The assemblage of solitary ascidians in rocky subtidal habitats of the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA, is dominated numerically by a few species of stolidobranchs: Pyura haustor, Halocynthia igaboja, Cnemidocarpa finmarkiensis and Boltenia villosa. Several phlebobranch species occur abundantly only on floating docks and/or muddy bottoms, where they co-occur with P. haustor and other stolidobranchs. These patterns of abundance correlate with feeding preferences and distributional patterns of the predatory snail Fusitriton oregonensis, which occurs only in rocky subtidal sites, prefers ascidians over other invertebrates as prey and prefers phlebobranchs over stolidobranchs. With the exception of B. villosa, stolidobranchs commonly co-occuring with the snail in the rocky subtidal are not eaten. Transplants of phlebobranchs from docks to rocky subtidal sites and transplants of F. oregonensis into established dock communities suggest that predation by the snail may largely explain the observed patterns of absolute and relative abundance.  相似文献

Gametophytes of two species of Porphyra collected around San Juan Island, Washington in 1986 and acclimated to low light conditions in culture showed different resistances to photoinhibition of photosynthesis. The intertidal species P. perforata J. Agardh exhibited photoinhibition at one-third the rate exhibited by the subtidal species P. nereocystis Anderson following treatments at 2000 mol photons m-2 s-1 under conditions of full hydration and optimal temperature. The greater resistance of P. perforata to photoinhibition could not be attributed to reduced photosynthetic pigment concentration, higher photosynthetic capacity, avoidance of light by chloroplast movement or to enhanced rates of photorespiration. Total carotenoid concentrations were similar in the two species. It is probable that the mechanisms of this resistance are operating at the level of the thylakoid membranes. Resistance to photoinhibition represents an adaptation of photosynthesis in P. perforata which may contribute to its persistance in the extreme environment of its intertidal habitat.  相似文献

The lined chiton Tonicella lineata (Wood, 1815) is found on enerusting coralline algae in the lower rocky intertidal zone of Oregon and San Juan Island, Washington, USA. An encrusting coralline alga is the major food item of this chiton. Experiments were performed to test the settling response of T. lineata larvae to various algae and other substrata. In these experiments, the larvae would settle only on pieces of encrusting coralline algae and piecesof ceramic roofing tile soaked in a coralline algal extract. The settling stimulus is probably chemical in nature, and is inactivated by boiling. In laboratory cultures, normal development stops at the trochophore stage (110 to 160 h, depending on the temperature). Metamorphosis and further development will take place only after stttlement on encrusting coralline algae.  相似文献

The relationship between food ingested and NH + 4 excretion rate was investigated for female Calanus pacificus collected in August, 1982, from the San Juan Archipelago, Washington State, USA. The copepods were preconditioned to 6 densities of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (0 to 104 cells ml–1) for 30 h before the experiment. The experiment was conducted with nutrients added in excess to maintain equal rates of NH + 4 uptake by the diatoms at all densities. Although ingestion rates of C. pacificus varied from 0 to over 20% of body N d–1 at the different food levels, excretion was a constant 6.6 nM NH + 4 copepod–1 h–1 or about 10% of body N d–1. This ingestion-excretion relationship, which is consistent with previous respiration and fecundity studies, suggests that the ecological dominance of C. pacificus only under conditions of high food abundance may be due to a dramatic increase in its growth efficiency as ingestion increases above the level supporting a constant metabolic rate. The maintenance of a constant level of metabolism during relatively short periods of low food abundance may be advantageous if it allows the copepod to exploit more effectively short-term variability in its food resulting from environmental heterogeneity or vertical migration.Contribution No. 1360 from the School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA  相似文献

The ghost shrimp Neotrypaea californiensis is imported into southern California from Oregon and Washington for use as live bait in recreational marine fisheries. We studied the population genetic structure of N. californiensis across much its range to assess the possibility that the transport of ghost shrimp across phylogeographic boundaries poses a risk of homogenizing existing genetic variation in the species. Analyses of two mitochondrial DNA markers showed little phylogeographic structure across the sampled range, suggesting that this risk is low. Unexpectedly, mitochondrial DNA analyses revealed that a second putative species of ghost shrimp frequently coexisted with N. californiensis in southern California intertidal habitats; almost all previous studies of soft-sediment communities in the region report the presence of N. californiensis only. We also assessed the possibility that the import of ghost shrimp might pose a risk of introduction of a parasitic castrator, the bopyrid isopod Ione cornuta, into southern California waters, where it does not appear to be native. Prevalence of living I. cornuta in samples purchased from bait shops was high (5.8%), suggesting that this is a real risk that merits further study.  相似文献

