Clupea harengus pallasi deposit their eggs in the coastal zone, which is the most dynamic part of the sea in respect to its regime. Salimity is one of the most variable factors on the spawning grounds. Observations were made in the seas of the European North and Far East, and in experiments where salinities varied from 0 to 70. Study of the influence of salinity on the development of sea herring eggs is of interest for several reasons. Firstly, salinity fluctuation patterns differ in different parts of a given habitat. In each area inhabited, salinity boundaries exist within which eggs can develop normally. Secondly, the levels of limiting salinities on spawning grounds differ noticeably in different seas. Hence, attention was paid to population-specific differences in the responses of eggs to salinity. Finally, detailed knowledge on the responses of sexual cells to low-salinity conditions helps to elucidate the ecological situation in areas with reduced salinity, and the reproductive potential of the population considered. Sexual cells of numerous populations of Pacific herring are capable of fertilization over a wide range of salinities. Fertilizability in low salinities and, partially, also in high salinities, reveals a population specificity. The responses of the eggs ofC. harengus pallasi to reduced salinities differ from those ofC. harengus harengus. Osmotic resistance of eggs to low salinities is considerably higher in the first-mentioned subspecies. Under salinity stress, eggs reveal individual differences which are not seen under optimum conditions of salinity. The time periods from exhausion of the yolk to the age of irreversible starvation for Pacific herring Clupea harengus pallasi larvae were 8.5, 7.0 and 6.0 d at 6°, 8° and 10°C, respectively. These periods are within the range perviously measured for Atlantic herring larvae and other temperature zone fish species; they are long compared to the periods for tropical species. The variation in the length of this period is due almost entirely to temperature; the natural logarithm of the time period from fertilization to irreversible starvation is highly correlated (r=0.91) with the mean rearing temperature for 25 species of pelagic marine fish larvae. The rates of growth and mortality, measured for 26 experimental populations of Pacific herring larvae reared at 6°, 8° and 10°C and ten ages of delayed first feeding, decreased and increased, respectively with increasing age of first feeding and increasing temperature. These rates, adjusted for the effects of rearing conditions, were compared with the rates for natural populations of herring larvae. Growth is generally faster in the sea than in experimental enclosures. Two of the eleven estimates of natural mortality rate were high enough to indicate possible catastrophic mass starvation. This is consistent with Hjort's critical period concept of year class formation and it suggests that mass starvation occurs in 18 to 36% of the natural populations of first feeding herring larvae.  相似文献

Predation of different-sized Hyperoche medusarum (Hyperiida: Amphipoda) on larvae of the Pacific herring Clupea harengus pallasi was studied in the laboratory. The attacking rate of H. medusarum was a function of herring larvae size as well as size of the predator, and varied from 0.15 to 0.95 larvae attacked h-1 per hyperiid. In the range of 7.55 to 16.05 mm total larval length, vulnerability to predation was highest for 13.3 and 13.7 mm larvae. Large hyperiids swam faster and covered a wider area during searching and were more effective predators than small ones. Herring (Clupea harengus pallasi) spawning sites in Puget Sound, Washington overlap spatially and temporally with blooms of Alexandrium catenella, a toxic dinoflagellate species responsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning. Consequently, newly hatched herring larvae may be regularly exposed to the suite of dissolved paralytic shellfish toxins that are released into the water column from toxic cells during blooms. To date, virtually nothing is known about the impacts of these neurotoxins on early developmental stages of marine fish. In the present study, herring larvae at three ages, 0 days post hatch (dph), 4 dph, and 11 dph, were exposed to dissolved saxitoxin (STX) in 24-h and multi-day exposures. All larvae were examined for sensorimotor function (i.e. spontaneous swimming behavior and touch response). Significant reductions in spontaneous and touch-activated swimming behavior occurred within 1 h of exposure. EC50s at 1 h of exposure were 1,500, 840, and 700 μg STX equiv. l−1 for larvae introduced to STX at 0, 4, and 11 dph, respectively. This progressive age-specific increase in STX-induced paralysis suggests that older larvae were more sensitive to the toxin than younger larvae. Interestingly, herring larvae at all ages exhibited a significant degree of neurobehavioral recovery within 4–24 h of continuous exposure relative to the 1-h time point. This recovery of normal motor behaviors was not observed in previous studies with freshwater zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae under the same continuous exposure conditions, suggesting that an adaptive detoxification or toxin sequestration mechanism may have evolved in some species of marine fish larvae. Our data reveal that (1) dissolved STX is bioavailable to marine finfish larvae, (2) the toxin is a paralytic agent with potencies that differ between developmental stages, and (3) STX-induced sensorimotor inhibition occurs rapidly but is transient in marine larvae. Collectively, these results suggest that dissolved algal toxins may have important sublethal effects on marine fish populations.  相似文献

