Passive air sampling (PAS) was employed to study the occurrence of gaseous and particle-bound PAHs in the North Chinese Plain. The averaged concentrations of gaseous and particle-bound PAHs were 485 ± 209 ng/m3 and 267 ± 161 ng/m3, respectively. The PAHs concentrations at urban sites were generally higher than those at rural ones with ratios <1.5 in spring, summer and fall, but differences between them were not significant for the wintertime and annually averaged concentrations. This urban-rural distribution pattern was related to the PAHs emission sources. PAHs spatial variation can be partially (49%) explained by emission with a simple linear regression method. Both the gaseous and particle-bound PAHs were highest in winter and lowest in summer, with winter/summer ratios of 1.8 and 8, respectively. Emission strength was the most important factor for the seasonality.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of atmospheric mercury (Hg) fluxes measured over vegetated terrestrial systems can provide insight into the underlying process controlling emission and deposition of Hg to vegetated surfaces. Gaseous elemental Hg fluxes were measured for week-long periods in each season (spring, summer, fall, and winter) over an uncontaminated high-elevation wetland meadow in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia using micrometeorological methods. Mean net deposition was observed in the spring (?4.8 ng m?2 h?1), emission in the summer (2.5 ng m?2 h?1), near zero flux in the fall (0.3 ng m?2 h?1), and emission in the winter (4.1 ng m?2 h?1). Nighttime deposition (when stomata are closed) and the poor correlation between Hg fluxes and canopy conductance during periods of active vegetation growth suggest that stomatal processes are not the dominant mechanism for ecosystem-level GEM exchange at this site. The strong springtime deposition relative to summer implies that young vegetation is better at scavenging Hg, with the highest deposition occurring at night possibly via a cuticular pathway. These results suggest that spring is a period of GEM deposition while other seasons exhibit net emission, emphasizing the importance of capturing GEM flux seasonality when determining total Hg budgets.  相似文献

Estimates of the atmospheric deposition to Galveston Bay of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are made using precipitation and meteorological data that were collected continuously from 2 February 1995 to 6 August 1996 at Seabrook, TX, USA. Particulate and vapor phase PAHs in ambient air and particulate and dissolved phases in rain samples were collected and analyzed. More than 95% of atmospheric PAHs were in the vapor phase and about 73% of PAHs in the rain were in the dissolved phase. Phenanthrene and napthalene were the dominant compounds in air vapor and rain dissolved phases, respectively, while 5 and 6 ring PAH were predominant in the particulate phase of both air and rain samples. Total PAH concentrations ranged from 4 to 161 ng m−3 in air samples and from 50 to 312 ng l−1 in rain samples. Temporal variability in total PAH air concentrations were observed, with lower concentrations in the spring and fall (4–34 ng m −3) compared to the summer and winter (37–161 ng m−3). PAHs in the air near Galveston Bay are derived from both combustion and petroleum vaporization. Gas exchange from the atmosphere to the surface water is estimated to be the major deposition process for PAHs (1211 μg m− 2 yr− 1), relative to wet deposition (130 μg m−2 yr− 1) and dry deposition (99 μg m−2 yr− 1). Annual deposition of PAHs directly to Galveston Bay from the atmosphere is estimated as 2  t yr−1.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was measured in 483 precipitation samples collected at 10 sites in Northern China from December 2007 to November 2008. The annual volume-weighted mean (VWM) concentrations and wet deposition fluxes of DOC for 10 sites ranged from 2.4 to 3.9 mg C/L and 1.4 to 2.7 g C m?2 yr?1, respectively. The proportion of DOC to total organic carbon (TOC) was 79% on average, suggesting that a significant fraction of TOC was present as insoluble particulate organic carbon. Due to intensive domestic coal use for house heating and smaller dilution of scavenged organic carbon, higher VWM concentrations of DOC were observed during winter and spring than during summer and autumn. When precipitation events were classified via air mass back-trajectories, the mixed trajectories from SE and NW always corresponded to significantly higher DOC than those from SE or NW alone, coinciding with the centre of a low pressure system moved eastward and the wind direction changed from southeast to northwest. The results also showed that each site had a similar seasonal variation for DOC wet deposition flux. The largest flux occurred during the rainy season, and the lowest flux appeared during winter months. The product of the TC/DOC ratio and the DOC flux yielded an average TC wet deposition flux of 3.2 g C m?2 yr?1 in Northern China, accounting for 8.6% and 22% of the carbon sink magnitude (37 g C m?2 yr?1) in terrestrial ecosystems and anthropogenic carbon emissions (14 g C m?2 yr?1), respectively. This indicates that atmospheric wet deposition of TC is a significant carbon flux that cannot be neglected in regional models of the carbon cycle, and should be considered along with dry deposition in the removal mechanism for carbon from regional atmosphere.  相似文献

