Digestive ability by means of hydrolytic enzyme activities was studied in Leptosynapta galliennei (Herapath, 1865) and two other shallow-water deposit-feeding holothuroids: L. inhaerens (O. F. Müller, 1776) and Holothuria (Panningothuria) forskali (Delle Chiaje, 1828). The holothuroids were collected throughout the year at Roscoff (Britanny, France) from 1980 to 1985, except for L. inhaerens, which was collected in Galway Bay (Ireland) in June/July 1980. Using 25 substrates, the activity of 21 enzymes were recorded to detect hydrolysis of esters (5 substrates), glycosidic bonds (12 substrates) and peptide bonds (8 substrates). The activities of the homogenates of various parts of the gut as well as the digestive juice were measured. Esters and relatively long-chained fatty acids (up to C14) were hydrolysed. Significant hydrolysis of naturally occurring disaccharides and starch (reserve carbohydrate) occurred. The holothuroids were also able to digest hydrolysis products of cellulose and chitin. This may also indicate a capacity to digest the products of complex compounds such as glycolipids or glyco-proteins. Exopeptidases capable of hydrolyzing peptides were present, but endopeptidases able to digest proteolytic chains were not. Most enzymatic activities occurred in all parts of the gut, but some were strictly localized, usually to the anterior intestine. Extracellular digestion of fatty acids, starch and saccharose occurred only in this latter digestive segment. Disaccharidases and peptidases are linked to the plasma membrane of enterocytes. Enzymatic activities associated with lysosomes occur throughout the gut. The diet of shallow-water holothuroids is omnivorous, with a marked preference for food of vegetable origin. Annelids and holothuroids possess a similar capacity to hydrolyse most types of bonds, including peptide bonds. The chemical nature of detritus and its relationship to the nutritional requirements of detritivores must be defined, and gut-retention time ascertained, to discover if different digestive strategies are developed by different detritivores to exploit the same food source in a given environment.  相似文献

The effect of simulated predation upon the secondary production and P:B (production:biomass) ratio of the polychaete Capitella capitata (Type I) was estimated from laboratory studies. The first method (the maximum sustainable yield, MSY, method) summed net increases in biomass of each population over time with biomass exploited by predation. In the specific growth-rate method, experimentally determined specific-growth rates were applied to changes in size classes and standing stock over time, providing another estimate of production for comparison to the MSY method. Predation had a pronounced effect on the magnitude of production, standing stocks, and hence the P:B ratio causing a fourfold difference in P:B ratios between the controls (P:B=4.9) and the 23% wk-1 predation rate (P:B=19.6). Production reached a high of 87 g ash-free dry wt m-2 yr-1 in the highest predation treatment (23% wk-1). An estimate of the number of individuals recruited in each population showed that predation caused an increase in population turnover rate. Gross ecological efficiency (calories of food ingested by the predator/calories of food consumed by the prey) and food-chain efficiency (calories of prey ingested by the predator/calories of food supplied to the prey) were 7.4 and 5.8% respectively, for the 23% wk-1 predation treatment.  相似文献

The adsorption of some heavy metals onto the walls of harvested, washed, and dried non-living biomass cells of different Pseudomonas strains was studied at optimum experimental conditions using a simplified single component system. The Langmuir adsorption model was found to be a suitable approach to describe the system via multi-step processes. Isotherms measured at 30.0°C and pH 5.5 with [M]total?=?10–100 mM for tight, reversible Cr6+(aq), Ni2+(aq), Cu2+(aq) and Cd2+(aq) binding by the cell walls of the investigated biomass fit the Langmuir model and give the pH-independent stoichiometric site capacities ν i and equilibrium constants K i for metal binding at specific biomass sites i?=?A, B, C, and D. Tight binding sites A, B, and D of the non-living biomass are occupied by CrVI, sites A and C by NiII, sites A and D by CdII, and only site B by CuII. It is concluded that ν i is a stoichiometric parameter that is independent of the magnitude of K i for binding site i and that the studied heavy metals selectively and tightly bind at different biomass sites.  相似文献

