Experiments were conducted to examine the morphology and hatching success of eggs, either spawned by freshly caught planktonic copepods or recovered from bottom sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Collections were made between August 1992 and September 1995. Eggs of nine species were described and these differed in their diameter, color and surface attributes. Three types of eggs were distinguished: subitaneous, diapause, and delayed-hatching. Three species, Labidocera aestiva Wheeler, Acartia tonsa Dana, and Centropages velificatus (Oliveira) produced only subitaneous eggs. Hatching success varied greatly among these species. Two species, Labidocera mirabilis Fleminger and Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) produced diapause eggs and subitaneous eggs. The length of the refractory phase of the diapause eggs differed greatly both within and between these two species. A third type of dormant egg, delayed-hatching, was recognized in Labidocera scotti Giesbrecht and Pontella meadi Wheeler. The existence of delayed-hatching eggs may be an adaptive response of subtropical species to less seasonal fluctuation. Based upon morphological characteristics of the eggs and rearing of nauplii to an identifiable stage, benthic dormant eggs of eight species of calanoid copepods were also identified. The effect of anoxia on the viability (as evidenced by hatching) of newly spawned and fully developed subitaneous eggs of three species of copepods, Acartia tonsa (Dana), Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg), and Labidocera aestiva (Wheeler) was determined for eggs produced in the laboratory by adults collected from inshore waters of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico between January and August 1992. Hatching success decreased to 50% or less when eggs were exposed to oxygen concentrations <0.06 mll-1 for more than 12 d, except for newly spawned eggs of L. aestiva, which still showed 50% survival after 32 d of exposure to anoxia. For all three species, newly spawned eggs survived exposure to anoxia longer than fully developed eggs. The results indicate that the increasing occurrence of anoxia in estuarine and coastal waters could have a major impact on the population growth of these important food web organisms.  相似文献

Diapause embryos in the neustonic copepodAnomalocera patersoni   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The neustonic copepodAnomalocera patersoni Templeton, collected from the Gulf of Naples from January to May 1988, laid subitaneous and diapause eggs that were of equal size and dark and smooth in appearance. In January and February, most eggs were subitaneous and hatched within 2 to 3 d at room temperature. Conspicuous numbers of diapause eggs were first obtained in February when several clutches contained a second egg type which did not hatch in a subitaneous manner. By March and April, most clutches contained only diapause eggs. Transmission electron microscope studies of subitaneous and diapause eggs revealed striking morphological differences. Subitaneous eggs had a thin vitelline coat covering the plasma membrane, whereas diapause eggs were enveloped by a complex four-layer structure which is assembled after spawning and which probably serves as a protective shell during dormancy. No major morphological differences were discernible in the oogenic cycle of females spawning either of the two egg types. Diapause eggs were shown to be embryos in early stages of development, and segmentation of these embryos was arrested for the entire 6-mo period of investigation. Diapause eggs hatched after 7 mo of dormancy.  相似文献

Close to 50 species of marine Calanoid copepods have been reported to produce diapause eggs (Engel and Hirche in J Plankton Res 26:1083–1093, 2004); eggs that are viable but require a refractory phase before they hatch, sometimes after months. Diapause eggs are often described as morphologically different with respect to egg membrane ultrastructure and having a thicker egg shell with surface ornamentation as opposed to the smooth shell found in subitaneous eggs that hatch within days (Belmonte in J Mar Syst 15:35–39, 1998; Chen and Marcus in Mar Biol 127:587–597, 1997; Castro-Longoria in Crustaceana 74:225–236, 2001). Egg production rates, egg surface ornamentation, and hatching success were monitored in large aquaculture fish enclosures during winter with close to zero water temperatures (N57°). Surprisingly, all female copepods (Acartia spp.—presumably A. tonsa, and Centropages hamatus) produced eggs all through the winter with no obvious pattern with respect to light, temperature and food availability, and no diapause eggs were observed. However, individual females produced several categories of eggs with or without surface spines even within the same egg batch as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Four egg categories were distinguishable: ‘no spines’, smooth eggs; ‘short spines’, 5–15 μm long; ‘truncated spines’, with the spine tips cut-off <10 μm long; and ‘long spines’, up to 30 μm long. All egg categories remained unchanged with respect to surface structures from when we took them out of the incubation bottles until they hatched. In general, the frequency of ‘no spines’ was 10–40%, and most eggs were ornamented with ‘short-’ or ‘long spines’. Further, a given egg can be ornamented with all types of surface spines simultaneously, which might even be a fifth egg category. The different egg categories were all able to hatch within days when exposed to normoxic conditions suggesting that they were subitaneous.  相似文献

