We used microscopy, reflectance spectroscopy, pigment analysis, and photosynthesis-irradiance curves measured with variable fluorescence techniques to characterise the endolithic communities of phototrophic microorganisms in the skeleton of three massive corals from a shallow reef flat. Microscopic observations and reflectance spectra showed the presence of up to four distinct bands of photosynthetic microorganisms at different depths within the coral skeleton. Endolithic communities closer to the coral surface exhibited higher photosynthetic electron transport rates and a green zone dominated by Ostreobium quekettii nearest the surface had the greatest chlorophyll pigment concentration. However, Ostreobium was also present and photosynthetically active in the colourless band between the coral tissue and the green band. The spectral properties and pigment density of the endolithic bands were also found to closely correlate to photosynthetic rates as assessed by fluorometry. All endolithic communities were extremely shade-adapted, and photosynthesis was saturated at irradiances <7 μmol photons m−2s−1.  相似文献

Water extracts of a green alga (Ulva sp.) are known to elicit phagostimulatory responses against a seahare Aplysia sp. In 1984 we happened, however, to find that a seahare shows its feeding preference for filter paper on which an ether extract of Ulva sp. had been absorbed. The induction of in vivo chlorophyll a (chl a) fluorescence (change in fluorescence intensity during a time-scale of ms to s) was measured to determine the potential of this technique for assessing the physiological condition of the macroalgae Chondrus crispus and Ulva sp. A gradient in variable fluorescence (P-F 0 =peak minus initial fluorescence, a measure of Photosystem II activity) was found along the frond of C. crispus, the values increasing with distance from the thallus apex. No gradient was observed for Ulva sp. thalli. Nitrogen- or phosphorus-depleted Ulva sp. required a longer dark-conditioning period and had lower values of P-F 0 than did controls. In contrast, no differences were found in P-F 0 of N- or P-depleted C. crispus unless values were normalized to chl a. The irradiance history of C. crispus strongly influenced P-F 0 , even after dark-conditioning: P-F 0 declined by about 70% as the mean daily natural irradiance increased between 2 February and 14 March 1986; a negative correlation was observed between P-F 0 and the photon flux density 1 d prior to the measurement; P-F 0 remained elevated when C. crispus was grown under a low photon flux density; and P-F 0 decreased in thalli within 5 d of transfer from growth under natural irradiance to an incubator with artificial irradiance. Changes in variable fluorescence at different growth irradiances of C. crispus may be due to adaptive changes in the relative absorption cross-section of this alga. Concentrations of a wide range of trace elements: arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, hafnium, nickel, thorium, uranium, zinc and the rare earth elements, cerium, europium, samarium, terbium and ytterbium were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis in the brown alga,Fucus vesiculosus from Eckwarder Hörne, North Sea and from Rügen, Baltic Sea. Another brown alga,Sargassum filipendula from Sri Lanka, Indian ocean (representing an unpolluted control station) was similarly investigated. Cobalt, chromium and nickel concentrations were highest inF. vesiculosus from the North Sea while zinc was highest in samples from the Baltic Sea, reflecting high levels of these elements in coastal waters of the North and the Baltic sea. Cadmium, cobalt, nickel and zinc levels were lowest inS. filipendula from Sri Lanka, probably demonstrating lower levels of those elements in coastal waters. Concentration levels of hafnium, thorium, uranium, and the rare earth elements were highest inS. filipendula. Two years later in 1994,S. filipendula along withUlva sp. (green alga) was resampled from the same sampling site, and in addition to the above elements, six other trace elements (Ag, Ba, Br, Rb, Se and Sr) were determined.Sargassium filipendula showed a particular affinity for Ag, As, Br and Sr. For the other elements, marginal concentration differences were observed betweenS. filipendula andUlva sp., probably reflecting the regional background levels. Substantially higher concentrations of Hf, Th, U, and the rare earths were found again in the 1994Sargassum andUlva samples, reflecting the effect of a substrate rich in rare earth elements. Mesograzers are thought to play a critical role in seagrass beds by preventing overgrowth of ephemeral algae. On the Swedish west coast, eelgrass Zostera marina has decreased in recent decades as a result of eutrophication and increased growth of macroalgal mats (mainly filamentous Ulva spp. and Ectocarpales), with no indication of grazer control of the algae. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of the amphipod Gammarus locusta to control algal blooms during nutrient-enriched and ambient conditions, using a combination of laboratory, field and model studies. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that juvenile and adult G. locusta could consume both Ulva spp. and Ectocarpales, but that consumption of Ulva spp. was significantly higher. Cannibalism was common in individual treatments involving multiple size-classes of G. locusta, but only large, male gammarids consumed smaller juveniles in the presence of Ulva spp. as an alternative food source. However, no negative effects of cannibalism were found on total grazing impact. A model using size-specific grazing rates and growth rates of G. locusta and of Ulva spp. suggests that approximately 62 young juvenile, or 27 adult G. locusta are needed per gram DW of Ulva spp. to control the algal growth during ambient nutrient conditions, and approximately 2.6 times as many gammarids during enhanced nutrient conditions. On the Swedish west coast, densities and mean sizes of G. locusta in eelgrass beds are below these critical values, suggesting that the gammarids will not be able to control the growth of the filamentous macroalgae. However, in the field cage experiment, immigration of juveniles and reproduction of encaged adult G. locusta resulted in unexpectedly high densities of G. locusta (>4,000 individual m−2), and very low biomass of Ulva spp. in both ambient and nutrient-enriched treatments. Although the high numbers of juveniles in all cages precluded any significant treatment effects, this suggests that in the absent of predators, the population of G. locusta can grow significantly and control the biomass of Ulva spp. Furthermore, low grazing of Ectocarpales in the laboratory and high biomass of these filamentous brown algae in the field indicate a preference for the more palatable green algae Ulva spp. This study indicates that the high grazing capacity of G. locusta, in combination with high reproduction and growth rates, would allow the amphipod to play a key role in Z. marina ecosystems by controlling destructive blooms of filamentous green algae. However, high predation pressure appears to prevent large populations of G. locusta in eelgrass beds on the Swedish west coast today.  相似文献

