemical stimulation from starved crayfish belonged to the groups derived from chemical exposure to tadpole-fed crayfish in uncontaminated water and in contaminated water with the lowest concentration of amitrole (0.01 mg.l−1). Conversely, this chemical stimulation produced no behavioural change in the control group or in the groups derived from exposure to tadpole-fed crayfish in contaminated water containing 0.1, 1 and 10 mg.l−1 of amitrole. This study demonstrates that chemical cues released during the predator’s feeding activity can subsequently be used by common toad tadpoles in the recognition of an unfamiliar predator. In addition, our results show that the presence of sublethal amitrole concentrations can impair this recognition process. Such a pesticide effect might be especially detrimental for amphibian populations threatened by invasive predators.  相似文献

Egg production of single female Calanus glacialis Jaschnov fed with Thalassiosira antarctica at super-abundant concentrations (>300 g C l-1) was determined over several weeks. Experiments were performed directly after collection from the East Greeland Current in June 1987 and 1988, and during resumed feeding after long-term starvation over 4 (October 1988), 4.5 (October 1987) and 6.5 (January 1988) mo. In addition, in June 1987, short-term starvation experiments of 5 and 15 d were conducted. Egg production was closely related to feeding in all experiments. While directly after collection eggs were produced within a few days, it took 2 wk (October 1987 and 1988) and 10 d (January 1988), respectively, to resume egg production after long-term starvation. During long-term starvation periods eggs were not laid. The decrease in total egg production with duration of starvation was due to decreasing clutch size and increasing spawning interval. In contrast, short-term starvation experiments only affected spawning interval. Interannual variability in egg production was high, with much higher clutch sizes in 1988. Average production rates in June 1988 correponded to 5% body C female-1 d-1, the maximum was 7.4% (1 274 eggs in 23 d). Carbon content of eggs was 0.40 g egg-1. C. glacialis is well adapted to pulsed food events in the Arctic by its longevity; its ability to preserve its reproductive potential over several months; its rapid mobilization of ovaries; and by its high egg production rates. The implication of prolonged spawning capacity on life cycle studies is discussed.  相似文献

The toxicity of fenitrothion was determined in larvae (nauplii, Zoeae 1 to 3, Mysis 1 to 3), postlarvae (PL stages) and juvenile shrimp (Penaeus japonicus Bate), in two media, seawater (SW) and diluted seawater (DSW) (1100 and 550 mosM kg−1, ≃ 37 and 19‰ S). The effects of fenitrothion on the osmoregulatory capacities (OC) of juveniles were recorded. A gill and epipodite histopathological study was also conducted. For larvae in seawater, 24 and 48 h LC50s ranged from 32.9 μg l−1 (Zoeae 2) to 10.7 μg l−1 (Mysis 3), and from 3.9 μg l−1 (Zoeae 3) to 2.0 μg l−1 (Mysis 3), respectively; 48 and 96 h  LC50s in postlarvae (PL) at the same salinity ranged from 1.8 μg l−1 (PL1) to 0.6 μg l−1 (PL5), and from 0.3 μg l−1 (PL7) to 0.4 μg l−1 (PL15). In juveniles, 96 h LC50s were 0.8 μg l−1 in seawater and 1.5 μg l−1 in diluted seawater. From hatching to juvenile stages, the overall trend was a rapid decrease (from nauplii to PL5–PL7) followed by a slight increase (from PL7 to PL15 and juveniles) in the shrimp's ability to tolerate the insecticide. In juveniles kept in seawater and in diluted seawater, fenitrothion decreased the osmoregulatory capacity (OC = difference between the hemolymph osmotic pressure and the osmotic pressure of the medium) at both lethal and sublethal concentrations. This effect was time- and dose-dependent. In SW, the decrease in hypo-OC was ˜ 25% at sublethal concentrations and ˜ 35% at the 96 h LC50. In DSW, the decrease in hyper-OC was ˜ 10 to 15% at sublethal concentrations. In SW, shrimp were able to recover their OC in less than 48 h when transferred to water free of pesticide. In DSW, recovery at 48 h was only possible after exposure to the lowest tested sublethal concentration. Haemocytic congestions (thrombosis) of the gills, lamellae necrosis and other alterations of gills and epipodites (breakage of the cuticle, reduction of the hemolymph lacunae) were noted in juveniles exposed to lethal and sublethal concentrations of fenitrothion. The population dynamics of Pseudocalanus acuspes in the Central Baltic Sea were studied from March 2002 to May 2003 on a monthly basis. All stages were present year round with a stage shift from nauplii to older copepodite stages over the course of the year. Biomass, estimated from prosome length, peaked between May and September with maximum recorded values of 594 and 855 mg C m−2 in May 2002 and 2003, respectively. Differences in biomass between stations up to a factor of 20 were observed especially in April/May and October. Mean egg production rate (EPR) showed a seasonal course and was highest in April 2002 and 2003 with 3.6 and 2.1 eggs f−1 day−1, respectively, corresponding to a mean weight-specific egg production rate (SEPR) of 0.13 and 0.04. Egg production seems to be limited by food from May on. Stage durations determined from moulting experiments turned out to be extremely long. Maximum growth rates based on stage durations of 15–25 days at 4°C in May and July 2003 amounted for 0.03–0.05 day−1 in CI-CIV. Comparing these rates with rates derived from temperature–development relationships for P. acuspes from the literature resulted in five times higher growth rates for the latter case. Secondary production reached values up to 9.1 mg C m−2 day−1 (method for continuously reproducing populations) and 10.5 mg C m−2 day−1 (increment summation).  相似文献

