The aim of this study was to determine the influence of different levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) on embryonic development (ED) and hatching success of Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) eggs. Fertilized eggs from six females were exposed to five DO levels: severely hypoxic (10 and 20?%sat [percent saturation]), moderately hypoxic (35 and 50?%sat), and normoxic (100?%sat). Greenland halibut eggs were highly tolerant to hypoxia, with hatching occurring at levels as low as 20?%sat. In severely hypoxic conditions (10?%sat), ED was impaired and no hatching occurred. Lipid composition, during ED, changed as a function of female origin and DO levels. Phospholipids were the dominant lipid class in eggs. Although triacylglycerols were a minor lipid class in terms of abundance, they were only used under severe hypoxia. The results suggest that severe hypoxia (between 10 and 20?%sat) has detrimental effect on the early development of Greenland halibut and may result in reduced recruitment and lower population abundance if the decreasing trend in the DO levels observed in the bottom waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence continues in the future. Other species that share similar life histories may also be at risk.  相似文献

The hatching of the eggs of 3 Acartia species (A. tonsa, A. clausi, and Acartia sp. I) spawned in the laboratory and the eggs of Acartia (species undetermined) isolated from natural bottom sediments was examined under various environmental conditions (temperature, salinity and temperature combinations, oxygen concentration, illumination, and the presence of bottom mud). The range of temperature and salinity in which eggs hatched differed from one species to another. Egg hatching was inhibited under certain environmental conditions for all species, although egg viability under such conditions varied from one species to another. In relation to these findings, habitat separation of planktonic Acartia populations and the role of dormant eggs during their seasonal absence in the plankton of Southern California coastal waters are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of low oxygen concentrations on the hatching and viability of copepod eggs at two stages of embryological development were investigated. Fully developed eggs from Acartia tonsa (Dana) and Labidocera aestiva (Wheeler) collected between July and September 1991 at Turkey Point, Florida, USA, hatched at lower oxygen concentrations than newly spawned eggs given the same incubation periods. Since many of the newly spawned eggs subsequently hatched when exposed to normoxic conditions, it is likely that the exposure to low oxygen delayed embryonic development. At oxygen concentrations where no initial hatching occurred, the subsequent hatching success of fully developed eggs of A. tonsa was higher than that of newly spawned eggs, indicating that newly spawned eggs were more sensitive to low oxygen concentrations. No such difference was observed for the eggs of L. aestiva.  相似文献

 California grunion Leuresthes tenuis (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae) emerge from the ocean to spawn on beaches of southern California. Grunion eggs do not hatch at a set developmental age, but remain in the sand until turbulent surf at high tide washes them out to sea. In previously studied fishes and amphibians that lay eggs terrestrially, low oxygen is the trigger for hatching in water, and high oxygen tensions inhibit hatching. For the grunion, however, eggs placed in air, seawater and oil did not hatch at any at oxygen tension until they were agitated in fluid. Following agitation in seawater, all eggs hatched within several minutes. Grunion eggs in normoxic or hyperoxic water hatched significantly faster than eggs agitated at the lowest oxygen tensions. Although polyclads are amongst the most structurally simple of the triploblastic metazoans, they adopt a wide range of reproductive strategies. Parental care behaviour in this group is yet to be quantified for any species. We assessed the significance of brooding behaviour to the reproductive success of two free-living marine flatworms. Echinoplana celerrima and Stylochus pygmaeus were collected from the field and placed in pairs in containers of filtered seawater where they laid batches of eggs. Both parents were then removed from half of the containers and the brooding behaviour and hatching success of eggs were quantified. There were interspecific differences in brooding behaviour. Egg masses were covered by one E. celerrima parent for 12 ± 2% of time, whereas egg masses of S. pygmaeus were covered by one or both parents simultaneously for 85 ± 8% of time. Egg batches were abandoned by both species immediately prior to the onset of hatching (10–12 days). Hatching success was generally high (~90%) and brooding did not enhance the hatching success of eggs. We assessed the significance of parental care to hatching success of E. celerrima egg masses in the presence of three potential egg predators; in the presence of other organisms. E. celerrima devoted less time to brooding; however, hatching success was not affected. The amount of time spent brooding eggs differed greatly between the two polyclad species but was not essential to their reproductive success under benign conditions. Parental care may be of adaptive value under more stressful environmental conditions commonly experienced in estuarine environments such as lowered salinity, increased hypoxia or turbidity. Covering egg batches may play an additional role of advertising sexual status and a willingness to care for eggs.  相似文献

