In this study, we investigated the effect of numerous regulations enforced since 1985 to improve air quality on ozone in Europe with the focus on Switzerland, using the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) for a specific summer period. Several emission scenarios for the year 2010 were also considered. The model results suggest that the emission reductions of ozone precursors should have been effective to reduce ozone production between 1985 and 2000 in northern Switzerland. However, observations do not indicate any significant change in surface ozone levels since early 1990s, except in the region of Zurich where there is a small negative trend. On the other hand, the model predictions match very well the spatial variability of the trends but the calculated trends are around 0.5 ppb year−1 lower than those observed. This difference is similar to the background ozone increase as suggested by the long-term observations at the high Alpine station Jungfraujoch. These results support the hypothesis that the decrease in local ozone production due to emission reductions might have been partly or completely compensated by the simultaneous increase in the background ozone. In 2010, a strict application of the Gothenburg Protocol in Europe would lead to a decrease in peak ozone concentrations by about 5% in Switzerland under the meteorological conditions applied. Our calculations also indicated that emission controls only in Switzerland would not be very effective to improve the air quality in the future. The further development of the background ozone will in any case be very important for the tropospheric ozone levels.  相似文献

The Optimal Allocation of Conservation Funds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper presents a framework to evaluate alternative designs of conservation programs and their implications for the allocation of conservation funds. We show that the efficient allocation of conservation funds must consider two important “pooling” effects—cumulative effects and interrelationships among alternative environmental benefits. Ignoring the cumulative effects of environmental benefits may cause conservation funds to be overly dispersed geographically and, as a result, may result in minimum environmental benefits when the budget is small. Ignoring the interrelationships among alternative environmental benefits may result in not only misallocation of conservation funds among geographical areas, but also incorrect resources being targeted for conservation practices. Implications of these results for the design of conservation programs are discussed.  相似文献

In temperate passerines, increased testosterone (T) levels during breeding mediate male aggressive and mating behaviour. If individual variability in T levels is reflected in behavioural differences during mating, males with higher T might gain higher reproductive success. This can be tested experimentally by elevating T levels. However, high exogenous T levels are known to have negative effects on male sperm production. This may reduce male fitness, particularly if sperm competition is intense. We experimentally elevated T levels in breeding blue tit males to investigate how T levels above the natural mean influence male reproductive success. Contrary to most—if not all—previous experimental manipulations of T levels in birds, we restricted the treatment with exogenous T to the time when females were fertile and T levels were naturally high in males. In blue tits, extra-pair paternity is an important component of male reproductive success, and its frequency is likely influenced by androgen-mediated behaviours such as mate attraction and aggression towards other males. Here we show that T-males were equally likely to become cuckolded and did not gain more extra-pair paternity than control males. Cuckolded T-males, however, lost more paternity than control males. We discuss the possibility that this is caused by negative effects of T treatment on sperm production.Communicated by M. Webster  相似文献

