On 15 dates, 5000 measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) were made in downtown commercial settings in four California towns and cities (San Francisco, Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Los Angeles), using personal exposure monitoring (PEM) instruments. Altogether, 588 different commercial settings were visited, and indoor and outdoor locations were sampled at each setting. On 11 surveys, two CO PEM's were carried about 0.15–6 m apart, giving 1706 pairs of observations that showed good agreement: the correlation coefficient was r = 0.97 or greater, and the average difference was less than 1 ppm (μL/L) by volume. Of 210 indoor settings (excluding parking garages), 204 (97.1%) had average CO concentrations less than 9 ppm (μL/L); of 368 outdoor settings, 356 (96.7%) had average CO concentrations less than 9 ppm (μL/L). For a given date and commercial setting, CO concentrations were found to be relatively stable over time, permitting levels to be characterized by making only brief visits to each setting. The data indicate that most commercial settings experience CO concentrations above zero indoors, because CO tends to seep into buildings from vehicular emissions outside. Levels in these locations usually are not above 5 ppm (μL/L) and seldom are higher than the U.S. health-related ambient air quality standards for CO. However, indoor garages and buildings with attached indoor parking areas are exceptions and can experience relatively high CO concentrations.  相似文献

This paper presents an assessment of air quality of the city Eskişehir, located 230 km southwest to the capital of Turkey. Only five of the major air pollutants, most studied worldwide and available for the region, were considered for the assessment. Available sulphur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and non-methane volatile organic carbons (NMVOCs) data from local emission inventory studies provided relative source contributions of the selected pollutants to the region. The contributions of these typical pollution parameters, selected for characterizing such an urban atmosphere, were compared with the data established for other cities in the nation and world countries. Additionally, regional ambient SO2 and PM concentrations, determined by semi-automatic monitoring at two sites, were gathered from the National Ambient Air Monitoring Network (NAAMN). Regional data for ambient NO2 (as a precursor of ozone as VOCs) and ozone concentrations, through the application of the passive sampling method, were provided by the still ongoing local air quality monitoring studies conducted at six different sites, as representatives of either the traffic-dense-, or coal/natural gas burning residential-, or industrial/rural-localities of the city. Passively sampled ozone data at a single rural site were also verified with the data from a continuous automatic ozone monitoring system located at that site. Effects of variations in seasonal-activities, newly established railway system, and switching to natural gas usage on the temporal changes of air quality were all considered for the assessment. Based on the comparisons with the national [AQCR (Air Quality Control Regulation). Ministry of Environment (MOE), Ankara. Official Newspaper 19269; 1986.] and a number of international [WHO (World Health Organization). Guidelines for Air Quality. Geneva; 2000. This paper presents the outcome of research conducted in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Analysis of recorded meteorological elements shows that the atmosphere of the area favors the accumulation of air pollutants. Dustfall rates were measured at 22 stations in different districts. High rates of dustfall were found in all districts, with maximum recorded values in central urban and industrial districts. Collected samples were analyzed to determine the causes of these excessive precipitations. Suspended particulate matter and other pollutants were found to exceed air quality standards set to meet environmental requirements. Carbon monoxide was found to exceed the air quality standard of 9 μL/L. Concentrations of photochemical oxidants indicated the possibility of Los Angeles-type photochemical smog formation. Geographic distribution of pollutant concentrations and chemical constituents of particulates were found to be influenced by both manmade and natural causes. Results are discussed and several conclusions are given.  相似文献

A pilot field study was conducted with nine members of the general public to measure carbon monoxide exposure using personal monitors. The principal study objectives were to design and evaluate the research protocol and the instrumentation performance for application to the conduct of a large-scale personal monitoring program. Integrated carbon monoxide exposure was monitored and recorded according to type of activity such as “commuting” or “at work” for approximately 45 days by each subject. All subjects except one were able to handle both the equipment and data recording requirements with no significant problems. Actual data recording responsibilities consumed less than 10 min daily. The data consisted of 355 person-days each over 6-h duration, and weekdays only, from which 8-h average personal exposure levels could be computed. The 9 ppm (μL/L) ambient air quality standard was exceeded on 22 person-days. Elevated carbon monoxide concentrations during the commuting activity were frequently associated with the exceedences.  相似文献

