The availability of different forms of nitrogen in coastal and estuarine waters may be important in determining the abundance and productivity of different phytoplankton species. Although urea has been shown to contribute as much as 50% of the nitrogen for phytoplankton nutrition, relatively little is known of the activity and expression of urease in phytoplankton. Using an in vitro enzyme assay, urease activities were examined in laboratory cultures of three species: Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth, Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller, and Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle. Cultures of P. minimum and T. weissflogii were grown on three nitrogen sources (NO3m, NH4+, and urea), while A. anophagefferens was grown only on NO3m and urea. Urease was found to be constitutive in all cultures, but activity varied with growth rate and assay temperature for the different cultures. For A. anophagefferens, urease activity varied positively with growth rate regardless of the N source, while for P. minimum, urease activity varied positively with growth rate only for cultures grown on urea and NH4+. In contrast, for T. weissflogii, activity did not vary with growth rate for any of the N sources. For all species, urease activity increased with assay temperature, but with different apparent temperature optima. For A. anophagefferens, in vitro activity increased from near 0-30°C, and remained stable to 50°C, while for P. minimum, increased in vitro activity was noted from near 0-20°C, but constant activity was observed between 20°C and 50°C. For T. weissfloggii, while activity also increased from 0°C to 20°C, subsequent decreases were noted when temperature was elevated above 20°C. Urease activity had a half-saturation constant of 120-165 wg atom N lу in all three species. On both an hourly and daily basis, urease activity in A. anophagefferens exceeded nitrogen demand for growth. In P. minimum, urease activity on an hourly basis matched the nitrogen demand, but was less than the demand on a daily basis. For T. weissflogii, urease activity was always less than the nitrogen demand. These patterns in urease activity in three different species demonstrate that while apparently constitutive, the regulation of activity was substantially different in the diatom. These differences in the physiological regulation of urease activity, as well as other enzymes, may play a role in their ecological success in different environments.  相似文献

Marine sponges can host a variety of cyanobacterial and bacterial symbionts, but it is often unclear whether these symbionts are generalists that occur in many host species or specialists that occur only in certain species or populations of sponges. The filamentous cyanobacterium Oscillatoria spongeliae is found in the sponges Dysidea n. sp. aff. herbacea 1A and 1B, and similar cyanobacteria are found in D. n. sp. aff. granulosa. We amplified and sequenced sponge nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and cyanobacterial 16S rDNA from specimens of these three sponges. We then used these sequences to construct phylogenies for host sponges and their symbiotic cyanobacteria. Each of these three sponge species hosts a distinct cyanobacterial clade, suggesting a high degree of host specificity and potential coevolution between symbiotic cyanobacteria and their host sponges.  相似文献

The local resource enhancement (LRE) model predicts that in cooperatively breeding species, sex ratios will be biased in favor of the more helpful sex. In this study, we assess the assumptions underlying the LRE model in a population of cooperatively breeding wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) in Northern Botswana monitored over a 15-year period. In this population, litter size and pup survival to 1 year are strongly affected by pack size and the breeding female’s age, but adult males have a stronger and more linear effect on females’ reproductive performance than do adult females. This asymmetry in the benefits derived from male and female helpers is reflected in male-biased sex ratios in litters at the time pups emerge from the den. Sex ratio biases are most pronounced in the litters of the youngest mothers who live in significantly smaller packs than older females. The presence of potential rivals for the dominant female’s position depresses pup production at the time of emergence, suggesting that competition among females for breeding positions may also contribute to the selective forces affecting birth sex ratios.  相似文献