The PCDD/Fs in the ambient air associated with concentration and dry deposition flux of four seasons were characterized in rural area. The mean PCDD/F concentrations were 0.342, 0.221, 0.675, 0.741 pg m(-3) and the mean I-TEQ values were 0.027, 0.016, 0.024, 0.063 pg m(-3) in spring, summer, fall and winter, respectively. Ambient air in winter was higher by a factor of 3.4 and 3.9 for PCDD/F concentration and I-TEQ, respectively, than in summer. The study area is located in a Tropical region. Hence, domestic heating is not found in this area and is not responsible for the elevated winter concentration in comparison to other studies. A smooth plate with a sharp leading edge that is pointed into the wind by a wind vane was used for measuring dry deposition flux of PCDD/Fs. Atmospheric dry deposition fluxes of total PCDD/Fs were 140, 116, 137, and 207 pg m(-2)day(-1) in spring, summer, fall, and winter, respectively, and averaged approximately 150 pg m(-2)day(-1). The total dry deposition flux was found to decrease as the temperature increased. Calculated dry deposition velocities of total PCDD/Fs were 0.45, 0.52, 0.32 and 0.39 cm s(-1) in spring, summer, fall, and winter, respectively, and averaged 0.42 cm s(-1).  相似文献

The concentrations of total gaseous mercury (TGM) in air over the southern Baltic Sea and dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) in the surface seawater were measured during summer and winter. The summer expedition was performed on 02–15 July 1997, and the winter expedition on 02–15 March 1998. Average TGM and DGM values obtained were 1.70 and 17.6 ng m−3 in the summer and 1.39 and 17.4 ng m−3 in the winter, respectively. Based on the TGM and DGM data, surface water saturation and air-water fluxes were calculated. The results indicate that the seawater was supersaturated with gaseous mercury during both seasons, with the highest values occurring in the summer. Flux estimates were made using the thin film gas-exchange model. The average Hg fluxes obtained for the summer and winter measurements were 38 and 20 ng m−2 d−1, respectively. The annual mercury flux from this area was estimated by a combination of the TGM and DGM data with monthly average water temperatures and wind velocities, resulting in an annual flux of 9.5 μg m−2 yr−1. This flux is of the same order of magnitude as the average wet deposition input of mercury in this area. This indicates that reemissions from the water surface need to be considered when making mass-balance estimates of mercury in the Baltic Sea as well as modelling calculations of long-range transboundary transport of mercury in northern Europe.  相似文献

PM2.5 aerosols were collected in Nanjing, a typical mega-city in China, during summer and winter 2004 and were characterized for aromatic and cyclic compounds using a GC/MS technique to understand the air pollution problem. They include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes, phthalates and hydroxy-PAHs (OH-PAHs). PAHs, hopanes and OH-PAHs presented higher concentrations in winter (26–178, 3.0–18, and 0.013–0.421 ng m−3, respectively) than in summer (12–96, 1.6–11, and 0.029–0.171 ng m−3, respectively) due to an enhanced coal burning for house heating and atmospheric inversion layers developed in the cold season. In contrast, phthalates are more abundant in summer (109–368 ng m−3, average 230 ng m−3) than in winter (33–390 ng m−3, average 170 ng m−3) due to an enhanced evaporation from plastics during the hot season and the subsequent deposition on the pre-existing particles. Generally, all the identified compounds showed higher concentrations in nighttime than in daytime due to inversion layers and increased emissions from heavy-duty trucks at night. PAHs, hopanes and phthalates in Nanjing aerosols are 5–100 times more abundant than those in Los Angeles, USA, indicating a serious air pollution problem in the city. Concentrations of OH-PAHs are 1–3 orders of magnitude less than their parent PAHs and comparable to those reported from other international cities. Source identification using diagnostic ratios of the organic tracers suggests that PAHs in Nanjing urban area are mainly derived from coal burning, whereas hopanes are more attributable to traffic emissions.  相似文献

