This study describes spatial and temporal patterns of variability in population parameters in the barnacle Chthamalus montagui Southward in three localities of northern Spain and evaluates whether density-dependent settlement may regulate population dynamics. The sampling design considered two spatial scales, localities and sites within localities, and two temporal scales, years and six month intervals. Density, amount of free space, mortality, growth rate and magnitude of settlement (both absolute and per unit of free space) were obtained from photographs of permanent quadrats and from direct counts in the field. The number of settlers in scraped and untouched quadrats was used to estimate the importance of the presence of conspecifics in settlement. Significant variation at the two spatial and temporal scales was found for most parameters. Large spatial and temporal variations in adult mortality rate, density, and settlement were observed. Patterns of mortality were not consistent with differences in density among localities. Differences in settlement among localities were maintained through time. We suggest that magnitude of settlement is regulated by persistent features such as topography or local water circulation. We assume that early post-settlement mortality does not differ among localities. In the absence of differential mortality, settlement determines average population density within localities. Within localities, settlement was independent of density and free space. No consistent evidence was found on preferential settlement at the vicinity of conspecifics. The main conclusion is that density-dependent settlement is not relevant for the regulation of the populations of C. montagui in the northern Spain. Regulation might occur by density-dependent processes within the adult fraction of the population and/or the larval phase before settlement.  相似文献

I examined whether patterns of settlement of planktonic juveniles determined the size and composition of adult populations of three Caribbean surgeonfishes (A canthurus bahianus, A. chirurgus and A. coeruleus) on six isolated patch-reefs in Panamá. I monitored settlement monthly on six reefs (0.14 to 0.67 ha) for 8 yr (1978–1986), and censused adults on those reefs annually. Year-to-year fluctuations in the absolute and relative abundances of settlers arriving on each reef were not extreme. Densities of adults in 1986 were not correlated with the densities of settlers that arrived between 1979 and 1984. Survival of settlers, although apparently unrelated to the density of adults, was negatively related to the density of settlers per unit of adult habitat (but not per unit of settlement habitat) for each species. Changes in adult populations of each species between 1978 and 1986 were not correlated with the abundance of settlers relative to the initial number of adults. The relative abundances of adults of each species in 1986 did not reflect the relative abundances of settlers (1979–1984); these abundances were due to both spatial variation and interspecific variation in survival. In some cases, relocation of adults between isolated patch-reefs (as much as 100 m from other reefs) substantially altered the size and composition of surgeonfish populations. Thus, either post-settlement mortality or relocation overrode effects of settlement patterns in determining adult abundances on the six reefs. Relocation is important in organizing reef-fish communities and must be further examined, particularly in large habitat mosaics.  相似文献

In demersal fish species with a pelagic larval stage, settlement patterns may be a consequence of variations in larval supply, habitat selection at settlement, and processes acting between the time of settlement and the time of benthic sampling. This study describes temporal (1994-1998) and spatial variation in plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) settlement densities in four semi-isolated nursery areas with similar habitat characteristics, in the non-tidal Gullmarsfjord on the west coast of Sweden. Juvenile abundance varied by a factor of ten, both among years and among nursery grounds. For the 3 years when larval sampling was undertaken (1994-1996) and all nursery areas, there was a significant positive relationship between larval supply and juvenile abundance (linear regression: r2=0.45, n=24, P<0.001). On the southern side of the fjord, a significant positive relationship between larval and juvenile abundance was found in one area (r2=0.62, n=6, P<0.05). The absolute mortality rate of plaice after settlement was related to the initial settlement density (r2=0.95, n=20, P<0.001), and to the abundance of predatory shrimps Crangon crangon (r2=0.44, n=20, P<0.01). Plaice otoliths were found in 6% of the shrimp stomachs analysed from an area with high density (13.3 m-2) of newly settled plaice. The present study suggests that the density of juvenile plaice was limited by larval supply to the nursery grounds. Consistency in the relative abundance of juveniles among nursery grounds between years also suggested that some nursery areas may be in the settlement shadow of others. The irregular nature of the coastline in combination with larval depletion could thereby cause small-scale (103-104 m) variation in settlement densities of the same order of magnitude as the inter-annual variability in recruitment to individual nursery grounds.  相似文献