Previous molecular phylogenetic analyses have shown that five tropical lucinid species living in or near Thalassia testudinum seagrass beds are colonized by the same bacterial symbiont species. In addition, a new lucinid species belonging to the genus Anodontia, which inhabits reducing sediment found near seagrass beds and in mangrove swamps, has been included in the present study. Endosymbiosis in Anodontia alba was examined according to symbiont phylogenetic and gill ultrastructural analysis. Phylogenetic analysis showed that partial 16S rDNA sequences of A. alba- and Codakia orbicularis-symbionts were 100% identical at all nucleotide positions determined, suggesting that A. alba also harbors the same symbiont species as C. orbicularis (and, consequently, as C. orbiculata, C. pectinella, Linga pensylvanica and Divaricella quadrisulcata). Based on light and electron microscopy, the cellular organization of the gill filament appeared similar to those already described in other lucinids. The most distinctive feature is the lack of "granule cells" in the lateral zone of A. alba gill filaments. In order to confirm the single-species hypothesis, purified fractions of gill bacterial symbionts obtained from the gills of each of the six tropical lucinids cited above were used to infect aposymbiotic juveniles of C. orbicularis. In each case, aposymbiotic juvenile batches were successfully infected by the gill-endosymbiont fractions, whereas, during the experiments, juveniles from the negative control were still uninfected. These experimental data confirm the phylogenetic data and also demonstrate that chemoautotrophic bacterial endosymbionts from their host cells can colonize aposymbiotic juveniles. The conclusion also follows that intracellular gill-endosymbionts still have the capacity to recognize and colonize new host generations. Lucinids provide a unique model for the study of sulfide-oxidizing symbiosis, even if symbionts remain unculturable.  相似文献

Sperm competition theory predicts that ejaculate expenditure by males should increase with the risk of competition from rivals. The tendency to modulate expenditure, however, may reflect various constraints acting on different individuals. We test this idea here by looking at the effects of competition and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in two species of gryllid cricket. Male Gryllus bimaculatus and Gryllodes sigillatus modulated the sperm content of their spermatophores in relation to both apparent competition and FA in limb size. Males of both species increased the amount of sperm transferred when an apparent male competitor was present, sperm number increasing regardless of the species of apparent competitor in G. bimaculatus, but significantly more with a conspecific competitor in G. sigillatus. In addition, the relative size of the spermatophylax in G. sigillatus increased in the presence of apparent competition, while spermatophore transfer time decreased in G. bimaculatus. Sperm number showed opposite relationships with limb asymmetry in the two species, decreasing with increasing asymmetry in males in G. sigillatus, but increasing with asymmetry in both males and females in G. bimaculatus. G. bimaculatus, but not G. sigillatus, also transferred more sperm when paired with a larger female. Relationships between reproductive measures and limb asymmetry were significant only when competitors were present in G. bimaculatus, but were significant regardless of competition in G. sigillatus. The differences may reflect the additional burden of producing a spermatophylax in G. sigillatus.  相似文献

This study devised a staging system for, and monitored, the gonad development of the limpet species Patella vulgata and Patella ulyssiponensis on the South West coast of Ireland using histological techniques. Maturation began in the males of both species in January and in the females it began in March. There was no statistical difference in gonad development between sexes and between species. Spawning in the male P. vulgata occurred from September to December 2003 and in September and October 2004. In female P. vulgata spawning occurred from October to December 2003, no spawning of females was observed in 2004. In male P. ulyssiponensis spawning occurred in November and December 2003 and from September 2004 to December 2004. Spawning was observed from November 2003 to January 2004 and in September 2004 in female P. ulyssiponensis. Sex ratios also varied between the species and between months sampled. Nevertheless more males were observed in both species.  相似文献

