The ecological role of diel vertical migration of Heterosigma akashiwo Hada to initiate red tide was investigated in Tanigawa Fishing Port and Sano Harbor, Osaka Bay, Japan during red tide seasons in 1979 and 1980. This species migrated toward the surface early in the morning at a velocity of 1.0 to 1.3 m h-1. Downward migration was found in the afternoon, and more than 2.0×103 cells ml-1 aggregated in the bottom layer at night. The upward migration started before sunrise and downward shifting occurred prior to sunset. The movement is presumably associated with circadian rhythm, which is known as one of the biological periodicities. H. akashiwo crossed steep temperature and salinity gradients (6.5°C and 5.7 S) during the diel vertical migration. High values of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen concentrations were obtained in dialysis bags suspended in situ at identical layers with high cell concentration, while the values for surface and bottom bags were comparatively low. The results reveal that H. akashiwo migrates toward the sea surface to carry out photosynthesis effectively, and to the bottom to utilize nutrients efficiently.  相似文献

To elucidate roles of cysts in occurrences of Heterosigma akashiwo blooms, cyst dynamics were studied in northern Hiroshima Bay, the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, where H. akashiwo regularly forms red tide in June. Monthly measurements of seasonal changes in the densities of vegetative cells of H. akashiwo and their germinable cysts in surface sediments (top 1-cm layer) were made for 2 years at three stations. Vegetative cells of H. akashiwo could be detected from April through December throughout the water column, and the existence of vegetative cells was confirmed in surface waters even in winter after incubation of sampled seawater in culture medium. Germinable cysts, enumerated by the extinction dilution method, existed in sediments in all seasons, even before and after the seasonal bloom. The effects of incubation temperature on the germination of natural cysts of H. akashiwo in sediments were examined. Germination was not observed at 5 °C, was low at 10 °C, while it increased at 15 °C, and maintained a high level to 25 °C. The bottom water temperature reached 15 °C (suitable for the germination of cysts) and the surface about 18 °C or more (suitable for the growth of vegetative cells) 2 to 3 weeks before the blooms. The dark survival of H. akashiwo cysts was tested, and it was found that the cysts were viable for at least 650 d at 11 °C, and for 165 d at 25 °C, indicating a significant role of cysts in the survival during winter and summer seasons. The cysts presumably also play an important role in seeding primary populations into water columns when the bottom water reaches a suitable temperature (around 15 °C); thereafter the populations develop with great annual regularity to bloom in June. These results suggest that initiation of H. akashiwo red tides in the Seto Inland Sea could be triggered by bottom water temperature.

The localisation of halogenated furanones, the biologically active secondary metabolites from the red alga Delisea pulchra (Greville), was determined by a combination of fluorescence microscopy, culture studies and quantitative chemical analyses. All types of evidence showed that furanones are localised in the central vesicle of gland cells in D. pulchra. These cells release furanones onto the surface of the plant, where they can be quantified using a newly developed surface extraction-technique. Levels of furanones on the surface of the plant were highest near the apical tips (≃100 ng cm−2), and decreased towards the base of the alga. Variation in furanone levels within the plant and variation in the number of gland cells followed a similar pattern. The localisation of furanones within gland cells in D. pulchra and the presence and concentrations of furanones on the surface of the plant are consistent with furanones functioning as antifoulants and in mediating other ecological interactions at the surface of the alga. By means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the influence of the red tide species Chattonella antiqua was examined with respect to the surface ultrastructures of chloride cells of the yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata. Conspicuous ultrastructural alterations occurred on the apical surface of these cells. The majority of chloride cells in the control gills showed an apical surface with numerous cellular extensions, while more than half the chloride cells affected by red tide organisms exhibited an apical surface with fewer and smaller extensions, a wrinkled apical surface, or a protruded apical surface. These ultrastructural alterations of chloride cell surface may be due to the partial disturbance of salinity by C. antiqua, and reflect the changes of the ion-transport function in yellowtail gills exposed to red tide water.  相似文献

