Reproductive periods and growth of two populations of Holothuria atra Jaeger distinctly different in body size at two sites of southern Taiwan were determined. Individuals examined in the present study were collected between march 1990 and February 1992. At Nanwan (21° 57N, 120° 45E), large individuals (351 to 1400 g wet wt) spawned from June to September. At Wanlitung (22°N, 120° 42E), a small proportion of frequently dividing individuals (<190 g wet wt) have mature gonads in May, June and September, but histological examination revealed no sign of spawning. Sexual recruits, defined as small individuals <5 g wet wt without sign of regeneration, were not found at either site during this 2-yr study. After the peak of fission at Wanlitung, 40% of the population showed signs of external regeneration. At Nanwan, small individuals transferred from Wanlitung grew from 6 g (n=6) to 166±8 g within 8 mo, and from 48±4 g (n=50) to 324±16 g within 1 yr, with a 6.8-fold biomass increase in 1 yr. At Wanlitung, the monthly average body weight of H. atra is between 33 and 62 g, apparently due to frequent fission, and the biomass increased only 2.9-fold in 1 yr. In southern Taiwan, sexual reproduction of H. atra occurs in large individuals. Asexual reproduction, occurring in small individuals, is the chief mechanism for population maintenance and increase, but it may decrease sexual reproductive potential.  相似文献

Asexual reproduction by fission was monitored for 18 mo in populations of Holothuria (Halodeima) atra, H. (H.) edulis and Stichopus chloronotus on three nearshore fringing reefs and one midshelf reef in the Great Barrier Reef. Fission in S. chloronotus occurred exclusively between March and October, with a peak value of 31% recently divided individuals in one population in July. H. atra showed a similar pattern, with maxima of between 16 and 26% from May to July. In H. edulis, asexual reproduction occurred only between March and July, with a maximum of 17% recently divided individuals in March. Fission rates of H. atra and S. chloronotus in winter were significantly higher than in all other seasons. For H. atra, at least 76% of all individuals at Fantome Island were estimated to undergo fission per year, whereas only 9% undergo fission on the midshelf reef. Highest annual fission rates (43%) for S. chloronotus were found in a dense population on Great Palm Island. The lower-density midshelf reef population exhibited comparatively lower annual fission rates (19%). About 24% of H. edulis undergo fission each year. Reproductive cycle, asexual reproduction, and population dynamics of the fissiparous brittle star, Ophiactis savignyi, which inhabits the exhalant passages of the sponge Haliclona sp. were examined monthly from February 1991 to January 1992 at Wanlitung, southern Taiwan (22°N; 120°E). Mature gametes were found from March to December, but release was mainly in May and June. Sexual recruits were found from May to December, with the highest frequency (14.1% of population) in June. Sexual recruits composed 2.4% of the 1-yr sample. Sex ratio of male to female was 24:1. Fission occurred throughout the year, although the frequency of recently split individuals was lower from January to June (6 to 31%), and higher from July to December (42 to 52%). The occurrence of fission was highest after spawning. Regenerating individuals composed 48.2% of the 1-yr sample. Population density fluctuated greatly during summer due to recruitment by fission and mortality or dispersal due to the stressful environmental conditions. Both sexual and asexual reproduction of O. savignyi were successful at this site.  相似文献

Seasonal population dynamics of the gammarid Acanthostepheia malmgreni Goës in Conception Bay, Newfoundland, were examined from October 1998 to November 2000. This species exhibited a 2.5-year life span, with the reproductive cycle correlating with seasonal phytoplankton flux. Females were semelparous and died following a 5-month brooding period and the subsequent release of juveniles in April and May. The biennial life cycle of this population should result in the presence of two cohorts in the hyperbenthos at any given time. However, the cohorts alternated in strength from year to year, which affected annual density, biomass and production during the study period. Densities were 64±87 ind. per 100 m3 in 1999 and 491±492 ind. per 100 m3 (mean±SD) in 2000. Secondary production was estimated at 18–44 mg C m–2 in 1999 and 180–311 mg C m–2 in 2000. The annual P/B ratios were 0.89 and 2.27 in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Growth varied both among and within cohorts, with different life-history stages exhibiting variable growth rates ranging from 0 to 12 mg dry mass month–1.Communicated by J.P. This study investigates the reproductive periodicity and reproductive output of the seagrass Zostera novazelandica on two intertidal reefs. Peak numbers of flowering shoots occurred during March (late summer) of