Morpho-functional features potentially involved in defence mechanisms against fish predators (i.e. attachment tenacity, spine length, and test robustness and thickness) have been assessed in two Mediterranean sea urchins, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula. All four morpho-functional features were significantly and positively related to individual size for both species of sea urchins. Test robustness (i.e. static load needed to break sea urchin tests) was significantly greater for A. lixula (from 3,450 to 15,000 g depending on size) than for P. lividus (1,180–11,180 g). Attachment tenacity (i.e. force needed to dislodge sea urchins from the rocky substrate) was greater in A. lixula (280–3,300 g) than in P. lividus (110–1,450 g), and the difference tended to decrease in relation to smaller sea urchin size. Spine length was greater in A. lixula (1.5–2.9 cm) than in P. lividus (0.5–2.3 cm), but the difference decreased for larger sea urchin size. Test thickness was slightly greater (but not significantly) in A. lixula (0.35–1.10 mm) than in P. lividus (0.12–0.90 mm). These results provide evidence that morpho-functional features of sea urchins could be involved in affecting predation rates by fishes upon P. lividus and A. lixula, with potential implications for the population structure and distribution patterns of the two sea urchins in shallow rocky reefs.Communicated by R. Survival and growth of early post-settlement stages are critical for the development of seaweed populations. Fucoid germlings commonly settle in dense monospecific aggregates, where intraspecific competition and environmental variables (e.g. nutrient concentration and temperature) may affect survival and growth. Using factorial experiments, we determined the effects of settlement density (~10, ~50 and ~250 germlings cm–2), nutrient enrichment (from ~10 to ~40 µM N and from ~0.5 to ~2.5 µM P), and temperature (7°C and 17°C) on Fucus serratus and F. evanescens germlings in laboratory cultures over 3 months. Settlement density, nutrient concentration and temperature interactively affected growth of germlings, and the magnitude of this interaction varied between the two species. This represents the first record of such factorial interactions in Fucus spp. germlings. Intraspecific competition, estimated as the relative reduction in germling growth and survival from low to high densities, increased with decreasing nutrient concentration and increasing temperature in both species. While temperature and nutrient concentration had little effect on germling size distributions, size inequality and skewness generally increased with germling density, indicating that a few large individuals gained dominance and suppressed many smaller ones at high density. Self-thinning increased with settlement density and depended on nutrient concentration and species at high density. At high density, self-thinning increased with decreasing nutrient levels in F. evanescens, but not in F. serratus. At low density, nutrient enrichment increased germling growth in F. evanescens, but not in F. serratus, whereas growth in both species was stimulated by nutrient enrichment at higher densities. These results suggest that germling growth and self-thinning are more sensitive to variation in nutrient concentration in F. evanescens than in F. serratus. The potential implications of our findings for the understanding of eutrophication-related abundance changes in both species in southern Norway are discussed.Communicated by L. Eleven populations of the Pan-American sandy beach isopod Excirolana braziliensis, distributed from tropical (9°N) to temperate (39°S) sandy beaches in Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, were analyzed to determine latitudinal variations in: breeding and recruitment patterns, sex ratios, size of ovigerous females and of juveniles and length–fecundity relationships. E. braziliensis exhibited strong latitudinal patterns in all reproductive traits throughout its distribution range. Breeding and recruitment shifted from continuous to seasonal from tropical to temperate beaches, having a predominance of females at higher latitudes. In agreement with the latitudinal gradient hypothesis, ovigerous females inhabiting tropical sandy beaches (low latitudes) were smaller, became sexually mature at smaller sizes and had lower individual fecundity than on temperate beaches. Juveniles were also smallest at low latitudes. Between-ocean comparisons showed very similar reproductive characteristics for roughly the same latitude. These linked reproductive parameters suggest that the intensity of breeding effort is associated with the duration of the breeding season and geographically size-related characteristics of the species. Geographic variations in the breeding and recruitment seasons, as well as in individual fecundity, size structure of mature females and sex ratios, are proposed to have major consequences in explaining local variations in population demography. Mating is essential for sexually reproducing species to pass on their genes. For sexual parasites, this implies a need to switch the host in the search for a mate when potential partners are not available on the same host, although host switching includes risks like starvation and predation. Studies of mate-searching behavior predict that commonly only one sex searches for mating partners while the other remains stationary. In the present work, we experimentally infected rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with the fish ectoparasite Argulus coregoni and determined whether the sex, age and the presence of mating partners influenced the host switching activity. Our results show that increased host switching by A. coregoni occurred only after the parasite reached the adult stage and a difference between the sexes was also recorded. Host switching by mature males was enhanced when no mating partners were present on the same host, whereas females remained mainly stationary on their host regardless of male presence or absence. Our data therefore support the hypothesis that there is a strategic difference in reproductive behavior between males and females; males invest energy in mate searching while females are rather stationary and invest into body size and hence increased fecundity. Our data also showed that leaving the host to find a mate is potentially costly in terms of predation since a substantial number of free-swimming parasites were eaten by fish.  相似文献

