The fate of the acidic organic solute from the soil-water-solvent system is not well-understood. In this study, the effect of the acidic functional group of organic solute in the sorption from cosolvent system was evaluated. The sorption of naphthalene (NAP) and 1-naphthoic acid (1-NAPA) by three kaolinitic soils and two model sorbents (kaolinite and humic acid) were measured as functions of the methanol volume fractions (f c ≤ 0.4) and ionic compositions (CaCl2 and KCl). The solubility of 1-NAPA was also measured in various ionic compositions. The sorption data were interpreted using the cosolvency-induced sorption model. The K m values (= the linear sorption coefficient) of NAP with kaolinitic soil for both ionic compositions was log linearly decreased with f c. However, the K m values of 1-NAPA with both ionic compositions remained relatively constant over the f c range. For the model sorbent, the K m values of 1-NAPA with kaolinite for the KCl system and with humic acid for both ionic compositions decreased with f c, while the sorption of 1-NAPA with kaolinite for the CaCl2 system was increased with f c. From the solubility data of 1-NAPA with f c, no significant difference was observed with the different ionic compositions, indicating an insignificant change in the aqueous activity of the liquid phase. In conclusion, the enhanced 1-NAPA sorption, greater than that predicted from the cosolvency-induced model, was due to an untraceable interaction between the carboxylate and hydrophilic soil domain in the methanol-water system. Therefore, in order to accurately predict the environmental fate of acidic pesticides and organic solutes, an effort to quantitatively incorporate the enhanced hydrophilic sorption into the current cosolvency-induced sorption model is required.  相似文献

An artificial humic substance-kaolinite-associate (HSKA) was synthesized as a model substance for natural clays containing organic matter in clay formations, soils, and sediments. The U(VI) sorption onto this model substance was studied in batch experiments as a function of pH and compared to the U(VI) sorption onto kaolinite in absence and presence of separately added humic acid (HA). The HSKA has a TOC content of 4.9 mg g(-1). It was found that the humic matter associated with kaolinite exhibits an immobilizing as well as an mobilizing effect on U(VI). Between pH 3 and 5, humic matter causes an increase of the U(VI) sorption onto kaolinite, whereas at pH above 5 the release of humic matter from the associate into the solution and the formation of dissolved uranyl humate complexes reduces the U(VI) sorption. The U(VI) sorption onto the synthetic HSKA differs from that of U(VI) in the system U(VI)/HA/kaolinite with comparable amounts of separately added HA. Separately added HA causes a stronger mobilizing effect on U(VI) than humic matter present in HSKA. This can be attributed to structural and functional dissimilarities of the humic substances.  相似文献

This study investigates the influence of the two different clay minerals kaolinite and smectite as well as of organic matter on the cation sorption and desorption behaviour of three imidazolium based ionic liquids -1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (IM14 BF(4)), 1-methyl-3-octyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (IM18 BF(4)) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (IM14 (CF(3)SO(2))(2)N) - in soil. The German standard soil Lufa 2.2 - a natural soil classified as a loamy sand - was the basis substrate for the different soil compositions and also served as a reference soil. The addition of organic matter and clays increases the sorption of the substances and in particular smectite had striking effects on the sorption capacity for all three ionic liquids indicating that ionic interactions play an important role for sorption and desorption processes of ionic liquids in soil. One exception was for kaolinite-containing soils and the IM14 cation: with (CF(3)SO(2))(2)N(-) as an anion the sorption was identical at either 10 wt% or 15 wt% clay content, and with BF(4)(-) sorption was even lower at 15 wt% kaolinite than at 10 wt%. Desorption was weak for IM18 BF(4), presumably owing to the longer alkyl side chain. With regard to the influence of kaolinite on desorption, the same pattern was observed as it was found for the sorption of IM14 BF(4) and IM14 (CF(3)SO(2))(2)N.  相似文献