The sea urchin, Sterechinus neumayeri, has a circumpolar distribution and is an abundant species in benthic communities of the Antarctic. Reproduction occurs during austral spring, when ozone concentrations over the past 25 years have been reduced by 50% or more, potentially exposing the planktonic embryos and larvae to elevated levels of UVB. During spring of 1996, cultures of S. neumayeri embryos incubated under ambient and partitioned sunlight (minus UVB) at static depths between 0 and 7 m were analyzed for DNA damage [cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs)] and morphological abnormalities. At 0-m and 1-m depths, nearly 100% of embryos developed abnormally, even under UVB-shielded conditions where little or no DNA damage accumulated. At depths >3 m, reduced or no abnormality was evident and DNA damage was negligible. Although UVB contributed to 0–65% of solar-induced abnormalities, the mean contribution was 11±17% and UVB was not primarily responsible for observed defects in urchin development. Moreover, developmental responses were not linearly related to ambient UVB gradients as might be expected, but are better characterized relative to threshold levels of total UVB exposure. Accumulated exposures of 25 kJ m–2 ambient UVB caused minimal DNA damage and allowed normal embryological development to proceed. Higher UVB exposures (especially 80 kJ m–2) precluded normal development. An ancillary threshold limit of 17 CPDs mb–1 has been identified as the level of DNA damage that proscribes abnormal development. While higher wavelengths of UVA and visible light are not affected by ozone concentration and do not initiate significant CPD DNA damage, they did interfere significantly with the embryological development of S. neumayeri. It is concluded that exposure to increased UVB during recent Antarctic ozone-depletion cycles probably has only a small degree of impact relative to the magnitude of other solar effects on the developmental success of Sterechinus embryos, or compared to spawning seasons before ozone depletion (i.e., years prior to 1978).Communicated by P.W. It is difficult for public agencies to make optimal reserve-site selections without knowing how new public reserves might influence the configuration of private conservation. Private land trusts protect much land in the USA, but little is known about how private groups respond to conservation decisions made by other conservation agents. To fill that gap, we analyze township-level spatial data on conservation in California, Illinois, and Massachusetts to explore relationships between the location of private and public conservation land. Using linear spatial-econometric models and Bayesian spatial probit models, we find evidence that private-protected acres are clustered together in space. In California, it appears that private land conservation is attracted towards places where the government has reserves. In Illinois and Massachusetts, however, it appears that private conservation shifts away from townships with government reserves due to a mixture of spatial repulsion and simple acreage displacement.  相似文献

In the regulation of pollutant emissions, a regulator may treat different sources (with different costs and environmental damage) as though they were the same—for institutional, informational, or transaction cost reasons. This may occur despite the efficiency gains from regulatory differentiation of sources. This issue has been a source of much controversy in the environmental economics literature and is examined here from a theoretical perspective. Using a two pollutant economy, emissions and net social benefits are compared for the case of efficient, differentiated regulation and the case of uniform, undifferentiated regulation of the aggregate of the two pollutants. We show when aggregate emissions will be greater than, equal to, or less than efficient emissions and we derive conditions for each of these three possibilities. Further, we show that when marginal costs and benefits become more steeply sloped, the inefficiency associated with undifferentiated regulation increases.  相似文献

Summary The roles of sexes in the nest defence behavior of monogamous willow tit (Parus montanus) were studied near Oulu, northern Finland, in 1988–1990. The relative roles of the sexes changed during the breeding cycle: females defended their nests more vigorously before hatching and males defended more after hatching. This sexual asymmetry was studied by means of the cost/benefit model of optimal parental investment (PI). Because of the monogamous breeding system, sexual differences in future benefits were not a likely explanation for the asymmetry. This was also supported by preliminary results of DNA-fingerprinting analyses. Behavioral observations — sex-role reversal, high correlation between the mates, and equal variations in male and female behavior — indicated the same. In the beginning of the breeding cycle, higher female defence was related to renesting potential. The extra costs of renesting are considerably higher for females than for males, and therefore, females appeared to benefit more than males in keeping the first clutch alive while renesting was still possible. Such a female strategy was possible in this northern population, since the time for renesting was rather short and never lasted beyond the hatching of the first nests. After this point, the male can only invest in the present clutch. By the end of the breeding cycle, increased defence of the nest by males may be a consequence of males being larger and/or in better condition than females. Therefore, in the latter half of the breeding cycle, the sexual differences in nest defence did not indicate any sexual difference in PI. The asynchronous arrival of the parents at the nest also affected individual responses, indicating that defending the nest is a dynamic process.  相似文献

This paper studies the effects of a tax on energy use in a growth model where market structure is endogenous and jointly determined with the rate of technological change. Because this economy does not exhibit the scale effect (a positive relation between TFP growth and aggregate R&D), the tax has no effect on the steady-state growth rate. It has, however, important transitional effects that give rise to surprising results. Specifically, under the plausible assumption that energy demand is inelastic, there may exist a hump-shaped relation between the energy tax and welfare. This shape stems from the fact that the reallocation of resources from energy production to manufacturing triggers a temporary acceleration of TFP growth that generates a √-shaped time profile of consumption. If endogenous technological change raises consumption sufficiently fast and by a sufficient amount in the long run, and households are sufficiently patient, the tax raises welfare despite the fact that—in line with standard intuition—it lowers consumption in the short run.  相似文献