Larvae of marine organisms often need specific resources or environments at settlement, and their success at settlement might be strongly influenced by the abundance and distribution of such specific resources. The larvae of hermit crabs need small shells to settle, so it is thought that the distribution and abundance of small shells influence the settlement pattern of hermit crabs. To investigate the influence of small shell distribution on the settlement of pagurid hermit crab larvae, we conducted a field experiment at an intertidal rocky shore in Hakodate Bay, Japan. From the line-transect sampling in the field, we found that Pagurus middendorffii settled extensively in the offshore side of the intertidal zone while P. nigrofascia settled in the uppermost area of the intertidal zone. Small shells were most abundant in a narrow shallow trough, slightly offshore from the uppermost area of the intertidal zone. For both species, settler abundance was high where adults were abundant, but settler abundance did not appear to be related to shells abundance. An experiment to clarify settlement patterns showed that larval recruits tended to be similar to those in the line-transect sampling of settlers. Thus shells may not be a primary factor affecting settlement patterns at relatively large scale within the intertidal flat. However, when we analyzed the relationship of settlers and shells separately within each transect, the distribution of settlers was well explained by shell resource availability. Therefore on a smaller scale, shell availability may influence the number of settlers. Settlement periods of P. middendorffii and P. nigrofascia fully overlapped, so their larvae probably were affected by similar transport factors, such as current and tidal movement. Unpredictable inter-annual variations in the timing, spatial extent and intensity of the sardine run (Sardinops sagax) have been documented in recent years along the coastline of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This study aimed to determine whether variations in the availability of sardine were reflected in the diet and condition of common dolphins (Delphinus capensis) over the past three decades. Stomach contents from 95 common dolphins incidentally caught between 2000 and 2009 were analysed and compared to historical data collected between 1972 and 1992. A shift in the principal prey species consumed by the dolphins was observed over the past 30 years. Prior to 1992, sardine comprised up to 49 % of the total stomach contents by mass, whilst chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) was the dominant prey recorded in the stomach contents between 2000 and 2009 (66 %). As common dolphins prey on locally abundant fish species, this dietary shift may indicate changes in the availability of the most abundant fish prey. Stable isotope analyses of tooth tissue revealed no significant changes in the δ15N and δ13C isotopic ratios over the past three decades (P = 0.283 for N and P = 0.922 for C). Blubber thickness as a percentage of body length and blubber weight as a percentage of total body weight were assessed as indicators of animal condition. No significant changes in proportional blubber weight or blubber thickness were seen over the last 40 years (1970–2009) for all age cohorts. This species appears to be well adapted to cope with changes in prey species availability, without impacting on body condition.  相似文献

Although the frequency and magnitude of sedimentation often varies across coastal landscapes creating patches with different mean sediment loads, duration of sedimentation and rates of sediment resuspension, few studies have documented the emergent effects of spatio-temporal variability in sedimentation. Here, we conducted two laboratory experiments to evaluate such effects on the establishment of Macrocystis pyrifera and Undaria pinnatifida spores. In the first experiment, spore establishment was significantly affected by sediment load (the effective dose required for a 40 % reduction in establishment ranged between 16 and 60 mg sediment l?1) and sediment regime (relative sedimentation occurring before spore settlement, ~3 times more sediment was required for 20 % reduction in spore establishment when sedimentation occurred after spore settlement). The second experiment demonstrated that the effects of sediment depended on sediment load (spore establishment was 2–4 times greater when sediment load was 200 mg l?1 relative to 400 mg l?1), variability in sedimentation (spore establishment was 1.36 times greater with variable than fixed sediment loads), repeated pulses of sedimentation (pulsed sedimentation decreased spore establishment by 59–91 % relative to a single sedimentation event) and timing of sedimentation relative to spore settlement (sedimentation before spore settlement decreased establishment by 51–95 % relative to sedimentation after spore settlement). These results have important implications for ecologists and resource managers attempting to predict the consequences of sedimentation, suggesting that it is not only important to consider sediment load, but also fine-scale temporal variability in sedimentation relative to key life-history events of the impacted organisms.  相似文献