The gastro-intestinal contents of the sea gull Laurus brunicephalus Jerdon were found to possess antibacterial activity. This activity could be traced to heavy accumulations of the marine blue-green alga Trichodesmium erythraeum in the gut. During 1969, a bloom of T. erythraeum began in Porto Novo waters about the middle of February, and attained a peak during the second week of March. It has been reported previously by the author that antibacterial properties are exhibited by T. erythraeum maintained in laboratory cultures, as well as in water samples collected from a red tide area. It was also reported (Ramamurthy, 1970) that the gut contents in 2 pelagic fishes, Hilsa kanagurta and Rastrelliger kanagurta, collected during the same red tide bloom period, possessed antibacterial properties. During this period large numbers of these fishes were consumed by sea gulls L. brunicephalus. In view of this finding, experimental procedures were adopted to determine whether extracts of T. erythraeum occurring in the gut of the sea gulls might exhibit antibacterial activity. It was found that T. erythraeum collected from the gut of L. brunicephalus could inhibit both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Gastro-intestinal extracts from L. brunicephalus collected during the non-bloom period of T. erythraeum showed heavy microbial growth of bacteria and fungi. Evidently, antibacterial or sterile conditions prevail in the gut of these tropical sea gulls in a manner similar to that observed in Polar penguins by Sieburth (1959, 1961).  相似文献

Chattonella marina, a raphidophycean flagellate, is a highly toxic red tide phytoplankton which causes severe damage to fish farming. Recent studies demonstrated that Chattonella spp. continuously release superoxide anions (O2 ) while they are living. Heterosigma akashiwo, another raphidophycean flagellate, also produces O2 . In the present study, we found that lectins such as concanavalin A (Con A), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), and castor bean hemagglutinin (CBH) stimulated  C. marina and H. akashiwo to generate enhanced amounts of O2 in a concentration-dependent manner. The lectin-specific sugars potently inhibited the lectin-induced increase of O2 production, suggesting that the effects of lectins are mediated mainly through the interaction of these lectins with carbohydrate moiety present on the flagellate cell surface. In contrast to the potent ability of native Con A (tetravalent), succinylated Con A (divalent) showed only a slight stimulative effect on these flagellates. O2 production was totally inhibited by treatment with proteinase K for 30 min, without affecting the viabilities of flagellates. These results suggest that cell-surface redox enzymes may be involved in O2 production, and such enzymes are responsible for the lectin-stimulation. A marine algicidal gliding bacterium Cytophaga sp. strain J18/M01 was isolated in 1990 from a station in northern Harima-Nada, the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, using the harmful red tide alga Chattonella antiqua (Hada) Ono as a susceptible organism. The bacterium can prey upon various species of microalgae. Temporal fluctuations of this bacterium and Chattonella spp. [C. antiqua and C. marina (Subrahmanyan) Hara et Chihara] were investigated weekly at the above station in the summer of 1997 and 1998, using immunofluorescence assay employing highly specific polyclonal antibodies for the bacterium. In the summer of 1997, the cell density of Chattonella spp. showed a maximum value (70 cells ml−1) on 8 July, and decreased thereafter. The bacterium Cytophaga sp. J18/M01 was commonly detected around a few hundreds of cells per milliliter or less. The number of Cytophaga sp. J18/M01 increased after the peak of Chattonella spp., and the maximum cell number of the bacterium was 1350 ml−1. This algicidal bacterium also followed the changes of total amounts of microalgal biomass (chlorophyll a+pheophytin) when Chattonella spp. were absent. In the summer of 1998, Chattonella spp. were relatively less abundant (maximum 21 cells ml−1), and the algicidal bacterium Cytophaga sp. J18/M01 showed a close relationship with the change of total microalgal biomass. The present study suggests that the algicidal bacterium Cytophaga sp. J18/M01 preyed upon, not only harmful red tide microalgae, but also other common microalgae such as diatoms, and the bacterium presumably plays an important role in regulating microalgal biomass in natural marine environments. Variabilities in the responses of several South African red and green macroalgae to direct grazing and the responses of one green alga to cues from grazers were tested. We used two feeding experiments: (1) testing the induced responses of three red and one green algae to direct grazing by mesograzers and (2) a multi-treatment experiment, in which the direct and indirect effects of one macrograzer species on the green alga Codium platylobium were assessed. Consumption rates were assessed in feeding assays with intact algal pieces and with agar pellets containing non-polar extracts of the test algae. Defensive responses were induced for intact pieces of Galaxaura diessingiana, but were not induced in pellets, suggesting either morphological defence or chemical defence using polar compounds other than polyphenols. In contrast, exposure to grazing stimulated consumption of Gracilaria capensis and Hypnea spicifera by another grazing species. In the multi-treatment experiment, waterborne cues from both grazing and non-grazing snails induced defensive algal traits in C. platylobium. We suggest that inducible defences among macroalgae are not restricted to brown algae, but that both the responses of algae to grazers and of grazers to the defences of macroalgae are intrinsically variable and complex.  相似文献

