Acute toxicity of ammonia was determined for cultured larval, postlarval, and wild adult lobsters (Homarus americanus) in 1988. Ammonia tolerance was found to increase with ontogenetic development. Based on 96-h LC50 values of 58 mg l–1 NH4 + + NH3 l–1 seawater (0.72 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage I larvae, 87 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (1.7 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage II larvae, 125 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (2.13 mg NH3) for Stage III larvae, 144 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (2.36 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage IV postlarvae, 377 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (5.12 mg NH3 l–1) for adult lobsters at 5°C and 219 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (3.25 mg NH3 l–1) for adult lobsters at 20°C, recommendations for safe levels of total ammonia and un-ionized ammonia were calculated using an application factor of 0.1. Effects of ammonia on osmoregulatory capacity were studied on postlarvae and adults. Ability of postlarvae and adults to hyper-regulate in low-salinity media decreased after exposure to ammonia. In postlarval lobsters, osmoregulatory capacity was significantly affected in ammonia concentrations exceeding 32 mg l–1. Osmoregulatory capacity in adult lobsters (5 and 20°C) was affected at 150 mg l–1. In postlarval lobsters, a minimum exposure time of 12 h was required to impair osmoregulatory capacity. The decrease in hemolymph osmotic pressure was caused by lower hemolymph sodium concentrations. The presence of ammonia in the external medium could markedly affect the Na+/NH4 + transport mechanism by permanently, temporarily, or partially impairing the transport sites for sodium.  相似文献

Juveniles of the prawnPenaeus chinensis (3.96 ±0.18 cm, 0.36±0.06 g) reared in Taiwan in 1989 were exposed to different concentrations of ammonia and nitrite, by a static renewal method in 33 seawater at pH 7.94 and at 26 °C. The 24, 48, 96 and 120 h LC50 (median lethal concentration) of ammonia were 3.29, 2.10, 1.53 and 1.44 mg l–1 for NH3-N (un-ionized ammonia as nitrogen) and 79.97, 51.14, 37.00 and 35.09 mg l–1 for ammonia-N (un-ionized plus ionized ammonia as nitrogen). The 24, 96, 120, 144 and 192 h LC50 of nitrite-N were 339, 37.71, 29.18, 26.98 and 22.95 mg l–1. The LC50 decreased with increasing exposure time. During the first 96 h,P. chinesis juveniles were more susceptible to ammonia than nitrite. However, prawns were less tolerant to nitrite than ammonia when exposed for more than 96 h. The threshold was found at 120 and 192 h for ammonia and nitrite, respectively, on the toxicity curves. Incipient LC50 was 1.44 mg l–1 for NH3-N, 35.09 mg l–1 for ammonia-N and 22.95 mg l–1 for nitrite-N. The safe value forP. chinensis juveniles was 0.14, 3.51 and 2.30 mg l–1, respectively.  相似文献

This investigation was carried out to determine the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the Kirkgeçit and Ozancik hot springs. The study areas are located northeast and southwest of the town of Çan, Çanakkale. During the investigation, geological maps of the hot springs and its surroundings were prepared, and hot waters and rock samples were collected from the study sites. The Paleogene–Neogene aged andesite, trachyandesite, andesitic tuff, silicified tuff and tuffites form the basement rocks in the Ozancik hot spring area. In the Kirkgeçit hot spring area, there are Lower Triassic aged mica and quartz schists at the basement rocks. The unit is covered by limestones and marbles of the same age. They are overlain by Quaternary alluvial deposits. A chemical analysis of the Kirkgeçit hot water indicates that it is rich in SO4 2– (1200.2 mg L–1), Cl (121.7 mg L–1), HCO3 (32.5 mg L–1), Na+ (494 mg L–1), K+ (30.2 mg L–1), Ca2+ (102 mg L–1), Mg2+ (15.2 mg L–1), and SiO2 (65.22 mg L–1). Chemical analysis of the Ozancik hot water indicates that it is rich in SO4 2– (575 mg L–1), Cl (193.2 mg L–1), HCO3 (98.5 mg L–1), Na+ (315 mg L–1), K+(7.248 mg L–1), Ca2+ (103 mg L–1), Mg2+ (0.274 mg L–1), and SiO2(43.20 mg L–1). The distribution of ions in the hot waters on the Schoeller diagram has an arrangement of r(Na++K+)>rCa2+>rMg2+ and r(SO4 2–)>rCl>r(HCO3 ). In addition, the inclusion of Fe2+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Ni2+ and Hg2+ in the hot water samples indicates potential natural inorganic contamination. The water analysis carried out following the ICPMS-200 technique was evaluated according to the World Health Organisation and Turkish Standards. The use and the effects of the hot water on human health are also discussed in the paper.  相似文献

