In 1984, 115 samples of the starfish Asterias rubens L. collected in the south-eastern part of Cadet Trench (Mecklenburg Bay/Western Baltic Sea) were analyzed for their contents of a few major (calcium, magnesium) and trace elements (cadmium, copper, iron, mercury, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc). Distinct differences were found between starfish from different stations, and these are attributed to the composition of the sediments acting as a substrate for their prey (mussels, snails). Except for cadmium, the concentrations of the elements studied all correlated negatively with the diameter and weight of the starfish.

Parallel analyses of starfish arms and the central discs of the same animals showed that iron, zinc, copper and mercury levels were 16 to 30% higher, and selenium, manganese, magnesium, calcium and lead were 4 to 9% higher in the arms. Cadmium concentrations were 20% higher in the central discs than in the arms.

Stock estimations (about 52,000 tons fresh weight) show that starfish play a significant role in the benthic ecosystem of the western Baltic Sea. They can consume up to 200,000 tons of mussels and clams (Mytilus edulis, Macoma baltica) a year and may therefore represent a notable factor in the trace metal balance of the region.  相似文献

Total metal concentrations (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn) and their distribution in different chemical forms (speciation) were determined in sediments from the Adriatic Sea in order to evaluate contamination and mobility of metals. The study was carried out on marine sediments collected in two areas of the Adriatic Sea differently influenced by Po river waters. Metal distribution in the study area depends prevalently on water circulation and on organic matter distribution. Among metal levels, significant correlations between copper and zinc and between lead and nickel were found, suggesting common and specific sources. As regards metal speciation, the distribution of different chemical forms changes with the metal. The prevailing zinc phases, for example mobile forms, and sulphide together are greater than 50% of total metal. Nickel is mainly present in sediments as sulphide, and the preferential association of copper with organic matter is evident. Lead and manganese are preferentially found as mobile forms (more of 30% for lead, 40% or more for manganese).  相似文献

This study applied biomarkers and benthic indices at an area in North Evoikos Gulf, Greece, affected by metalliferous slag disposal. Biomarkers of antioxidant defense (catalase, glutathione S-transferase), and neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase) were measured in crabs Liocarcinus depurator. Iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) concentrations in sediments and crabs were also measured. High levels of all metals were found in sediments at the disposal area. Metal levels in the crabs were also higher in the disposal area although spatial differences were not as marked as in the sediments. Accordingly, biomarker responses of crabs in the disposal area were also noted suggesting impact on the antioxidant defense of the organisms against oxidative stress. Benthic indices showed disturbance in the disposal area. The combined approach of measuring biomarkers and contaminant levels in the crabs and sediment was complementary to the benthic indices approach providing indications of metal exposure related effects. Our results support the idea that a twofold monitoring approach of assessing both the benthic community structure shifts and the biomarkers and metal accumulation levels may integrate and capture both the structural and the toxicological effects of dumping onto the benthic communities.  相似文献

Khor Kalabsha is the second largest Khor in Lake Nasser, which is a freshwater side-branch of the main lake. Chemical analysis of the samples indicates that calcium carbonate and organic matter content in the surface sediments average 17.8 and 3.07%, respectively. Moreover, manganese, iron, zinc and copper concentrations are lower in Khor Kalabsha than in other lakes of Egypt. It has been found that both oxides and residual forms constitute the major part of the measured elements in the study area, while manganese and iron play an important role in building up clay minerals. It is noted that both zinc and copper fractions are controlled by biological and biochemical processes.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the accumulation of Zn, Cd and Cu in the digestive gland of the oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae in response to the contamination of sediments and discusses the potential use of this specific organ in monitoring metal contamination in tropical areas. Sediment and oyster samples were collected from coastal Rio de Janeiro sites with different levels of human impact: Sepetiba Bay, Guanabara Bay and the Paraty coast. Metal concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Significant statistical differences (p<0.001; p<0.05) were observed for Zn and Cd concentrations in the digestive gland; the highest Zn concentrations were found at Sepetiba, followed by Guanabara and Paraty. The highest digestive gland Cd concentrations were found at Paraty, followed by Sepetiba and Guanabara. These concentrations were proportional to those found in the sediments. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in Cu among the sampling sites. The highest digestive-gland Cu concentration was also found at Sepetiba, followed by Guanabara. The biosediment accumulation factor indicated a gradient of sediment contamination for Zn and Cd. The digestive gland of C. rhizophorae can be a potential indicator of trace metal contamination in sediments from tropical estuarine environments.  相似文献

