The amount of extruded polystyrene (XPS) waste has increased in recent years due to the increase of its use in the thermal insulation of buildings, transport vehicles, and refrigerators, among others. Dissolution with suitable solvents to achieve a volume reduction of more than 100 times without degradation of polymer chains is one of the cheapest and most efficient methods of recycling XPS. Several environmentally friendly solvents have been tested as dissolution agents for XPS volume reduction; the action of these solvents does not produce any degradation of polymer chains. The solubility of the polymer in such solvents at different temperatures was investigated. The solvent can be easily recycled by distillation, obtaining a high-quality recycled polymer. Dissolution with suitable solvents is one of the cheapest and more efficient processes for polystyrene waste management. In this work the solubility of polystyrene foams in several solvents benzene, toluene, xylene, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, 1,3-butanediol, 2-butanol, linalool, geraniol, d-limonene, p-cymene, terpinene, phellandrene, terpineol, menthol, eucalyptol, cinnamaldheyde, nitrobenzene, N,N-dimethylformamide and water has been determined.Experimental results have shown that to develop a “green process” the constituents of essential oils, d-limonene, p-cymene, terpinene, phellandrene, are the most appropriate solvents. The action of these solvent does not produce any degradation of polymer chains. The solubility of the polymer in the mentioned solvents at different temperatures has been investigated. Bioremediation of chlorinated solvents has been moving from an innovative to mainstream technology for environmental applications. Cometablism of chlorinated solvents by monooxygenase has been demonstrated for trichloroethylene (TCE). Cl‐out microbes combine the dehalogenation of PCE with the monooxygenase destruction of TCE to complete the PCE breakdown pathway. Underthe right conditions, cometabolic bioremediation can be cost effective, fast, and complete. Aerobic bioremediation can augment mass transfer technologies such as pump and treat or sparging/vapor extraction to improve their efficiency.  相似文献

The recycling of used, post-industrial and post-consumer PLA is crucial to reduce both the consumption of renewable resources for the monomer synthesis and the environmental impact related to its production and disposal. Several processes are actually available: among these, there is a particular interest on the chemical recycling of PLA with production of its monomer. The aim of this work is to analyse the PLA dissolution behaviour in different organic solvents (acetone and Ethyl lactate) at different water concentrations in order to optimize the chemical depolymerisation process of PLA. New experimental data are presented and a kinetic model is provided for a first analysis. Preliminary results suggest that acetone based solvents (i.e., acetone water mixtures at various concentrations) are more effective to solubilize the PLA rather than the Ethyl-lactate based solvent. Anyway, an increase of water concentration in the solvent phase, determines both a reduction of the solvent power and a reduction of mass transport coefficient for the two solvents tested.  相似文献

Currently, waste photoresist stripper from the semiconductor industries is generally incinerated at high temperatures or processed as a high-calorie fuel, which can have adverse effects on the environment and economy. Recovery of valuable solvents from waste photoresist strippers is, therefore, very important for thin flat transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) manufactures to reduce the production costs and protect the environment against industrial waste. In the present work, systematic laboratory-scale distillation experiments were carried out to regenerate the organic solvents from the waste photoresist stripper and determine if they are feasible to recycle for commercial TFT-LCD grade chemicals: in particular, 1-hydroxyethylpiperazine and methyl diglycol were mainly tried to retrieve. Based on the experiment results, possible alternative distillation sequences were examined through intensive techno-economic analysis using a rigorous process simulator. As a result, an optimal distillation sequence and condition were drawn to separate valuable organic solvents from waste photoresist stripper for a commercial purpose recovery process.  相似文献

