The MULTIFAN method of Fournier et al. was used to analyse a series of monthly length-frequency distributions of deep-water royal red prawns (Haliporoides sibogae de Man, 1907, Solenoceridae) for the estimation of growth, mortality and yield-per-recruit. Length data were collected from commercial catches made between Latitude 33° and 35°S from November 1988 to May 1990. MULTIFAN distinguished six cohorts in the royal red prawn population, aged at 6 mo intervals from about 1.5 to 4 yr. Most prawns were between 2 and 3 yr of age. Females and males were fully recruited at 23.1 and 21.5 mm carapace length (CL) respectively, when about 2 yr old. Females grew faster and reached larger sizes at age than males (growth coefficient, K=0.37 yr-1 and asymptotic length, L =48.3 mm CL for females, and K=0.49 yr-1 and L =33.5 mm CL for males). Total mortality (Z) was estimated at 1.6 and 1.2 yr-1 for females and males, respectively. Approximate values for natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.6 to 0.7 yr-1 for females, and from 0.4 to 0.8 yr-1 for males. Analysis of yield-per-recruit suggested that while the current yield could possibly be increased by decreasing the length at first capture (L c ), there seems to be little potential for an increase in yield from increased fishing effort in the area currently fished.  相似文献

The “Tsesis” oil spill in October 1977 resulted in the release of over 1 000 tons of medium grade fuel oil in an archipelago in the brackish Baltic Sea. Considerable oil quantities reached the benthos by sedimentation. Within 16 d benthic amphipods of the genus Pontoporeia, as well as the polychaete Harmothoe sarsi Kinberg, showed reduction to less than 5% of pre-spill biomasses at the most impacted station. The clam Macoma balthica (L.) was more resistant, and showed little or no mortality, but was heavily contaminated by oil (about 2 000 μg g-1 dry wt total hydrocarbons). The meiofauna was strongly affected, with ostracods, harpacticoids, Turbellaria and kinorhynchs showing clear reductions in abundance, while nematodes, as a group, were more resistant. In the winter following the spill gravid Pontoporeia affinis Lindström females showed a statistically significant increase in the frequency of abnormal or undifferentiated eggs. Food-chain transfer of oil to flounder [Platichthys flesus (L.)] was indicated. Not until the second summer after the spill were the first signs of recovery noted at the most heavily impacted station: Amphipods, H. sarsi and harpacticoids increased and the oil concentrations in M. balthica decreased (to about 1 000 μg g-1). In the area where amphipods had been virtually eliminated, there was an unusually heavy recruitment of M. balthica, reaching 4 000 juveniles, of 1.5–2 mm length, per square metre, probably from settling in summer 1978. Three years after the spill Pontoporeia spp. biomass was still depressed in the most affected area, while H. sarsi showed normal biomass, and M. balthica abundance was inflated. Oil concentrations in M. balthica (about 250 μg g-1) and flounder were only slightly elevated and the oil could no longer be confidently ascribed to “Tsesis” origin, even using GC/MS-analysis. Recovery was thus underway, but the long lifespan of M. balthica implies that the disturbed community composition may persist for many years at this station. Full recovery is likely to require more than 5 yr and may take a decade or more. An effort to evaluate the accumulated monetary loss to fishery from the accident indicates that direct costs of shoreline cleanup and vessel damage were considerably greater.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in abundance, size and aspects of the population structure of Meganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars) and Nyctiphanes couchi (Bell) are described from samples taken with the Continuous Plankton Recorder at 10 m depth over a 2 yr period (1966 and 1967) in the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. M. norvegica lived for a maximum of just over 2 yr, and adults of both year-classes spawned during a limited breeding season in the spring or summer. N. couchi spawned over a prolonged breeding season, giving rise to a complex of cohorts with overlapping size ranges. It was concluded that 3 or 4 cohorts were spawned in each year and that the maximum life span was probably greater than 1 yr, although maturity may be attained in less than a year. Estimated annual production at 10 m depth for M. norvegica ranged from 0.80 to 18.74 mg m-3yr-1 and for N. couchi from 0.67 to 8.23 mg m-3yr-1. P:B ratios ranged from 1.3:1 to 6.3:1 for M. norvegica and 4.0:1 to 5.5:1 for N. couchi.  相似文献