A field project encompassing wet-only rainwater sampling was initiated as a bilateral Fiji/Australia activity. Normally, biweekly samples were collected, using a wet-only rainwater sampler, and analysed for H+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, NH4 +, Cl, NO3 , SO4 2–, PO4 3-, methane sulphonic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid and acetic acid. The pH of the rainwater ranged between 5.730 and 4.480 with an average value of 5.176, slightly lower than the pH of unpolluted rainwater saturated with atmospheric CO2(pH = 5.650). Na+and Clwere the major ions with average concentrations of 98.15 M and 109.57 M respectively. There is an excellent correlation between the cation sum (average 147.71 eq L-1) and the anion sum (average 142.12 eq L-1) attesting to the quality of the data generated. This paper presents the detailed results of the study for a relatively clean remote island site in Suva, Fiji, latitude 18° 09 S, longitude 178° 27 E, height 6 m, and outlines prospects for further work.  相似文献

Characterisation of the leachate originating from the Ano Liosia landfill (situated in Attica region, Greece) as well as assessment on the quality of the local aquifer were carried out. The experimental results showed that most of the parameters examined in the leachate samples such as colour, conductivity, TS, COD, NH3–N, PO4–P, SO4 2–, Cl, K+, Fe and Pb were found in high levels. The organic load was quite high since the COD concentrations were in the range of 3250–6125mgL–1. In addition, the low BOD/COD ratio (0.096–0.195), confirmed that the majority of this organic matter is not easily biodegradable. The groundwater near the landfill site was characterised as not potable and not suitable for irrigation water, since most of the physical and chemical parameters examined – such as colour, conductivity, DS, hardness, Cl, NH3–N, COD, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Fe, Ni and Pb exceeded the permissible limits given by EE, EPA and the Greek Ministry of Agriculture. Furthermore, this study presents the application of the hydrologic evaluation of landfill performance (HELP) model for the determination of the yearly leakage from the base of the landfill after the final capping.  相似文献