In June 2001, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) installed a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) within a roadway in Needham, Massachusetts, to treat a plume of chlorinated solvents migrating toward two public water‐supply wells located in the adjacent town of Wellesley, Massachusetts. The solvents originated from an electronics manufacturer located approximately 2,300 feet upgradient of the roadway and 5,200 feet upgradient of the public supply wells. Chlorinated solvents, primarily trichloroethene (TCE), had migrated past the roadway to within 300 feet of the public supply wells. Two contaminant transport models prepared by the DEP's design contractor and the EPA indicated that the plume would reach the well field if no response actions were taken. To mitigate the future impact to the municipal well field, the DEP decided to install a PRB composed of zero‐valent granular iron across the path of the plume along Central Avenue in Needham. Though several dozen PRBs have been installed at sites worldwide and the technology is no longer considered innovative, the application of the technology in a roadway that receives 17,000 vehicles per day within a residential neighborhood is unique and presented difficulties not typically associated with PRB installations. The Needham PRB was also one of the first zero‐valent iron PRBs installed using the slurry trench method to treat chlorinated compounds. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Isotope applications are gaining acceptance for use in surface water and groundwater investigations, complementing traditional geochemistry and physical hydrology techniques. Recent developments in analytical methodologies and in the understanding of isotope dynamics now allow the use of isotopes to investigate sources and fate of common groundwater contaminants such as chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons. Contaminants with unique isotopic signatures may facilitate the determination of contaminant sources in complex plumes. Degradation of chlorinated solvents and some petroleum hydrocarbons impart unique isotopic signatures on both the original contaminant and the degradation product or products that provide verification of degradation. Use of a Rayleigh‐type model may allow determination of degradation extent. Coupled with models of contaminant fate and transport, degradation extent may be useful for determining degradation rates. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were chemically cross-linked with/without different cross-linkers such as glutaraldehyde and epichlorohydrin, in the presence of a catalyst, or activator (potassium hydroxide) to produce three types of hydrogels. The structures of PVA and the prepared gel types were determined by FTIR spectroscopy, the mechanical and thermal properties, of these hydrogels were examined. The effects of different pH values and temperatures on the swelling properties of the prepared gels were examined. From the obtained results, it was found that, the low concentration of the cross-linker produced hydrogel with moderate properties, but in absence of the cross-linker, the obtained hydrogel exhibited good properties and can be used as friendly environmentally moisture absorbents from the organic solvents. The insolubility and swelling properties of gels were tested in these solvents. The results indicated that these hydrogels can be used as moisture absorbents and solvent dryers.  相似文献

Only limited data are available on the diffusion of volatile organic solvents through flexible membrane liners (FMLs) used for lining impoundments and landfills. To expand this database, a rapid, inexpensive method is needed to measure the diffusion coefficients of volatile organic solvents through FML materials. An absorption method has been developed to determine the diffusion coefficients of volatile organic solvents through FML materials. The method is based on the depletion of an organic compound from an aqueous solution due to absorption by a submerged sample of FML. A numerical solution of Fick's second law of diffusion was used to develop a graph which can be used to determine the diffusion coefficient from the time dependent concentration data. The diffusion coefficients obtained from the absorption tests were validated by comparing them with coefficients determined using a two chamber diffusion cell. The diffusion coefficients determined for toluene and xylene in high density polyethylene (HDPE) were 5.1 × 10−9 cm2s−1 and 1.0 × 10−9 cm2s−1 by the two methods, respectively. The data indicate that the coefficient of distribution (Kd) between the FML and the organic solution, a value which is needed to calculate the diffusion coefficient from the data, can be estimated from the log of the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow), a commonly measured and reported value for many chemicals.  相似文献