The Trivers–Willard model predicts that in polygynous species, superior-quality females will maximize their fitness by producing male offspring. Using a sample of 1,780 Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) pups recorded over 31 years, we investigated relationships between offspring sex ratio and maternal age, reproductive experience, an index of maternal lifetime reproductive output, and annual environmental variations. We found evidence that females with higher index of lifetime reproductive output were more likely to produce male than female offspring but found only weak evidence that large-scale environmental variations influenced sex ratios. Our results suggest that mothers manipulate offspring sex to maximize their own fitness, and inherent maternal quality may influence offspring sex. These findings support the Trivers–Willard sex-allocation model. Interval between reproductive events is an important factor for iteroparous animals because it determines the number of clutches throughout life. This study examined whether female size, clutch size, shell size and prenuptial molting affected the clutch interval in the hermit crab Pagurus nigrivittatus. Precopulatory guarding pairs of P. nigrivittatus were sampled in the field and kept in the laboratory until the female extruded eggs. The clutch interval of each female was assessed as one of two types of relatively “short” and “long” intervals by checking whether the guarded female had eggs and/or egg cases from the preceding brood or not when the guarding pair was collected. The clutch interval was longer in females with prenuptial molting than those without molting and these females usually grew larger at the prenuptial molt. This suggests that female P. nigrivittatus with a long interval might allocate energy into growth at the expense of the number of clutches during the current reproductive season. The allocation to growth is theoretically predicted to decrease with female size. Gastropod shell size is also known to affect the reproductive activity in hermit crabs. However, female size did not significantly affect the clutch interval in P. nigrivittatus, and the effect of gastropod shell size on clutch interval was not consistent with previous empirical studies. These results may be caused by differences in the gastropod species of shell occupied by the females of P. nigrivittatus.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the Mediterranean vermetid gastropod Serpulorbis arenarius, a subtidal sessile solitary species that lives in shady rocky communities, was studied at two localities south-east of the Iberian Peninsula. Its population density is usually low, with specimens sometimes sparsely distributed. Its shell often appears to be covered by epibiotic organisms. The sex ratio is biased toward males (63%) in the populations of SE Spain, and the results point towards hermaphroditism with alternating sexuality. The results obtained suggest that all specimens are first males, change to females under some as yet unknown condition and, after the ovogenesis cycle has been completed, revert to the original sexual state (male). The possible adaptive forces that favour hermaphroditism in this species are discussed, and we hypothesise that the seizure of a spermatophore by males may stimulate sex change to female. Brooding females (51% of females studied) were found from March to December. In males, histological study of testes revealed that spermatogenesis seems to occur throughout the year. Females brooded between 5 and 28 (=15) egg capsules, which were attached by stalks to the inner surface of the shell. It is noteworthy that the gonads of two of the specimens brooding egg capsules were developing testes. The newly laid egg capsules were filled with an organic intracapsular matrix, in which 40–153 (=94) eggs were embedded. The mean diameter of the uncleaved ova was 352.5 µm. The organic intracapsular matrix and some nurse eggs were used as an extra-embryonic food source. Hatching occurred at an advanced veliger stage, immediately followed by metamorphosis. Therefore, the larval development of S. arenarius is of a lecithotrophic intracapsular type, with a short, free-swimming/crawling phase.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Flight initiation distance, the predator–prey distance when escape begins, is predicted by escape theory to decrease if fleeing entails loss of benefits. Shortening of flight initiation distance during social interactions is known only in males and only in a few species. In a previous study, male, but not female, Sceloporus virgatus lizards had shorter flight initiation distance when interacting with tethered conspecifics. Females in that study were not gravid or close to ovulating. I predicted that flight initiation distance would be shorter in gravid females that perform sidle-hopping displays to reject courtship than in lone females. I tested this prediction and examined effects of social interactions by males with free-ranging conspecifics to ensure that previous findings were not artifacts of tethering and experimental introduction of conspecifics. Flight initiation distance was shorter in females when interacting with males than when alone; it was also shorter in males interacting with either sex. Thus, when beneficial for reproductive reasons, social interaction affects flight initiation distance in females, but at other times, it does not. Lesser shortening of flight initiation distance in females than males may be a consequence of greater social benefit to males and protection of reproductive investment by females.  相似文献

