Though several different models have been developed for sub-surface migration, little attention has been given to the effect of subsurface transport on the indoor environment. Existing methods generally assume that a house is one well-mixed compartment. A two-compartment model was developed to better characterize this exposure pathway; the model treats the house as two well-mixed compartments, one for the basement and one for the remainder of the house. A field study was completed to quantify parameters associated with the two-compartment model, such as soil gas intrusion rates and basement to ground floor air exchange rates. Two residential test houses in Paulsboro, New Jersey were selected for this study. All experiments were completed using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas. Soil gas intrusion rates were found to be highly dependent on the soil gas to basement pressure difference, varying from 0.001 m3 m−2 h−1 for a pressure drop of –0.2 Pa to 0.011 m3 m−2 h−1 for a pressure drop of –6.0 Pa. Basement ventilation rates ranged from 0.17 to 0.75 air changes per hour (ACH) for basement to ambient pressure differences ranging from –1.1 to –7.6 Pa (relative to ambient). Application of experimental results in conjunction with the two-compartment model indicate that exposures are highly dependent on gas intrusion rates, basement ventilation rate, and fraction of time spent in the basement. These results can also be significantly different when compared with the simple well-mixed house assumption.  相似文献

The effects of natural compounds on reducing formaldehyde emission from plywood were investigated. Urea, catechin and vanillin were examined as the natural formaldehyde reducers. The microemission cell, with an internal volume of 35 ml, the maximum exposed test surface area of 177 cm2 and an air purge flow rate of 50 ml min−1, was used to measure specific emission rate (SER). In the case of no reducer treatment, formaldehyde emission from plywood was fast and SERs were 4.4 mg m−2 h−1 at 30 °C and 15 mg m−2 h−1 at 60 °C. When this plywood was treated with the natural compounds, the SERs of formaldehyde were decreased at all temperatures. In the case of urea treatment, the SERs of formaldehyde decreased to 0.30 mg m−2 h−1 at 30 °C and 0.65 mg m−2 h−1 at 60 °C. When the urea treatment was applied to the inside of kitchen cabinet (made from plywood; 270 cm wide, 60 cm deep, 250 cm high), the concentration of formaldehyde was reduced substantially from 1600 to 130 μg m−3. The reducing effect of formaldehyde continued during the observation period (6 months), with a mean concentration of 100 μg m−3. Reducers in the plywood would react with released formaldehyde. Application of natural compounds such as urea, catechin and vanillin could provide a simple and effective approach for suppressing formaldehyde emission from plywood.  相似文献

A 3-year research project was established in 1999 to create numerical reference data for material emissions during the time of construction and during the first year. Seven buildings, representing the present construction practice in Finland, were investigated. Material emissions were measured by using the field and laboratory cell (FLEC) during the time of construction, in the newly finished, and in the 6- and 12-month-old buildings. The emission rates for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and ammonia were determined. The highest total VOCs (TVOC) emissions were measured in the newly finished buildings from the ceiling structure and from some of the PVC floor coverings. These emissions were up to 1300–2000 μg m−2 h−1. Individual VOCs with emission rates above 50 μg m−2 h−1 included 2-(2-butoxyethoxy) ethanol and its acetate, C4–C16-substituted alkylbenzenes, and xylenes. The mean TVOC emission decreased at least to the Finnish M1-class level (200 μg m−2 h−1) from all surfaces and in all the buildings in 6–12 months. The ammonia and formaldehyde emissions from the ceiling structure were 20–60 μg m−2 h−1 in the newly finished buildings and the M1-levels (30/50 μg m−2 h−1) were exceeded in some cases. These emissions even increased in some buildings during the follow-up period indicating the difference between emissions measured in the laboratory and on site from real structures. Reference values based on the means and 95th percentile are presented to be utilised in both quality control and while investigating indoor air quality problems which are suspected to be caused by a defect structure.  相似文献