Closed capture-recapture (CR) estimators have been used extensively to estimate population size. Most closed CR approaches have been developed and evaluated for discrete-time models, but there has been little effort to evaluate their continuous-time counterparts. Continuous-time estimators — developed using maximum likelihood theory by Craig (1953) and Darroch (1958), and martingale theory by Becker (1984) — that allow capture probabilities to vary over time were evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Overall, the ML estimators had a smaller MSE. The estimators performed well when model assumptions were upheld, and were somewhat robust to heterogeneity in capture probabilities. However, the estimators were not robust to behavioural effects in the capture probabilities. Time lag effects (periods when animals might be unavailable for immediate recapture) on continuous-time estimates were also investigated and results indicated a positive bias which was greater for smaller populations. There was no gain in performance when using a continuous-time estimator versus a discrete-time estimator on the same simulated data. Usefulness of the continuous-time approach may be limited to study designs where animals are easier to sample using continuous-time methodology.  相似文献

The main sources of reactive hydrocarbons (RHC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone precursors, in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP) in the southeast of Brazil are emissions from vehicles fleets. Ambient surface ozone and particulate matter concentrations are air quality problem in the MASP. This study examined the impact that implementing a control program for mobile emissions has on ozone concentrations, An episode of high surface ozone concentrations occurring in the MASP during the March 13–15, 2000 period was used as a case study that was modeled for photochemical oxidants using the California Institute of Technology/Carnegie Mellon University three-dimensional photochemical model. Different scenarios were analyzed in relationship to the implementation of the Programa Nacional de Controle de Poluição por Veículos Automotores (PROCONVE, National Program to Control Motor Vehicle Pollution). Scenario 1 assumed that all vehicles were operating within PROCONVE guidelines. Scenarios 2 and 3 considered hypothetical situations in which the PROCONVE was not implemented. Scenario 2 set the premise that vehicles were using pre-1989 technology, whereas scenario 3 allowed for technological advances. A base case scenario, in which the official emission inventory for the year 2000 was employed, was also analyzed. The CIT model results show agreement with most measurements collected during 13–15 March 2000 modeling episode. Mean normalized bias for ozone, CO, RHC and NO x are approximately 9.0, 6.0, ?8.3, 13.0%, respectively. Tropospheric ozone concentrations predicted for scenario 2 were higher than those predicted for scenarios 1, 3 and base case. This study makes a significant contribution to the evaluation of air quality improvement and provides data for use in evaluating the economic costs of implementing a program of motor vehicle pollution control aimed at protecting human health.  相似文献

如何减轻近地层臭氧(O3)体积分数持续升高对作物的影响是污染生态学研究的热点之一。运用改进的开顶式气室(open-top chambers,OTCs)装置,对嘉兴尖叶、嘉兴圆叶和荷兰35三种菠菜(Spinacia oleracea L.)进行连续5 d,每天8 h的臭氧急性暴露处理,且在暴露前24 h喷施300 mg.L-1质量浓度抗氧化剂ethylenediurea(EDU),研究EDU对臭氧胁迫下菠菜急性伤害症状及光合特性的影响。结果表明:(1)菠菜暴露于高体积分数O3时,叶片出现失水干枯、坏死斑等急性伤害症状,光合色素含量、气体交换参数和光响应参数显著降低,且下降幅度和暴露体积分数呈正相关。(2)菠菜经EDU处理后,光合特性参数明显提高。对O3和EDU作双因子分析发现,随着臭氧体积分数升高,EDU对叶片气体交换参数的影响显著,而对其他参数的影响不明显。由此可见,尽管EDU的防护作用对高体积分数的O3胁迫是有限的,但喷施EDU仍能有效减轻O3对植物的伤害,这对缓解农田生态系统O3污染灾害有积极意义。  相似文献