The effects of petroleum hydrocarbons from two crude oils and one fuel oil (No. 1) were studied on the ontogenic development of the Baltic herring Clupea harengus membras L. Herring eggs exposed to water-soluble fractions of the oils at the time of fertilization showed no decrease in numbers of fertilized eggs compared to eggs exposed 6 or 72 h after fertilization. During embryongenesis, treatment with 3.1 to 8.9 ppm or 3.3 to 11.9 ppm total oil hydrocarbons from light fuel oil and the two crude oils respectively, gave rise to alterations in embryonic activity, decreased heart rate, and premature or delayed hatching. Although many larvae hatched from eggs exposed to contaminated water (3.1 to 11.9 ppm total oil hydrocarbons), the majority of the (70 to 100%) were malformed or dead 1 day after hatching. Exposure of eggs to 5.4–5.8 ppm total oil hydrocarbons resulted in significantly (P<0.001) decreased lengths of the larvae. Increased temperature (from 9° to 14°C) aggravated the effects of the oils. The results are discussed in relation to the potential effects of oil spills and chronic oil pollution on fish eggs and larvae in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

The relationship between sperm characteristics and reproductive success was examined in male herring, Clupea harengus L. Males were categorised as being first-time or repeat spawners on the basis of their age; they were also grouped according to whether their sperm were immediately active and exhibited forward motion on contact with seawater (FM) or had little or only vibratory motion (VM). Unlike the Pacific herring C. pallasii Valencienes, Atlantic herring sperm is usually motile on contact with seawater. The age, weight and gonadosomatic index (testes mass as a percentage of somatic mass = GSI) were measured and used as characteristics for individual fish. Sperm traits measured were (1) adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration, (2) sperm count, (3) duration of sperm motility. Reproductive success for each male was estimated from the fertilisation rate and from the length of larvae at hatching. Fertilisation rates for all fish were generally >80%. The ATP concentration of non-activated spermatozoa was negatively correlated with fertilisation rate. Among repeat spawners, fish with higher GSIs produced larvae that were larger at hatching. Although VM sperm fertilised eggs at rates equivalent to fertilisation by FM sperm, the larvae produced by VM sperm were significantly smaller at hatching. Larval length tended to increase in parallel with the duration of sperm motility, but the relationship was not significant in these tests. The results did not indicate any age or size pattern to spawning readiness in male herring. Sperm that are not yet ready to be shed are not fully motile on contact with seawater, but are still capable of fertilising eggs that hatch successfully. There is likely to be a progression of males which come into spawning readiness within a spawning shoal; therefore it is possible that paternal influences would result in a progressive decrease in larval size over the spawning period in winter-spawning Celtic Sea herring. The number, size, and carbon and nitrogen contents of eggs in the pouches of a euphausiid crustacean, Nematoscelis difficilis Hansen, were examined. A clear linear relationship exists between the number of eggs in the pouch and the body weight of the maternal euphausiid. The eggs are not spherical in shape, and the size of eggs is greater in larger egg masses. The carbon content of the egg masses (50.2%) is higher than that of the bodies (40.7%). The carbon: nitrogen ratio (C/N) is also higher in the egg masses than in the bodies of euphausiids. The carbon content of the eggs is equivalent to 28.4% of the body carbon, the nitrogen content to 19.2% of the body nitrogen.  相似文献