To investigate the characteristics of mercury exchange between soil and air in the heavily air-polluted area, total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentration in air and Hg exchange flux were measured in Wanshan Hg mining area (WMMA) in November, 2002 and July–August, 2004. The results showed that the average TGM concentrations in the ambient air (17.8–1101.8 ng m−3), average Hg emission flux (162–27827 ng m−2 h−1) and average Hg dry deposition flux (0–9434 ng m−2 h−1) in WMMA were 1–4 orders of magnitude higher than those in the background area. It is said that mercury-enriched soil is a significant Hg source of the atmosphere in WMMA. It was also found that widely distributed roasted cinnabar banks are net Hg sources of the atmosphere in WMMA. Relationships between mercury exchange flux and environmental parameters were investigated. The results indicated that the rate of mercury emission from soil could be accelerated by high total soil mercury concentration and solar irradiation. Whereas, highly elevated TGM concentrations in the ambient air can restrain Hg emission from soil and even lead to strongly atmospheric Hg deposition to soil surface. A great amount of gaseous mercury in the heavily polluted atmosphere may cycle between soil and air quickly and locally. Vegetation can inhibit mercury emission from soil and are important sinks of atmospheric mercury in heavily air-polluted area.  相似文献

Estimates of the atmospheric deposition to Galveston Bay of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are made using precipitation and meteorological data that were collected continuously from 2 February 1995 to 6 August 1996 at Seabrook, TX, USA. Particulate and vapor phase PAHs in ambient air and particulate and dissolved phases in rain samples were collected and analyzed. More than 95% of atmospheric PAHs were in the vapor phase and about 73% of PAHs in the rain were in the dissolved phase. Phenanthrene and napthalene were the dominant compounds in air vapor and rain dissolved phases, respectively, while 5 and 6 ring PAH were predominant in the particulate phase of both air and rain samples. Total PAH concentrations ranged from 4 to 161 ng m−3 in air samples and from 50 to 312 ng l−1 in rain samples. Temporal variability in total PAH air concentrations were observed, with lower concentrations in the spring and fall (4–34 ng m −3) compared to the summer and winter (37–161 ng m−3). PAHs in the air near Galveston Bay are derived from both combustion and petroleum vaporization. Gas exchange from the atmosphere to the surface water is estimated to be the major deposition process for PAHs (1211 μg m− 2 yr− 1), relative to wet deposition (130 μg m−2 yr− 1) and dry deposition (99 μg m−2 yr− 1). Annual deposition of PAHs directly to Galveston Bay from the atmosphere is estimated as 2  t yr−1.  相似文献

For over one year, the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC) in Tampa, Florida, operated two dichotomous sequential particulate matter air samplers collocated with a manual Federal Reference Method (FRM) air sampler at a waterfront site on Tampa Bay. The FRM was alternately configured as a PM2.5, then as a PM10 sampler. For the dichotomous sampler measurements, daily 24-h integrated PM2.5 and PM10–2.5 ambient air samples were collected at a total flow rate of 16.7 l min−1. A virtual impactor split the air into flow rates of 1.67 and 15.0 l min−1 onto PM10–2.5 and PM2.5 47-mm diameter PTFE® filters, respectively. Between the two dichotomous air samplers, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 13.3 μg m−3, 0.02% and 5.2% for PM2.5 concentrations (n=282), and 12.3 μg m−3, 3.9% and 7.7% for PM10–2.5 concentrations (n=282). FRM measurements were alternate day 24-h integrated PM2.5 or PM10 ambient air samples collected onto 47-mm diameter PTFE® filters at a flow rate of 16.7 l min−1. Between a dichotomous and a PM2.5 FRM air sampler, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 12.4 μg m−3, −5.6% and 8.2% (n=43); and between a dichotomous and a PM10 FRM air sampler, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 25.7 μg m−3, −4.0% and 5.8% (n=102). The PM2.5 concentration measurement standard errors were 0.95, 0.79 and 1.02 μg m−3; for PM10 the standard errors were 1.06, 1.59, and 1.70 μg m−3 for two dichotomous and one FRM samplers, respectively, which indicate the dichotomous samplers have superior technical merit. These results reveal the potential for the dichotomous sequential air sampler to replace the combination of the PM2.5 and PM10 FRM air samplers, offering the capability of making simultaneous, self-consistent determinations of these particulate matter fractions in a routine ambient monitoring mode.  相似文献

