Resting eggs of Acartia spp. (presumably A. bifilosa Giesbr.) at densities between 65 and 125 eggs cm-2 were found in sediment off the southern coast of Finland and represent the first observations of dormant calanoid eggs in the Baltic Sea. The highest egg densities were found at sediment depths between 4 and 8 cm. The hatching percentage varied between 0 and 90% in the different sediment layers and at different experimental temperatures (13, 16 and 19°C). Some nauplii emerged from the eggs extracted from sediment layers 9 to 10 cm beneath the surface layer and other nauplii emerged from eggs after 82 d of dark storage at 3°C. Light was not needed to trigger hatching; the nauplii were able to hatch in darkness when the eggs were resuspended in filtered seawater. Indirect evidence suggests that the marked spring peak of Acartia spp. nauplii seen in a monitoring data from the years 1973 to 1984 was derived from benthic eggs and not from spawning. The possible mechanisms for induction of hatching and the adaptive benefits of resting egg production for A. bifilosa are discussed.  相似文献

Copepod resting eggs are abundant in the seabed of many bays and estuaries where they provide a potential source of recruits for growth of planktonic populations. In the northeastern Gulf of Mexico the copepod Centropages hamatus (Lillejeborg) occurs in the water column only during the late fall, winter and early spring. The species produces subitaneous and diapause eggs, and both egg types have been found in the seabed. We determined the longevity of these two egg types to ascertain their potential for contributing to the growth of the planktonic population and for sustaining a persistent egg bank. Eggs were collected from females and incubated in the laboratory under temperature and oxygen conditions chosen to simulate field conditions. The diapause eggs were also exposed to sulfide. The total hatching success of subitaneous eggs in two experiments declined from highs of 78 and 97% to zero after 60 and 90 d of exposure to anoxia. The total hatching success of diapause eggs that were exposed to anoxia for 90 d however was typically greater than 80%. Some diapause eggs hatched after being incubated under anoxia for 437 d. Diapause eggs survived longer at ambient field temperatures when incubated under anoxia (437 d) compared to normoxia (118 d). Exposure to sulfide did not result in greater mortality of diapause eggs compared to anoxia alone. Diapause eggs that were incubated at ambient field temperatures did not hatch when exposed to normoxia until the temperature dropped to <20 °C. The results of this study suggest that C.␣hamatus sustain a short-term reserve of subitaneous eggs in the seabed that provides recruits for the current year's population. The greater longevity of diapause eggs suggests that they sustain the seasonal reappearance of the species year after year in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. However, the contribution of diapause eggs of C. hamatus from the Gulf of Mexico to a persistent egg bank is questionable since hatching ceased after 437 d. We experimentally investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing, deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Intact sediment cores with in situ density and species composition of zooplankton resting eggs and benthic fauna were collected in the northern Bothnian Sea, part of the Baltic Sea. We removed as many M. affinis as possible from the cores and then added different numbers of M. affinis to the cores to generate a range of densities. The cores were exposed to different densities of M. affinis for either 3 or 40 days, after which the hatched zooplankton was registered. One subset of the cores were initially incubated under low temperature (2–3 °C, to prevent hatching) for 37 days (the resting phase), to allow for effects of M. affinis on unhatched resting eggs. These cores were then incubated under higher temperature (13 °C) for 3 days (the hatching phase), to induce hatching and allow for effects on hatching or hatched specimens. In a second subset of cores with the same time and temperature schedule, the M. affinis density was experimentally reduced at the start of the hatching phase, to evaluate the effect of M. affinis during the hatching phase. To a third subset of cores, we immediately initiated the hatching phase, without an experimental resting phase, to evaluate the effects induced during the resting phase. The most common zooplankton species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda), followed by Bosmina longispina maritima (Cladocera). In all cores that were subjected to a resting phase, the numbers of hatched E. affinis were log-linearly negatively related to density of M. affinis. An increase of M. affinis density from 1,000 to 5,000 individuals m−2, normal field densities, reduced the hatching by 60–70%. The negative impact was mainly exerted during the hatching phase, suggesting predation on, burial of or physical injury of hatching nauplii or eggs in a late development stage as likely mechanisms. Also, the number of B. longispina maritima that hatched was reduced by M. affinis during the hatching phase, but no clear relation to density of M. affinis could be identified. The results show that M. affinis can reduce recruitment to zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Such impact by the benthos on resting stages of zooplankton is therefore a potentially significant link between the benthic and pelagic systems. Benthic resting eggs of rotifers, cladocerans and calanoid copepods were studied at two sites with different hydrographical and sediment properties off the SW coast of Finland, the northern Baltic Sea between 1991 and 1993. Vertical distribution of the resting eggs in the sediment was studied down to 10 cm depth, and hatching of the eggs extracted from different 1-cm thick sediment layers was experimentally tested. The larvae of eight mesozooplankton taxa emerged from the eggs: Calanoida (mostlyAcartia bifilosa), cladoceransBosmina spp.,Daphnia spp.,Evadne nordmanni, andPodon spp. (mostlyP. polyphemoides), and rotifersSynchaeta spp.,Keratella spp. andAsplanchna priodonta. Some calanoid and cladoceran eggs hatched after 7 mo storage of the sediment at 3°C. A few calanoid and cladoceran eggs hatched from the 8 to 10 cm deep sediment layer. Their age, estimated by means of137Cs analysis, was ca. 8 to 10 yr. Vertical distribution of the benthic eggs reflected the different sediment structures of the study sites. The eggs of all zooplankton taxa were more stratified in the laminated sediment than in the disturbed sediment. We suggest that the intensity of deep water mixing is the key factor for regulating the vertical distribution and hatching probability of mesozooplankton resting eggs, since it largely determines the stratification of the sedimenting material, distribution of oxygen within the sediment, and the living conditions of benthic animals causing bioturbation.  相似文献