Analyses of gut contents of freshly collected Ligia pallasii (Brandt) showed that the principal foods were encrusting diatoms, insect larvae, occasional members of the same species, and a variety of red and green seaweeds growing in the upper interiidal tidepool habitat. L. pallasii prefers to eat the green seaweed Ulva sp., and the brown alga Nereocystis luetkeana, when given a choice between several seaweeds, although neither of these forms is normally accessible to the isopods. The absorption (assimilation) of food-energy was 78% on a diet of Ulva and 55 to 76% on a diet of N. luetkeana—representative values for an algivorous invertebrate. A correlation analysis on the relationship of feeding preference of L. pallasii with calorific value of 7 potential seaweed foods suggested that feeding preference in this species is related to factors other than energy content of the food. Food preferences of invertebrates are discussed in relation to calorific value, accessibility, and to various nutritional factors.  相似文献

Pieces of the reef coral Montipora verrucosa (Lam.), collected from Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii in 1982, were grown in four low-light treatments (11% sunlight): blue, green, red and the full spectrum of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR); and at high-intensity full PAR (90% sunlight). These acclimated corals were then tested for photosynthetic ability in blue, green, red, and white light. The photosynthetic parameters that were measured were; ligh-saturated photosynthetic rate, the initial slope of the photosynthesis/irradiance curve, the light intensity where these two lines crossed, and dark respiration. While acclimation intensity had a pronounced effect, the results also showed that the color of the acclimation treatment influenced the photosynthetic responses of the corals. The rates of photosynthesis and dark respiration for 7 marine algae and 1 fresh-water alga were measured and compared. The dinoflagellates Glenodinium sp. and zooxanthellae have high dark respiration rates relative to photosynthetic rates, which may decrease their net growth rates. Photorespiration in the 8 algal species was studied by examining the effects of the concentration of oxygen on the rates of photosynthesis, on the incorporation of 14CO2 into the photorespiratory pathway intermediates glycine and serine, and on the postillumination burst of carbon dioxide production and oxygen consumption. A combination of these results indicates that all the algae tested can photorespire, but that Glenodinium sp., Thalassiosira pseudonana, and zooxanthellae either have a photorespiratory pathway different from that proposed for freshwater algae (Tolbert, 1974), or an additional pathway for glycolate metabolism.  相似文献