Recruitment of capelin in the Barents Sea fail when juvenile herring and cod are abundant and the potential for feeding competition of wild sympatric capelin and herring larvae and small cod juveniles were investigated. The frequency of gut evacuation after capture of capelin larvae were also studied in mesocosms. Small capelin larvae (<35 mm length) fed on small prey including phytoplankton, invertebrate eggs and nauplii, bivalves, other invertebrate larvae and small copepods. Calanus copepodites were only observed in large capelin larvae (>26 mm length). Calanus copepodites were the major food sources for contemporary herring larvae (25–35 mm length) and Calanus and euphausiids were the major prey for small juvenile herring (37–60 mm length) and cod (18–40 mm length). Capelin larvae reared in mesocosms evacuated the guts shortly after capture. Capelin larvae had a smaller mouth and fed on smaller prey than herring and cod of the same length. This implies that the small capelin larvae, in contrast to sympatric small herring and cod, are not tightly linked to the food chain involving Calanus and euphausiids. Thus, exploitative competition between capelin larvae and planktivorous fish that rely on Calanus and euphausiids in the Barents Sea may be relaxed.  相似文献

Using herring (Clupea harengus) eggs and larvae from Baltic spring spawners, the biological effects of sulfuric pollutants (largely FeSO4 and H2SO4) which are scheduled to be released daily into the North Sea in large quantities, have been tested. Dilutions (1:8000, 1:16000, 1:24000 and 1:32000) of the sulfuric pollutants were used as test media. Throughout all experiments water temperature was maintained at 8.0°±0.2°C, salinity near 16.5; eggs were artificially fertilized 1 or 6 to 7 h after catching the parent individuals and, attached to glass plates, incubated in 1 l aerated containers. In all test media brownish precipitates, which resulted from diluting the sulfuric pollutants with 50% sea water, tend to adhere to the egg surfaces, thereby possibly interfering with gaseous and other exchanges between egg and surrounding medium. Under conditions of maximum test medium effectiveness, percentages of successful fertilization and of egg survival are considerably reduced; diameter of fertilized eggs remains smaller; embryonic growth rate is retarded while the heart frequency tends to increase (indicating physiological stress); duration of incubation is shortened: percentage of successful hatching decreases and structural abnormalities of freshly hatched larvae increases. Dilutions down to 1:24000 and 1:32000 have rather limited effects. Exposure of 1 to 3 day old, healthy herring larvae to the 4 test media leads to failure of performing prey catching manoeuvres in 1:32000 and 1:24000, to impaired locomotory performances in 1:16000, and practically to paralysis, shrinkage, permanently bent bodies and death within a few days in 1:8000. Although the present study needs deepening through further and more detailed experiments, it can be said that the pollutants under consideration represent a danger to herring eggs and larvae at least up to a dilution of 1:32000.  相似文献

Recent studies have indicated that populations of gelatinous zooplankton may be increasing and expanding in geographic coverage, and these increases may in turn affect coastal fish populations. We conducted trawl surveys in the northern California Current and documented a substantial biomass of scyphomedusae consisting primarily of two species (Chrysaora fuscescens and Aurelia labiata). Spatial overlap of these jellyfish with most pelagic fishes, including salmon, was generally low, but there were regions of relatively high overlap where trophic interactions may have been occurring. We compared feeding ecology of jellyfish and pelagic fishes based on diet composition and found that trophic overlap was high with planktivorous species that consume copepods and euphausiid eggs such as Pacific sardines (Sardinops sagax), northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), Pacific saury (Cololabis saira), and Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi). Moreover, isotope and diet analyses suggest that jellyfish occupy a trophic level similar to that of small pelagic fishes such as herring, sardines and northern anchovy. Thus jellyfish have the potential, given their substantial biomass, of competing with these species, especially in years with low ecosystem productivity where prey resources will be limited.  相似文献

