Territorial Parma microlepis (Günther) (Pomacentridae) were collected at different depths, at three sites in each of four estuaries near Sydney, Australia.
Element concentrations were measured by induc- tively-coupled–plasma mass spectrometry. Significant differences in concentrations
of Mn and Ba were found in the otoliths of fish sampled in different depth strata, with concentrations generally greatest
in fish found in water <4 m deep. Depth-related differences varied among estuaries (e.g. 0 to 1.2 μg Ba g−1 otolith). In most estuaries there was a negative linear relationship between concentrations of Mn and Ba in otoliths and
actual depth. Great variation was found within an estuary among sites separated by 0.5 to 3 km. In the eye lenses, concentrations
of Rb differed according to depth of capture of fish. The age of fish (1+ to 34 yr) had no influence on the concentrations
of elements in otoliths or lenses. Multivariate comparisons of elemental composition (= fingerprints) detected significant
differences among depth strata. Fish collected from shallow water had the clearest multivariate classification according to
depth. There was a close match between our shallow strata and the average depths reached by low-salinity/high-temperature
estuarine plumes. The element composition of whole otoliths and lenses represents average concentrations experienced by the
fish. The temporal resolution of differences in ambient conditions is likely to be coarse in the fish (i.e. months to years).

The eye lenses of Parma microlepis from the rocky barrens of Sydney (New South Wales, Australia) were found to contain Ba, Hg, Rb, and Sr at concentrations above the quantitative detection limits of solution-based inductively-coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS). Lenses were separated into the hard central nucleus and the softer surrounding cortex. Nuclei contained lower (equal for Ba) concentrations of these metals. Biochemical analysis of the protein composition of these lenses revealed differences in the ratio of γ-crystallin to β-crystallin in the lens nucleus and cortex. These changes were shown to be attributable both to protein degradation and changes in protein synthesis as fish age. Such changes may lead to the loss of sequestered metals from older cell layers, or change the affinity of new layers for particular trace metals. Differential binding affinities of these crystallins may, therefore, partially account for trace-metal differences observed in the lens nucleus and cortex. Parma microlepis (Günther) were collected from Malabar, an urban location close to the centre of Sydney, Australia, and from Jervis Bay, a
reference location 170 km south of the city centre. At each location, fish were collected from two sites separated by 100
to 200 m. The ultrastructure of normal liver tissue is described based on 20 female fish collected from Jervis Bay, where
fish are known to be exposed to low levels of organochlorine contaminants. Alterations in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria,
lysosomes and nuclei of hepatocytes were identified and quantified in the liver tissue of fish from this location and compared
to alterations in 20 female fish collected from Malabar, where fish are exposed to higher concentrations of organochlorine
pesticides such as DDT compounds. There were significant differences in the percentage of hepatocytes with swollen mitochondria
(F = 124.025, df = 2, 2, P = 0.008) and atypical nuclei (F = 22.198, df = 2, 2, P = 0.043) between sites (100 to 200 m apart), but there were no clear differences between the percentage of structural alterations
in the hepatocytes of P. microlepis from Jervis Bay and Malabar. Associations between liver morphology and the organochlorines aldrin, dieldrin, DDE and chlordane
were examined using a Pearson correlation matrix. Significant correlations were detected between the percentage of hepatocytes
with dilated endoplasmic reticulum and the concentrations of the pesticide aldrin (r = 0.600, df = 11, r
crit(α = 0.05) = 0.553). Significant associations were also detected between the percentage of hepatocytes with disorganised endoplasmic
reticulum and the concentrations of dieldrin and DDE residues in fish (r = 0.576, r = 0.567, respectively, df = 13, r
crit (α = 0.05) = 0.514). However, there was little evidence that ultrastructural alterations in fish responded to increasing concentrations
of these pesticides in a consistent dose-response manner.