Maximal rates of oxygen consumption in vitro have been measured under standardized conditions at three test temperatures (5°, 15°, and 25°C) on minced preparations of white muscle from 39 species of shallow-water marine teleost fishes. These fishes came from four different geographic areas, two with cool average water-temperatures (near 15°C: coastal southern California, Galápagos Islands) and two with warm average water-temperatures (near 25°C: Hawaiian Islands; Bermuda). The group includes species covering much of the range of variation to be found among the teleosts with respect to five additional variables: phylogenetic position, type of environment, body weight, activity level, and growth stage. The purpose of the work is to provide part of a base line of tissue-metabolism data on shallow-water fishes for comparison with similar results from deep-sea species. Major conclusions from statistical analyses of the results are: four groups of shapes of oxygen-uptake rate versus temperature curves exist: normal, flat, dipped and peaked. Over 50% of curves are normal. Intra-group differences, contributing significantly to the total variance of the results at given test temperatures, are: cool versus warm average environmental temperatures primarily for epipelagic species; epipelagic versus non-epipelagic environments; very active species versus all others; juvenile stages versus adults. In each case, the subgroup first mentioned shows higher muscle oxygen-uptake rates than the other subgroup. Variables not contributing significantly to the total variance are phylogenetic position and body weight. Physiological and ecological implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Individuals and populations of Odontaster validus Koehler differed markedly among different habitats, as revealed in a study from October 1984 through January 1986 in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. At McMurdo Station, individual sizes (wet weight) and population biomass (g wet wt m-2 and kJ m-2) decreased significantly with increasing depth. Individuals from shallow (10 to 20 m) habitats were in superior nutritional condition to those from deeper water (30 and 165 m), as shown by higher gonad and pyloric cecum indexes, and by higher lipid and energetic levels in the pyloric ceca. Moreover, gonadal output (reproductive output) was higher in shallow-water individuals. Higher levels of chlorophyll in the pyloric ceca and richer yellow to red coloration of the body wall in the shallow-water individuals indicate that they utilize the higher levels of primary production at shallow depths. At East Cape Armitage, where nearly permanent, thick, snow-covered ice most of the year resulted in very low levels of benthic primary production, the lowdensity sea stars were all very small and nutritionally similar to the deep-water individuals at McMurdo Station. At Cape Evans, where the generally snow-free sea-ice that broke up in mid-summer resulted in a luxurient benthic cover of diatoms and macroalgae, the sea stars were smaller than at McMurdo Station at comparable depths, but population densities were higher, resulting in 4 to 9 times greater biomass. Growth rates of sea stars fed in the laboratory were very low, especially compared to laboratory-reared temperate and tropical species; well-fed individuals need about 9 yr to reach 30 g wet weight, near the mean size of shallowwater individuals at McMurdo Station. No growth was detected in individuals caged at McMurdo Station for one year, suggesting even lower growth rates in the field. The stable size-frequency distributions at the different sites and depths throughout the year-long study suggest highly stable populations with low temporal variability in recruitment, migration and mortality. These data indicate that individuals and populations of O. validus quantitatively and qualitatively reflect the general level of productivity of a habitat. Differences noted in size, coloration, nutrition, and reproductive effort may be the result of long-term integration of local levels of primary production. These ubiquitous sea stars may serve as a biotic indicator of productivity in localized habitats around the continental shelf of Antarctica.  相似文献

Benthic community respiration was measured in situ at 9 stations along the Gay Head-Bermuda transect from depths of 40 to 5200 m. Three methods were used; bell jar respirometers, grab respirometers, and free vehicle respirometers. Benthic community respiration rates spanned three orders of magnitude, decreasing from 21.5 ml O2 m-2 h-1 at 40 m in November to 0.02 ml O2 m-2 h-1 at 5200 m. Rates decreased two orders of magnitude between 40 and 1800 m and then significantly declined again between the continental rise (3650 m) and the abyssal plain stations. Predictive equations for benthic community respiration along the transect reflect a strong correlation with depth of water. Of lesser significance are the correlations with water temperature, dissolved oxygen, benthic animal biomass, surface primary productivity and sediment organic matter. Calculations show that annual benthic respiration can utilize 1 to 2% of the surface primary productivity. Of the 2 to 7% organic carbon fixed at the surface which supposedly reaches the bottom, only 15 to 29% is utilized by the benthic community at 2200, 3000, and 3650 m. The energy requirements of other biological components of deep-sea benthic communities, such as benthopelagic and macro-epibenthic animals, not included in these measurements, must also be considered in calculating a balance of carbon.Contribution from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.  相似文献

