Predatory arthropods are attracted to infochemicals emitted by their herbivore prey or by the prey’s host plants. We studied such a tritrophic system measuring the olfactory responses of three potter wasp species (Symmorphus murarius, Symmorphus gracilis, Discoelius zonalis, Hymenoptera: Eumeninae) to salicylaldehyde, sequestered as a defence compound by Chrysomela leaf beetle larvae when feeding on Salicaceae, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by aspen (Populus tremula, Salicaceae). In electroantennographic recordings (EAG), the highly specialized S. murarius that almost exclusively feeds on larvae of Salicaceae-feeding Chrysomela species was more sensitive to salicylaldehyde than the less specialized S. gracilis, feeding on such Chrysomela species but also weevil larvae. In contrast the related D. zonalis, foraging for microlepidoptera caterpillars on various host plants, did not respond at all. Furthermore, the three wasp species responded differently to aspen VOCs in GC–MS/EAD measurements. These results indicate that the sense of smell of predatory potter wasps differs for prey and plant volatiles among related wasp species according to their degree of host specialization. The considerable differences in salicylaldehyde perception suggest that its originally defensive function has backfired as it is used by specialist potter wasps for prey location. This is an important clue on adaptive mechanisms of the highest trophic level of the well-studied evolutionary arms race among Chrysomela leaf beetles, their host plants and their enemies.  相似文献

The forest vegetation simulator (FVS) model was calibrated for use in Ontario, Canada, to predict the growth of forest stands. Using data from permanent sample plots originating from different regions of Ontario, new models were derived for dbh growth rate, survival rate, stem height and species group density index for large trees and height and dbh growth rate for small trees. The dataset included black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) for the boreal region, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), white pine (Pinus strobus L.), red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region, and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) for both regions. These new models were validated against an independent dataset that consisted of permanent sample plots located in Quebec. The new models predicted biologically consistent growth patterns whereas some of the original models from the Lake States version of FVS occasionally did not. The new models also fitted the calibration (Ontario) data better than the original FVS models. The validation against independent data from Quebec showed that the new models generally had a lower prediction error than the original FVS models.  相似文献

Abstract:  It has been suggested that transgenics and vertebrate cloning have a role to play in conservation. Now is the time to evaluate their risks and benefits, before these technologies are widely implemented in our field. Direct risks of transgenics include escape and introgression of transgenes into wild populations; weedy invasion by transgenic organisms; toxicity or pathogenicity of engineered organisms and their products; and human error in the field testing and tracking of transgenic organisms. Indirect risks include environmental effects of increased herbicide use; the danger that engineered organisms may aid the development of bioweapons; the likelihood that gene patenting will lead to the privatization of natural resources; and the diversion of support from less glamorous forms of conservation. Formal risk assessments are commonly used to evaluate transgenic procedures, but our incomplete understanding of both ecosystem processes and the action of transgenes renders most of these assessments scientifically and socially unjustified. Nevertheless, a few, low-risk applications of transgenics may be possible: for example, "super-sterile" ornamental cultivars. Vertebrate cloning poses little risk to the environment, but it can consume scarce conservation resources, and its chances of success in preserving species seem poor. To date, the conservation benefits of transgenics and vertebrate cloning remain entirely theoretical, but many of the risks are known and documented. Conservation biologists should devote their research and energies to the established methods of conservation, none of which require transgenics or vertebrate cloning.  相似文献

