Laboratory-scale experiments on anaerobic lagoon treatment of tapioca wastewater were conducted under ambient, tropical conditions. The objectives of this study were to investigate factors that affect hydrogen sulfide production and to propose means to control the formation of hydrogen sulfide in lagoon effluents. The concentrations of sulfides were found to increase with increasing organic loading from 2.76 to 5.77 kg COD/m3.d, decreasing hydraulic retention time; and increasing pH from 3 to 7. The maximum total sulfide concentration of 18.8 mg/L occurred at the organic loading of 5.77 kg COD/ m3.d and neutral pH. the maximum H2S concentration was calculated to be 13.3 mg/L which occurred in the laggoon operated at an organic loading of 5.77 kg COD/m3.d and a pH of 5. The control of odour problems due to the H2S formation should be possible by raising pH of the lagoon water to be more than 8 or operating the lagoon at low organic loadings.  相似文献

The study reported and analyzed the current state of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in urban China from the perspective of treatment technologies, pollutant removals, operating load and effluent discharge standards. By the end of 2013, 3508 WWTPs have been built in 31 provinces and cities in China with a total treatment capacity of 1.48 × 108 m3/d. The uneven population distribution between China's east and west regions has resulted in notably different economic development outcomes. The technologies mostly used in WWTPs are AAO and oxidation ditch, which account for over 50% of the existing WWTPs. According to statistics, the efficiencies of COD and NH3–N removal are good in 656 WWTPs in 70 cities. The overall average COD removal is over 88% with few regional differences. The average removal efficiency of NH3–N is up to 80%. Large differences exist between the operating loads applied in different WWTPs. The average operating loading rate is approximately 83%, and 52% of WWTPs operate at loadings of < 80%, treating up to 40% of the wastewater generated. The implementation of discharge standards has been low. Approximately 28% of WWTPs that achieved the Grade I-A Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant (GB 18918–2002) were constructed after 2010. The sludge treatment and recycling rates are only 25%, and approximately 15% of wastewater is inefficiently treated. Approximately 60% of WWTPs have capacities of 1 × 104 m3/d–5 × 104 m3/d. Relatively high energy consumption is required for small-scale processing, and the utilization rate of recycled wastewater is low. The challenges of WWTPs are discussed with the aim of developing rational criteria and appropriate technologies for water recycling. Suggestions regarding potential technical and administrative measures are provided.  相似文献

Behavior and analysis of Cesium adsorption on montmorillonite mineral   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The adsorption of Cs by montmorillonite and the effects of experimental conditions on adsorption were investigated by using 134Cs as a radioactive tracer. Additionally, the Cs-adsorbed and the modified montmorillonite were analyzed by X-ray Diffractometer System (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the adsorption of Cs by montmorillonite was efficient in the initial concentration (C0) of 30 μg/L Cs nitrate solution with 20 g/L montmorillonite at room temperature. In this condition, more than 98% Cs+ ions could be adsorbed at pH 8. The adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 5 min and the relationship between the concentration of Cs+ in aqueous solutions and adsorption capacities of Cs+ can be described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption rate would decrease when temperature increase from 0 °C to 50 °C or in presence of coexistent K+, Na+ and Ca2+, while modification by (NH4)2SO4, [Ag(NH3)2]+, [Cu(NH3)4]2+ or 450 °C could improve the adsorption abilities of montmorillonite for Cs+. However, more than 89% of adsorbed Cs+ on montmorillonite could be desorbed by 2 mol/L HNO3 solutions. The XRD and SEM analysis further showed that the structure of the Cs-adsorbed or modified montmorillonite were different from that of the original one.  相似文献