The dissolved nitrogen pool in aquatic systems is comprised of many different nitrogen forms, both inorganic and organic. Interaction among these nitrogen forms at the level of uptake and enzyme activity is, with the exception of NH4+ and NO3, not completely understood. Nitrate reductase (NR) and urease (UA) activities in the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle were measured in NO3, NH4+, and urea-sufficient cultures before and after challenge additions of NH4+, NO3, and urea in a factorial design. NR and UA were constitutively expressed during growth on NO3, NH4+, and urea. Growth on NH4+ or urea resulted in NR activities that were <10% of the activity observed in the NO3-grown culture, while growth on NO3 resulted in UA values that were ~35% of the activities during growth on either NH4+ or urea. The addition of NH4+ or urea to NO3-grown cultures resulted in an immediate decrease in cellular NO3 uptake rate, which was not mirrored by an immediate repression of in vitro NR activity; however, the diel peak in NR was suppressed in these challenge experiments. The addition of NO3 or NH4+ to urea-grown cultures resulted in non-significant decreases in the urea uptake rate. UA was not impacted by NO3 addition, but NH4+ addition significantly decreased UA throughout the experiment. These studies demonstrate that the uptake and assimilation of NO3 and urea may not be subject to the same internal feedback mechanism when challenged with other nitrogen substrates.Communicated by J.P. The toxicity of fenitrothion was determined in larvae (nauplii, Zoeae 1 to 3, Mysis 1 to 3), postlarvae (PL stages) and juvenile shrimp (Penaeus japonicus Bate), in two media, seawater (SW) and diluted seawater (DSW) (1100 and 550 mosM kg−1, ≃ 37 and 19‰ S). The effects of fenitrothion on the osmoregulatory capacities (OC) of juveniles were recorded. A gill and epipodite histopathological study was also conducted. For larvae in seawater, 24 and 48 h LC50s ranged from 32.9 μg l−1 (Zoeae 2) to 10.7 μg l−1 (Mysis 3), and from 3.9 μg l−1 (Zoeae 3) to 2.0 μg l−1 (Mysis 3), respectively; 48 and 96 h  LC50s in postlarvae (PL) at the same salinity ranged from 1.8 μg l−1 (PL1) to 0.6 μg l−1 (PL5), and from 0.3 μg l−1 (PL7) to 0.4 μg l−1 (PL15). In juveniles, 96 h LC50s were 0.8 μg l−1 in seawater and 1.5 μg l−1 in diluted seawater. From hatching to juvenile stages, the overall trend was a rapid decrease (from nauplii to PL5–PL7) followed by a slight increase (from PL7 to PL15 and juveniles) in the shrimp's ability to tolerate the insecticide. In juveniles kept in seawater and in diluted seawater, fenitrothion decreased the osmoregulatory capacity (OC = difference between the hemolymph osmotic pressure and the osmotic pressure of the medium) at both lethal and sublethal concentrations. This effect was time- and dose-dependent. In SW, the decrease in hypo-OC was ˜ 25% at sublethal concentrations and ˜ 35% at the 96 h LC50. In DSW, the decrease in hyper-OC was ˜ 10 to 15% at sublethal concentrations. In SW, shrimp were able to recover their OC in less than 48 h when transferred to water free of pesticide. In DSW, recovery at 48 h was only possible after exposure to the lowest tested sublethal concentration. Haemocytic congestions (thrombosis) of the gills, lamellae necrosis and other alterations of gills and epipodites (breakage of the cuticle, reduction of the hemolymph lacunae) were noted in juveniles exposed to lethal and sublethal concentrations of fenitrothion. The nature of protein catabolism in a wide range of species of midwater zooplankton was investigated. The weight-specific ammonia excretion rates (g NH3–N g–1 dry wt h–1, y) decline exponentially with minimum depth of occurreece (MDO, x), y=163.4 x–0.479±0.212 (95%ci) (CI=confidence interval), when temperature is held constant. The change in ammonia excretion can be partially explained by the decrease in percent protein (%P) with MDO, %P=80.17 MDO–0.148±0.122 (95%ci) The atomic O:N ratio of freshly caught zooplankters ranged from 9.1 to 91, with most measurements between 9 and 25. Detailed studies were carried out on the response of one of the species studied (Gnathophausia ingens) to starvation (28 d). After 14 d of starvation the average ammonia excretion rate declined by more than 75% to less than 1 g NH3–N g–1 wet wt h–1, although the average oxygen consumption declined by only 13% within the first 7 d of starvation and then remained stable. This differential response of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion to starvation resulted in an increase in the average O:N ratio of starved animals from an initial 33 to 165 after 21 d. The average O:N ratios of fed mysids remained below 38 during the experiment. G. ingens maintains a relatively uniform metabolic rate during starvation by relying more heavily on its large lipid stores than when being fed.  相似文献

Effects of benthic macrofauna (Corophium volutator, Hydrobia sp., Nereis virens) on benthic community metabolism were studied over a 65-d period in microcosms kept in either light/dark cycle (L/D-system) or in continuous darkness (D-system). Sediment and animals were collected in January 1986 in the shallow mesohaline estuary, Norsminde Fjord, Denmark. The primary production in the L/D-system after 10 d acted as a stabilizing agent on the O2 and CO2 flux rates, whereas the D-system showed decreasing O2 and CO2 flux throughout the period. Mean O2 uptake over the experimental period ranged from 0.38 to 1.24 mmol m–2 h–1 and CO2 release varied from 0.80 to 1.63 mmol m–2 h–1 in both systems. The presence of macrofauna stimulated community respiration rates measured in darknes, 1.4 to 3.0 and 0.9 to 2.0 times for O2 and CO2, respectively. In contrast, macrofauna lowered primary production. Gross primary production varied from 1.06 to 2.26 mmol O2 m–2 h–1 and from 1.26 to 2.62 mmol CO2 m–2 h–1. The community respiratory quotient (CRQ, CO2/O2) was generally higher in the begining of the experiment (0–20 d, mean 1.89) than in the period from Days 20 to 65 (mean 1.38). The L/D-system exhibited lower CRQ (ca. 1) than the D-system. The community photosynthetic quotient varied for both net and gross primary production from 0.64 to 1.03, mean 0.81. The heterotrophic D-system revealed a sharp decrease in the sediment content of chlorophyll a as compared to the initial content. In the autotrophic L/D-system, a significant increase in chlorophyll a concentration was observed in cores lacking animals and cores with C. volutator (The latter species died during the experiment). Due to grazing and other macrofauna activities other cores of the L/D-system exhibited no significant change in chlorophyll a concentration. Community primary production was linearly correlated to the chlorophyll a content in the 0 to 0.5 cm layer. Fluxes of DIN (NH4 ++NO2 +NO3 ) did not reveal significant temporal changes during the experiment. Highest rates were found for the cores containing animals, mainly because of an increased NH4 + flux. The release of DIN decreased significantly due to uptake by benthic microalgae in the L/D-system. No effects of the added macrofauna were found on particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), total carbon dioxide (TCO2) and NH4 + in the sediment. The ratio between POC and PON was nearly constant (9.69) in all sediment dephts. The relationship between TCO2 and NH4 + was more complex, with ratios below 2 cm depth similar to those for POC/PON, but with low ratios (3.46) at the sediment surface.  相似文献