The theory of sex allocation suggests that if the reproductive value and the cost of producing/rearing offspring differ between male and female offspring, parents should invest differently in sexes depending on environmental conditions. Female parents could allocate more resources to eggs of one sex to compensate potential sex-dependent constraints later during the nestling period. In this study, we tested the influence of environmental conditions on sexual dimorphism in eggs of Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) by experimentally manipulating food availability before laying. We found that an increase in food abundance before laying did not increase egg mass but changed sex-dependent resource distribution in eggs. In food-supplemented pairs, but not in control pairs, egg mass and hatchling mass were similar between males and females. In addition, we found, in the food-supplemented group, that the latest hatched females showed shorter hatching times than in the control group. In control pairs, female eggs, hatchlings and nestlings were heavier than males. In addition, male fledglings in the food-supplemented group gained less mass than those in the control group. As that food abundance was only increased until the onset of laying, female kestrels were expected to invest in eggs taking food abundance before egg formation as a predictor of future conditions during brood rearing. Our study shows that environmental conditions before laying promote a subtle adjustment of the resources invested in both sexes of offspring rather than in other breeding parameters. This adjustment resulted in a shortening of hatching time of the last hatched females that possibly gives them advantages in their competitive capacity with respect to male nest-mates.  相似文献

The respiratory physiology of summer diapausing eggs of the neustonic copepodAnomalocera patersoni, maintained under constant temperature (13 °C) and light (12 h light:12 h dark) conditions, was characterized by a bell-shaped curve, with low O2 uptake levels at the beginning of dormancy. This was followed by a steady rise in O2 consumption with maximum levels of 0.002 l O2 embryo–1 h–1 70 d after spawning. A slow diminution in O2 uptake then occurred until Day 150 when minimum values of 0.0003 l O2 embryo–1 h–1 were recorded, coinciding with the hatching of the first embryos. Embryos continued to hatch asynchronously up to 360 d from the moment of egg laying. When eggs were subjected to 20 °C, the respiratory activity was almost three times higher than at 13 °C, even though both respiratory curves were similar. The elevated metabolism in eggs kept at 20 °C led to death of the embryos possibly due to a total depletion of metabolic reserves. ATP content also differed at the two temperatures. Diapause eggs kept at 20 °C showed no rapid rise in ATP content as opposed to those kept at 13 °C. The results of temperature shock experiments, in which eggs were first kept at winter temperatures for several weeks, after which the temperature was raised to 20 °C for another number of weeks prior to a second period of chilling at 13 °C, showed that as long as embryos were kept at 20 °C no hatching occurred. By contrast, hatching was observed after 10 d following the resumption of winter temperatures, suggesting that low environmental temperatures are an essential prerequisite for hatching of these eggs. The type of diapause inA. patersoni differs considerably from the one described in insects and in another neustonic copepod,Pontella mediterrana. In this case, there is a U-shaped respiratory curve with greatest O2 consumption prior to the onset or upon breaking of diapause. Differences in the two types of diapause seem to involve not only differences in O2 consumption levels but also in the sequence of metabolic changes with time and the metabolic requirements during sommer and winter dormancy.  相似文献

Summary. Recent studies indicate that amphibian eggs are capable of hatching plasticity in response to chemical cues released by predators feeding on conspecific eggs or larvae. However, information is scarce on the relative importance of predator and conspecific cues in such a process. In particular, no attempt has been made to compare the effects of embryonic exposures to chemical cues indicative of a predation risk for eggs and larvae, although both life stages can co-occur in natural habitats. In this context, common frog embryos (Rana temporaria) were raised until hatching in the presence of crushed conspecific extracts from eggs and tadpoles to assess their respective influences on some hatching and larval traits. While a significant delay in hatching time was observed in embryos exposed to chemical cues from tadpole extract, this life-history shift appeared unaffected by embryonic exposure to egg extract. Hatchlings derived from eggs incubated in the presence of both conspecific extracts showed a significantly greater weight than unexposed controls. However, such an effect was no longer apparent 15, 30 and 50 days after hatching, suggesting that embryonic exposure to chemical cues from damaged conspecific eggs and tadpoles has no influence on larval growth. Lastly, morphological measurements performed on hatchlings and older tadpoles (15, 30 and 50 days old) revealed no significant effect of embryonic treatments on the shape of body and tail.  相似文献