Carbonaceous aerosol concentrations were determined for total suspended particle samples collected from Muztagh Ata Mountain in western China from December 2003 to February 2006. Elemental carbon (EC) varied from 0.004 to 0.174 μg m?3 (average = 0.055 μg m?3) while organic carbon (OC) ranged from 0.12 to 2.17 μg m?3 and carbonate carbon (CC) from below detection to 3.57 μg m?3. Overall, EC was the least abundant fraction of carbonaceous species, and the EC concentrations approached those in some remote polar areas, possibly representing a regional background. Low EC and OC concentrations occurred in winter and spring while high CC in spring and summer was presumably due to dust from the Taklimakan desert, China. OC/EC ratios averaged 10.0, and strong correlations between OC and EC in spring–winter suggest their cycles are coupled, but lower correlations in summer–autumn suggest influences from biogenic OC emissions and secondary OC formation. Trajectory analyses indicate that air transported from outside of China brings ~0.05 μg m?3 EC, ~0.42 μg m?3 OC, and ~0.10 μg m?3 CC to the site, with higher levels coming from inside China. The observed EC was within the range of loadings estimated from a glacial ice core, and implications of EC-induced warming for regional climate and glacial ice dynamics are discussed.  相似文献

We present measurements of ammonia (NH3) over a deciduous forest in southern Indiana collected during four field campaigns; two in the spring during the transition to leaf-out and two during the winter. Above canopy NH3 concentrations measured continuously using two Wet Effluent Diffusion Denuders indicate mean concentrations of 0.6–1.2 μg m−3 during the spring and 0.3 μg m−3 during the winter. Measurements suggest that on average the forest act as a sink of NH3, with a representative daily deposition flux of 1.8 mg-NH3 m−2 during the spring. However, on some days during the spring inverted concentration gradients of NH3 were observed resulting in an apparent upward flux of nearly 0.2 mg-NH3 m−2 h−1. Analyses suggest that this apparent emission flux may be due to canopy emission but evaporation of ammonium nitrate particles may also be partly responsible for the observed inverted concentration gradients.  相似文献

PM10 measurements were started in November 1992 at Melpitz site. The mean PM10 concentration in 1993 was 38 μg m?3 in the summer season (May until October) and about 44 μg m?3 in the winter season (November until April). The mean PM10 level decreased until 1999 and varies now in ranges from 20–34 μg m?3 to 17–24 μg m?3 (minimum and maximum mean values for 1999–2008) in winter and summer seasons, respectively. High volume filter samples of particles PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 were characterized for mass, water-soluble ions, organic and elemental carbon from 2004 until 2008. The percentage of PM2.5 in PM10 varies between summer (71.6%) and winter seasons (81.9%). Mean concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 in Melpitz were 20, 15, and 13 μg m?3 in 2004, 22, 18, and 13 μg m?3 in 2005, 24, 19, and 12 μg m?3 in 2006 and 22, 17, and 12 μg m?3 in 2007, respectively. In the four winters the rural background concentration PM10 at Melpitz exceeded the daily 50 μg m?3 limit for Europe on 8, 8, 7 and 6 days, respectively.Findings for a simple two-sector-classification of the samples (May 2004 until April 2008) using 96-h backward trajectories for the identification of source regions are: Air masses were transported most of time (60%) from the western sector and secondly (17%) from the eastern sector. The lowest daily mean mass concentration PM10 were found during western inflow in summer (17 μg m?3) containing low amounts of sulphate (2.4 μg m?3), nitrate (1.7 μg m?3), ammonium (1.1 μg m?3) and TC (3.7 μg m?3). In opposite the highest mean mass concentration PM10 was found during eastern inflow in winter (35 μg m?3) with high amounts of sulphate (6.1 μg m?3), nitrate (5.4 μg m?3), ammonium (3.8 μg m?3) and TC (9.4 μg m?3). An estimation of secondary formed OC (SOA) shows 0.8–0.9 μg m?3 for air masses from West and 2.1–2.2 μg m?3 from East. The seasonal difference can be neglected. The half-hourly measurements of the particle mass concentration PM10 evaluated as mean daily courses using a TEOM® show low values (14–21 μg m?3) in summer and winter for air masses transported from West and the highest concentrations (31–38 μg m?3) in winter for air masses from East. The results demonstrate the influence of meteorological parameters on long-range transport, secondary particle mass formation and re-emission which modify mass concentration and composition of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1. Melpitz site is located in the East of Germany faraway from strong local anthropogenic emissions (rural background). Therefore, this site is suitable for investigation of the influence of long-range transport of air pollution in continental air masses from the East with source regions inside and outside of the European Union.  相似文献