Five weeks of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) and particle bound mercury (Hgp) concentrations as well as fluxes of GEM were measured at Maryhill, Ontario, Canada above a biosolids amended field. The study occurred during the autumn of 2004 (October–November) to capture the effects of cool weather conditions on the behaviour of mercury in the atmosphere. The initial concentration of total mercury (Hg) in the amended soil was relatively low (0.4 μg g−1±10%).A micrometeorological approach was used to infer the flux of GEM using a continuous two-level sampling system with inlets at 0.40 and 1.25 m above the soil surface to measure the GEM concentration gradient. The required turbulent transfer coefficients were derived from meteorological parameters measured on site. The average GEM flux over the study was 0.1±0.2 ng m−2 h−1(±one standard deviation). The highest averaged hourly GEM fluxes occurred when the averaged net radiation was highest, although the slight diurnal patterns observed were not statistically significant for the complete flux data series. GEM emission fluxes responded to various local events including the passage of a cold front when the flux increased to 2 ng m−2 h−1 and during a biosolids application event at an adjacent field when depositional fluxes peaked at −3 ng m−2 h−1. Three substantial rain events during the study kept the surface soil moisture near field capacity and only slightly increased the GEM flux. Average concentrations of RGM (2.3±3.0 pg m−3), Hgp (3.0±6.2 pg m−3) and GEM (1.8±0.2 ng m−3) remained relatively constant throughout the study except when specific local events resulted in elevated concentrations. The application of biosolids to an adjacent field produced large increases in Hgp (25.8 pg m−3) and RGM (21.7 pg m−3) concentrations only when the wind aligned to impact the experimental equipment. Harvest events (corn) in adjacent fields also corresponded to higher concentrations of GEM and Hgp but with no elevated peaks in RGM concentrations. Diurnal patterns were not statistically significant for RGM and Hgp at Maryhill.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to quantify the concentration and emission levels of sulfuric odorous compounds emitted from pig-feeding operations. Five types of pig-housing rooms were studied: gestation, farrowing, nursery, growing and fattening rooms. The concentration range of sulfuric odorous compounds in these pig-housing rooms were 30–200 ppb for hydrogen sulfide (H2S), 2.5–20 ppb for methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), 1.5–12 ppb for dimethyl sulfide (DMS; CH3SCH3) and 0.5–7 ppb for dimethyl disulfide (DMDS; CH3S2CH3), respectively. The emission rates of H2S, CH3SH, DMS and DMDS were estimated by multiplying the average concentration (mg m−3) measured near the air outlet by the mean ventilation rate (m3 h−1) and expressed either per area (mg m−2 h−1) or animal unit (AU; liveweight of the pig, 500 kg) (mg pig−1 h−1). As a result, the emission rates of H2S, CH3SH, DMS and DMDS in the pig-housing rooms were 14–64, 0.8–7.3, 0.4–3.4 and 0.2–1.9 mg m−2 h−1, respectively, based on pig's activity space and 310–723, 18–80, 9–39 and 5–22 mg AU−1 h−1, respectively, based on pig's liveweight, which indicates that their emission rates were similar, whether based upon the pig's activity space or liveweight. In conclusion, the concentrations and emission rates of H2S were highest in the fattening room followed by the growing, nursery, farrowing and gestation rooms whereas those of CH3SH, DMS and DMDS concentrations were largest in the growing room followed by the nursery, gestation and farrowing rooms.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide (CO2) release from manure was investigated under field conditions in one of the compartments in a mechanically ventilated fattening pig house. The potential of CO2 release was tested in the emptied compartment by imposing high ventilation rate and measuring CO2 concentrations in the incoming and exhaust air. When the compartment was filled with pigs, a model of tranquil CO2 exhalation rate (TCER) was used to estimate the part of CO2 produced by animals, in addition to the measurement of CO2 concentrations and ventilation rate. Useful data were extracted from 135 days of continuously measured field data obtained when the housing system was in steady-state. The CO2 release per m2 of pit surface was 18.4 and 25.8 g h−1 m−2 in the emptied pig compartment during the impulse and pulse ventilation rate tests, respectively. It ranged from 1.1 and 116.7 g h−1 m−2 and averaged 42.1 g h−1 m−2 during the 135-day continuous field measurement. In 128 of the 135 days when the compartment was filled with pigs, the mean CO2 release from the manure reached an average of 37.5% of the TCER by pigs, instead of less than 5% believed by many researchers. The maximum CO2 release rate in 2-h steady-state measurements was 94% of the TCER by pigs. This research demonstrated that, in the previous knowledge, there might be a serious underestimation of the CO2 release from the manure in pig houses. The total pig weight, manure temperature and ventilation rate were found the most important variables related to the CO2 release. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the CO2 release as a function of these three variables with R2=0.525.  相似文献