Egg production was measured in 17 species of copepods from the genera Acartia, Calanopia, Centropages, Clausocalanus, Corycaeus, Eucheata, Euterpina, Oithona, Oncaea, Paracalanus, Parvocalanus, Temora and Undinula in Jamaican waters. At the high local temperatures (∼28 °C), mean egg production ranged from 3.2 to 88 eggs female–1 d–1, and instantaneous female growth (g, as egg production) ranged from 0.04 to 0.87 d–1. Female growth was positively related to ambient chlorophyll concentration (r 2 = 0.44) and negatively to female body size (r 2 = 0.29). Together these two variables explained 60% of the variation in growth. When quadratic terms for chlorophyll and a term for interaction of body size and chlorophyll were introduced, 82% of the variance in growth rate was explained. Egg production rates represent an extension of the resource and size-dependent relationship established for copepodites. In smaller species (<3.5 μg), egg production was comparable to prior copepodite somatic growth; in larger species (>3.5 μg), egg production is compromised at lower resource concentrations than copepodite somatic growth. Thus, it appears that egg production in tropical copepods may be frequently limited by resources in a size-dependent manner. Under conditions where growth is resource limited, we caution against the application of egg production rates for the calculation of total copepod production.  As part of an ongoing study of changes in the trophic pathways of Florida Bay's pelagic ecosystem, the nutritional environment (seston protein, lipid and carbohydrate levels), diet (taxon-specific microplankton ingestion rates) and egg production rate of the important planktonic copepod Acartia tonsa were measured off Rankin and Duck Keys in July and September 1997 and in January, March and May 1998. Rankin Key has been the site of extensive sea grass mortality and persistent ultraplankton blooms since 1987. Duck Key has experienced neither of these perturbations. Protist (auto-plus heterotroph) biomass was approximately twice as high off Rankin as off Duck Key. Diatoms, dinoflagellates and heterotrophic protists dominated the food environment off Rankin Key, while cells <5 μm diam often predominated off Duck Key. Protein and carbohydrate concentrations were higher off Rankin Key than Duck Key, while average lipid levels were usually low at both stations. Ingestion rates at both stations frequently approached temperature- and food-dependent maxima for the species, exceeding 100% of estimated body C d−1 on 3 of 5 occasions off Rankin Key. Egg production rates, however, were consistently low (Rankin: 3 to 16 eggs copepod−1 d−1; Duck: 1 to 12 eggs copepod−1 d−1), and gross egg production efficiencies (100% × egg production C/ingested C) averaged <10%. At Duck Key, egg production rate varied with temperature and food concentration, while off Rankin Key, egg production was strongly correlated with seston protein content. The efficiency with which lipids (which were scarce in the seston) were transferred from the diet to the eggs increased exponentially with decreasing seston lipid content. Egg production efficiencies based on protein, however, were independent of seston protein content and never exceeded 10%. Received: 23 December 1998 / Accepted: 23 March 2000  相似文献

