Summary Anti-predator behaviors of the bannertail kangaroo rat (Dipodomys spectabilis) toward snake predators were investigated. We induced responses by presenting a live (tethered) snake and an inflatable snake decoy to rats of known ages and sex in their territories. Comparisons of behaviors during spontaneous activity (baseline), naturally occurring snake-rat interactions, and experimental procedures further clarified anti-predator behaviors. The tethered snake immediately induced high rates of footdrumming (the repeated striking of the hind feet on the ground) in all rats (n=24) (Table 2), and individuals of both sexes and all ages footdrummed significantly more at the tethered snake than at the decoy. Other antipredator behaviors included alert postures, jumpback, kicking sand and avoidance. Juvenile rats exhibited more avoidance behavior and alert postures than adults and footdrummed at the decoy only if they experienced the snake first. We conclude that footdrumming functions as an individual alarm signal against predation by snakes in D. spectabilis. The drumming probably informs a snake that it has been detected and may cause it to leave. Because rats did not footdrum in response to aerial predators (owls), we suggest that kangaroo rats use different anti-predator strategies that depend on the kind of threat and the type of predator.  相似文献

Mating strategies of a nocturnal, desert rodent (Dipodomys spectabilis)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The mating system of a nocturnal, desert rodent, the banner-tailed kangaroo rat (Dipodomys spectabilis) was studied through direct observation, live-trapping, and radiotelemetry over a 13-month period from August 1986 to August 1987. Mating behavior varied from exclusive matings between male and female neighbors to competitive mate searching and direct male competition. In summer matings and early in a November to May breeding season, males located receptive females and mated exclusively with them without disturbance from other males. As the operational sex ratio changed in favor of males, multiple males converged on an estrous female's territory and competed for access to her. However, an older, experienced male usually monopolized the matings of the same one to two close female neighbors for the entire breeding period, and females mated with the same male neighbor over several estrous cycles. Monopolization of females by neighbor males was facilitated by female relaxation of individual territorial defense. Dominant males spent considerable time in the territories of the females they monopolized before and during mating. This relaxation in territorial defense was seen in dyadic encounters in which females tolerated all males but allowed significantly more contact by neighbor than stranger males. Neighbor recognition, therefore, seems important in coordinating the mating interactions of this solitary rodent.  相似文献

Tetrasporogenesis in Osmundea spectabilis (Postels and Ruprecht) K.W. Nam var. spectabilis proceeds through three developmental stages. A uninucleate tetraspore mother cell with synaptonemal complexes depicted during early prophase of meiosis I comprises the youngest stage. Subsequently, the nuclear envelope obtains a highly irregular profile and is surrounded by perinuclear endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and numerous mitochondria. Proplastids with peripheral thylakoid and numerous straight-profiled dictyosomes are present. Dictyosome vesicles discharge their contents, initiating tetraspore wall formation. A four-nucleate tetraspore mother cell is formed prior to tetrahedral cleavage. During the second stage of tetraspore formation the nuclei are very irregular in outline and move toward the central region where they fuse. The formation of fibrous vacuoles originates from the fibrous vacuole associated organelles (FVAOs). Thylakoid formation from concentric lamellar bodies (CLBs) seems to occur in plastids. Extremely hypertrophied dictyosomes with two tightly compressed and densely laminated mid-regions produce vesicles which contribute to enlargement of the fibrous vacuoles. During the second stage of tetraspore development striated vesicles are formed and starch granule formation increases. Mature tetraspores are characterized by numerous cored vesicles and abundant starch granules. Plastids have a fully developed system of internal thylakoids, and cleavage is usually complete at this stage. Mature tetraspores are surrounded by a bi-layered wall and the tetrasporangial wall. Unbranched, tubular structures connecting the plasmalemma with the peripheral sheets of ER are possibly involved in wall deformation. A distinct blebbing nuclear envelope appears to sequester vesicles into the cytoplasm.  相似文献

Summary. Recent advances in both the systematics and the natural products chemistry of the order Sacoglossa (=Ascoglossa) in the gastropod subclass Opisthobranchia suggest a revised and improved historical account of the evolution of the group. Although the algal genus Caulerpa makes a suitable model for the ancestral food of the order, other siphonaceous algae are consistent with both morphological and chemical data. At an early evolutionary stage terpenoids are sequestered from the food, and used defensively, often with modification. With an evolutionary switch to different kinds of algal food, there is often a shift to other, related defensive chemicals. A switch to new food source sometimes leads to the abandonment of chemical defense, but in other cases there is de-novo synthesis of defensive metabolites. The synthesis of polypropionates, which are used defensively, occurs in some other gastropods, but otherwise is known only in fungi. The systematic distribution of the defensive polypropionates suggests that their defensive use has evolved several times among gastropods. Failure to detect them may mean that synthetic capacity has evolved more than once, or it may mean that they exist at low levels, perhaps having a non-defensive function. Summary Mates of breeding crow pairs are both involved in territorial defence. They cooperate by operating simultaneously, by choosing certain spatial positions relative to one another and by encouraging one another. Evidence is presented for the view that these types of intra-pair cooperation can be looked upon as adaptations increasing the effectiveness of territorial defence. They may have been evolved under such pressures as nest robbery by, and resource competition with, conspecifics.  相似文献

