Fishery production and food webs have been studied on the Scotian Shelf and upper continental slope along a transect running 270 km SE of Halifax, Canada. The area (TCNAF Division 4W) supports a fishery of roughly 0.15x106 metric tons. Overall primary production of the shelf waters is 102 g C m-2 year-1 and of the slope wacers about 128 g C m-2 year-1. Demersal fish production (average 4.1 kcal m-2 year-1) is highest over the shelf and declines in an offshore direction, while pelagic fish production (average 16 kcal m-2 year-1) is highest over the slope and declines in an inshore direction. Hypothetical food webs of these two intergrading ecosystems have been constructed, based on data for primary production, fish catches, and the biomasses of zooplankton and macrobenthos. These lead us to suggest that there are basic differences in food chains and efficiencies between the two ecosystems that account for their differences in production. Although primary production is 17% higher on an average on the Nova Scotian transect than in the North Sea, the apparent zooplankton and macrobenthos production is 31% lower and macrobenthos production may also be lower. Overall fish catch from the Scotian Shelf and slope is about 47% lower per unit area than the catch in the North Sea, despite the fact that the demersal catches are identical. This is accounted for by a much lower overall pelagic catch from the Nova Scotian area, centered in a region that is small compared to the total area. Fish production in different regions cannot be predicted merely on the basis of differences in level of primary production, but must take into account differences in the structure of the ecosystems.  相似文献

Between July 1978 and March 1980, the distribution, population dynamics and secondary production of Caulleriella caputesocis St. Joseph, 1864, in Southampton Water, South England, were investigated. The distribution of the polychaete was related to amount of silt and copper-content of the sediment, the highest densities occurring in sediment containing 60 to 100% silt and less than 50 ppm copper. Breeding occurred at a low level throughout the year, usually when the worms were over one year old, with peak breeding between May and September. C. caputesocis in Southampton Water is monotelic, and oocytes measured 120 to 160 m in diameter at spawning. Unshed oocytes were resorbed. Annual secondary production varied between 0.01 and 5.90 g C m-2 yr-1 and P:B ratio of the species ranged between 0.84 and 7.09.  相似文献

Measurements of total, chemical and biological oxygen consumption were made at 5 stations situated between 22 and 35 m in Lindåspollene, Norway. The results from each station did not reveal any clear seasonal variation, but the pooled data showed highest values in September, and lowest in January. Problems concerning interpretion of results of biological and chemical O2 consumption obtained by a poisoning technique (using formaldehyde) are discussed. The time-weighted mean of the annual total O2 consumption based on all stations was 10.67 ml m-2 h-1 or 92.2 l m-2 year-1. This corresponds to a consumption of 34.5g C m-2 year-1 (respiratory quotient=0.7), or 34 to 37% of the net annual primary production of phytoplankton.  相似文献

A Southampton Water (England) population of Melinna palmata Malmgren was studied from July 1978 to March 1980. M. palmata is a gregarious sedentary polychaete living in muddy substratum. The distribution of the polychaete in Southampton Water was related to the silt content of the sediment. The species occurs in sediments of <60% silt, it is dioecious, and the gametes are shed during a prolonged breeding season throughout the year, with peaks in March and July. Mature oocytes measure between 180 and 240 m in diameter at spawning, and fertilization is external. Unshed oocytes are resorbed. Annual secondary ary production was 0.42 gC m–2yr–1 and the P:B ratio was 2.19.  相似文献

Biodeposition by salt-marsh invertebrates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The importance of salt-marsh invertebrate biodeposits in biogeochemical cycles is discussed. Yearly biodeposition rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, maganese, copper, zinc, and molybdenum are reported for 5 invertebrate species. The 5 species (Littorina irrorata, Arcatula demissa, Polymesoda caroliniana, Uca pugnax and U. pugilator) deposit 1709 g dry weight m2 year-1, of which 455 g m2 year-1 is organic material. Calculations suggest that the invertebrates are capable of processing 53% of the marsh's yearly production, but the actual amount utilized is probably substantially less than this.Contribution No. 716 from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and Contribution No. 295 from the University of Georgia Marine Institute.  相似文献