The functional response of the aspects of reproductive success of a southwestern Baltic population of Acartia tonsa (Copepoda: Calanoida) was quantified in the laboratory using wide ranges in temperatures and salinities. Specifically, daily egg production (EP, # female−1 day−1) was determined for 4 or 5 days at 18 different temperatures between 5 and 34°C and the time course and success of hatching were evaluated at 10 different temperatures between 5 and 23°C. The effect of salinity (0 to 34 psu) on egg hatching success was also examined. The highest mean rates of EP were observed between 22 and 23°C (46.8–50.9 eggs female−1 day−1). When studied at 18 psu, hatching success of eggs increased with increasing temperature and was highest (92.2%) at 23°C. No hatching was observed for eggs incubated at low temperatures (≤12°C) that were produced by females acclimated to temperatures ≤10°C indicating a possible thermal threshold between 10.0 and 13.0°C below which only the production of diapause (or low quality) eggs exists in this population. When tested at 18°C, the hatching success of eggs incubated at 15 different salinities increased asymptotically with increasing salinity and was maximal (81.4–84.5%) between 17 and 25 psu. The high reproductive success observed over wide ranges in temperatures and salinities in this Baltic population demonstrates one of the mechanisms responsible for the cosmopolitan distribution of this species within productive, estuarine and marine habitats.  相似文献

Feeding, egg production, hatching success and early naupliar development of Calanus finmarchicus were measured in three north Norwegian fjords during a spring bloom dominated by diatoms and the haptophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii. Majority of the copepod diet consisted of diatoms, mainly Thalassiosira spp. and Chaetoceros spp., with clearance rates up to 10 ml ind−1 h−1 for individual algae species/groups. Egg production rates were high, ranging from ca 40 up to 90 eggs f−1 d−1, with a hatching success of 70–85%, and fast naupliar development through the first non-feeding stages. There was no correlation between the egg or nauplii production and diatom abundance, but the hatching success was slightly negatively correlated with diatom biomass. However, the overall high reproductive rates suggested that the main food items were not harmful for C. finmarchicus reproduction in the area, although direct chemical measurements were not conducted. The high population egg production (>1,20,000 eggs m−2 d−1) indicated that a large part of the annual reproduction took place during the investigation, which stresses the importance of diatom-dominated spring phytoplankton bloom for population recruitment of C. finmarchicus in these northern ecosystems.  相似文献