Summary I removed resident pairs of great tits from their territories for short periods and released them after replacement pairs had occupied the spaces. When two pairs are manipulated in this way into occupying the same territory an escalated contest ensures. Contests between residents and replacements are longer, more likely to involve physical fights and longer fights or displays than contests between established neighbours or residents and intruders. The degree of escalation between residents and replacements is an increasing function of replacement time. It rises to a peak and then diminishes again. The probability that the replacement will defeat the former resident is an increasing function of replacement time, reaching 90% after several days. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that territorial residents win in contests against intruders because of an asymmetry in payoff rather than an asymmetry in resource holding potential or an arbitary convention. A possibly asymmetry in payoff in the great tit is the cost of defending the territory against neighbours. The cost is higher for replacements than for residents.  相似文献

Cheilodactylus spectabilis (Hutton) is common over shallow reefs in north-eastern New Zealand. Replicated transect between-area differences in density and in size frequency. C. spectabilis is not nocturnally active. The between-area differences in density and size frequency remained constant over daylight hours, demonstrating that C. spectabilis does not undergo any systematic feeding migrations. Topographic complexity was shown to have a significant positive influence on fish density. Mean size was related to water depth at 5 localities investigated, with small (<200 mm standard length, SL) individuals being restricted to shallow water. All sizes of C. spectabilis examined had fed on small invertebrates, with gammarid amphipods predominating. No evidence of size-related differentiation in feeding patterns was observed, although small individuals spent significantly more time feeding than large ones. Small (<200 mm SL) individuals occupied feeding areas and shelter sites from which they excluded other small C. spectabilis. Large individuals showed no site-associated aggression, covered a greater area during daily movements and overlapped with other large and small C. spectabilis while feeding. No evidence of dawn or dusk peaks of feeding activity or movement was collected.  相似文献

Age specific maternal defense in Gargaphia solani (Hemiptera: Tingidae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary It is predicted that the intensity of parental defense of offspring is a function of both the increasing reproductive value of offspring and the decreasing reproductive value of parents. The ontogeny of maternal defensive behavior in the lace bug Gargaphia solani is consistent with these predictions in that mothers become more aggressive as they age (between clutches) and also more aggressive as nymphs reach maturity (within clutches).Published with the approval of the Director of the Delaware Agricultural Experiment Station as Miscellaneous Paper No. 981, Contribution No. 513 of the Department of Entomology and Applied Ecology, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19711, USA  相似文献

Males of the parapatically distributed myobatrachid frogs Geocrinia laevis and G. victoriana have highly divergent advertisement calls. Furthermore, the two species differ strongly in the complexity of their vocal repertoires, with males of G. victoriana possessing, and those of G. laevis lacking, a distinct territorial vocalization (encounter call). We investigated the territorial vocal behavior of males in a persistent natural hybrid population. Most hybrid males possessed encounter calls functionally equivalent to those of G. victoriana, that were produced following exposure to playback of recorded advertisement calls presented at >110 dB peak sound pressure level. The territorial acoustic responses were not associated with an index of hybridity derived from the structure of the advertisement call, suggesting genetic and functional decoupling of the two components of the vocal repertoire; i.e., advertisement calls and encounter calls. This decoupling may be the result of sexual selection favouring those hybrids with pronounced territorial behavior and the associated vocalization, regardless of the structure of their advertisement calls.Communicated by A. Dominance relationships in solitary species may be an important factor in the maintenance of long-term, stable relationships among territorial neighbors. We examined the mediation of intraspecific interactions in a solitary, territorial kangaroo rat, Dipodomys heermanni, and tested whether unfamiliar kangaroo rats establish a dominance hierarchy and then decrease aggression and increase communication (via footdrumming and sandbathing) after initial interactions and the establishment of a social structure. Results revealed that both dominance hierarchies and familiarization with particular individuals are likely to mediate social interactions. After only one pairing per dyad, an almost linear dominance hierarchy emerged, which became perfectly linear after a 90-min familiarization period. During the course of subsequent interactions between dyad partners, fighting decreased and non-agonistic communication increased. Dominant kangaroo rats sandbathed at higher rates than subordinates, possibly to deposit scent to advertise competitive ability, whereas subordinate kangaroo rats footdrummed from inside the burrow, which seemed to indicate an unwillingness to interact. We suggest the kangaroo rats use a conditional strategy when deciding to fight (be dominant) or withdraw (be subordinate) by employing different modes to communicate status and minimize the potential risk of injury during unnecessarily prolonged fights.  相似文献