Studies over time provide opportunities to detect variations in the spatial and temporal patterns of clonal organisms and measure changes on their population dynamics related to extreme events. We assessed population dynamics for a bryozoan species dominating a subtidal rocky reef at Tino Island, in the eastern Ligurian Sea (NW Mediterranean). Using 9 years of annual photosurveys (1997–2005), rapid decline in Pentapora fascialis colony cover was shown at 11 and 22 m depths following the anomalous warming events in 1999 and 2003. An 86 % reduction in live colony portion was found after the 1999 warming event (2.3 °C higher than normal), with larger colonies being most affected. Effects from the 2003 event were delayed, and gradual cover decline occurred during the following 2 years. At the “Shallow” photostations, none of the larger colonies (>1,000 cm2) survived after the first cover decline. Availability of new substrate after the 1999 disturbance resulted in enhanced recovery through new colony production. At the “Deep” photostations, the population structure did not change over the duration of the monitoring period showing the same monomodal structure and same dominant size class (50–500 cm²). In the 4 years following the first cover decline, the deeper population regained colony cover to levels similar to pre-disturbance level, showing a good resilience. This 9-year monitoring analysis provided the temporal resolution needed to detect changes occurring in the P. fascialis population and will contribute to the assessment of long-term changes on benthic populations suffering during recent decades from dramatic increases in extreme events.  相似文献

Tetraclita squamosa and Tetraclita japonica are common, intertidal barnacles. In Hong Kong, the population dynamics of the two species exhibited spatial and temporal variation on two semi-exposed shores. T. squamosa produced egg masses from May–June and annual settlement and recruitment occurred from June–July. In contrast, settlement and recruitment of T. japonica was sparse from March–May, but intensified in July–October. Mature gonads and egg masses were, however, only present from September–November, suggesting the larvae from the two settlement pulses originated from other locations as well as Hong Kong populations. Settlement intensity and post-recruitment mortality of the two species varied between sites, possibly due to spatial variation in free rock space, physical transport of larvae and abundance of food in the water column.Communicated by T. We examined the relationships between daily pattern of settlement and environmental parameters during two consecutive years in two littoral fishes, Lipophrys trigloides (Blenniidae) and Chromis chromis (Pomacentridae), in the NW Mediterranean Sea. We also used individual early-life traits (pelagic larval duration, size at hatching and size at settlement) calculated from otoliths, to study the proximate causes of settlement variability and size-selective mortality after settlement. Several early-life characteristics of L. trigloides (planktonic larval duration and size at hatching), and environmental variables averaged during the whole planktonic period (e.g. water temperature, wave height, solar radiation) were related with the magnitude of settlement. In contrast, C. chromis showed no significant relationships between early-life traits and the magnitude of settlement, and a weak relationship between settlement magnitude and environmental variables. Furthermore, juvenile survivors showed larger size at hatching than settlers, indicating that size at hatching affected the juvenile survival of the two species. These results suggest that survival was linked largely to conditions at hatching for both species.  相似文献

The Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi), an abundant coral-reef-associated apex predator, is one of the most economically and ecologically important, yet least studied species of large shark in the greater Caribbean region. The relative abundance and population structure of C. perezi off Cape Eleuthera, The Bahamas, was surveyed by standardised longline surveys from May 2008 to October 2011, which resulted in the capture of 331 sharks. Abundance peaked in the summer and was lowest during the winter. Females were 1.6 times more abundant than males and the assemblage was dominated by immature female sharks (45.5 %). The abundance of mature male and female sharks peaked a month apart in June and August, respectively. All 331 sharks were tagged and released with 15.4 % being recaptured after periods at liberty between 5 and 1,159 days (Mean = 333.4 ± 42.7 SE). The mean distance between tagging and recapture was 1.77 km for recaptures in excess of 6 months, indicating seasonally stratified philopatry in this species. C. perezi inhabiting Bahamian waters have developed complex habitat use patterns that are both spatiotemporally and demographically segregated, most probably in response to the large and diverse habitat mosaic available on the Bahamas Banks compared to contemporary study sites. This study represents an important step in understanding the spatiotemporal population structure of C. perezi and illustrates the potential for studies examining behavioural plasticity in response to environmental variation and anthropogenic disturbance.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variability in zooplankton was studied at eight stations located in the Lesina Lagoon (South Adriatic Sea) Salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll a (in the lagoon) at these stations were also assessed. The zooplankton community was characterised by clear seasonal oscillations and mostly represented by copepods and their larvae. The dominant copepod species were Calanipeda aquaedulcis and Acartia tonsa, which exhibited spatial–temporal segregation in the lagoon. C. aquaedulcis copepodites seemed to be better adapted to oligotrophic and oligohaline conditions compared with the A. tonsa population. The invasive species A. tonsa has completely replaced the formerly abundant Acartia margalefi. A positive correlation was found between abundances, total species numbers and trophic state. An increasing abundance trend was shown from the lagoon towards the sea. The highest diversity indices were recorded at the two channel inlets, during high tide due to the absence of a clear dominance of one or more coastal species and the co-occurrence of species of lagoon and marine origin.  相似文献

Edge effects are a dominant subject in landscape ecology literature, yet they are highly variable and poorly understood. Often, the literature suggests simple models for edge effects-positive (enhancement at the edge), negative (enhancement at the interior), or no effect (neutral)--on a variety of metrics, including abundance, diversity, and mortality. In the marine realm, much of this work has focused on fragmented seagrass habitats due to their importance for a variety of commercially important species. In this study, the settlement, recruitment, and survival of bay scallops was investigated across a variety of seagrass patch treatments. By simultaneously collecting settlers (those viable larvae available to settle and metamorphose) and recruits (those settlers that survive some period of time, in this case, 6 weeks) on the same collectors, we were able to demonstrate a "balance" between positive and negative edge effects, resulting in a net neutral effect. Scallop settlement was significantly enhanced along seagrass edges, regardless of patch type while survival was elevated within patch interiors. However, recruitment (the net result of settlement and post-settlement loss) did not vary significantly from edge to center, representing a neutral effect. Further, results suggest that post-settlement loss, most likely due to predation, appears to be the dominant mechanism structuring scallop abundance, not patterns in settlement. These data illustrate the complexity of edge effects, and suggest that the metric used to investigate the effect (be it abundance, survival, or other metrics) can often influence the magnitude and direction of the perceived effect. Traditionally, high predation along a habitat edge would have indicated an "ecological trap" for the species in question; however, this study demonstrates that, at the population level, an ecological trap may not exist.  相似文献

Larval settlement of the infaunal spionid polychaetes Polydora cornuta and Streblospio benedicti is mediated by sediment-associated microorganisms. To investigate if larval preference for certain sediment is guided by individual sediment-associated bacteria, 13 bacterial isolates (5 phyla) obtained from the natural habitat of adult polychaetes (Wadden Sea, Germany) in 2008 were screened in still-water, no-choice settlement assays. Two isolates (α-Proteobacterium-Strain DF11 and Flavobacterium-Strain 54) significantly triggered larval settlement in comparison with sterile sediment. In still-water, multiple-choice settlement assays comprising natural and sterile sediment and sediment re-inoculated with isolates DF11 and 54, significant preferences for natural sediment and sediment containing bacterial isolates at 108 cells g?1 were observed. Larval settlement was influenced by bacterial abundance in sediment but the correlation was not strictly positive; thus, maximum larval settlement in response to single bacterial species may occur at certain optimum densities. Non-viable or suspended bacteria and water-soluble bacterial products did not induce larval settlement, suggesting that sediment-associated bacterial settlement cues for P. cornuta and S. benedicti were either produced in situ and/or consisted of heat-labile bacterial products.  相似文献

