Observations on the effects of several environmental conditions in embryonic and larval cultures are reported for the gooseneck barnacle Pollicipes polymerus (Sowerby, 1833). When the growth rates of control embryos kept in finger bowls at ambient-temperature sea water (ca. 12°–15°C) were compared to those of embryos grown under variously modified circumstances, it was found that growth rates were faster under conditions closely simulating the adult barnacle mantle-cavity (e.g. darkness and aeration). Addition of antimicrobial drugs and reduction of egg-mass size also promoted fast growth and development. Nauplii were fed several species of algae; only three species promoted growth to Stage V or older. Naupliar growth was fastest in larvae fed the combination of Prorocentrum micans/Platymonas sp. Larvae fed Prococentrum micans/pennate diatom grew slowest, and most larvae died at Naupliar Stage III. Interactions between algal species may have affected their nutritional value for Pollicipes polymerus nauplii. Less larval activity, slower growth rates, and higher mortality rates were observed in individuals given small amounts of food. The development of embryos and larvae in culture depends greatly on the culture conditions. These conditions should be described if comparison of timetables and envents are to be made between studies.  相似文献

Predation of calanoid copepods on their own and other copepods’ offspring   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Predation of eggs and nauplii by adult copepods is often used to explain unexpected death rates in population dynamics studies, but the phenomenon has been rarely investigated or quantified. Therefore, we studied the predatory feeding of adult females (Acartia clausi, Centropages hamatus, Centropages typicus, and Temora longicornis) on their own and other species’ eggs and young nauplii with different densities of single animal-prey, mixtures of animal-prey and in the presence of diatoms. All species preyed on eggs and nauplii of their own and all other species. Maximal egg predation varied between 7 and 64 eggs fem?1 day?1. Ingestion of Centropages spp. eggs was lowest, potentially due to the spiny egg surface. Maximal feeding rates on nauplii ranged from 5 to 45 nauplii fem?1 day?1. T. longicornis preferred eggs, when eggs and nauplii were offered together at the same densities, and the other predators selected for nauplii. At a diatom concentration of 60 μg C l?1 predation on eggs by C. typicus was higher than without algae, whereas A. clausi and T. longicornis did not change their uptake of eggs. Feeding on nauplii in the presence of diatoms was again enhanced in C. typicus, and unaffected in A. clausi and C. hamatus. T. longicornis reduced its feeding on nauplii in the presence of diatoms. Calculated predation rates, using field abundances of predators and prey, suggest that predation of copepods on their own young stages may account for ca. 30 % of total mortality of young stages in North Sea copepod populations.  相似文献

Resting eggs of Acartia spp. (presumably A. bifilosa Giesbr.) at densities between 65 and 125 eggs cm-2 were found in sediment off the southern coast of Finland and represent the first observations of dormant calanoid eggs in the Baltic Sea. The highest egg densities were found at sediment depths between 4 and 8 cm. The hatching percentage varied between 0 and 90% in the different sediment layers and at different experimental temperatures (13, 16 and 19°C). Some nauplii emerged from the eggs extracted from sediment layers 9 to 10 cm beneath the surface layer and other nauplii emerged from eggs after 82 d of dark storage at 3°C. Light was not needed to trigger hatching; the nauplii were able to hatch in darkness when the eggs were resuspended in filtered seawater. Indirect evidence suggests that the marked spring peak of Acartia spp. nauplii seen in a monitoring data from the years 1973 to 1984 was derived from benthic eggs and not from spawning. The possible mechanisms for induction of hatching and the adaptive benefits of resting egg production for A. bifilosa are discussed.  相似文献

The vertical distributions of eggs, nauplii, copepodites and adults of Calanus helgolandicus (Claus) from five oblique plankton-net hauls taken in May (1980), March and September (1981) and January (1982) at a site in the shelf sea to the south-west of the United Kingdom are described. The water depth is approximately 95 m and becomes thermally stratified during the summer months when a thermocline of ∼6 C° develops. In early spring when the water column was isothermal (∼8 °C), the development of the eggs and nauplii took place below 60 m and a single ontogenetic migration was observed between Nauplius VI (NVI) and Copepodite I (CI). As the temperature of the water increased, this migration occurred in progressively earlier naupliar stages. The eggs were distributed throughout the water column in the profile taken in early May when a 1 C° thermocline occurred between 30 to 40 m. The majority of the NI to NIV stages occurred below 40 m, with the ontogenetic migration taking place in the NIV stage; the NV and NVI stages were found above the thermocline. In September, the eggs were again distributed throughout the water column (101 490 m-2), with a maximum number of >4 500 m-3 occurring in the surface to 5 m depth interval. Nauplius I and II were found at all depths, demonstrating that hatching occurred throughout the water column. The ontogenetic migration in these late-summer profiles took place between the NII and NIII stages, the remainder of the nauplii being found above the thermocline in the top 20 m. This is the first time that an ontogenetic migration, similar to the developmental ascent observed in the naupliar stages of the euphausiid Euphausia superba in the deep ocean, has been shown for a copepod nauplius.  相似文献