Taxonomic composition, biomass as organic carbon, numerical abundance, and size distribution of the microplankton were determined at 6 Southern California nearshore locations in late May–early June, 1970. Samples were taken at approximately 5 m (10 m at one station) intervals through the upper 40 to 50 m to reveal some of the small-scale differences and levels of variability in the populations. Total microplankton biomass over all euphotic zone samples varied by more than two orders of magnitude (7.6 to 1,200 g C l-1). Average biomass at comparable sites (n=5) ranged from 48 to 240 g C l-1; biomass range within stations varied from about 5-fold to 120-fold. Total microplankton numbers varied approximately 22-fold (4.3×105 to 9.5×106 organisms l-1) over all euphotic zone samples, but the range within stations was always less than an order of magnitude. At comparable stations, nanoplankton biomass had ranges extending from 3.7-fold to 12-fold; its average percentage contribution (±1 SD) to the total microplankton biomass varied from 39±5% to 54±13%. Netplankton biomass showed a similar minimal range, but its greatest range was more than two orders of magnitude. Ranges of abundance of major taxonomic groups within stations varied considerably from about 2-fold to more than three orders of magnitude. The small-scale variability of the populations probably affects the reliability of the microplankton as a food source for pelagic consumers.  相似文献

In deep waters, deposit-feeding holothurians represent a high percentage of the total abyssal biomass and play an important ecological role in sediment modification. The feeding of these organisms, which inhabit a nutritively poor environment, has been studied by means of analyses of intestinal contents. Four abundant species: Psychropotes longicauda Theel, Paroriza pallens (Koehler), Benthogone rosea Koehler and Molpadia blakei (Theel), collected between 2000 and 4500 m in the Bay of Biscay during three cruises organized by CNEXO-COB, were chosen for this study. The morphological characteristics of the ingested alimentary particles are described and the results of analyses of the organic matter in the guts reported. The species studied do not exhibit a strict alimentary diet; 16 types of presumably nutritive particles were distinguished in the foregut. The nutritional sources for these holothurians mainly consist of organo-mineral aggregates, faecal matter and organic incrustations on mineral particles. Selection is for those detritus particles which are richest in bio-available compounds; a negative selection for living organisms is apparent. The finest fraction of the sediment (which is also the richest in organic matter) is also ingested. The concentrations of organic carbon and nitrogen in the sediment found in the foreguts are about 4 times and 6 times greater, respectively, than the concentrations in the environmental sediment. During passage through the intestines, assimilation of organic carbon and nitrogen is 15 and 22%, respectively; assimilation is maximal in the ascending intestine loop.

Measurements of routine swimming speed, tail-flip escape responses, and oxygen consumptions were made of the deep-sea shrimp Acanthephyra eximia using autonomous landers in the Rhodos Basin at depths of up to 4,400 m and temperatures of 13–14.5°C. Routine swimming speeds at 4,200 m averaged 0.18 m s–1 or 3.09 body lengths s–1, approximately double those of functionally similar oceanic scavengers. During escape responses peak accelerations of 23 m s–2 or 630.6 body lengths s–2 were recorded, with animals reaching speeds of 1.61 m s–1 or 34.8 body lengths s–2. When compared to shallow-water decapods at similar temperatures these values are low for a lightly calcified shrimp such as A. eximia despite a maximum muscle mass specific power output of 90.0 W kg–1. A preliminary oxygen consumption measurement indicated similar rates to those of oceanic crustacean scavengers and shallower-living Mediterranean crustaceans once size and temperature had been taken into account. These animals appear to have high routine swimming speeds but low burst muscle performances. This suite of traits can be accounted for by high competition for limited resources in the eastern Mediterranean, but low selective pressure for burst swimming due to reductions in predator pressure.Communicated by J.P. Spawning behaviors observed from May 1981 through August 1983 in the laboratory and field are described and compared for twelve species of northeast Pacific holothuroids collected from waters of the San Juan Archipelago, Washington. For many species, elevation of the anterior end, stretching of the introvert, tentacle waving, and swaying are behaviors commonly associated with gamete release. Less common activities include waving of introvert podia, waves of body wall contractions, errant males, aggregations, and pseudocopulation. Positively buoyant eggs of four species [Psolus chitonoides Clark, Cucumaria miniata (Brandt), C. piperata (Stimpson), and C. fallax (Ludwig)] were packaged in pellets, ropes, or strands and released passively; a female Molpadia intermedia (Ludwig) discharged negatively buoyant eggs in a single explosive burst. Two externally brooding sea cucumbers [C. lubrica (Clark) and C. pseudocurata Deichmann] produced strands of dilution-resistant sperm that were carried by currents to nearby females. Three species commonly sympatric [P. chitonoides, C. miniata, and Eupentacta quinquesemita (Selenka)] in high-current rocky habitats have overlapping spring breeding seasons, but spawn at different hours of the day. Please address all requests for reprints to Dr. McEuen at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution  相似文献