Squid typically display considerable intra-specific plasticity in size and age-at-maturity in response to ambient environmental conditions, yet little is known of the mechanisms driving these variations. We examined the intra-specific variability in Nototodarus gouldi reproductive traits to determine patterns of energy allocation between somatic and reproductive processes over short temporal scales. Females caught during the cool months of May and July were larger, had slower lifetime growth, lower gonad investment, and better somatic condition than females caught during the warmer months, suggesting a trade-off between gonad investment and somatic condition in females. On the other hand, males showed a tight coupling between somatic condition and gonad investment for most months, with increases in somatic and gonad tissue occurring concurrently. In male squid, an increase in lifetime growth rate was coupled with an increase in the relative weights of somatic and reproductive structures, whereas in females, percent increase in body weight per day was correlated only with gonad development. Patterns of repro-somatic investment in mature females had implications for spawning strategies, since female squid with higher levels of gonad investment apparently released batches of eggs together as a group, regardless of body size, whereas females with low gonad investment possibly spawned their eggs independently of one another. In terms of life-history theory, male squid were able to respond rapidly to environmental fluctuations without compromising either the gonad or the soma. However, although mature females did not appear to respond as quickly to ambient conditions, female squid possibly produced two different reproductive strategies, possibly to maximise offspring survival in either a stable or a variable environment. Polygynous mating systems can inflict considerable costs on males, often causing the emergence of alternative mating strategies to ensure reproductive success. These strategies can lead to different morphs of color, size, or behavior. The present work was done on guinea pigs, a polygynous rodent species. Some males can show a reduced readiness for conflict, perhaps employing an alternative mating strategy. To test this hypothesis, a two-stage experiment was set up, with males (N = 16) and females (N = 16) initially living in isosexual groups. Visual and olfactory contact was possible through a wire mesh. Male agonistic behavior was observed for 15 days, confirming the existence of less-conflict-involved (LCI, N = 7) and more-conflict-involved males (MCI, N = 9). Significant differences were found for a conditional parameter, body mass, and a morphometric one, testis width: LCI consistently surpassed MCI. Hormonally, cortisol was comparable, while testosterone was distinctly higher in MCI. Next, males and females were joined and observed for further 24 days. Males initially lost weight but reached original mass towards the end of the experiment. Testis width patterns were similar. Again, LCI had higher body mass. Cortisol was comparable, but testosterone release 3 days after merging was significantly higher in LCI. Behaviorally, LCI exhibited significantly less male–male aggression and more socio-sexual behavior than MCI. The former were more successful, with 57% capable of accessing females, in contrast to 11% of MCI. The existence of two distinct behavioral phenotypes in guinea pig males suggests that different reproductive strategies may exist in this species.  相似文献