Many species of tellinacean bivalves mainly deposit-feed but are also known to vary their feeding behavior in response to predation and to the availability of suspended organic matter relative to that of sedimentary organic matter. This study showed that three species of the Pacific genusMacoma (Macoma nasuta Conrad, 1937,Macoma secta Conrad, 1837, andMacoma inquinata Deshayes, 1855, from the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA) varied their deposit-feeding behavior in response to water flow near the sediment-water interface and to sediment transport. In the summers of 1987, 1988 and 1989, water velocity was varied in a large racetrack flume, in order to change both water velocity and bottom sediment transport. In quiet water, the inhalant siphon was protruded far from the siphon hole. As water velocity increased, with little or no sediment transport, the deposit-feeding radius decreased. Qualitative observations suggested that this was related to the drag on the siphon. InM. secta, the distance of siphon protrusion was not related to body size. Under conditions of higher near-bottom water velocity, combined with bottom sediment transport, some individuals ceased to deposit-feed, while others sustained feeding by ingesting sediment within the siphon hole, at least 1 cm beneath the sediment-water interface. These results suggest that hydrodynamic conditions are a major determinant of feeding behavior, and previous explanations of variable feeding behavior as a response to predation may have to be adjusted to accommodate this expanded set of responses.  相似文献

Spawning behaviors observed from May 1981 through August 1983 in the laboratory and field are described and compared for twelve species of northeast Pacific holothuroids collected from waters of the San Juan Archipelago, Washington. For many species, elevation of the anterior end, stretching of the introvert, tentacle waving, and swaying are behaviors commonly associated with gamete release. Less common activities include waving of introvert podia, waves of body wall contractions, errant males, aggregations, and pseudocopulation. Positively buoyant eggs of four species [Psolus chitonoides Clark, Cucumaria miniata (Brandt), C. piperata (Stimpson), and C. fallax (Ludwig)] were packaged in pellets, ropes, or strands and released passively; a female Molpadia intermedia (Ludwig) discharged negatively buoyant eggs in a single explosive burst. Two externally brooding sea cucumbers [C. lubrica (Clark) and C. pseudocurata Deichmann] produced strands of dilution-resistant sperm that were carried by currents to nearby females. Three species commonly sympatric [P. chitonoides, C. miniata, and Eupentacta quinquesemita (Selenka)] in high-current rocky habitats have overlapping spring breeding seasons, but spawn at different hours of the day. Please address all requests for reprints to Dr. McEuen at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution  相似文献

Color patterns of the shallow-water shrimps Heptacarpus pictus and H. paludicola are formed by chromatosomes (usually termed chromatophores) located beneath the translucent exoskeleton. Development of color patterns is related to size (age) and sex. The color expressed is determined by the chromatosome pigment dispersion, arrangement, and density. In populations with well-developed coloration (H. pictus from Cayucos, California, 1976–1978, H. paludicola from Argyle Channel, San Juan Island, Washington, June–July, 1978), prominent coloration was a characteristic of maturing females, breeding females, and some of the larger males. In the Morro Bay, California, population of H. paludicola (sampled 1976–1978), color patterns were poorly developed except in a few large females. In both species, most shrimp lose color at night because of pigment retraction in certain chromatosomes. In both species, there are 5 basic morphs: 1 transparent and 4 colored morphs. In the colored morphs, the color patterns are composed of bands, stripes, and spots which appear to disrupt the body outline. Each color morph also has a common environmental color in its color pattern, e.g the green of green algae, the whites and pinks of dead and living coralline algae, and various shades of tidepool litter. These shrimps are apparently under heavy predation pressure by fish, and it is suggested that the color patterns are camouflage against such visually-hunting predators.  相似文献

Levels of genetic polymorphism were surveyed at two enzyme loci (LAP, PGI) in 2 intertidal and 6 subtidal species of the bivalve genus Macoma living in the waters of the San Juan Islands (Washington and Canada). The temporal environmental variability-genetic variability hypothesis predicts that intettidal species should have greater levels of genetic polymorphism than subtidal species. This is not true for the genus Macoma. However, at the PGI locus, genetic polymorphism was proportional to niche breadth in both the intertidal and subtidal species, but only for intertidal species at the LAP locus. These results support the contention that temporal environmental variability is not necessarily important in maintaining genetic variability, but that environmental heterogeneity may select for increased polymorphism at some loci.  相似文献