Sodium- and potassium-activated ATPase (Na+–K+-ATPase) has been demonstrated in excretory organs of Sepia officinalis, using a cytochemical procedure. In the renal appendages, both epithelia of the pancreatic appendages, the folded epithelium of the branchial heart appendage and the transport-active epithelium of the gill, the enzyme is localized exclusively in the basolateral cell membranes, i.e., the membranes of the basal labyrinth and the lateral plasma membranes. In addition, Na+–K+-ATPase is also located in the sarcolemma of the muscle fibres of the branchial heart. Distribution and localization of the enzyme is further substantiated by [3H]-ouabain autoradiography. The possible involvement of Na+–K+-ATPase in the excretion of ammonia and in ionic regulation in dibranchiate cephalopods is discussed. This study was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and is part of a doctoral dissertation  相似文献

Ocean sequestration of CO2 is proposed as a possible measure to mitigate environmental changes due to the increasing atmospheric concentration of the gas. However, toxic effects of CO2 on marine organisms are poorly understood. We therefore studied acid–base responses and mortality during exposure to fatal levels of CO2 in three marine fishes (Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus; yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata; and starspotted dogfish, Mustelus manazo). The teleosts died during exposure to seawater equilibrated with a gas mixture containing 5% CO2 (water PCO2 4.95 kPa); 100% mortality occurred within 8 h for yellowtail and within 48 h for flounder. Only 20% mortality was recorded at 72 h for the dogfish during exposure to 7% CO2 (water PCO2 6.96 kPa). Arterial pH (pHa) initially decreased, but completely recovered within 1–24 h for the teleosts at 1% and 3%, although the recovery was slower and complete only at 1% (water PCO2 0.99 kPa) for the dogfish. During exposure to 5%, the flounder died after the pHa had been completely restored, suggesting that the mortality was not due to plasma acidosis. During exposure to 1% hypercapnia, plasma [Cl] appeared to be the main counter ion to balance increases in plasma [HCO3-]. There was a 1:1 stoichiometry for the rise in [HCO3-] and the fall in [Cl] for the teleosts, whereas the ratio was 1:0.4 for the dogfish at 1% CO2. At the higher levels of hypercapnia, the rise in [HCO3-] consistently exceeded the fall in [Cl], and plasma [Na+] significantly increased. These results do not agree with the generally accepted model for acid–base regulation in marine fish in which Na+/H+ exchangers are assumed to play a predominant role, and indicate that an acid–base regulatory mechanism differs between teleost and elasmobranch fishes, as well as the intensity of acidic stress.Communicated by T. Tilapia mossambica (Peters), acclimated to and tested in fresh water at 30°C, maintained a routine respiratory quotient (R Q) of about unity and an ammonia quotient (A Q) (Vol. NH2/Vol. O2) of about 0.2 at high ambient oxygen concentrations. At low oxygen concentrations (below 2 ppm) R Q and A Q increased sharply to values of 8 and 1, respectively (at 0.6 ppm), indicating a close relationship of increase in anaerobic energy utilization and increase in protein metabolism at inadequate oxygen concentrations. T. mossambica (8 cm), exercised continuously with intervening sampling and flushing stops for 6 h, at a swimming speed of about 2 body lengths/sec, derived some anaerobic energy throughout the exercise (R Q: 1.2), utilizing more protein the longer the exercise. The coupling of the increased protein metabolism and anaerobic energy utilization may be of advantage in preventing acidosis and also in conserving sodium (Na+) in fish.Part of this work was included in a paper presented at the Centennial Meeting of The American Fisheries Society, September 13–16, 1970, New York.  相似文献

