Concentrations of Na, K, Cl, Ca and Mg were measured in the spermatophoric plasma and certain other body fluids of Octopus dofleini martini. The most striking change associated with maturation and passage of the spermatophore in the male reproductive tract, was a decline in the concentration of NaCl in the spermatophoric plasma. This was completely reversed during the spermatophoric reaction owing to influx of salt from the seawater. The outer tunic of a spermatophore undergoing spermatophoric reaction is also permeable to other substances. It allows an influx of inorganic phosphate and glucose, and an efflux of organically bound nitrogen, carbohydrate and aminosugar.  相似文献

The introduction of chronic, infectious diseases by colonizing populations (invasive or reintroduced) is a serious hazard in conservation biology, threatening the original host and other spillover species. Most research on spatial invasion of diseases has pertained to established host populations, either at steady state or fluctuating through time. Within a colonizing population, however, the spread of disease may be influenced by the expansion process of the population itself. Here we explore the simultaneous expansion of a colonizing population and a chronic, nonlethal disease introduced with it, describing basic patterns in homogeneous and structured landscapes and discussing implications for disease management. We describe expected outcomes of such introductions for three qualitatively distinct cases, depending on the relative velocities at which the population and epidemic expand. (1) If transmissibility is low the disease cannot be sustained, although it may first expand its range somewhat around the point of introduction. (2) If transmissibility is moderate but the wave-front velocity for the population, vp, is higher than that for the disease, vd, the disease wave front lags behind that of the population. (3) A highly transmissible disease, with vd > vp, will invade sufficiently rapidly to track the spread of the host. To test these elementary theoretical predictions, we simulated disease outbreaks in a spatially structured host population occupying a real landscape. We used a spatially explicit, individual-based model of Persian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica) reintroduced in northern Israel, considering a hypothetical introduction of bovine tuberculosis. Basic patterns of disease expansion in this realistic setting were similar to our conceptual predictions for homogeneous landscapes. Landscape heterogeneity, however, induced the establishment of population activity centers and disease foci within them, leading to jagged wave fronts and causing local variation in the relative velocities at which the population and epidemic expanded. Based on predictions from simple theory and simulations of managed outbreaks, we suggest that the relative velocities at which the population and epidemic expand have important implications for the impact of different management strategies. Recognizing which of our three general cases best describes a particular outbreak will aid in planning an efficient strategy to contain the disease.  相似文献

The survival of free-living nitrogen-fixing microbial populations in the natural ecosystem is crucial for the system maintenance and productivity due to the unique role of these organisms in the global biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen. The dynamics of a nitrogen-fixing microbial population grown at various conditions in a chemostat, together with a competitive (for the common resources) population, was studied through bifurcation analysis of a mathematical model of the system. When the carbon source is found in abundance in the feed, then the competition for this nutrient is low. High amounts of ammonium nitrogen (a substance that inhibits growth of the nitrogen-fixing population) are assimilated for the growth needs of both populations. Under these conditions the nitrogen-fixing population can survive (alone or together with its competitor) in a wide range of parameter values and operating conditions and in some cases nitrogenase synthesis occurs. When the inflow medium contains low carbon substrate concentrations, high competition occurs for this nutrient. In these conditions the nitrogen-fixing population can survive only if it has the competitive advantage over its competitor. However, if the inflow medium contains high ammonium concentrations, the nitrogen-fixing population is inhibited and loses its competitive advantage. Under these conditions, only nitrogen-fixing populations, which are able to establish amensalistic interactions can survive in the system.  相似文献