Long-term surface observations indicate that soil dust represents over 30% of the annual fine (particle diameter less than 2.5 μm) particulate mass in many areas of the western US; in spring and summer, it represents an even larger fraction. There are numerous dust-producing playas in the western US, but surface dust aerosol concentrations in this region are also influenced by dust of Asian origin. This study examines the seasonality of surface soil dust concentrations at 15 western US sites using observations from the Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) network from 2001 to 2004. Average soil concentrations in particulate matter less than 10 μm in diameter (PM10) were lowest in winter and peaked during the summer months at these sites; however, episodic higher-concentration events (>10 μg m−3) occurred in the spring, the time of maximum Asian dust transport to the western US. Simulated surface dust concentrations from the Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System (NAAPS) suggested that long-range transport from Asia dominates surface dust concentrations in the western US in the spring, and that, although some long-range transport does occur throughout the year (1–2 μg m−3), locally generated dust plays a larger role in the region in summer and fall. However, NAAPS simulated some anomalously high concentrations (>50 μg m−3) of local dust in the fall and winter months over portions of the western US. Differences between modeled and observed dust concentrations were attributed to overestimation of total observed soil dust concentrations by the assumptions used to convert IMPROVE measurements into PM10 soil concentrations, lack of inhibition of model dust production in snow-covered regions, and lack of seasonal agricultural sources in the model.  相似文献

Fifty-five seasonal PM2.5 samples were collected March 2003–January 2004 at Changdao, a resort island located at the demarcation line between Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea in Northern China. Changdao is in the transport path of the continental aerosols heading toward the Pacific Ocean in winter and spring due to the East Asia Monsoon. Solvent-extractable organic compounds (SEOC), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were analyzed for source identification based on molecular markers. This data set provides useful information for the downstream site researchers of the Asian continental outflow. Total carbon (TC, OC+EC) was ∼18 μg m−3 in winter, ∼9 μg m−3 in spring and autumn and a large part of the TC was WSOC (33% in winter, >45% in the other seasons). Winter and spring were the high SEOC seasons with n-fatty acids the highest at ∼290 and ∼170 ng m−3, respectively, followed by n-alkanes at ∼210 and ∼90 ng m−3, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also at high at ∼120 and ∼30 ng m−3. High WSOC/TC, low C18:1/C18 of fatty acids, and low concentrations of labile PAHs such as benzo(a)pyrene, together with back trajectory analysis suggested that the aerosols were aged and transported. PAHs, triterpane and sterane distributions provided evidence that coal burning was the main source of the continental outflow. The detection of levoglucosan and β-sitosterol in nearly all the samples showed the impact of biomass burning.  相似文献

Land spreading nitrogen-rich municipal waste biosolids (NO3-N<256 mg N kg−1 dry weight, NH3-N∼23,080 mg N kg−1 dry weight, Total Kjeldahl N∼41,700 mg N kg−1 dry weight) to human food and non-food chain land is a practice followed throughout the US. This practice may lead to the recovery and utilization of the nitrogen by vegetation, but it may also lead to emissions of biogenic nitric oxide (NO), which may enhance ozone pollution in the lower levels of the troposphere. Recent global estimates of biogenic NO emissions from soils are cited in the literature, which are based on field measurements of NO emissions from various agricultural and non-agricultural fields. However, biogenic emissions of NO from soils amended with biosolids are lacking. Utilizing a state-of-the-art mobile laboratory and a dynamic flow-through chamber system, in-situ concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) were measured during the spring/summer of 1999 and winter/spring of 2000 from an agricultural soil which is routinely amended with municipal waste biosolids. The average NO flux for the late spring/summer time period (10 June 1999–5 August 1999) was 69.4±34.9 ng N m−2 s−1. Biosolids were applied during September 1999 and the field site was sampled again during winter/spring 2000 (28 February 2000–9 March 2000), during which the average flux was 3.6±1.7 ng N m−2 s−1. The same field site was sampled again in late spring (2–9 June 2000) and the average flux was 64.8±41.0 ng N m−2 s−1. An observationally based model, developed as part of this study, found that summer accounted for 60% of the yearly emission while fall, winter and spring accounted for 20%, 4% and 16% respectively. Field experiments were conducted which indicated that the application of biosolids increases the emissions of NO and that techniques to estimate biogenic NO emissions would, on a yearly average, underestimate the NO flux from this field by a factor of 26. Soil temperature and % water filled pore space (%WFPS) were observed to be significant variables for predicting NO emissions, however %WFPS was found to be most significant during high soil temperature conditions. In the range of pH values found at this site (5.8±0.3), pH was not observed to be a significant parameter in predicting NO emissions.  相似文献