Ammonia toxicity tests were performed with Labeo bata (bata) larvae of three different size groups. One hundred percent survival of larvae (500.0?±?4.0?mg) was recorded when exposed to ammonia concentrations of 1.0–13.56?mg?L?1 at 96?h of exposure. Bata larvae exposed to ammonia concentrations of 15.8–25?mg?L?1 showed 10–74% mortalities. The 96?h LC50 value for 200 (±5), 250 (±2) and 500 (±4) mg bata larvae were 11.5, 16.8 and 22.5?mg?L?1 un-ionised ammonia concentrations, respectively. When fish were exposed to different doses of ammonia, behavioural changes immediately occurred even at the lowest dose. At first, the fish became hyperexcitable, the skin darkened and they showed an increased ventilation frequency, fish behaviour became normal, 24?h after exposure. A 96?h LC50 value of un-ionised ammonia showed direct relationship with the increasing size of bata larvae.  相似文献

Rainwater samples were collected from Tamale town in the 1997 and 1998 rainy seasons. During this period road construction in the Tamale area resulted in the generation of suspended dust in the atmosphere. Analysis of the samples for major ions showed elevated levels of Cl. Ion ratios with Cl (Na+/Cl, K+/Cl, Ca2+/Cl/Cl Mg2+/Cl and SO4 2–/Cl) in rainwater samples were higher than the corresponding ratios in seawater. Some samples also showed elevated concentrations of Fe, Mn, Al and Zn, all of which except Zn showed a correlation with the dry periods between rainfall events. Consequently, it was concluded that dust generated from lateritic soils was probably the major cause of the increase in concentration of these metals. Aluminium and Fe concentrations were observed to be higher than the World Health Organization drinking water guide limits.  相似文献

The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is euryhaline (growing between 2 and 97 ppt) and has previously been considered an osmoconformer. We suggest that B. plicatilis is an osmoregulator, exhibiting a pattern of Na+/K+ ATPase activity in response to salinity consistent with that of other osmoregulating euryhaline invertebrates. To examine salinity tolerance, growth rates between 5 and 60 ppt were determined. The activity of Na+/K+ ATPase was examined, over the same range of salinities, by measuring ATPase activity in rotifer homogenates in the presence and absence of a Na+/K+ ATPase inhibitor. Maximum specific growth rate (0.95 day–1) occurred at 16 ppt, highest mean amictic eggs per female (1.41) occurred at 20 ppt, and both parameters decreased rapidly as salinity increased. Egg development time was constant with salinity at 0.92 days. The activity of Na+/K+ ATPase per milligram protein increased from 3.9 µmol h–1 at 5 ppt to 6.8 µmol h–1 at 50 ppt and accounted for 15 and 30% of total ATPase activity, respectively. We suggest that these observations are consistent with increasing stress at high salinities and the occurrence of a hypo-osmoregulatory response. Given the high ATP consumption of Na+/K+ ATPase at high salinities, it is possible that a proportion of the corresponding decreases in growth rate and egg production are a direct cost of regulation.Communicated by J.P. With juvenile fish as the subject, the effects of low concentration ammonia on antioxidant system were studied using Mugil cephalus. Samples of gill and liver tissue were obtained from 0.35, 0.70, 1.5 and 3?mg/L ammonia groups at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 days of exposure, at which times the biomarkers were measured. Results showed that gill malondialdehyde (MDA) content exhibited an initial significant increase (p?≤?0.05) at unionised ammonia concentrations of 0.70, 1.5 and 3.0?mg/L on day 5, followed by subsequent declines, while liver MDA levels exhibited significant increases (p?≤?0.05) at unionised ammonia concentrations of 1.5?mg/L starting on day 10 and at 3.0?mg/L starting on day 5. With exposure to ammonia at different concentrations, Na+-K+-ATPase activity in liver and gill decreased over time. The Na+-K+-ATPase activity was negatively related to ammonia concentration from 0.70 to 3.0?mg/L. Overall, our results show that MDA and Na+-K+-ATPase, evaluated here as potential biomarkers of ammonia exposure, exhibited responses to sublethal concentrations of ammonia that were concentration dependent.  相似文献