This study was carried out in July 1989 and 1990 to confirm whether the neurotoxins of the red tide organism Chattonella marine contribute to the cardiac disorder and death of fish. Exposure of fish to C. marina red tide water significantly decreased the heart rate, presumably resulting in anoxia from reduced blood circulation in the gill. Since atropine restored the depressed heart rate, the cardiac disorder seemed to occur neurogenously in association with the intrinsic cardiophysiology of the fish. Neurotoxin fractions of C. marina and Gymnodinium sp. depolarized the vagal nerve of fish, and hence induced the reduction of heart rate. Depression of the heart rate in fish exposed to C. marina red tide water, thus, seemed to be caused by the neurotoxins of these organisms. Histological examination showed little branchial damage due to neurotoxin fractions.  相似文献

Structural resistance of algae to herbivores   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Experiments were conducted to determine the forces required for two limpet species to remove tissue from three different types of algae. This was done by using the radulae of the limpets, mimicking the way they use this feeding apparatus. For both Acmaea mitra Rathke (a specialist herbivore) and Notoacmea scutum (Rathke) (a generalist herbivore), Iridaea cordata (Turn.) Bory (a thin, bladed red alga) required the most force; Hedophyllum sessile (C.Ag.) Setch. (a thick, bladed brown alga) the next; and Pseudolithophyllum whidbeyensi (a crustose, calcified alga) required the least amount of force for tissue removal. These results are the inverse of the predictions made by current functional form and functional group models which use the thallus form as a predictor of herbivore resistance. Thallus form alone is a poor predictor of structural resistance to molluscan feeding; the material properties of the alga, the feeding apparatus of the herbivore, and the mode of feeding all must be considered.  相似文献

The structure and some functional characteristics of the plankton community at the time of aExuviaella cordata red tide were investigated in Burgas Bay, Bulgaria, in May and June 1986. Characteristics of main plankton components (phyto-, bacterio-, nanoheterotrophic plankton, ciliates and mesoplankton) in the bloom area are presented. Development of theE. cordata bloom was determined by abiotic conditions among which eutrophication and salinity decrease caused the patchy character of its rapid development. Attainment of maximum red tide (ca. 1x109 cells l-1; 1x103 g m-3) from background (500 to 800x103 cells l-1; 600 mg m-3) took 3 to 7d. Growth rate () during that period was 1.2 to 2.2 doublings per day. A sharp bloom decline (3 to 4d) was caused by parasitic flagellates destroying the alga's chloroplast. Diel biomass losses due to grazing remained below 5%. Metabolites and degradation products ofE. cordata revealed no pronounced toxic effects on the other components of the planktonic community. The rapid bloom degradation due to the effects of parasitic flagellates indicates the high potential of ecosystem self-regulation.  相似文献

In Dictyota dichotoma, as in many other plants, the chromatophores which at low intensities occupy the cell walls perpendicular to the light beam move to the side walls parallel to the light beam if exposed to high light intensities. The aim of this investigation was to find out whether or not the changes from low- to high-intensity arrangement and vice versa function as an active control mechanism to regulate photosynthetic activity in D. dichotoma under the respective light condition. Four different experimental approaches were made: (a) In white and blue light experiments the changes of the transmittance and of the rate of photosynthetic oxygen production in high- and low-intensity arrangement were compared. (b) The kinetics of the depression and recovery of the PS-rates, as well as of the transmittance changes, were determined during high- and low-intensity movement, respectively. (c) Transmittance and PS-rates of thalli under illumination with polarized and unpolarized light of the same intensity (1,000 1x) were compared. (d) PS-rates of thalli after darkening as well as after preirradiation with weak and strong red light, conditions under which the chromatophores occupy the same position in the cells, were measured. In all these experiments the photosynthetic activity was strongly influenced by pre-illumination, but was independent of the respective chromatophore arrangement. This finding was confirmed by experiments with two other algae: (1) In the brown alga Alaria esculenta which does not display light-induced chromatophore displacements and concomitant transmittance changes, pre-irradiation with high light intensities decreases the PS-rates. (2) In the green alga Ulva lactuca, which shows circadian chloroplast movements, the PS-rates depend on the pre-irradiation only, irrespective of the chloroplast position. Thus we may conclude that in these organisms the function of chromatophore displacements is not the regulation of photosynthetic activity. Other ecological functions are discussed.  相似文献