Transmission electron microscope studies on the morphology of subitaneous and diapause eggs in the neustonic copepodPontella mediterranea, collected in coastal waters of the Gulf of Naples from May to December 1986, revealed striking structural differences between the two egg types and the existence of a third egg type that was morphologically similar to a diapause egg but which hatched within 2 to 3 d. In smooth, subitaneous eggs the plasma membrane was surrounded by a thin outer chorion as compared to the thick and highly complex four-layer structure enveloping subitaneous eggs with short spines, and diapause eggs. This coat may be assembled just prior to or after deposition since the morphology of developing oocytes was similar in females laying either subitaneous or diapause eggs. The only other major structural difference between the two egg types was the presence of numerous, disc-like bodies in the ooplasm of diapause eggs. Development was arrested for at least 3 mo, prior to the initiation of the first cleavage, suggesting that these eggs were kept dormant by some endogenous and, possibly, structural mechanism preceeding the termination of diapause.Dedicated to B. A warm-water neritic calanoid copepod, Tortanus forcipatus, has been found to lay two physiologically different types of eggs (subitaneous and diapause eggs), which are separately spawned in response to different seasonal environmental conditions. Subitaneous eggs are produced when the planktonic populations are at their numerical maxima, and are only shed until late summer. After peak spawning, true resting eggs are spawned which undergo diapause for 1 to 3 months. The eggs recover from their diapause around mid-winter, but hatching does not take place until the water temperature at the sea bottom exceeds 15°C in early summer.  相似文献

Cod (Gadus morhua L.) eggs may develop and hatch within temperatures of −1.5 to 12 °C, but little is known about the effects of very low temperatures on larval characteristics. Eggs of the Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) were incubated at 1, 5 or 8 °C from Day 1 after fertilisation until hatching, and transferred to 5 °C after hatching. Histological samples of the axial musculature were taken at hatching and 5 d after hatching, and the data on muscle cellularity from these samples were related to survival and hatching, size, developmental data and viability of the yolk sac larvae. All larvae hatched at the same developmental stage. Incubation of eggs at 1 °C produced shorter larvae with a larger yolk sac and more, small deep fibres at hatching than larvae from eggs incubated at 5 or 8 °C. The larval size difference was still present 5 d after hatching, a time at which the larvae from 1 °C-incubated eggs were less developed and less resistant to an acute viability stress test (65 ppt salinity). Although there were no differences between temperature groups in number and size of muscle fibres 5 d after hatching, the deep fibres of the 1 °C-group contained less myofibrils than the two other groups. The phenotype of the larvae at hatching was thus affected within these incubation temperatures. Although all groups were transferred to the same temperature after hatching, the lowest egg incubation temperature (1 °C) still had a negative effect 5 d after hatching, as these larvae were both smaller, less resistant to stress and had less functional muscles at the time of first feeding. Our conclusion is therefore that 1 °C is close to, or below, the lower thermal tolerance limit for normal functional development of Northeast Arctic cod. The results are discussed in relation to larval viability and recruitment of this species in the wild. Received: 4 February 1998 / Accepted: 10 July 1998  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the development and hatching of resting eggs of the Ponto-Caspian Cercopagis pengoi was studied experimentally in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Morphological changes were monitored as the development of the resting eggs proceeded. Sexual reproduction of the C. pengoi population in the Gulf of Finland was evaluated by combining the data from hatching experiments and resting egg abundances in the sediment. Development time of resting eggs was dependent on temperature: increase in the temperature shortened the time needed until hatching. Hatching success was also dependent on incubation temperature. Almost sixfold increase in hatching success was detected when temperature increased two degrees above the storage temperature. Average resting egg abundances varied between 0.16 and 0.49 eggs cm−3 in the 0–6 cm sediment layer.  相似文献