From July 1978 to March 1980, a study was made on the distribution, population dynamics and secondary production of Nephtys hombergii Audouin et Edw. occurring in the sublittoral industrialised region of Southampton Water in south England. The distribution of the worm was related to the silt content and copper level of the sediment, the greatest densities of N. hombergii being found in sediment containing 60 to 100% silt. Breeding occurred at a low level throughout the year, with a maximum in July to September and November to January in the second year of growth. Spawning occurred when the oocytes measured 200m in diameter, and unshed gametes were resorbed. Annual production varied between 0.092 and 4.32 g C m-2 yr-1 (ash-free dry weight) and amounted to 1.9–39.4% of the total macrofaunal production at the sampling stations. The production:biomass (P:B) ratio of the species varied between 1.6 and 2.9.  相似文献

Abstract

Sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) were collected from the Mediterranean coast off Alexandria, Egypt and the Atlantic coast of Ireland to the west of Galway. Samples of another urchin species, Psammechinus miliaris, were collected from the entrance to Southampton Water, U.K. Both the Alexandria coast and Southampton Water receive domestic and industrial waste water inputs whilst the western Irish coast is relatively unpolluted.

Sampled animals were dissected to separate coelomic fluids, Aristotle's lantern, gonads and tissue (digestive tract plus connective tissue). the concentrations of heavy metals (cadmium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc) in the different parts were measured using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Many levels of heavy metals in the different parts were similar in specimens taken across the wide range of sites and the two species. A notable exception was the high level of copper (33 μg g?1 dry wt.) and zinc 328 μg g?1? dry wt.) in urchin tissue from Southampton Water.

The metal concentrations in the gonads of Paracentrotus lividus are of particular interest because of human consumption of this species. the highest levels of copper (3.3–5.2 g?1? dry wt.) and zinc (74–181 μ g?1? dry wt.) dry wt.) in gonads were found in the samples from Egypt. Data from this study are compared with other results reported from the Mediterranean.

A simple, short term, elevated water column copper uptake experiment was undertaken with Paracentrotus lividus which showed an increase in gonad concentrations of this element.  相似文献

The energetics and population dynamics of a barnacle (Balanus glandula Darwin) population in British Columbia, Canada, were studied. Consumption, energy flow, production and mortality were 6844.6, 6667.0, 2896.5 and 2522.8 Kcal m-2 year-1, respectively. These energy flow and production values are among the highest for animal populations reported, and therefore strongly suggest the functional importance of E. glandula in littoral systems. The young age groups of the first-year settlements were most important in contributing to the energy flow, production and reproduction of the entire population. Most of the assimilated energy in the older age groups was used in respiration.  相似文献

The high-energy windward coasts with narrow rocky intertidal regions (Oistens, River Bay) at Barbados, West Indies, had abundant macroscopic algae (mainly Sargassum sp.) and populations of Holothuria glaberrima Selenka and Echinometra lucunter (Linnaeus), while protected ones with a wide rocky intertidal had sparse macroscopic algae and populations of E. lucunter only. The low-energy leeward coasts with wide rocky intertidal regions (Six Men's Bay, Payne's Bay) had no macroscopic algae in the surf zone and populations of E. lucunter only. Numerical densities of E. lucunter were high in all localities; the highest level of 144 m-2 was found at Six Men's Bay; numerical densities of H. glaberrima were high at both Oistens and River Bay, the highest level of 36 m-2 being recorded at River Bay. The caloric density of H. glaberrima at River Bay was 412 kcal m-2. The highest combined density of H. glaberrima and E. lucunter was at Oistens (632 kcal m-2, with 254 kcal m-2 being due to E. lucunter). The highest caloric density of E. lucunter at Six Men's Bay was 482 kcal m-2. Dependence on suspended food probably restricts H. glaberrima to high-energy environments while E. lucunter has an additional food source through its ability to scrape the rock substratum. E. lucunter may be more efficient in catching drift food. Mortality is suggested to be the basis of the failure of E. lucunter to displace H. glaberrima from the high-energy location.  相似文献