The surface emission of landfill gas (LFG) was studied to estimate the amount of LFG efflux from solid waste landfills using an air flux chamber. LFG efflux increased as atmospheric temperature increased during the day, and the same pattern for the surface emission was observed for the change of seasons. LFG efflux rate decreased from summer through winter. The average LFG efflux rates of winter, spring and summer were 0.1584, 0.3013 and 0.8597 m3 m−2 h−1 respectively. The total amount of surface emission was calculated based on the seasonal LFG efflux rate and the landfill surface area. From the estimates of LFG generation, it is expected that about 30% of the generated LFG may be released through the surface without extraction process. As forced extraction with a blower proceeded, the extraction well pressure decreased from 1100 to –100 mm H2O, and the LFG surface efflux decreased markedly above 80%. Thus, the utilization of LFG by forced extraction would be the good solution for global warming and air pollution by LFG.  相似文献

Gaseous mercury fluxes from the forest floor of the Adirondacks   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The flux of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) from the forest floor of the Adirondack Mountains in New York (USA) was measured numerous times throughout 2005 and 2006 using a polycarbonate dynamic flux chamber (DFC). The Hg flux ranged between −2.5 and 27.2 ng m−2 h−1 and was positively correlated with temperature and solar radiation. The measured Hg emission flux was highest in spring, and summer, and lowest in winter. During leaf-off periods, the Hg emission flux was highly dependent on solar radiation and less dependent on temperature. During leaf-on periods, the Hg emission flux was fairly constant because the forest canopy was shading the forest floor. Two empirical models were developed to estimate yearly Hg0 emissions, one for the leaf-off period and one for the leaf-on period. Using the U.S. EPA's CASTNET meteorological data, the cumulative estimated emission flux was approx. 7.0 μg Hg0 m−2 year−1.  相似文献

A novel passive sampling technique using a funnel–adsorber–cartridge device was adopted and validated in the field during a long-term monitoring program on the atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in three rural regions of southern Germany. Apart from seasonal variations, fairly stable annual deposition rates around 200 μg m−2 yr−1 for the sum of PAHs were obtained. The time-integrating passive samplers showed that spatial variability due to topography was negligible and differences between open-field and forest deposition were within a factor of 2. Based on correlations with ambient temperature, advection was identified as the most important factor that controls the atmospheric deposition of PAHs. Gas-adsorption contributes significantly to the deposition of the semivolatile compounds in forests, but particle deposition seems to be the major pathway for all PAHs.  相似文献

Long-term mercury dynamics in UK soils   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A model assuming first-order losses by evasion and leaching was used to evaluate Hg dynamics in UK soils since 1850. Temporal deposition patterns of Hg were constructed from literature information. Inverse modelling indicated that 30% of 898 rural sites receive Hg only from the global circulation, while in 51% of cases local deposition exceeds global. Average estimated deposition is 16 μg Hg m−2 a−1 to rural soils, 19 μg Hg m−2 a−1 to rural and non-rural soils combined. UK soils currently hold 2490 tonnes of reactive Hg, of which 2140 tonnes are due to anthropogenic deposition, mostly local in origin. Topsoil currently releases 5.1 tonnes of Hg0 per annum to the atmosphere, about 50% more than the anthropogenic flux. Sorptive retention of Hg in the lower soil exerts a strong control on surface water Hg concentrations. Following decreases in inputs, soil Hg concentrations are predicted to decline over hundreds of years.  相似文献