Despite the plentiful diversity of macroalgae in coastal environments, few studies have examined the in vivo absorption features of common marine macrophytes. Here we report on results of a survey of 12 central California common intertidal and subtidal taxa, representing Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta carried out in the summer of 1988. Computer-assisted analyses were used to obtain fourth-derivative spectra from in vivo absorption spectra determined at room temperature to obtain spectral diagnostics for the different algal divisions and to provide a means to determine whether spectral features could be used to identify stress responses among these plants. Among the Chlorophyta, characteristic maxima for chlorophylls a and b were resolved in all species examined, and a spectral component attributable to siphonaxanthin-like carotenoid(s) was observed in two Ulva species and the coenocytic alga Derbesia marina. Representatives of the Phaeophyta were characterized by similar maxima for chlorophyll a and c, and for fucoxanthin. Among the Rhodophyta, maxima for chlorophyll a, as well as B- and R-type phycoerythrin were resolved. Differences in in vivo absorption features were detected for two tidal populations of Porphyra perforata and Mastocarpus papillatus. High-tidal thalli absorb less green light in regions characterized by phycoerythrin, but have enhanced carotenoid absorption compared with lowtidal thalli. Resolution of spectra by fourth-derivative analysis revealed significant differences in phycoerythrin and carotenoid contents. The spectral changes observed appear to reflect environmental and possibly populational characteristics of these algae. The spectral analyses described here provide robust, non-invasive means to characterize subtle responses of macroalgae to environment in ways not possible previously. In eutrophic areas, green macroalgae are frequently and for long periods arranged in mats, resulting in a steep light gradient. This study investigates the effect of this gradient on physiological characteristics [tissue nitrogen content, maximal photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm), glutathione levels and redox ratio, absorbance and absorption spectra] of the green macroalga Ulva spp. Mats were sampled during the build-up (June), stationary (July), and decomposing (September) phases of a macroalgal bloom in the Veerse Meer, a eutrophic brackish (salinity 15–20 psu) lake in the southwest Netherlands. Water samples were taken for nutrient analyses. At all three sampling dates, the mats were composed almost entirely of Ulva spp.; in September the mats were in decay and covered with silt and epiphytes. In June and July, total dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration (DIN) of the water within the mat was significantly higher than outside the mat. Pronounced vertical differences were found in tissue N, Fv/Fm values, total glutathione levels, glutathione redox ratios, and absorbance. In June and July, tissue N decreased from over 2.2% dry weight (DW; N-sufficient) in the bottom layers to around 1% DW (minimum level for survival) in the top layers. Wide-band absorption increased with depth in the mat and throughout the season, probably due to higher Chl a and b and lutein contents. The shape of the absorption spectrum was similar for all layers. The absorption of the silt/epiphyte film on the top Ulva layer was highest; its absorption spectrum (high absorption in the 500–560 nm range) indicates that the film on the top layers of the macroalgal mats mainly consisted of diatoms. In June, Fv/Fm and the glutathione redox ratio of the algae increased with depth in the layer, while total glutathione decreased. Low Fv/Fm values in the bottom and middle layers in September reflect the bad condition of the algae; the mats were largely decaying. It is concluded that multiple growth-limiting gradients occur in macroalgal mats: upper layers suffer from nitrogen limitation and photoinhibition while bottom layers are light limited. The algae in the mat acclimatize to low light conditions by increasing their absorption through increased pigment contents and by higher photosynthetic efficiency during the build-up and stationary period. This study qualifies the glutathione redox ratio as a promising candidate for stress indicator in macroalgae and provides suggestions for its further development.Communicated by S.A. The ratio of variable fluorescence to maximal fluorescence (F v/F m) was measured during a night and day cycle in five different macroalgae growing in the littoral zone at the Swedish west coast; the green algae Ulva lactuca, Cladophora sp. and Enteromorpha flexousa, the red alga Ceramium nodulosum and the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus. All the green algae and C. nodulosum showed both diurnal fluctuations in F v/F m during days of high light intensities and a significant negative correlation between F v/F m and photon irradiance (PI). An attempt has been made to improve calculations of macroalgal net growth based on carbon fixation (αnet) considering this diurnal change in F v/F m. By assuming that the negative linear correlation between F v/F m and the maximum quantum yield for photosynthesis (Φ) is proportional to that between F v/F m and αnet, it was possible to include the daily variation of αnet due to photoinhibition. To compensate for the variation of F v/F m, a representative value for each day was obtained by weighting all values of F v/F m over the diurnal period in relation to total PI. For all algal species there was a fairly good agreement between this representative value and the F v/F m value measured around noon. As the daily representative F v/F m value showed a negative linear correlation with the daily mean PI, it was possible to correct αnet for differences of daily mean PI. Variabilities in the responses of several South African red and green macroalgae to direct grazing and the responses of one green alga to cues from grazers were tested. We used two feeding experiments: (1) testing the induced responses of three red and one green algae to direct grazing by mesograzers and (2) a multi-treatment experiment, in which the direct and indirect effects of one macrograzer species on the green alga Codium platylobium were assessed. Consumption rates were assessed in feeding assays with intact algal pieces and with agar pellets containing non-polar extracts of the test algae. Defensive responses were induced for intact pieces of Galaxaura diessingiana, but were not induced in pellets, suggesting either morphological defence or chemical defence using polar compounds other than polyphenols. In contrast, exposure to grazing stimulated consumption of Gracilaria capensis and Hypnea spicifera by another grazing species. In the multi-treatment experiment, waterborne cues from both grazing and non-grazing snails induced defensive algal traits in C. platylobium. We suggest that inducible defences among macroalgae are not restricted to brown algae, but that both the responses of algae to grazers and of grazers to the defences of macroalgae are intrinsically variable and complex.  相似文献