Regression models have been constructed to examine effects of oxidant and acid precipitation air pollutants and regional factors on soybean yield. Although regional factors provide most of the explanatory power, effects of oxidants and acid precipitation are statistically significant. These regressions suggest that controlling oxidant air pollution may produce greater benefit than controlling acid precipitation. Specifically, controlling pH to 5.2 or 5.6 would result in a national-level increase in soybean yield of ~ 1%. In comparison, if oxidant concentrations were controlled to 40 or 25 ppb (nL/L), a national-level increase of 4%–9% is predicted. Simultaneous control of both pollutants (i.e., pH = 5.6, oxidant = 25 ppb (nL/L) would result in a national-level benefit of ~ 10%. Regression models and field generated dose-response functions predict similar results. Before the methods developed in this paper can be used for policy analysis, data and sources of estimate uncertainty need to be more closely examined.  相似文献

Current air quality simulation models (AQSM) based on the continuity equation employ the gradient transport approximation and neglect the effect of turbulent fluctuation on chemical reactions. The implications of these approximations are examined, and an alternative statistical, Lagrangian approach applicable to nonreactive pollutants is also discussed.Practically, the working equations of AQSMs are derived from either the Gaussian principle or the conservation-of-mass principles, in conjunction with the semi-empirical parameterizatio of meteorological and photochemical aspects of the problem. The main features of the treatment of the meteorology and current concepts of the photochemical smog mechanism are examined. Some applications of AQMSs, e.g., predictions of future trends of urban carbon monoxide concentrations and photochemical smog, derivation of the relationship between ambient oxidant levels and precursor emission, and estimation of hydrocarbon reactivity for photochemical smog formation, are presented.  相似文献

For buildings in which the emissions from people is the main source of pollution, the number of people is the limiting factor for air ventilation. When such buildings are not used at full capacity, the ventilation, and consequently the energy consumption, is unnecessarily high. A great deal of the energy could be saved if the ventilation system could be developed to adjust the air flow to the actual requirements. One possible system would allow the amount of CO2 in the exhaust air to control the ventilation rate. To study if this principle is practicable and economic, a CO2 indicator has been installed in an office building in Helsinki. The mixture of exterior air and recirculated air is adjusted so that the amount of CO2 during working hours is kept on ca 700 ppm (μL/L). The equipment was used during winter 1981-82, and the variation of CO2 and the exterior air flow has been registered. The proportion of CO2 has also been measured locally in order to study occasional variations that may occur. The proportion of other pollutants in the room air has been studied simultaneously with a gas chromatograph. Different types of CO2 indicators were used to study the efficiency of the control system. The successful results indicate that the system can be used in new constructions, as well as in existing buildings.  相似文献

Oxidants of significance to human health include ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and peroxyacetylnitrate. All of these compounds are involved in complex photochemical reactions which makes quantification and prediction of their individual health effects difficult. Ozone causes trauma to lung tissues and interferes with enzyme systems in the lungs and other tissues causing a broad range of symptoms. Measurable health impacts can occur at concentrations as low as 390 μg/m3. Acute effects of ozone exposure are reversible at normal urban concentrations (80–120 μg/m3). A special problem of concern, however, is increased susceptibility to infectious diseases contracted through the lungs. Nitrogen dioxide also causes trauma to lung tissues and interferes with enzyme systems. Measurable impacts can occur at concentrations as low as 100 μg/m3, but recovery is rapid and it is not known whether repeated exposures at this level have cumulative effects or predispose the lungs to permanent damage. Chronic exposure of laboratory animals to higher nitrogen dioxide levels can cause emphysema-like conditions and reduction in resistance to respiratory infection. Epidemiological studies of children in houses with gas stoves confirm the finding of reduced resistance to respiratory infection. The U.S. EPA estimates that health effects may occur in young children exposed to concentrations in excess of 280 to 560 μg/m3 one-hour average. These concentrations occur routinely in houses having gas stoves. Peroxyacetylnitrate is a powerful eye irritant in photochemical smog. Other health effects are similar to those of ozone, but less important because of the relatively low concentrations of this pollutant compared to other oxidants.  相似文献

We have investigated the filtering effects of three types of air control systems of enclosed structures on viable particles in the ambient air. Aspergillus fumigatus and other thermophilic organisms were used as monitors for viable particles. The indoor concentrations of viable particles were found to be affected by building design and the use of conventional mechanical air systems. Viable particles of approximately 4.0 μm and greater in aerodynamic diameter were filtered from the air while respirable size particles less than 4.0 μm were not filtered as well. There was evidence of growth of viable particles within the mechanical air systems. Conventional air control systems may not be adequate for the control of viable particle contamination of the indoor environment without modifications and proper maintenance.  相似文献