The gills of the yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata, exposed to Chattonella marina a red tide species, were examined histologically and histochemically. The pavement cells of primary lamellae were swollen in the exposed specimens. This presumably indicates that C. marina contains undetermined toxic substances. The number of mucous cells containing mucous decreased in proportion to the duration of exposure. The loss of the mucous substance in the cells is probably due to the ichthyotoxic stimulus caused by C. marina. A decrease of carbonic anhydrase activity in the secondary lamellae was confirmed, when mucous substances were lost in most mucous cells. Since the carbonic anhydrase usually exists in the epithelia of the secondary lamellae, it was presumably resolved by C. marina. The decrease of the carbonic anhydrase activity may cause certain physiological disadvantages to the fish exposed to C. marina.  相似文献

Although planktonic copepods are major suspension feeders in the sea, the impact of their grazing pressure upon red-tide flagellates has not been fully investigated. In the present study, the grazing of adult females of several copepod species is examined using three food types: viz. natural suspended particles, natural suspended particles mixed with cultured Chattonella antiqua, and cultured C. antiqua. The functional response on C. antiqua was investigated for five species of copepods (Acartia erythraea, Calanus sinicus, Centropages yamadai, Paracalanus parvus and Pseudodiaptomus marinus). Ingestion rates increased linearly with increasing cell concentrations until a maximum level was reached, beyond which the rates were constant. This cell concentration was higher for larger copepods. The weight-specific maximum ingestion rates were higher in the small species. In general, copepods tended to feed selectively on larger particles when feeding on natural particles. This tendency was strongest in a simulated red-tide environment. Thus, it can be surmised that copepods may selectively graze on C. antiqua during the outbreak of a red tide. Grazing pressure by the natural copepod community in Harima Nada, the Inland Sea of Japan, was calculated by integration of the laboratory determined feeding rates and field measurements of zooplankton biomass. The daily removal rate was 3.4 to 30.8% (mean: 12.3%) of C. antiqua biomass at 20 cells ml-1 and decreased to 0.6–4.3% (mean: 1.8%) at 500 cells ml-1. Therefore, the grazing pressure by the copepod community is important at the initial stage of the red tide.  相似文献

In this work, we investigated photosynthetic gas exchange responses of the red alga Acanthophora najadiformis (collected in 1991 from a shore near Netanya, Israel) to heating, light, inorganic carbon and desiccation of the thalli. This was done to elucidate some of the contributing causes for its particular restricted vertical distribution within the lower intertidal zone of the Israeli Mediterranean rocky shore. In contrast to other common intertidal species, the photosynthetic performance of A. najadiformis was very sensitive to desiccation and to high temperature, and these factors may thus prevent the alga from growing above the surge zone. On the other hand, this species photosynthesized five times faster in air than in water (provided it was kept highly hydrated), and this may be the reason why it does not succeed in competing with other algae in the subtidal which use HCO 3 - more efficiently. This paper is in partial fulfillment of a Ph.D. study by R. Einav in cooperation with the Department of Ecology, University of Bielefeld (under supervision of Prof. Dr. S. W. Breckle), under a cooperative arrangement between Tel Aviv and Bielefeld Universities  相似文献

Potent inducers of metamorphosis of planktonic larvae of the gastropod mollusc Haliotis rufescens have been found in the following phycobiliprotein-producing cyanobacteria. Synechococcus spp. (one marine and one freshwater strain). Synechocystis spp. (one hypersaline and one freshwater strain) and Spirulina platensis (a freshwater strain). No inducers were detected in the bacterium Escherichia coli. Inducers from one of the cyanobacteria (S. platensis) were partially purified and compared to inducers from the foliose red macroalga Porphyra sp. and the crustose coralline red alga Lithothamnium californicum. In all three species the inducers can be largely separated from the biliproteins, with which they appear to be associated, by high-resolution gel-filtration chromatography. The molecular weights of the relatively small inducing molecules resolved by these procedures from cyanobacteria and red algac are similar, falling in the range of 640 to 1 250 daltons. The amenability of the cyanobacteria to largescale cultivation, and to physiological and genetic manipulation, make them useful for production of metamorphic inducers of marine invertebrate larval metamorphosis, and for further studies of the synthesis, structure and mechanism of action of such inducing molecules.  相似文献

