Adult females of the copepod Chiridius armatus inhabited the lower half of a 200-m water column during winter and spring. Their distribution became gradually shallower during summer and autumn. Female C. armatus carried out diel vertical migrations, with shallower population distribution at night compared to day, although normally with few individuals captured in the upper 50 m. Enumeration of fecal pellets produced by freshly collected individuals showed that C. armatus was foraging throughout the year. Production of fecal pellets was at a minimum in February and at a maximum in April. Individuals from all depths produced fecal pellets, but the numbers seemed to decrease by depth. Numbers of fecal pellets were greatest for individuals captured at night. The omnivorous C. armatus consistently produced many more fecal pellets than the concurrently studied, strictly carnivorous copepod Paraeuchaeta norvegica. We ascribe the relatively high number of fecal pellets to the higher content of indigestible components in plant material than in animal food. The assumption of phytoplankton as a prevailing food source got qualitative support from scanning electron microscope pictures, showing that fecal pellets mainly contained phytoplankton.Communicated by L. The role of the Mediterranean euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica in the cycling of radiocerium (141Ce) was examined. When uptake of 141Ce occurs directly from the water, a dynamic population equilibrium is reached at a concentration factor of about 250. Molting was responsible for up to 99% loss of total body burden at first molt, and about 45% of the remaining activity at second molt, thus denying true longterm equilibrium to individual animals. Fecal pellets did not contain measureable 141Ce activity when the euphausiids accumulated the isotope from water, thus proving that surface adsorption was the key accumulating process from water. When radiocerium was taken in through ingestion of labelled Artemia, about 99% of the body burden was voided as fecal pellets. Excretion by this route was accelerated when euphausiids were fed non-radioactive Artemia during loss phase. Radioactive counts of the pellets confirmed that all ingested 141Ce was lost through defecation. When 141Ce was ingested as labelled phytoplankton, a substantial fraction of the total body burden occurred in the molts, which indicated that the phytoplankton lost 141Ce to the water and the radioactivity was subsequently adsorbed to outer surfaces of the euphausiids. Molts, fecal pellets, and freshly-killed euphausiids lost 141Ce to the water exponentially, the rates being similar to the exponential portions of the loss curves for live, non-molting individuals. It is suggested that M. norvegica, and probably other pelagic zooplankters, can greatly accelerate radiocerium transport to the ocean floor by packaging the isotope as fecal pellets. In coastal areas subject to low-level radioactive waste disposal, 141Ce might be ionic (or at least soluble) to a great extent, in which case euphausiids could take up the isotope rapidly and accelerate its vertical transport via molting.  相似文献

Effects of food availability and season on the free amino acid (FAA) and total protein content of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus females were investigated in two mesocosm experiments on the Norwegian west coast in spring and autumn. Starved C. finmarchicus females showed no change in total FAA content, but the FAA pool composition changed drastically. During the first 10 days of starvation the protein content showed a moderate decline (<2 µg ind -1); however, during the following 21 days the total content was drastically reduced, from 63 to 9 µg ind -1. This supports the notion of a sequential catabolism of endogenous nutrients during starvation. In females at high food concentrations, the body protein content increased during spring, but decreased during autumn. The FAA pool composition of females differed between spring and autumn in 14 of the 18 FAA investigated. Reduced body protein content and increased proportion of essential free amino acid were observed during starvation. Similar changes were observed in females sampled at the end of the mesocosm experiments in the autumn. The results suggest that mature C. finmarchicus females are in a negative protein balance during autumn, despite high food concentrations, contributing to a lower fitness than in females maturing during the spring.  相似文献