Sex allocation theory predicts that if variance in reproductive success differs between the sexes, females who are able to produce high-quality young should bias offspring sex ratio towards the sex with the higher potential reproductive success. We tested the hypothesis that high-quality (i.e., heavy) female eastern kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus) that bred early in the breeding season would produce male-biased clutches. A significant opportunity for sexual selection also exists in this socially monogamous but cryptically polygamous species, and we predicted that successful extra-pair (EP) sires would be associated with an excess of male offspring. Although population brood sex ratio did not differ from parity, it increased significantly with female body mass and declined with female breeding date, but was independent of the morphology and display (song) behavior (correlates of reproductive success) of social males and EP sires. Male offspring were significantly heavier than female offspring at fledging. Moreover, the probability that male offspring were resighted in subsequent years declined with breeding date, and was greater in replacement clutches, but lower when clutch size was large. Probability of resighting female offspring varied annually, but was independent of all other variables. Given that variance in reproductive success of male kingbirds is much greater than that of females, and that male offspring are more expensive to produce and have a higher probability of recruitment if fledged early in the season, our results support predictions of sex allocation theory: high-quality (heavy) females breeding when conditions were optimal for male recruitment produced an excess of sons.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial distribution patterns of a population of Talitrus saltator living on the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany (Italy) were studied. Bimonthly surveys were performed from March 1991 to January 1992 along transects using a standard system of pitfall traps and sieves for surface-active and burrowed individuals, respectively. Captured individuals were subdivided into sex and age classes (on the basis of the number of articles of the flagellum of the second antenna). Abundances were calculated for each sampling period and sex ratios were determined. For each sampling period the mean hour of surface activity was calculated together with the mean zonation of both surface-active and burrowing sandhoppers belonging to the different sex and age classes. Shifts in mean zonation between the resting and active phase were also determined. For each category of sex, age, and reproductive phase, simple and multiple regression analyses were used to find relationships of the mean zonation of surface-active animals with climatic data, and of the number of burrowed individuals with surface sand parameters recorded in correspondence to the sieves. On the whole, the results show that this Tyrrhenian population of T. saltator exhibited a bivoltine reproductive cycle and that the sex ratios of active sandhoppers were male or female biased according to the season. The variations in the mean hour of surface activity and in the zonation patterns of sandhoppers depended more on the age than on the sex. Furthermore distribution patterns were generally related to seasonal changes in the local climatic and substrate parameters. The observed differences between burrowing and activity zonations were interpreted on the basis of the nocturnal migrations of the different categories.  相似文献

The study of the male and female karyotypes of the polychaete Dinophilus gyrociliatus was performed with the aim of ascertaining the diploid number of chromosomes and confirming the existence of karyological differences between the two sexes. Our results evidenced that the female karyotype of D. gyrociliatus consists of 2n=24 chromosomes, while the male karyotype has 2n=23 chromosomes. X chromosomes are subtelocentric and much bigger than the autosomes. The size of the D. gyrociliatus chromosomes, which in the female embryos vary in length from little more than 2.8 wm to less than 0.7 wm, are relatively small by comparison with those of other polychaetes. The existence of maternal and environmental factors able to influence the sex ratio of D. gyrociliatus and chromosomal differences between the sexes confirms that: (1) sex determination is chromosomal and syngamic of the XX-X0 type and (2) control of the sex ratio is progamic and depends on genetic and environmental factors.  相似文献

Sex allocation theory for sequential hermaphrodites predicts the size at which an individual should change sex, given the different relationships between individual size and reproductive success in the two sexes. We studied a host-parasite system where the myxozoan Kudoa ovivora infects the ovaries of the reef fish Thalassoma bifasciatum, a protogynous sequential hermaphrodite. The parasite sporulates in the hosts eggs and renders them infertile. It is thus expected to reduce the females reproductive success, and could thereby influence host sex change. We present data from marked fish we observed in the field over 4 months. The data suggest that females infected with Kudoa ovivora have a lower reproductive success, change sex earlier and at a smaller size than uninfected females. These results are in agreement with predictions from sex allocation theory, and provide the first example of a possible parasitic influence on the sex allocation of its host.Communicated by P.