two years at both sites and no flowering shoots occurred during the winter months of July to September. There were greater numbers of flowering shoots in seagrass patches in the low intertidal zone (up to an average of 55 per 0.1 m2) compared to the middle (up to 20 per 0.1 m2) and upper (up to 9 per 0.1 m2) zones, and about three times greater reproductive output in patches associated with tidepools compared to those not bordering tidepools. The average number of inflorescences per shoot was 3.1 (±0.25) at one site vs 1.2 (±0.08) at the other, and showed a progressive decrease from the lower shore to the upper shore. Patches associated with tidepools had twice the number of inflorescences per shoot (2.8 ± 0.24) than patches not bordering tidepools (1.5 ± 0.16). The number of flowering shoots was highly correlated with leaf width, leaf length, and ramet density, while the leaf-area index decreased from the lower shore to the upper shore. The reproductive effort of plants, as measured by the percent biomass invested in flowering shoots during peak reproduction, was significantly different between sites, tidepool associations, and shore level. For all the variables measured, there was considerable spatial variation, with significant interaction terms between most factors investigated. In laboratory experiments, more inflorescences were produced at light intensities of 30 and 300 μE m−2 s−1 than at 100 μE m−2 s−1. At a salinity of 17‰, 1.5 × the number of flowers was produced than at 33‰, while none was formed at 70‰. The tanaidacean Hargeria rapax (Harger, 1879) was sampled along intertidal transects semi-monthly at one site and quarterly at two other sites in salt marshes on Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA, from July 1985 to July 1986. Tanaids were most abundant near the mean highwater line and became progressively less abundant at lower intertidal elevations. Population density was greatest in the winter (December to February) when there were >29 000 individuals/m2 at one high intertidal station. Although reproductive individuals were present most of the year, peaks in reproductive activity occurred in autumn (late August to early November) and spring (early March to mid June). An increase in population density coincided with increased reproductive activity only in autumn. Tanaid cohorts produced in the spring and summer rarely survived beyond 6 to 8 wk, but those produced in the autumn overwintered and lived 22 to 26 wk. The sex ratio among mature individuals was 2.8:1 (females: males). Mature females ranged in size from 2.2 to 3.9 mm total length (TL) and mature males were 2.3 to 4.1 mm TL; there was no significant sexual difference (Student's t-test, P>0.05) in the mean TL of mature individuals. The mean (±SD) size of brooding females was 2.9±0.32 mm TL and the mean (±SD) nunber of offspring/brood was 8.3±4.99 young/female. The timing of tanaid reproduction together with the effects of predation by juvenile fish and crustaceans may account for most of the spatial and temporal patterns of tanaid abundance observed in this study. There was a significant linear relationship (P<0.001, r 2=0.54) between the growth rate (GR, mm/d) of individuals and average daily air temperature (°C) described by the equation: GR=0.00178 (°C)-0.00971. The potential annual contribution of tanaid production to higher trophic levels, estimated from knowledge of standing stocks, growth rates and fecundity, was 5.71, 0.91 and 0.46 g dry wt/m2 for high, mid and low intertidal areas, respectively. The high intertidal marsh, which supports the largest and most persistent standing stock of H. rapax, provides a rich foraging area for aquatic predators at high tide and an important source of recruits from which tanaid populations at lower intertidal elevations are recolonized after periods of intense predation pressure.  相似文献

The fishes occurring in a subtropical mangrove (Avicennia marina) area in Moreton Bay, Australia, were studied for one year (November 1987 to November 1988, inclusive). Fishes within the mangroves were sampled using a block net, whilst those in adjacent waters were sampled using seine and gill nets. Forty six percent of the species, 75% of the number of fishes and 94% of the biomass taken during the study (all methods combined) were of direct importance to regional fisheries. The fish community utilising the habitat within the mangrove forest differed from that occurring in adjacent waters in terms of density, standing crop, species composition and diversity-index values. Standing-crop estimates for the fishes occurring within the mangroves (study period mean ± SD = 25.3 ± 20.4 g m–2) were amongst the highest recorded values for estuarine areas whilst those for adjacent waters (2.9±2.3 g m–2) were comparable to those of other estuarine studies.  相似文献