Freshly collected faecal pellets of the common intertidal isopodIdotea granulosa Rathke, 1843, were exposed to natural communities of bacteria + protozoa, and bacteria + protozoa + metazoa for 16 d in running North Sea nearshore water during September 1989. All treatments showed quite identical changes in chlorophylla, phaeopigments, carbon (C) to nitrogen (N) ratio, heterotrophic bacteria and protozoa. Plant pigment, C and N content of faeces decreased by about half in 94 h. Interestingly, although the C/N ratio changed considerably during the study, the values at the end of 16 d were similar to ones at the beginning, suggesting that the C/N value per se of particles in the sea may not reflect their age or nutritive value to consumers. Further, dry weight of pellets which remained unchanged in appearance, decreased by half in 4 d and by two thirds in 16 d, indicating loss of substance but not bulk. The development and abundance of free bacteria in the water closely matched that in pellets, supporting the idea that faeces export bacteria or stimulate bacterial growth in the water through release of dissolved nutrients. There were 103 times more bacteria on faeces than free in the water of the same volume. However, given the relative volumes of the pellet (ca 0.1 mm3) and the free water in the microcosms (ca 107 × pellet volume), the degradation of faecal matter may support the production of the bulk of free-living bacteria in water. When organisms of larger sizes were allowed access to the pellets, several metazoans (e.g. nematodes ca 4 per pellet) were observed, but did not significantly accelerate faeces degradation. Social parasitism has evolved at least ten times in the allodapine bees but studies that explore the parasite’s integration and exploitation of host colonies are lacking. Using colony content and dissection data, we examine how Inquilina schwarzi affects the social organisation of its host Exoneura robusta. Our samples include three critical periods in the host life cycle: initial formation of dominance hierarchies in late autumn, commencement of oviposition by host queens in late winter, and development of secondary reproductives in late spring. I. schwarzi preferentially parasitises larger host colonies in autumn, but during autumn and winter, the parasite appears to be socially invisible, living in the nest without disrupting the normal functioning of these colonies. Inquilines begin egg laying much later than their hosts, and by late spring, they have disrupted host reproductive hierarchies, leading to lower skew in ovarian sizes of their host nestmates. Living invisibly within the host nest for the first 6 months and waiting until well after host reproduction has begun before disrupting their social organisation appear to be unique among social insects. Such a change in strategy may be facilitated by the different social systems found in allodapine bees, with the social parasites possibly disrupting the reproductive hierarchies during spring to prevent or reduce the normal dispersal of some host females from their natal nests.  相似文献

Herring (Clupea harengus L.) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii) fed frozen-thawed zooplankton for 7 days assimilated more than 90% of the dry matter in the zooplankton consumed. Less than 5% of the total lipid ingested, largely wax esters, was excreted in the faeces. Faecal lipids from both the herring and the trout, especially the latter, were rich in wax esters and free fatty alcohols. Faecal fatty alcohols were enriched in 22:1 and deficient in 16:0 and 16:1 alcohols compared to zooplankton fatty alcohols. The growth of rainbow trout fed frozen-thawed zooplankton over 3 months was about one-half of that of trout fed commercial pellets. The fish fed on zooplankton appeared normal and were more pigmented than the fish fed on commercial pellets.  相似文献

Flux of the heavy metal cadmium through the euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica was examined. Radiotracer experiments showed that cadmium can be accumulated either directly from water or through the food chain. When comparing equilibrium cadmium concentration factors based on stable element measurements with those obtained from radiotracer experiments, it is evident that exchange between cadmium in the water and that in euphausiid tissue is a relatively slow process, indicating that, in the long term, ingestion of cadmium will probably be the more important route for the accumulation of this metal. Approximately 10% of cadmium ingested by euphausiids was incorporated into internal tissues when the food source was radioactive Artemia. After 1 month cadmium, accumulated directly from water, was found to be most concentrated in the viscera with lesser amounts in eyes, exoskeleton and muscle, respectively. Use of a simple model, based on the assumption that cadmium taken in by the organism must equal cadmium released plus that accumulated in tissue, allowed assessment of the relative importance of various metabolic parameters in controlling the cadmium flux through euphausiids. Fecal pellets, due to their relatively high rate of production and high cadmium content, accounted for 84% of the total cadmium flux through M. norvegica. Comparisons of stable cadmium concentrations in natural euphausiid food and the organism's resultant fecal pellets indicate that the cadmium concentration in ingested material was increased nearly 5-fold during its passage through the euphausiid. From comparisons of all routes by which cadmium can be released from M. norvegica to the water column, it is concluded that fecal pellet deposition represents the principal mechanism effecting the downward vertical transport of cadmium by this species.  相似文献