Specimens of the hydrothermal vent clam Calyptogena magnifica were collected at a depth of 2 600 m from 21° N on the East Pacific Rise in spring, 1982. The elemental composition was determined for the total soft tissues, individual organs, and the shell. The soft parts contained high concentrations of a number of trace metals. Iron, copper, and zinc, at 760, 148 and 2 152 g g-1 dry weight, respectively, were present at the highest concentrations. Silver and antimony exhibited the greatest enrichments when their concentrations in C. magnifica were compared with those measured in a shallow-water marine mussel, Mytilus edulis. In contrast to the soft parts, the shell was not a site of metal accumulation or deposition. Within the soft parts; gills, kidney, pericardium, and mantle were involved in the concentration of various metals; the degree of concentration varied depending on the particular metal under consideration. C. magnifica possesses metal body burdens which are ordinarily considered to be very high and potentially toxic in other species.  相似文献

The energy of the body components and the energy costs of spawning and overwintering in the bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli, the most abundant fish in Chesapeake Bay, were studied to determine seasonal variability during the different stages of its life cycle. Bimonthly samples were collected by trawl from April 1990 through October 1991. Fish condition and body energy levels fluctuated seasonally, and were related to anchovy size. Energy equivalents (cal g-1 dry wt) was highest in December, before the overwintering period. The somatic weight component increased by 32 to 33% and total body weight by 26% during the spawning season, indicating that feeding not only met energy requirements of daily spawning but also provided surplus energy for growth. The overwintering loss of energy was 33 to 35% of total body calories, and was primarily derived from deposit fat in somatic and visceral tissues.  相似文献

We captured two species of deep-sea zoarcids, Melanostigma pammelas and Lycodapus mandibularis, from Monterey Bay California and maintained them in the laboratory. One shallow-water zoarcid, Eucryphycus californicus, and an ecologically and morphologically similar stichaeid fish Xiphister atropurpureus were collected from intertidal and subtidal habitats in Monterey Bay. We investigated the absorption and assimilation efficiencies of these fishes to determine whether deep-sea species have evolved mechanisms to increase their efficiency of food use. Fishes were placed in experimental chambers and fed a known quantity of food. Ammonia excretion was measured and feces were collected daily. Both food and feces were analyzed for water, protein, lipid and ash to determine specific absorption efficiencies. Absorption ranged from 87.7 to 92.4% and assimilation efficiencies from 84.0 to 86.5%. Meal sizes from 0.5 to 4.0% of body weight did not affect the results. No significant differences were found between deep-sea and shallow-water species fed single meals or fed ad libitum for 10 days. This suggests that the selective pressure to maximize absorption and assimilation is universal and is not affected by the productivity of the habitat occupied. However, the relative size of the intestine in the deep-sea species was significantly smaller suggesting that they had a lower metabolic cost to maintain their digestive apparatus. It could not be concluded whether this was the result of pressure to conserve energy or rather the tendency of the shallow-living species to ingest more refractory material (i.e. sediment, algae).  相似文献