Summary. Coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis of the Porapak Q-captured volatiles from the bark of trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides Michx., revealed four compounds that consistently elicited antennal responses by mountain pine beetles (MPBs), Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins. One of these, 1-hexanol, disrupted the capture of MPBs in multiple-funnel traps baited with the aggregation pheromones trans-verbenol and exo-brevicomin and the host kairomone myrcene, a blend of semiochemicals that mediates the secondary attraction response in which beetles mass attack and kill living pines. The other three EAD-active aspen bark volatiles, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and nonanal, were inactive alone, but in binary and ternary combinations contributed to a disruptive effect in an additive and redundant manner when all four aspen bark volatiles were tested in all possible binary and ternary blends. The best ternary blend and the quarternary blend achieved ≥ 80% disruption. The quarternary blend enhanced the disruptive effect of the antiaggregation pheromone verbenone in traps, raising the disruptive effect to 98%, and also enhanced the inhibition of attack on attractant-baited lodgepole pines. This is the first demonstration of specific compounds from the bark of angiosperm trees that disrupt the secondary attraction response of sympatric coniferophagous bark beetles. The results support the hypothesis that such bark beetles are adapted to recognize and avoid non-host angiosperm trees by responding to a broad spectrum of volatiles that can act in various blends with equal effect. Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a potential biocontrol agent of the rice-field weed Polygonum orientale L. (Polygonaceae). The volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles from undamaged and mechanically damaged plants, and from plants 12- and 36-h following continuous feeding of female G. placida adults and 2nd instar larvae were identified and quantified by GC–MS and GC-FID analyses. Twenty-four and 21 compounds were identified in volatiles of undamaged and insect feeding plants, respectively; whereas 22 compounds were detected in volatiles of mechanically damaged plants. Decanal and 1-dodecanol were unique to undamaged plants, and linalool was detected in volatiles of undamaged and mechanically damaged plants, but not in volatiles of insect damaged plants. However, the beetles are not attracted by none of these volatile components, when tested individually in Y-shaped glass tube olfactometer bioassays. In all plants, methyl jasmonate was predominant. 1-Undecanol was the least amount in undamaged plants, and plants 12-h after feeding by G. placida adults and larvae; whereas 1-tridecanol was the least abundant in plants 36-h after feeding by G. placida adults and larvae, and mechanically damaged plants. The beetles showed significant preference to the whole volatile blends from plants 12-h after feeding by larvae and plants 36-h after feeding by either larvae or adults compared to those of undamaged plants. Further, G. placida responded to individual synthetic compounds, 3-hexanol, 1-octen-3-ol, nonanal, and geraniol at 7, 1.38, 3.75 and 4.5 µg/25 µL CH2Cl2, respectively, and provide a basis for attraction of the potential biocontrol agent in the field.  相似文献

Bioassays with a non-target slug (Deroceras spp.) and chemical analyses were conducted using leaf tissue from already existing genetically modified insect-resistant aspen trees to examine whether genetic modifications to produce Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins could affect plant phytochemistry, which in turn might influence plant–herbivore interactions. Three major patterns emerged. First, two independent modifications for Bt resistance affected the phytochemical profiles of leaves such that both were different from the isogenic wild-type (Wt) control leaves, but also different from each other. Among the contributors to these differences are substances with a presumed involvement in resistance, such as salicortin and soluble condensed tannins. Second, bioassays with one Bt line suggest that the modification somehow affected innate resistance (“Innate” is used here in opposition to the “acquired” Bt resistance) in ways such that slugs preferred Bt over Wt leaves. Third, the preference test suggests that the innate resistance in Bt relative to Wt plants may not be uniformly expressed throughout the whole plant and that leaf ontogeny interacts with the modification to affect resistance. This was manifested through an ontogenetic determined increase in leaf consumption that was more than four times higher in Bt compared to Wt leaves. Our result are of principal importance, as these indicate that genetic modifications can affect innate resistance and thus non-target herbivores in ways that may have commercial and/or environmental consequences. The finding of a modification–ontogeny interaction effect on innate resistance may be especially important in assessments of GM plants with a long lifespan such as trees.  相似文献

This study was initiated by suggestions that the Japanese brown alga Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt, recently found to be invading shores along the eastern Solent (Southern England), might replace certain common native plants, to the possible detriment of local epibiont communities. Eighty animal, 52 plant and 9 fungal species have been identified from S. muticum plants collected at four different localities. Animal fouling was most conspicuous on permanently submerged plants growing along the edge of floating harbour installations. Algal epibionts were most numerous and varied on S. muticum from tidal lagoons on a well-scoured but sheltered rocky shore. Most of the epibionts colonised the perennial portions of the plants, close to the holdfast. A few settled along the fronds in summer, but none were found in the region of the secondary and tertiary apical meristems. Seasonal variations in the abundance and diversity of algal epibionts were observed; most were restricted to summer, but winter and all-year-round species were also noted. Fungal studies on S. muticum have isolated only saprophytic species, which are also common locally on other Phaeophyceae. Overall, these data suggest that S. muticum can support a considerable epibiota and, therefore, its introduction seems unlikely to result in a significant change in local epiphyte communities.  相似文献