Field‐scale pilot tests were performed to evaluate enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) of dissolved chlorinated solvents at a former manufacturing facility located in western North Carolina (the site). Results of the site assessment indicated the presence of two separate chlorinated solvent–contaminated groundwater plumes, located in the northern and southern portions of the site. The key chlorinated solvents found at the site include 1,1,2,2‐tetrachloroethane, trichloroethene, and chloroform. A special form of EHC® manufactured by Adventus Americas was used as an electron donor at this site. In this case, EHC is a pH‐buffering electron donor containing controlled release carbon and ZV Iron MicroSphere 200, a micronscale zero‐valent iron (ZVI) manufactured by BASF. Approximately 3,000 pounds of EHC were injected in two Geoprobe® boreholes in the saprolite zone (southern plume), and 3,500 pounds of EHC were injected at two locations in the partially weathered rock (PWR) zone (northern plume) using hydraulic fracturing techniques. Strong reducing conditions were established immediately after the EHC injection in nearby monitoring wells likely due to the reducing effects of ZV Microsphere 200. After approximately 26 months, the key chlorinated VOCs were reduced over 98 percent in one PWR well. Similarly, the key chlorinated solvent concentrations in the saprolite monitoring wells decreased 86 to 99 percent after initial increases in concentrations of the parent chlorinated solvents. The total organic carbon and metabolic acid concentrations indicated that the electron donor lasted over 26 months after injection in the saprolite aquifer. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Ionic liquids (IL)s have been recognized as ‘green’ alternatives to the organic solvents in a range of synthesis, catalysis and electrochemistry due to their unique chemical and physical properties. In this investigation, a series of organosoluble, thermally stable and optically active hydroxyl-containing poly(amide–imide)s (PAI)s were prepared via polycondensation reaction of an aromatic diamine, 3,5-diamino-N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzamide (4), and different chiral amino acid-based diacids (3a–3e) in the presence of molten tetrabutylammonium bromide as a molten IL and triphenyl phosphite under classical heating method. This process is safe and green since toxic and volatile organic solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and N,N′-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) were eliminated. The resulting new polymers were obtained in good yields with inherent viscosities ranging between 0.23 and 0.54 dL g?1 and were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, specific rotation, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and in some cases by 1H-NMR techniques. The FE-SEM micrographs and XRD showed that the synthesized PAIs were nanostructured and amorphous polymers. The effect of ultrasonic irradiation on the size of polymer particles was also investigated and the results showed that the size of polymer nanoparticles after ultrasonication became smaller than the size of them, before ultrasonic radiation. All of the polymers were readily soluble in many organic solvents such as N,N′-dimethyl sulfoxide, DMAc and NMP.  相似文献

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been accepted as ‘green’ alternatives to the organic solvents in a range of synthesis, catalysis and electrochemistry, because of their distinctive chemical and physical properties. In this investigation, N,N′-(pyromellitoyl)-bis-l-tyrosine dimethyl ester as a chiral bioactive diphenolic monomer was prepared in three steps. The polycondensation of this monomer with various aromatic and aliphatic diisocyanates such as 4,4′-methylene-bis-(4-phenylisocyanate) (6a), toluylene-2,4-diisocyanate (6b), isophorone diisocyanate (6c) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (6d) were carried out in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide as a molten IL under microwave irradiation conditions and was compared with polymerization in traditional solvent like N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The results show that IL efficiently absorbs microwave energy, thus leading to a very high heating rate. Thus IL method is safe and green since toxic and volatile organic solvents were eliminated. All of the novel poly(urethane-imides) (PUIs) showed good solubility in various organic solvents. The obtained new polymers were characterized with FT-IR, 1H-NMR, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of two representative PUIs demonstrated that they are rather thermally stable. In vitro toxicity studies showed that the synthetic materials are biologically active and they are nontoxic to microbial growth then could be classified as bioactive and biodegradable compounds.  相似文献

1,4‐Dioxane, a common co‐contaminant with chlorinated solvents, is present in groundwater at Site 24 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Historical use of chlorinated solvents resulted in concentrations of 1,4‐dioxane in groundwater up to approximately 2,000 μg/L. Starting in 2013, an in situ propane biosparge system operation demonstrated reductions in 1,4‐dioxane concentrations in groundwater. The work detailed herein extends the efforts of the first field demonstration to a second phase and confirms the biodegradation mechanism via use of stable isotope probing (SIP). After two months of operation, 1,4‐dioxane concentrations decreased approximately 45 to 83 percent at monitoring locations in the test area. The results of the SIP confirmed 13C‐enriched 1,4‐dioxane was transformed into dissolved inorganic carbon (suggesting mineralization to carbon dioxide) and incorporated into microbial biomass (likely attributed to metabolic uptake of biotransformation intermediates or of carbon dioxide).  ©2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A method of analyzing soil vapor extraction (SVE) laboratory data using a sample of contaminated soil is presented to allow the calculation of equilibrium constants for an assumed gas/soil equilibrium expression. The constants can be determined for any compound measured in the exit gas. A Freundlich equilibrium expression was shown to represent the equilibrium in a soil contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) and several aromatic solvents.  相似文献