The 17-year time-series study at Station M in the NE Pacific has provided one of the longest datasets on deep-sea ophiuroids to date. Station M is an abyssal site characterized by low topographical relief and seasonal and interannual variation in surface-derived food inputs. From 1989 to 2005, over 31,000 ophiuroid specimens were collected. Size–frequency distributions of the four dominant species, Ophiura bathybia, Amphilepis patens, Amphiura carchara and Ophiacantha cosmica, were examined for recruitment and the role of surface-derived food supplies on body size distributions. Juveniles were collected in sediment traps and used to investigate settlement patterns and seasonality. Trawl samples showed no indication of seasonal changes in recruitment to larger size classes; however, there was evidence of seasonal settling of juveniles. Interannual differences in median disk diameters and size distributions of trawl-collected adults are greater than those at the seasonal scale. Three of the four species, O. bathybia, A. patens and O. cosmica, had co-varying monthly median disk diameters, suggesting they may have a similar factor(s) controlling their growth and abundance. Interannual differences in monthly size distributions were generally greater than those between seasons. Cross-correlations between the particulate organic carbon (POC) flux (food supply) and size distribution indices for O. bathybia, A. patens and O. cosmica all were significant indicating that increases in food supply were followed by increases in the proportion of smaller size classes after approximately 17–22 months. These findings suggest that food inputs are indeed an important factor influencing deep-sea ophiuroid populations on interannual time scales, more generally supporting the long-hypothesized connection between food availability and population size structure in the deep sea. In the period between September 1986 and August 1988, using an otter trawl, a total of 50 species from 30 families were captured in Sulaibikhat Bay, Kuwait. The dominant species were Liza carinata (Valenciennes), Pomadasys stridens (Forrskal) and Leiognathus brevirostris (Valenciennes). Although the total number of fishes captured in 1986–1987 and 1987–1988 differed by an order of magnitude, the seasonal changes in numbers, biomass and number of species in the intertidal and subtidal zones were consistent. Unbalanced three-way analysis of variance showed that significantly larger numbers of fishes and number of species, but not biomass, were captured in the intertidal at night compared to the intertidal during the day. This difference may be due to both increased net efficiency and movement of fishes into the intertidal zone at night to avoid piscivorous fishes that move from deep water into shallower water. During the day few fish are present in the intertidal zone and this may be to avoid predation by piscivorous birds. Several species of fishes were shown to have different patterns of behaviour during the diel period.  相似文献

The quantity and biochemical composition of organic matter (OM) in the sediments underlying and below oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) in the Arabian Sea were studied to provide information on the diagenetic processes of organic carbon under different environmental conditions. Concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and total hydrolysable amino acids (THAA) were significantly higher in sediments within rather than below OMZ, while those of total carbohydrates (TCHO) were slightly lower in the latter, suggesting the presence of a larger supply of labile compounds into the sea bottom at the shallower site (i.e. within OMZ). Hydrolysable amino acid and carbohydrate contribution to TOC were even lower (about 10% in surficial sediments) than the values obtained from the abyssal oligotrophic North Pacific, suggesting that OM food availability in the Oman Margin sediments within OMZ was lower than that observed at abyssal depths. The presence of the highest THAA and TCHO concentrations in the top 40?mm of the sediment core at both sites reflected the presence of bioturbation processes. In contrast with the general view of the deep sea as a stable and constant system, below OMZ in the Arabian Sea sediments, some differences were observed in the two investigated cores indicating the presence of a certain spatial variability in OM content and diagenesis.  相似文献

The demersal fish fauna of Albatross Bay, in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia, was sampled on seven cruises from August 1986 to November 1988, using a random stratified trawl survey. Four depth zones between 7 and 45 m were sampled during both day and night. The mean biomass of fish from all seven cruises was 297 kg ha–1 for days trawls and 128 kg ha–1 for night trawls. The overall mean catch rates were 922 kg h–1 for day trawls and 412 kg h–1 for night trawls. There were marked differences between cruises in both the biomass and catch rate. Approx 890 000 fish of 237 species were collected. Of these, 25 species comprised 82% of the total biomass and 74% of the overall catch rate. The dominant families were Leiognathidae, Haemulidae and Clupeidae, with Sciaenidae and Dasyatidae important at night.Leiognathus bindus was the most abundant species. Twenty-five species occurred in more than 50% of trawls, withCaranx bucculentus the most frequently caught (96% of all trawls). Thirty four species were predators on prawns; their absolute mean biomass was 50 kg ha–1 during the day and 39 kg ha–1 at night. The corresponding catch rates were 171 and 125 kg h–1. Multiple-regression analyses were used to discriminate the effects of diel, seasonal, depth and cruise patterns. Of the 31 most abundant species, 15 showed diel patterns of abundance; 11 species showed seasonal patterns of abundance; 23 species had differential depth distribution; and 13 species showed significant cruise-to-cruise variation in abundance. Cruise variations in abundance were tested against salinity, temperature, tidal exchange, plankton biomass and prawn abundances as well as periods (and lags) of total rainfall prior to sampling. Only total rainfall showed any significant correlation. Total rainfall over a period of 6 wk immediately prior to sampling showed significant positive correlations with the abundances of five species, with overall daytime catch rates, and with the suite of 34 prawn predators. Rainfall and river runoff into Albatross Bay were significantly correlated. In Albatross Bay, the complex of factors affecting fish abundances and the magnitude of between-cruise differences indicate that such tropical communities may be unpredictable and are not seasonally constant. The high catch rates in Albatross Bay relative to similar tropical areas elsewhere are discussed and attributed to the light exploitation of the Albatross Bay stocks. Other than a prawn fishery, there is no commercial trawling in Albatross Bay. Hence, the only fishing mortality is a result of by-catch from prawn trawling. The annual total of such fish by-catch is probably less than 10% of the estimated standing stock of 93 000 tonnes.  相似文献