Although laboratory experimental studies have shown that copper is toxic to marine organisms at concentrations found in contaminated sediments, there is little unequivocal evidence of undesirable ecological effects in the field, other than at extreme concentrations. We describe a study in Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia, in which the concentrations of copper in marine sediments were experimentally enhanced. Changes in the abundance and taxonomic composition of the fauna of copper-treated sediments relative to those of two control treatments were monitored over a period of six months. Univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (non-metric multidimensional scaling, MDS) analyses of the changes in the fauna showed that increased concentrations of copper (140 to 1200 g g-1 compared with background concentrations of 29 to 40 g g-1) had an impact on the fauna. The nature of the response varied among taxa. For example, in some taxa, numbers of individuals decreased through time relative to controls, whereas the abundance of another taxon remained fairly constant through time in the copper treatment while numbers of control individuals increased. Differences in the changes of the faunas through time among the control and copper treatments were not always consistent among replicate experimental units 5 m apart, nor were they consistent between replicate experimental sites 100 m apart. The magnitudes of the changes in the faunas caused by the copper treatment are considered in the context of the magnitude of previously measured natural temporal variation.  相似文献

In any polluted marine environment, different invertebrate species contain markedly different concentrations of heavy metals. Primary producers take metals from seawater, but animals take additional metals from diets of animals, plants and detritus. Metals in a dietary organism of a food chain have varying reactivities and they follow different biochemical pathways. Excess metals are bound by ligands to form insoluble compounds within cytological compartments. These metabolic systems prevent the disruption of normal biochemical reactions by metals. The present work on Mediterranean invertebrates, initiated in Greece in 1993, used digestive glands from three species of marine snail,Monodonta mutabilis (Philippi),Cerithium vulgatum (Bruguière), andMurex trunculus (Linnaeus) as prey tissue, and hermit crabsClibanarius erythropus (Latreille) as predators; the digestive glands and faecal pellets from all animals were analysed by atomic absorption spectroscopy and x-ray microanalysis. Most metals detoxified by the snails are unavailable to the crabs and they pass straight through the gut and appear in the faecal pellets. This applies to significant proportions of the manganese, nickel, copper, zinc and silver which are bound electrostatically to phosphate or covalently to sulphur within membrane-bound intracellular compartments. Cadmium and chromium are transferred to the crabs. In digestive glands of snails, cadmium is bound to soluble highsulphur protein in the cytosol; the cytology of chromium in these animals is not known.  相似文献

A study was conducted on the Babylon snail (Babylonia areolata) to examine the effects of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) on different life stages of this gastropod. Metal toxicity significantly varied according to the life stage of the snail. The different LC50 values obtained were 0.51, 5.49, 0.31, and 0.2 ppm for Cu, Zn, Cd, and Ni for the larval stage and 4.98, 15.19, 0.91, and 1.21 ppm at the juvenile stage and 8.54, 17.52, 1.14, and 1.44 ppm in the adult stage. Studies were also conducted on the effects of dual metal concentrations and experiments were repeated with temperature as a variable. Results demonstrated that metal toxicity values were altered depending on the metals involved in the combination as well as temperature under which the experiment was conducted.  相似文献