The red mullet Mullus surmuletus is one of the main target species of the trawling fishery along the continental shelf off the Island of Majorca. The size distribution of the catches, and the reproduction, age and growth of this species have been studied based on sampling carried out from 1990 to 1992. The length range of the catches was between 10 and 32 cm, with a main distribution between 15 and 20 cm, but this included small specimens (recruits of 10 to 11 cm) from August. In the >19 cm length-class, females clearly dominated. Monthly variations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and in the percentage of mature specimens showed that males spawn from December to June, whereas the reproductive activity of the females centres around spring. Fifty percent of males and females mature at 15 and 16.8 cm, respectively, corresponding to 1 yr of age. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the trawl fishery consists of six age-groups, including a very high proportion of individuals between 0 and 4 yr old. Population growth curves revealed that females grow comparatively slowly over a longer period of time and attain greater asymptotic sizes than males. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L =31.28 cm; growth coefficient, K=0.211 yr-1; theoretical age when length is zero, t 0=-2.348 yr.  相似文献

A life table was constructed for Mya arenaria from Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA, based on schedules of age-specific fecundity and mortality determined under natural conditions. Mortality rates decrease with size and age in this species, with the period of maximum mortality occurring during the summer months. Mortality rates during the fall and winter were considerably lower, perhaps due to the inactivity of natural predators. The survivorship curve for M. arenaria approximates the Type 3 curve of Deevey (1947). Mean life expectancy is low in recently-settled clams, peaks when the individual reaches 30.0 to 34.9 mm (1 year of age) and remains fairly high for most of the remainder of life. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r max) is very high: 4.74. This enormous rate of potential increase is offset by high rates of larval mortality in the plankton. Unlike the reproductive values of most animals studied, those in M. arenaria peak late in life, well after the know age of first reproduction. This is probably the result of increased fecundity with age. The implications of this work in the area of resource management are discussed.  相似文献

Benthic filter feeding macrofauna organisms may be an important factor linking sediment and water column. Transport of water and concomitantly of suspended matter is directly related to the size of the benthic filter feeding population. This paper aims to determine the potential for water transport by the bivalve Mya arenaria along a coastal stretch of roughly 100 km length in the southern Baltic Sea. Quantification of population filtration rates specific to the area is based on distribution, abundance and biomass of M. arenaria and calculated according to previously published filtration rate–biomass relations. Calculated rates range up to >8 m3 m–2 day–1 (at 5–20 m water depth in sandy sediment) with the potential to locally process a volume of water equivalent to the water column within <1 day. Data from 1991–2002 at one site suggest that the area-specific potential population filtration rate remains remarkably constant in time despite changes in population structure of M. arenaria. The related impact on pore water exchange within the permeable sediment associated with the leakage of water from the gape of M. arenaria valves is discussed.Communicated by L. Two mark-recapture studies, regular population censuses, field observations, and laboratory culture were used to study the life history of the tropical marine gastropod Cypraea annulus Linnaeus, 1758 from Cape Maeda, Okinawa Island, from April 1984 to March 1986. In the field, the average rate of increase in shell length of marked juvenile snails was 1.0±0.3 mm wk-1 (N=13), with a maximum of 1.5 mm wk-1 (initial shell length 10.6 to 17.2 mm). In the laboratory, the maximum growth rate of juveniles was 3.0 mm wk-1 with food ad libitum. Snails with primordial teeth on the shells grew at a rate of 0.1 to 0.5 mm wk-1 for about 2 wk. The adults continued to grow at a similar rate for an additional 3 to 6 wk, and ceased detectable growth when some females started spawning egg masses. In the littoral zone on Okinawa Island, snails reproduced throughout the year. Egg masses brooded by three females (shell length 17.4 to 21.3 mm) in the field contained 90 000 to 133 000 ova. In the laboratory, brooding periods of three females lasted 6,8, and 9 d. The estimated average frequency of spawning was 5 egg masses female-1 yr-1. The mean shell length of adult females (20.3 mm) was significantly larger than that of adult males (19.6 mm). The life-history strategy of C. annulus is characterized by rapid growth, high fecundity, and repeated spawning throughout the year.  相似文献