Thermal environment is often regarded as a key determinant of distribution limits in marine invertebrates and hence may represent one of the most important barriers to invasion by non-indigenous species. For the first time in the subarctic northwestern Atlantic, we investigated variation in the timing and magnitude of settlement, recruitment, and colony cover of the recently (early 2000s) introduced bryozoan Membranipora membranacea on the kelp Saccharina longicruris and how this variation relates to changes in sea temperature (thermal histories) across eight sites spanning a 450-km latitudinal range between southwestern Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador, Canada. We show that (1) up to 61 % of the variation in settlement, recruitment, and colony cover was explained by sea temperature alone, with highest and lowest abundances at warmest and coldest sites, respectively; (2) between-site differences in rates of sea cooling explained 85 % of the variation in settler abundance; (3) varying the temporal window over which data were aggregated increased the explanatory power of sea temperature to as much as 98 % for settlement and recruitment, and 86 % for colony cover; (4) exposure to waves and surface area of colonies improved relationships between sea temperature and settlement and recruitment by up to 11 %; and (5) recruit abundance was a strong predictor of colony cover, explaining as much as 89 % of the variation. Consistently low abundances of settlers and recruits at the northern tip of Newfoundland and southern tip of Labrador suggest that M. membranacea is nearing its northern distribution limit in the northwestern Atlantic. Our findings extend knowledge of population dynamics of M. membranacea in the northwestern Atlantic, while highlighting the complexity of the interactions between physical and biological factors and processes that affect population dynamics in invertebrates with planktonic larvae in predominantly cold marine habitats.  相似文献

The importance life history plays in understanding population dynamics and the functional roles of species for predicting climate change scenarios are well established. Yet, in the marine environment, the complete life history is unknown for many species, especially the link between morphologically and ecologically distinct planktonic larvae, and their corresponding benthic adult forms. Integration of meroplankton abundance, benthic adult species, larval morphology, and molecular data was employed to unravel the complete life history of Polygordius, a dominant polychaete in sandy shelf sediments of the Mid-Atlantic Bight. Polygordius species are unusual, having two distinct planktonic larval forms: an exolarva and an endolarva. Extensive sampling in the southern Mid-Atlantic Bight with careful preservation of meroplankton (2006–2007) revealed the identity of multiple stages of exo- and endolarvae, and their spatial, seasonal, and vertical distribution. Molecular and morphological evidence indicated exolarvae are Polygordius jouinae and endolarva are an undescribed species. Structure and development of these larvae differed greatly. P. jouinae exolarvae were found off Delaware Bay to North Carolina. At some stations, they were abundant, with densities up to 4,013 m?3, comprising >90 % of the total meroplankton. Exolarvae spent up to a month in the plankton starting in March/May depending on year, settlement began in July when larvae were at least 2 mm in length, and by October were no longer observed in the plankton. These findings are consistent with the distribution patterns and life cycle known for adults. This is the first report of endolarvae north of Cape Hatteras.  相似文献

Macroalgal fields are a feature of the shallow tropical benthos, yet their importance for coral reef fish population dynamics remains poorly understood. The abundance of fish recruits was recorded using underwater visual census at six macroalgal and 11 coral reef sites in the Montebello and Barrow Islands. Surveys identified 6,935 individual recruit fish from 105 species, 54 genera and 20 families. Of these, 1,401 recruits from 48 species, 31 genera and 14 families were observed in macroalgal sites. Sixteen of the 105 recruit species (15.2 %) were observed exclusively at macroalgal sites. Forty-two (87.5 %) of these species have been observed as adults on adjacent coral reefs. Species composition of fish recruits differed significantly between the two habitats. Corallivore, small omnivore and zooplanktivore recruits had significantly higher numbers in the coral sites, while the results clearly demonstrate that juveniles, within the genera Lethrinus and Choerodon, as well as large algal croppers, are predominantly found at macroalgal (74–100 %) rather than coral-dominated sites. High-canopy macroalgae cover was positively correlated with abundance of these taxa, particularly Lethrinids (r 2 = 0.40). This study is the first to highlight the important attributes of tropical macroalgal fields and suggests that they have a similar role to seagrass meadows as essential juvenile habitat, thus warranting greater attention in conservation planning and ecological studies.  相似文献