This study was performed to investigate the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 inside trains and platforms on subway lines 1, 2, 4 and 5 in Seoul, KOREA. PM10, PM2.5, carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) were monitored using real-time monitoring instruments in the afternoons (between 13:00 and 16:00). The concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 inside trains were significantly higher than those measured on platforms and in ambient air reported by the Korea Ministry of Environment (Korea MOE). This study found that PM10 levels inside subway lines 1, 2 and 4 exceeded the Korea indoor air quality (Korea IAQ) standard of 150 μg/m3. The average percentage that exceeded the PM10 standard was 83.3% on line 1, 37.9% on line 2 and 63.1% on line 4, respectively. PM2.5 concentration ranged from 77.7 μg/m3 to 158.2 μg/m3, which were found to be much higher than the ambient air PM2.5 standard promulgated by United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) (24 h arithmetic mean: 65 μg/m3). The reason for interior PM10 and PM2.5 being higher than those on platforms is due to subway trains in Korea not having mechanical ventilation systems to supply fresh air inside the train. This assumption was supported by the CO2 concentration results monitored in tube of subway that ranged from 1153 ppm to 3377 ppm. The percentage of PM2.5 in PM10 was 86.2% on platforms, 81.7% inside trains, 80.2% underground and 90.2% at ground track. These results indicated that fine particles (PM2.5) accounted for most of PM10 and polluted subway air. GLM statistical analysis indicated that two factors related to monitoring locations (underground and ground or inside trains and on platforms) significantly influence PM10 (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.230) and PM2.5 concentrations (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.172). Correlation analysis indicated that PM10, PM2.5, CO2 and CO were significantly correlated at p < 0.01 although correlation coefficients were different. The highest coefficient was 0.884 for the relationship between PM10 and PM2.5.  相似文献

Air pollution is a major environmental problem in urban areas worldwide. Delhi, the capital city of India, is no exception to the universal pattern of deteriorating urban air quality with concentration of pollutants being well above the recommended WHO levels. The magnitude and urgency of the problem as a global environmental issue needs a systematic understanding of the potential causes of pollution and their contribution to air quality. In the present study, ambient air quality data (1987–2006) of SO2, NO2, SPM, and RSPM were analyzed to asses the changing air quality in the study area and to evaluate the effect of measures taken to control it. The primary data were collected from 1,583 households to examine the relationship between outdoor and indoor pollution level. Based on the data, the current study concludes that despite the implementation of different pollution-controlling measures, the pollutants, especially the particulate pollutants, were well above the standard limits set by CPCB. Integration between technological and social approach of urban planning is required to mitigate and manage urban environmental problems in sustainable manner.  相似文献

In recent years, scientist have come to realize that contaminated air inside buildings is a major route of human exposure to certain air pollutants. While scientific interest in the problem continues to grow, efforts to measure indoor pollution concentrations, define exposure levels, and estimate health risks remain in their infancy. Within this arena, policymakers must deal with the question of how best to protect public health and safety in the face of incomplete and often contradictory information. In the past, official response to environmental pollution has traditionally taken the form of “control by regulation.” However, creation of a regulatory framework for indoor air quality poses special policy issues that suggest the need to explore alternative modes of intervention. Ambient outdoor air is a public good, in the sense that enjoyment by one individual in no way detracts from use or enjoyment by others. Indoor air, on the other hand, is not a public good, especially in private residences. Costs and benefits of maintaining adequate indoor air quality are internalized within households, suggesting the possibility of a private demand for clean indoor air. Promulgation of indoor air quality standards and other regulations must confront the fact that individuals are already making decisions about their own air quality. Regulations might or might not improve these decisions. Development of effective and reasonable policy requires an appreciation of the scope for private action and consideration of the likelihood that public intervention will foster improved private choices. Among the logical and relatively inexpensive modes of intervention are public information programs, development of simple warning devices, and product testing and labeling.  相似文献

Estimating risks of air pollution damage to agricultural crops requires identifying crop location and size, likely doses, models for translating dose to response, and measures of response appropriate for economic analysis. Assessment of risk requires compatible data sets for each of these variables. Analysis of air pollution mixtures suggests that oxidant crop damage is caused by three compounds: ozone, nitrogen oxides, and peroxyacetylnitrates. The phytotoxicity of ozone, the most prevalent photochemical oxidant, has been studied more extensively than the other two oxidants, and its effects on vegetation are best understood. Response of vegetation to air pollutants was first characterized by foliar or visible injury. Subsequent research indicated that foliar injury did not translate directly into reduced plant growth or yield, which can be measured. Response to air pollutants may be influenced by physical, biological, and environmental factors. Inherent genetic resistance is probably the most important single factor affecting plant response, although environmental factors influencing stomatal aperture may also be important. For several crops open-top chamber studies and cross sectional analyses of field data provide adequate information to develop dose-response functions. All of these studies have both strengths and weaknesses. Although a number of different models exist for selected crops, there is no single biological or statistical criterion which identifies the best or most accurate model.  相似文献

