The objective of this paper is to describe the Tennessee Valley Authority's efforts and plans in designing an operating and maintenance program that will ensure maximum performance of the electrostatic precipitators at our power generating stations. Detailed operating and maintenance manuals are being prepared for each plant for the use of plant personnel. These manuals include instructions on operation, maintenance, and testing of the precipitators. Instructions on internal and external equipment inspections to be performed during unit operation, emergency and scheduled outages, and problem diagnostic procedures are included to help the plant personnel solve problem areas. Performance curves are included in the manuals which show the effect of gas volume flow, gas temperature, gas resistivity, coal changes, and loss of transformer-rectifier sets on the precipitator performance. In addition, opacity monitors that record continuous opacity readings are being installed at all our plants to assist the plant in monitoring precipitator performance. Full-time operating and maintenance crews are being organized at the plants to monitor and maintain the precipitator and ash-removal systems. Also, a staff of technical personnel is being organized at the central office to provide technical advice and assistance in design, operation, and maintenance problems and liaison and coordination for all the plants concerning the precipitators. Periodic precipitator field inspections, performance and operating parameter optimization testing, and review of the equipment operating logs are made by the central office technical personnel. Recommendations and technical assistance are then furnished to the plant with regard to the precipitator overall performance and operating characteristics.  相似文献

This paper will focus on the demonstration of hazardous waste cleanup technologies in the field. The technologies will be at the pilot- or full-scale, and further referred to as field-scale. The main objectives of demonstration at the field-scale are development of reliable performance and cost data. Technology demonstrations provide performance, cost effectiveness, and reliability data so that potential technology users have sufficient information to make effective decisions as to the applicability of the technology to a specific situation. The demonstration and evaluation of a technology should be conducted with the purpose of characterizing performance, need for pre- and post-processing of the waste feed, identification of waste type and constituents applicable to the technology, system throughput, problems and limitations of the technology, and operating and maintenance costs. The successful, reliable operation of a power plant flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system depends largely on a good program of maintenance. Identifying the FGD equipment that is most critical to an FGD system’s overall reliability or its ability to meet emission regulations plays an important role in determining the extent of a maintenance program for a particular site. FGD maintenance programs vary considerably, depending on site-specific requirements and the support of plant owners. Many owners are reluctant to spend money on FGD maintenance because an FGD system is a nonproductive part of a power plant; however, a good maintenance program can result in longer equipment life, improved equipment performance, increased system availability, better safety, and lower operating costs. This paper uses wet and dry lime FGD systems to illustrate the advantages of good maintenance and the consequences of poor maintenance. Examples of specific tasks for preventive, scheduled, planned, and emergency maintenance are described. Also, because of the importance of FGD maintenance personnel, a section on organization and training is included.  相似文献

This paper presents an overview on air pollution assessments of new fossil energy technologies for baseload electric generating plants. The discussion is oriented towards those who must understand the broad issues affecting the design and performance of such power plants. It is motivated by the potential air pollution problems caused by the near doubling of coal use projected for the next 15 years.

The paper first reviews the applicable emissions performance standards for these plants, as well as predictions of likely future standards needed to protect the environment. The conclusion is reached that significantly tighter emissions standards will apply in the future.

Next, the cost, emissions performance, and development status of the three major technology groups for coal fired baseload plants are reviewed. It is observed that while all of the technologies can meet the current standards, only the Baseline plant with Advanced Control Technology can meet future standards, without unreasonable increases in electrical generation costs. Furthermore, since Advanced Direct Combustion Technologies and Fuel Conversion Technologies are in very early stages of development, only the Baseline plant with Advanced Control Technology will be available to the utilities in the near term. This is because it will be evolved from the current commercial Baseline Technology.

Hence, it is concluded that the utilities will use mainly the Baseline coal fired plant with Advanced Control Technology to protect the environment for the next 15-20 years.  相似文献

Operation and maintenance and performing correct system monitoring of fabric filters is discussed. The anticipation of future problems at the time of start-up and the necessity of maintaining correct records on the system to assist in later troubleshooting is stressed. When all is going well, the fabric filter requires little but routine maintenance on moving parts, which is usually well identified in the service manuals. Problems usually appear as excessive emissions, high pressure drop, or inadequate bag life. In order to find the cause of these problems, one must have maintained sufficient Information on the system to identify what changed and when. The problems and priorities of air quality maintenance planning will depend in large part on the specific characteristics of a given region. Electric utilities have made significant progress in recent years in designing and operating baghouses for collection of coal fly ash. As a result, early concerns with high operating and maintenance requirements and short bag lives are no longer an issue. With increasingly stringent air emissions regulations and imminent revision of the Clean Air Act, baghouses have become an attractive particulate collection option for utilities.