Red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, were tagged with tetracycline in 1990 at subtidal sites off San Nicolas Island, California, USA. After one year in the field, the sea urchins were collected and growth increments were measured based on tetracycline marks, which indicated initial slow growth, a maximum rate, and finally a prolonged period of very slow growth. Small red sea urchins (4 cm diam) were estimated to be 3 to 4 yr old, which is much older than has previously been reported. It is estimated that about 12 yr would be required to attain 10 cm diam. Survival has previously been modeled assuming a constant rate. If the population of red sea urchins is assumed to be stable and stationary, annual survival rate was between 71 and 77% yr-1. Census data for the two years of study have permitted annual survival to be estimated without assuming stable and stationary population structure. Under these conditions, annual survival rate was between 79 and 86% yr-1. Analysis of transitions in the size distributions from 1990 to 1991 suggested that annual survival may have been sizespecific: 91% yr-1 for individuals 1.1 to 4.0 cm diam, 82% yr-1 for individuals 4.1 to 7.0 cm diam, and 63% yr-1 for those of 7.1 to 10.0 cm diam. An alternative explanation to size-specific survival in our study is sizespecific immigration.  相似文献

We analysed growth of the Antarctic bryozoan Melicerita obliqua (Thornely, 1924) by x-ray photography and stable isotope analysis. M. obliqua colonies form one segment per year, thus attaining maximum length of about 200 mm within 50 years. In the Weddell and Lazarev Seas, annual production/biomass ratio of M. obliqua is 0.1 yr−1, which is in the range of other Antarctic benthic invertebrate populations. Production amounts to 3.34 mg Corg m−2 yr−1 and 90.6 mg ash m−2 yr−1 on the shelf (100 to 600 m water depth), and to 0.13 mg Corg m−2 yr−1 and 36.8 mg ash m−2 yr−1 on the slope (600 to 1250 m water depth). The transparent goby Aphia minuta (Risso, 1810) is one of the main target species of the small-scale fishery off the Island of Majorca. Otolith microstructure and length-frequency analysis were used to study the age and growth of this species during the 1982/1983 and 1992/1993 fishing seasons. Daily periodicity of increment formation was determined by experiments with marked otoliths in individuals maintained in captivity. The length range of the catches during the 11 yr period was between 12 and 49 mm, with a main distribution (89%) between 24 and 40 mm. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the commercial fishery consists of seven age-groups (2 to 8 mo old), with a very high proportion of individuals (95%) between 3 and 6 mo old. Population growth-curves revealed no differences between males and females. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L = 53.69 mm; growth coefficient, K = 2.23 yr−1; theoretical age at length zero, t 0 = −0.005 yr. Those individuals of A. minuta caught in Majorca during the winter period reached a maximum age of 7 or 8 mo. Received: 30 December 1996 / Accepted: 16 April 1997  相似文献