Catches obtained at regular intervals by beach seining, gill netting and otter trawling at ten, four and six sites, respectively, have been used to determine the contribution of the different species and life-cycle categories of fish to the ichthyofauna of the large Swan Estuary in temperate south-western Australia between February 1977 and December 1981. These data were also examined to investigate the influence of site, season and year on the densities of the more abundant species. A total of 630 803 fish, representing 36 families and 71 species, were caught in the shallows using beach seines during this 5 yr study. Although the majority of these species were marine teleosts that were caught infrequently (marine stragglers), representatives of 7 of the 15 most abundant species were marine teleosts which entered the estuary regularly, and in large numbers (marine estuarine-opportunists). Of the remaining 8 most abundant species in the shallows, 7 completed their life cycle within the estuary (estuarine species) and 1 (Nematalosa vlaminghi) was anadromous, feeding for a period at sea and spawning in the upper reaches of the estuary. The contribution of individuals of the marine estuarine-opportunist category to catches in the shallows declined from nearly 95% in the lower estuary, to 17% in the middle estuary and 6% in the upper estuary. The estuarine and anadromous groups made a considerable contribution to the catches in both the middle and upper estuaries. By contrast, the contribution of freshwater species was small and even in the upper estuary accounted for only 0.2% of the catch. Site within the estuary generally influenced the catches of individual species to a greater extent than either season or year, or the interactions between these factors. When seasonal effects were strong, they could be related to summer spawning migrations into the upper estuary (Nematalosa vlaminghi, Amniataba caudavittatus), spring immigrations into the lower estuary (Mugil cephalus), or winter movements into deeper and more saline waters (Apogon rueppellii). Annual variations in the density of Torquigener pleurogramma were related to marked annual differences in the recruitment of the 0+age class. 相似文献

Predation, habitat complexity, and variation in density-dependent mortality of temperate reef fishes

Density dependence in demographic rates can strongly affect the dynamics of populations. However, the mechanisms generating density dependence (e.g., predation) are also dynamic processes and may be influenced by local conditions. Understanding the manner in which local habitat features affect the occurrence and/or strength of density dependence will increase our understanding of population dynamics in heterogeneous environments. In this study I conducted two separate field experiments to investigate how local predator density and habitat complexity affect the occurrence and form of density-dependent mortality of juvenile rockfishes (Sebastes spp.). I also used yearly censuses of rockfish populations on nearshore reefs throughout central California to evaluate mortality of juvenile rockfish at large spatial scales. Manipulations of predators (juvenile bocaccio, S. paucispinus) and prey (kelp, gopher, and black-and-yellow [KGB] rockfish, Sebastes spp.) demonstrated that increasing the density of predators altered their functional response and thus altered patterns of density dependence in mortality of their prey. At low densities of predators, the number of prey consumed per predator was a decelerating function, and mortality of prey was inversely density dependent. However, at high densities of predators, the number of prey killed per predator became an accelerating response, and prey mortality was directly density dependent. Results of field experiments and large-scale surveys both indicated that the strength of density-dependent mortality may also be affected by the structural complexity of the habitat. In small-scale field experiments, increased habitat complexity increased the strength of density-dependent mortality. However, at large scales, increasing complexity resulted in a decrease in the strength of density dependence. I suggest that these differences resulted from scale-dependent changes in the predatory response that generated mortality. Whether increased habitat complexity leads to an increase or a decrease in the strength of density-dependent mortality may depend on how specific predatory responses (e.g., functional or aggregative) are altered by habitat complexity. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that rates of demographic density dependence and the resulting dynamics of local populations may largely depend upon attributes of the local habitat. 相似文献

Wave exposure,swimming performance,and the structure of tropical and temperate reef fish assemblages
We examined the relationship between swimming performance, wave exposure, and the distribution patterns of labrids on temperate rocky reefs, in comparison with previous functional analyses of a tropical assemblage. Visual censuses of the distribution and abundance of labrids across two major gradients of wave exposure (depth and aspect to prevailing winds) were made at two offshore islands near Port Stephens, New South Wales, Australia. Distinct shifts in species composition and abundance were evident between high and low wave exposure habitats on temperate rocky reefs, particularly between deep and shallow habitats on exposed reef fronts. The swimming performances of temperate labrids were assessed through examination of pectoral fin shape (aspect ratio) and in situ swimming speeds. A diversity of pectoral fin morphologies was exhibited within this temperate assemblage, ranging from rounded to tapered fins (aspect ratios of 0.52 and 1.43, respectively). Fin shape was strongly correlated (Pearsons correlation 0.884, P<0.001) with swimming speed (ranging from 1.05 and 3.06 body lengths s–1), in a relationship comparable to that observed in tropical labrids. Inter-specific differences in swimming ability provided some explanation for differences in the distribution and abundance of temperate labrids in relation to wave exposure. However, our findings suggest that although coral reef labrids appear to predominantly use high aspect-ratio fins to successfully occupy wave-exposed habitats, temperate labrids appear to be using an enhanced swimming ability through increased body size.Communicated by G.F. The zooplankton and physicochemistry of Ehoma lake were studied from March 2005 to August 2006 in order to evaluate seasonal trend in species composition and abundance in relation to water quality. Forty two (42) species of rotifers dominated by Keratella tropica tropica were encountered. Species richness declined by nearly 50% from dry season values during the rainy season. Species richness was higher in the littoral zone during the dry season, the reverse was the case during the rainy season. Species abundance followed similar trend as species richness. Abundance was closely associated with dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand and width of the lake and these in turn varied significantly between seasons. Shannon-Weaver diversity varied from 2.2 to 3.8 bit ind(-1) and significantly between seasons (p<0.05). Anuraeopsis navicula navicula and Euchlanis dilatata dilatata Ehrenbreg were the only species gained during the flood periods. 相似文献