Bacterial productivity in sandy sediments on reef flats at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef was determined from the rate of incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. The study was conducted during January 1982 and July 1983. A small diurnal increase occurred in sediments having a dense population of microalgae. Bacterial production was 120 to 370 mg C m-2 d-1 in summer on reef flats, which was equivalent to 30–40% of primary production by benthic microalgae. In winter, rates of primary production by benthic microalgae and secondary production by bacteria were about one-half to one-fifth of those in summer. There was much variation in production, due to patchiness in the distribution of benthic microbes, especially microalgae. Doubling times for the bacteria in surface sediment were 1 to 2 d in summer and 4 to 16 d in winter on the reef flats. These high productivity values for bacteria indicated that a net input of organic matter to the sediment was needed to support the growth of bacteria. Sediment bacteria thus have a very important role in transforming organic matter on the reef flats. Grazing by Holothuria atra depressed both primary production and bacterial production. It was estimated that these holothurians ate about 10 to 40% of bacterial carbon produced each day in summer, and thus have an important role in the carbon cycle. Harpacticoid copepods were numerically important components of the benthic meiofaunal community and probably had a significant impact on bacterial density as grazers.  相似文献

Regular daylight sampling over 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) in and adjacent to intertidal forested areas, in small creeks and over accreting mudbanks in the mainstream of a small mangrove-lined estuary in tropical northeastern Queensland, Australia, yielded 112 481 fish from 128 species and 43 families. Species of the families Engraulidae, Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Clupeidae and Atherinidae were numerically dominant in the community. The same species, with the addition ofLates calcarifer (Latidae).Acanthopagrus berda (Sparidae) andLutjanus agentimaculatus (Lutjanidae) dominated total community biomass. During high-tide periods, intertidal forested areas were important habitats for juvenile and adult fish, with grand mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 3.5±2.4 fish m–3 and 10.9±4.5 g m–3, respectively. There was evidence of lower densities and less fish species using intertidal forests in the dry season (August, October), but high variances in catches masked any significant seasonality in mean fish biomass in this habitat. On ebb tides, most fish species (major families; Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Atherinidae, Melanotaeniidae) moved to small shallow creeks, where mean (±1 SE) low-tide density and biomass were 31.3±12.4 fish m–2 and 29.0±12.1 g m–2, respectively. Large variances in catch data masked any seasonality in densities and biomasses, but the mean number of species captured per netting in small creeks was lowest in the dry season (July, August). Species of Engraulidae and Clupeidae, which dominated high-tide catches in the forested areas during the wet season, appeared to move into the mainstream of the estuary on ebbing tides and were captured over accreting banks at low tide. Accreting banks supported a mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 0.4±0.1 fish m–2 and 1.7±0.3 g m–2, respectively, at low tide. There were marked seasonal shifts in fish community composition in the estuary, and catches in succeeding wet seasons were highly dissimilar. Comparison of fish species composition in this and three other mangrove estuaries in the region revealed significant geographic and temporal (seasonal) variation in fish-community structure. Temporal variations in protein, carbohydrate, and lipid levels were studied in a passive suspension feeder, the gorgonian Paramuricea clavata. The samples were collected every month for mature and immature colonies over a three-year period (1997–2000). The relationship between biochemical composition and reproductive output was examined on the basis of the 1998 and 1999 data. In female and male P. clavata colonies, the tissue displayed differences in lipid concentrations only in winter–spring, due to the high lipid levels attained by female colonies in this period. Immature colonies showed significant differences in lipid concentration only with respect to mature females in spring. There were clear seasonal trends in the lipid and carbohydrate levels in P. clavata, with maximum values in winter–spring [male lipid 212±75 SD μg mg−1 of organic matter (OM) and female lipid 274±103 SD μg mg−1 of OM; male and female carbohydrate 68±14 SD μg mg−1 of OM], coinciding with maximum food concentration/quality, and minimum values in summer–autumn (male and female lipid 155±57 SD μg mg−1 of OM; male and female carbohydrate 56±14 SD μg mg−1 of OM), coinciding with low food concentration/quality. The relationship between reproductive output and tissue concentrations of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins was not straightforward, although there was an evident overlap of the lipid accumulation and the gonadal development. The results of this study show that protein, carbohydrate, and lipid levels may provide a record of episodes in the ecological cycle bearing on the trophic aspects of the target species. The results indicate that information on seasonal biochemical levels may explain benthopelagic coupling processes, provided factors such as natural diet, feeding rates, reproduction, and growth are well understood.