In a Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) spawning ground study, carried out in summer 1982 in the northern Baltic proper, spawning herring were encountered on two line transects on June 14. The spawning behaviour of minor groups as well as of a large school was studied in situ by four divers for approximately three hours. No behavioural differences or systematic coordinated behaviour between the sexes could be detected. Most of the spawning took place in a limited depth interval, 0.5 to 4 m, and Ceramium tenuicorne was the substrate most used.  相似文献

It has been suggested that larval survival determines the year-class strength in most marine fish species. During their growth and development, the ability of the larvae to catch prey and avoid predation will increase. However, the factors affecting short-term changes in the growth of Baltic Sea herring have been little studied in the field. We collected Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) larvae from five different towing areas in the Archipelago Sea (SW Finland) during May and June 1989, right after the main spawning season. Twenty thousand two hundred and ten larvae were analysed and the area-specific growth rate (i.e. increase in standard length) was estimated by tracing the larval cohorts from the length-frequency data. This represents the first Baltic herring study with daily sampling during a long study period. The growth rate was related to environmental factors, such as temperature, number of zooplankters, and wind speed and direction. Large variation in larval growth rate occurred between areas: lowest and highest growth rates were 0.18 and 0.52 mm·day-1. Temperature was an important variable controlling larval-fish growth rate. An increase of one 1°C in average water temperature corresponded to an increase in growth rate of 0.043 mm·day-1. This may have been caused either by a direct temperature effect (changes in metabolic rate) or by the indirect effect of changes in food availability. We also found the densest herring populations in the areas with highest average water temperature. However, temperature and larval growth rate both increased towards the inner archipelago.  相似文献

The major inorganic and organic osmolytes responsible for hydrating the oocytes during pre-ovulatory meiotic maturation in autumn- and spring-spawning stocks of Atlantic herring are examined. Despite the ovulated eggs of spring-spawning herring being 1.6- to 2-fold larger than the autumn-spawning stock, the GSI (27 ± 3%) and degree of oocyte hydration (70–72% water) were similar. Normalising the data with respect to dry mass revealed that the physiological mechanisms underlying the maturational influx of water were the same for both classes of egg. Cl, K+ and Pi together with a small pool of free amino acids (FAA) represented the driving forces for oocyte hydration. K+ (autumn and spring) and Pi (spring) maintained their concentrations in the ovulated eggs, while all other ions, including Cl, Na+, NH4 + and Mg2+ were significantly diluted. In contrast the FAA concentration increased during the hydration process. Amongst the inorganic ions, Cl showed the greatest increase in the ovulated eggs. The FAA content doubled from 1.5 to 3.3% of dry mass during oocyte hydration and accounted for 29% of the calculated ovoplasmic osmolality in the ovulated eggs from both autumn- and spring-spawners. This significant osmotic effect of the small pool of FAA was due to the low water content of the benthic eggs. The differential movement of the inorganic and organic osmolytes that underly oocyte hydration in Atlantic herring are discussed in relation to current models of transmembrane ion flux.  相似文献

Successful spawning of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua L.) is restricted to the deep basins of the Baltic Sea and is dependent on abiotic conditions such as salinity and water oxygen content. Due to irregular inflows of saline water from the North Sea, the conditions for spawning fluctuate and consequently so does the cod stock. In May and June 1990 eggs were obtained from spawning cod caught off northern Gotland, Sweden. Our investigation revealed neutral egg buoyancy for Baltic cod at a salinity of 14.4±1.1 ppt, with a slight decrease some days before hatching. Today salinities of this magnitude occur only in the Bornholm basin, whereas in the Gdansk and Gotland basins the eggs sink toward the bottom and are exposed to lethal oxygen conditions.  相似文献

