Siderastrea siderea and Montastrea annularis were labeled in situ with NaH14CO3. The corals were sampled over a period of 11 days and the radioactivity remaining in the ethanolsoluble and ammonia-soluble fractions measured. Total radioactivity in the corals fell to about 1/3 after one night and then to about 1/3 in the next 10 days. The ethanol-soluble radioactivity is probably converted to the less soluble, ammonia-extractable, material in the dark.Contribution No. 1514 from the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, 10 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, Florida 33149, USA.  相似文献

Populations of the marine wood-boring isopod Limnoria tripunctata Menzies were cultivated and interbred in the laboratory in order to determine whether geographically separated populations would interbreed. Two series of interbreeding studies were conducted. In the first, field populations from 11 Atlantic and Caribbean sites and 3 Pacific sites were interbred with a North Western Atlantic population from Beaufort, North Carolina (USA). Viable crossings, to at least F 1, occurred in all but one case—that of a BeaufortxChatham (Massachusetts, USA) cross. In the second series of experiments, field populations from 9 Atlantic and Caribbean sites were crossed with populations from St. Teresa, Florida, Gulf of Mexico. In this case also, all crosses except one produced viable offspring, not only to the F 1, but to the F 2 generations as well. The St. Teresa x Chatham cross was not successful. Geographic distance was not a factor in the success of crossbreeding between disjunct populations. Chatham populations (mainly) are now believed to represent a valid but previously obscure species, Limnoria tuberculata Sowinski, and not a variant of L. tripunctata Menzies. Enhanced viality or vigor, as determined from rate of wood destruction, population growth rate and survival, was indicated in several crossings, but this was not necessarily correlated with distance between populations. Observations were made on the manner in which the species has achieved a worldwide distribution, and a hypothesis is put forward to explain the evolution of species related to L. tripunctata.Contribution from Zoology Department, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, and Duke University Marine Laboratory, Beaufort, North Carolina, and the Department of Oceanography, No. 289, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. Partitioning of the food resources by two coexisting pufferfishes (Sphoeroides spengleri and S. testudineus) from Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA, was investigated. Gut contents from 453 bandtail and 339 checkered puffers were analyzed. The diets of both species consisted of a variety of benthic prey, but only crustaceans and molluscs were important prey groups. While differences were found in the proportions of general prey categories eaten by these fishes, both species consumed substantial quantities of brachyuran crabs, bivalves, and gastropods. Specific identification of the prey items within these three food categories revealed additional differences in prey between the two puffer species. This partitioning of the food resources by bandtail and checkered puffers was found between both species overall, between overlapping size ranges, and between both species' most abundant size group. Differences in food habits between these two fishes illustrate that congeners with virtually identical mouth structure and complete spatial overlap can significantly partition the food resources.Contribution No. 78-58M from the U.S. Department of Commerce, NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service, Southeast Fisheries Center, Miami Laboratory, Miami, Florida, USA.  相似文献

Twenty stomiatoid fish larvae (3.1 to 21,9 mm) belonging to the genera Bathophilus, Cyclothone, and Stomias were collected in plankton nets from surface waters over depths of 3 to 4 m from Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA. The adults are mesopelagic in the open water of the Florida Current and, therefore, these larvae were presumably advected in parcels of high salinity water into the shallows of Biscayne Bay by winds, tides, or currents. The presence of these larvae suggest that sewage discharged into the Florida Current may be recycling into coastal waters as well as into Biscayne Bay.Scientific Contribution No. 1403, University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Rates of NO 3 - uptake by individual blades of Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh were measured at different flow rates in the laboratory. Dissolution rates of hemispherical, plaster buttons attached to the blade surface provided a relative measure of flow rates over blades used in uptake experiments and also over intact blades of adult kelp plants in situ (Laguna Beach, California, USA; 1981). Laboratory results indicated that uptake was saturated at a flow rate equivalent to 2.5 cm s-1 current velocity. Flow rates over intact blades in situ always exceeded this uptake saturation level. Wave surge and movement of plant surfaces relative to the surrounding water provided sufficient flow to saturate uptake, even in a dense kelp canopy during low-current and calm sea-state conditions.  相似文献