In this study, occurrence of 66 PPCPs (pharmaceuticals and personal care products) in liquid and solid phases of sewage sludge was elucidated. The extraction methods for the PPCPs from sludge were newly developed employing Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE) and Ultrasonic Solvent Extraction (USE). As an appropriate method, PLE using water (pH2), PLE using methanol (pH4), and USE using mixture of methanol and water (1/9,v/v, pH11) was found most effective because total recovery of most of the PPCPs indicated 40 to 130%. The developed extraction method with previously developed method for liquid phase analysis was applied to field survey at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Japan. 56 compounds were detected from the primary sludge and 61 compounds were detected from the excess sludge. The concentration was ranged between several ng/g and several μg/g. Solid-water distribution coefficient (Log Kd) ranged between 0.9 L/kg (Caffeine) and 3.7 L/kg (Levofloxacin) for primary sludge and between 1.4 L/kg (Sulpirid) and 4.3 L/kg (Mefenamic acid) for excess sludge.  相似文献

An incubation experiment was performed to study the effect of sewage sludge on microbial respiration and nutrient mineralization in a sandy soil as an indication of its effects on soil biological properties and nutrient transformation. Sewage sludge was amended with a sandy soil at 0, 25, 50, 150 and 350 g kg−1 fresh weight. An increase in the sludge amendment rate caused an increase in both pH and electrical conductivity (EC). However, pH decreased while EC increased and then decreased along the incubation time. Nevertheless salinity and heavy metal contents of the soil sludge mixture were all within the safety guidelines. Soluble NH4+, NO32− and PO32− increased after amending the soil with sewage sludge, but increasing the application rate to 350 g kg−1 of sludge decreased the N and P mineralization efficiency and created an adverse effect on nitrification. The daily CO2 evolution pattern was the same in all treatments that CO2 evolution increased initially and then decreased till the end of the incubation period. All the treatments had peak CO2 evolution at day 7, except for the soil amended with 350 g kg−1 of sludge which had peak CO2 evolution at day 2. Similarly, the percentage of C-mineralization decreased with an increase in sludge amendment rate. The present experiment indicated that an application rate of 50–150 g kg−1 sludge for sandy soil would have the optimal beneficial effect on the soil in terms of microbial activity and nutrient transformation.  相似文献

The effect of ozone in a chemical sludge disintegration process was evaluated. Sludge solution chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and settling were investigated in single and sequential processes. A significant influence of ozone dose on sludge disintegration was observed: ozone was utilised to degrade the soluble organic matter and to destroy cell surfaces and release the cell liquids. For a single ozonation step, we found an optimum ozone dose in the range of 0.008–0.013 g O3/g TSS to give the best COD and TSS removal efficiency. Disintegrated sludge was treated in a sequential process consisting of consecutive ozonation and bio-aeration (i.e. O3 + biological treatment). The tendency was dependent on accumulated ozone, treatment time and operational conditions. An accumulated ozone dose of 0.055 g O3/g TSS in two separate ozonation processes followed by biological treatments led to COD and TSS removal efficiency of 53 and 46.6%, respectively. The removal efficiency was improved by increasing aerobic treatment time and/or by mixing ozonated sludge with non-ozonated sludge. The settling ability of sludge was found to be fast at very low specific ozone doses. An observed tendency was the effect of ozone on cell disintegration and protein liberation. The use of sequential processes improved the settling tendency of sludge.  相似文献