A dynamic soil enclosure was used to characterise monoterpene emissions from 3 soil depths within a Picea sitchensis (Sitka spruce) forest. In addition, a dynamic branch enclosure was used to provide comparative emissions data from foliage. In all cases, limonene and α-pinene dominated monoterpene soil emissions, whilst camphene, β-pinene and myrcene were also present in significant quantities. α-Phellandrene, 3-carene and α-terpinene were occasionally emitted in quantifiable amounts whilst cymene and cineole, although tentatively identified, were always non-quantifiable. Total daily mean monoterpene emission rates, normalised to 30°C, varied considerably between soil depths from 33.6 μg m−2 h−1 (range 28.3–38.4) for undisturbed soil, to 13.0 μg m−2 h−1 (8.97–16.4) with uppermost layer removed, to 199 μg m−2 h−1 (157–216) with partially decayed layer removed, suggesting that the surface needle litter was the most likely source of soil emissions to the atmosphere. Relative monoterpene ratios did not vary significantly between layers. Foliar monoterpenes exhibited a similar emission profile to soils with the exceptions of camphene and 3-carene whose contributions decreased and increased, respectively. Emission rates from foliage, normalised to 30°C were found to have a daily mean of 625 ng g−1 dw h−1 (299–1360). On a land area basis however, total soil emissions were demonstrated to be relatively insignificant to total emissions from the forest ecosystem.  相似文献

Canopy scale emissions of isoprene and monoterpenes from Amazonian rainforest were measured by eddy covariance and eddy accumulation techniques. The peak mixing ratios at about 10 m above the canopy occurred in the afternoon and were typically about 90 pptv of α-pinene and 4–5 ppbv of isoprene. α-pinene was the most abundant monoterpene in the air above the canopy comprising ≈50% of the total monoterpene mixing ratio. Measured isoprene fluxes were almost 10 times higher than α-pinene fluxes. Normalized conditions of 30°C and 1000 μmol m−2 s−1 were associated with an isoprene flux of 2.4 mg m−2 h−1 and a β-pinene flux of 0.26 mg m−2 h−1. Both fluxes were lower than values that have been specified for Amazon rainforests in global emission models. Isoprene flux correlated with a light- and temperature-dependent emission activity factor, and even better with measured sensible heat flux. The variation in the measured α-pinene fluxes, as well as the diurnal cycle of mixing ratio, suggest emissions that are dependent on both light and temperature. The light and temperature dependence can have a significant effect on the modeled diurnal cycle of monoterpene emission as well as on the total monoterpene emission.  相似文献

Surface–atmosphere mercury fluxes are difficult to measure accurately. Current techniques include dynamic flux chambers and micrometeorological gradient and aerodynamic approaches, all of which have a number of intrinsic problems associated with them. We have adapted conditional sampling (relaxed eddy accumulation), a micrometeorological technique commonly used to measure other trace gas fluxes, to measure surface–air mercury fluxes. Our initial flux measurement campaign over an agricultural soil consisted of two 1-week measurement periods, and was longer in duration than previously reported mercury flux measurement periods. Fluxes during both measurement periods ranged between 190.5 (evolution) and –91.7 ng m−2 h−1 (deposition) with an average evolution of 9.67 ng m−2 h−1. The data showed significant diurnal trends, weakly correlated with shallow soil temperatures and solar radiation. This initial trial run indicates that conditional sampling has much promise for the accurate quantification of both short and long-term mercury fluxes.  相似文献