A population of the regular sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus was sampled, and the gonad volume and test diameter recorded at monthly intervals for 10 years. Parameters abstracted from the data included the size and date when the gonads were full and when they were spent, the spawning pattern, and the spawn output. Environmental parameters available were sea temperature and rainfall. Correlations were determined among these. A correlation was also found between the appearance in successive years of a brood of young urchins on the shore and the temperature and rainfall.Contribution No. 1490 from Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, 10 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, Florida 33149, USA. Benthic community respiration and the cycling of N and P were seasonally investigated in the unprotected, sandy sediments (Z5m) of the nearshore zone of the Georgia Bight, USA in 1981 and 1982. Nutrient exchange across the sediment-water interface was calculated from a diffusive model, measured by in-situ enclosure experiments and estimated from whole core incubations. Seasonally changing pore water profiles indicated that the sediments were not in steady-state with respect to N and P and showed the characteristics of enhanced interstitial water movement by benthic animals. Over an annual period the total flux of nitrogen measured in situ averaged 1812 mol m-2 d-1 from the sediments. NH 4 + flux accounted for the vast majority of the total directly measured N flux (77%), followed by nitrate + nitrite (14%), and dissolved organic nitrogen (9%). Phosphorus flux averaged 537 mol m-2 d-1. A large ratio of in-situ fluxes to calculated diffusive fluxes (5.2:1) indicated flux enhancement due to benthic animal activity. ammonium fluxes measured in situ did not agree well with the rate of NH 4 + produced in incubated whole cores (11.7 mmol m-2 d-1). Relative rates of C, N and P release throughout the year fluctuated considerably. Generally, nutrient fluxes were not simply related to respiration or temperature. As respiration was highly correlated with temperature, however, this suggested that respiration-regeneration was temporarily decoupled from exchange across the sediment-water interface. The annual C-N-P flux stoichiometry was 130:3.1:1. Using the rate at which NH 4 + was produced in incubated cores the stoichiometry was 120:21:1. The anomalously low N flux measured in situ was attributed to a combination of denitrification and wave-and current-induced sediment nutrient flushing. The potential for sediment flushing is high as experiments showed that sediments were fluidized or resuspended down to 25 cm during large storms. Benthic nutrient flux contributed 40% to the annual P but only 11% to the annual N requirements of the pelagic primary producers. This is Contribution No. 558 from the University of Georgia Marine Institute. Primary productivity and the flux of DO14C, dissolved saccharides (DSAC) and dissolved free primary amines (DFPA) were followed in the Sargasso Sea, Caribbean and upwelling waters of Peru. Average carbon fixation rates were 42.8, 292.8 and 4791.6 mg C m-2 d-1, respectively, with nocturnal respiration rates ranging from 9.8–16.3% of gross photosynthesis for the 3 areas. The release of DO14C, as a percentage of the total carbon fixed in photosynthesis, was non-detectable in the Sargasso Sea, and 3.2 and 4.4% for the Caribbean and Peruvian phytoplankton communities. Few significant changes in DSAC concentrations were recorded over a 36-h incubation period in the Sargasso Sea and Caribbean stations, whereas light-dependent accumulations of DSAC and DFPA were noted in Peruvian stations which were strongly correlated with total phytoplankton productivity. In the Peruvian stations, the average accumulation rate was 234 mg DSAC-C m-2h-1 while the average rate of nocturnal decomposition was 141 mg DSAC-C m-2h-1; diurnal and nocturnal rates of DFPA accumulation and decomposition were similar (2 mg DFPA-C m-2h-1). These data were used to calculate bacterial production in the upwelling waters of Peru. A general discussion of 14C-technique and routine analytical techniques for DSAC analysis is presented, as DSAC flux exceeded DO14C flux by 17-fold in coastal Peruvian stations.  相似文献

