This study suggested the first Korean site-specific ecological surface water quality criteria for the protection of ecosystems near an artillery range at a Korean military training facility. Surface water quality (SWQ) criteria in Korea address human health protection but do not encompass ecological criteria such as limits for metals and explosives. The first objective of this study was to derive site-specific SWQ criteria for the protection of aquatic ecosystems in Hantan River, Korea. The second objective was to establish discharge criteria for the artillery range to protect the aquatic ecosystems of Hantan River. In this study, we first identified aquatic organisms living in the Hantan River, including fishes, reptiles, invertebrates, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and amphibians. Second, we collected ecotoxicity data for these aquatic organisms and constructed an ecotoxicity database for Cd, Cu, Zn, TNT, and RDX. This study determined the ecological maximum permissible concentrations for metals and explosives based on the ecotoxicity database and suggested ecological surface water quality criteria for the Hantan River by considering analytical detection limits. Discharge limit criteria for the shooting range were determined based on the ecological surface water quality criteria suggested for Hantan River with further consideration of the dilution of the contaminants discharged into the river.  相似文献

Along with the increasing utilization of engineered nanoparticles, there is a growing concern for the potential environmental and health effects of exposure to these newly designed materials. Understanding the behavior of nanoparticles in the environment is a basic need. The present study aims to investigate the distribution and fate of ceria nanoparticles in an aquatic system model which consists of sediments, water, hornworts, fish and snails, using a radiotracer technique. Concentrations of ceria in the samples at regular time intervals were measured. Ceria nanoparticles were readily removed from the water column and partitioned between different organisms. Both snail and fish have fast absorption and clearance abilities. Hornwort has the highest bioaccumulation factors. At the end of the experiment, sediments accumulated most of the nanoparticles with a recovery of 75.7 ± 27.3% of total ceria nanoparticles, suggesting that sediments are major sinks of ceria nanoparticles.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to conduct a long-term site-specific risk assessment for zinc (Zn) susceptibility of bivalves, green mussel Perna viridis and hard clam Ruditapes philippinarum, based on published experimental data by linking the biologically-based damage assessment model with the subcellular partitioning concept. A comprehensive risk modeling framework was developed to predict susceptibility probability of two bivalve species exposed to waterborne Zn. The results indicated that P. viridis accumulates more Zn toxicity, whereas both toxic potency and the recovery rate of Zn are higher for R. philippinarum. We found that negative linear correlations exist in elimination-recovery and elimination-detoxification relationships, whereas a positive linear correlation was observed in recovery-detoxification relationships for bivalves exposed to waterborne Zn. Simulation results showed that the spatial differences of susceptibility primarily resulted from the variation of waterborne Zn concentration under field conditions. We found that R. philippinarum is more susceptible of Zn than P. viridis under the same exposure condition. Results also suggested that Zn posed no significant susceptibility risk to two bivalve species in Taiwan. We suggested that these two species can be used to biomonitor the water quality on Taiwan coastal areas.  相似文献

The influence of outdoor exposure conditions and ageing of contamination on the toxicity of zinc was investigated for the springtail Folsomia candida to evaluate the validity of a standardised soil toxicity test. In three successive years, animals were incubated in an experimentally contaminated field plot. During the first months after construction of the test field, total zine concentrations of the soil decreased rapidly due to leaching of excess zinc with rainwater, while increased sorption of the remaining residues resulted in a reduced bioavailability of the metal. Although variation between replicates was substantial, the EC50s for the effect of zinc on reproduction of F. candida determined in the field experiments differed by less than a factor of two from effect concentrations obtained in laboratory tests in which the same soil was used. Expression of the EC50s on the basis of water soluble zinc allowed for a comparison with effect concentrations estimated for other soil types. EC50s were comparable with literature data, which indicates that bioavailability of zinc is the main factor determining toxicity for F. candida. It is concluded that laboratory based toxicity data are suitable to predict effects of zinc for F. candida under outdoor conditions, provided that the bioavailability of zinc is determined accurately using water soluble concentrations.  相似文献

Phytotoxicity of heavy metal is the primary concern in applying biosolids (sewage sludge) to agricultural land. This study evaluates the changes in chemical speciation of Zn in three tropical soils of Taiwan measured with sequential extraction over a one-year period. Biosolids were applied to the soils at application rates of 10, 50 and 100 Mg ha(-1), and correlated diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) and sequential extraction as extract for prediction of Zn bioavailability to Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.). Experimental results indicated that the exchangeable (F1) and Fe-Mn oxide (F3) fractions in the sequential extractions increased with application rate of biosolids in the soils over time. Large amounts of Zn in the soils following the cessation of biosolids application were identified as soluble and were adsorbed by Fe-Mn oxides. The organically bound Zn, which is associated with readily decomposable carbon, is in limited amounts in the biosolid-treated soils. The DTPA-extractable concentrations of Zn in all biosolid-treated soils decreased over the time. A positive and significant correlation (r(2) = 0.96) was found between the Zn concentrations extracted with DTPA and sum of F1 and carbonate-bound (F2) fractions in the sequential extractions. Additionally, the concentrations of Zn extracted with DTPA were strongly correlated with the concentrations of Zn in the shoots of Chinese cabbages, indicating that F1+F2 in the sequential extractions was reliable for predicting Zn bioavailability to Chinese cabbage in the biosolid-treated soils.  相似文献