For small tube-building amphipods that live on the algae they consume, food and habitat are tightly linked. This study compared two closely related amphipods to determine whether the species’ algal preferences are based on the food value of the algae or on some other aspect of their algal habitat. Ampithoe lacertosa and Peramphithoe humeralis are both abundant on Shannon Point beach (Anacortes, Washington, USA; 48°30.542′ N, 122°41.070′ W) but specialize on different algae. In observations and laboratory experiments conducted July–September 1997, 2007, and 2008, the two species exhibited markedly different choices of food and habitat when offered six common macroalgae. Ampithoe lacertosa ate all algae offered, but preferentially built tubes on the green alga Ulva lactuca. Survival was relatively low among juveniles maintained on single species diets, except when they were fed Mazzaella splendens. Conversely, P. humeralis consumed primarily the brown kelp Saccharina latissima, Alaria marginata, and Desmarestia ligulata and preferred those species for tube building. Juvenile P. humeralis could not survive on a diet of U. lactuca or M. splendens. While A. lacertosa builds simple, temporary tubes and relocates frequently, P. humeralis is a highly thigmotactic species that builds long-term, complex tubes on the alga it prefers to eat. Feeding and habitat preferences of the two species were not clearly linked to nitrogen content of the algae, C:N ratio, or toughness of the algal tissue. Instead, preferences of the species may be related to their mobility and the permanence of the tubes they build. Ampithoe lacertosa and P. humeralis also use different feeding strategies; the former appears to mix algae to produce a high-quality diet, while the latter is more selective and has a capacity for compensatory feeding. The species are abundant on the same protected rocky shores, but specialize on different algae for habitat and food. Results suggest that the nutritional requirements of these sympatric mesograzers differ considerably and even closely related species can exhibit divergent behavioral strategies.  相似文献