Newly settled juvenile ascidians were transplanted into shaded and unshaded sites at two subtidal depths to test the hypothesis that photonegative settlement behavior enhances juvenile survival. Silt, filamentous algae and grazing gastropods (Margarites pupillus) were identified as sources of mortality associated primarily with non-cryptic microhabitats. Silt inflicted heavy mortality on all six species tested. Algal overgrowth was important in shallow water, where it increased mortality and depressed growth rates over a 14-d period. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that gastropods can remove juvenile ascidians from the substratum. The sources of post-settlement mortality investigated may help determine distributional patterns of ascidians in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA, and may also represent selective pressures that maintain negative phototaxis in the behavioral repertoires of ascidian tadpoles.  相似文献

Large‐scale infrastructure projects commonly have large effects on the environment. The planned construction of the Nicaragua Canal will irreversibly alter the aquatic environment of Nicaragua in many ways. Two distinct drainage basins (San Juan and Punta Gorda) will be connected and numerous ecosystems will be altered. Considering the project's far‐reaching environmental effects, too few studies on biodiversity have been performed to date. This limits provision of robust environmental impact assessments. We explored the geographic distribution of taxonomic and genetic diversity of freshwater fish species (Poecilia spp., Amatitlania siquia, Hypsophrys nematopus, Brycon guatemalensis, and Roeboides bouchellei) across the Nicaragua Canal zone. We collected population samples in affected areas (San Juan, Punta Gorda, and Escondido drainage basins), investigated species composition of 2 drainage basins and performed genetic analyses (genetic diversity, analysis of molecular variance) based on mitochondrial cytb. Freshwater fish faunas differed substantially between drainage basins (Jaccard similarity = 0.33). Most populations from distinct drainage basins were genetically differentiated. Removing the geographic barrier between these basins will promote biotic homogenization and the loss of unique genetic diversity. We found species in areas where they were not known to exist, including an undescribed, highly distinct clade of live bearing fish (Poecilia). Our results indicate that the Nicaragua Canal likely will have strong impacts on Nicaragua's freshwater biodiversity. However, knowledge about the extent of these impacts is lacking, which highlights the need for more thorough investigations before the environment is altered irreversibly.  相似文献

Only five of the 14 species of solitary ascidians in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA commonly co-occur with an abundant predator of the rocky subtidal, the gastropod Fusitriton oregonensis. None of the common subtidal species is defended by vanadium or sulfuric acid; concentrations of these substances are highest in species that are eaten readily by F. oregonensis and are uncommon in the rocky subtidal. Experimental manipulations indicate that Halocynthia igaboja are protected by stiff spines of the tunic. The defense mechanism of Pyura haustor consists of a tough, leathery tunic with inorganic inclusions, and microscopic spines around the siphons. Boltenia villosa and Styela gibbsii are eaten by snails in the laboratory, but live in areas where the predator is abundant. Both find refuge as epizooites on P. haustor and H. igaboja. The mechanisms by which Cnemidocarpa finmarkiensis persists in the presence of F. oregonensis is unknown.  相似文献

Measurements have been made of oxygen consumption rates O2 of 10 specimens of the mesopelagic deep-sea fangtooth fish Anoplogaster cornuta. Determinations were made at 1 atm pressure, at temperatures of 3°, 7°, and 10°C, at dissolved oxygen concentrations ranging from near saturation to zero, with the fish swimming at low, controlled speeds. Weight-specific O2 were uniformly low. They showed Q10's of 2.5 and 1.3, respectively, in the temperature ranges 3° to 7°C, and 7° to 10°C, at dissolved oxygen concentrations above 2 ml (standard temperature and presusure, STP)/1. Measurable O2 continued in these fish at dissolved oxygen concentrations down to the lowest levels detectable with our instruments. At 7°C the average critical oxygen tension (P c ) for the entire group was near 35 mm Hg. However, there is a statistically significant positive slope to the regression line relating O2 to P c for individual fish. The physiological and ecological significance of these results is discussed, particularly with reference to thermal effects and to the basis for survival by A. cornuta in the oxygen minimum layers of the eastern Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