The seasonal variation of fish species composition and abundance in gillnet catches (14-90 mm knot-to-knot) from the Greek part of the transboundary Lake Doirani was studied during the period 2006-2007. A total of 8,419 specimens weighing 182.3 kg and belonging to 9 species were caught. Catch composition differed with season. Thus, Rhodeus meridionalis dominated in terms of NPUE the spring, Perca fluviatilis the summer and Albumus macedonicus the autumn and winter catches. Cyprinids were generally the most abundant, with the cyprinids:percids biomass ratio ranging from 1.7 in summer to 14.8 in winter, supporting the eutrophic character of the lake. Richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity and evenness indices differed seasonally (ANOVA; p < 0.05). The abundance-biomass comparative (ABC) curves showed that fish communities were dominated by one or a few opportunistic species (e.g. Rhodeus meridionalis, Albumus macedonicus), which while dominated in number did not dominate in biomass, being small bodied. 相似文献

In the period September 1986 to August 1987 fish were captured once a month, using an otter trawl, from the intertidal and subtidal regions of Sulaibikhat Bay, Kuwait. Correlation analysis revealed that numbers were not directly related to temperature at the time of sampling. The recruitment of large numbers of young of the year Liza carinata (Valenciennes) during March was related to low temperatures in November, the probable time of spawning of this species. Salinity at the time of sampling was inversely correlated with numbers. This result indicates that large numbers of 0+fish recruit to the Bay during the period of maximum fresh water outflow through the Shatt-al-Arab. Numbers of fish were significantly greater in the intertidal region, where they were present almost entirely as 0 group fish, than in the subtidal. The three dominant species of the assemblage are shown to use the two depth intervals in differnt ways. L. carinata was capture a almost exclusively in the intertidal region as 0+ fish. Pomadasys stridens (Forsskål) was captured as 0+ fish in both the intertidal and subtidal regions but in greater numbers in the intertidal region. Leiognathus brevirostris (Valenciennes) was captured as small, mostly 0+ individuals in the intertidal region and as larger fish in the subtidal region. The use made by the smaller fish of the intertidal region is related to the avoidance of sublittoral predators and reduction of intraspecific competition, whilst larger fish in the sublittoral region may be avoiding predation by piscivorous birds. 相似文献

Capnella gaboensis Verseveldt, 1977 was sampled at four sites in Sydney Harbour, during 1981–1984. This soft coral has an annual cycle of gonad development, with gonad number reaching a peak in May several weeks prior to spawning, and gonad size reaching a peak in May–June at spawning. The gonads develop during the warm months, and colonies spawn their gametes in late autumn and early winter. Gonad development is neither synchronous within colonies nor within populations, possibly reflecting the protracted nature of spawning. The histology of the developing oocytes and spermaries is described in detail C. gaboensis is a surface-brooder. The planulae are similar in structure to the larvae of other octocorals. The larvae are benthic, settling quickly upon suitable substratum, metamorphosing into polyps with mouths, tentacles and spicules, approximately one week after settling. 相似文献

Home range, activity and distribution patterns of a temperate rocky-reef fish, Cheilodactylus fuscus
Red morwong (Cheilodactylus fuscus; Cheilodactylidae: Perciformes), are large temperate rocky reef fish that are patchily distributed in local aggregations
of 3 to >100 fish. The home ranges and aggregating behaviour of red morwong were investigated using external tags (n = 114, over 35 mo) and ultrasonic transmitters (n = 9 over 20 d) at coastal and estuarine sites in south-east Australia. Adult red morwong had a mean home range during the
day of 1865 m2 (SE = 268). Night movement, determined by ultrasonic telemetry, indicated a significantly greater mean home range of 3639 m2 (SE = 416). Home range did not differ significantly with size or sex. Fish movements were greatest and aggregation sizes
varied most during the non-reproductive mid-summer period. Tagged fish (N = 20) displaced 200 to 900 m returned in 1 to 3 d to the point of capture, often traversing open sand habitat and other aggregations.
During the day, fish were commonly found on bouldered habitat. During the night, these site-specific aggregations fragmented
as fish dispersed over a variety of substrata, with crepuscular peaks in activity. Therefore, estimates of habitat-specificity
and feeding patterns collected only by day may give misleading results.