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and several other N-nitrosamines have been detected as disinfection by-products in drinking waters in many countries around the world. An ultra-performance liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry method with solid phase extraction sample preparation was developed to study the occurrence of N-nitrosamines in several water treatment plants and distribution systems in China. Isotope labeled N-nitrosodi-n-propylamine-d14 (NDPA-d14) was selected as the internal standard for quantification. The solid phase extraction procedures including pH, enrichment process and MS/MS parameters including capillary voltage, cone gas flow, cone voltage, collision energy were optimized to give average recoveries of 26% to 112% for nine N-nitrosamine species. The instrument detection limits were estimated to range from 0.5 to 5 ??g·L?1 for the nine N-nitrosamine species. NDMA and several other N-nitrosamines were found at fairly high concentrations in several water treatment plants and distribution systems. NDMA was found in all locations, and the highest concentrations in cities B, G, T, and W were 3.0, 35.7, 21.3, and 19.7 ng·L?1, respectively. A wide range of N-nitrosamines concentrations and species were observed in different locations. Higher concentrations of N-nitrosamines were detected in distribution systems that were further away from the treatment plants, suggesting that the contact time between the residual disinfectant and natural organic matter may play an important role in the formation of these compounds.  相似文献

In this paper the thermal behaviour of Miscanthus × Giganteus (M×G) is studied by thermogravimetric analysis. In order to characterise the thermal behaviour of its cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, the raw M×G material was treated sequentially by water, H2SO4 and KOH. The global kinetic parameters for each component were determined by subsequent modelling of the TG data with the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method and multivariate non-linear regression. It is found that the global pyrolysis of M×G can be satisfactorily described using a six steps-kinetic scheme. The analytical method proposed here can be probably extended without too many efforts to other biomass products. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Optimal defense theories suggest that a trade-off between defense costs and benefits maintains genetic variation within plant populations. This study assessed the independent and interactive effects of genetic- and environment-based variation in aspen leaf chemistry on insect performance, preference, and defoliation. Gypsy moth larvae were released into screenhouses containing eight aspen genotypes growing with high and low levels of nutrient availability. Plant chemistry, defoliation, and larval growth rates varied in response to genotype, nutrient availability, and their interaction. Total phenolic glycoside concentrations were inversely correlated with patterns of larval preference and were the best predictor of larval performance and defoliation among genotypes. Low-nutrient trees were less heavily defoliated and afforded decreased larval growth rates compared with high-nutrient trees. Nutrient availability mediated the defense benefits of phenolic glycosides, as plant chemistry explained significantly less variation in defoliation in low- compared with high-nutrient trees (7% vs. 44% of variation explained). These results suggest that spatial and temporal variation in resource availability may influence the relative magnitude of defense benefits in plants. Environmental mediation of the defense costs and benefits likely leads to diversifying selection and may maintain genetic polymorphisms in chemical defense traits in plant populations.  相似文献

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is declining across the western United States. Aspen habitats are among the most diverse plant communities in this region and loss of these habitats can result in shifts in biodiversity, productivity, and hydrology across a range of spatial scales. Western aspen occurs on the majority of sites seral to conifer species, and long-term maintenance of these aspen woodlands requires periodic fire. Over the past century, fire intervals, extents, and intensities have been insufficient to regenerate aspen stands at historic rates; however the effects of various fire regimes and management scenarios on aspen vegetation dynamics at broad spatial and temporal scales are unexplored. Here we use field data, remotely sensed data, and fire atlas information to develop a spatially explicit landscape simulation model to assess the effects of current and historic wildfire regimes and prescribed burning programs on landscape vegetation composition across two mountain ranges in the Owyhee Plateau, Idaho. Model outputs depict the future structural makeup and species composition of the landscape at selected time steps under simulated management scenarios. We found that under current fire regimes and in the absence of management activities, loss of seral aspen stands will continue to occur over the next two centuries. However, a return to historic fire regimes (burning 12–14% of the modeled landscape per decade) would maintain the majority of aspen stands in early and mid seral woodland stages and minimizes the loss of aspen. A fire rotation of 70–80 years was estimated for the historic fire regime while the current fire regime resulted in a fire rotation of 340–450 years, underscoring the fact that fire is currently lacking in the system. Implementation of prescribed burning programs, treating aspen and young conifer woodlands according to historic fire occurrence probabilities, are predicted to prevent conifer dominance and loss of aspen stands.  相似文献

A carbon-based model has been developed to simulate responses of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) stands to interannual climatic variation and insect defoliation. The model is designed for medium time scale (10–100 years) simulations and requires only daily maximum and minimum temperature and precipitation as meteorological inputs. The modelling approach is similar to FOREST-BGC but includes additional processes known to be important in deciduous forests. These include removal of leaf area during outbreaks of forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria Hbn.), phenological changes in leaf area index, storage and allocation of non-structural carbohydrate and the contribution of understorey vegetation to evapotranspiration. The model was used for simulations of growth and mortality of biomass carbon in two mature aspen forests located in the climatically dry transition zone between the boreal forest and prairie grassland regions of Saskatchewan, Canada. Model inputs of annual defoliation intensity were based on historic records of insect defoliation and the incidence of light-coloured tree rings in disks or cores collected from aspen at each of the two sites. At both sites, moderately good correlations (r2=0.47–0.54) were obtained between modelled interannual changes in stem carbon growth and observed interannual changes in stem basal area increment obtained from tree-ring analysis. Model outputs of stem biomass carbon were found to be highly sensitive to parameters describing seasonal leaf area duration, insect defoliation intensity, photosynthesis and root respiration and carbohydrate allocation to growth versus storage.  相似文献