Freshly deposited surface sediments from the Alexandria coastal zone were collected and analysed in 1995 for their trace metal concentrations. Metal concentrations in the sediments vary between sites within a wide range for copper, zinc, iron, lead, chromium and cadmium. the statistical analysis between the metal concentrations and the different constituents (organic carbon, total nitrogen, silt, clay and total iron) showed significant correlations. the enrichment factors for the sediments ranged between 3 and 4-fold for copper, chromium and zinc and reached up to 9-fold for lead and 113-fold for cadmium. the highest index for cadmium and lead may be attributed to the anthropogenic inputs from the surrounding area, where they are highest in lower discharge areas.  相似文献

Mytilus edulis planulatus (Lamarck) were collected from Howden, South-east Tasmania in autumn 1981. Interaction effects of cadmium, copper and zinc during accumulation by mussels exposed for ten days to all three metals simultaneously were examined in a series of experiments in which each metal was tested at three concentrations. In general, interaction effects were most evident at the highest concentrations tested (20 g l-1 Cd; 20 g l-1 Cu; 200 g l-1 Zn) and led to a reduction in the accumulation of cadmium and an increase in that of copper and zinc. More specifically, high levels of zinc caused a decrease in cadmium uptake and an increase in copper accumulation. The presence of copper resulted in depressed cadmium accumulation while zinc accumulation increased. Cadmium tended to enhance zinc accumulation, but copper accumulation was only affected to any great extent when zinc was also present.  相似文献

For the application of our method for the sequential extraction of heavy metals from microsamples presented in part 1 (“Sequentielle Schwermetallextraktion von Mikroproben” — “Sequential Extraction of Heavy Metals from Micro Samples”) an investigation was carried out to evaluate airborne dust fallout and street sediments at two urban sites where different heavy metal immission rates occur due to traffic influence. In the street sediments the total concentrations of zinc, copper and lead was three to fivefold higher in the silt and clay fraction (< 63 μm) than in the particle size fraction (< 1,12 mm), but showed nearly the same mobilisation behaviour. The dust samples showed equal mobilisation behaviour as the street sediments for copper and lead, while zinc was considerably more mobile in the dust samples: In extraction steps I–IV (I: mobile fraction; II: easily deliverable fraction; III: fraction bound to manganese oxides; IV: fraction bound organic to matter) zinc, copper and lead in street sediments, as well as copper and lead in dust samples, were dissolved to 40–70%, whereas about 80% of zinc in the dust samples was already dissolved in extraction step I.  相似文献

Trace-metal distribution in tissues of the shrimp Pleoticus muelleri Bate from the Patagonian region, Argentina, was related to sex, size and physiological condition. Concentrations of cadmium, copper, manganese and zinc were determined in the digestive gland, male reproductive system and muscle of adult specimens. Significant (p<0.01) sex-dependent differences in mean metal concentrations (g g-1 wet wt) were found in the following tissues of males and females, respectively: digestive gland, Cu, 82.9 and 30.8; Zn, 32.5 and 44.9; reproductive system, Zn, 12.8 and 38.6; Mn, 1.7 and 3.1; Cd, 0.29 and 0.58. Metal levels of muscle showed no significant differences between sexes. Cadmium was not detected in muscle, suggesting that its incorporation into this tissue was strictly regulated. Metal concentrations in the male reproductive system were in general weakly correlated (0.001<p<0.05) with either body size or the concentration of metals in the digestive gland. The developing ovary incorporated substantial amounts of zinc, while cadmium and copper levels decreased at proportional rates (p<0.001). The patterns of the variations in the concentrations of these metals in the ovary strongly suggested that a regulatory mechanism operated throughout oogenesis. Manganese was not involved in this presumptive mechanism. The results of this study are discussed in terms of concentrations and in absolute amounts for standardized individuals.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the jellyfish Catostylus mosaicus (Quoy and Gaimard 1824) (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae) was investigated in New South Wales, Australia. Medusae were gonochoristic. There was a 1:1 ratio of male and female medusae and there was no evidence of sexual dimorphism. Oocytes arose from the gastrodermis and maintained contact with the gastrodermis, via trophocytes, throughout gametogenesis. Spermatogenesis occurred within follicles that arose from invagination of the gastrodermis. Detailed sampling of gonads over a period of 3.25 yr in Botany Bay, and over 2.5 yr in Lake Illawarra, indicated that gametogenesis occurred almost continuously during the year. Oocytes were smaller, or were absent from the ovaries during 3 of the 4 winters sampled at Botany Bay and during all 3 winter periods sampled at Lake Illawarra. Comparisons were made with other locations, although these were sampled less frequently. When medusae were present at a location, similar trends were observed. The size at which medusae matured varied, but during non-winter periods and at two locations, all medusae exceeding 130 mm diam were considered mature. Concentrations of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper were determined in whole soft parts of the common mussel Mytilus edulis (L.) sampled in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port Bay, both in Victoria, Australia. The mussels were sampled according to procedures suggested by previous studies in order to eliminate the effects of natural environmental variables. Results of the analytical studies were compared to data on the quantities of trace metals known to be discharged by industry into the catchments of each Bay. This allowed an evaluation of the indicator ability of the mussel without the need for multiple analyses of water samples. The results suggest that the mussel is capable of acting as an efficient time-integrated indicator of zinc, cadmium and lead over a wide variety of environmental conditions. Although additional variables may remain to be investigated, the mussel is recommended as an alternative to the analysis of water and sediments. With further development this organism may also be useful for monitoring industrial effluent characteristics at the discharge site, allowing rapid, reliable and inexpensive control of water quality. In contrast, the mussel is of doubtful use as an indicator of copper; other indicator types such as macroalgae may be better-suited to the study of this element.  相似文献