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in population structure and incidence of fission were measured in intertidal and subtidal populations of Allostichaster insignis, a fissiparous sea star. Population size structure was stable over the course of the 1-year study. Sea stars in the subtidal zone attained greater maximum size (mean arm length, R = 35 mm) than those in the intertidal population (20 mm). Fission rates were greatest among small individuals (R < 20 mm). The frequency of fission ranged from 5 to 32% with peaks in early austral summer in the intertidal zone, and in autumn and winter in the subtidal zone. Sexual reproduction occurred in early spring in sea stars larger than 12 mm. The populations were heavily biased toward males. In the laboratory, A. insignis of three size classes (small, R = 9–13 mm; medium, 19–21 mm; and large, 29–31 mm) were fed mussels ad libitum or starved (not fed macroscopic food) for ∼1 year in a 3 × 2 factorial experiment. Small and medium-sized sea stars divided throughout the experiment and the ramets of most individuals regenerated sufficiently to divide again after 6–9 months. Unfed sea stars did not undergo fission (with one exception), had a higher mortality rate, and did not grow. Small, fed sea stars grew significantly faster than medium-sized or large individuals. At the end of the experiment, the pyloric caeca index (a measure of nutritional condition) was greater in fed than in unfed animals. Gonads (only testes were observed) developed in medium-sized and large, fed sea stars. Our field and laboratory results indicate that asexual reproduction in A. insignis predominantly occurs in small, well-nourished individuals. Ramets grow gradually through repeated fission and regeneration to a size (mean length of regenerating arms, R r ∼ 20 mm) at which they begin to switch to sexual reproduction as the dominant reproductive mode.  相似文献

Seasonal population dynamics of Mysis mixta Lilljeborg were studied from December 1998 to November 2000 at a 240 m deep site in Conception Bay, Newfoundland. At this depth, temperature was <0°C and salinity between 32.0 and 34.0 psu year-round. The spring phytoplankton bloom began in early or late March and reached a maximum in late April to mid-May. M. mixta exhibited a highly synchronised life cycle, with spawning and mating occurring in October to November, embryos brooded for ~5 months, and juveniles released during spring bloom sedimentation in April and May. Females were semelparous and died at age 2.5 years, following release of juveniles in spring, whereas the majority of mature males died at age 2 years, following mating in November. The biennial life cycle of this population resulted in the presence of two cohorts in the hyperbenthos at any given time. Variation in density and biomass was low among cohorts but high within cohorts, the latter probably due to the high motility of mysids. Densities in 1999 and 2000 were 242±379 and 544±987 ind. per 100 m3 (mean±SD), respectively. Although growth rates were similar between years, rates measured from changes in dry mass differed both seasonally and among life-history stages (range from –4 to 7 mg month–1). Annual secondary production was estimated at 29–73 mg C m–2 in 1999 and 53–205 mg C m–2 in 2000. The annual P/B ratios were 1.62 and 1.19 in 1999 and 2000, respectively.Communicated by J.P. A very high level of vanadium was found to be contained in the polychaete worm Pseudopotamilla occelata collected in 1992–1993 from the Sanriku coast on the main island of Japan. The vanadium concentration (mean±SD=5500±1800 g g-1 dry wt) in the worm's branchial crown which is composed of many bipinnate radioles was approximately 100 times higher than that (mean±SD=60±25 g g-1 dry wt) in the trunk body. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis revealed that a large amount of vanadium was present in the outer potion of the epidermis of the bipinnate radiole. Analytical electron microscopy for a cryo-section of the bipinnate radioles indicated that vanadium was localized in electron-dense deposits in the apical portion of epidermal cells. From an examination of the fine structures, the locality of the electron-dense deposits were found to correspond to that of the apical vacuoles in the epidermal cells. It was concluded that most of the vanadium in P. occelata was contained in the vacuoles of the epidermal cells of the bipinnate radioles.  相似文献