Net photosynthesis at 10mol photons m-2 s-1 in each of 24 wavelengths was measured in absolute units by an O2-electrode and corrected for dark respiration to construct action spectra for gross photosynthesis in nine species of algae, which included plants with thin and thick thalli from each of four major pigment groups. The photosynthesis of green and brown algae with thin thalli decreased in green light, but species with thick thalli from these two groups had action spectra which were almost flat, and matched the optical blackness of the thalli but did not reflect the pigment differences between the species. Among the red algae, on the other hand, there was little difference between the action spectra for thin and thick algae. Only wavelengths absorbed by the phycobilin pigments were effective in photosynthesis, even in species (e.g. Chondrus, Phyllophora) which absorbed all visible wavelengths strongly. Maximal quantum yields of 0.10 to 0.12 O2 molecules per absorbed photon were recorded for thin green and brown algae, but thicker algae in these two groups had lower values. Red algae exhibited maximal values close to 0.10 O2 molecules per absorbed photon, irrespective of thallus thickness or phycocyanin content, but the quantum yields of phycoerythrin-rich species in the 600 to 650 nm waveband were lower than those of phycocyanin-rich species.  相似文献

During a preliminary set of experiments (April 1987). I measured short-term (20 d) reproductive responses of laboratory-cultured Capitella sp. 1 at 20°C, at four daily ration levels (0.26 to 2.60 mg of organic nitrogen per bowl), and for four food types: Gerber's mixed cereals, Ulva sp., diatoms, and Tetramen fish food. Average female body size, number of fertile segments, and fecundity were significantly affected both by food type and food ration. Average fecundities ranged from 21 (Gerber, 0.26 mg N d-1) to 448.3 eggs per female (Tetramen, 2.60 mg N d-1). During a second set of experiments (May 1987), I measured the reproductive response of laboratory-cultured Capitella sp. 1 at 20°C at six ration levels of spring and summer sediment-trap material collected in the Patuxent Estuary, Maryland, USA. Worms raised on these two diets failed to reproduce during the period of this experiment. I used simple and miltiple linear-regression models to describe relationships between fecundity and daily rations and macro- (dry wt, C, N) and micronutrients (essential amino- and essential fatty acids). These models were carried out on three data sets corresponding to either 4 or 6 food types. The results suggest that different nutritional factors may be limiting for different foods. However micronutrients and especially essential amino acids probably more aptly describe nutritional limitation of reproduction in Capitella sp. 1.  相似文献

Aqueous effluents from a lead mining and milling operation located in southeastern Missouri, USA, caused a degradation of stream quality despite treatment by a large tailings pond. The receiving stream was choked with algal mats which accumulated unexpectedly large amounts of manganese, lead and zinc. A wastewater treatment system was designed to utilize algae and benthic macrophytes to remove metals from the tailings pond effluent. The system has proved successful and water quality in the receiving stream has been improved to drinking water standards.Experiments were conducted to understand more fully the phenomenon of heavy metal accumulation by algae. Radionuclides (210Pb,203Hg,65Zn,109Cd) were used in conjunction with commercially available microculture apparatus to screen several species of algae for heavy metal accumulation. It was found that all species of algae studied concentrated mercury, green algae were more efficient accumulators of cadmium than blue-green algae, one alga (Chlamydomonas) proved best at removing lead from solution and no alga studied removed zinc.  相似文献

Eggs of Aplysia oculifera (Adams and Reeve, 1850) were incubated in the laboratory. They hatched 8 to 9 d after spawning. Shell length (SL) of the hatched larvae was 102±2 m. Larvae were fed on the unicellular algae Isochrysis galbana in a concentration of 104 cell ml-1, and after 45 to 60 d grew to a maximum SL of 385±11 m. Larvae survived up to 330 d. A total of 12 species of algae from the natural habitat of A. oculifera were examined as metamorphosis inducers. Red algae Dasia sp., Jania sp., Hypnea sp. and Liagora sp. induced metamorphosis in 66.7±21.2, 28.3±17.7, 26.0±18.5 and 4.0±8.0% of the larvae, respectively. Green algae Enteromorpha intestinalis and Ulva sp. induced metamorphosis in 37.0±11.0 and 9.0±10.4% of the larvae, respectively. Cladophora sp. and Codium dichotomum, and the brown algae Padina pavonia, Colpomenia sinuosa, Hydroclathrus clathratus and Cystoseira sp. did not induce metamorphosis. There was no significant difference in the rate of metamorphosis between young (2 to 4 mo) and old (6 to 8 mo) larvae. Postmetamorphic juveniles grew and developed only when fed with E. intestinalis. They grew to a body length of>8 mm in 50 d. Postmetamorphic juveniles did not survive on other algae. The longevity of the planktonic A. oculifera larvae supports the hypothesis that the larvae can exist in the plankton and survive for several months until the next recruitment. The advantage of non-specificity in metamorphosis induction is discussed.  相似文献