Summary Production of the major subcaste and its contribution to nest survival in the dimorphic ant Colobopsis nipponicus was examined in the field. In this species, the first major workers were reared in the second brood, very early in the colony life cycle. A field experiment demonstrated that artificial colonies without major workers could not survive, whereas colonies with at least one major worker per nest entrance could. Because major workers of C. nipponicus defend the nest entrance by head plugging, the lack of nest defenders in the experimental colonies seemed to be a major cause of nest failure. The defensive value of major workers was much higher than that of minor workers. Many artificial colonies without major workers were displaced by competitors for nest sites, especially by those of other conspecific colonies. In addition, more than 90% of field colonies nested with other conspecific colonies on the same tree. The early production of major workers in C. nipponicus seemed to be very important for the survival of incipient colonies.  相似文献

Tagged black-and-yellow rockfish Sebastes chrysomelas and gopher rockfish S. carnatus were observed in situ for 1 yr at 3 study sites off California, USA in order to determine the nature of their home ranges and territories. Three basic patterns of space use were identified: (1) a shelter hole located within a larger area of activity (in which the fish presumably fed, since its size increased with size of fish and decreased with prey density); (2) discontinuous home ranges, in which the shelter holes and feeding areas were separte; and (3) dispersed home ranges with little or no exclusive area. Fish in the first category were regarded as territorial, since their home ranges were defended and relatively exclusive. Because individuals did not patrol borders, however, territories often overlapped at their peripheries. In addition, some territory holders appeared to tolerate the sheltering of other fish within their territories, as long as these intruders left the territory during periods of activity. Some fish with discontinuous home ranges (commuters) may have been territorial, but others may have been forced to occupy suboptimal feeding areas. Fish in the third category (floaters) were regarded as nonterritorial; their activities were apparently limited to areas where they could escape the aggression of territory holders. The varying patterns appeared to develop through defense and accommodation during the turnover of individuals, with each fish securing shelter and feeding areas as these became available.  相似文献

Summary Magpie (Pica pica) brood defense against a human at the nest was studied in a Mediterranean population with low renesting potential. Variations in two defense measures recorded during 106 trials at 41 different nests were positively correlated with brood age. Ineremental effects due to the number of successive visits to nests by us, brood size, and the time in the breeding season were not significant. Partial correlation analyses showed that visit rate was not an important determinant of nest defense, which thus favors an adaptive explanation of nest defense patterns. Two functional hypotheses to account for the increase in defense intensity with brood age were tested: whether (1) increased parental defense serves to compensate the higher predation risk of older nests or (2) increased parental defense reflects the increasing reproductive value of nestlings as they grow older. Daily mortality and incidende of predation (estimated from contribution of whole-brood losses to total mortality) was higher early in the nestling period, hence providing weak evidence for the assumption on which hypothesis (1) is based. The timing of parental defense intensity did not mirror variations in predation risk for the nest but variations in reproductive value of the brood, as can be estimated from daily mortality, thus supporting hypothesis (2). Magpie parents increased defense intensity in response to premature escaping by almost fully-developed nestlings. Since such a response lowers predation risk for the offspring and increases their probability of survival, this finding supports hypothesis (2), but runs contrary to hypothesis (1). Parents also increased defense in response to play-backs of alarm calls uttered by nestlings during escaping episodes. It is argued that parents should continuously monitor the degree of offspring development in order to assess their reproductive value and that, by alarm calling, chicks honestly make their parents aware of the gain in reproductive value that results from enhancement in locomotory abilities that occur at the end of the nestling period.  相似文献

Summary The stingless bee Trigona (Tetragonisca) angustula has a sophisticated defense strategy against flying insect predators at the entrance of its nest. Groups of worker bees hover on both sides in front of the nest entrance tube, facing a flight corridor leading to the nest. Intruders which enter this corridor are attacked by these bees from the side and from behind and are forced to the ground by biting bees clinging to their wings. T. angustula is subject to predation by Lestrimelitta limao, a cleptobiotic stingless bee which performs organized raids on other nests to rob food supplies, larval provisions and nest constructing material. The presence of citral, released by L. limao during the raids, leads to a rapid increase in the number of hovering guard bees in front of T. angustula nests. This recruitment in response to citral suggests that the defense behavior in T. angustula has evolved under the pressure of L. limao raids and that citral functions in T. angustula as an alarm kairomone.  相似文献