We studied how the growth, reproduction, and survival of a common intertidal rockweed (Fucus distichus) varied across its tidal elevation at 14 sites around San Juan Island, Washington, USA in spring–summer and fall-winter seasons. We also measured a suite of environmental factors including temperature, light, emersion time, slope, fetch, and herbivory. To interpret the response of Fucus we included measurements of phlorotannins and carbon storage compounds (mannitol, laminarin). Growth and reproduction exhibited parallel patterns across tidal zones and sites. Tidal zone was a significant source of variation for many Fucus response variables, whereas variation between sites was high but not generally a significant factor explaining Fucus growth and physiology. Unexpectedly, the tidal zone in which Fucus achieved its highest growth and reproduction switched between seasons. High zone thalli grew and reproduced better than Mid zone thalli in fall but not in spring. This result can be explained by different combinations of factors influencing Fucus in each season. In spring, longer emersion times due to daytime low tides resulted in lower growth rates higher on the shore, likely due to carbon limitation. In fall during nighttime low tides, emersion and carbon limitation stresses were minimal. Overall, fall growth was lower than spring growth, but low fall light was not responsible. Instead, warmer average fall temperatures in the High zone apparently favored growth and reproduction relative to the Mid zone. In contrast, Mid zone thalli were subjected to more intense herbivory and hydrodynamic stress associated with wave exposure and steep substrata during the fall. At least for some seaweeds, living in the presumably more stressful high zone can actually confer higher integrated performance.  相似文献

Ecology of toxicity in marine sponges   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
G. Green 《Marine Biology》1977,40(3):207-215
An investigation of the ecology of toxicity in marine sponges from different latitudes on the North American continent was made. Results indicated that toxicity in sponges increased with decreasing latitude. Three of the 34 species (9%) of sponges from San Juan Island, Washington, USA (48°N), were toxic to fishes. Nine of the 44 species (20%) of sponges from Santa Catalina Island, California, USA (33°N), were toxic. Seven of the 11 species (64%) of sponges from Zihuatanejo Bay, Guerrero, México (17°N), were toxic. Twenty-seven of the 36 species (75%) of sponges from La Blanquilla, Veracruz, México (19°N), were toxic. Most of these toxic sponges are openly exposed to fishes. The most common exposed sponges proved to be highly toxic to fishes. Force-feeding experiments conducted with wrasses demonstrated the effectiveness of the toxin of sponges. A hypothesis is proposed which explains the relationship between species diversity of fishes and sponge toxicity with latitude.  相似文献

Predicting the biological impacts of climate change requires an understanding of how temperature alters organismal physiology and behavior. Given differences in reproductive physiology between sexes, increases in global temperature may be experienced differently by the males and females of a species. This study tested for sex-specific effects of increased air temperature on foraging, growth, and survival of an intertidal snail, Nucella ostrina (San Juan Island, Washington, 48–30′44″N, 123–08′43″W). Snails exhibited periodic peaks in foraging. Subjecting snails to elevated low tide air temperatures did not alter the timing or magnitude of this pattern. Despite similar temporal patterns in foraging, females foraged more than males, even when the risk of thermal stress was high. While males and females appear to have a similar body temperature threshold for optimal growth, females were more likely to cross that threshold resulting in a loss of body mass when exposed to daily increases in air temperature. These results suggest that the consequences of a warming climate in the short term may be different for males and females of N. ostrina, but also imply longer-term costs of reduced reproductive output, abundance, and distribution of this ubiquitous intertidal predator. Generally, this study points to the possible significance of sex-specific responses in an increasingly warm world.  相似文献