Acute toxicity tests were performed on nine different domestic species indigenous to China to determine 48 h LC(50) and 96 h LC(50) values for 2,4,6-TCP. In addition, 21 d survival-reproduction test with Daphnia magna, 30 d embryo-larval test with Carassius auratus, 60 d fry-juvenile test with Ctenopharyngodon idellus, 30 d early life stage test with Bufo bufo gargarizans and 96 h growth inhibition test with Scenedesmus obliqaus were also conducted to estimate lower chronic limit and upper chronic limit values. The final acute value (FAV) was 2.01 mg/l 2,4,6-TCP. Acute-to-chronic ratios ranged from 5.01 to 12.2. The final chronic value (FCV) and the final plant value (FPV) of 2,4,6-TCP were 0.226 and 2.24 mg/l respectively. Based on FAV, FCV and FPV for 2,4,6-TCP, a criteria maximum concentration of 1.01 mg/l and a criterion continuous concentration of 0.226 mg/l were derived. The results of this study provide useful data for deriving national or local water quality criteria for 2,4,6-TCP based on aquatic biota in China.  相似文献

Since the 1990s, the Lake Maggiore (Northern Italy) has been recognized as an aquatic environment contaminated by DDTs and other persistent organic pollutants, but to date just few studies were carried out to investigate the effects of pollution to aquatic organisms. The aim of this study was the application of a stepwise approach based on chemical data, a suite of biomarkers and the integration of their responses into a biomarker response index (BRI) to evaluate the site-specific quality assessment in different sampling stations of Lake Maggiore, one of the largest European lakes. We used as biological model the freshwater bivalve Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha). Several hundred bivalve specimens were sampled on May 2011 from eight sampling sites located along the lake shoreline. We measured levels of DDTs, PCBs, HCHs, HCB, and PAHs accumulated in D. polymorpha soft tissues by GC/MSn, while the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase, as well as the lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl content were evaluated in homogenates from native bivalves as oxidative stress indices. Moreover, DNA damage was investigated by the alkaline precipitation assay. Significant imbalances of enzymatic activity were found in mussels from most of the sampling sites, as well as notable increases of damage to macromolecules. Health status of mussels from Baveno was greatly affected by lake pollution, probably due to high levels of DDTs measured in this site, while a wide variability in biomarker responses was found in all the other stations. The application of a BRI allowed distinguishing impacts of pollution to bivalves, confirming mussels from Baveno as the most threatened and revealing that also the health status of bivalves from Suna, Brissago, Pallanza, and Laveno is affected. These evidences suggest the usefulness of a specific index to integrate all the biomarker endpoints in order to provide a correct environmental risk assessment.  相似文献

系统分析了中国水环境质量标准和污水排放标准的多样性和差异性,研究了水质标准体制,分析了水质标准执行过程中存在的问题.分析表明,过去中国水质标准的制订是以用水为目的,在执行过程中与以水环境保护的目标存在不协调;当前不同类型水质标准、国家标准与行业标准之间的衔接性和科学件较差,标准限值之间存在偏差和矛盾.同时,建议将来进一步明确水环境保护目标,加强部门间的协调,建立一套完整、科学、实用的水质标准体系.  相似文献

Current water quality standards for the protection of human health in Korea include 17 substances found in rivers and streams. Due to increasing concern over the release of hazardous chemicals into the aquatic environment, there has been a demand for additional water quality standards. Therefore, the Korean Ministry of the Environment plans to gradually increase the number of water quality standards to 30 substances, including 22 substances for protection of human health and 8 substances for protection of aquatic ecosystems by 2015. In this study, new water quality standards for protection of human health were established for 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde, and hexachlorobenzene. We selected candidate hazardous chemicals, conducted a human health risk assessment to determine priority chemicals, established water quality standards based on technical analyses and comparison with domestic and developed countries’ water quality standards, and conducted an expert review. Water quality standards for protection of aquatic ecosystems will be derived in the near future. This study describes how the water quality standards for protection of human health were developed and implemented. Current status, recent expansion, and future plans for water quality standards in Korea are also covered.  相似文献