1.  Colonies of Pheidole dentata employ a complex strategy of colony defense against invading fire ants. Their responses can be conveniently divided into the following three phases: (1) at low stimulation, the minor workers recruit nestmates over considerable distances, after which the recruited major workers (soldiers) take over the main role of destroying the intruders; (2) when the fire ants invade in larger numbers, fewer trails are laid, and the Pheidole fight closer to the nest along a shorter perimeter; (3) when the invasion becomes still more intense, the Pheidole abscond with their brood and scatter outward in all directions (Figs. 1, 4).
2.  Recruitment is achieved by a trail pheromone emitted from the poison gland of the sting. Majors can distinguish trail-laying minors that have just contacted fire ants, apparently by transfer of the body odor, and they respond by following the trails with more looping, aggressive runs than is the case in recruitment to sugar water. Majors are superior in fighting to the minors and remain on the battleground longer.
3.  The first phase of defense, involving alarm-recruitment, is evoked most strongly by fire ants and other members of the genus Solenopsis; the presence of a single fire ant worker is often sufficient to produce a massive, prolonged response (Figs. 2, 5, 6). In tests with Solenopsis geminata, it was found that the Pheidole react both to the odor of the body surface and to the venom, provided either of these chemical cues are combined with movement. Fire ants, especially S. geminata, are among the major natural enemies of the Pheidole, and it is of advantage for the Pheidole colonies to strike hard and decisively when the first fire ant scouts are detected. Other ants of a wide array of species tested were mostly neutral or required a large number of workers to induce the response. The alarm-recruitment response is not used when foragers are disturbed by human hands or inanimate objects. When such intrusion results in a direct mechanical disturbance of the nest, simulating the attack of a vertebrate, both minor and major workers swarm out and attack without intervening recruitment.

Summary Territorial fidelity and competition between males was studied in a population of individually marked willow warblers (Phylloscopus trochilus). After spending the winter in Africa males arrive in the study area in late April or the beginning of May. They can be separated into two categories, old colour-banded males that return for a new breeding attempt, and birds that are new to the study area. These new birds could either be birds that had bred the previous year returning to a different site, or more likely 1-year-old birds returning for their first breeding attempt. Old males show high site fidelity and are successful in retaining their territories from the preceding year. The few old males that switched territories between years seemed to do so in response to reduced breeding success in the preceding year. However, in 13 out of 14 cases when a new resident was already established on the previous resident's territory, the old male was successful in evicting the new resident. In a removal experiment both old and new birds were removed from their territories and then released when a replacement male had been established. All old males successfully managed to reclaim their original territories after escalated contests. None of the new males were successful and no fights were observed.  相似文献

Summary. An evolutionary scenario incorporating recent advances in phylogenetic research begins with an opisthobranch-pulmonate common ancestor that was herbivorous and had some diet-derived chemical defense. The Nudibranchia and their closest relatives, the Notaspidea, form a lineage the ancestors of which had switched to feeding upon sponges and deriving protection from metabolites contained in them. Subsequently there have been repeated shifts in food and defensive metabolites, and trends are evident in the ability to detoxify, sequester and utilize metabolites from food, as well as to synthesize defensive compounds de novo. The Notaspidea display a minor adaptive radiation that foreshadows a more extensive one in the various lineages of nudibranchs. This review emphasizes changes that have occurred within the Holohepatica, or dorid nudibranchs (order Doridacea). Their sister-group, the Cladohepatica, consists of three other orders, Dendronotacea, Arminacea, and Aeolidiacea, in which there has been a shift from sponges to Cnidaria as food. The Dendronotacea often feed upon Octocorallia, which combine spicules, chemical defense, and stinging capsules and thereby suggest a transition from feeding on sponges. A previous diet of Octocorallia is suggested by the defensive use of prostaglandins in the dendronotacean Tethys fimbria, which eats crustaceans. A shift to bryozoans in some Arminacea is accompanied by use of different metabolites. Dorid nudibranchs evidently began as sponge-feeders, but some lineages have shifted to a variety of other food organisms, and others have specialized in the kind of sponges they feed on and how they do it. There have been shifts to bryozoans (Ectoprocta) and ascidians (Chordata: Urochordata) that track metabolites rather than the taxonomy of the food. There is a crude correlation between the genealogy and the defensive metabolites of the sponge-feeding dorids. De novo synthesis is well documented in this order and the metabolites are appropriately positioned so as to have an adaptive effect. The hypothesis that the capacity for de novo synthesis was acquired by gene transfer across lineages is rejected, partly on the basis of different chirality of metabolites in the nudibranchs and their food organisms. Instead it is proposed that there has been a preadaptive phase followed by evolution in a retrosynthetic mode, with selection favoring enzymes that enhance the yield of end products that are already present in the food.