Female Octopus vulgaris Cuvier mated in the laboratory in every month tested. Females maintained in isolation after capture and not mated in the laboratory laid eggs, fertile and infertile, each month of the year. The longest period of sperm viability was 104 days. Young specimens weighing between 4.0 and 66.0 g were found regularly. It is concluded that O. vulgaris breeds throughout the year, at least in Bahamian waters.  相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic analyses of shallow-water Caribbean octocorals   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Octocorals, especially gorgonians, are conspicuous on Caribbean coral reefs, but there is no consensus regarding species relationships. Mitochondrial protein-coding genes [NADH-dehydrogenase subunits 2 (ND2) and 6 (ND6), and mutS homolog (msh1), 1633 bp] from 28 shallow-water species were sequenced to develop the first molecular phylogeny for Caribbean octocorals. The specimens were collected primarily in the Caribbean or off Brazil in 1999-2001. Morphological characters (sclerites and axial ultrastructure) were also examined in order to map them onto the molecular phylogeny. Analyses of both nucleotide and amino acid substitutions using maximum parsimony and likelihood (including maximum-likelihood and Bayesian analysis) generated very similar results, with most nodes having high levels of support. These molecular results were significantly different from the generally accepted classification. Neither Plexauridae nor Gorgoniidae were monophyletic. Plexaurella spp., nominal plexaurids, were basal to the gorgoniids, sharing many morphological characters with them. This corroborates previous findings using secondary metabolites and biosynthetic pathways. The sea fans, Gorgonia spp. and Pacifigorgia spp., as well as the pinnate gorgonians, Muriceopsis flavida and Pseudopterogorgia spp., did not have sea fan or pinnate relatives, suggesting there has been convergent evolution of colony form. Caribbean plexaurids appeared more derived and/or recently evolved according to both morphological and molecular data (e.g. Eunicea spp. and Plexaura spp.). Molecular phylogenetics is a promising approach for reconstructing phylogenetic relationships among octocorals as well as to understand their complex morphology. Maximal rates of oxygen consumption in vitro have been measured under standardized conditions at three test temperatures (5°, 15°, and 25°C) on minced preparations of white muscle from 39 species of shallow-water marine teleost fishes. These fishes came from four different geographic areas, two with cool average water-temperatures (near 15°C: coastal southern California, Galápagos Islands) and two with warm average water-temperatures (near 25°C: Hawaiian Islands; Bermuda). The group includes species covering much of the range of variation to be found among the teleosts with respect to five additional variables: phylogenetic position, type of environment, body weight, activity level, and growth stage. The purpose of the work is to provide part of a base line of tissue-metabolism data on shallow-water fishes for comparison with similar results from deep-sea species. Major conclusions from statistical analyses of the results are: four groups of shapes of oxygen-uptake rate versus temperature curves exist: normal, flat, dipped and peaked. Over 50% of curves are normal. Intra-group differences, contributing significantly to the total variance of the results at given test temperatures, are: cool versus warm average environmental temperatures primarily for epipelagic species; epipelagic versus non-epipelagic environments; very active species versus all others; juvenile stages versus adults. In each case, the subgroup first mentioned shows higher muscle oxygen-uptake rates than the other subgroup. Variables not contributing significantly to the total variance are phylogenetic position and body weight. Physiological and ecological implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Maximal rates of oxygen consumption in vitro have been measured under standardized conditions at three test temperatures (5°, 15°, 25°C) on minced preparations of red muscle from 10 species of shallow-water marine teleost fishes. These fishes came from three different geographic areas, two with cool average water temperatures (near 15°C: coastal southern California, Galápagos Islands) and one with warm average water temperatures (near 25°C: Hawaiian Islands). The group is made up of post-juvenile or adult epipelagic fishes, which are moderately or very active in terms of their locomotor activities. A large part of the range of phylogenetic diversity among the teleosts is represented, as is the body weight range from a few grams to several kilograms. The purpose of the work is to provide part of a set of tissue-metabolism data on shallow-water fishes for future comparison with similar results from deep-sea species. Of 8 complete curves for oxygen uptake rate versus temperature (R-T curves), 6 are normal in shape (Q101.5), 1 is normal but with a low Q10, and 1 is partly flat, partly normal. The differences between the species in terms of both absolute positions and slopes of the R-T curves are not related in any consistent way to any of the three testable variables: phylogenetic position, long-term adaptation temperature, and body size. The red muscles of a variety of adult epipelagic fishes, at ecologically realistic temperatures, are shown to be exceptions to the general rule that tissues of ectothermous lower vertebrates have lower metabolic rates than comparable tissues of non-torpid endothermous higher vertebrates. This circumstance probably is a major factor in the great capacities for sustained high-speed swimming shown by most epipelagic fishes. Other physiological and ecological implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