Two behaviorally distinct forms — courtship signal — (Form L and V) of Macrophthalmus japonicus (De Haan) are known. Monthly samples of each form were collected from two areas in Japan: Form L from Amakusa, western Kyushu, between April 1985 and February 1986; Form V from Fukuoka, northern Kyushu, between November 1982 and December 1983. Life-history traits were compared between two populations and discussed. Individuals from the Amakusa population grew more slowly and matured at a smaller size than those from the Fukuoka population. Maturation period and longevity did not differ significantly. In the first year of reproduction, females in the Fukuoka population produced more, and larger broods than those in the Amakusa population and crab mortality was higher in every age group. Egg size did not differ significantly. The major environmental factors — air-temperature, nitrogen content of the surface mud and period of aerial exposure were similar in both areas, and it is suggested that the differences in life-history exhibited by these crabs are genotypic, and perhaps related to their different form.  相似文献

Mate guarding is a male strategy to gain access to receptive females but often results in antagonistic interactions between the sexes because of different costs/benefits of guarding. In addition to social, morphological, and physiological parameters, the type of mating system should also affect the strength of the conflict and thus the guarding duration. Specifically, when compared to females, self-compatible hermaphrodites might have reduced benefits of outcrossing. We investigated mate guarding in dioecious (co-presence of females and males) and androdioecious (co-presence of hermaphrodites and males) branchiopod crustaceans. Both sexes in androdioecious systems should shift their guarding times to lower values relative to dioecious systems because (1) androdioecious males are present in lower percentages than dioecious males and thus encounter rates with receptive mates are relatively greater for them; and (2) hermaphrodites should have low incentive to incur high costs of mate guarding, having the alternative of self-fertilization, and thus should be highly eager to resist. While females preferred short guarding times, when allowed to control the guarding duration (males tethered), dioecious males did not increase their guarding duration when females (treated with muscular relaxant) could not resist, in contrast to what has previously been found for androdioecious males. This indicates that hermaphrodites are more willing to resist mate guarding than females. The among-species comparisons supported our hypotheses: compromised guarding times were significantly lower in androdioecious than in dioecious species. The introduction of a parameter (mating system) not previously investigated in mate guarding models resulted in a powerful test of mate guarding theory, adding a valuable contribution to our understanding of intersexual conflict.  相似文献

There is an increasing tendency to use markets to induce the provision of environmental services. As such markets increase in scope, potential market participants might sell multiple environmental services. The question we consider here is whether participants in such markets should be allowed to sell credits in more than one market simultaneously. Some have argued in favor of such “double-dipping”, because it would make the provision of environmental services more profitable. In practice however, most programs do not allow double-dipping. We show that if the optimal level of pollution abatement is sought, then double-dipping maximizes societal net benefits. However, if pollution policies are set in a piecemeal fashion, then the caps for each market are unlikely to be optimal and, in this second-best setting, a policy prohibiting double-dipping can lead to greater social net benefits. We explore conditions under which a single-market policy is preferred, or equivalently, where piecemeal policies are likely to yield particularly inefficient outcomes.  相似文献

Arsenic distribution has been found in drinking waters. A connection between arsenic and other constituents of water was determined. Close positive correlation was found between arsenic and humic substances over most of the study area. In two smaller areas, there was no correlation between arsenic and humic substances. In these waters, the arsenic distribution is not controlled by organic matter, but by other factors which need further investigations.Examination of mortality in the populations consuming water containing levels of arsenic above and below that permitted did not show any significant differences in standardised mortality ratio (SMR) from all causes of death for both male and female. The SMR from the main causes of death — diseases of the circulatory system and neoplasms — shows controversial results for males and females.  相似文献

Indirect fitness benefits are believed to be an important force behind the evolution of cooperative breeding. However, helpers may associate with their relatives as a result of delayed dispersal, hence, kin associations might be a consequence of demographic viscosity rather than active choice. In addition, recent studies showed that helpers may have access to reproduction therefore direct benefits might also play an important role. Here, we investigate the possible roles of direct genetic benefits and kin associations on helping behavior in the sociable weaver Philetairus socius, a colonial and cooperatively breeding passerine. We used a microsatellite-based genotyping method to describe the genetic structure within nests and colonies. Within a colony, we found considerable genetic structure between males but not females. Sociable weaver colonies have several nests that are simultaneously active, giving individuals a choice of associating with a range of first-order kin to unrelated individuals. Helpers were significantly more related to the young in the helped nests than in other nests of the colony, suggesting an active choice for associating with kin. The helpers were generally offspring or first-order relatives of one (50%) or both (43%) breeders, although more infrequently, seemingly unrelated individuals also helped (7%). We found no supporting evidence of extrapair parentage and hence no direct genetic gains from helping in our population. This strong reproductive skew is contrary to theoretical models predicting conflicts over reproduction in stepfamilies. We discuss whether female decisions and/or other direct benefits of remaining in kin associations or helping might explain the high skew observed.  相似文献