Hydrostatic pressure-induced apoptosis on nauplii of Calanus sinicus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of hydrostatic pressure on embryonic development of the calanoid copepod Calanus sinicus was studied. Differences of pressure effect among blastomere stages, 1-cell, 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, 16-cell, blastula and limb-bud stage, were examined under two pressurizing conditions, abruptly (10 atm/min) and gradually (0.1 atm/min) increasing. Egg hatching success, deformity frequency and apoptotic cell degradation of hatched nauplii were examined. Egg hatching success rate was not significantly different between blastomere stages, and also between pressurizing conditions. Deformity frequencies of hatched nauplii were low in the early 1-cell and 2-cell stages, and high in the later blastula and limb-bud stages, in both abrupt and gradual pressurizing conditions. On the other hand, in regard to difference in pressurizing conditions, deformity frequency in gradual pressurizing was significantly higher than that in abrupt pressurizing rate. Gradual pressure increase seems to be more harmful to C. sinicus eggs than abrupt pressure change. Apoptosis induced in nauplii by hydrostatic pressure was detected for the first time in marine zooplankton. The embryos of C. sinicus are sensitive to pressure variations, that is, these embryos are supposed to sink to deeper waters, incurring greater risk of having deformities. In the field, C. sinicus ascend to the surface and spawn at night. By looking from this upward behavior, eggs are spawned at lower pressure and warmer temperature. Probably, the harmless low pressure and warm temperature lead eggs to hatch early and to recruit successfully.  相似文献

Balanus amphitrite was studied in an estuary (Halifax River) in central Florida from October to November 1990, while three other barnacle species were studied on the central coast (Monterey Bay) of California from April 1988 to July 1989. Mean nearest-neighbor distances indicated that in the majority of cases the spatial arrangement of settlers was random for three different balanomorph barnacles-B. amphitrite, B. glandula, and Chthamalus dalli. In Pollicipes polymerus, a lepidomorph species, strong aggregation among settlers was almost always observed. In the three balanomorph species there was no apparent relationship between settler density and the degree of aggregation. In P. polymerus there was a significant positive correlation between settler density and the degree of aggregation. Morphological differences between balanomorph and lepidomorph barnacles may influence the evolution of settlement behavior.  相似文献

Six developmental stages of the bay mussel Mutilus edulis, from fertilization to 32 h after fertilization, and also unfertilized eggs, were exposed for 1 h to different concentrations of the insecticide Sevin and its first hydrolytic product, 1-naphthol. After exposure, the larvae or eggs were separated from the pesticide solution and returned to clean water. At 48 h after fertilization, the numbers of normal and abnormal larvae were determined and 1-h EC50 values (the effective concentrations that caused anomalous development of 50% of the test animals) were calculated. The most sensitive developmental stage was the one that occurred shortly after fertilization at the time of appearance of the first polar body. Thereafter, sensitivity decreased as age increased. The EC50 of Sevin for the first polar body stage and 32-h stage were 5.3 and 24.0 mg/l of Sevin, respectively. The EC50 of l-naphthol for the first polar body stage was 5.2 mg/l. Effects of the toxicants on development were characterized by disjunction of blastomeres, a reduction in the rate of development, and asynchronous and unaligned cleavages.  相似文献

Reproduction in the viviparous apodid sea cucumber Leptosynapta clarki was examined in Grappler Inlet, Bamfield, Vancouver Island, Canada from July 1989 through July 1991. The reproductive cycle of L. clarki is annual with gonad growth during the summer months. Male sea cucumbers spawn during November and December and internally fertilize, through as yet undetermined means, the oocytes within the ovary. Embryonic development is rapid, so that within 2 wk fertilized eggs reach the pentactula stage. Pentactulae have an open mouth and anus and actively move in the ovarian tubules feeding on droplets and fluid derived from the resorption of unfertilized eggs. Histological examination of gametogenesis shows similar development to that found in non-brooding holothurians. However, the protandric sex change observed in some male L. clarki after spawning and changes to the overian wall structure prior to fertilization are previously undescribed in sea cucumbers.  相似文献