Growth and secondary production of pelagic copepods near Australia's North West Cape (21° 49 S, 114° 14 E) were measured during the austral summers of 1997/1998 and 1998/1999. Plankton communities were diverse, and dominated by copepods. To estimate copepod growth rates, we incubated artificial cohorts allocated to four morphotypes, comprising naupliar and copepodite stages of small calanoid and oithonid copepods. Growth rates ranging between 0.11 and 0.83 day–1 were low, considering the high ambient temperatures (23–28°C). Calanoid nauplii had a mean growth rate of 0.43±0.17 day-1 (SD) and calanoid copepodites of 0.38±0.13 day-1. Growth rates of oithonid nauplii and copepodites were marginally less (0.38±0.19 day–1 and 0.28±0.11 day–1 respectively). The observed growth rates were suggestive of severe food limitation. Although nauplii vastly outnumbered copepodite and adult copepods, copepodites comprised the most biomass. Copepodites also contributed most to secondary production, although adult egg production was sporadically important. The highest copepod production was recorded on the shelf break (60 mg C m-2 day-1). Mean secondary production over both shelf and shelf break stations was 12.6 mg C m-2 day-1. Annual copepod secondary production, assuming little seasonality, was estimated as ~ 3.4 g C m-2 year-1 (182 kJ m-2 year-1).Communicated by G.F. Humphrey, Sydney  相似文献

The seasonal productivity cycle and factors controlling annual variation in the timing and magnitude of the winter–spring bloom were examined for several locations (range: 42°20.35′–42°26.63′N; 70°44.19′–70°56.52′W) in Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay, USA, from 1995 to 1999, and compared with earlier published data (1992–1994). Primary productivity (mg C m−2 day−1) in Massachusetts Bay from 1995 to 1999 was generally characterized by a well-developed winter–spring bloom of several weeks duration, high but variable production during the summer, and a prominent fall bloom. The bulk of production (mg C m−3 day−1) typically occurred in the upper 15 m of the water column. At a nearby Boston Harbor station a gradual pattern of increasing areal production from winter through summer was more typical, with the bulk of production restricted to the upper 5 m. Annual productivity in Massachusetts Bay and Boston Harbor ranged from a low of 160 g C m−2 year−1 to a high of 787 g C m−2 year−1 from 1992 to 1999. Mean annual productivity was higher (mean=525 g C m−2 year−1) and more variable near the harbor entrance than in western Massachusetts Bay. At the harbor station productivity varied more than 3.5-fold (CV=40%) over an 8 year sampling period. Average annual productivity (305–419 g C m−2 year−1) and variability around the means (CV=25–27%) were lower at both the outer nearfield and central nearfield regions of Massachusetts Bay. Annual productivity in 1998 was unusually low at all three sites (<220 g C m−2 year−1) due to the absence of a winter–spring phytoplankton bloom. Potential factors influencing the occurrence of a spring bloom were investigated. Incident irradiance during the winter–spring period was not significantly different (P > 0.05) among years (1995–1999). The mean photic depth during the bloom period was significantly deeper (P < 0.05) in 1998, signifying greater light availability with depth. Nutrients were also in abundance during the winter–spring of 1998 with stratified conditions not observed until May. In general, the magnitude of the winter–spring bloom in Massachusetts Bay from 1995 to 1999 was significantly correlated with winter water temperature (r 2=0.78) and zooplankton abundance (r 2=0.74) over the bloom period (typically February–April). The absence of the 1998 bloom was associated with higher than average water temperature and elevated levels of zooplankton abundance just prior to, and during, the peak winter–spring bloom period. The metabolism of 14C-labelled lactate was investigated in the horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus and the stone crab Menippe mercenaria. When a bolus of (14C-U)-D-lactate was injected into L. polyphemus, there was substantial release pf 14CO2 into the medium. In the case of M. mercenaria, 14CO2 release was also observed after injection of (14C-U)-L-lactate into experimental individuals. Analysis of the distribution of radioactivity in whole body extracts of both species revealed easily detectable amounts of radioactivity in the glycogen fraction, although the bulk of the radioactivity was in the cation, anion/neutral and CO2 fractions. To investigate the metabolism of lactate further, 14C-labelled lactate was injected into large individuals of L. polyphemus and M. mercenaria, and the distribution of radioactivity was determined in the hemolymph, muscle and hepatopancreas. Utilization of (14C-U)-D-lactate by L. polyphemus resulted in the accumulation of significant amounts of labelled glucose in all three body compartments as well as the production of labelled glycogen in the telson levator muscle and hepatopancreas. Utilization of (14C-U)-L-lactate resulted in a similar pattern of glucose and glycogen labelling in the hemolymph, cheliped muscle and hepatopancreas of M. mercenaria. These studies demonstrate that both L. polyphemus and M. mercenaria have the capacity for glyco- and gluconeogenesis using lactate as the substrate.  相似文献