This study aims to assess the link between fluoride content in groundwater and its impact on dental health in rural communities of the Ethiopian Rift. A total of 148 water samples were collected from two drainage basins within the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER). In the Ziway–Shala basin in particular, wells had high fluoride levels (mean: 9.4 ± 10.5 mg/L; range: 1.1 to 68 mg/L), with 48 of 50 exceeding the WHO drinking water guideline limit of 1.5 mg/L. Total average daily intake of fluoride from drinking groundwater (calculated per weight unit) was also found to be six times higher than the No-Observed-Adverse-Effects-Level (NOAEL) value of 0.06 mg/kg/day. The highest fluoride levels were found in highly-alkaline (pH of 7 to 8.9) groundwater characterized by high salinity; high concentrations of sodium (Na+), bicarbonate (HCO3), and silica (SiO2); and low concentrations of calcium (Ca2 +). A progressive Ca2 + decrease along the groundwater flow path is associated with an increase of fluoride in the groundwater. The groundwater quality problem is also coupled with the presence of other toxic elements, such as arsenic (As) and uranium (U). The health impact of fluoride was evaluated based on clinical examination of dental fluorosis (DF) among local residents using the Thylstrup and Fejerskov index (TFI). In total, 200 rural inhabitants between the ages of 7 and 40 years old using water from 12 wells of fluoride range of 7.8–18 mg/L were examined. Signs of DF (TF score of ≥ 1) were observed in all individuals. Most of the teeth (52%) recorded TF scores of 5 and 6, followed by TF scores of 3 and 4 (30%), and 8.4% had TF scores of 7 or higher. Sixty percent of the teeth exhibited loss of the outermost enamel. Within the range of fluoride contents, we did not find any correlation between fluoride content and DF. Finally, preliminary data suggest that milk intake has contributed to reducing the severity of DF. The study highlights the apparent positive role of milk on DF, and emphasizes the importance of nutrition in management efforts to mitigate DF in the MER and other parts of the world.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of aerobic biological treatment in removal of nitrogen, phosphorous, and heavy metals from a unique anaerobic liquid waste, produced at a solid waste-to-methane anaerobic digestion facility. Laboratory scale continuous flow activated sludge reactors were employed in this study. The liquid waste has moderate BOD/COD ratio with BOD concentration of 1300 mg/L and high concentration of essential nutrients, making the liquid waste biologically treatable. Results showed that aerobic biological treatment can remove nitrogen and phosphorous on the order of 85%. Metal removal efficiencies vary widely for 11 metals studied in this investigation.  相似文献

A chronic exposure study was initiated to determine the effects of diesel exhaust on the health of experimental animals. For this purpose, test atmospheres of clean air (control) or freshly diluted diesel exhaust at concentrations of 250, 750, and 1500 μg/m3 were supplied to four 12.6 m3 inhalation chambers which housed rats and guinea pigs. Diesel aerosol size and concentration, as well as chamber temperature and relative humidity, were continually monitored and controlled to maintain the exposure dose levels and an environment of 22±2°C and 50%±20% relative humidity. The concentrations of CO and NOx were found to be 5.8±1.0 mg/m3 and 7.9±1.0 mg/m3 above ambient in the chamber containing 1500 μg/m3 of particulate. Animals were supplied from the chambers, on a random basis, for both intramural and extramural studies throughout the exposure period. The experiment ran uninterrupted for over twelve months with mean diesel particle mass concentrations within 2% of the target values.  相似文献

The environmental consequence of meeting the planet’s energy requirements has shown that biological degradation of organic constituent from wastewater does not only produces biogas. It also produces flammable methane that has 21 times more global warming potential or greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide. This becomes a loss of potential renewable energy when it is flared. This study investigates recoverable energy from cassava wastewater and effect of unrecovered onsite (not from treatment plant) wastewater energy. Sludge from both onsite untreated and offsite treated wastewater from a cassava processing station in a sub urban community of Nigeria was analyzed. The result shows that the offsite treatment has a methane potential of 27.428 m3/day compared to the onsite methane emission potential with 17.807 m3/day. The onsite 17.807 m3/day of methane is equivalent to 0.126 kgCH4/year of emitted methane base on industrial procedure standards by the IPCC (2006) guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories. An additional 54.03% of methane will be recovered if the onsite emissions were to be captured . At an emission efficiency of 0.025 kgCH4/kg COD, the untreated wastewater indicates a potential contribution to the greenhouse effect. A mathematical model analysis was presented for ease in determining the amount of methane emitted from the untreated wastewater. This study support suggested methodologies and previous work comparing anaerobic offsite methane potential and untreated wastewater methane emission potentials along with its greenhouse effects.  相似文献

通过藻类增长的生物学评价(Nutrient Enrichment Bioassay)研究淀山湖浮游植物生长限制性因子,并采用析因方差分析和事后比较方法分析营养盐(PO3-4P、NH3N、NO-3N)对浮游植物生长速度、平均最大现存量和平均最大特定增长率的影响。研究表明:磷对浮游植物生长有明显的促进作用,能提高浮游植物的生长速度和现存量,且促进作用随磷浓度(0.13~0.53 mg/L)的增加而加强,磷是淀山湖浮游植物增长的第一限制性因子;低浓度硝氮(2.91~5.91 mg/L)对浮游植物生长有微小的促进作用,但高浓度(5.91~8.91 mg/L)的硝氮表现出抑制作用;氨氮对浮游植物生长有抑制作用,并随浓度(1.25~7.25 mg/L)的增加而增大;添加磷+硝氮能明显促进浮游植物生长,磷与硝氮之间存在一定的交互作用.  相似文献