The functional response of the aspects of reproductive success of a southwestern Baltic population of Acartia tonsa (Copepoda: Calanoida) was quantified in the laboratory using wide ranges in temperatures and salinities. Specifically, daily egg production (EP, # female−1 day−1) was determined for 4 or 5 days at 18 different temperatures between 5 and 34°C and the time course and success of hatching were evaluated at 10 different temperatures between 5 and 23°C. The effect of salinity (0 to 34 psu) on egg hatching success was also examined. The highest mean rates of EP were observed between 22 and 23°C (46.8–50.9 eggs female−1 day−1). When studied at 18 psu, hatching success of eggs increased with increasing temperature and was highest (92.2%) at 23°C. No hatching was observed for eggs incubated at low temperatures (≤12°C) that were produced by females acclimated to temperatures ≤10°C indicating a possible thermal threshold between 10.0 and 13.0°C below which only the production of diapause (or low quality) eggs exists in this population. When tested at 18°C, the hatching success of eggs incubated at 15 different salinities increased asymptotically with increasing salinity and was maximal (81.4–84.5%) between 17 and 25 psu. The high reproductive success observed over wide ranges in temperatures and salinities in this Baltic population demonstrates one of the mechanisms responsible for the cosmopolitan distribution of this species within productive, estuarine and marine habitats.  相似文献

Distribution, abundance and age of diapause eggs from three species of calanoid copepods (in particular from Acartia spp. most likely Acartia tonsa, and Centropages hamatus and less numerous from Temora longicornis) were recorded in sediment profiles by enumerating hatched nauplii from incubated sediment samples. Phytoplankton pigments and 210Pb and 137Cs analyses indicated that the sedimentation regimes were different between two southern and two northern stations of the island Funen, Denmark. Significant variations in vertical distribution, abundance and mortality of diapause eggs were found between the stations. Dating of the sediment cores suggested a ~70-year maximum age of viable eggs on the northernmost stations, and ~28 year at the southernmost stations. The eggs exhibited a significantly higher mortality rate at the southernmost stations compared with the northernmost, 0.35–0.53 year−1 vs. 0.07–0.08 year−1 with no systematic pattern among species. The differences in abundance, mortality and age of the diapause eggs are suggested to be due to the sediment characteristics in which they are buried.  相似文献