Feeding energetics and metabolism in demersal fish species from Antarctic,temperate and tropical environments 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The energetics of feeding has been investigated in demersal fish with similar sedentary lifestyles from the Antarctic (Notothenia neglecta Nybelin), North Sea (Myoxocephalus scorpius L.) and Indian Ocean (Cirrhitichys bleekeri Bleeker). In general, the metabolic rates of fasting individuals were positively correlated with adaptation temperature: values for a standard 100 g fish (mg O2/h) were 3.3 for N. neglecta at around 0 °C, 2.7 for winter-acclimatized M. scorpius at 5 °C, 4.3 for summer-acclimatized M. scorpius at 15 °C, and 7.0 for C. bleekeri at 25 °C. In all species, following a single satiating meal, oxygen consumption increased to a peak of 2 to 3.5 times the fasting values. Maximum rates of oxygen consumption after feeding were several-fold higher in the warm-than in the cold-water species. After controlling for the effects of body mass and energy intake by analysis of covariance, the duration of the increase in metabolic rate, referred to as specific dynamic action (SDA), was found to be 3 to 4 times shorter in the warm- than in the cold-water fish, ranging from 57 h in C. bleekeri to 208 h in N. neglecta. In contrast, the SDA was not significantly different in the various species, corresponding to 15 to 23% of the energy ingested. Seasonal influences on metabolism and feeding were also studied in N. neglecta acclimated to simulated winter (-1.0 to-0.5 °C; 3 h light:21 h dark) or summer (0 to 0.9 °C; 21 h light:3 h dark) conditions. The metabolic rates of fasting and fed individuals, and the characteristics of the SDA were found to be independent of acclimation conditions. This suggests that N. neglecta is capable of processing food at similar rates throughout the year. Energy stores and enzyme activities were measured in the swimming muscles and liver of fish fed ad libitum. Summer-acclimated fish had higher concentrations of liver triglyceride stores and elevated activities of some enzymes of intermediary metabolism relative to winter-acclimated fish. The observed changes in intermdiary metabolism are probably related to annual cycles of growth and reproduction. It is suggested that the low aerobic scope for physiological performance in Antarctic fish may necessitate the seasonal switching of energy allocation between growth and reproduction. 相似文献

Summary Australia has many cooperatively breeding species of birds. These tend to occur in eucalypt and semi-arid woodlands rather than in rainforests or deserts. They tend to be insectivores that pursue rather than sit and wait for their prey, and tend to forage on the ground rather than above it. We propose that environments where resources do not show marked seasonal fluctuations are those in which cooperative breeding is most likely to evolve. Under these conditions birds might experience difficulty acquiring the extra food necessary to breed, especially if inexperienced. When adult survival was high, young and inexperienced birds could delay breeding. Unpredictable environments may also favor cooperative breeding, but our data do not strongly support this. Groupliving would be favored further if young birds are particularly vulnerable to predators when alone. They should therefore remain in the family group and delay their dispersal unitl a suitable breeding vacancy becomes available. These hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, but are complementary. Both may be required to ensure that at least some year-old birds do not breed and also do not disperse. We believe that they give rise to predictions, which can be tested in future field studies. 相似文献

A settlement study, based in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland, New Zealand, has revealed 3 different seasonal reproductive patterns among Demospongiae. Species which settled on our substrates can be divided into summer settlers, winter settlers, or all-year-round settlers. The composition of these groups is given, and the affinities and habitats of the constituent species are commented on. Dispersion, distribution, development and feeding incidence of larvae of the naked goby,Gobiosoma bosci (Lacepéde), were examined for linkages between larval behavior while near the reef surface and later patterns of settlement and recruitment. Field sampling and experiments were conducted during the summers of 1988 and 1989 in the Flag Pond oyster reef along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay near Camp Conoy, Maryland, USA. Results indicated that prior to settlement most demersal larvae aggregate in shoals and exhibit distinct microhabitat preferences on the reef. In a field experiment, larvae settled both during the day and at night. Dispersion at settlement was aggregated, suggesting that demersal shoaling influences settlement patterns in this species. The distribution of demersal larvae also indicated that larval swimming behavior is sufficiently strong to permit active control of position on reefs. Large demersal larvae settled rapidly when brought to the laboratory, but small larvae in demersal shoals appeared to require additional growth and morphological development prior to settlement. Development of the pelvic fins, used by juveniles and adults for perching on the substrate, may be a good indicator of competence to settle in this species. The adaptive significance of demersal shoaling by small larvae of the naked goby, and the fate of these larvae, remains perplexing because the low feeding rates found for larvae shoaling near the reef surface should slow or prevent the growth and development required prior to settlement. Observations made by other authors indicate that demersal shoaling and the use of water directly overlying reefs may be common behaviors of temperate and tropical reef fishes. 相似文献