High intertidal community organization on a rocky headland in Maine,USA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A mosaic patchwork of the barnacle Balanus balanoides L., the mussel Mytilus edulis L., and the alga Fucus vesiculosus L. was found in the transitional region between the mid and high intertidal zones on a rocky headland on Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA. The development of the mosaic was observed by following recruitment and survival of B. balanoides in denuded patches located at the same tidal level along a 60 m stretch of shore. Barnacle recruitment was least under canopies of F. vesiculosus and greatest in open areas kept moist at low tide by surf. Barnacle survival after settlement was least under the F. vesiculosus canopy due to the whiplash effect of the algal fronds in the surf and greatest in open areas free from competition from mussels. In open areas, early mortality was correlated with settlement density. In areas of dense settlement (60 spat cm-2) up to 90% mortality resulted within 5 months from crowding associated with growth. In older individuals crowding produced hummocks of elongated, weakly attached barnacles which were more prone to removal by surf than uncrowded barnacles. Mussels exerted competitive dominance over barnacles for space and the presence of mussel beds prevented further barnacle recruitment. Mussels suffered extensive mortality during winter storms when surf removed dense mats of weakly attached mussels. The patchy distribution of mussels and barnacles results from irregular rock substrata producing numerous environmental patches with respect to wave exposure and drainage at low tide, and from densitydependent mortality of both mussels and barnacles which creates patches of new colonizable space within each environmental patch.  相似文献

The invasive red alga Gracilaria vermiculophylla has quickly spread across Europe, but it is unclear whether its success is based on a high tolerance to variations in environmental conditions or to the absence of native grazers that feed on this alga. We tested whether native invertebrate grazers prefer native algae to G. vermiculophylla. Feeding preferences of three common herbivores were quantified when offered G. vermiculophylla and native Fucus vesiculosus, Ceramium virgatum, and Ulva intestinalis in no-, two- and multiple-choice trials. Herbivore growth was measured when fed each of the algae separately. Grazers consumed G. vermiculophylla in no-choice trials, but avoided generally this alga when having a choice. U. intestinalis was always preferred over G. vermiculophylla, and grazers fed with U. intestinalis grew faster than those fed with G. vermiculophylla. We conclude that grazers avoid G. vermiculophylla to most native algae, which may benefit G. vermiculophylla in northern European estuaries.  相似文献

We investigated mycosporine amino acid (MAA) involvement as protective sunscreens in spawn of the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela to determine if adult diet and ultraviolet (UV) exposure affected the UV sensitivity of developing embryos. Adults were fed a red alga rich in MAAs (Acanthophora spicifera) or a green alga poor in MAAs (Ulva lactuca). Adults on each diet were exposed for 2 wk to ambient solar irradiance with two types of acrylic filters; one allowed exposure to wavelengths >275 nm (designated UV) and one to wavelengths only >410 nm (designated NOUV). Spawn from each adult group was likewise treated with UV or NOUV and monitored during development for differences in mortality and metabolic rate (measured as oxygen consumption: O2). Also recorded were number of eggs or embryos per capsule, times to hatching, hatching success, size at hatching, and O2 of adults. Spawn from adults eating red algae was almost twice as rich in MAAs as spawn from adults eating green algae, suggesting that MAA content is diet-related. Although overall quantities of MAAs in the spawn reflected MAA contents of the adult diet, specific MAAs were differentially sequestered in the spawn. Thus, porphyra-334, found in high concentration in Aplysia dactylomela's preferred red algal food, was present in only low concentration in the spawn. Conversely, mycosporine-glycine, in low concentration in red algal food, was the most abundant MAA in the spawn. UV treatment of adults had no effect on quantities of MAAs in the spawn. Adults exposed to UV had significantly higher O2s and spawned twice as often. The UV-treated adults produced spawn with significantly higher O2s and their embryos developed to hatching sooner. The only significant effect of UV exposure of the spawn was to reduce the percentage of veligers hatching from 71 to 50%. There was no significant effect on hatching time or size of the veligers at hatching, nor on number of eggs per capsule. Received: 13 May 1997 / Accepted: 27 June 1997  相似文献