A new automated version of the piezoelectric microbalance measures the mass concentration of airborne particles smaller than a preselected aerodynamic cutoff diameter. It is designed for near-real-time, unattended, round-the-clock measurements of nearly any aerosol environment inhabited by humans. The instrument uses an electrostatic precipitator to deposit particles with greater than 95% efficiency onto a piezoelectric quartz crystal sensor which is able to detect a deposit of 0.005 μg. The precipitator and sensor are nearly identical to those in the portable instrument reported previously. Measurements comparing within ± 15% with gravimetrically measured filter samples are documented for a wide variety of aerosols in the 50 μg/m3 to 5.5 mg/m3 range. The instrument measures particles from 10 μm down to 0.01 μm in diameter, including submicron combustion smokes and metallic fumes. The piezoelectric microbalance technique senses the mass concentration of the aerosol, rather than light scattering properties as is done by photometers and nephelometers. The piezobalance, with 1 L/min sample flow, is more sensitive than any other mass-sensing instrument, making it especially suited for low concentration indoor measurements, even below 50 μg/m3. An automatic piezobalance recently measured respirable aerosol mass concentrations in several offices. Each measurement was the average concentration during a 30-min period. The 24-h/day measurements continued for several days. Especially interesting is the diurnal pattern, both for offices with and without smokers. The effect of a single nearby smoker was clearly illustrated when the smoker was absent one day in the middle of a week. Normal daytime peak concentrations in that office reached 80–110 μg/m3 with a smoker present, but only 50–60 μg/m3 when the smoker was absent. Curious smokers who briefly stopped byt o see the instrument caused single half-hour averages to triple, to values as high as 294 μg/m3 in one office.  相似文献

Concern over the occurrence of artificial sweeteners (ASWs) as well as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment is growing, due to their high use and potential adverse effects on non-target organisms. The data for this study are drawn from a nationwide survey of ASWs in sewage sludge from 40 representative wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that receive domestic (WWTPD), industrial (WWTPI), or mixed (domestic plus industrial; WWTPM) wastewaters in Korea. Five ASWs (concentrations ranged from 7.08 to 5220 ng/g dry weight [dw]) and ten PPCPs (4.95–6930 ng/g dw) were determined in sludge. Aspartame (concentrations ranged from 28.4 to 5220 ng/g dw) was determined for the first time in sewage sludge. The median concentrations of ASWs and PPCPs in sludge from domestic WWTPs were 0.8–2.5 and 1.0–3.4 times, respectively, the concentrations found in WWTPs that receive combined domestic and industrial wastewaters. Among the five ASWs analyzed, the median environmental emission rates of aspartame through domestic WWTPs (both sludge and effluent discharges combined) were calculated to be 417 μg/capita/day, followed by sucralose (117 μg/capita/day), acesulfame (90 μg/capita/day), and saccharin (66 μg/capita/day). The per-capita emission rates of select PPCPs, such as antimicrobials (triclocarban: 158 μg/capita/day) and analgesics (acetaminophen: 59 μg/capita/day), were an order of magnitude higher than those calculated for antimycotic (miconazole) and anthelmintic (thiabendazole) drugs analyzed in this study. Multiple linear regression analysis of measured concentrations of ASWs and PPCPs in sludge revealed that several WWTP parameters, such as treatment capacity, population-served, sludge production rate, and hydraulic retention time could influence the concentrations found in sludge.  相似文献