The pelagic crustacean Euphausia pacifica Hansen was sampled with a multiple-sample 1.0 m2 Tucker trawl and a multiple-sample 1.0 m2 vertical net in Dabob Bay, Washington on 17 dates between May 1985 and October 1987. Size (stage) structure and abundance of the population were determined for each date, while vertical distribution and diel migration were determined for 13 dates. Although internannual variability in both timing and magnitude of events occurred, consistent patterns were discernable. The population produced a large pulse of larvae (2 to 5 mm) in late spring of each year, apparently in response to the vernal phytoplankton bloom. Much lower abundances of larvae occurred during summer and autumn of each year, and larvae were completely absent during winter. Recruitment to the juvenile (6 to 9 mm) and adult (10 mm) stages was strongest during the summer, with abundances of these individuals peaking in summer and autumn. Individual growth rates, determined by modal progression analysis, were calculated for E. pacifica. Rates ranged from zero for some adult cohorts during the winter to 0.12 mm d-1 for larvae during spring. The latter are among the highest ever reported for this species in the field. The vertical distributions and diel vertical migrations (DVM) of E. pacifica varied seasonally and between size (stage) classes. At night, all size classes were distributed in the surface layer (upper 25 m) irrespective of season or year. During the day, the larger/older stages were always distributed at middepths (50 to 125 m). In contrast, the daytime distribution of the larvae was more variable, being concentrated at the surface during spring and early summer of 1985, and at increasing depths later in the summer and autumn of 1985 and again in spring of 1986. This resulted in invariant DVM in the juveniles and adults, but variable DVM in the larvae, the latter of which is hypothesized to be a response to variable abundances of zooplanktivorous fish.  相似文献

Defensive aggregation by Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis has been invoked as the fulcrum for the transformation of macroalgal beds into coralline barrens in the northwest Atlantic. We critically examined some of the mechanisms contributing to aggregation behavior by experimentally manipulating sea urchins, purported predators and food during autumn 1983 and spring 1984 both in the laboratory and field. We utilized several approaches to examine a range of sea urchin responses to the presence of food, tethered predators, caged predators, crushed con-specifics in the field and predators in laboratory tanks. Some of the field cages had the property of allowing free passage to sea urchins while retaining lobsters; this allowed distinctions to be made between artifacts caused by cage walls or topographic barriers and unrestricted behavioral responses of sea urchins. The results falsified the hypothesis that aggregations of S. droebachiensis are elicited by predators. Except in the presence of algae, sea urchins always avoided decapod predators (but not sea stars) and fled from the vicinity of injured conspecifics. However, avoidance behavior was subordinate to feeding responses, demonstrated by mass migrations of sea urchins into cages (with lobsters) to feed on algae. We reaffirmed by observation and manipulation previous studies which showed that sea urchins aggregate only in the presence of food. Two types of sea urchin groupings were delineated: (1) surficial two dimensional associations, often caused by topographic or other features which inhibited dispersal and (2) cohesive three-dimensional aggregations induced by food.  相似文献

 Free amino acid (FAA) and protein content were measured in various developmental stages of Artemia franciscana, from cysts to Instar III metanauplii. In addition, decapsulated cysts of 15 Artemia populations from different localities were compared with respect to their FAA and protein content. Furthermore, the content and composition of the FAA pool were modulated by hatching the cysts at various salinities, and by enriching the nauplii with algae or a lipid-enrichment emulsion. The FAA content increased threefold from cysts to nauplii, and Instar III metanauplii contained nearly 50% taurine of total FAA. Cysts of A. franciscana were found to contain one-third the amount of FAA compared to the other Artemia species investigated. The content and pool composition of FAA was successfully modulated in 11 of 13 populations, where by the content of FAA was significantly increased when hatched at high salinity. Finally, enrichment elevated the content of FAA and changed the pool composition, thereby showing a dietary effect. Algal enrichment also increased the protein content. Survival, developmental and consumption rate (Artemia nauplii ingested per day) as well as predation efficiency (ingested per available Artemia nauplii) were studied during the larval development of the shallow-water burrowing thalassinid Callianassa tyrrhena (Petagna, 1792), which exhibits an abbreviated type of development with only two zoeal stages and a megalopa. The larvae, hatched from berried females from S. Euboikos Bay (Aegean Sea, Greece), were reared at 10 temperature–food density combinations (19 and 24 °C; 0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Artemia nauplii d−1). Enhanced starvation resistance was evident: 92 and 58% of starved zoeas I molted to zoea II, while metamorphosis to megalopa was achieved by 76 and 42% of the hatched zoeas at 19 and 24 °C, respectively. The duration of both zoeal stages was affected by temperature, food density and their interaction. Nevertheless, starvation showed different effects at the two temperatures: compared to the fed shrimp, the starved zoeae exhibited accelerated development at 19 °C (8.4 d) but delayed metamorphosis at 24 °C (5.9 d). On the other hand, both zoeal stages were able to consume food at an increased rate as food density and temperature increased. Predation efficiency also increased with temperature, but never exceeded 0.6. Facultative lecithotrophy, more pronounced during the first zoeal stage of C.tyrrhena, can be regarded as an adaptation of a species whose larvae can respond physiologically to the different temperature–food density combinations encountered in the wide geographical range of their natural habitat. Using tracking radars, we investigated the variability of flight directions of long-distance nocturnal passerine migrants across seasons (spring versus autumn migration) and sites at the southern (56° N) and northern (68° N) ends of the Scandinavian Peninsula (Lund versus Abisko). Whilst most migrants at Lund are on passage to and from breeding sites in Fennoscandia, the majority of the migrants at Abisko are close to their breeding sites, and migration at Abisko thus to a large degree reflects initial departure from breeding sites (autumn) or final approach to breeding destinations (spring). The radar data were used to test predictions about differences in orientation and wind drift effects between adult and juvenile birds (a large proportion of autumn migrants consists of juvenile birds on their first journey), between situations far away from or near the goals and between different phases of migration (initial departure, en route passage, final approach to goal). The concentrations (both total and within-night concentrations) of flight directions differed significantly between seasons as well as sites, with the highest concentration at Lund in spring (mean vector length of track directions, r = 0.79) and lowest at Abisko during spring (r = 0.35). Partial wind drift and partial compensation were recorded at Lund, with a similar effect size in spring and autumn, whilst possible wind drift effects at Abisko were obscured by the large directional scatter at this site. The results from Lund support the prediction that the high proportion of juveniles in autumn contributes to increase the directional scatter during this season, whilst there was no support for predictions of differential wind drift effects between seasons and situations with different goal distances. The most striking and surprising result was the exceedingly large scatter of flight directions at Abisko, particularly in spring. We suggest that such an exaggerated scatter may be associated with final approach orientation, where migrants reach their specific goals from all various directions by final navigation within a more wide-ranging goal region. The larger scatter of autumn flight directions at Abisko compared to Lund may be due to exploratory flights in variable directions being more common at initial departure from breeding sites than later during migratory passage. These surprising results highlight the importance of studying and analysing orientation during final approach to (and initial departure from) migratory goals for understanding the orientation systems of migratory birds.  相似文献