At three stations in Bahamas waters, in 1989, 15 to 30% of all the dinoflagellates >20µm diameter observed in near-surface waters fluoresced green under blue excitation light, 55 to 66% fluoresced red, and the remainder did not fluoresce at all. The abundance of these green-fluorescing dinoflagellates ranged from ca 5 to 10 cells l–1 at the study sites. Under UV excitation, however, the dinoflagellates had a blue to blue-green appearance. Almost all the blue-green fluorescing dinoflagellates appeared to be heterotrophic, except for one species,Phalacroma rapa Stein, which also contained red-fluorescing (under blue light) chlorophylla. The emission spectra from all species examined were of three basic types. Type 1 typically had two fluorescence emission peaks (ca 440 and ca 510 nm). Type 2 spectra possessed one sharp peak at 495 nm. Spectra belonging to Type 3 had a broad peak around 470 to 480 nm. The green fluorescence thus is likely caused by different substances in individual species. The attempt to reconstitute observed spectra with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and riboflavin 5-phosphate (FMN) solutions was unsuccessful.  相似文献

We investigated mycosporine amino acid (MAA) involvement as protective sunscreens in spawn of the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela to determine if adult diet and ultraviolet (UV) exposure affected the UV sensitivity of developing embryos. Adults were fed a red alga rich in MAAs (Acanthophora spicifera) or a green alga poor in MAAs (Ulva lactuca). Adults on each diet were exposed for 2 wk to ambient solar irradiance with two types of acrylic filters; one allowed exposure to wavelengths >275 nm (designated UV) and one to wavelengths only >410 nm (designated NOUV). Spawn from each adult group was likewise treated with UV or NOUV and monitored during development for differences in mortality and metabolic rate (measured as oxygen consumption: O2). Also recorded were number of eggs or embryos per capsule, times to hatching, hatching success, size at hatching, and O2 of adults. Spawn from adults eating red algae was almost twice as rich in MAAs as spawn from adults eating green algae, suggesting that MAA content is diet-related. Although overall quantities of MAAs in the spawn reflected MAA contents of the adult diet, specific MAAs were differentially sequestered in the spawn. Thus, porphyra-334, found in high concentration in Aplysia dactylomela's preferred red algal food, was present in only low concentration in the spawn. Conversely, mycosporine-glycine, in low concentration in red algal food, was the most abundant MAA in the spawn. UV treatment of adults had no effect on quantities of MAAs in the spawn. Adults exposed to UV had significantly higher O2s and spawned twice as often. The UV-treated adults produced spawn with significantly higher O2s and their embryos developed to hatching sooner. The only significant effect of UV exposure of the spawn was to reduce the percentage of veligers hatching from 71 to 50%. In the eutrophic Veerse Meer lagoon (The Netherlands) large amounts of free-floating thalli from Ulva spp. are present from May to October. In winter however, no algae seem to occur in the lagoon. Sexual reproduction appears to be negligible, as spore formation and germling growth are observed only sporadically. Results of a field survey showed that in winter, viable Ulva biomass is present buried in the sediment of the shallow parts of the lagoon. Freezing experiments demonstrated that the algae are able to survive temperatures of −5 °C for 2 weeks when kept in darkness. In spring, the buried Ulva thalli are liberated out of the sediment to initiate a bloom. A field experiment indicates that bioturbation by the lugworm Arenicola marina does not stimulate the release of the thalli. Burial and winter survival can explain the rapid increase in Ulva biomass in spring and suggest that the initial spring biomass is one of the major factors determining the maximal biomass in summer.