Growth and secondary production of pelagic copepods near Australia's North West Cape (21° 49 S, 114° 14 E) were measured during the austral summers of 1997/1998 and 1998/1999. Plankton communities were diverse, and dominated by copepods. To estimate copepod growth rates, we incubated artificial cohorts allocated to four morphotypes, comprising naupliar and copepodite stages of small calanoid and oithonid copepods. Growth rates ranging between 0.11 and 0.83 day–1 were low, considering the high ambient temperatures (23–28°C). Calanoid nauplii had a mean growth rate of 0.43±0.17 day-1 (SD) and calanoid copepodites of 0.38±0.13 day-1. Growth rates of oithonid nauplii and copepodites were marginally less (0.38±0.19 day–1 and 0.28±0.11 day–1 respectively). The observed growth rates were suggestive of severe food limitation. Although nauplii vastly outnumbered copepodite and adult copepods, copepodites comprised the most biomass. Copepodites also contributed most to secondary production, although adult egg production was sporadically important. The highest copepod production was recorded on the shelf break (60 mg C m-2 day-1). Mean secondary production over both shelf and shelf break stations was 12.6 mg C m-2 day-1. The cryptobenthic reef fish communities from four microhabitats at Orpheus Island, central Great Barrier Reef are described. Eighty-four 0.4m2 samples yielded a total of 368 individuals from 42 species in eight families, with a mean density of 11 individuals m–2 (±1.7SE) and 2.9 species 0.4 m–2 (±0.2SE). Caves contained the highest number of both individuals (120) and species (26), followed by sand/rubble, soft coral, and open reefs. Microhabitat associations included cave and soft coral specialists. Site fidelity in 71 tagged individuals of 4 species was high, with a mean recapture rate of 53% (±8.4SE) remaining within the ~0.4 m2 sampling area after a 48-h period. Behavioural observations also reflect this limited movement, with the dominant mode of behaviour in 7 species being a motionless state (67.5% ±11.6SE), followed by feeding (21.8% ±8.7SE), hiding (6.3% ±1.6SE), and swimming (4.4% ±1.5SE). Two distinct behavioural groups are identified: (1) sedentary forms, characterised by long periods of immobility (5 species); and (2) winnowers, characterised by long feeding bouts (2 species). The fine-scale partitioning of microhabitats, restricted home ranges, and sedentary behaviour of many cryptobenthic reef fish species suggest that this reef fish community exhibits similar patterns of habitat utilisation to their larger reef-fish counterparts, but at a much finer scale.  相似文献

The boreo-Mediterranean amphiurid Amphiura chiajei Forbes occurs in high numbers (700 individuals/m2) in Killary Harbour, a fjordic inlet on the west coast of Ireland. 99.1% of the adult individuals show signs of arm regeneration, while 0.5% show regeneration of the disc. A study of the phenomenon commenced in November 1987 and continued on a seasonal basis until July 1989. Specimens were collected by SCUBA. The overall mean length of regenerated arm tissue over the 21 mo sampling period was 33.5±6.5 mm. Regeneration points were most common in the proximal and in the distal one-third of each arm. An overall mean of 4.21±0.3 arms per individual showed evidence of regeneration, while biomass assays revealed that regenerated tissue accounted for up to 57.9% of the total body weight. Anthropogenic activity (e.g. bottom trawling) may contribute to regeneration, although sub-lethal predation appears to be the main causitive factor of regeneration. Gut analyses of potential predators at the sampling station revealed that fish species (especially the Pleuronectidae) are particularly implicated. This predation seems to vary seasonally, being greatest in the summer months. Since the larger individuals showed the greatest evidence of arm regeneration, it is assumed that such sub-lethal damage is a persistent experience. Whatever the causality, the population of A. chiajei in Killary Harbour is deemed to be highly resilient.  相似文献

The boundaries as well as the macro-epibenthic biomass distribution and composition of a North Adriatic benthic community, dominated by the brittle star Ophiothrix quinquemaculata (D.Ch.), the sponges Reniera ssp., and the ascidians Microcosmus ssp. were determined. Transects totalling more than 80 km (i.e., a recorded area of approximately 150 000 m2) were taken by means of a combined TV- and photocamera sled. The observations, TV-recordings, and photos, together with 392 diver-collected quantitative samples were evaluated. The biomass values were used to establish isobenths. Within the community, the mean biomass, measured as wet weight, amounted to 370 (±73) g/m2 with maxima of more than 1000 g/m2. 64% of the biomass was due to the designating group Ophiothrix-Reniera-Micrcosmus, 87.5% were represented by filter- and suspension-feeding species alone. The mean biomass in the peripheral areas was evaluated at 166 (±62) g/m2. Biomass distribution and composition is examined, and the ecological function and meaning of the observed patterns is discussed.This investigation was carried out within the frame of a joint programme between the Lehrkanzel für Meeresbiologie, University of Vienna, and the Marine Biological Station, Portoroz, University of Ljubljana.  相似文献