The contributions of organic matter and the mineral surface to the overall sorption of six nonpolar neutral organic compounds (1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, m-xylene, toluene, benzene) by five humic acid (HA)-coated sands with different fractions of organic carbon (f(oc)) ranging from 0.024% to 0.154% were evaluated on the basis of measured data and four different sorption models. Sorption of all six sorbates to both uncoated and heated sands was nearly linear due to the coverage of hydrophilic mineral surface with the ordered vicinal water region. Sorption of all six sorbates to the HA-coated sands was also essentially linear, and resulted from a combination of sorption to both organic matter and the mineral surface, with the dominance of either contribution depending on the properties of the sorbents (e.g., f(oc)) and the sorbates (e.g., K(ow)). A proposed two-component model for sorption including blocking effect was appropriate for quantifying the contributions of organic matter and the mineral surface to the overall sorption. However, conventional sorption models considering the contributions of both organic matter and the mineral surface provided essentially as good agreement between predicted and measured distribution coefficients as the more complicated, two-component model for sorption that takes into account mineral surface blocking by HA.  相似文献

The estimation of solute sorptive behaviors is essential when direct sorption data are unavailable and will provide a convenient way to assess the fate and the biological activity of organic solutes in soil/sediment environments. In this study, the sorption of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) on 19 soil/sediment samples and the sorption of 13 organic solutes on one sediment were investigated. All sorption isotherms are nonlinear and can be described satisfactorily by a simple dual-mode model (DMM): q(e)=KpCe+Q0 . bCe/(1+bCe), where Kp (mlg(-1)) is the partition coefficient; Ce (microgml(-1)) is the equilibrium concentration; Q0 (microgg(-1)) is the maximum adsorption capacity; Q0 . b (mlg(-1)) is the Langmuir-type isotherm slope in the low concentration (Henry's law) range and b (mlmicrog(-1)) is a constant related to the affinity of the surface for the solute. Based on these nonlinear sorption isotherms and similar other nonlinear isotherms, it is observed that, for both polar 2,4-DCP and nonpolar phenanthrene, Kp, Q0 and Q0 . b are linearly correlated with soil/sediment organic carbon content (f(oc) in the range of 0.118-53.7%). The results indicate that the nonlinear sorption of organic solutes results primarily from interactions with soil/sediment organic matter. The K*oc K*oc=Kp/f(oc)), Qoc (Qoc=Q0/f(oc)), Loc (Loc=Q0 . b/f(oc)) and b for a given organic solute with different soils/sediments are largely invariant. Furthermore, logK*oc, logb and logLoc for various organic solutes are correlated significantly with the solute logKow or logSw (logKow in the range of 0.9 to 5.13 and logSw in the range of -6.176 to -0.070). A fundamental empirical equation was then established to calculate approximately the nonlinear sorption from soil/sediment f(oc) and solute Sw for a given solute equilibrium concentration.  相似文献

The sorption of Cu(II) from an aqueous solution using ZSM-5 zeolite was investigated by batch technique under ambient conditions. Sorption was investigated as a function of pH, ionic strength, foreign ions, humic substances, and temperature. The results indicate that the sorption of Cu(II) on ZSM-5 zeolite is strongly dependent on pH. Sorption is dependent on ionic strength at low pH, but independent of ionic strength at high pH values. The presence of humic/fluvic acid (HA/FA) enhances the sorption of Cu(II) on ZSM-5 zeolite at low pH values, and reduces Cu(II) sorption at high pH values. Sorption isotherms were well simulated by the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters (i.e., deltaH0, deltaS0 and deltaG0) for the sorption of Cu(II) were determined from temperature-dependent sorption isotherms at 293.15, 313.15, and 333.15 K, respectively. Results indicate that the sorption process of Cu(II) on ZSM-5 zeolite is spontaneous and endothermic.  相似文献