Surface sediments collected from continental shelf of the East China Sea were analyzed for heavy metals (iron, manganese, copper, zinc, lead, cadmium), carbonate, organic carbon contents, and grain sizes. the range of concentrations observed were iron: 0.3-1.3 wt%, manganese: 2.3-14 μmole/g, copper: 7.1-184 μmole/g, zinc: 0.16-0.77μmiole/g, lead: 15-98 μmole/g, cadmium: 0.17-3.9 μmole/g, carbonate: 3.6-87 wt%, sand: 10-100%, silt: 0-70% and clay: 0-50%.

A zonal distribution pattern of the heavy metals was found in the East China Sea Continental shelf sediments. High concentrations of most heavy metals, organic carbon and fine-grained sediments were observed in the inner shelf zone, especially those near the discharge of the Yangtze River. Concentrations of these heavy metals decreased from the inner shelf to the shelf break region. High concentrations of metals were also found in sediments near Taiwan. Iron concentrations decreased north-east of the central shelf region. High concentrations of cadmium were found in the shelf break region where biogenic carbonate is predominant. This study showed that biogenic carbonate in the East China Sea shelf break region and the terrigenous sediments from the Yangtze River and island of Taiwan were the major sources of heavy metals. Heavy metal concentrations were strongly influenced by the content of the coarse-grained quartz sand present in the sediments.  相似文献

The trochid snail Monodonta articulata Lamarck was exposed to mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. At 24 h, retraction into the shell was observed in 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++; this retraction increased in these concentrations at 36 h. Retracted snails died if retained in the solutions, but generally recovered within 24 to 48 h if transferred to uncontaminated sea water. Immersionemersion behaviour and interface activity were studied over 24 h by means of an aktograph; snails in normal sea water spent more time below than above the water surface, and exhibited frequent periods of activity. Exposure to mercuric sulphate at concentration of 0.25, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++ progressively reduced both the length and frequency of activity periods. From 0.5 ppm Hg++ upwards, emersion periods increased, and immersion periods decreased. Oxygen consumption of snails was measured in sea water and in mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. Oxygen consumption decreased significantly with each progressive rise in mercury concentration. It is considered that mercury affects M. articulata by interfering with respiration, initially reducing interface activity, then forcing the snail for longer and longer periods out of the water. Retraction occurs when activity is no longer possible. It is concluded that respiratory and behavioural alterations of this nature would afford a good indicator of the presence of sub-lethal concentrations of pollutants.  相似文献