Recruitment of a group of co-occurring sessile invertebrates (a serpulid polychaete, an oyster, a bryozoan, and several colonial and one solitary ascidian) that encrust floating docks in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was studied in August 1985. Daily photographs were taken of acrylic settling plates over a 14 d period, and daily settlement and juvenile mortality were measured. Settlement rates were compared between species and days, while juvenile mortalities were compared between species, days, juvenile ages and densities of juveniles on the plates. Species differed in abundance of both settlers and juveniles, and in rate and pattern of juvenile mortality. Settlement intensity varied between days for some species. Significant juvenile mortality occurred during the 14 d for most species; it appeared to be caused by fish predation. For two species, mortality varied with juvenile age, with older individuals suffering higher mortality. Mortality was density-dependent for some species, increasing with numbers of juveniles on the plates. Mortality patterns varied even within the colonial species. Assessing larval settlement and juvenile mortality for a single species or type of organism in a community thus may not indicate that similar patterns exist for co-occurring species.  相似文献

Many marine organisms have pelagic larval stages that settle into benthic habitats occupied by older individuals; however, a mechanistic understanding of intercohort interactions remains elusive for most species. Patterns of spatial covariation in the densities of juvenile and adult age classes of a small temperate reef fish, the common triplefin (Forsterygion lapillum), were evaluated during the recruitment season (Feb–Mar, 2011) in Wellington, New Zealand (41°17′S, 174°46′E). The relationship between juvenile and adult density among sites was best approximated by a dome-shaped curve, with a negative correlation between densities of juveniles and adults at higher adult densities. The curve shape was temporally variable, but was unaffected by settlement habitat type (algal species). A laboratory experiment using a “multiple-predator effects” design tested the hypothesis that increased settler mortality in the presence of adults (via enhanced predation risk or cannibalism) contributed to the observed negative relationship between juveniles and adults. Settler mortality did not differ between controls and treatments that contained either one (p = 0.08) or two (p = 0.09) adults. However, post hoc analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between the mean length of juveniles used in experimental trials and survival of juveniles in these treatments, suggesting that smaller juveniles may be vulnerable to cannibalism. There was no evidence for risk enhancement or predator interference when adults were present alongside a heterospecific predator (F. varium). These results highlight the complex nature of intercohort relationships in shaping recruitment patterns and add to the growing body of literature recognizing the importance of age class interactions.  相似文献

Populations near the geographic distribution limits of the species are considered to live under suboptimal conditions, and hence, slight environmental changes can be critical for their survival. The potential sensitivity to disturbances of the long-living macroalga Ascophyllum nodosum was analyzed by the determination of growth, recruitment, mortality, and production of biomass of a population near its southern distribution limit. Recruitment, survival and growth rates of <2 years old individuals were determined in a new population growing in experimentally denudated squares. Demographic data for >2 years old individuals were obtained from individuals in the original population after estimating their age from the number of gas bladders in the thallus. Growth and survival were described as continuous nonlinear functions of age applied to the population and were further used to make demography-based production estimates. Recruitment of A. nodosum in denudated substrates seemed to require a previous cover of other macroalgae (as Fucus vesiculosus) as the only cohort detected during the 26-month period of the study was observed after F. vesiculosus individuals started to increase. The low production estimates (2,033 g m?2 for a 10 year period) and poor recruitment may indicate a slow recuperation of this population to denudation. However, the large variability observed in the estimated growth curves of different populations along this southern distribution area suggests a large influence of local conditions that may help to overcome environmental changes at regional scales.  相似文献