In November 1973 the benthic macrofauna of two shallow-water areas in the lower Sheepscot River estuary (New England, USA) was quantitatively sampled. Numerical classification of the data, in both the normal and inverse modes, produced 4 site-groups and 7 species-groups. Each site-group was characterized by at least one of the species-groups. The fauna of the site-groups differed in several community parameters, particularly the patterns of dominance, but it was not possible to correlate these differences with any of the several extrinsic factors measured. A factor, or factors, related to water-column stability is the probable overriding ecological determinant of the observed community patterns. Comparisons with an earlier investigation in 1955 demonstrate dramatic changes in density, dominance and species composition.Contribution No. 78033 of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.  相似文献

Sulfide tolerance and detoxification in shallow-water marine fishes   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Hydrogen sulfide is a potent inhibitor of aerobic respiration. Sulfide is produced in sediments, and many species of fish live in association with the bottom. Tolerance tests, enzyme assays, and chromatography of sulfur compounds in thirteen species of shallow-water marine fishes (collected in San Diego, California, USA in 1987–1988) indicate adaptations to sulfide that vary with habitat and lifestyle. Tidal-marsh inhabitants, like Gillichthys mirabilis and Fundulus parvipinnis, have higher tolerance to sulfide (96 h LC50 at 525 to 700 M) relative to outer-bay and open-coast inhabitants (surviving <12 h at much lower concentrations). The cytochrome c oxidase of all species shows high activity and susceptibility to sulfide poisoning, with 50% inhibition at 30 to 500 nM in various tissues. The two marsh species are able to survive at sulfide concentrations already inhibitory to their cytochrome c oxidase and fatal to other species. All species detoxify sulfide by oxidizing it to thiosulfate. All have sulfide-oxidizing activity in the blood, spleen, kidney, liver and gills, which correlates significantly with heme content. Thiosulfate appears in the tissues of sulfide-exposed fish and builds up to high concentrations (up to 2 mM) with stronger and longer exposure. Unexposed fish contain little or no thiosulfate. Sulfide is barely detectable in the tissues, even in high-sulfide exposure tests. We suggest that fish blood, in having high sulfide-oxidizing activity and no cytochrome c oxidase, can act as a short-term first line of defense against sulfide, and thus minimize the amount that reaches the vital organs. The results of this study indicate that sulfide is a significant environmental factor influencing the ecological distribution of marine fishes.  相似文献

Typically three events occur when Octopus vulgaris Cuvier mates. The male inserts its hectocotylus into the mantle cavity of the female; the hectocotylus and the bodies of the male and female become quiescent; and the female increases its ventilation rate about 2.5 times, on the average, above its precopulatory base rate. It is hypothesized that the increased ventilation rate of the female provides the stimulus to the male to transfer its spermatophore to the oviduct. Since the insertion of the hectocotylus and the female's increased ventilation rate may be dissociated, it is suggested that copulation be defined as the attachment of the hectocotylus to the oviduct. A conditioned ventilation-rate increase in the female was observed with repeated testing. Observation of arching and pumping movements of the male as well as measurements of its ventilation rate before and during copulation indicate that only a few spermatophores are transferred per copulation.  相似文献

The mode of development was ascertained for 14 of the 16 species of sea stars known to occur in shallow waters of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica (77°51S; 166°40E). The species were collected between September 1984 and December 1985. Females of three species,Odontaster validus, O. meridionalis andPorania antarctica, spawn small to moderate eggs (0.17 to 0.55 mm), have a high fecundity, and produce feeding larvae. Females of an undescribedPorania species spawn a few eggs (150 to 310) that are 0.55 mm in diameter and develop into demersal non-feeding larvae. Females ofDiplasterias brucei andNotasterias armata produce a few (<300) large eggs (2.8 to 3.5 mm) and brood their young. Females of the remaining eight species have moderate fecundity and produce pelagic non-feeding larvae, as determined from egg type (buoyant, 0.54 to 1.28 mm diam) and direct observations of spawning and development. The high incidence (11 out of 14 species; 79%) of non-feeding development is consistent with predictions that environmental conditions in high-latitude regions are unfavorable for planktotrophic development. Nonetheless, most of the species surveyed (11 out of 14) had pelagic larvae, which contradicts inferences of unusual selection for benthic development in the Antarctic.  相似文献