The air quality in a newly built preschool was investigated in a longitudinal study. Typical air contaminants emanating from building materials were determined, their variation over time (0–18 months) was measured, and the influence of the ventilation system (81%–91% recirculation of return air) on contaminant concentrations was studied. Volatile organic compounds were sampled by adsorption on porous polymer, analysed by a GC/FID system, and identified by MS. A spatial build-up in concentration (ppb or μg/m3 levels) is evident for all the organic compounds, as well as for CO2, from the outdoor air, through the ventilation system, and through the rooms to the exhaust air. The longitudinal comparison over time shows that all the organic compounds decline in concentration mainly within the first 6 months of occupancy: 1-butanol 4–14 times, toluene and pentanal + hexanal 2–4 times, while formaldehyde remained at a constant low level of 90 ppb (110 μg/m3). It is difficult to believe that the problems of poor air quality in 100 preschools in Stockholm are caused by the organic compounds alone unless interactions occur. A preschool building needs to be gassed off during the first 6 months after its construction with no recirculation of return air allowed (outdoor air rate approx 4–5 ach). During at least 1–2 additional years, it is desired that the recirculation rate of return air is restricted, perhaps to 50%.  相似文献

A complete assessment of the health effects of diesel emissions must take into account the possible chemical transformations (and associated biological impacts) of particulate organic matter (POM) due to reactions with the many gaseous copollutants which have now been unambiguously demonstrated to be present in atmospheres burdened by photochemical air pollution. These copollutants include the “trace” species, nitric (HNO3) and nitrous (HONO) acids, the nitrate radical (NO3), formaldehyde (H2CO) and formic acid (HCOOH), as well as the criteria pollutants, ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Techniques for establishing the atmospheric concentrations of the trace pollutants (and their spatial and temporal variations) are briefly described, and we present results of investigations into the reactions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) coated on filters and exposed to ambient concentrations of O3 and NO2. Environmental health implications of these results are discussed and include the potential for sampling “artifacts” and their possible effects on the correlation (or lack thereof) between ambient PAH levels and urban lung cancer rates, as well as the problems associated with understanding the appropriate POM “dose” to be employed in animal testing and assessments of impacts on human health.  相似文献

Comparative studies of the effects of various air pollutants on lung collagen biosynthesis have been performed. A hitherto unexpected synergism between the oxidant air pollutants ozone or nitrogen dioxide and a respirable-sized aerosol of ammonium sulfate was observed during controlled exposures of rats to these substances. In an assay system, measuring collagen biosynthesis by lung minces prepared from rats exposed for 1 week to either filtered air or to these pollutants gases, dose-response curves to either O3 or NO2 are altered in the presence of 5 mg/m3 of (NH4)2SO4 aerosol. These observations may have broad implications for the appropriate evaluation of laboratory data in the setting of ambient air quality standards and/or the setting of threshold limit values for maintenance of occupational health and safety.

A standardized questionnaire was used in a two-year follow-up study to test the effectiveness of non-regulatory recommendations to improve indoor air quality of 103 ice arenas in Finland. In addition, the performance of a state-of-the-art emission control technology (ECT) on propane-fueled resurfacers was evaluated by measuring the one-week average nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration in a small sample of arenas. The number of retrofitted ECT on propane-fueled resurfacers increased from 6 to 37 (8% to 37% of ice arenas) and the number of electric resurfacers from 7 to 9 (both 9% of arenas) in 1994–1996. At the same time, the prevalence of inadequate ventilation increased among the most susceptible small arenas (volume <30 000 m3) from 11 (31%) to 19 (38%). Combustion-powered resurfacers (88%) and inadequate ventilation (24%) were prevalent also among the 17 new arenas built in 1994–1996. ECT resurfacers significantly decreased the mean indoor NO2 concentration of eleven arenas from 650 μg/m3 to 147 μg/m3. Thus, retrofitting resurfacers with ECT seems to be a feasible mitigation option to improve indoor air quality in ice arenas, but the ultimate solution is an electric ice resurfacer. Non-regulatory recommendations seem to be partially effective in abatement against the air quality problems, but additional regulatory measures are needed for full compliance in all arenas.  相似文献