In order to examine the role of position in the tidal range on biomass production and nutrient pools in Spartina alterniflora in an Argentinian estuary, we estimated productivity, the concentration of C, N and P in tissues and pools (concentration×biomass) of these elements in low (LM) and high (HM) zones. Aboveground biomass of S. alterniflora was higher in HM than in LM. Aboveground primary productivity was 106 and 439 g dry wt m?2 year?1 in LM and HM, respectively. Belowground biomass was similar in LM and HM. Belowground primary productivity was 526 and 744 g dry wt m?2 year?1 for LM and HM, respectively. Nutrient pools were higher in HM than in LM. Biomass and productivity values were low, which makes nutrient pools low. The lower values of the parameters analysed in LM than in HM indicate that position in the tidal range is an important factor in this system, possibly due to the effect of flooding. Moreover, this pattern is opposite to the general one observed in the northern hemisphere, meaning that studying marshes from different environments is worth doing. Because pools were higher in HM, this zone would be more important for nutrient input to the estuary.  相似文献

Although mysids play important roles in marine food chains, studies on their production are scarce, especially for warm-water species. We investigated life history and production of Orientomysis robusta in a shallow warm-temperate habitat of the Sea of Japan. Its spawning and recruitment occurred throughout the year; 19 overlapping cohorts were recognizable over an annual cycle. The summer cohorts recruited in July–September exhibited rapid growth, early maturity, small brood size, and small body size. A converse set of life history traits characterized the autumn–winter cohorts recruited in October–March. The spring cohorts recruited in April–June had intermediate characteristics of both cohorts. Life spans were 19–33, 21–48, and 69–138 days for summer, spring, and autumn–winter cohorts, respectively, and mortality rates were high for spring and summer cohorts, especially during June–August but were low for autumn–winter cohorts. Production calculated from the summation of growth increments was 488.8 mg DW m−2 year−1 with an annual P/B ratio of 21.26. The short life span seems to be responsible for such an extremely high P/B ratio. A method not requiring recognition and tracking cohorts gave similar values (534.0 mg DW m−2 year−1 and 20.49). The close agreement in production values between the two methods indicates our estimates are valid.  相似文献

The effect of the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) on the exchange of dissolved nutrients (silicate, phosphate, ammonium, nitrate+nitrite) and gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide) across the sediment-water interface was examined in 1983 and 1984 using experimental mesocosms (13 m3), designed to simulate a shallow coastal ecosystem, that allow for reciprocal biogeochemical interactions between water column (5 m) and bottom sediments (30 cm deep). Benthic, fluxes, measured during a spring-summer warming period, were compared for mesocosms maintained either with added M. mercenaria (16 per m2, treatment) or without M. mercenaria (control) as a component of the benthic community. Fluxes were within the range observed for the (control) community in situ in mid-Narragansett Bay and exhibited the pattern of increasing flux with increasing temperature observed in nature. For dissolved inorganic (DIN=ammonia+nitrate+nitrite), analytical problems allowed comparison of fluxes only at the higher temperatures (17° to 22°C); average DIN fluxes were 57% higher in mesocosms with clams. Fluxes of other nutrients and gases were modelled as exponential functions of temperature (9° to 22°C) using a linear regression of the natural logarithm of flux upon temperature in both treatment and control situations. Differences between regression slopes and intercepts for conditions with and without clams were assessed by analysis of covariance. Slopes of the linearized temperature-flux relationships were not significantly different between treatments for any flux measured, suggesting that presence of the clams did not alter the basic relationship of flux and temperature normally observed with this community. For oxygen consumption and silicate production, the regression intercepts were significantly higher in the clam treatment, suggesting that the level of flux was generally elevated in the presence of M. mercenaria by about 20% (oxygen) and 86% (silicate) at any given temperature. Data for carbon dioxide and phosphate showed similar trends to oxygen and silicate, but the variance in fluxes was larger and regression intercepts for the two treatments were not significantly different.  相似文献