To investigate copepod nauplii ingestion rates on phytoplankton, we have adapted the traditional gut fluorescence technique as it can be used with lower gut pigment concentrations. With the improved technique, laboratory experiments were performed to estimate functional responses for nauplii of Calanus helgolandicus and Centropages typicus. Nauplii were raised from eggs to copepodites and the experiments were performed with stages NIV-NV. Gut evacuation rates and ingestion rates were measured on Isochrysis galbana at different concentrations. Specific ingestion rates ranged between 0.038–0.244 μg C μg−1 nauplii C d−1 for C. typicus and 0.041–1.412 μg C μg−1 nauplii C d−1 for C. helgolandicus. Both species showed a type III functional response, reaching a saturation concentration at around 600 μgC l−1 for C. typicus and 800 μgC l−1 for C. helgolandicus. The functional response of the aspects of reproductive success of a southwestern Baltic population of Acartia tonsa (Copepoda: Calanoida) was quantified in the laboratory using wide ranges in temperatures and salinities. Specifically, daily egg production (EP, # female−1 day−1) was determined for 4 or 5 days at 18 different temperatures between 5 and 34°C and the time course and success of hatching were evaluated at 10 different temperatures between 5 and 23°C. The effect of salinity (0 to 34 psu) on egg hatching success was also examined. The highest mean rates of EP were observed between 22 and 23°C (46.8–50.9 eggs female−1 day−1). When studied at 18 psu, hatching success of eggs increased with increasing temperature and was highest (92.2%) at 23°C. No hatching was observed for eggs incubated at low temperatures (≤12°C) that were produced by females acclimated to temperatures ≤10°C indicating a possible thermal threshold between 10.0 and 13.0°C below which only the production of diapause (or low quality) eggs exists in this population. When tested at 18°C, the hatching success of eggs incubated at 15 different salinities increased asymptotically with increasing salinity and was maximal (81.4–84.5%) between 17 and 25 psu. The high reproductive success observed over wide ranges in temperatures and salinities in this Baltic population demonstrates one of the mechanisms responsible for the cosmopolitan distribution of this species within productive, estuarine and marine habitats.  相似文献

Egg production by Undinula vulgaris, collected off Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, was measured under field and laboratory conditions on 16 occasions from June to December 1991. In situ rates ranged from 0 to 15.7 eggs female-1 d-1, with a mean of 6.4 eggs female-1 d-1, 2.1% female body carbon d-1. Maximum in situ production was 53 eggs female-1 d-1, 17.2% C d-1. Average egg production (Y, eggs female-1 d-1) was related to the concentration of particulate carbon (X, g C l-1) by the Ivlev function, Y=13.9[1-e-0.0097 (x-10)], with R 2=0.96. Individuals with the same feeding history produced more eggs at lower temperatures in the laboratory. Egg production was not significantly correlated with dry weight, and no noticeable temporal trend was found. Despite the elevated habitat temperatures (26 to 27°C) of this subtropical copepod, maximum fecundity of U. vulgaris was comparable to, but average rates were lower than, egg production rates of similarly-sized, temperate and borcal species of the genus Calanus. Our results caution against broad extrapolations of the temperature-growth relationship for temperate coastal copepods to species from poorly studied, oligotrophic regions of the oceans.Contribution No. 3257 from the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822, USA  相似文献

To determine how fertilisation varied with sperm concentration for two species of scallop, Chlamys (Equichlamys) bifrons (Lamarck) and C. asperrima (Lamarck), we performed a simple series of sperm dilution experiments, and measured egg size and sperm swimming speeds. C. bifrons eggs were much larger (average diam=116.5 μm), and sperm swimming speeds faster (209.8 μm s−1), than C. asperrima (71.2 μm, 166.0 μm s−1). In both species, maximum fertilisation occurred at an ambient sperm concentration of around 100 sperm μl−1; the maximum proportion of eggs fertilised was less than 0.70 in the C. bifrons experiments, but nearer 1.0 with C. asperrima. At high sperm concentrations (>100 sperm μl−1), fertilisation decreased (presumably due to polyspermy) with increasing sperm concentration, but decreased more rapidly in C. bifrons than C. asperrima. A polyspermy-adjusted fertilisation kinetics model could be fitted to the experimental data, but unique parameter estimates could not be determined. Feeding rates of the jellyfish Aurelia aurita on fish larvae   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We quantified feeding rates of field caught Aurelia aurita feeding on yolk sac cod (Gadus morhua) larvae in a series of incubation experiments. A short-time (~1 h) functional response experiment with a wide range of prey concentrations (0.5–16 prey l−1, initial concentration) revealed that ingestion rates increased linearly over this range, such that clearance rates were similar between the different prey concentrations. This suggests that A. aurita is capable of efficiently utilizing dense prey patches. This indication was further supported by a linear increase of prey captured by A. aurita during 2.5 h of feeding at extremely high prey concentration (>200 prey l−1). Clearance rate in darkness scaled with jellyfish diameter to a power of ~1.7 for jellyfish 3.9–9.5 cm in diameter. The jellyfish did not alter their umbrella pulse frequency in response to presence of fish larvae. There were no significant differences between A. aurita feeding rates in light and darkness for yolk sac prey ages 0–7 days (at 7.5°C). Although prey vision and escape abilities of fish may develop rapidly during early larval ontogeny, these factors apparently have little impact on interactions with predators such as A. aurita during the yolk sac stage.  相似文献