I quantified the effects of parasitism by the isopod Probopyrus pandalicola on energy flow through the host Palaemonetes pugio by comparing secondary production, metabolism, ingestion, and egestion by unparasitized laboratory shrimp populations to the same parameters for parasitized groups during 10 months. The effects of parasitism on host growth and metabolism vary from month to month. Temperature, season, host age, sex, and reproductive condition affect energetics for host-parasite systems. Probopyrus pandalicola has little effect on host assimilation efficiency. However, tissue growth efficiences during most study months were higher for control shrimp than parasitized shrimp. These differences between groups were of lesser magnitude when parasite production was considered in the calculations. Trophic level energy intake efficiency for parasites was of the order of 6 to 10% throughout much of the study—the highest values were calculated during the parasites' reproductive months. Through parasitic castration, P. pandalicola significantly affects host energetics. Significantly, parasite reproduction was often of the same magnitude as reproduction by unparasitized hosts, although parasite biomass accounts for only about 4% of the total host-parasite system biomass.  相似文献

The morphometry of the sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus from habitats of contrasting algal abundance but of similar urchin density was examined at two localities in southern New Zealand during 1993. Populations from habitats of high algal abundance (Dusky Sound) had similar relationships of demipyramid (jaws) to test diameter, but individuals had significantly smaller jaws relative to their test diameter than those from a locality where algal abundance was low (Arapawa Island). The body wall mass (in relation to total wet weight) was similar for populations from both localities but, for Dusky Sound populations, individuals from exposed sites had greater relative body mass than those from sheltered sites. The ratios of gonad weight:total weight were similar between localities. However, E. chloroticus from Arapawa Island reached reproductive maturity at a smaller size than those from Dusky Sound. Growth rates of E. chloroticus varied among localities in Dusky Sound. Growth was modelled by the Tanaka function, which allows for rapid early growth until reproductive maturity is reached and declining growth rates thereafter. The results show that sea urchins respond to low resource availability by increasing the size of the food-gathering apparatus, maturing at a smaller size, and growing to a smaller size than individuals from food-rich habitats. Lucina pectinata is a large tropical Lucinidae which is characterized by abundant tissue hemoglobin in its deep-red gills. In the present paper, hemoglobin is described as being located in cytoplasmic dark patches of the bacteriocytes together with a cystine-rich protein. Large microbodies contain a non-hemoglobin heme-compound which is identified with a previously described non-protein-bound hematin; however, it has not been established whether this heme is involved in a sulphur-oxidizing system or represents a catabolic by-product of hemoglobin. Electron-lucent vesicles are associated with the basal microbodies but their function is, so far, unknown. In addition, the bacteriocytes have been observed to have direct contact with sea water, modulated by large intercalary cells which overlap the bacteriocytes on their margin. Such relationships between bacteriocytes and intercalary cells, as well as their cytological features, are different from those observed in lucinid species inhabiting sea-grass beds, but very similar to those observed in Calyptogena magnifica. From the congruence between the shallow-water Lucinidae L. pectinata, inhabiting mangrove swamps, and the deep-sea Vesicomyidae C. magnifica, found at hydrothermal vents, we conclude that such features are likely to be adaptative to high-sulphide environments, notwithstanding the phylogenetic distance.  相似文献