A San Diego population of the opisthobranch mollusc Alderia modesta (Lovén, 1844) exhibits poecilogony, the presence of two development modes within a single species. In spring, half of the adults spawned masses containing ∼300 eggs with a mean diameter of 68 μm. After 3 d, these egg masses hatched planktotrophic veligers with a maximum shell dimension of 116 μm. The remaining adults spawned masses containing ∼30 eggs with a mean diameter of 105 μm. These egg masses hatched after 5 to 6 d, releasing lecithotrophic larvae with a maximum shell dimension of 186 μm. About 1% of field-collected adults produced mixed clutches containing a continuum of larval sizes, spanning the size extremes of planktotrophy and lecithotrophy and hatching larvae with a mean maximum shell dimension of 152 μm. Adults producing planktotrophic and lecithotrophic larvae were interfertile, and no hybrid breakdown was observed through the F3 generation. When starved, adults which previously produced only lecithotrophic larvae switched to producing planktotrophic larvae or mixed clutches with both planktotrophic and lecithotrophic larvae. Sequence-polymorphisms from a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene support the conclusion that the two reproductive morphs represent a single species. Most of the lecithotrophic larvae and a small percentage of the larvae from mixed clutches were metamorphically competent within 3 d of hatching. A. modesta is the only molluscan species as yet known to have both planktotrophic and pelagic lecithotrophic development within a single natural population. We experimentally investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing, deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Intact sediment cores with in situ density and species composition of zooplankton resting eggs and benthic fauna were collected in the northern Bothnian Sea, part of the Baltic Sea. We removed as many M. affinis as possible from the cores and then added different numbers of M. affinis to the cores to generate a range of densities. The cores were exposed to different densities of M. affinis for either 3 or 40 days, after which the hatched zooplankton was registered. One subset of the cores were initially incubated under low temperature (2–3 °C, to prevent hatching) for 37 days (the resting phase), to allow for effects of M. affinis on unhatched resting eggs. These cores were then incubated under higher temperature (13 °C) for 3 days (the hatching phase), to induce hatching and allow for effects on hatching or hatched specimens. In a second subset of cores with the same time and temperature schedule, the M. affinis density was experimentally reduced at the start of the hatching phase, to evaluate the effect of M. affinis during the hatching phase. To a third subset of cores, we immediately initiated the hatching phase, without an experimental resting phase, to evaluate the effects induced during the resting phase. The most common zooplankton species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda), followed by Bosmina longispina maritima (Cladocera). In all cores that were subjected to a resting phase, the numbers of hatched E. affinis were log-linearly negatively related to density of M. affinis. An increase of M. affinis density from 1,000 to 5,000 individuals m−2, normal field densities, reduced the hatching by 60–70%. The negative impact was mainly exerted during the hatching phase, suggesting predation on, burial of or physical injury of hatching nauplii or eggs in a late development stage as likely mechanisms. Also, the number of B. longispina maritima that hatched was reduced by M. affinis during the hatching phase, but no clear relation to density of M. affinis could be identified. The results show that M. affinis can reduce recruitment to zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Such impact by the benthos on resting stages of zooplankton is therefore a potentially significant link between the benthic and pelagic systems. The respiratory physiology of summer diapausing eggs of the neustonic copepodAnomalocera patersoni, maintained under constant temperature (13 °C) and light (12 h light:12 h dark) conditions, was characterized by a bell-shaped curve, with low O2 uptake levels at the beginning of dormancy. This was followed by a steady rise in O2 consumption with maximum levels of 0.002 l O2 embryo–1 h–1 70 d after spawning. A slow diminution in O2 uptake then occurred until Day 150 when minimum values of 0.0003 l O2 embryo–1 h–1 were recorded, coinciding with the hatching of the first embryos. Embryos continued to hatch asynchronously up to 360 d from the moment of egg laying. When eggs were subjected to 20 °C, the respiratory activity was almost three times higher than at 13 °C, even though both respiratory curves were similar. The elevated metabolism in eggs kept at 20 °C led to death of the embryos possibly due to a total depletion of metabolic reserves. ATP content also differed at the two temperatures. Diapause eggs kept at 20 °C showed no rapid rise in ATP content as opposed to those kept at 13 °C. The results of temperature shock experiments, in which eggs were first kept at winter temperatures for several weeks, after which the temperature was raised to 20 °C for another number of weeks prior to a second period of chilling at 13 °C, showed that as long as embryos were kept at 20 °C no hatching occurred. By contrast, hatching was observed after 10 d following the resumption of winter temperatures, suggesting that low environmental temperatures are an essential prerequisite for hatching of these eggs. The type of diapause inA. patersoni differs considerably from the one described in insects and in another neustonic copepod,Pontella mediterrana. In this case, there is a U-shaped respiratory curve with greatest O2 consumption prior to the onset or upon breaking of diapause. Differences in the two types of diapause seem to involve not only differences in O2 consumption levels but also in the sequence of metabolic changes with time and the metabolic requirements during sommer and winter dormancy.  相似文献

Subitaneous eggs of the copepod Acartia bifilosa were incubated at low oxygen concentrations and in anoxic conditions to study the induction of dormancy and the longevity of the resting eggs. Eggs were incubated in hypoxic conditions for 8 or 10 days, and also in anoxic conditions for 8–441 days. After the anoxic and hypoxic incubations, the unhatched eggs were subsequently incubated in normal oxygen conditions to reveal the viability of the eggs. Low oxygen concentrations (< 0.17 ml l–1) induced dormancy in the eggs: they did not hatch at these concentrations in the hypox experiments but did hatch afterwards. Eggs survived well in anoxic conditions: after 10 months at 4°C, approximately 40% of the eggs still hatched, while some eggs survived in anoxic conditions for a year at 13°C, which is longer than hitherto reported for subitaneous eggs of any copepod species. Also, sediment that contained eggs of copepods was stored in the laboratory to reveal the long-term survival of the eggs. When incubated after 1.8 years storage, more than 40% of A. bifilosa eggs hatched. The study shows that subitaneous eggs may also be used as a survival strategy on seasonal time scales. This may partly explain why A. bifilosa does not produce diapause eggs in the present study area in the northern Baltic Sea.Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献