Egg production rates of Calanus glacialis (Jaschnov) were measured in the laboratory (in 1985) and in the field (in 1983–1984). In the laboratory, daily egg production was studied over one month at alternating feeding and fasting conditions. Spawning ceased after 3 d of starvation and started as soon as females were reintroduced to food. Egg production increased stepwise at 3-d intervals. Females survived more than nine months in captivity. In the field, egg production was measured during PREMIZEX 1983 and MIZEX 1984 at 5 and 16 stations, respectively. High egg production was found in polynyas on the East Greenland Shelf, where melt water induced stratification which supported a spring bloom. Highest egg production was converted into 6.1% body carbon female-1 d-1. Under thick pack-ice no eggs were spawned. Spawning was induced in females from a station with low food abundance by feeding them on board ship. These results from both experiments and field studies show that egg production in C. glacialis is closely related to food availability. Thus, C. glacialis exhibits a reproductive behavior similar to that of C. finmarchicus, but not C. hyperboreus, the other two dominant species in this region.  相似文献

Reproductive modes and egg production were studied in 15 species of meso- and bathypelagic copepods from nine Calanoida families in the Arctic Ocean. During shipboard incubation, females of seven species released eggs freely into the water and females of three species produced membrane-bound egg sacs. One species, Aetideopsis rostrata, produced a mass of eggs looking like an egg sac, but the “sac” lacked a membrane and disintegrated within 2 h. Females of four additional species were encountered with membrane-bound egg sacs in the preserved samples. In most families, only one reproductive mode, either egg-carrying (the Euchaetidae, Augaptilidae), or broadcast spawning (the Heterorhabdidae, Spinocalanidae, Scolecitrichidae, Tharybidae, Bathypontiidae) was observed. In contrast, different genera of the Aetideidae family demonstrated different reproductive modes, with broadcast spawning predominant in the benthopelagic species, and both broadcast spawning and egg-brooding in the planktonic species. Clutch size and egg diameter varied widely between species in both broadcast spawners and egg-brooders. In broadcast spawners, the clutch size varied from 1 to 95 eggs female−1, while the average egg diameter ranged from 152 to 440 μm. The clutch size for egg brooders varied between 3 and 82, while average egg diameter varied from 258 to 732 μm. Deep-water broadcast spawners produced much larger eggs compared to surface-dwelling broadcast spawning species. This larger egg size may result in a reduction, or elimination, of feeding during naupliar stages, thereby improving the survival potential of deep-water species.  相似文献

Reproductive activity and production of the calanoid copepods Calanus helgolandicus and Calanoides carinatus were measured during a summer upwelling event off the coast of NW Spain. The upwelling pattern affected the distribution and fecundity of both species in the study area. The demographic composition of both populations and the stage of gonad maturation (e.g. the high abundance of fertilised females with mature ova) indicated active reproduction. C. carinatus, a highly fecund species associated with the African upwelling zones and considered as an upwelling specialist, showed low production rates (overall means of 15 eggs female–1 day–1 and 3% body C day–1), despite the fact that the food conditions (high phytoplankton biomass dominated by diatoms) seemed to be optimal for this species. By contrast, C. helgolandicus, a temperate species that shows a strong link between spring phytoplankton blooms and reproduction time, seems to be flexible enough to take full advantage of shorter-term, enhanced feeding conditions associated with the pulsed nature of the summer coastal upwelling. Both the egg and carbon-specific production rates attained by this species (overall means of 26 eggs female–1 day–1 and 12% body C day–1) were similar to values reported for a spring bloom situation. This high production would imply a long spring–summer recruitment event of C. helgolandicus in these waters. For both species the stage of gonad maturation was significantly correlated with their egg production rates and likely influenced by the food conditions; a species-specific nutritional requirement for final oogenesis is suggested. The carbon condition factor (carbon weight/prosome volume) of C. carinatus females was higher than that of C. helgolandicus, suggesting differential use of the carbon ingested; C. helgolandicus seems to use all ingested carbon to produce eggs at a high rates, whereas C. carinatus seems to store part of the ingested carbon as lipid reserves to ensure female survival and to support production during subsequent unfavourable food conditions.Communicated by S.A.