The fungi and bacterial levels of the indoor air environments of 77 office buildings were measured in winter and a comparison was made between the buildings with microbe sources in their structures and those without such sources. Penicillium, yeasts, Cladosporium and non-sporing isolates were the commonest fungi detected in the indoor air and in settled dust, in both the mould-damaged and control buildings. Aspergillus ochraceus, Aspergillus glaucus and Stachybotrys chartarium were found only in environmental samples from the mould-damaged buildings. Some other fungi, with growth requiring of water activity, aw, above 0.85, occurred in both the reference and mould-damaged buildings, but such fungi were commoner in the latter type of buildings. The airborne concentrations of Penicillium, Aspergillus versicolor and yeasts were the best indicators of mould damage in the buildings studied. Penicillium species and A. versicolor were also the most abundant fungi in the material samples. This study showed that the fungi concentrations were very low (2–45 cfu m−3 90% of the concentrations being <15 cfu m−3) in the indoor air of the normal office buildings. Although the concentration range of airborne fungi was wider for the mould-damaged buildings (2–2470 cfu m−3), only about 20% of the samples exceeded 100 cfu m−3. The concentrations of airborne bacteria ranged from 12 to 540 cfu m−3 in the control buildings and from 14 to 1550 cfu m−3 in the mould-damaged buildings. A statistical analysis of the results indicated that bacteria levels are generally <600 cfu m−3 in office buildings in winter and fungi levels are <50 cfu m−3. These normal levels are applicable to subarctic climates for urban, modern office buildings when measurements are made using a six-stage impactor. These levels should not be used in evaluations of health risks, but elevated levels may indicate the presence of abnormal microbe sources in indoor air and a need for additional environmental investigations.  相似文献

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) commenced monitoring for PCDDs/PCDFs (polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans) in ambient air in 1987 and adopted the long term (30 d) sampling approach in 1993. The CTDEP method represents the first use of isotopically labeled PCDDs/PCDFs as field surrogates to monitor the behavior of native PCDDs/PCDFs present in actual ambient air samples. This feature first introduced in 1987 was later adopted by US EPA in revisions to sampling methods for PCDDs/PCDFs in ambient air (EPA Method TO9A) as well as development of EPA Reference Method 23 for measurement of PCDDs/PCFDs in stationary source emissions. Results are provided here for a total of twenty-three (23) samples (reported as pairs) representing twelve (12) 30 d sampling events conducted at a site located in metropolitan Hartford CT. Samples were collected in winter months during calendar years 2002–2008. PCDDs/PCDFs concentration data (pg m−3) are reported as both congener sums (Cl4–Cl8) and 2378-substitued congeners. Total PCDDs/PCDFs concentrations for these twelve (12) sampling events ranged from 0.68 pg m−3 (2003) to 4.18 pg m−3 (2004) with a mean concentration of 2.04 pg m−3.Method performance was monitored through use of collocated samples, in field isotopically labeled compounds, isotopically labeled laboratory applied internal standards and field blank samples. Method performance consistently exceeded goals established in USEPA Method TO9A for these same parameters. Average recoveries of in field labeled PCDDs/PCDFs ranged from 97.5% to 104.2%. Average (mean) recoveries for each of the ten (10) isotopically labeled internal standards ranged from 77.0% (13C-OCDF) to 95.5% (13C-2,3,7,8-TCDF). Method precision defined as % RPD data for collocated sampler pairs ranged from 8% to 14% for PCDDs and from 5% to 12% for PCDFs. The mean RPD for all PCDDs/PCDFs combined is 9.6%. Field monitoring results demonstrate method sensitivity for all PCDDs/PCDFs congeners and 2378-substituted congeners to be well below concentrations typically found for these compounds in ambient air (all reported data represent measured concentrations). Quantities (pg) found in field blanks represent the major determinant to achieving further enhancements in method sensitivity for selected congeners (OCDD < 42 fg m−3; 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD < 5.7 fg m−3; and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF < 2.1 fg m−3). The CTDEP method represents a highly sensitive and reliable technique for monitoring of PCDDs/PCDFs congeners and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) at ultra trace levels in ambient air (fg m−3).  相似文献

Atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were measured in southeastern Korea during the spring of 2002. During this period, severe Asian dust events (ADs) occurred throughout Korea. Total suspended particulates (TSP) of ADs (456.8 μg m−3) increased approximately 3.6-fold compared with non-Asian dust events (NADs; 128.5 μg m−3). However, the concentrations of PCDD/Fs (average concentration, 3.34 pg m−3) did not increase as much as TSP; there was not a significant difference in the concentrations of particle-bound PCDD/Fs collected between ADs (2.45 pg m−3) and NADs (2.05 pg m−3). Meanwhile, according to TSP levels, the concentrations during NADs were 2.8-fold higher than ADs (16.73 and 5.98 ng g−1-TSP, respectively). High TSP levels during sand storms without an increase in PCDD/Fs reflected an increase in coarse and accumulation mode particles. Gas/particle partitioning studies revealed the additional inputs of particulate matters to the air during ADs which did not relate with the increase of PCDD/Fs. Furthermore, emissions from ADs may consist of relatively complex atmospheric particles; back trajectories showed air masses moving at low altitudes over Korea, but there were no differences in PCDD/Fs or atmospheric pollutants regardless of air movements. The study area, which is located in southeastern Korea, might be affected by both marine and regional anthropogenic sources, which do not appear to cause clear differences in PCDD/F concentrations or congener profiles between different air trajectories.  相似文献

The study of mercury (Hg) cycle in Arctic regions is a major subject of concern due to the dramatic increases of Hg concentrations in ecosystem in the last few decades. The causes of such increases are still in debate, and an important way to improve our knowledge on the subject is to study the exchanges of Hg between atmosphere and snow during springtime. We organized an international study from 10 April to 10 May 2003 in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, in order to assess these fluxes through measurements and derived calculations.Snow-to-air emission fluxes of Hg were measured using the flux chamber technique between ∼0 and 50 ng m−2 h−1. A peak in Gaseous Elemental Mercury (GEM) emission flux from the snow to the atmosphere has been measured just few hours after an Atmospheric Mercury Depletion Event (AMDE) recorded on 22 April 2004. Surprisingly, this peak in GEM emitted after this AMDE did not correspond to any increase in Hg concentration in snow surface. A peak in GEM flux after an AMDE was observed only for this single event but not for the four other AMDEs recorded during this spring period. In the snow pack which is seasonal and about 40 cm depth above permafrost, Hg is involved in both production and incorporation processes. The incorporation was evaluated to ∼5–40 pg m2 h. Outside of AMDE periods, Hg flux from the snow surface to the atmosphere was the consequence of GEM production in the air of snow and was about ∼15–50 ng m−2 h−1, with a contribution of deeper snow layers evaluated to ∼0.3–6.5 ng m−2 h−1. The major part of GEM production is then mainly a surface phenomenon. The internal production of GEM was largely increasing when snow temperatures were close to melting, indicating a chemical process occurring in the quasi-liquid layer at the surface of snow grains.  相似文献

Numerous epidemiological studies have demonstrated the association between particle mass (PM) concentration in outside air and the occurrence of health related problems and/or diseases. However, much less is known about indoor PM concentrations and associated health risks. In particular, data are needed on air quality in schools, since children are assumed to be more vulnerable to health hazards and spend a large part of their time in classrooms. On this background, we evaluated indoor air quality in 64 schools in the city of Munich and a neighbouring district outside the city boundary. In winter 2004–2005 in 92 classrooms, and in summer 2005 in 75 classrooms, data on indoor air climate parameters (temperature, relative humidity), carbon dioxide (CO2) and various dust particle fractions (PM10, PM2.5) were collected; for the latter both gravimetrical and continuous measurements by laser aerosol spectrometer (LAS) were implemented. In the summer period, the particle number concentration (PNC), was determined using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). Additionally, data on room and building characteristics were collected by use of a standardized form. Only data collected during teaching hours were considered in analysis. For continuously measured parameters the daily median was used to describe the exposure level in a classroom. The median indoor CO2 concentration in a classroom was 1603 ppm in winter and 405 ppm in summer. With LAS in winter, median PM concentrations of 19.8 μg m−3 (PM2.5) and 91.5 μg m−3 (PM10) were observed, in summer PM concentrations were significantly reduced (median PM2.5=12.7 μg m−3, median PM10=64.9 μg m−3). PM2.5 concentrations determined by the gravimetric method were in general higher (median in winter: 36.7 μg m−3, median in summer: 20.2 μg m−3) but correlated strongly with the LAS-measured results. In explorative analysis, we identified a significant increase of LAS-measured PM2.5 by 1.7 μg m−3 per increase in humidity by 10%, by 0.5 μg m−3 per increase in CO2 indoor concentration by 100 ppm, and a decrease by 2.8 μg m−3 in 5–7th grade classes and by 7.3 μg m−3 in class 8–11 compared to 1–4th class. During the winter period, the associations were stronger regarding class level, reverse regarding humidity (a decrease by 6.4 μg m−3 per increase in 10% humidity) and absent regarding CO2 indoor concentration. The median PNC measured in 36 classrooms ranged between 2622 and 12,145 particles cm−3 (median: 5660 particles cm−3).The results clearly show that exposure to particulate matter in school is high. The increased PM concentrations in winter and their correlation with high CO2 concentrations indicate that inadequate ventilation plays a major role in the establishment of poor indoor air quality. Additionally, the increased PM concentration in low level classes and in rooms with high number of pupils suggest that the physical activity of pupils, which is assumed to be more pronounced in younger children, contributes to a constant process of resuspension of sedimented particles. Further investigations are necessary to increase knowledge on predictors of PM concentration, to assess the toxic potential of indoor particles and to develop and test strategies how to ensure improved indoor air quality in schools.  相似文献