During the course of its embryonic development, the European lobster Homarus gammarus Linnaeus exhibits progressive increases in content of water (54.0 to 83.1%), ash (2.7 to 16.7%), protein (47.4 to 50.9%) and non-protein nitrogen (1.0 to 2.4%), and steady decreases in content of fat (43.8 to 25.4%) and energy (6343 to 5431 cal/g dry organic substance). Cumulative yolk utilization efficiency during the total development is 81.8% for dry weight; the corresponding value for energy is 60.1, for protein 75.6 and for fat 47.4%. Energy content of a single egg is 10.49 cal. Of 4.20 cal expended for metabolic processes of the embryo, only 13.3% energy is drawn from protein oxidation; fat oxidation supplies as much as 87.7% energy, that of carbohydrate only 2.3%. Embryonic development results in a remarkable decrease in net yolk utilization efficiency, which falls from 85.5% in the early developmental stages, to less than 70% in later developmental stages. The mean dry weight of a single egg membrane increases from 38 g (2.2% of egg weight) in a freshly laid and attached egg, to 81 g in an egg with an almost completely developed embryo. This result supports the earlier observation of Cheung (1966) that the formation of the inner chitinous egg membrane occurs after the egg is laid and attached to the setum. Protein seems to be the major constituent of the egg membrane (4049 cal/g dry weight), which has the following composition: protein 70.4%, non-protein nitrogen 0.13%, ash 2.83%. Initial permeability of the egg membrane to water (about 6% of the total water requirement is let in) is followed by a period during which the egg membrane is almost impermeable to water (stages I to III); the egg membrane becomes permeable to water again and lets in 85% of the total water requirement (the rest, i.e. 9%, is metabolic water) at a relatively advanced stage of development. These assumed changes in egg membrane permeability appear to be indicative of variations in the egg's osmoconcentration leading to shiftings in net transport of water. Rates of water and salt uptake during embryonic development are essentially parallel (Fig. 1). The egg membrane remains permeable to salts throughout development; salt intake almost doubles after the egg passes through stage III. A single egg, weighing 3.7 mg requires 4.9 mg water for successful completion of embryonic development. The imbibition of water by the developing marine demersal egg seems to (1) serve in osmotic hatching; (2) float the hatched larva by means of specific gravity reduction; (3) aid the larva to quickly adjust its body temperature. The simple osmotic hatching mechanism, proposed by previous workers, seems to be inadequate to account for the events and timing of the hatching process in the lobster. It is suggested that hatching time is determined not solely by increased internal pressure caused by inflow of water and salts, but also by some unknown internal factor. In the lobster egg, as well as in many other marine demersal eggs, protein metabolism is suppressed to a considerable extent, and fat metabolism is geared up Thus, the non-cleidoic lobster eggs exhibit metablic properties which are typical of cleidoic eggs. Resting eggs of Acartia spp. (presumably A. bifilosa Giesbr.) at densities between 65 and 125 eggs cm-2 were found in sediment off the southern coast of Finland and represent the first observations of dormant calanoid eggs in the Baltic Sea. The highest egg densities were found at sediment depths between 4 and 8 cm. The hatching percentage varied between 0 and 90% in the different sediment layers and at different experimental temperatures (13, 16 and 19°C). Some nauplii emerged from the eggs extracted from sediment layers 9 to 10 cm beneath the surface layer and other nauplii emerged from eggs after 82 d of dark storage at 3°C. Light was not needed to trigger hatching; the nauplii were able to hatch in darkness when the eggs were resuspended in filtered seawater. Indirect evidence suggests that the marked spring peak of Acartia spp. nauplii seen in a monitoring data from the years 1973 to 1984 was derived from benthic eggs and not from spawning. The possible mechanisms for induction of hatching and the adaptive benefits of resting egg production for A. bifilosa are discussed.  相似文献

Seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of resting eggs of four species of marine cladocerans, Penilia avirostris Dana, Podon polyphemoides (Leuckart), Evadne tergestina Claus and Evadne nordmanni Lovén, were investigated in association with their planktonic populations in the central part of the Inland Sea of Japan for a period of over two years. Most numerous were the eggs of P. avirostris, followed by those of the species in the aforementioned order. There was a marked seasonal fluctuation in the number of eggs that was closely correlated with the occurrence of the planktonic population for each species. The egg-number was highest just before the planktonic population disappeared from the water column, and gradually decreased thereafter until a minimum value was reached shortly before the new planktonic population appeared in the next season. The pattern of fluctuation in number was found to be very similar among all four species, indicating strongly that the cladoceran populations in this warm temperate sea may persist either as plankton in warmer seasons or as benthic resting eggs in colder seasons. The possible causes of the decrease in egg density in bottom sediments are discussed.  相似文献

Here we evaluate the effects of two quantitatively very important components of the water soluble fractions of fuel oils (naphthalene and 1,2-dimethylnaphthalene, hereafter NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively) on the survival, feeding and egg production rates, and viability of eggs of the coastal copepod Paracartia (Acartia) grani. Acute toxicity responses resulted in lethal concentrations (LC50) of 2,535 and 161 μg l−1 for NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively, with no evidence of narcotic effects. Hydrocarbon-specific differences in the toxicity response indicate that sublethal effects (EC50) on feeding by C2-NAPH were likely driven by induced mortality, whereas NAPH has direct negative effects on feeding. Sublethal effects on egg production rates followed a similar detrimental pattern to the one exhibited by feeding rates, suggesting that the lower egg production rates were mediated by the decrease in feeding rates. At the exposure time tested (24 h), the 50% reduction effective concentrations (EC50) determined for sublethal effects were relatively high in comparison with hydrocarbons’ concentrations found under natural circumstances. Long exposure (4 days) of P. grani adults to the tested hydrocarbons at concentrations well below the recorded EC50, however, had no significant effects on feeding, egg production and hatching rates. The viability of the eggs was either not affected or only slightly influenced when healthy eggs were incubated under very high concentrations (up to 6,400 and 700 μg l−1 NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively). The significance of the effects of oil spills on marine zooplankton communities is discussed in light of the results presented in this study.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the development and hatching of resting eggs of the Ponto-Caspian Cercopagis pengoi was studied experimentally in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Morphological changes were monitored as the development of the resting eggs proceeded. Sexual reproduction of the C. pengoi population in the Gulf of Finland was evaluated by combining the data from hatching experiments and resting egg abundances in the sediment. Development time of resting eggs was dependent on temperature: increase in the temperature shortened the time needed until hatching. Hatching success was also dependent on incubation temperature. Almost sixfold increase in hatching success was detected when temperature increased two degrees above the storage temperature. Average resting egg abundances varied between 0.16 and 0.49 eggs cm−3 in the 0–6 cm sediment layer.  相似文献

The anti-predator behaviour of Baltic crustacean planktivores was studied in feeding experiments under predation pressure of herring. The experiments were conducted with pelagic mysids: Mysis mixta and Mysis relicta, and with Cercopagis pengoi, a non-indigenous cladoceran, which invaded the Baltic Sea in 1992. Zooplankton was offered as prey. Two kinds of experiments were performed in the absence and presence of chemical predator cues: (1) two-prey experiments with prey, which have poor or good escape responses and all three planktivores and (2) natural prey experiments with mysids in natural zooplankton assemblages. The results showed that all three species reacted to the chemical cue of herring by decreasing their feeding rate and altering prey selection. C. pengoi selected easily captured prey (rotifers) in two-prey experiments under predation risk while selection for any prey was evident in mysids in natural prey experiments only in the absence of predator cues. This indicates that planktivores have different anti-predator strategies, which are modified by their own prey capture abilities. C. pengoi was a very efficient predator on small prey with size-specific prey consumption rate 5 to 18 times the rate of mysids. Results show that the studied planktivores are capable of adjusting their feeding behaviour to decrease their conspicuousness in order to increase survival under predation risk. Further, results support the view that C. pengoi has adapted well to the Baltic ecosystem, sharing food niche with pelagic mysids and most probably having a strong influence on the whole pelagic food web.  相似文献