This study aims to identify effective antialgal allelochemicals from marine macroalgae that inhibit the growth of red tide microalgae. Practically, new algicidal agents were developed to control red tide. The growth inhibitory effects of 5 marine macroalgae Porphyra tenera, Laminaria japonica, Ulva pertusa, Enteromorpha clathrata, and Undaria pinnatifida on Skeletonema costatum were evaluated by adding crude seawater extracts of macroalgal dry tissue into the culture medium containing S. costatum. The half-effective concentrations at 120 h (EC50, 120 h) of the seawater extracts were 0.6, 0.9, 1.0, 1.0, and 4.7 g/L for the five macroalgae above, respectively. E. clathrata, L. japonica and U. pertusa showed strong allelopathic effect on the growth of S. costatum. There have been no previous reports with regard to the allelopathic effects of the former two macroalgae so far. The possible allelochemicals of 21 compounds of the E. clathrata were detected using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Unsaturated fatty acids, acrylic acid (C3H4O2), and linolenic acid (C18H30O2) were the most likely allelochemicals in E. clathrata.  相似文献

Plant secondary chemistry mediates the ability of herbivores to locate, accept and survive on potential host plants. We examined the relationship between attack by the cerambycid beetle Phoracantha solida and the chemistry of the secondary phloem (inner bark) of two differentially attacked plantation forestry taxa, Corymbia variegata and its hybrid with C. torelliana. We hypothesised that this differential rate of attack may have to do with differences in secondary chemistry between the taxa. We found differences in the bark chemistry of the taxa, both with respect to phenolic compounds and terpenoids. We could detect no difference between bored and non-bored C. variegata trees (the less preferred, but co-evolved host). Hybrid trees were not different in levels of total polyphenols, flavanols or terpenes according to attack status, but acetone extracts were significantly different between bored and non-bored trees. We propose that variations in the bark chemistry explain the differential attack rate between C. variegata and the hybrid hosts.  相似文献

The threatened seagrass Halophila johnsonii Eiseman coexists subtidally with H. decipiens Ostenfeld in southeastern Florida, but only H. johnsonii also occurs intertidally. Pulse amplitude modulated fluorometry and fiber-optic spectrometry were used to investigate the photobiology of two populations of H. johnsonii and H. decipiens in an attempt to explain these distribution patterns. Maximum photosynthetic quantum yields (Fv/Fm) were measured in situ as a function of depth distribution within, and between, these two species at two sites (Jupiter Sound, 26°57′N; 80°04′W, and northern Biscayne Bay, 25°55′N; 80°07′W) along the east coast of Florida, USA, during 6–10 March 2001. Reciprocal transplants at the northern site were used to evaluate the plasticity of photosynthetic patterns and pigment absorption spectra and to gain insights into the mechanisms responsible for variations in the observed depth-distribution patterns. Subtidal-population Fv/Fm values were generally higher for H. johnsonii than for H. decipiens, at both sites. At the northern site, intertidal H. johnsonii had significantly lower Fv/Fm (0.494±0.138) than both subtidal H. johnsonii (0.696±0.045) and subtidal H. decipiens (0.668±0.048). In contrast, at the southern site intertidal H. johnsonii had the highest Fv/Fm (0.663±0.047) and were the largest plants. Fv/Fm values of subtidal plants of both species decreased when they were transplanted into shallow, intertidal beds. Correspondingly, Fv/Fm increased for intertidal H. johnsonii transplanted into the subtidal, 2 m deep beds. Rapid light curves indicated that H. decipiens had lower maximum relative electron transport rates (RETRmax) than did H. johnsonii. In addition, the onset of photoinhibition occurred at lower irradiances for H. decipiens (537–820 μmol photons m−2 s−1) compared to H. johnsonii (1141–2670 μmol photons m−2 s−1). RETRmax values decreased for intertidal H. johnsonii transplanted into subtidal beds, but they increased for both species when transplanted from subtidal to intertidal beds. Absorption spectra for the acetone-soluble leaf pigments of intertidal H. johnsonii exhibited a dominant peak near 345 nm; this UV peak was 30% lower for subtidal plants. Pigment absorption spectra for H. decipiens lacked the 345 nm peak and absorbances, normalized to leaf pairs, were lower across the spectrum. Our results indicate that photosynthetic tolerance to higher irradiances and presence of UV-absorbing pigments (UVP) in H. johnsonii may allow this species to exploit the shallowest waters without competition from the closely related, but UVP-lacking H. decipiens.  相似文献