Reports of bathymetric decrease in the total mycosporine-like amino acid (MAA) concentration of benthic invertebrates suggest that light gradients may be important determinants of MAA content. With the pronounced diel light changes, distinct temporal variations in MAA concentrations might also be expected. We examined the changes in the abundance of MAA in three shallow-water scleractinian corals, Pavona divaricata, Galaxea fascicularis and Montipora digitata from Okinawa, Japan, in relation to daily cycles in solar radiation and tested whether the species have different capabilities for protection against UVR depending on their MAA composition. The results show that symbiotic algae freshly isolated from the investigated coral species do not contain MAAs and that distribution of these compounds resided only within the animal tissue. Total MAA content in the tissue of P. divaricata, G. fascicularis and M. digitata rose rapidly at midday and significantly dropped at night. The observed variations were by a factor of two and, thus, very dramatic. For all the investigated coral species, total MAA concentrations were significantly correlated with the diurnal cycle in solar radiation, during both winter and summer seasons. Seawater temperature was significantly correlated with MAA levels only in the June experiment, but represented no more than 20% of the MAA variation in all three coral species, whereas solar radiation explained 60–70% of the MAA fluctuations. This suggests that MAAs are an integral component of the hard corals biochemical defense system against high solar irradiance stress. The diurnal increase in total MAA concentrations was due to an increase in the concentration of imino-MAA species of up to 2–2.5-fold of their pre-dawn values. In contrast, the oxocarbonyl-MAA mycosporine-glycine (Myc-Gly) showed the lowest (Tukey–Kramer HSD test: P<0.05) values at midday, compared to afternoon and night hours. Analysis of diel changes in chlorophyll fluorescence and chlorophyll a content of the investigated species revealed that P. divaricata and G. fascicularis were less sensitive to the high levels of ambient irradiance compared to M. digitata. In P. divaricata and G. fascicularis, Myc-Gly, an MAA with an antioxidant function, is the most abundant MAA, contributing about 70% to the total MAA pool, whereas the major MAA factions in M. digitata were represented by oxidatively robust imino-MAAs. We speculate that MAAs furnish scleractinian corals with protection from biologically damaging ultraviolet radiation through both the direct sunscreening activity of imino-MAAs and the antioxidant properties of oxocarbonyl-MAAs and suggest that the predominance, in the host tissue, of MAA species with an antioxidant ability may render corals more tolerant to high photosynthetically active and ultraviolet radiation.Communicated by T. Energy budgets were determined for small pieces (nubbins) of the coralsPocillopora damicornis, Montipora verrucosa andPorites lobata living at a water depth of 3 m on the fringing reef of Coconut Island, Kaneohe, Hawaii. The budgets were determined for three different types of day: an ideal day with no cloud and an in situ daily integrated irradiance at 3 m of 14.385 E m–2 d–1; a normal day with sporadic cloud cover and daily irradiance of 11.915 E m–2 d–1; and an overcast day with daily irradiance of 6.128 E m–2 d–1. On the ideal day, the energy fixed in photosynthesis was more than that required for respiration and growth of both zooxanthellae and animal components of the association, and there was a predicted loss of between 19.3 and 32.4% of the energy fixed. On a normal day, the total photosynthetic energy fixation was lower and the excess was between 12.1 and 27.9% of the energy fixed. On the overcast day, however, in bothPocillopora damicornis andPorites lobata energy expenditure exceeded photosynthetic energy fixation and the budget was in deficit. Estimates of rate of mucus secretion on an overcast day were derived and, when incorporated into the energy budget, it was predicted that all three species would have a deficit budget, necessitating the catabolism of lipid reserves. From published values for lipid storage in these species it was calculated that the reserves would last from 28 d inPocillopora damicornis to 114 d inM. verrucosa. A model is suggested in which corals draw upon their extensive lipid stores on days of sub-optimal light, replenishing the reserves again when daily light levels are high, and finally excreting the excess energy fixed, as mucus-lipid when the lipid stores are replete.  相似文献