Scrobicularia plana Da Costa and Donax vittatus L. were reared in the laboratory through settlement. Fertilizable eggs were obtained by perfusing the ovary with 5% 0.1 M ammonium hydroxyde in sea water. S. plana eggs have a thick chorion, inside which the early larval stages develop; they hatch as straight-hinge larvae more than 60 h after fertilization. This brood protection is considered to be an adaptation to osmotic pressure changes and pollution in the environment. D. vittatus eggs have a very thin chorion and are unprotected. Further development is planktotrophic and very similar for the two species. Under laboratory conditions, the pediveliger stage is attained 3 weeks after fertilization and settlement occurs 1 week thereafter. S. plana spat stop growing until a suitable substratum is available. Meanwhile they undergo a byssus drifting important for postlarval dispersion. Post larvae resume growth as soon as a small quantity of fine sand is added to the rearing jar. The exhalant siphon is developed first, when the post larvae reach a length of 600 m; the inhalant siphon is formed later, at a length of approximately 900 m. Evolution from the larval hinge to the juvenile hinge stage occurs sooner in S. plana than in D. vittatus. Comparison of laboratory larval development with field development indicates that spawning occurs in June and August for S. plana in North Wales (UK).  相似文献

The brown alga Fucus ceranoides L. was studied in several estuaries on the Isle of Man (Great Britain) in the summers of 1989 and 1990. The objective were to determine the success of natural fertilization in a dioecious organism with external fertilization and to contribute to our understanding of processes such as polyspermy blocks and propagule settlement under natural conditions. Gamete release occurred on a semilunar cycle near full and new moons; at such times, settlement densities of 500 zygotes cm-2 d-1 were common. Gamete release was largely restricted to daytime high tides. Fertilization success was high: about 95 to 100% of all eggs released were fertilized, and 1 to 9% of these zygotes were polyspermic. The incidence of polyspermy increased towards the upper limit of F. ceranoides in the estuary of the river Neb; this may be significant in the context of the Na+-dependent block against polyspermy. Levels of polyspermy were not related to fertilization success (R2=0.06). Rates of pronuclear migration and karyogamy determined in the laboratory were used as an internal clock to estimate when eggs were fertilized in the field. Most eggs were fertilized 30 to 120 min after plants were immersed by the incoming tide, which corresponded to the period 60 min before to 30 min after high tide. The high success of fertilization suggests that polyspermy blocks are important in nature, and, in combination with the high settlement of zygotes, shows that population size in F. ceranoides is determined by post-settlement mortality, not by propagule availability.  相似文献

The effects of two carbon-based nanomaterials, nano-sized carbon black (nCB), and single-layer graphene oxide (GO) on settlement of Amphibalanus amphitrite (Cirripedia, Crustacea) cypris larvae (cyprids) were assessed after 24, 48, and 72 h of exposure. Additionally, the effects of these nanomaterials on the mortality and swimming behaviour of the nauplius larvae (nauplii) of the same organism were determined after 24 and 48 h. The data indicate that nCB is more effective as a potential antisettlement agent than single-layer GO; moreover, nCB did not show any adverse effects on the larvae. The swimming behaviour of II stage nauplii of A. amphitrite exposed to a suspension of nCB was inhibited only at very high nCB concentrations (≥0.5 mg/mL). Single-layer GO, on the contrary, showed lower antisettlement effects and was more active in altering the survival and inhibiting the swimming behaviour of the nauplii. An indication of the toxic or non-toxic mechanisms of the antisettlement properties of both of these nanomaterials is provided by the reversibility of the antisettlement activity. In conclusion, we propose nCB as an innovative antifouling nanomaterial that shows low toxicity towards the model organism (crustaceans) used in this study.  相似文献

Pelagic eggs of the scaled sardine Harengula pensacolae (Goode and Bean), have been hatched and reared in the laboratory for the first time. Larvae were reared in two 75 l aquaria under constant illumination, at an average temperature of 26.2°C. Zooplankton collected in a 35 mesh net was fed to the newly hatched larvae, and the diet was supplemented later with Artemia salina nauplii and a pelleted food. Larvae hatched at 4 mm TL (total length), and metamorphosed about 25 days later at 25 to 30 mm TL. Survivors averaged 76 mm TL 100 days after hatching. Of the 500 incubated eggs, 2.8% survived until 20 days, after which no significant natural mortality occurred. Sources of natural mortality included starvation, a copepod parasite (Caligus sp.), and injuries from contact with the sides of the tank. Larvae began feeding at 4.5 mm TL on copepod nauplii averaging 62 in body width. Scaled sardines were photopositive throughout the larval stage.Contribution No. 149, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Tropical Atlantic Biological Laboratory, Miami, Florida 33149, USA.  相似文献