在模拟的填埋场封场覆盖层上灌溉处理不同强度的渗滤液稀释液,研究其水量减量和主要污染物COD和NH3-N的去除效果。结果表明:一个生长季内,灌溉水量负荷12 mm/d条件下,裸土覆盖层的水量减量负荷均为7 mm/d左右,狗牙根覆盖层的水量减量负荷为7.7~11 mm/d,渗滤液原液灌溉处理时为7.7 mm/d;而灌溉渗滤液的强度从低到高,狗牙根生物量先增大后减小,狗牙根覆盖层的水量减量负荷与其生物量正相关;裸土覆盖层的COD去除率为65 %左右,NH3-N去除率为70 %~93 %;狗牙根覆盖层的COD去除率为68 %~93 %,NH3-N去除率为89 %~99 %; NH3-N的去除途径主要是转化为硝态氮和被植物吸收。渗滤液覆盖层灌溉处理有良好的水量减量和主要污染物去除效果,且有植被时效果更佳,表明填埋场封场覆盖层灌溉处理渗滤液是可行的。  相似文献

A specific leachate that contained 1.036 mg l(-1) of 2-chlorobiphenyl was used in the study (255 mg l(-1) COD and 133 mg l(-1) BOD5). Bench scale (20 l) air stripping trials were used to simulate on a small-scale the treatment potential of this method. Air stripping effectively reduced the leachates COD concentration. Regardless of the volume of air supplied (1-5 l of air per minute) the leachates COD reached a <50 mg l(-1) equilibrium after 96-h exposure, however, increasing the volume of air accelerated the process. In untreated leachate, the LC50 for Asellus aquaticus was 57% v/v leachate in deionised water and 5% for Gammarus pulex (96-h, static LC50 tests without nutrition and oxygen depleting conditions). After being exposed to air stripping, these values rose from 90% to below the LC50 threshold for Asellus when 1-5 l of air per minute were applied and 30-90% for Gammarus. Furthermore, in sub-lethal concentrations of air stripped leachate (leachate that had been exposed to 5-l of air per minute for 96-h) the population dynamics of both test species remained unaltered.  相似文献

Concern about children's exposure to arsenic (As) from wood treated with chromated-copper-arsenate (CCA) led to its withdrawal from residential use in 2004. However, due to its effectiveness, millions of American homes still have CCA-wood decks on which children play. This study evaluated the effects of three deck-cleaning methods on formation of dislodgeable As and hexavalent chromium (CrVI) on CCA-wood surfaces and in leachate. Initial wipes from CCA-wood wetted with water showed 3–4 times more dislodgeable As than on dry wood. After cleaning with a bleach solution, 9.8–40.3 μg/100 cm2 of CrVI was found on the wood surface, with up to 170 μg/L CrVI in the leachate. Depending on the cleaning method, 699–2473 mg of As would be released into the environment from cleaning a 18.6-m2-deck. Estimated As doses in children aged 1–6 after 1 h of playing on a wet CCA-wood deck were 0.25–0.41 μg/kg. This is the first study to identify increased dislodgeable As on wet CCA-wood and to evaluate dislodgeable CrVI after bleach application. Our data suggest that As and CrVI in 25-year old CCA-wood still show exposure risks for children and potential for soil contamination.  相似文献

Two studies evaluating the levels and sources of nitrogen dioxide in approximately 90 employee homes in the Richmond area with continuous sampling during the weeks of August 5, 1980, and February 9, 1981, were performed using samplers in the living room, bedroom, kitchen, and outdoors. Additional data were collected concerning appliance usage, heating/cooling plant, ventilation and cigarette smoking. Results were analyzed using BMDP routines. The largest contributor to NO2 concentration was found to be gas-fired kitchen appliances. The mean kitchen level for homes with gas appliances during the winter study was 188 μg/m3. Excluding participants with gas kitchens, incremental influence due to cigarette smoking was detected. The 7-day, 3-room average level of NO2 in the homes of nonsmokers and smokers without gas-fired appliances was 12 and 15 μg/m3, respectively, in the summer. The corresponding winter values were 19 and 22 μg/m3. Furthermore, the individual levels of NO2 in the homes of smokers were generally below both the adjacent outdoor level and the National Ambient Air Quality Standard limit for annual exposure.  相似文献