Resting eggs of four species of calanoid copepods and three species of cladocerans were collected from sediments up to 5cm depth from the Kiel Bay and adjacent waters in the southwestern Baltic Sea during April–May 1994. All but one species of cladoceran was successfully hatched/reared in the laboratory. In the Kiel Bay, egg abundances varied from 1.8x105 to 7.4x105 m-2. Hatching success of copepod eggs collected from all depths was high (49 to 94%), but was 0 to 79% for cladoceran eggs. Darkness did not seem to affect hatching. Eggs found in the 4 to 5 cm layer of sediment were estimated to be about 15 yr old, showing the presence of an egg bank in the Baltic. Formation of resting eggs may be a genetic trait acquired during the ice ages.  相似文献

Egg production and viability in the copepod Temora stylifera (collected in the Bay of Naples, Italy in 1992) were strongly dependent on food type. A flagellate (Isochrysis galbana) diet induced the production of good quality eggs that developed to hatching. By contrast, two diatoms (Chaetoceros curvisetum, Phaeodactylum tricornutum) resulted in poor egg quality, with hatching success as low as 20% of total egg production. With the third diatom tested, Skeletonema costatum, females produced eggs for only 3 to 4 d, after which time they either became sterile or died. These results are discussed in relation to previous findings regarding the impact of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum and the diatom Thalassiosira rotula on the hatching success of T. stylifera eggs. Low egg viability was possibly not due to an absence of remating or a deficiency of some specific essential nutrient required for egg development but to the presence of inhibitory compounds blocking cell division during early copepod embryogenesis. This questions the traditional view that diatoms are an important food item regulating copepod secondary production.  相似文献

Developmental and seasonal changes in egg volume were examined in a population of the amphipod Gammarus insensibilis Stock occurring on the south coast of England, towards its northern limit of distribution. Results showed a marked increase in egg volume during development (2.9 times by Egg Stage V), resulting from water uptake and from the conversion of yolk reserves into structural elements. The maximum rate of increase coincides with the period of organ and limb development. At hatching, after initial rupture of the egg membrane by urosome spines, egg volume increases rapidly over a short period (15 to 20 min) by a further 30% (uptake rate 3.6×10–5 mm3s–1), followed by a post-hatching decrease in juvenile volume. Increase in size at hatching is the result of drinking by embryos, although changes in body-wall permeability may contribute. Females carrying eggs in an advanced stage of development exhibit egg-collecting behaviour. This is seen as an adaptation to an increased likelihood of egg loss with increase in volume of the brood as hatching approaches. Seasonal changes in Stage I (early) egg size are marked in this species, with winter eggs as much as 60% greater in volume than summer eggs. Egg size is inversely related to the temperature during oocyte development. A simple model has been derived to account for the observed seasonal pattern in egg size. The consequences of seasonal variation in egg and juvenile size are considered.  相似文献