Although the three examined species of Argyrotheca are quite common in the Mediterranean, little is known about their reproductive cycles. This study shows that Argyrotheca cordata and Argyrotheca cistellula have continuous breeding activity, indicated by the occurrence of ripe eggs and larvae in their brood pouches throughout the year. The absolute number of larvae found in the brood pouches of both species corresponds to the adult's size. The third species examined, Argyrotheca cuneata, tends to breed in autumn, with larvae only present in September and November, but the sample-size was small. Larval development is very similar in all three Argyrotheca species, each embryo going through a gastrula stage, a two-lobed and a three-lobed stage. Before leaving the brood pouch, the larvae have an apical lobe with a girdle of elongated cilia, a mantle lobe with a midventral band of cilia and a pedicle lobe without ciliation. The larvae of A. cordata and A. cuneata possess four bundles of larval setae, whereas A. cistellula shows no setae at all. Received: 6 November 1998 / Accepted: 15 March 1999  相似文献

The morphology of the grooming limbs, the 5th pair of pereiopods, was studied by scanning electron microscopy in six species of porcellanid crabs, Petrolisthes cabrilloi, P. cinctipes, P. armatus, P. galathinus, Pachycheles monilifer, and Pachycheles rudis, and their function was inferred by comparison with findings from previous studies. Grooming limb morphology was almost identical among the four Petrolisthes species and differed little compared to that of the two Pachycheles species. The 5th pereiopods bore a basal tuft of mechanoreceptive setae, three different types of grooming setae armed with setules or denticles, two types of smooth sensilla for location and identification of fouling objects, and a terminal, toothed chela for picking firmly attached objects off the gills and body. The grooming limb was extremely flexible and could reach most parts of the body, including the gill chamber on the opposite side. The grooming limb morphology in Petrolisthes cabrilloi is consistent with its wellknown effectiveness in preventing parasitism by the rhizocephalan Lernaeodiscus porcellanae. Grooming setae remove recently attached cyprids, while the chela can grip and remove the much smaller, firmly attached kentrogons. Porcellanid crabs not known to host rhizocephalans, however, had grooming limbs almost identical to those of Petrolisthes cabrilloi despite their previously demonstrated failure to prevent settlement and infestation by L. porcellanae larvae. The effectiveness of P. cabrilloi in removing kentrogons, therefore, seems also to depend on behavioral adaptations whereby this species recognizes the parasite larvae as high-threat objects.  相似文献

Bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) eggs were stocked at densities from 0.5 to 32.0 l-1 and larvae were fed on wild plankton (copepod nauplii) in concentrations that ranged from 50 to 5000 prey l-1. Lined sole (Achirus lineatus) eggs were stocked at 0.5 to 16.0 l-1 and larvae were fed wild plankton at concentrations from 50 to 1000 prey l-1. Some larvae of each species survived at all stock and food levels to the transformation stage at 16 days after hatching. Survival rates for both species exceeded 40% when food concentration was 1000 l-1 or higher. Growth and dry weight yields also increased significantly at the higher food concentrations. Effects of initial stocking density were not well defined, but both survival and growth decreased at the highest stocking rates. Standardized culture of bay anchovy and lined sole larvae can be based on a food concentration of 1000 copepod nauplii l-1 to routinely produce healthy larvae.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine the morphology and hatching success of eggs, either spawned by freshly caught planktonic copepods or recovered from bottom sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Collections were made between August 1992 and September 1995. Eggs of nine species were described and these differed in their diameter, color and surface attributes. Three types of eggs were distinguished: subitaneous, diapause, and delayed-hatching. Three species, Labidocera aestiva Wheeler, Acartia tonsa Dana, and Centropages velificatus (Oliveira) produced only subitaneous eggs. Hatching success varied greatly among these species. Two species, Labidocera mirabilis Fleminger and Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) produced diapause eggs and subitaneous eggs. The length of the refractory phase of the diapause eggs differed greatly both within and between these two species. A third type of dormant egg, delayed-hatching, was recognized in Labidocera scotti Giesbrecht and Pontella meadi Wheeler. The existence of delayed-hatching eggs may be an adaptive response of subtropical species to less seasonal fluctuation. Based upon morphological characteristics of the eggs and rearing of nauplii to an identifiable stage, benthic dormant eggs of eight species of calanoid copepods were also identified. Effects of maternal food environment and season were examined during spring and autumn on females, eggs and nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus, in different natural prey suspensions or cultures of Rhodomonas baltica. Females sampled in spring were in general larger, had higher protein content, and showed higher egg production and hatching rates, than in autumn. The cumulative egg production was almost double in spring compared to autumn (females fed R. baltica). Females had higher content of free amino acids (FAA) and free essential amino acids (EAA) in autumn than in the spring. Also, the FAA contents in eggs and nauplii were higher in autumn than in spring. In contrast, the composition of EAA in eggs was constant between seasons, indicating maternal regulation. The highest cumulative egg production was correlated with a high similarity in the free pool of EAA in the food suspension and the female copepod. Thus, the data support the hypothesis that similarity in the free pool of EAA of diet and female promotes high fecundity and egg hatching success in C. finmarchicus.  相似文献