The main objective of the present study was to assess the roles of various soil components in sorption of organic compounds differing in polarity. Removal of the whole soil organic matter decreased sorption by approximately 86% for nonpolar 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (TCB), but only 34-54% for highly polar 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB); however, removal of the extractable humic/fulvic acids did not much affect sorption of the two sorbates. With normalization of solute hydrophobicity, TNB exhibits several orders of magnitude stronger sorption compared with TCB to maize burn residue (black carbon), extracted humic acid and Na+-saturated montmorillonite clay, suggesting specific sorptive interactions for TNB with the individual model soil components. It was proposed that sorption of TCB to the bulk soil was dominated by hydrophobic partition to the condensed, non-extractable fraction of organic matters (humin/kerogen and black carbon), while interactions with soil clay minerals were an important additional factor for sorption of TNB.  相似文献

Experiments in batch equilibrium system were carried out to evaluate the importance of physical and chemical factors determining the sorption efficiency of humic substances (HS) on aquifer material, which has been used for artificial recharge of groundwater (ARG) in drinking water production. Results showed that an increase of the amount of clay in the aquifer material and a decrease of pH in water increased the sorption efficiency. The sorption of higher molecular weight, more hydrophobic and aromatic HS (Aldrich and forest soil humic acids) were greater than the sorption of acidic HS (river fulvic acids), either on the aquifer material or to its representative sorbing phases, clay and organic matter. The sorption on the aquifer material was largely due to physical sorption (hydrophobic attractions). This study showed the importance of HS composition on their removal during ARG and contributed to an understanding of the HS sorption mechanisms in this process.  相似文献

Rhamnolipids produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been proposed as soil washing agents for enhanced removal of metal and organic contaminants from soil. A potential limitation for the application of rhamnolipids is sorption by soil matrix components. The objective of this study is to empirically determine the contribution of representative soil constituents (clays, metal oxides, and organic matter) to sorption of the rhamnolipid form most efficient at metal complexation (monorhamnolipid). Sorption studies show that monorhamnolipid (R1) sorption is concentration dependent. At low R1 concentrations that are relevant for enhancing organic contaminant biodegradation, R1 sorption followed the order: hematite (Fe(2)O(3))>kaolinite>MnO(2) approximately illite approximately Ca-montmorillonite>gibbsite (Al(OH)(3))>humic acid-coated silica. At high R1 concentrations, relevant for use in complexation/removal of metals or organics, R1 sorption followed the order: illite>humic acid-coated silica>Ca-montmorillonite>hematite>MnO(2)>gibbsite approximately kaolinite. These results allowed prediction of R1 sorption by a series of six soils. Finally, a comparison of R1 and R2 (dirhamnolipid) shows that the R1 form sorbs more strongly alone than when in a mixture of both the R1 and R2 forms. The information presented can be used to estimate, on an individual soil basis, the extent of rhamnolipid sorption. This is important for determining: (1) whether rhamnolipid addition is a feasible remediation option and (2) the amount of rhamnolipid required to efficiently remove the contaminant.  相似文献

We obtained the sorption isotherms of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in clay, clay saline and organic soils. The distribution coefficients (K(d)) were determined in 0.02 eq l(-1) CaCl(2) and in a solution that simulated the soil solution cationic composition. The K(d) values greatly varied with the composition of the sorption solution and the initial metal concentration. The sorption experiments were complemented with the quantification of the extractable metal, to estimate the reversibility of metal sorption. The extraction yields depended on the metal-soil combination, and the initial metal concentration, showing no correlation with previous K(d) values. The effect of the solution composition in mobility predictions was estimated through a Retention Factor, defined as the ratio of the K(d) versus the extraction yield. Results showed that risk was over- or underestimated using the CaCl(2) medium in soils with a markedly different soil solution composition.  相似文献

Sorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by pure minerals and humic acids were measured to obtain additional perspective on the potential contributions of both clay minerals and soil organic matter (SOM) to contaminants retention in soils. Four types of common soil minerals and two kinds of humic acids (HAs) were tested. The sorption affinity for PCP conformed to an order of HAs > K-montmorillonite > Ca-montmorillonite > goethite > kaolinite. Such a difference in sorption capacity could be attributed to the crucial control of HAs. Clay minerals also had their contribution, especially K-montmorillonite, which played an important, if not dominant, role in the controlling process of PCP sorption. By removing 80% (on average) of the organic carbon from the soils with H(2)O(2), the sorption decreased by an average of 50%. The sorption reversibility had been greatly favored as well. Considering the uncharged mineral fractions in soil before and after H(2)O(2)-treated, the main variation in sorption behavior of the soil might thus be related to the removed organic carbon and the reduced pH. This testified rightly the interactive effect of SOM and clay minerals on PCP sorption as a function of pH.  相似文献

The sorption coefficient, K(OC), of phenanthrene (PHE) has been reported to vary with different types of organic matter, leading to uncertainties in predicting the environmental behavior of PHE. Among the studies that relate organic matter properties to their sorption characteristics, physical conformation of organic matter is often neglected. In this work, organic matter samples of different physical forms were examined for their sorption characteristics. Dissolved humic acids (DHA) showed significantly higher K(OC) than the corresponding solid humic acids (SHA) from which the DHAs were made. The K(OC) of DHAs was found to be related to polarity, whereas K(OC) of SHAs increased with aliphatic carbon content. Soil particles were treated with H(2)O(2) to remove organic matter, and humic acid was coated on H(2)O(2)-treated soil particles to make organo-mineral complexes at pH 4, 7 and 10. Although the nonlinear sorption was apparent for SHAs and H(2)O(2)-treated soil particles, the organo-mineral complexes formed using these two components at pH 4, 7 and 10 exhibited relatively linear sorption at organic carbon content, f(OC)>0.5%. These results indicate that organic matter of the same composition may have different sorption properties due to different physical forms (or conformations). Nonlinear sorption for the complexes formed at pH 4 with lower f(OC) (<0.5%) was also discussed.  相似文献

This study qualifies and quantifies the immobilization of Cd, Zn and Co, (used as models of bivalent metal ions due to their relevant toxicity) in filters of synthetic hydroxyapatite (HAP) [Ca5(PO4)3OH]. They were flushed with solutions containing Cd (1 x 10(-5)M), Zn and Co (1 x 10(-4)M) at constant pH (8.6) and ionic strength (0.01 M). The concentration of these metal ions in the outlet was measured by ICP-OEM spectroscopy. The software PHREEQC (version 2.4.2) was used to model sorption process and the potential effect of salinity (KCl), pH, alkalinity (NaHCO3) and hardness (CaCl2) over the efficiency of the treatment. Results showed an excellent retention capacity of HAP for Cd, Zn and Co. Sorption data were successfully described considering a mix model of surface complexation onto phosphate surface groups, ionic exchange in surface calcium sites and the precipitation of ZnO. Co exchange and surface complexation constants (Kex and Kc) were taken from previous experiments, while KexCd=0.32 and KcCd=0.63 were estimated from our modeling results. Predictive values of metal ion sorption show that: (a) an increase in hardness does not play a significant role in the retention capacity of these metals on HAP; (b) an increase in alkalinity promotes the precipitation of MeCO3 which could alter the hydrodynamic of the column; (c) a decrease in pH and an increase in salinity inhibit ZnO precipitation enhancing Zn and Cd adsorption and decreasing Co retention on HAP.  相似文献