The red algaGelidium sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur. has been cultured in chemostats to assess the effects of light quality and photon-fluence rate (PFR) on growth, photosynthesis and biochemical composition. Plants under blue and red light (BL and RL) showed higher growth rates than under white light (WL) of the same PFR (40 mol m–2 s–1). The light-saturated rate of photosynthesis was higher for algae grown under BL and RL than for algae grown under WL. When algae were transferred to WL of moderate PFR (100 mol m–2 s–1), the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis decreased, being higher in previously RL-grown algae than in previously BL- and WL-grown algae. The initial slope of photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves () was affected by PFR but not by light quality. Pigment content was little affected by light quality. Light-quality treatments also affected the biochemical composition of the alga; previous exposure to various light treatments activate or repress several metabolical pathways that are fully expressed in the subsequent phase of WL of moderate PFR. Thus, phycobiliproteins and soluble proteins increased for previously BL- and RL-grown algae, whereas insoluble carbohydrate concentration was reduced, indicating a change of the C-partitioning between carbon compounds and organic nitrogen compounds. Inorganic nitrogen metabolism was also affected by light: under WL of moderate PFR, NO3 was totally depleted from sea water, and maximal values of NO3 uptake were recorded. In addition, neither NO2 nor NH4 + was released. However, when algae were transferred to a low PFR, there was a drastic reduction of NO3 uptake under WL, which only partially recovered over time. It was accompanied by the release of NO2 , but not NH4 +, to the culture medium. Under BL and RL, however, there was a transient enhancement of NO3 uptake that was followed by a net release of NO2 and NH4 . Growth rates were not correlated with PFR. This could be due to the the dynamics of internal carbon mobilization and accumulation in the algae. When algae were exposed to a moderate PFR of WL, carbon requirements for growth were satisfied by photosynthesis. Thus, there was a net accumulation of carbon in the tissue. In contrast, when algae were exposed to low PFRs of either WL, BL or RL, observed growth rates could not be maintained by photosynthesis and carbon was mobilized.  相似文献

Here we demonstrate that an aqueous solution of the herbicide amitrole can be completely depolluted at pH 3.0 by anodic oxidation and electro-Fenton process. Anodic oxidation gives faster degradation with a boron-doped diamond anode than with a Pt anode. Electro-Fenton with a Pt anode and 1 mmol l –1 Fe2+ as catalyst yields the quickest depollution. Amitrole decay always follows a pseudo first-order reaction. NO3 and NH4+ are accumulated in the medium during mineralization, although volatile N-products are also formed. These environmentally friendly electrochemical treatments could be applied to the remediation of wastewaters containing amitrole.  相似文献

Estimates of daily fecundity, hatching success and fecal pellet production are reported for Acartia clausi females exposed for 10 d to low levels of phenol and ammonia. Copepods were collected in 1991 and 1992 from a southern coastal area of the Mar Grande of Taranto (southern Italy). A reduction in egg numbers and fecal pellet production was observed for females after 8 d of exposure to 500 g l-1 phenol concentration. Ammonia (120 g l-1) produced a significant increment in egg production, but hatching success was reduced by about 50% after nine exposure days. A. clausi was more sensitive to ammonia than phenol at high concentrations (24-h LC50 phenol-32.26 mg l-1; 24-h LC50 ammonia=0.91 mg l-1). At low concentrations, only long-term exposure to phenol determined a reduction in fecundity.  相似文献

Summary.  Several freshwater invertebrate and vertebrate prey species rely on chemosensory cues, including non-injury released disturbance cues, to assess and avoid local predation threats. The prevailing hypothesis is that a pulse of ammonia released by disturbed or stressed prey functions as the disturbance cue. Here, we test this hypothesis in two phylogenetically distant freshwater prey fishes, convict cichlids and rainbow trout. In our first experiment, we measured NH4 + concentration in tanks containing shoals of cichlid or trout before and after exposure to a realistic model predator (or left undisturbed). We failed to find an increase in ambient NH4 + concentration for either cichlids or trout. In our second experiment, we exposed cichlids or trout to NH4 + at 0.1 or 0.5 mg L−1 (or a distilled water control) and measured the change in antipredator behaviour (time moving, foraging rate and area use). We found no consistent increase in antipredator behaviour in response to NH4 +. In our third study, we exposed cichlids and trout to the disturbance cues of cichlids or trout (versus the odour of undisturbed donors). We found significant increases in antipredator behaviour, regardless of donor species, for both cichlids and trout. Thus, the results of our first two experiments do not support the hypothesis that ammonium functions as a disturbance cue in prey fishes. However, the results of our final experiment do confirm the use of disturbance cues in convict cichlids and rainbow trout and support that hypothesis that the disturbance cue is indeed some generalized metabolic byproduct.  相似文献