Large areas of mangroves in India are heavily disturbed by cattle grazing, hypersalinity, and other human-induced impacts. In two disturbed Avicennia marina forests and two undisturbed A. marina and Rhizophora apiculata forests in the Pichavaram mangroves of the Vellar–Coleroon estuarine complex, southeast India, we measured the rates and pathways of microbial decomposition of soil organic matter to determine if human impact is altering biogeochemical activity within these stands. Rates of total carbon oxidation (TCOX) were higher in the undisturbed A. marina forest (mean 199 mol C m–2 year–1) than in the two impacted stands (43 and 79 mol C m–2 year–1); rates of total carbon oxidation in the R. apiculata forest averaged 75 mol C m–2 year–1. Sulphate reduction (range 21–319 mmol S m–2 day–1) was the major decomposition pathway (65–85% of TCOX), except at the most disturbed forest (30% of TCOX). Rates of sulphate reduction at all sites peaked in sub-surface soils to a depth of about 1 m, leading to little carbon burial (3–5% of total C input). There was some evidence of measurable iron and manganese reduction in association with tree roots. Rates of microbial activity were rapid in comparison with rates measured in other mangrove soils, reflecting high rates of phytoplankton production and organic matter retention in this lagoon. Human-induced disturbance creates a sharp zonation of dry, hypersaline soil overlying less saline, wetter soil, suppressing surface microbial and root growth. We conclude that this vertical alteration of soil characteristics and biogeochemistry shifts the cycling of nutrients between trees and microbes to a disequilibrium state, partly explaining why mangroves are stunted in these declining forests.Communicated by G. The animal-habitat relationships and seasonal dynamics of the benthic macroinfauna were investigated from November 1986 to October 1988 in the Great Sippe-wissett salt marsh (Massachusetts, USA). Total macrofaunal abundance varied seasonally, displaying a peak in late spring and early summer, then declining sharply during late summer and recovering briefly in fall before collapsing in winter. Three macroinfaunal assemblages were found in the marsh, distributed along gradients of environmental factors. These included a sandy non-organic sediment assemblage, a sandy organic sediment assemblage and a muddy sediment assemblage. The species groups characteristic of unstable sandy non-organic sediments included the polychaetes Leitoscoloplos fragilis, Aricidea jefreyssi, Magelona rosea and Streptosyllis verrilli, the oligochaete Paranais litoralis, and the crustacean Acanthohaustorius millsi. Sandy organic sediments were characterized by the polychaetes Marenzelleria viridis, Capitella capitata, Neanthes succinea, N. arenaceodonta, Polydora ligni and Heteromastus filiformis, the oligochaete Lumbricillus sp., and the mollusc Gemma gemma. In muddy sites, the polychaete Streblospio benedicti and the oligochaetes Paranais litoralis and Monopylephorus evertus were the dominant species. Secondary production of benthic macroinfauna in each of these habitats was estimated. The highest values of biomass and production were recorded in the sandy organic sediments. Secondary production was estimated to be 1850 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy organic areas, but only 281 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy non-organic areas and 113 kJ m-2 yr-1 in muddy areas. This results in an area-weighted average production of 505 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the unvegetated areas of the marsh. The Great Sippewissett salt marsh has an area of 483800 m2, the total secondary production of the macroinfauna for the whole unvegetated area of the marsh was estimated as 4651 kg dry wt yr-1, expressed as somatic growth. This production value seems consistent with production data obtained for other intertidal North Atlantic environments.  相似文献