The present field study addressed the need for a procedure that provides a defined unit of measurement of perceived annoyance from environmental odors, calibrating the estimates for individual scaling behavior and context effects. In including 25 subjects, the purpose was to demonstrate the applicability of the master-scale procedure with magnitude estimation to perform such a calibration of odor-annoyance estimates for target stimuli such as road-traffic combustion exhausts (13 000 vehicles/d; averaging 47 μg/m3 over the day/night with peaks exceeding 100 μg/m3 of nitrogen dioxide; NO2). For comparison, calibrated estimates were also obtained for a backyard expected to be considerably less polluted (comparable with 18 μg/m3 of NO2) and for blank stimuli presented indoors. The data transformation for the calibration procedure with which annoyance is expressed in either master-scale units or pyridine equivalents requires estimates of a reference stimulus for which seven concentrations of pyridine were used. The results provide an illustration of master scaling of odor annoyance, and imply that use of a modulus (standard stimulus with a predefined annoyance magnitude), in contrast to master scaling, is not sufficient for calibration for individual scaling behavior and context effects.  相似文献

The concentrations of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) constituents including benzene were measured in the living rooms of 10 nonsmoking households and 20 households with at least one smoker situated in the city and suburbs of Munich. In the city, the median benzene levels during the evening, when all household members were at home, were 8.1 and 10.4 μg/m3 in nonsmoking and smoking homes, respectively. The corresponding levels of 3.5 and 4.6 μg/m3 were considerably lower in the suburbs. Median time-integrated 1-week benzene concentrations in the city were 10.6 μg/m3 in nonsmoking homes and 13.1 μg/m3 in smoking homes. In the suburbs, the corresponding values were 3.2 and 5.6 μg/m3. While the benzene concentrations in nonsmoking homes located in the city were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in suburban nonsmoking households, no difference was found between smoking and nonsmoking households located either in the city or in the suburbs. Individual exposures to benzene and to specific markers for tobacco smoke of all household members (82 nonsmokers and 32 smokers) were determined by questionnaire, personal monitoring, and biomonitoring. Within the city, the benzene exposure determined by personal samplers was 11.8 μg/m3 for nonsmokers living in nonsmoking homes and 13.3 μg/m3 for nonsmokers in smoking homes. The corresponding values for nonsmokers living in the suburbs were 5.9 and 6.9 μg/m3, respectively. Neither difference was statistically significant. Nonsmokers living in nonsmoking households in the city had significantly higher exposure to benzene compared to their counterparts living in the suburbs (personal samplers: 11.8 vs 5.9 μg/m3, p < 0.001; benzene in exhalate: 2.4 vs. 1.1 μg/m3, p < 0.05; trans,trans-muconic acid excretion in urine: 92 vs. 54 μg/g creatinine, p < 0.05). Nonsmokers from all households with smokers were significantly more exposed to benzene than nonsmokers living in the nonsmoking households (personal samplers: 13.2 vs. 7.0 μg/m3, p < 0.05; benzene in exhalate: 2.6 vs. 1.8 μg/m3, p < 0.01; trans,trans-muconic acid excretion in urine: 73 vs. 62 μg/g creatinine), but the contribution of ETS to the total benzene exposure was relatively low compared to that from other sources. Analysis of variance showed that at most 15% of the benzene exposure of nonsmokers living in smoking homes was attributable to ETS. For nonsmokers living in nonsmoking households benzene exposure from ETS was insignificant.  相似文献

The dairy industry is among the most polluting industries as it produces large volume of wastewater that may adversely affect the environment if discharged untreated. Dairy wastewater is characterized by high COD, BOD and nutrient levels. In this study, water treatment sludge was used as a coagulant for the treatment of synthetic dairy wastewater in the pH range of 4–10. Turbidity, COD, BOD, TSS and TDS removals from the synthetic dairy wastewater were found to be around 93, 65, 67, 84 and 85%, respectively, at the optimum conditions. Water treatment sludge was found to perform even better than other conventional coagulants used for the same. Results showed that it has the potential to substitute the conventional coagulants partially or fully in the primary treatment of dairy wastewater.