When exposed to Prudhoe Bay crude oil in flowing seawater for 180 days, the small intertidal clam Macoma balthica showed behavioral, physical, physiological and biochemical changes. At a high concentration of oil in seawater (3.0 mg l-1) burrowing rate decreased, respiration rate increased, growth was inhibited, and very high mortalities resulted. The lowest concentration of oil in seawater (0.03 mg l-1) inhibited growth and caused reabsorption of gametes. One group of adverse oil effects which was related to sluggishness and disorientation of the clams appeared after a week of exposure to oil; another group related to a negative energy balance was not observed until 60 days. We conclude that chronic exposure of M. balthica to oil-in-seawater concentrations even as low as 0.03 mg l-1 will, in time, lead to population decreases. Please address requests for reprints to Dr. D. Patterns of nine intracellular free amino acids (FAA), which are utilized as organic osmolytes for salinity-induced cell volume regulation in marine osmoconformers, were compared in five Macoma balthica populations and seven Mytilus spp. populations along their European distribution. Three types of FAA patterns were classified within both taxa: a northern Baltic type, a southern Baltic type and an Atlantic/Mediterranean type which mainly differ regarding the share of alanine and taurine. Differences are discussed in relation to habitat salinity and population genetics. Along a salinity gradient, the total size of the intracellular FAA pool did not differ between sympatric M. balthica and Mytilus spp., and was significantly correlated with habitat osmolality in a range from 70 to 600 mmol kg−1 H2O (oligohaline to mesohaline) in both bivalves. In M. balthica, this correlation was mainly based on significant correlations of alanine (15–100 mmol kg−1 DW), glycine (30–100 mmol kg−1 DW) and taurine (0–70 mmol kg−1 DW) with habitat osmolality. In Mytilus spp., only glycine (25–100 mmol kg−1 DW) and taurine (4–180 mmol kg−1 DW) were significantly correlated with habitat osmolality. The concentration of alanine was three times lower in Mytilus spp. than in M. balthica and did not correlate with habitat osmolality. Within a habitat osmolality range from 600 to 1,100 mmol kg−1 H2O (mesohaline to marine) the concentration of FAA remained constant in both taxa. It is suggested that under marine conditions additional organic osmolytes must become more important for cell volume regulation in Macoma and Mytilus.  相似文献

The amount of copper taken up via algae and water byMacoma balthica from the Oosterschelde sea arm, S.W. Netherlands, was established using the radioisotope64Cu. As far as we know, this isotope has never been used before in marine flod chain studies. As a model food source the marine diatomPhaeodactylum tricornutum was allowed to accumulate64Cu for 1 d. These labelled algae were fed to the clams in the presence of the complexing agent EDTA (0.27mM). EDTA was added to prevent uptake of dissolved64Cu that could be leaking from the labelled diatoms. In control experiments, unlabelled diatoms were fed toM. balthica in the presence of dissolved64Cu (with and without EDTA) in order to assure a similar filtration activity. In repeated experiments with varying particulate/dissolved copper ratios, uptake through food always turned out to be at least as efficient as uptake from the water. It was concluded that Cu, associated with food, is well available for uptake byM. balthica.  相似文献

The role of multi-species benthic diatom films (BDF) in the settlement of late pediveliger larvae of the bivalve Macoma balthica was investigated in still-water bioassays and multiple choice flume experiments. Axenic diatom cultures that were isolated from a tidal mudflat inhabited by M. balthica were selected to develop BDF sediment treatments characterized by a different community structure, biomass, and amount of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Control sediments had no added diatoms. Although all larvae settled and initiated burrowing within the first minute after their addition in still water, regardless of treatment, only 48–52% had completely penetrated the high diatom biomass treatments after 5 min, while on average 80 and 69% of the larvae had settled and burrowed into the control sediments and BDF with a low diatom biomass (<3.5 μg Chl a g−1 dry sediment), respectively. The percentage of larvae settling and burrowing into the sediment was negatively correlated with the concentration of Chl a and EPS of the BDF. This suggests higher physical resistance to bivalve penetration by the BDF with higher diatom biomass and more associated sugar and protein compounds. The larval settlement rate in annular flume experiments at flow velocities of 5 and 15 cm s−1 was distinctly lower compared to the still-water assays. Only 4.6–5.8% of the larvae were recovered from BDF and control sediments after 3 h. Nonetheless, a clear settlement preference was observed for BDF in the flume experiments; i.e., larvae settled significantly more in BDF compared to control sediments irrespective of flow speed. Comparison with the settlement of polystyrene mimics and freeze-killed larvae led to the conclusion that active selection, active secondary dispersal and, at low flow velocities (5 cm s−1), passive adhesion to the sediment are important mechanisms determining the settlement of M. balthica larvae in estuarine biofilms.  相似文献