Isoprene fluxes from a Salix viminalis (willow) plantation in western Sweden were measured using the relaxed eddy accumulation (REA) technique. Fluxes of up to 0.23 μg m−2 s−1 could be observed. A standard emission factor at 303 K and a PAR flux of 1000 μ mol m−2 s−1 was estimated to 0.98 μg m−2 s−1 by using the G93 algorithm. The chemistry of an air parcel passing over a willow coppice plantation was investigated utilising a Lagrangian box model in which the measured isoprene fluxes were used as input data. Dispersion after the field was accounted for by a procedure based on the Gaussian plume model. The calculations indicate that, in most cases, the isoprene emissions have a small effect on the local air quality.  相似文献

We present measurements of ammonia (NH3) over a deciduous forest in southern Indiana collected during four field campaigns; two in the spring during the transition to leaf-out and two during the winter. Above canopy NH3 concentrations measured continuously using two Wet Effluent Diffusion Denuders indicate mean concentrations of 0.6–1.2 μg m−3 during the spring and 0.3 μg m−3 during the winter. Measurements suggest that on average the forest act as a sink of NH3, with a representative daily deposition flux of 1.8 mg-NH3 m−2 during the spring. However, on some days during the spring inverted concentration gradients of NH3 were observed resulting in an apparent upward flux of nearly 0.2 mg-NH3 m−2 h−1. Analyses suggest that this apparent emission flux may be due to canopy emission but evaporation of ammonium nitrate particles may also be partly responsible for the observed inverted concentration gradients.  相似文献

PM2.5 aerosols were collected in Nanjing, a typical mega-city in China, during summer and winter 2004 and were characterized for aromatic and cyclic compounds using a GC/MS technique to understand the air pollution problem. They include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes, phthalates and hydroxy-PAHs (OH-PAHs). PAHs, hopanes and OH-PAHs presented higher concentrations in winter (26–178, 3.0–18, and 0.013–0.421 ng m−3, respectively) than in summer (12–96, 1.6–11, and 0.029–0.171 ng m−3, respectively) due to an enhanced coal burning for house heating and atmospheric inversion layers developed in the cold season. In contrast, phthalates are more abundant in summer (109–368 ng m−3, average 230 ng m−3) than in winter (33–390 ng m−3, average 170 ng m−3) due to an enhanced evaporation from plastics during the hot season and the subsequent deposition on the pre-existing particles. Generally, all the identified compounds showed higher concentrations in nighttime than in daytime due to inversion layers and increased emissions from heavy-duty trucks at night. PAHs, hopanes and phthalates in Nanjing aerosols are 5–100 times more abundant than those in Los Angeles, USA, indicating a serious air pollution problem in the city. Concentrations of OH-PAHs are 1–3 orders of magnitude less than their parent PAHs and comparable to those reported from other international cities. Source identification using diagnostic ratios of the organic tracers suggests that PAHs in Nanjing urban area are mainly derived from coal burning, whereas hopanes are more attributable to traffic emissions.  相似文献