We observed kelp gametophytes endophytic in the cell walls of 17 species of red algae from the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA. Host algae were collected primarily from three sites dominated by different kelp assemblages, including (1) a subtidal site dominated by Agarum fimbriatum Harvey, (2) a second subtidal site dominated by Nereocystis luetkeana (Mertens) Postels et Ruprecht, and (3) a floating dock on which the dominant kelp species were Alaria marginata Postels et Ruprecht, Laminaria groenlandica Rosenvinge, and Costaria costata (C. Agardh) Saunders. Most hosts were filamentous [e.g. Pleonosporium vancouverianum (J. Agardh) J. Agardh, Callithamnion acutum Kylin], or polysiphonous [e.g. Polysiphonia paniculata Montagne, Pterosiphonia dendroidea (Montagne) Falkenberg]; however, similar endophytes were also observed in membranous or bladed red algae [e.g. Membranoptera platyphylla (Setchell et Gardner) Kylin, Polyneura latissima (Harvey) Kylin]. Dozens to hundreds of separate kelp gametophytes were associated with single host thalli. In many cases, the gametophytes developed conspicuous oogonia raised above the thallus surface on characteristic stalks. Presumed zygotes developed through typical embryonic stages into juvenile sporophytes. We argue that the endophytic habit plays an important role in the biology of kelp gametophytes. Barnacles of the same species (Balanus glandula) show differences both in shell morphology and in their ability to resist crushing from impact at two sites within 8 km of each other which differ in their natural exposure to wave-borne debris (Cattle Point and False Bay, San Juan Island, Washington, USA). In studies performed in 1987, barnacles with shells of a given base diameter at the site exposed to more impact (Cattle Point) were found to have smaller bodies, shorter and thicker shells, and a more protected placement of their opercular valves than barnacles at the protected site. When tested with a standard impact, barnacles from the exposed site were more resistant to crushing both on the first impact and (for those surviving that test) on a second impact 2 wk later. The morphological differences between the two populations may be due to a combination of different shell: body growth rate ratios at the two sites plus passive remodelling of the exposed barnacles by small impacts. The morphological changes at the exposed site, although gained passively, fortuitously provide improved performance in resisting crushing from impact.Sessile Cirripedes, partly from being attached to surfaces having very different characters, partly from undergoing a varying amount of disintegration, and partly from unknown innate causes, are extremely variable As whole groups of specimens often vary in exactly the same manner, it is not easy to exaggerate the difficulty of discriminating species and varieties.Darwin (1854)  相似文献

Reproduction and development of two psolid sea cucumbers in waters of the San Juan Archipelago, Washington, were studied from April 1981 through August 1984. Spawning inPsolus chitonoides Clark andPsolidium bullatum Ohshima in the laboratory and in the field waters of the San Juan Archipelago, Washington, occurred from February through may, with heaviest spawning in April and May. The egg ofPsolus chitonoides was bright red in color and 627µm in diameter;Psolidium bullatum released eggs that were golden yellow in color and 330µm in diameter. Maximum measured fecundities (spawned eggs) forPsolus chitonoides andPsolidium bullatum were 34 700 and 3 074, respectively. Developmental schedules were similar in both species. Early cleavages were equal, radial, and holoblastic; slightly subequal cleavage was common inPsolus chitonoides. The gastrula elongated to form a uniformly ciliated larva and the vestibule first appeared as a ventral crescent-shaped depression, after which the larva decreased in length and formed three posterior ridges that encircled the early doliolaria. Just prior to settlement, there was loss of cilia between the three ridges and on the posterior end of the early doliolaria, leaving three ciliary rings that are characteristic of the dendrochirote doliolaria larva. Vertical swimming ensued, and five primary tentacles protruded through the vestibule, with occasional attachment to the substratum using the primary tentacles. Upon settlement, two primary podia emerged and all external ciliation was lost except among tentacular papillae and on the end of tube feet. Timing of appearance and of loss of ciliary rings suggest that the rings function in vertical swimming and substratum selection behaviors. Metamorphosis involved the following simultaneous events: (1) resorption of the preoral lobe, (2) formation of large, dorsal, calcareous ossicles, (3) flattening of the trivium, and (4) proliferation of ventral tube feet on Ambulacral Radii B and E to form the sole. Reproduction in the family Psolidae is reviewed. The large proportion of brooders in this family appears to be related to small size, the possession of protective armor and sole, and geographic distribution (mainly in Antarctica). Lecithotrophic doliolaria larvae with three ciliary rings are produced by large northern psolids.  相似文献

Regional variation in the duration of the planktonic larval phase of three species of reef fishes, Thalassoma lucasanum (Labridae), Stegastes flavilatus, and Microspathodon dorsalis (Pomacentridae) was investigated between 1982 and 1991 at several sites in the tropical eastern Pacific over a distance of 3500 km, encompassing virtually their entire range of distribution. Durations of the larval phase, determined from counts of daily otolith increments, were significantly different (1.3 to 1.6 x) between sites. Populations of all three species had a consistently shorter larval life at the most northern site, Cabo San Lucas (Mexico) compared to Panamá and the offshore islands of Galápagos and Cocos. Analyses of otolith increment width over the precompetent period revealed that this disparity in larval duration primarily reflected differences in larval growth rates: faster growing fish spent less time in the plankton. In T. lucasanum, some of the variation in larval duration between Panamá and offshore sites (Galápagos Islands and Cocos Island) may be accounted for by a higher frequency of individuals delaying metamorphosis at the offshore sites. These data indicate that conditions in the planktonic environment are not homogeneous throughout the tropical eastern Pacific and may have a profound effect on aspects of the larval ecology of reef fishes in this region.  相似文献