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on embryonic development of the calanoid copepod Calanus sinicus was studied. Differences of pressure effect among blastomere stages, 1-cell, 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, 16-cell, blastula and limb-bud stage, were examined under two pressurizing conditions, abruptly (10 atm/min) and gradually (0.1 atm/min) increasing. Egg hatching success, deformity frequency and apoptotic cell degradation of hatched nauplii were examined. Egg hatching success rate was not significantly different between blastomere stages, and also between pressurizing conditions. Deformity frequencies of hatched nauplii were low in the early 1-cell and 2-cell stages, and high in the later blastula and limb-bud stages, in both abrupt and gradual pressurizing conditions. On the other hand, in regard to difference in pressurizing conditions, deformity frequency in gradual pressurizing was significantly higher than that in abrupt pressurizing rate. Gradual pressure increase seems to be more harmful to C. sinicus eggs than abrupt pressure change. Apoptosis induced in nauplii by hydrostatic pressure was detected for the first time in marine zooplankton. The embryos of C. sinicus are sensitive to pressure variations, that is, these embryos are supposed to sink to deeper waters, incurring greater risk of having deformities. In the field, C. sinicus ascend to the surface and spawn at night. By looking from this upward behavior, eggs are spawned at lower pressure and warmer temperature. Probably, the harmless low pressure and warm temperature lead eggs to hatch early and to recruit successfully.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to establish the role of free amino acids (FAA) in aerobic energy dissipation in embryos of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) which contain an oil globule in the egg. Laboratory-reared developing eggs and larvae (15°C, 34 salinity) were measured for oxygen uptake, ammonia excretion, contents of FAA, protein, and ammonium, and volumes of yolksac and oil globule. Newly spawned eggs from different batches contained 55 to 90 nmol egg–1 of FAA. Resorption of FAA occurred in parallel with the consumption of yolk. Resorption of the oil globule, however, occurred predominantly after hatching and mainly after yolk resorption. The combined data suggest that approximately 70% of the FAA are utilized as an energy substrate, while the rest are polymerized into body proteins. FAA become a significant energy substrate in the early egg stage and account for 100% of the aerobic energy dissipation 2 d after Fertilization then decrease to ca. 60% at the time of hatching. Lipids derived from the oil globule seem to be the main fuel after hatching and account for ca. 90% of the energy dissipation at the onset of first-feeding. Thus, the energetics of fish embryos which contain an oil globule seems to be different from those that depend exclusively on the nutritional reserves of the yolk.  相似文献

Copepod resting eggs are abundant in the seabed of many bays and estuaries where they provide a potential source of recruits for growth of planktonic populations. In the northeastern Gulf of Mexico the copepod Centropages hamatus (Lillejeborg) occurs in the water column only during the late fall, winter and early spring. The species produces subitaneous and diapause eggs, and both egg types have been found in the seabed. We determined the longevity of these two egg types to ascertain their potential for contributing to the growth of the planktonic population and for sustaining a persistent egg bank. Eggs were collected from females and incubated in the laboratory under temperature and oxygen conditions chosen to simulate field conditions. The diapause eggs were also exposed to sulfide. The total hatching success of subitaneous eggs in two experiments declined from highs of 78 and 97% to zero after 60 and 90 d of exposure to anoxia. The total hatching success of diapause eggs that were exposed to anoxia for 90 d however was typically greater than 80%. Some diapause eggs hatched after being incubated under anoxia for 437 d. Diapause eggs survived longer at ambient field temperatures when incubated under anoxia (437 d) compared to normoxia (118 d). Exposure to sulfide did not result in greater mortality of diapause eggs compared to anoxia alone. Diapause eggs that were incubated at ambient field temperatures did not hatch when exposed to normoxia until the temperature dropped to <20 °C. The results of this study suggest that C.␣hamatus sustain a short-term reserve of subitaneous eggs in the seabed that provides recruits for the current year's population. The greater longevity of diapause eggs suggests that they sustain the seasonal reappearance of the species year after year in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. However, the contribution of diapause eggs of C. hamatus from the Gulf of Mexico to a persistent egg bank is questionable since hatching ceased after 437 d. Eggs of halibut [Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.)] have a negative buoyancy in sea water of 35 S, in contrast to eggs of most flatfish species. The cause of this was investigated. The osmolality of the yolk is 350–420 mOsm during embryonic development. This is within the range for marine teleost serum and for yolk of pelagic eggs. Concentrations of major inorganic ions are comparable with those of pelagic plaice eggs [Pleuronectes platessa (L.)]. The values for Na+, K+ and Cl- are 6, 85, and 64 mmol · (1 H2O)-1 after fertilization, and at the time of hatching the corresponding values are 17, 11, and 80. Large amounts of other inorganic constitutents are excluded for osmotic reasons. Malfunction in the regulation of osmolality or of inorganic constituents is thus unlikely to be the cause of negative buoyancy. The relative dry weight of the chorion (egg shell) in halibut eggs is less than in several pelagic egg types, excluding the chorion as the main contributor of negative buoyancy. It is concluded that a high content of organic matter in the rest of the egg is the cause of the negative buoyancy.  相似文献