This study pursues external validation of contingent valuation by comparing survey results with the voting outcome of a Corvallis, Oregon, referendum to fund a riverfront improvement project through increased property taxes. Survey respondents hypothetically make a voting decision—with no financial consequences—on the upcoming referendum. The survey sample consists of respondents verified to have voted in the election. We use available precinct-level election data to compare the proportion of “yes” survey and referendum votes as well as estimate voting models and mean willingness to pay (WTP) based on the two sets of data. We find that survey responses match the actual voting outcome and WTP estimates based on the two are not statistically different. Contrary to similar studies, our statistical results do not depend on re-coding the majority of “undecided” survey responses to “no.” Furthermore, such a re-coding of responses may be inappropriate for our data set.  相似文献

Isolated posterior gills of shore crabs, Carcinus maenas, collected from the Baltic Sea, were perfused and bathed with sea water and solutions of alkali chlorides. The preparation was used to measure fluxes of sodium from the external medium across the gills into the hemolymph and to determine transepithelial potential differences (PDs). Internally negative active transport PDs resulted from perfusion and bathing the gills symmetrically with the same medium (50% sea water). Passive (asymmetry) PDs following employment of 100% sea water as internal and 50% sea water as external medium were — in contrast to symmetry PDs — insensitive to cyanide and ouabain. This result indicates that the gill recognized the desired hyperosmotic state and responded by switching off the active transport component observed under symmetry conditions. Diffusional potential differences and fluxes of Na+ were inhibited by the externally applied diuretic amiloride. Gradients of pure alkali chlorides between medium and blood were accompanied by cation specific PDs. These PDs and their amiloride sensitivity were inversely related to the diameter of the unhydrated cation and allowed the calculation of the permeability sequence P: Li+>Na+>K+>Rb+>Cs+>Cl-. The results obtained show that the permeability of the gills to cations greatly exceeds that to anions. In addition, these findings indicate that the initial amiloride-sensitive step in Na+ transport across the gill is not represented by an electroneutral sodium/proton exchange but by a conductive mechanism.  相似文献

Summary The benefits to partners of monogamous pairs of maintaining continual spatial proximity in the non-breeding season were studied in Bewick's swans wintering in Norfolk, UK.When separated from their mates, females were less successful in aggressive encounters, were threatened more frequently and spent less time feeding than when close to them. Males also suffered reduced success in encounters and a higher frequency of threats by other flock members, though the effect was less pronounced than for females. This sex difference in effect of separation may be associated with the greater weight of males and the fact that success in encounters is related to weight.Partners appeared to assist each other by joining in aggressive encounters, as well as by inhibiting other birds from threatening their mates. However, the precise manner in which the female assisted the male is still obscure, since the highest intensity aggressive encounters — physical fights — involved only male partners. It is suggested that the male may fight harder in his mate's presence.Proximity of partners varied with situation and between different pairs. Partners maintained greater proximity in dense flocks than in dispersed flocks and showed a tendency to stay closer when feeding on winter wheat than on waste potatoes. Partners where the male was high-ranking spent more time together than those where the male was low-ranking.  相似文献

The household production function is an intuitively appealing way to model man's interaction with nature. This paper models the interaction between the household's behavior and publicly provided inputs into wildlife recreation. The paper shows how to compute benefits, assuming that the household production function is known. The household production function approach collapses to the simple travel cost approach when households are unable to substitute their own inputs for publicly provided inputs. In addition, the paper demonstrates the conditions under which the parameters of cost and preference functions can be identified. The conditions for identification are quite restrictive when several choices are endogenous.  相似文献