In-situ feeding habits of the copepods Temora turbinata and T. stylifera were investigated by scanning electron microscope examination of fecal pellets, the contents of which reflected copepod gut contents upon capture. Pellet contents were compared with assemblages of available phytoplankton in the water column at the times of zooplankton sampling. Samples were collected in continental shelf and slope waters of the Gulf of Mexico near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Both species ingested a wide size range and taxonomic array of phytoplankters, and to a lesser extent, other crustaceans. Fecal pellets contained primarily the remains of the phytoplankters that were most abundant in the water at times of collection. There was considerable overlap in the food items ingested by adult females of both copepod species, or two stages of T. turbinata copepodites. Thus, T. turbinata and T. stylifera are omnivores, but primarily opportunistic herbivores.  相似文献

Artemia sp. shells were evaluated to determine their accuracy for tracing the passage of algal filaments through the gut of the damselfish Pomacentrus amboinensis Bleeker, 1868 (family Pomacentridae), an omnivorous coral reef fish. An automatic faeces-collection apparatus enabled the quantitative collection of markers and faeces in the laboratory. Defecation rates were similar for light and heavy doses of Artemia sp. shells and controls, indicating no detrimental effects of Artemia sp. shells on the gut throughput rate of P. amboinensis. In addition, similar rates and patterns of the passage of Artemia sp. shells and the algal markers Enteromorpha sp. and Lyngbya sp. indicated that Artemia sp. shells provide a reliable representation of the throughput rate of algal filaments. The mean throughput time of P. amboinensis was 4.6 h ±0.3 SE, with a modal recovery time of 4 h. Laboratory throughput estimates were validated by comparing the distribution patterns of Artemia sp. shells in the dissected gut of specimens administered markers in the laboratory and field. Microarthropods are known as vectors for soil microorganisms, predominantly fungi. This laboratory study uses the widespread unicellular green algae Chlorella vulgaris as model to assess the role of Collembola in algal dispersal and to determine the effects of gut passage on propagation. Living algal cells were observed in 70 % of the faecal pellets of Folsomia candida, Heteromurus nitidus and Protaphorura fimata. Moreover, marker fatty acids for green algae, i.e. 16:2ω6,9 and 16:3ω3,6,9, were consistently detected in the pellets. Compared to the algal diet, the high content of methyl-branched total lipid fatty acid (TLFA) with hydroxyl substitution indicated microbial colonisation during gut passage. The TLFA profile of faeces revealed no species-specific differences but similar changes in microbial communities over the duration of feeding, indicating comparable indigenous bacteria and colonisation mechanisms during gut passage. In sum, faecal pellets of soil microarthropods such as Collembola can act as a vector for both dietary algae and specific gut-associated microorganisms, with the latter likely involved in resource degradation inside and outside the gut habitat.  相似文献