Tolerance of calanoid resting eggs from bottom sediment in a manipulated marine enclosure (Svartatjønn, western Norway) to freezing, desiccation and exposure to the insecticide Rotenone was examined in 1989 and 1990, both in situ and in the laboratory. Egg abundances in the sediment were compared before and after draining followed by Rotenone treatment. The drained parts of the basin were exposed to both drying and freezing. A significant decrease in hatching success was found in the drained parts during the study (p<0.05,t-test) and in the deepest parts, which were exposed to Rotenone. No significant difference was found in an intermediate zone around the new water level established by the draining. Both drying (at 20°C) and freezing (at –15°C) caused total mortality of the eggs in laboratory experiments. Laboratory experiments also showed that Rotenone concentrations higher than 0.5 ppm resulted in significantly reduced hatching rates, indicating that resting eggs of calanoids tolerate 20 to 100 times higher Rotenone concentrations than do later ontogenetic stages. The operational procedure (i.e. draining and Rotenone treatment) employed in enclosed ponds used for marine fish fry production will, within a 1-yr cycle, reduce the abundance of resting eggs and therefore the potential for self-recruitment of the zooplankton stocks.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the potential for recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Hatching of resting eggs was induced in the laboratory on sliced and resuspended 1-cm depth-sections of sediment cores, collected at six stations in an archipelago area of the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea. The uppermost 5 cm of the sediment was studied. The most common species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda). Individuals from another copepod genus, Acartia, hatched in significant numbers only in the cores from two stations with low amphipod abundance. Cores from stations with high amphipod densities showed a deeper distribution of emerging E. affinis nauplii compared with stations with few amphipods; the oxidised sediment layer was also deeper at high M. affinis densities than at low. Total (0 to 5 cm strata pooled) number of hatched E. affinis nauplii was independent of amphipod density. This indicates that the effect of M. affinis on E. affinis eggs involves deeper burial due to bioturbation, rather than predation. Decreased benthic recruitment of zooplankton at localities with high M. affinis density is suggested, since more deeply positioned eggs are less likely to hatch. When hatching was induced in intact, non-sliced cores from one station, the number of E. affinis nauplii that hatched was on average 43% of the number that hatched in the upper centimetre of the sliced cores from the same station. This fraction (43%), if applied to the other stations, implied a potential for benthic recruitment of up to 80 000 ind m−2 for E. affinis. Experiments were conducted to examine the morphology and hatching success of eggs, either spawned by freshly caught planktonic copepods or recovered from bottom sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Collections were made between August 1992 and September 1995. Eggs of nine species were described and these differed in their diameter, color and surface attributes. Three types of eggs were distinguished: subitaneous, diapause, and delayed-hatching. Three species, Labidocera aestiva Wheeler, Acartia tonsa Dana, and Centropages velificatus (Oliveira) produced only subitaneous eggs. Hatching success varied greatly among these species. Two species, Labidocera mirabilis Fleminger and Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) produced diapause eggs and subitaneous eggs. The length of the refractory phase of the diapause eggs differed greatly both within and between these two species. A third type of dormant egg, delayed-hatching, was recognized in Labidocera scotti Giesbrecht and Pontella meadi Wheeler. The existence of delayed-hatching eggs may be an adaptive response of subtropical species to less seasonal fluctuation. Based upon morphological characteristics of the eggs and rearing of nauplii to an identifiable stage, benthic dormant eggs of eight species of calanoid copepods were also identified. Laboratory experiments were conducted to differentiate between factors controlling the hatching success of copepod eggs. Factors that could affect viability of eggs; viz food quality, female condition and external factors were investigated. In a series of experiments the copepod Acartia tonsa Dana was fed several different diets while egg production and hatching success were monitored. The diet was analysed for fatty acid content as an indicator of food quality. Both egg production and hatching were found to be affected by the nutritional quality of the food. Hatching was also highly dependent on female fertility. External effects were tested by exposing eggs to diatom extracts. Negative effects were only evident at high extract concentrations, but disappeared when aeration was supplied to the solution. Oxygen measurements showed that failure to hatch was due to hypoxia in the extracts. No inhibitory or toxic effects of diatom cell components on hatching could be found.  相似文献