The freshwater quality criteria of acetonitrile were studied on the basis of the features of the aquatic biota in China, and with reference to US EPA's guidelines. Acute tests were performed on 13 different species to determine 48h-EC50/96h-EC50 (or 96h-LC50) values for acetonitrile. 2ld survival-reproduction tests with Daphnia magna and growth inhibition tests with Lemna minor were also conducted to estimate lower chronic limit and upper chronic limit values. In the acute tests, Radix plicatula was the most sensitive species to acetonitrile followed by Chironomus sp., Cyprinus carpio and D. magna in turn. The final acute value of acetonitrile was 2290 mg/l. In the chronic tests, reproduction of daphnids was significantly reduced by acetonitrile at 320 mg/l. Acute-to-chronic ratios ranged from 2 to 15.8. A final chronic value of 413.9 mg/l was obtained and a final plant value was 1342 mg/I. A criterion maximum concentration (1145 mg/l) and a criterion continuous concentration (413.9 mg/l) were derived.  相似文献

Freshwater quality criteria for copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), aluminum (Al), and manganese (Mn) were developed with particular reference to aquatic biota in Malaysia, and based on USEPA’s guidelines. Acute toxicity tests were performed on eight different freshwater domestic species in Malaysia, which were Macrobrachium lanchesteri (prawn), two fish – Poecilia reticulata and Rasbora sumatrana, Melanoides tuberculata (snail), Stenocypris major (ostracod), Chironomus javanus (midge larvae), Nais elinguis (annelid), and Duttaphrynus melanostictus (tadpole), to determine 96-h LC50 values for Cu, Cd, Al, and Mn. The final acute values (FAVs) for Cu, Cd, Al, and Mn were 2.5, 3.0, 977.8, and 78.3 μg L?1, respectively. Using an estimated acute-to-chronic ratio (ACR) of 8.3, the value for final chronic value (FCV) was derived. Based on FAV and FCV, a Criterion Maximum Concentration (CMC) and a criterion Continuous Concentration (CCC) for Cu, Cd, Al, and Mn of 1.3, 1.5, 488.9, and 39.1 μg L?1 and 0.3, 0.36, 117.8, and 9.4 μg L?1, respectively, were derived. The results of this study provide useful data for deriving national or local water quality criteria for Cu, Cd, Al, and Mn based on aquatic biota in Malaysia. Based on LC50 values, this study indicated that R. sumatrana, M. lanchesteri, C. javanus, and N. elinguis were the most sensitive to Cu, Cd, Al, and Mn, respectively.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to assess the effects of black carbon, clay type and aging (1-1.5yr) on desorption and bioavailability of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in spiked artificial sediments. Tenax (a super sorbent)-mediated desorption was used to examine the effects of these parameters on the physicochemical availability of HCB. The Tenax-mediated desorption of HCB from the four aged artificial sediments exhibited biphasic kinetics. The fast desorbing fractions ranged from 64.8% to 22.3%, showing reductions of 4.0-18.9% compared with freshly-spiked sediments. Statistical analysis on the fast desorbing fractions showed that all three treatment effects (i.e., montmorillonite clay, black carbon content, and aging) were significant. Two sediments with higher black carbon content exhibited much greater aging effects (i.e., greater reduction in fast desorbing fraction) than the other two sediments without the addition of black carbon. For both freshly-spiked and aged sediments, the desorption resistant sediment-bound HCB (i.e., slow desorbing fraction) correlated reasonably well to previously reported rat fecal elimination of HCB, which is a measure of the non-bioavailable fraction of sediment-bound HCB. A similar correlation was also observed between fast desorbing fraction and previously reported accumulation of HCB in the rat body (carcass+skin). These observations suggest that physicochemical availability, as defined by the desorption of HCB from sediments, provides a reasonable prediction of the oral bioavailability of sediment-bound HCB to rats. These results showed that montmorillonite clay, black carbon and aging reduced physicochemical availability and ultimately bioavailability of sediment-bound HCB.  相似文献

Artificially prepared sediments were used to assess the effects of sediment composition on inorganic Hg partitioning, speciation and bioavailability. Organic coating in sediment greatly increased the Hg partitioning and the amount of bioavailable Hg bound with the clay and the Fe and Mn oxides, but had little effect on that bound with the quartz and calcium carbonate as a result of weaker binding of humic acids and fulvic acids. The clay content increased the concentration of Hg in the sediments but inhibited the gut juice extraction due to the strong binding of Hg-organic matter (OM) complexes. Most Hg in the sediments was complexed by OM (mainly distributed in the organo-complexed phase and the strongly complexed phase), and the Hg-OM complexes (especially Hg in the strongly complexed phase) in sediments contributed much to gut juice extraction. Redistribution of Hg-OM complexes between sediments and gut juices may occur during gut juice extraction and modify Hg bioavailability and speciation in sediments.  相似文献