Two species of marine bivalve, Cerastoderma edule (Linnaeus) and Macoma balthica (Linnaeus), were exposed to particles contaminated with three commercial polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixtures, Aroclors® 1242, 1254 and 1260. The accumulation of PCB in bivalve tissue was monitored for periods of up to 40 days. In addition to measuring total PCB concentrations, which reached 60 ppm of Aroclor 1242 in M. balthica, the fate of individual PCB homologues of different chlorine content, ranging from 2 to 8 chlorine atoms per biphenyl molecule, was also determined. Selective accumulation of PCBs with 5 chlorine atoms per biphenyl molecule occurred, whilst isomers of very low and very high molecular weights were accumulated at much slower rates.  相似文献

Growth rates in the infaunal nuculanid bivalve mollusc Yoldia eightsi (Couthouy) were assessed for field populations in Factory Cove, Signy Island, Antarctica, between. February and April 1992. Daily increments in length (maximum shell dimension) ranged from 2.3 m d-1 for a 30 mm individual to 5.1 m d-1 for a 10 mm specimen. These growth rates were converted to annual increments, based on a growing season for the Signy population of around 5 mo, and ages for the largest individuals in the population (35 mm in length), were calculated to be 65 yr. Specimens of 43 mm in length have been found near this site and, if their growth rates are similar to this population, their ages would be in the order of 120 yr. Size distributions from two sites in the same Y. eightsi bed 300 m apart showed significant differences. At the more exposed site the distribution was dominated by small juveniles, with 86% of the population 10 mm in length, while 13% were >20 mm in length. At the less exposed site the values were 27% <10 mm and 56% >20 mm. Icebergs have often been seen grounded on the Y. eightsi bed in this study, especially on the exposed outer portion. This factor, in association with inhibition of larval settlement by high densities of large individuals, is proposed as an explanation of the observed population distributions and the absence of very large specimens in the Factory Cove population.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance, distribution, maturity, growth and population dynamics of the euphausiidsThysanoessa raschi (M. Sars, 1864),T. inermis (Krøyer, 1846) andMeganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars, 1857) were studied in Ísafjord-deep, a fjord in northwest Iceland, from February 1987 to February 1988. Sampling was made at nine stations along the length of the fjord at approximately monthly intervals, along with hydrographic measurements and water sampling for nutrient analysis and measurements of chlorophylla concentrations. Spring warming of the water began in late May and maximum temperatures (8° to 10°C) were observed in late July–September. The phytoplankton spring-bloom started in early April, and the highest chlorophylla levels were measured in early May (7.0 mg m–3). A small increase was observed in the chlorophylla content in August. The greatest abundance of juveniles and males and females of all three species was observed during January and February 1988, during which period the euphausiids were concentrated in the middle and inner parts of the fjord. Euphausiid eggs were first recorded in the plankton in mid-May, and the greatest abundance ofThysanoessa spp. larvae occurred at the end of May. Larvae ofM. norvegica were not observed in Ísafjord-deep, indicating that recruitment of this species was occurring from outside the fjord.T. raschi andT. inermis had a life span of just over 2 yr; the life span ofM. norvegica was more difficult to determine. Almost all femaleT. raschi were mature at the age of 1 yr, while mostT. inermis females appeared not to mature until 2 yr of age. Most males of both species took part in breeding at 1 yr of age. The maximum carapace length ofT. raschi andT. inermis was 8 to 9 and 9 to 10 mm, respectively. The largestM. norvegica had a carapace length of 9 to 10 mm. The spawning of the euphausiids in Ísafjord-deep appeared to be closely related to the phytoplankton spring bloom; water temperature appeared to have no influence on spawning.  相似文献