The composition of the diet of Citharus linguatula (L.) off the coast of the Gulf of Valencia, Spain, was determined between October 1989 and October 1990. The percentage of empty stomachs remained constant throughout the year, except for the period August to September, when a maximum was recorded coinciding with the reproductive period. Crustaceans (Mysidacea and Decapoda) and teleosts constituted the main prey. The composition of the prey ingested varied with predator size; small specimens contained a greater number of mysids in their stomachs, while decapods and fishes were more abundant in the stomachs of larger specimens. Diets varied seasonally: mysids were more important during autumn, whereas decapods were more important during winter and spring. Fishes were numerically most important in the diet in summer, but the frequency of occurrence was constant throughout the year.  相似文献

Some western Norwegian fjords host extraordinarily abundant and persistent populations of the mesopelagic, coronate scyphomedusa, Periphylla periphylla. In these environments, from late autumn to spring, the medusae undertake regular diel vertical migrations into surface waters. From unique observations obtained with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), including observations made without artificial light, we observed that 90% of the medusae swam with their tentacles in aboral position. Stomach content analyses of surface-collected specimens revealed that the medusae ate mainly calanoid copepods, but ostracods and large euphausiids were also prominent components of their diets. The clearance rate potential of P. periphylla, assessed from in situ observations and stomach contents, was comparable to that of similar-sized, epipelagic gelatinous species. Our findings suggest that P. periphylla behave as active predators in surface waters.  相似文献

A seasonal study of carbon content of living and of carbon and nitrogen content of non-living particulate material in seawater is presented. Grazing by Pseudocalanus minutus on living and non-living particles has been investigated over 1 year. Seasonal variations in the food uptake were associated with seasonal variations of each chemical component of the particles in the water. The amount of non-living carbon constituted the major part of the food ingested, irrespective of season. The ingested living carbon always accounted for a small fraction of the total copepod body carbon. The proportion of living carbon ingested could be equivalent to or even higher than non-living carbon at times during the late spring, summer and fall. The concentration of both living and non-living material within each particle peak of the spectra in the water seemed to affect the balance between non-living and living particle uptake. Non-living particles cannot be considered only as a supplementary food source for small copepods; they are a basic food for P. minutus at all times.  相似文献

The significance of the microheterotrophic utilization of faecal pellets derived from Gibbula umbilicaris — one of the most important gastropod species in the Posidonia oceanica ecosystem around the Isle of Ischia (Italy) — was investigated by means of microcosm-experiments. Initial total organic carbon (TOC) content of faecal pellets was 32 gC (mg faeces dry wt)-1 and declined continuously over a 2-month incubation period. The low values of TOC coincided with SEM observations of pellets which were found to consist mainly of diatom frustules and other slowly utilizable material. In a long-term experiment freshly egested faecal pellets were rapidly colonized by bacteria, which reached densities of up to 14x105 cells (mg faeces dry wt)-1 within 12 h. Thereafter bacterial numbers declined and fluctuated in a very narrow range between 2 and 3.5x105 cells (mg faeces dry wt)-1 during the two months of the investigation period. In short-term experiments (over 5 d) similar trends were observed. Peak densities of attached bacteria were followed by a decline of this population. Concurrently the number of free-living bacteria increased. This observation was confirmed by O2 consumption measurements of freshly egested faecal pellets over 24 h, where the highest O2 consumption rates were obtained after 12 h, followed by a rapid decline, thus supporting the view that detachment of bacteria may occur. Moreover, the respiration data indicate that about 4% of faecal TOC are remineralized within the first day.  相似文献

Weight-specific contents of asorbic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, folate and vitamin B12 were analysed in natural zooplankton collected from a sea water lagoon in a halibut fry production plant. The samples of natural zooplankton were collected from April/May to the end of June during two consecutive spring blooms. For comparison, the same vitamins were measured in nauplii of Artemia franciscana, just after hatching and after enrichment for 24 and 48 h with a commercial diet. The changes in vitamin content in zooplankton, which consisted mainly of Temora longicornis, during the two spring blooms were <2.5-fold for each specific vitamin. The large number of high quality halibut fry produced using the plankton as a dietary source suggests that the plankton contained sufficient amounts of all water-soluble vitamins. With the exception of thiamin and ascorbic acid, Artemia– both newly hatched and enriched for 24 and 48 h – contained higher levels of water-soluble vitamins than natural zooplankton.