DNA sequence diversity of octopods was investigated using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase III gene (mtCOIII). DNA was obtained from ethanol- or formalin-fixed tissue of 15 specimens belonging to Octopus mimus Gould, 1852, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 and Scaeurgus unicirrhus d'Orbigny, 1840, from coastal waters of the Mediterranean (France), the southwestern Atlantic (Brazil), the Caribbean (Costa Rica) and the southeastern/tropical Pacific (north Chile/Costa Rica). A 612 bp fragment of the mtCOIII gene was sequenced and aligned to the orthologous sequences available from northeastern Pacific Octopus species. Possible phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed. The mtCOIII gene tree revealed two main clusters, one comprised O. rubescens, O. dofleini and O. californicus, while the other included all O. vulgaris specimens, O. bimaculatus, O. bimaculoides and O. mimus. With one exception all South American haplotypes including O. bimaculatus and O. bimaculoides appeared as the sister group of the Mediterranean haplotype of O. vulgaris, indicating that most of the South American O. vulgaris specimens investigated would not belong to the recently redescribed species O. vulgaris restricted to the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic. The treatment of O. mimus as a species distinct from Mediterranean O. vulgaris is supported by a high nucleotide divergence of 12.7%. Based on the mtCOIII gene tree the existence of cryptic species among O. vulgaris-like octopods is suggested. Received: 15 January 1999 / Accepted: 15 October 1999  相似文献

The unique hydrography of the Western Mediterranean Sea does not favour the formation of typical estuaries, although it does favour that of other land-sea systems. However, in Els Alfacs, a shallow-water bay situated in the Ebre Delta (northeast Spain), where there are considerable continental inputs, the distribution patterns of the macrofauna and the meiofauna reflect a hydrographical regime very similar to that of an estuary. During July 1987, 23 stations were sampled in the Alfacs Bay using plastic cores. The distribution pattern of the meiofauna follows a gradient and presents a less marked zonation than the macrofauna. Nevertheless, in both cases the peak densities of both faunal components are spatially separated from the principal site of freshwater inflow. The average density of the macrofauna (10 430 individuals/m2) and the meiofauna (704 100 individuals/m2) occurs in the bay during the period of maximum flow (spring-summer), and as such this bay is one of the most productive areas of the Western Mediterranean.  相似文献

In this work, competition for two nitrogen resources (nitrate-, nitrite-nitrogen) between three hydrogen oxidizing denitrifying populations (Acidovorax sp. strain Ic3 (X1), Paracoccus sp. strain Ic1 (X2), and Acinetobacter sp. strain Ic2 (X3)) was examined. The dynamics of three systems of microbial populations (system I: X1 − X3, system II: X2 − X3, and system III: X1 − X2 − X3), grown in a chemostat, was studied using bifurcation analysis. The chemostat is the most common type of biological reactor used for the study of microbial growth under controlled conditions. The effect of the operating parameters (i.e., dilution rate and feed nitrate nitrogen concentration) on the long-term behavior of the systems showed that X3 was the predominant population for a wide range of combinations of dilution rate and feed nitrate nitrogen concentration. Also, coexistence of two populations (X2X3, X1X3) was observed. The results of the bifurcation analysis were also used to determine the denitrification rate and the nitrite nitrogen accumulation for each of the three systems as a function of the dilution rate (up to 0.17 h−1) and the feed nitrate nitrogen concentration (up to 300 mg/L). The highest denitrification rate was achieved by system I (28 mg/Lh). A comparison between the three systems showed that the nitrite nitrogen concentration in system I was less than the one in system III, while the two systems gave similar denitrification rates. The second system had the greatest accumulation of nitrites with the lowest denitrification rate.  相似文献