The in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence index (F+DCMU-F-DCMU/F+DCMU) of natural waters was compared to the 14C-determined primary production, and the fluorescence intensity in the presence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (F+DCMU) was studied as a function of extracted and spectrophotometrically determined chlorophyll concentrations. Samples were taken every second week from May through October, 1979, at the station Systrarna situated in a coastal area of the Bottnian Sea. In addition, samples from the Archipelago Sea of the Baltic were collected on board the Finnish research vessel R/S Aranda during the September cruise 1979. The correlations between the fluorescence index and the 14C-determined primary production and between F+DCMU and total chlorophyll concentration were good when samples taken over short time intervals were compared. The shortcomings of both the fluorescence and the 14C methods are discussed. It is concluded that the fluorescence method is useful if it is desirable to follow with high time resolution any changes in the potential for photosynthesis (or primary production) in a water mass over relatively short time periods; e.g. during an algal bloom. The fluorescence method can furthermore be technically developed for automatic monitoring with a high time resolution. Efforts are being made in our laboratory to develop the method further to give information about the in situ rates of photosynthesis rather than the potential for photosynthesis in a photoplankton population.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the life history of various representatives of the meiofauna associated with decaying mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) leaves was investigated. Life cycles, recorded in days, for 6 species of marine nematodes cultured at a temperature of 24°C are as follows: Rhabditis marina 2 1/4; Diplolaimelloides sp., 7; Diplolaimella ocellata, 11 1/2; Enoplus paralittoralis, 22; Oncholaimus sp., 29; Haliplectus dorsalis, 34. In general, life cycles become shorter with increased temperatures; however, as temperatures approach the upper limits which support reproduction, life cycles become slightly lengthened. For most species, the ability to complete a life cycle was inconsistent within the temperature range of 33° to 35°C. Studies with two harpacticoid copepod and two foraminifera species tend to support the 33° to 35°C range as being the thermal stress zone.Contribution No. 1697 from the University of Miami, Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, 10 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, Florida 33149, USA.  相似文献

Phyllorhiza punctata, commonly called the Australian white spotted jellyfish, invaded the Caribbean in the 1960s, becoming established there and subsequently in the United States in the northern Gulf of Mexico (by 2000) and eastern Florida (2001). With the prevailing Loop Current flowing clockwise around the Gulf of Mexico and joining the Gulf Stream along eastern Florida, potential transport of P. punctata along the eastern seaboard of the USA could be facilitated. P. punctata medusae were collected in small numbers along the entire Georgia coast during May–November in 2007 and 2008. Medusa bell diameters increased both years from ca. 10 cm in May to ca. 33 cm in autumn. Specimens lacked zooxanthellae, as reported for medusae in the northern Gulf of Mexico and Florida. It is possible that the P. punctata medusae observed were transported from established populations to the south; however, whether or not this species is established along the Georgia coast has yet to be determined.  相似文献

The pelagic harpacticoid copepod, Macrosetella gracilis (A. Scott), is found in association with colonies of the nitrogen-fixing (diazotrophic), bloomforming cyanobacterium Trichodesmium spp. in tropical and subtropical waters. M. gracilis is one of the few direct grazers of these often toxic cyanobacteria. Experiments investigating NH + 4 regeneration by M. gracilis were conducted in the Caribbean in September 1992 and the Coral Sea, Australia in November 1994. Rates of M. gracilis ingestion of Trichodesmium thiebautii labelled with 15N2 measured in the eastern Caribbean indicated that M. gracilis could consume 33 to 45% of total T. thiebautii colony N d-1 and >100% of new N fixed d-1. We also measured the release of NH + 4 by M. gracilis feeding on T. thiebautii, as well as by non-feeding copepods, using 15N isotope dilution methods. In non-feeding copepods, rates of NH + 4 release increased as numbers of copepods were increased as both copepod numbers and food availability increased. In the presence of T. thiebautii colonies, M. gracilis had an average rate of NH + 4 regeneration of 7.7±1.5 nmol N copepod-1 h-1 (±SE), which was significantly higher than when food was absent (1.9±0.7 nmol N copepod-1 h-1). Rates of M. gracilis excretion were relatively high based on excretion: ingestion ratios, which could be due to having a high-N food source readily available, to sloppy-feeding effects, or as a response to toxins in the cyanobacterium. Incubations of M. gracilis with and without T. erythraeum resulted in significant increases in [NH + 4 ] as a function of copepod density only. Ammonium leakage from the cyanobacterium and/or microheterotroph associates was relatively low. M. gracilis, through excretion and possible mechanical breakage of cells while grazing, appears to provide a direct link between atmospherically derived new nitrogen and regenerated NH + 4 in the oligotrophic systems where Trichodesmium spp. are abundant.  相似文献