Adults and furciliae of Thysanoessa longicaudata (Krøyer) taken in continuous plankton records (CPR) in 1966 and 1967 were examined and measured. The measurements were converted to biomass using a length/weight equation, and net production values were calculated from these data. Two generations were spawned annually in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean and only one in the colder western waters and in the Norwegian Sea. The timing of reproduction in the spring was correlated with the mean sea-surface temperature. The highest annual production values (up to 12.24 mg dry weight m-3 year-1) were recorded in the eastern areas, where the ratio between production and biomass was usually between 4:1 and 8:1 compared with ratios usually between 2:1 and 3:1 in the western waters. The values for daily production per individual ranged from 3.34 g dry weight day-1 to 17.54 g day-1. Mortality in the early stages of development was calculated as about 98.2% of the eggs produced.  相似文献

Secondary production of a macrobenthic community at an intertidal mudflat was estimated for 33 successive months. Sampling was carried out along a eutrophication gradient, including non-eutrophied Zostera meadows, an intermediate muddy area, and a strongly eutrophied sand-muddy flat, where macroalgal blooms of Enteromorpha spp. usually occur. The Zostera meadows were always the most productive habitat (145–225 g ash-free dry weight m–2 year–1). In the short term, the macroalgal bloom benefited the total estuarine production by enhancing the annual production in the eutrophied area. Nevertheless, our results show that this increase was short lived and in no way sufficient to match the production in the Zostera meadows. In the long term, the present study provides evidence that the disappearance of macrophyte beds, as a result of ongoing eutrophication, constitutes a major threat to the sustainability of the estuarine ecosystem.Communicated by S.A. We applied the simulation model ROMUL of soil organic matter dynamics in order to analyse and predict forest soil organic matter (SOM) changes following stand growth and also to identify gaps of data and modelling problems. SOM build-up was analysed (a) from bare sand to forest soil during a primary succession in Scots pine forest and (b) on mature forest soil under Douglas fir plantations as an example of secondary succession in The Netherlands. As some of the experimental data were unreliable we compiled a set of various scenarios with different soil moisture regime, initial SOM pools and amount and quality of above and below ground litter input. This allowed us to find the scenarios that reflect the SOM dynamics more realistically. In the Scots pine forest, total litter input was estimated as 0.50 kg m−2 year−1. Two scenarios were defined for the test runs: (a) forest floor moisture regimes—‘dry, mesic and hydric’ and (b) augmenting a root litter pool with three ratios of needles and branches to roots: 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2.0. The scenario finally compiled had the following characteristics: (a) climate for dry site with summer drought and high winter moisture of forest floor; (b) a litter input of 0.25 kg m−2 year−1 above ground and 0.50 kg m−2 year−1 below ground; (c) a low nitrogen and ash content in all litter fall fractions. The test runs for the estimation of the initial SOM pools and the amount and proportion of above and below ground litter fall were also performed in the Douglas fir plantation. The inputs of above ground litter tested in various combinations were 0.30 and 0.60 kg m−2 year−1, and below ground litter 0.30, 0.60 and 0.90 kg m−2 year−1. The scenario that fitted the experimental data had an SOM pool of 20–25 kg m−2, an aboveground litter input of 0.6 kg m−2 year−1and a below ground litter input of 0.9 kg m−2 year−1. The long-term simulation corresponded well with the observed patterns of soil organic matter accumulation associated with the forest soil development in primary and secondary succession. During primary succession in Scots pine forest on dry sand there is a consistent accumulation of a raw humus forest floor. The soil dynamics in the Douglas fir plantation also coincide with the observed patterns of SOM changes during the secondary succession, with SOM decreasing significantly under young forest, and SOM being restored in the older stands.  相似文献