Although polyclads are amongst the most structurally simple of the triploblastic metazoans, they adopt a wide range of reproductive strategies. Parental care behaviour in this group is yet to be quantified for any species. We assessed the significance of brooding behaviour to the reproductive success of two free-living marine flatworms. Echinoplana celerrima and Stylochus pygmaeus were collected from the field and placed in pairs in containers of filtered seawater where they laid batches of eggs. Both parents were then removed from half of the containers and the brooding behaviour and hatching success of eggs were quantified. There were interspecific differences in brooding behaviour. Egg masses were covered by one E. celerrima parent for 12 ± 2% of time, whereas egg masses of S. pygmaeus were covered by one or both parents simultaneously for 85 ± 8% of time. Egg batches were abandoned by both species immediately prior to the onset of hatching (10–12 days). Hatching success was generally high (~90%) and brooding did not enhance the hatching success of eggs. We assessed the significance of parental care to hatching success of E. celerrima egg masses in the presence of three potential egg predators; in the presence of other organisms. E. celerrima devoted less time to brooding; however, hatching success was not affected. The amount of time spent brooding eggs differed greatly between the two polyclad species but was not essential to their reproductive success under benign conditions. Parental care may be of adaptive value under more stressful environmental conditions commonly experienced in estuarine environments such as lowered salinity, increased hypoxia or turbidity. Covering egg batches may play an additional role of advertising sexual status and a willingness to care for eggs.  相似文献

From August 2000 to June 2001, seven egg-carrying female lobster (Homarus americanus) from the Îles de la Madeleine population (Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada) were held under a simulated seasonal temperature cycle to monitor egg development from extrusion to hatching. For the first time, changes in the yolk components (total lipids and major lipid classes, total proteins) and embryo growth of single eggs were monitored separately over the entire development period. Under the controlled temperature conditions, egg development proceeded in three phases. (1) Autumn, from extrusion to early December, was marked by a rapid increase in the Perkinss eye index and rapid declines in yolk total proteins and triacylglycerols (TAG). Embryo daily growth rate was estimated between 1 and 2 µg proteins day–1. (2) Winter, from late December to early April (temperature stable at ca. 1°C) was characterized by a stationary phase in the evolution of the eye index and yolk lipid use, and embryo growth slowed significantly. (3) Spring, from late April to hatching in June was the period with the most rapid changes in yolk TAG and embryo growth rates >6 µg proteins day–1 were recorded. Almost 65% of the live biomass (total proteins) of the hatching larvae was accumulated during the last few weeks of development. An index of embryo growth efficiency was estimated as the slope of the relationship between embryo total proteins and yolk TAG during egg development. A relationship was found between the initial mean egg dry weight and the embryo growth efficiency index suggesting that under the same experimental conditions bigger eggs used yolk lipids more efficiently and sustained faster embryonic growth than smaller eggs. Laboratory studies on the reproductive cycle of the planktonic copepod Temora stylifera, collected from the Gulf of Naples between October 1987 and March 1988, showed that females oscillated between a light and dark gonadal condition. Histological preparations indicated that the dark condition corresponded to a ripe stage of oogenesis as compared to the light or unripe maturation state of primary oocytes. The number of eggs released within 24 h was strongly dependent on the reproductive status of the female at the time of incubation. Light unfed females rarely reverted to a dark or ripe condition and egg deposition in such cases was almost always zero. Dark females produced eggs within 24 h under all experimental food conditions, reverting from dark to light soon after egg deposition. Successively, the length of the interclutch period was strongly dependent on the type of food present. A high percentage of infertile eggs was almost always present. We suggest that short-term studies, not taking into consideration the condition of gonads at the time of incubation, will underestimate potential egg production rates. Females maintained for longer than three or four days produced mainly infertile eggs. After remating, females reinitiated the production of fertile eggs but egg viabilities never reached 100% hatching success, indicating poor efficiency in the fertilization of mature oocytes. Fecundity, egg viability and fecal pellet production are reported for Acartia clausi females collected in the Bay of Naples, Italy, from April to October 1992 and fed either with a diatom (Thalassiosira rotula) or dinoflagellate (Prorocentrum minimum) diet, at food saturated conditions. The diatom diet significantly reduced both egg and fecal pellet production as well as hatching success. Blockage of egg development occurred with both axenic and non-axenic cultures of T. rotula, suggesting that inhibitors were provided by the diatoms and not by the bacteria associated with diatom cultures. Low hatching success was also artificially induced by exposing newly spawned A. clausi eggs to high concentrations of diatom extracts, indicating the presence of deleterious, inhibitory compounds blocking copepod embryogenesis. Fecundity and hatching success diminished significantly with female age. In contrast, female longevity was not significantly modified by food type. The presence of males did not significantly alter fecundity or egg viability. Females continued to produce viable eggs throughout the period of incubation, with and without males, in both food conditions, indicating that remating is infrequent and not necessary to sustain viable egg production in this species. The succession in low and high population densities may therefore be the outcome of variations in survival rates of eggs, rather than reproductive protential perse; such variations may strongly depend on the adult copepod diet.  相似文献