The residual levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere and in dissolved phase from Lake Chaohu were measured by (GC–MS). The composition and seasonal variation were investigated. The diffusive air–water exchange flux was estimated by a two-film model, and the uncertainty in the flux calculations and the sensitivity of the parameters were evaluated. The following results were obtained: (1) the average residual levels of all PAHs (PAH16) in the atmosphere from Lake Chaohu were 60.85 ± 46.17 ng m−3 in the gaseous phase and 14.32 ± 23.82 ng m−3 in the particulate phase. The dissolved PAH16 level was 173.46 ± 132.89 ng L−1. (2) The seasonal variation of average PAH16 contents ranged from 43.09 ± 33.20 ng m−3 (summer) to 137.47 ± 41.69 ng m−3 (winter) in gaseous phase, from 6.62 ± 2.72 ng m−3 (summer) to 56.13 ± 22.99 ng m−3 (winter) in particulate phase, and 142.68 ± 74.68 ng L−1 (winter) to 360.00 ± 176.60 ng L−1 (summer) in water samples. Obvious seasonal trends of PAH16 concentrations were found in the atmosphere and water. The values of PAH16 for both the atmosphere and the water were significantly correlated with temperature. (3) The monthly diffusive air–water exchange flux of total PAH16 ranged from −1.77 × 104 ng m−2 d−1 to 1.11 × 105 ng m−2 d−1, with an average value of 3.45 × 104 ng m−2 d−1. (4) The results of a Monte Carlo simulation showed that the monthly average PAH fluxes ranged from −3.4 × 103 ng m−2 d−1 to 1.6 × 104 ng m−2 d−1 throughout the year, and the uncertainties for individual PAHs were compared. (5) According to the sensitivity analysis, the concentrations of dissolved and gaseous phase PAHs were the two most important factors affecting the results of the flux calculations.  相似文献

Multi-year hourly measurements of PM2.5 elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) from a site in the South Bronx, New York were used to examine diurnal, day of week and seasonal patterns. The hourly carbon measurements also provided temporally resolved information on sporadic EC spikes observed predominantly in winter. Furthermore, hourly EC and OC data were used to provide information on secondary organic aerosol formation. Average monthly EC concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 μg m?3 with peak hourly values of several μg m?3 typically observed from November to March. Mean EC concentrations were lower on weekends (approximately 27% lower on Saturday and 38% lower on Sunday) than on weekdays (Monday to Friday). The weekday/weekend difference was more pronounced during summer months and less noticeable during winter. Throughout the year EC exhibited a similar diurnal pattern to NOx showing a pronounced peak during the morning commute period (7–10 AM EST). These patterns suggest that EC was impacted by local mobile emissions and in addition by emissions from space heating sources during winter months. Although EC was highly correlated with black carbon (BC) there was a pronounced seasonal BC/EC gradient with summer BC concentrations approximately a factor of 2 higher than EC. Average monthly OC concentrations ranged from 1.0 to 4.1 μg m?3 with maximum hourly concentrations of 7–11 μg m?3 predominantly in summer or winter months. OC concentrations generally correlated with PM2.5 total mass and aerosol sulfate and with NOx during winter months. OC showed no particular day of week pattern. The OC diurnal pattern was typically different than EC except in winter when OC tracked EC and NOx indicating local primary emissions contributed significantly to OC during winter at the urban location. On average secondary organic aerosol was estimated to account for 40–50% of OC during winter and up to 63–73% during summer months.  相似文献

The light extinction and direct forcing properties of the atmospheric aerosol were investigated for a midwestern rural site (Bondville, IL) using field measurements, a semi-empirical light extinction model, and a radiative transfer code. Model inputs were based on the site measurements of the physical and chemical characteristics of atmospheric aerosol during the spring, summer, fall and winter of 1994. The light scattering and extinction coefficients were calculated and apportioned using the elastic light scattering interactive efficiency (ELSIE) model (Sloane and Wolff, 1985, Atmospheric Environment 19(4), 669–680). The average efficiencies calculated for organic carbon (OC, carbon measured as organic multiplied by 1.2) ranged from 3.81 m2/g OC at lower relative humidities (<63%) to 6.90 m2/g OC at higher relative humidities (>75%) while sulfate (assumed as ammonium sulfate) efficiencies ranged from 1.23 m2/g (NH4)2SO4 to 5.78 m2/g (NH4)2SO4 for the same range of relative humidities. Radiative transfer calculations showed that the rural aerosol at Bondville is most likely to have an overall negative (cooling) forcing effect on climate. Elemental carbon (EC), however, acts to counter sulfate forcing to a degree that has a significant seasonal variation, primarily due to the seasonal variation in the sulfate concentrations. Taking the loading to be the mean summer EC+ammonium sulfate loading and assuming [EC]/[(NH4)2SO4] to be zero in one case (i.e. no soot present) and 0.025 (summer mean at Bondville) in another leads to a 37% difference in calculated forcing.  相似文献