The biology of Octopus vulgaris Cuvier inhabiting subtropical littoral reefs off the east coast of South Africa was investigated. Analyses of stomach contents and lair middens revealed that the mussel Perna perna was the dominant food organism. Growth rate of captive individuals was higher than has previously been recorded but food conversion was lower. Females became sexually mature at 900 g which is estimated to be attained in 3.6 months. Males became sexually mature at 400 g, which is estimated to be attained after 3 months. Results indicate that females live for 9–12 months and have the potential to reach 4 000 g in 240 d while males live for about 12–15 months and have the potential to achieve 4 000 g in 290 d. Mating and breeding occurred throughout the year although evidence for the seasonal migration of females is presented and discussed in relation to breeding and feeding behaviour.  相似文献

The circumpolar nudibranch Tritoniella belli Eliot occurs in abundance in shallow-water benthic communities of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Density estimates based on belt transects averaged collectively 0.46 individuals m−2 at three study sites between depths of 6 and 30 m in November 1996. At two of the sites, population densities increased linearly between 18 and 30 m depth (up to 0.7 and 1.15 individuals m−2 at 30 m depth). Individuals at all sites were rare or absent at depths shallower than 12 m. Size frequencies of individuals at the sites were similar, and a pooled analysis revealed a unimodal distribution skewed highly towards juvenile size classes. This suggests both recent recruitment and constant rates of mortality across size classes. The relationship between foot length and wet weight best fits an exponential growth equation, indicative of an allometric growth pattern. Distribution of T. belli in the field suggests that it is a habitat and diet generalist. Potential invertebrate predators include sea anemones and seastars, both of which co-occur in abundance in McMurdo Sound. Laboratory experiments indicate that the sea anemone Isotealia antarctica can capture and ingest T. belli. However, 70% of T. belli that are captured escape from the tentacles or, following ingestion, are rejected from the gastrovascular cavity. The seastars Odontaster validus, Perknaster fuscus, and Acodontaster conspicuus, avoid contact with T. belli, but if forced into contact with mantle tissues, retract their tube-feet. Mucus secreted from the mantle tissues, coated on to the tips of glass rods, and presented to seastar tube-feet, causes significantly longer tube-foot retraction times than control rods. Moreover, pieces of freeze-dried krill coated with mantle mucus are consumed significantly less often than untreated control pieces of krill by a benthic scavenging fish (Pseudotrematomas bernacchi). Employing seastar tube-foot retractions as a bioassay, we found the bioactive compound(s) are soluble in ethyl acetate, indicating they are lipophilic or moderately hydrophilic in nature. Chemical defenses in the mucus of T. belli probably contribute to its high abundance in Antarctic benthic communities. Received: 6 October 1997 / Accepted: 24 March 1998  相似文献

The octocoral fauna inhabiting the shallow waters (<50 m) of the eastern Pacific has been the subject of renewed interest, and the taxonomy of the most important genera in the region has been reviewed and clarified. Many new species have been described, significantly increasing the known biological diversity of the region. Despite their importance as potential sister-groups of Caribbean octocorals, the phylogenetic relationships of eastern Pacific octocorals remain poorly studied. Here, using partial mitochondrial MutS and igr1-COI sequences, we provide a phylogenetic assessment of a broad sample of eastern Pacific shallow-water octocorals and investigate their phylogenetic relationships with Caribbean gorgonians. We corroborate the monophyly of Pacifigorgia, Leptogorgia and Eugorgia and provide evidence of a close relationship between Swiftia and Psammogorgia, currently placed in Plexauridae. In addition, the phylogenies obtained here provide insights into the historical biogeography and phylogenetic diversity of the eastern Pacific octocoral assemblages and on character evolution among this diverse faunal assemblage. Finally, we evaluate the classification power of DNA barcoding for identifying species of shallow-water eastern Pacific octocorals and assess the use of a nuclear intron (SRP54) to supplement traditional mitochondrial barcodes in this group of organisms.  相似文献