The influence of energetic heterocyclic high-nitrogen salts on microbial activity in soil enrichment was investigated. 5-Aminotetrazole, a sodium salt of 5-aminotetrazole, ammonium azotetrazolate, sodium azotetrazolate, guanidinium azotetrazolate, triaminoguanidine azotetrazolate and triaminoguanidine hydrochloride were examined. Respiration tests determined the amount and rate of production of CO2, H2 and H2S from microbial activity. Aminotetrazoles, triaminoguanidine azotetrazolate and triaminoguanidine hydrochloride substantially reduced the amount and rate of microbial CO2 production. The total amount of CO2 produced in the soil enrichments was affected by the cation from the azotetrazole salt, whereas the azotetrazolate anion did not seem to inhibit microbial CO2 production. In contrast, all applied compounds stopped the production of H2S completely and modified the rate of H2 production in the cultures compared with the control. The influence of ammonium azotetrazolate and sodium azotetrazolate on the activity of isolated sulfate-reducing bacteria was also determined. The compounds did not have bactericidal activity towards sulfate-reducing bacteria, but the compounds decreased the amount of H2S produced or slowed the growth of these bacteria in comparison with the control.  相似文献

Uptake of contaminants by plants and their mechanisms have been the subjects of several studies, but reports on the analysis of metal translocation in hardwood trees are limited. The main objective of this study is to compare metal accumulation and translocation in red maple (Acer rubrum) and trembling aspen (Poplar tremuloides) growing in Northern Ontario. Results show that P. tremuloides leaf tissues accumulate more nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) than roots. The concentrations of these elements in A. rubrum were low in leaf, branch, and roots tissues compared to the bioavailable levels of these metals in soil. The translocation factors (TFs) of metals from roots to leaves were low for copper (Cu) and high for iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), Ni, and Zn in P. tremuloides. They varied from 0.52 to 3.26 for Fe, 3.39 to 5.47 for Mg, 2.6 to 16.4 for Ni, and 1.41 to 4.1 for Zn. For A. rubrum the TF was low for all the elements except Mg. For this species, the TF values from roots to leaves varied from 0.08 to 0.17 for Fe, 2.62 to 4.13 for Mg, 0.26 to 0.81 for Ni, and 0.71 to 0.90 for Zn. Overall, Cu does not accumulate in P. tremuloides and A. rubrum tissues, and the two species have different mechanisms in dealing with the other main contaminants in the region, specifically Ni and Zn. P. tremuloides is an accumulator for Ni and Zn while A. rubrum is an excluder for Zn and it uses the avoidance strategy to deal with soil Ni contamination.  相似文献

We present a new experimental set-up enabling fine-scale examination of how changing environmental conditions affect the below-ground biogeochemical microenvironment of aquatic macrophytes. By means of microsensor and planar optode technology, the influence of plant-mediated radial O2 release on the below-ground chemical microenvironment of Zostera muelleri and Halophila ovalis was determined in high spatio-temporal resolution. The seagrass specimens were cultured in a new split flow chamber with artificial sediment made of a deoxygenated seawater–agar solution with added sulphide. Microelectrode measurements revealed radial O2 release from the root–shoot junction of both Z. muelleri and H. ovalis during both light stimulation and darkness, resulting in a rapid decrease in H2S concentration, and a significant drop in pH was observed within the plant-derived oxic microzone of Z. muelleri. No radial O2 release was detectable from the below-ground tissue of Z. muelleri during conditions of combined water-column hypoxia and darkness, leaving the plants more susceptible to sulphide invasion. The spatial O2 heterogeneity within the immediate rhizosphere of Z. muelleri was furthermore determined in two dimensions by means of planar optodes. O2 images revealed a decrease in the spatial extent of the plant-derived oxic microzone surrounding the below-ground tissue during darkness, supporting the microelectrode measurements. This new experimental approach can be applied to all rooted aquatic plants, as it allows for direct visual assessment of the below-ground tissue surface during microprofiling, while enabling modification of the above-ground environmental conditions.  相似文献