The sorption and desorption behavior of radium on bentonite and purified smectite was investigated as a function of pH, ionic strength and liquid to solid ratio by batch experiments. The distribution coefficients (Kd) were in the range of 10(2) to > 10(4) ml g-1 and depended on ionic strength and pH. Most of sorbed Ra was desorbed by 1 M KCl. The results for purified smectite indicated that Ra sorption is dominated by ion exchange at layer sites of smectite, and surface complexation at edge sites may increase Ra sorption at higher pH region. Reaction parameters between Ra and smectite were determined based on an interaction model between smectite and groundwater. The reaction parameters were then used to explain the results of bentonite by considering dissolution and precipitation of minerals and soluble impurities. The dependencies of experimental Kd values on pH, ionic strength and liquid to solid ratio were qualitatively explained by the model. The modeling result for bentonite indicated that sorption of Ra on bentonite is dominated by ion exchange with smectite. The observed pH dependency was caused by changes of Ca concentration arising from dissolution and precipitation of calcite. Diffusion behavior of Ra in bentonite was also investigated as a function of dry density and ionic strength. The apparent diffusion coefficients (Da) obtained in compacted bentonite were in the range of 1.1 x 10(-11) to 2.2 x 10(-12) m2 s-1 and decreased with increasing in dry density and ionic strength. The Kd values obtained by measured effective diffusion coefficient (De) and modeled De were consistent with those by the sorption model in a deviation within one order of magnitude.  相似文献

Sorption of naphthalene and phenanthrene by soil humic acids   总被引:26,自引:0,他引:26
Humic acids are a major fraction of soil organic matter (SOM), and sorption of hydrophobic organic chemicals by humic acids influences their behavior and fate in soil. A clear understanding of the sorption of organic chemicals by humic acids will help to determine their sorptive mechanisms in SOM and soil. In this paper, we determined the sorption of two hydrophobic organic compounds, naphthalene and phenanthrene by six pedogenetically related humic acids. These humic acids were extracted from different depths of a single soil profile and characterized by solid-state CP/MAS 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Aromaticity of the humic acids increased with soil depth. Similarly, atomic ratios of C/H and C/O also increased with depth (from organic to mineral horizons). All isotherms were nonlinear. Freundlich exponents (N) ranged from 0.87 to 0.95 for naphthalene and from 0.86 to 0.92 for phenanthrene. The N values of phenanthrene were consistently lower than naphthalene for a given humic acid. For both compounds, N values decreased with increasing aromaticity of the humic acids, such an inverse relationship was never reported before. These results support the dual-mode sorption model where partitioning occurs in both expanded (flexible) and condensed (rigid) domains while nonlinear sorption only in condensed domains of SOM. Sorption in the condensed domains may be a cause for slow desorption, and reduced availability and toxicity with aging.  相似文献

The adsorption of heavy fuel oil No. 2 (F2) on a reference kaolinite (Arvor kaolin, France), and the influence of this anthropic organic matter on the phenanthrene (PHEN) retention capacity of a kaolinite were investigated in the laboratory. The heaviest and most polar compounds of F2 are adsorbed on kaolinite preferentially to the other compounds and also partly irreversibly. The precoating of kaolinite by F2 significantly increases the sorption of PHEN in the range of concentrations studied (10-500 microg l(-1)). The partition coefficients normalized to organic carbon content (Koc) of kaolin precoated with fuel oil (5.2 < log Koc < 5.5) are one order of magnitude higher than those of the original kaolin (4.2 < logKoc < 4.5), and show very good agreement with the literature for polluted industrial soils. The Koc measured on the uncoated kaolin are in close agreement with the values determined for natural soils in which humic substances represent the organic component. This demonstrates that the composition of organic matter is the primary factor in PHEN retention by the soils. Therefore, in predicting the transport of PHEN, and other Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in general, in soils of industrial sites containing heavy hydrocarbons or tars requires that the specific nature of the organic matter contained in these soils be taken into consideration.  相似文献

Study of sorption kinetics of some ionic liquids on different soil types   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the present contribution sorption kinetics experiments under static conditions were utilized in three selected ionic liquids cations (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides) study with five type of soil, differing in total organic carbon (TOC) content. The experimental results indicate the sorption capacity growth with increase in TOC content and hydrophobicity of ionic liquid cation. The obtained kinetic sorption parameters as well as distribution coefficients (Kd) were used to estimate the sorption properties of the soil types towards the ionic liquids in question. The Gibbs free energy values indicate that ionic liquid cations sorption on soils could be generally considered as a physical adsorption with exothermic effect. But the values of −dG for studied cations sorption on soil with very high of TOC content in soil (45%) may testify to nature of chemical adsorption. Sorption of the analyzed compounds occurs probably by means of hydrogen bonds, electrostatic and π  π interaction with the organic matter and the clay minerals of the soils.  相似文献