In order to keep its member utilities apprised of the latest design and operation and maintenance experience with baghouses, the Electric Power Research Institute has been conducting surveys of utility baghouse user experience. This paper presents results from the latest survey, conducted in 1989. A previous survey was conducted in 1985. The 1989 survey was conducted using questionnaires mailed to the utilities, telephone inquiries, and plant visits. This paper discusses the general trends observed in baghouse design, performance, operation and maintenance.  相似文献

This work provides information concerning possible global environmental implications and personnel safety aspects that should be considered during the commercial uses of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). SF6 is an anthropogenically produced compound, mainly used as a gaseous dielectric in gas insulated switchgear power installations. It is a potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential, and its concentration in the earth atmosphere is rapidly increasing. During its working cycle, SF6 decomposes under electrical stress, forming toxic byproducts that are a health threat for working personnel in the event of exposure. Several precautions are recommended to avoid personnel exposure to toxic byproducts: oxyfluoride levels or other byproduct concentrations in the operating gas matrix should be traced to predetermine the overall gas toxicity; contaminants should be systematically considered during maintenance, chamber evacuation and system opening process; small SF6 quantities leaking into air or stagnated pollutant concentrations in the operating field should be analyzed and compared to the threshold limit values and permissible exposure levels. New system design rules (i.e., hermetically sealed gas compartments, gas recycling or disposal in the field area) and different handling policies--both during maintenance and final disposal--now should be considered globally to provide for environmental and personnel safety.  相似文献

Different ways for modeling the impact of vehicle emission inspection and maintenance programs on fleet hydrocarbon emissions are examined. A dynamic model is developed for forecasting fleet emissions in which individual vehicle performance is modeled as a stochastic process and vehicle emissions are tracked over time. Emissions inspection and repair are incorporated into the model, allowing for the stochastic aspects of both testing and repair. This model is compared to EPA’s model for evaluating the impact of vehicle emissions inspection and maintenance. We find that the way vehicle emission equipment deterioration overtime is modeled is important for forecasting emissions from the fleet and for assessing the success of inspection and maintenance programs. For inspection programs, we find that factors such as the proportion of vehicles tested, and repair effectiveness and duration have the greatest impact on emission reductions. The ability of different emission testing regimes to identify polluting vehicles has less impact on a program’s overall potential for emissions reduction. Policy recommendations for I&M testing and predictions of emission reduction credits from these tests will depend in important ways on the methods used in the underlying emissions models.  相似文献

Baghouse operation and maintenance is probably the most serious problem area of fabric filter operations. Committee TC-1 (Particulates) of the Air Pollution Control Association recently surveyed baghouse installations in'the United States for the purpose of gathering information on operation and maintenance procedures and problems. One hundred thirty-three questionnaires were completed and returned. In this paper, the results of a comprehensive analysis of these data are described and interpreted. A multiple-choice type of compilation of the responses has been used to permit statistical interpretation of the results. Due to the length of the questionnaire and the tables which resulted from the analysis, these are described but not included in the following paper. The suitability of stormwater harvested from pervious pavement system (PPS) structures for reuse purposes was investigated in conditions where glyphosate-containing herbicides (GCH) are applied as part of PPS maintenance procedure. The experiment was based on the four-layered design previously described as detailed in CIRIA C582. Results indicated that the highest sodium absorption ratio (SAR) of 1.6 recorded in this study, was less than that at which loss of permeability begins to occur as well as deterioration of matrix structure. Furthermore, the maximum electrical conductivity (ECw) of 2990 μS cm?1, recorded for 7200 mg L?1 concentration (GCH) was slightly below the unstable classification range at which salinity problems related to water quality occur such that salts accumulate in the root zone to the extent that crop yields are adversely affected. However, GCH concentration of 720 mg L?1 was within ‘permissible’ range while that of 72 mg L?1 was within ‘excellent’ range. Current study raises some environmental concerns owing to the overall impact that GCH at concentrations above 72 mg L?1 exerts on the net performance of the organic decomposers, heavy metal and hydrocarbon release from the system and thus, should be further investigated. However, effluent from all the test models including those dosed with high GCH concentration of 7200 mg L?1 do not pose any threat in terms of infiltration or deterioration associated with salinity although, there are indications that high dosage of the herbicide could lead to an elevated electrical conductivity of the recycled water.

The performance characteristics of commercially available sulfur dioxide monitors were determined. Con-ductimetric, colorimetric, and coulometric analyzers were investigated. During this phase of the study, characteristics that were more closely related to field operation were studied. These included comparability of data among the instruments over a period of time, weekly calibration drift, maintenance requirements (including operating cost), unattended operation performance, and the effect of rotameter changes on calibration. The methodology and apparatus used to determine each operational parameter are described. The results of this study should be useful in the selection of instruments for monitoring sulfur dioxide.  相似文献

The basic oxygen process of steel manufacture evolves a large volume of gas at high temperature during the oxygen blow. This gas contains finely divided oxide particles that are removed in gas-cleaning equipment. Either electrostatic precipitators or water scrubbers are commonly used for the purpose. These devices are quite efficient but breakdowns, usually in the auxiliary equipment, are frequent. Maintenance problems arise primarily from the high temperature of the gases which warps and cracks the plates in the hood that draws the gases to the cleaning device, and from erosion of piping caused by abrasive particles moving at high velocity. This paper presents a number of case histories of BOP gas-cleaning installations, details maintenance problems, and discusses corrective measures that have been adopted. It gives reasons why merely appropriating a large sum of money for cleaning devices does not always guarantee full abatement of air pollution from the basic oxygen process.  相似文献

Environmental problems are getting more serious in almost every region of Turkey. They occur for many reasons and take many forms. Canakkale City has potential for both domestic and international tourism, because of its rich historical past and natural and cultural resources. However, in common with other parts of the country, Canakkale faces environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, solid wastes, noise pollution, and negative effects on flora and fauna. The maintenance of historical and architectural texture, and the establishment of new settlement areas in suitable parts of the city, are not taken into consideration sufficiently when investments are made in both transportation and industrial areas. This research was conducted under three main headings: analysis, evaluation and synthesis. The aim was to make some recommendations dealing with the domestic problems, such as the improvement of the city as a contemporary settlement, the development of urban settlements and industrialisation, and the improvement of the lifestyle of the city residents.  相似文献