The effects of total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), free carbon dioxide [CO2(aq)], and bicarbonate (HCO 3 - ) concentrations on net photosynthetic oxygen evolution of the marine angiosperm Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König collected from Biscayne Bay (1988) and from Tampa Bay (1990), Florida, USA, were examined. Rates of photosynthesis declined by 85% from pH 7.25 to 8.75 in buffered seawater media with constant DIC concentration (2.20 mM), suggesting a strong influence of CO2(aq) concentration. A plateau in the pH-response curve between pH 7.75 and 8.50 indicated possible utilization of HCO 3 - . Responses of photosynthesis measured in buffered seawater media of varying DIC concentrations (0.75 to 13.17 mM) and pH (7.8 to 8.61) demonstrated that photosynthesis is rate-limited at ambient DIC levels. Photosynthesis increased in media with increasing HCO 3 - concentrations but near-constant CO2(aq) levels, confirming HCO 3 - assimilation. Calculated half-saturation constants (K s )for CO2(aq) and HCO 3 - indicated a high affinity for the former [K s (CO2)=3 to 18 M] and a much lower affinity for the latter [K s (HCO 3 - )=1.22 to 8.88 mM]. Calculated V max values for HCO 3 - were generally higher than those for CO2(aq), suggesting relatively efficient HCO 3 - utilization, despite the apparent low affinity for this carbon form.  相似文献

Food selection by laboratory-reared larvae of scaled sardines Harengula pensacolae, and bay anchovies Anchoa mitchilli, was compared. Natural plankton was fed to the larvae during the 22 days following hatching. Food levels in the rearing tanks were maintained at an average of 1,600 to 1,800 potential food organisms per liter. Larvae of both species selected as food copepod nauplii, copepodites, and copepods; initial feeding was on organisms of 50 to 75 body width. Larvae of H. pensacolae averaged 4.2 mm in total length at hatching and those of A. mitchilli about 2.0 mm. H. pensacolae larvae grew about 1.0 mm per day and A. mitchilli 0.70 mm per day. The mean number of food organisms in each digestive tract was greater in H. pensacolae than in A. mitchilli, and the difference in number increased as the larvae grew. Average size of food organisms eaten increased for both species with growth, because of selection by the larvae; the average size of copepodites and copepods in digestive tracts increased at a faste rate in H. pensacolae than A. mitchilli. A. mitchilli longer than 8 mm did not eat copepod nauplii.Contribution No. 170, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Tropical Atlantic Biological laboratory, Miami, Florida 33149, USA.  相似文献

Low level aerial observations were used to obtain synoptic records of the distribution of sea turtle nesting activity along both coasts of Costa Rica. Pertinent environmental information was simultaneously recorded including beach characteristics, river effluents, and evidence of coastal currents. Other correlative information was obtained from detailed maps, current charts, and climatological data. On the Caribbean coast, as expected, green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting was concentrated on the beaches between the Tortuguero and Parismina Rivers. On the Pacific coast, two major nesting beaches for the Pacific ridley Lepidochelys olivacea were found, each having over 100 thousand turtles aggregated offshore during the peak period between September and November. Aggregations were present at least from July through December. Massed nesting occurs each year on these same beaches and the event is known as the salida de flota by the natives of Guanacaste Province. Numerous less important nesting beaches were also found. Nesting density did not correlate well with beach quality but, instead, appeared to be related to the proximity of the beach to offshore currents. Oceanic current systems apparently facilitate the transport of sea turtles to the general vicinity of the important nesting beaches on both coasts of Coata Rica.Contribution No. 1557 from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, Miami, Florida, USA.  相似文献

Pelagic eggs of the scaled sardine Harengula pensacolae (Goode and Bean), have been hatched and reared in the laboratory for the first time. Larvae were reared in two 75 l aquaria under constant illumination, at an average temperature of 26.2°C. Zooplankton collected in a 35 mesh net was fed to the newly hatched larvae, and the diet was supplemented later with Artemia salina nauplii and a pelleted food. Larvae hatched at 4 mm TL (total length), and metamorphosed about 25 days later at 25 to 30 mm TL. Survivors averaged 76 mm TL 100 days after hatching. Of the 500 incubated eggs, 2.8% survived until 20 days, after which no significant natural mortality occurred. Sources of natural mortality included starvation, a copepod parasite (Caligus sp.), and injuries from contact with the sides of the tank. Larvae began feeding at 4.5 mm TL on copepod nauplii averaging 62 in body width. Scaled sardines were photopositive throughout the larval stage.Contribution No. 149, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Tropical Atlantic Biological Laboratory, Miami, Florida 33149, USA.  相似文献