Variations of ascorbic acid content were studied during different stages of embryogenesis in the two crustaceans Cancer pagurus and Palaemon serratus. Variations in the egg volume of P. serratus were also measured at each stage of embryogenesis. The eggs appeared able to synthesize ascorbic acid during the earlier embryonic stages. Ascorbic acid changes in the crustaceans' eggs are discussed in relation to the variations of proline, chitin, glycogen and glucose already studied. Ascorbic acid appears to play an important role in the survival of eggs incubating under unfavourable environmental conditions. Before hatching, the ascorbic acid content is as high as after spawning.  相似文献

We investigated mycosporine amino acid (MAA) involvement as protective sunscreens in spawn of the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela to determine if adult diet and ultraviolet (UV) exposure affected the UV sensitivity of developing embryos. Adults were fed a red alga rich in MAAs (Acanthophora spicifera) or a green alga poor in MAAs (Ulva lactuca). Adults on each diet were exposed for 2 wk to ambient solar irradiance with two types of acrylic filters; one allowed exposure to wavelengths >275 nm (designated UV) and one to wavelengths only >410 nm (designated NOUV). Spawn from each adult group was likewise treated with UV or NOUV and monitored during development for differences in mortality and metabolic rate (measured as oxygen consumption: O2). Also recorded were number of eggs or embryos per capsule, times to hatching, hatching success, size at hatching, and O2 of adults. Spawn from adults eating red algae was almost twice as rich in MAAs as spawn from adults eating green algae, suggesting that MAA content is diet-related. Although overall quantities of MAAs in the spawn reflected MAA contents of the adult diet, specific MAAs were differentially sequestered in the spawn. Thus, porphyra-334, found in high concentration in Aplysia dactylomela's preferred red algal food, was present in only low concentration in the spawn. Conversely, mycosporine-glycine, in low concentration in red algal food, was the most abundant MAA in the spawn. UV treatment of adults had no effect on quantities of MAAs in the spawn. Adults exposed to UV had significantly higher O2s and spawned twice as often. The UV-treated adults produced spawn with significantly higher O2s and their embryos developed to hatching sooner. The only significant effect of UV exposure of the spawn was to reduce the percentage of veligers hatching from 71 to 50%. Semi-lunar spawning in the intertidal zone has been observed in many teleost species. Because the eggs of these species are placed at elevations reached only by the highest tides, the timing of hatching is critical to survival. To quantify and clarify the relationship between development rate, hatching, and survival we developed a computer model that simulated the reproductive strategy in one such species, Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus). We determined expected hatching success for F. heteroclitus embryos as a function of development rate by simulating spawning, embryo development, and hatching of F. heteroclitus embryos in Delaware Bay. Our simulation analysis included manipulation of several model parameters. The results indicated that there is balancing selection acting on development rate in this species. In particular, false hatching cues (rainfall) increased mortality among embryos with very fast and very slow development rates. The simulation results did not appear susceptible to manipulation of the sensitivity of embryos to false hatching cues. The timing of spawning relative to the spring tides determines which development rate is optimal in terms of average hatching success. Including a constant daily mortality rate in our simulations, as a simple model of predation and/or disease, shifted the optimized development rates to faster values. A warm-water neritic calanoid copepod, Tortanus forcipatus, has been found to lay two physiologically different types of eggs (subitaneous and diapause eggs), which are separately spawned in response to different seasonal environmental conditions. Subitaneous eggs are produced when the planktonic populations are at their numerical maxima, and are only shed until late summer. After peak spawning, true resting eggs are spawned which undergo diapause for 1 to 3 months. The eggs recover from their diapause around mid-winter, but hatching does not take place until the water temperature at the sea bottom exceeds 15°C in early summer.  相似文献