Eggs and larvae of the Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis Kaup, were reared from fertilization until the end of metamorphosis, which occurs by Day 17 after hatching at 19.5 °C. Changes in energy content and biomass quality were studied in terms of dry weight and of carbon, nitrogen and energy content. S. senegalensis spawned eggs of about 1 mm diameter which hatched 38 h after fertilization. Average dry weight of individual eggs was 46 μg, the chorion accounting for about 18% of total dry weight. Gross energy of recently fertilized sole eggs was approximately 1 J egg−1. From fertilization to hatching, eggs lost 8% of their total energy (chorion not included). After hatching, larvae lost 14% of their initial energy until the start of feeding which occurred about 48 h afterwards. The principal components catabolized during embryogenesis were carbon-rich compounds that decreased by 26%, while nitrogen-rich compounds decreased by only 10% and were practically unaltered from hatching to the start of feeding. Feeding larvae displayed constant growth during the period studied (specific growth rate on a dry weight basis was 0.26 d−1). The relative proportion of carbon and nitrogen content revealed an accumulation of high energy compounds in the days before metamorphosis. By Day 14, the energy content reached values similar to those of recently hatched embryos, but decreased again during metamorphosis. Received: 10 June 1998 / Accepted: 28 January 1999  相似文献

Adult great spotted cuckoos, Clamator glandarius, frequently damage one or more eggs of their magpie host, Pica pica, without removing or eating them. The presence of damaged host eggs could signal parasitism thereby increasing the probability that the parasitic egg is ejected. This hypothesis was tested by experimentally introducing a model cuckoo egg with or without damaged host eggs. Magpie responses to experimental parasitism did not differ significantly between treatments implying that damaged host eggs are not used by magpies to assess parasitism. We followed the fate of magpie eggs naturally damaged by the great spotted cuckoo or experimentally damaged by us. Host response was very similar for naturally or experimentally damaged host eggs, but varied significantly according to the type of egg damage, eggs being removed more frequently when pecked than crushed, while cracked eggs were never removed. However, the egg damage that most readily causes egg removal is albumen leakage. Received: 30 November 1998 / Received in revised form: 7 June 1999 / Accepted: 12 June 1999  相似文献