Diadema antillarum populations at many Caribbean locations have failed to recover from a wide-spread mortality event during the early 1980s. Quantitative assessments of Diadema in Dominica have only recently begun and can now be put into a regional context. Diadema and benthic algae were monitored in 4-month intervals at six 100 m2 sites, spread over a distance of 38 km, along the west coast of Dominica. Diadema density surveys began in July 2001, while algal cover was monitored as of November 2001. Mean densities of individual sites ranged from 0.81 m−2 (SD=1.02) to 2.98 m−2 (SD=1.33), and overall means increased from 1.50 m−2 (SD=0.12) in 2001, to 2.00 m−2 (SD=0.05) in 2004. The weak negative relationship observed between the Diadema density and macroalgal cover (R 2=0.25, P=0.0030), indicates that Diadema play a limited role in controlling macroalgal species. In contrast, the abundance of turf algae was positively related to low Diadema densities, yet this relationship becomes negative beyond a critical point between 2.0 and 3.0 Diadema per m2 (R 2=0.25, P=0.0075). As of November 2001 size measurements of 100 randomly sampled urchins at each site were included in the surveys, resulting in overall mean test size diameters ranging between 5.54 cm (SD=1.55) and 6.00 cm (SD=0.96). The mean test size diameter per site ranged from 4.54 cm (SD=1.91) at Tarou Point in November 2003 to 6.77 cm (SD=0.83) at Salisbury November 2001. Across all sites except Tarou Point, the most commonly occurring Diadema sizes throughout this study were within 1 cm, in the range between 4.5 and 7.5 cm. It is unclear how this Dominica scenario fits into the context of the pathogen-induced mass mortality events of the 1980s because neither qualitative nor quantitative records exist for that time in Dominica. The recent increase in Diadema density may be a symptom of recovery from Hurricane Lenny. Given the indiscriminant local pressure (affecting herbivorous fishes as well as fish predators of Diadema) Diadema’s role as grazer of algal turfs is highlighted. Investigations have been conducted on the gross morphology and distribution ecology of Corynomorpha prismatica J. Agardh (Rhodophyta, Cryptonemiales) at Lindi, southeast Tanzania. The mean standing crop of the seaweed in the study locality was 518±80.2 g/m2 dry weight. Frond height varied as a function of habitat elevation, being 21.2±1.3, 20.2±2.0, 13.7±2.5 and 4.3±0.4 cm at-15, 5, 25 and 45 cm elevation above spring-tide low-water mark, respectively. Populations of C. prismatica were almost exclusively confined to west-facing vertical rocky surfaces sheltered from direct insolation during the morning hours. The fronds showed a wider variety of morphological appearance than reported in the literature. This was partly due to variations in the patterns of thallus regeneration after wounding. The economic implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The population dynamics, ammonia and inorganic phosphate excretion, and nutrient regeneration of the common jellyfish Aurelia aurita was investigated from 1982 to 1984 in the Kiel Bight, western Baltic Sea. During summer 1982, medusae abundance ranged between 14 and 23 individuals 100 m-3, biomass was estimated at about 5 g C 100 m-3 and the mean final diameter of individuals was 22 cm. Abundance, based on numbers, in 1983 and 1984 was an order of magnitude lower; biomass was less than 2 g C 100 m-3 and jellyfish grew to 30 cm. During the summers of 1983 and 1984, A. aurita biomass constituted roughly 40% of that of the total zooplankton>200 m. In 1982, for which zooplankton data were lacking, it was assumed that medusae biomass was greater than that of all other zooplankton groups. Total ammonia excretion ranged between 6.5 and 36 mol h-1 individual-1, whereas inorganic phosphate release was 1.4 to 5.7 mol h-1 individual-1. Allometric equations were calculated and exponents of 0.93 for NH4–N release and 0.87 for PO4–P excretion were determined. Nitrogen and phosphorus turnover rates were 5.4 and 14.6% d-1, respectively. In 1982, the medusae population released 1 100 mol NH4–N m-2 d-1, about 11% of the nitrogen requirements of the phytoplankton. The inorganic phosphate excretion (150 mol m-2 d-1) sustained 23% of the nutrient demands of the primary producers. In the other two years the nutrient cycling of the medusae was much less important, and satisfied only 3 to 6% of the nutrient demands. It is suggested that in some years A. aurita is the second most important source of regenerated nutrients in Kiel Bight, next to sediment.  相似文献