Influence of predation on infaunal abundance in Upper Chesapeake Bay,USA   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The importance of predators in controlling the densities of infaunal (>0.5 mm) organisms was investigated in the mesohaline region of the Upper Chesapeake Bay (USA) using field experiments. The role of predators in controlling infaunal density and community characteristics varied with habitat type, season (i.e., predator abundance) and developmental or successional stage of the community. Few infaunal species were adversely affected by predator exclusion. Species that increased greatly in abundance in the absence of predators (e.g. Eteone heteropoda, Streblospio benedicti, Nereis succinea, and juvenile Macoma balthica and Mya arenaria) lived near the sediment-water interface and had major population pulses from fall through spring. Species whose abundances increased moderately or were not affected by predator exclusion were deeper burrowing organisms (e.g. Heteromastus filiformis and adult Mya arenaria), or were relatively small organisms (e.g. Paraprionospio pinnata, Scolecolepides viridis and Peloscolex gabriellae) whose principal predators could be other members of the infauna. Competition did not appear to be an important factor controlling infaunal density in these experiments. This work is Contribution No. 973 of the Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies of the University of Maryland  相似文献

This study was designed to assess the contribution of moulting and eggs to production of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes australis G. O. Sars. For this purpose, live specimens were collected from Storm Bay, south-eastern Tasmania, between August and December 1981, while preserved samples, collected between February 1980 and February 1981, were also examined. The intermoult period of N. australis increased exponentially with increase in body length and weight. Larvae moulted approximately every 2.5 to 3 d and adults every 4 to 5 d at 15°C. A decrease in temperature from 15° to 10°C resulted in the intermoult period almost doubling. The mean weight of exuviae produced represented nearly 6% of the body dry weight of the individual. Continuous maturation of ova was observed, with an individual female capable of releasing a total of 1 100 eggs in a lifetime. These are deposited as a series of batches into a pair of external ovisacs every 30 d. The size of the batch of eggs was dependent on the size of the female. Moulting of euphausiids forms a significant contribution of organic matter to detrital food webs. A value of 42.01 mg m-3 yr-1 was obtained for the production of exuviae. Egg production was calculated to be between 1.41 and 4.22 mg m-3 yr-1. Production and mean annual biomass of N. australis was previously calculated as 78.29 mg m-3 yr-1 and 5.39 mg m-3, respectively. Thus, the total production integrated for the whole of Storm Bay was 125 mg m-3 yr-1 or 2 309 tonnes dry wt yr-1, representing an overall P:B ratio of 23.1.  相似文献

Primary production of the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile was measured by lepidochronological analyses at 22 sites in the Mediterranean Sea (Corsica, France, Italy, Sardinia and Turkey), between 1983 and 1992, to determine spatial and temporal variations. Leaf production (blade and sheath) ranged from 310 to 1 540 mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1, depending on site and depth. Rhizome production ranged from 24 to 120 mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1 (6% of average leaf production). At some sites the results obtained by lepidochronological analysis were consistent with earlier results obtained by classic methods (e.g. leaf-marking). While primary production per shoot (mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1) displayed no significant differences between sites, primary production of the P. oceanica meadow (g dry wt m–2 yr–1) decreased with increasing depth at all sites studied. This decrease correlated with reduced density of the meadow (number of shoots per m2) with increasing depth. Past primary production was also extrapolated at three sites at the island of Ischia (Italy) for a period of 5 yr in order to determine interannual variations over a period of several years. While major variations were recorded for the surface stations (5 and 10 m depth), production remained stable at the deepest station (20 m depth). Given the large geographical scale of the study (location, depth range), it would appear that while P. oceanica production remains considerable, the values recorded in the literature on the basis of classical analyses (surface stations) represent maxima, and cannot be generalised for meadows as a whole.  相似文献
