Prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 10 p in a twin pregnancy

A twin pregnancy with trisomy 10 p due to a paternal 10;12 translocation is reported. The prenatal diagnosis steps followed in twin pregnancies are reviewed and the concordant features of trisomy 10 p seen in both fetuses confirm previous reports on the clinical features of this chromosomal defect.     

Maternal uniparental isodisomy 10 and mosaicism for an additional marker chromosome derived from the paternal chromosome 10 in a fetus

An Erratum has been published for this article in Prenatal Diagnosis 22(11) 2002: 1056. We report a case of maternal isodisomy 10 combined with mosaic partial trisomy 10 (p12.31-q11.1). Chromosome examinations from a CVS sample showed a karyotype 47,XY,+mar/46,XY. The additional marker chromosome which was present in 6/25 interphase nuclei was shown by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to have been derived from a pericentromeric segment of chromosome 10. DNA analysis was performed from umbilical cord blood from the fetus after termination of the pregnancy at 18 weeks. The results showed that the two structurally normal chromosomes 10 were both of maternal origin, whereas the marker chromosome derived from the father. Autopsy of the fetus revealed hypoplasia of heart, liver, kidneys and suprarenal glands, but, apart from a right bifid ureter, no structural organ abnormalities. This fetus represents the second reported instance of a maternal uniparental disomy (UPD) 10. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Environmental audits as a policy of state: 10 years of experience in Mexico

The Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente or PROFEPA was created to assist in the enforcement of Mexico's environmental legislation. The agency uses two strategies to enforce legislation: command–control, which includes inspections and penalties, and voluntary environmental audits. This paper analyses data generated during the first decade of administration of the voluntary program, the National Program of Environmental Audits (PNAA). In 2764 audits, Mexican companies invested US$2.155 billon, generating important investments to control pollution, independent of macroeconomic parameters and a market related to the economic transition of Mexico. At the same time, it produced positive consequences for the environment. The PNAA lost popularity among large companies until it was restructured in 2001, providing less industrial risk, but a stronger environmental orientation. With these changes, the PNAA attracted new industries, permitted better administration, and provided opportunities for companies and the government to measure the consequences of their activities on the environment. Risks and opportunities for the PNAA are discussed. Preliminary improvements concerning environment and workers safety are given.