Sclerocrangon boreas is uncommon among marine coastal carideans in having a non-dispersing, abbreviated (2-stage) larval phase. We investigated the implications of this strategy in terms of fecundity, offspring provisioning and brood care in S. boreas from the St. Lawrence Gulf and Estuary in 2009–2010. Fecundity scaled positively to female body size but was low due to the production of large, lipid-rich eggs. Offspring size at all stages of development was positively related to female size. Larval traits and lipid dynamics indicate obligatory lecithotrophic development from hatching to juvenile. The larva becomes a juvenile on the mother and remains associated with her for sometime after. The co-occurrence of early egg stages among many juveniles in some clutches raises the possibility that maternal care of juveniles includes the provisioning of trophic eggs or eggs reclaimed from other females.  相似文献

The lipid/fatty acid composition of marine fish eggs and larvae is linked with buoyancy regulation, but our understanding of such processes is largely restricted to species with pelagic eggs. In this study, we examined developmental changes in the lipid/fatty acids of eggs and embryos of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), a species that spawns demersal eggs along coastal shelf edges, but as larvae must make a rapid transition to the upper reaches of the water column. Adult Pacific cod were collected in the Gulf of Alaska during the spawning season and eggs of two females were artificially fertilized with sperm from three males for each female. The eggs were subsequently reared in the laboratory to determine (1) how lipids/fatty acids were catabolized during egg and larval development, and (2) whether lipid/fatty acid catabolism had measurable effects on egg/embryo density. Eggs incubated at 4°C began hatching after 3-weeks and continued to hatch over a 10-day period, during which there was a distinct shift in lipid classes (phospholipids (PL), triacyglycerols (TAG), and sterols (ST)) and essential fatty acids (EFAs: 22:6n-3 (DHA), 20:5n-3 (EPA), and 20:4n-6 (AA)). In the egg stage, total lipid content steadily decreased during the first 60% of development, but just prior to hatch we observed an unexpected 2–3-fold lipid increase (~6–9 μg individual−1) and a significant drop in egg density. The increase in lipids was largely driven by PL, with evidence of long-chained fatty acid synthesis. Late-hatching larvae had progressively decreasing lipid and fatty acid reserves, suggesting a shift from lipogenesis to lipid catabolism with continued larval development. Egg density measures suggest that lipid/fatty acid composition is linked to buoyancy regulation as larvae shift from a demersal to a pelagic existence following hatch. The biochemical pathway by which Pacific cod are apparently able to synthesize EFAs is unknown, therefore representing a remarkable finding meriting further investigation.  相似文献

Contrary to Bateman’s principle, polyandry appears to be a common female mating strategy. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the evolution of polyandry. It is assumed that females gain either material or genetic benefits from multiple matings, or that they are coerced into mating by males. In water striders, mating is generally assumed to be costly to females, and they are thought to mate for reasons of convenience, adjusting their resistance to mating according to male harassment. Here, we tested the effect of number of matings (with the same male) and number of partners on female fitness in a water strider Aquarius paludum. In the first experiment, we regulated the time females spent with a male and found that females’ egg production increased with multiple matings up to a point. The result supports the existence of an optimal female mating frequency. In the second experiment, we tested how polyandry affects the number of eggs laid and egg hatching success. We conducted three different trials: females mated four times with either a single male, two different males, or with four different males. Females that mated with four different males laid the lowest number of eggs and had the lowest egg hatching success, suggesting that polyandry reduces females’ egg production and egg hatching success in A. paludum. We conclude that A. paludum females probably gain material benefits from mating but no genetic benefits were found in this study.  相似文献