Digestion times, obtained directly from laboratory feeding, were used in conjunction with a day/night series of field samples to estimate the daily ration and specific daily ration of Sagitta enflata Grassi, the most abundant chaetognath in the Gulf Stream near Miami, Florida (USA), during winter and early spring. Feeding was independent of time of day and increased with increasing chaetognath size from 1.7 prey day-1 for the 11.5 mm size class to 2.9 prey day-1 for the 21.5 mm class. The diet of s. enflata consisted of 94.8% copepods having a mean weight of 21.8 g, and 5.2% prey chaetognaths estimated to be two-thirds the length of the predators. The daily ration of S. enflata from 12.5 to 20.5 mm in length increased from 48.3 to 143.3 g of prey dry weight and from 18.5 to 48.1 g of prey carbon. The specific daily ration declined from 0.12 to 0.08 dry weight basis, and from 0.26 to 0.14, carbon basis, over the same size range. Prey chaetognaths contributed as much as 51% of the ration on a carbon basis.  相似文献

The rate of oxygen evolution by the tropical marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium thiebautii was recorded at different times during the day in samples collected in 1992 from the Bahama Islands and the NE Caribbean Sea. This cyanobacterium is unique in that it is the only non-heterocystous diazotroph capable of N2-fixation in daylight. Oxygen evolution was measured under conditions of natural day/night (LD, N=50), constant light (LL, N=14), and constant dark (DD, N=2×14). Photosynthesis vs intensity (P-I) relationships were calculated at various times of day, and the following parameters were used for further evaluation: photosynthesic capacity (P max, 66 to 91 mg O2 mg chl a -1 h-1), initial slope of the P-I curve (, 0.23 to 0.27), dark respiration (R, 12 to 27 mg O2 mg chl a -1 h-1), and the intensity at which O2 consumption is compensated by O2 production (I c, 78 to 160 Em-2 s-1). All means showed large standard deviations (for some parameters more than 200%). In some cases, these variations could be explained with a sinusoidal 24-h time course, but only the compensation point showed a significant daily variation (p0.001) in both LD and DD. The fact that the time course of I c typical for natural conditions remains rhythmic under constant dark conditions strongly suggests a circadian regulation. Few circadian rhythms have been observed in prokaryotes, and this appears to be the first observation of such a rhythm in a cyanobacterium which fixes N2 in daytime.  相似文献

In the Black Sea, during summer stratification, Calanus euxinus (Hulsemann) undertakes diel vertical migrations with an amplitude of about 117 m from oxygenated, warm (18 °C) surface layers to hypoxic (∼0.8 mg O2 l−1) zones with lower temperature (7.9 °C). When such changes in temperature and oxygen concentration are reproduced in the laboratory, total metabolism, basal metabolism and scope of activity of copepods decrease 7.2, 7.8 and 6.7 times, respectively, while the frequency of locomotory acts and mechanical power decline 3.4- and 9.5-fold, respectively. These changes allowed the copepods to conserve a significant portion of food consumed near the surface for transformation to lipid reserves. Diel respiratory oxygen consumption of migrating individuals, calculated so as to include actual duration of residence in layers with different temperature and oxygen concentrations, is estimated at 17.87 μg O2 ind−1. The net energy cost of vertical migration made up only 11.6% of the total. Copepods expend 78.6% of diel energy losses during approximately 10 h in the surface layers, while about 5.4% is required during about 9 h at depth. Hypoxia is shown to have a significant metabolic advantage during diel vertical migrations of C. euxinus in the Black Sea. Received: 1 October 1999 / Accepted: 11 July 2000  相似文献

Caribbean coral reefs are increasingly dominated by macroalgae instead of corals due to several factors, including the decline of herbivores. Yet, virtually unknown is the role of crustacean macrograzers on coral reef macroalgae. We examined the effect of grazing by the Caribbean king crab (Mithrax spinosissimus) on coral patch reef algal communities in the Florida Keys, Florida (USA), by: (1) measuring crab selectivity and consumption of macroalgae, (2) estimating crab density, and (3) comparing the effect of crab herbivory to that of fishes. Mithrax prefers fleshy macroalgae, but it also consumes relatively unpalatable calcareous algae. Per capita grazing rates by Mithrax exceed those of most herbivorous fish, but Mithrax often occurs at low densities on reefs and its foraging activities are reduced in predator-rich environments. Therefore, the effects of grazing by Mithrax tend to be localized and when at low density contribute primarily to spatial heterogeneity in coral reef macroalgal communities.  相似文献