The current model for larval release in subtidal crustaceans suggests that hatching time is controlled by the embryos, which release a pheromone that stimulates the parent female to undergo behaviors that synchronize larval release. Alternatively, hatching could be controlled by the females. Ovigerous spiny lobsters Panulirus argus (Latreille) exhibit stereotypic behaviors during larval release, including rapid abdominal extensions and pleopod-pumping activity. Ovigerous P. argus were collected from coral reefs in the Florida Keys, USA during the summers of 2005 and 2006. Pleopod-pumping activity was quantified to determine if a female’s pumping activity correlates with the developmental state of the embryos. The role of pheromones released by developing and hatching embryos in controlling pumping behaviors was tested by measuring the pumping response of ovigerous lobsters to (1) hatch water, (2) homogenized embryo water, (3) embryo-conditioned water (unhatched late-stage embryos soaked for 20 h), and (4) water containing homogenized post-hatch embryo cases. Bioassays were conducted under constant conditions (dim-red light) in the laboratory at random times during the day to control for any possible rhythm in pumping activity. Spontaneous pleopod-pumping activity increased significantly with increasing embryo development. Upon exposure to hatch water, ovigerous lobsters with late-stage embryos displayed increased pleopod pumping with increased treatment concentration. Water individually conditioned with homogenized late-stage embryos, intact late-stage embryos, and homogenized post-hatch embryo cases all induced larval release behaviors in females with late-stage embryos. Ovigerous females with early-stage embryos did not respond to water conditioned with homogenized early- or late-stage embryos. These results suggest that active substances are released by embryos at the time of hatching and induce the stereotypical pumping behaviors of the female that synchronizes larval release. The results support the model that larval release in subtidal crustaceans is controlled by pheromones released from hatching embryos.  相似文献

Adult Sepia officinalis L. were caught in June 1984, in the coastal waters of Wimereux (France). Deposition of the eggs took place in the seawater aquaria of the Station Marine. The oxygen consumption of S. officinalis was measured during embryonic and juvenile development. Aerobic metabolism occurs as soon as the early embryonic Stage 21. Oxygen diffuses through the initially thick egg shell; the oxygen level in the perivitelline liquid reaches a maximal value just before hatching (116.7±6.9 mm Hg). Hatchings display only a slight increase in oxygen consumption compared to embryos in the last stage of development. Respiration experiments with 40 d old juveniles showed that oxygen consumption increases with temperature, but is not affected by photoperiod. Experiments under increasing hypoxia revealed that S. officinalis juveniles are good regulators and maintain a constant oxygen consumption in the range of 4 to 7 mg O2l-1. Juveniles successfully recover from an hypoxic stress of 2 mg O2l-1 maintained for 1 h. This suggests that the respiratory pigments (pre-hemocyanins) of 40 d-old juveniles have a high oxygen affinity and/or that these juveniles have the ability to adapt to anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

Hatching of the eggs of four species of copepods, Acartia tonsa, Labidocera aestiva, Tortanus discaudatus, and Centropages hamatus was suppressed at oxygen concentrations less than 0.02 ml O2/l. When such eggs were subsequently exposed to normal oxygen concentrations, hatching varied among the species, indicating variability in the capacity of eggs to survive exposure to low oxygen. Incubation of eggs at low oxygen concentrations resulted in an increase in the duration of embryonic development. Experiments were conducted in closed systems and oxygen concentration was determined by thermal conductivity using gas chromatography.  相似文献

In avian species, maternal provisioning to the eggs is predicted to be more valuable for the offspring under adverse environmental conditions and intense sibling competition. However, studies manipulating both the amount of maternal pre-hatching resources and the harshness of post-hatching environment have seldom been performed to date. In this experimental study of Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) nestlings, we tested the consequences of a reduction in the albumen content of the eggs for fitness-related offspring traits, while performing an unbalanced partial cross-fostering soon after hatching, either increasing or decreasing brood size by one nestling. By molecular sexing of the chicks, we additionally tested for sex-specific sensitivity of individual nestlings to experimental treatments and to sex ratio variation in nestmates. We predicted that chicks hatching from albumen-deprived eggs should suffer more than control chicks from the harsher rearing conditions of enlarged broods. However, although albumen removal depressed chick body mass, chicks hatching from control eggs did not fare better than those hatching from eggs with reduced albumen content in enlarged vs. reduced broods. Albumen removal had sex-specific effects on immunity, with males, but not females, hatching from eggs with reduced albumen content showing a lower T-cell-mediated immune response than controls, suggesting that the two sexes were differentially susceptible to resource deprivation during early ontogeny. In addition, both immune response and chick body mass at age 7 days, when maximum growth rate is attained, declined with an increasing proportion of male nestmates. The effect of brood size manipulation on chick body mass at age 12 days, when peak body mass is attained, was also found to depend on brood sex composition, in that an increase in the proportion of male nestmates depressed offspring body mass in reduced broods, while the reverse was true in enlarged broods. On the whole, these findings suggest that sex differences may exist in environmental sensitivity and patterns of resource allocation among different body functions, and that brood size variation and sex composition may affect offspring fitness-related traits.  相似文献