Sediment samples were collected from 10 sites in Lake Ulansuhai during summer and winter 2009 to reveal seasonal variations in sediment heavy metal levels. The geoaccumulation index (GI) was calculated to assess the severity of metal pollution. The GI values suggest that, in winter, the lake sediments were polluted slightly with Cu (GI=0.66–1.34), Zn (GI=0.59–1.35), Cr (GI=0.49–0.82) and Pb (GI=0.60–0.96), and moderately with Cd (GI=1.03–4.23). The degree of pollution was higher in winter than in summer. By contrast, the degree of pollution was higher in summer than in winter for Hg and As. Correlation analysis can be used to identify factors influencing seasonal variations in heavy metals. The concetrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd were negatively correlated with water temperature and hydrodynamic conditions, but positively correlated with organic matter concentration in the sediments and with a sediment particle size of<63 μm (p<0.01). Meanwhile, Hg and As concentrations were affected by redox state and salinity. Among the metals tested, Hg and Cd posed a more serious pollution risk. 相似文献

Planktonic larvae of six genera of labrid and pomacentrid reef fishes were captured in march 1985 in the eastern Pacific Ocean several hundred kilometers from the nearest reefs. The larvae were identified to genus by fin-ray counts as well as by comparison of their larval otolith morphology with that of known species. The larval otolith morphologies of known species were derived from measurements of the larval otolith embedded within the otoliths of settled juveniles (as delineated by the daily otolith-increment marks corresponding to the late larval period). The body morphology and melanophore patterns of the eastern Pacific labird and pomacentrid larvae closely matched those of congeneric larvae described from other oceans. Growth rates of larvae less than about 70 d old were similar between taxa (from 0.13 to 0.19 mm d-1). After about 70 d in the plankton, labrid larvae grew much more slowly (0.06 mm d-1 in Xyrichtys sp.). Labrid larvae had long larval durations (up to 131 d in Xyrichtys sp.), while the larval lives of the pomacentrids appeared to be shorter and much less variable. Larvae of many different ages occurred within the same water mass, and young cohorts of larvae appeared continuously over the sampling period. Some larvae were as young as 21 d, indicating that reef-fish larvae are capable of rapid long-distance dispersal (at least 18 km d-1). 相似文献

The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis postulates that secondary sexual traits are honest signals of male quality because
steroid hormones (such as corticosteroids and sex steroids), which are supposed to favor the development of secondary sexual
traits, may also have immunosuppressive effects. Certain secondary sexual traits are not only used as mate choice signals
but also play a role as badges of status. In the house sparrow (Passer domesticus), males have a bib of black feathers which is used both as a signal of social status in male-male interactions and by females
when choosing a mate. We investigated the relationships between bib size and cellular immune response in male house sparrows
during and outside the reproductive season. Males with large badges were found to have lower levels of immunocompetence, as
assessed using a T-cell-mediated immunity assay, during the reproductive season, as predicted by the immunocompetence handicap
hypothesis. Conversely, in November, the correlation between badge size and cellular immune response was positive, possibly
reflecting the better access to trophic resources of large-badged dominant males in winter flocks.

The relative scarcity of studies at the intersection of behavioral and population ecology is surprising given the presumed importance of behavior in density-dependent population regulation. Here we tested whether North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) adjust their behavior in response to local population density and whether they use rates of territorial vocalizations in their local neighborhood to assess density. We examined these relationships using 18?years of live trapping and 20?years of behavioral data that were collected across natural variation in local population density. To disentangle the effects of population density on behavior from those due to changes in per capita food abundance or changes in the frequency of antagonistic interactions with neighbors, we also experimentally manipulated population density with long-term food supplementation as well as perceived population density with long-term playbacks of territorial vocalizations. The frequency with which squirrels emitted territorial vocalizations was positively associated with local population density. In contrast, antagonistic physical interactions observed between squirrels and territorial intrusions were rare and the frequency of intrusions was weakly and negatively, not positively, associated with population density. Squirrels experiencing naturally and experimentally high density conditions spent less time in the nest and feeding but more time being vigilant. Similar density-dependent changes in behavior were observed in response to our manipulations of perceived population density, indicating that vocalization rates and not physical interactions or food abundance were the mechanism by which squirrels assessed and responded behaviorally to changes in local density. 相似文献