The well-known cosolvency-induced sorption model is not applicable to predict the sorption of carboxylic acids in cosolvent system. To investigate the phenomenon, sorption and solubility of chlorinated phenols (2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP)) and carboxylic acids (benzoic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)) were measured in soil-methanol mixture with various ionic strengths. The sorption (Km) of chlorinated phenols was explained by a cosolvency-induced sorption model; the inverse log-linear relationship between the Km and methanol volume fraction (fc). However, the Km of carboxylic acids increased with increasing fc. This discrepancy was attributed to the effect of the carboxylic moiety. To explain the effect, solubility was measured for benzoic acid and 2,4,6-TCP from various liquid conditions. For both solutes, the cosolvency power (σ) increased with CaCl2 concentrations and the salting constant (Ks) became smaller as fc increased. However, the σ value at a given salt concentration and the Ks value at a given fc were greater for 2,4,6-TCP than for benzoic acid, both of which were due to the greater hydrophobicity of the former. Overall, the solubility profiles of the both solutes on combination of fc and CaCl2 concentration evidenced no specific role of the carboxylic moiety. Therefore, it can be reasonably concluded that the positive relationship between Km and fc for carboxylic organic acid can be attributed to the modification of the activity coefficient occurred in the solid phase, which cannot be traceable by cosolvency-based model.  相似文献

Pesticides and other organic species are adsorbed by soil via different mechanisms, with bond strengths that depend on the properties of both the soil and the pesticide. Since the clay fraction in soil is a preferential sorbent for organic matter, reference kaolinite and montmorillonite are useful models for studying the mechanism and the strength of sorption. This paper presents the results of batch experiments to investigate the interactions of kaolinite KGa-1 and montmorillonite SWy-1 with the following pesticides and organic species resulting from the natural degradation of pesticides in the environment: atrazine (1-chloro-3-ethylamino-5-isopropylamino-2,4,6-triazine), simazine (1-chloro-3,5-bisethylamino-2,4,6-triazine), diuron [1,1-dimethyl-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea], aniline, 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. Each of these chemicals has different hydrophilicity. Systems containing 2.0 g of clay were put in contact with 100.0 mL of solutions of the pesticides at known concentration ranging from 1.0 to 5.0 mg/L, and the amount of solute adsorbed was evaluated through RP-HPLC analysis of the pesticide still present in the aqueous suspension. To test for electrostatic interactions between the clay surface and the pesticides, potentiometric titration was used to determine the permanent surface charge of clays. Experiments were performed at different pH values. The results indicate that, for the chemicals studied, neutral molecules are preferentially retained relative to ionized ones, and that montmorillonite is a more effective sorbent than kaolinite.  相似文献

This study presents an overall sorption model to estimate the sorption equilibrium coefficients of hydrophobic organic pollutants for heterogeneous aquatic systems. This proposed model combines a series of sorption equilibrium relationships including the adsorption of dissolved organic matters on particulates, the binding between organic pollutants and dissolved organic matters, and the sorption of organic pollutants on particulates with or without the presence of dissolved organic matters. By using this model, variations among the sorption equilibrium coefficients with the concentrations of dissolved organic matters are obtained. Also discussed herein are case studies involving pollutants having a wide spectrum of K(ow)s, different types of dissolved organic matters, different pH values and ionic strengths. In most of the case studies, the sorption equilibrium coefficients initially increase with the-concentrations of dissolved organic matters and, then, decrease after reaching a maximum value. This study also addresses the relative errors of partition coefficients attributed to the negligence of the effect caused by the dissolved organic matter, the so-called third-phase effect.  相似文献