Reproductive characteristics of cirromorph octopuses, assigned to the species Opisthoteuthis grimaldii, were sampled as a commercial fishing by-catch on the Hebrides Slope, west of Scotland. A total of 254 specimens (99 female, 155 males), retrieved from bottom trawls fished at 750 to 1500 m depth, were examined. A maximum of 2097 eggs was counted in a single female ovary (mean female body weight 1242.8 g), most of them <1 mm in length. At egg lengths over 1 mm, diminishing numbers of eggs were present in 1 mm size categories up to a maximum of ≈10 mm. At body sizes >500 g (wet wt), and in every female >750 g (max. female weight recorded in the sample was 2959 g), a succession of unattached eggs was present in the proximal oviduct and a single, unattached mature egg occupied the tip of the distal oviduct. These females were assumed to be in spawning condition and the characteristics of egg distribution in the reproductive tract to be consistent with sequential release of individual eggs and continuous spawning throughout the growth period and lifespan of the mature octopus. In pre-spawning females there was a positive relationship between estimated egg numbers and maximum egg size. After the onset of spawning there was no significant further increase in estimated potential fecundity over the body-size range 500 to 3000 g. Follicular sheaths remaining in the ovary after release of eggs into the proximal oviduct were counted and used to estimate the total number of eggs released up to the time of capture. Follicular sheaths first appeared at 500 to 650 g body weight and increased steeply in number to >1000 in females >1500 g. Two individuals were found with ovarian follicular sheaths but with no terminal egg in the distal oviduct; these were assumed to have released their egg just before capture. Summation of the number of follicular sheaths counted plus the number of eggs estimated as remaining attached in the ovisac, provided a revised estimate of total potential fecundity and raised the estimate for any individual to a maximum of 3202 eggs (mean = 1396 eggs).  Early development of the Antarctic sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri was examined under two differ-ent culture regimes: one to simulate development near-bottom (“demersal development”) and the other to simulate the development of embryos in the water column (“pelagic development”). When embryos of both treatments reached the hatching blastula stage at 5 d post-fertilization (−1.5 °C), the blastulae that had undergone demersal development evidenced significant differences (by ANOVA or suitable non-parametric comparison) in the following: a thicker blastoderm layer (12%, P < 0.001), higher ash-free dry weights (19%, P < 0.01), lower mass-specific respiration rates (50%, P < 0.001), higher incorporation rates of 35S-methionine into protein (23%, P < 0.003), and a differential pattern of protein synthesis. When embryos developed demersally, they remained in the jelly-coat material released with the eggs at spawning. Quantitative isolation of this jelly-coat material in S. neumayeri demonstrated that it contained a significant amount of organic matter, 115 ng ash-free dry mass per egg, equivalent to 17% of the egg's initial organic mass. Uptake of external nutrients during embryogenesis may be a significant component of the physiological energetics of this polar invertebrate by allowing the utilization of jelly-coat material released by a female during spawning. Seasonally recurrent and persistent hypoxic events in semi-enclosed coastal waters are characterized by bottom-water dissolved oxygen (d.o.) concentrations of < 2.0 ml l−1. Shifts in the distribution patterns of zooplankters in association with these events have been documented, but the mechanisms responsible for these shifts have not been investigated. This study assessed interspecific differences in responses to hypoxia by several species of calanoid copepods common off Turkey Point, Florida, USA: Labidocera aestiva (Wheeler) (a summer/fall species), Acartia tonsa (Dana) (a ubiquitous year-round species), and Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) (a winter/spring species). Under conditions of moderate to severe hypoxia 24-h survival experiments were conducted for adults and nauplii of these species from August 1994 to October 1995. Experiments on adults used a flow-through system to maintain constant d.o. concentrations. Adults of A. tonsa showed no decline in survival with d.o. as low as 1.0 ml l−1, sharp declines in survival at d.o. = 0.9 to 0.6 ml l−1, and 100% mortality with d.o. = 0.5 ml l−1. Adults of L. aestiva and C. hamatus were more sensitive to oxygen depletion: both species experienced significant decreases in survival for d.o. = 1.0 ml l−1. Nauplii of L. aestiva and A. tonsa showed no significant mortality with d.o. = 1.1 to 1.5 ml␣l−1 and d.o. = 0.24 to 0.5 ml l−1, respectively. In addition, experiments investigating behavioral avoidance of moderate to severe hypoxia were carried out for adults of all three species. None of the three species effectively avoided either severely hypoxic (d.o. < 0.5 ml l−1) or moderately hypoxic (d.o. ≈ 1.0 ml l−1) bottom layers in stratified columns. These results suggest that in␣nearshore areas where development of zones of d.o. < 1.0 ml l−1 may be sudden, widespread, or unpredictable, patterns of reduced copepod abundance in bottom waters may be due primarily to mortality rather than avoidance. The relationship between somatic growth and incremental growth of otoliths of Pacific saury, Cololabis saira (Brevoort), larvae under different temperature conditions was studied in the laboratory for three age groups (0 to 9, 10 to 20 and 20 to 30 d posthatch). Larvae were incubated from hatching to 9 d at 24, 20, and 16 °C. Further, larvae initially reared at an ambient temperature of 21.7 °C were transferred to experimental temperatures of 22, 18, and 14 °C on Day 10 and reared to Day 20 and similarly from Day 20 and reared to Day 30 posthatch. Growth trajectories of larvae sampled at the end of the three experiments were back-calculated using the biological intercept method and compared to the measured values 0 and 5 d after the start of each experiment. Back-calculated knob length at the different temperatures indicated no significant difference to the measured knob lengths except for the cases at 20 °C from hatching to 9-d-old larvae and at 14 °C from 20- to 30-d-old larvae. The close correlation between somatic and otolith growth shown in this study indicated the feasibility of estimating the growth history of Pacific saury larvae using otolith readings.
