Urban ambient air quality trend analysis was evaluated as an alternative to rollback analysis to estimate vehicle emission standards needed to achieve national ambient air quality standards. Examination of the trends of monthly maximum 8 hour average carbon monoxide concentrations, central business district traffic activity, and emission rates from vehicles on the road suggests that the automotive exhaust emission standard for carbon monoxide derived in response to the requirements of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970 may be ten times too severe. The excessive stringency of the vehicle emission standard for carbon monoxide was confirmed by two different analyses of the correlation between annual mean carbon monoxide concentration and frequency of occurrence of carbon monoxide concentrations above the level of the 8-hour standard. One correlation analysis using all available CAMP data involved an empirical approach and the other assumed that carbon monoxide concentrations are described by the lognormal distribution. Based on the analysis of CAMP air quality data, a vehicle carbon monoxide emission standard of approximately 29 grams per mile appears adequate to meet the ambient air quality standard. The large difference between the results of this analysis and the 1976 Federal vehicle carbon monoxide emission standard indicates the advisability of applying this methodology to verification of the standards for hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen.  相似文献

Recent investigations have indicated that ambient air CO measurements may not reflect population exposure to CO. The lack of correlation may be due to improper siting of CO instruments, improper interpretation of air quality data, or both. Studies of population carboxy-hemoglobin levels are evaluated and compared with ambient air data.,

No significant correlation was found between median population COHb levels and reductions in CO concentrations required to meet ambient air standards when calculations used to estimate reductions were based on the second highest 8 hour average. However, calculated reductions based on annual average concentrations and a trend analysis technique correlated significantly with COHb levels in five cities from which both CAMP and COHb data were available.

Studies to determine the nature of the relationship between ambient air CO concentrations and population COHb levels are needed. The differences between the Occupational Safety and Health Act Regulations and the National Ambient Air Standards for carbon monoxide should be scrutinized to determine if a redefinition of the standards or their applicability is warranted. A reevaluation of the controls necessary to make reductions in population COHb burden may be necessary.  相似文献

This study uses monitoring data collected at the Taipei Aerosol Supersite from March 2002 to February 2008 to analyze characteristics such as seasonal fluctuations, diurnal variations, and photochemical-related variations of PM2.5 chemical compositions. The results indicate that the average of PM2.5 mass concentration in Taipei during this period is 30.3 ± 16.0 μg m?3. The highest average concentration of PM2.5 components is that of sulfate, which accounts for 21.1% of the PM2.5 mass, followed by organic carbon (OC) at 15.9%, nitrate at 5.8%, and elemental carbon (EC) at 5.4%. Concentrations of EC, OC, and nitrate have distinctive but similar seasonal fluctuations, which is highest in spring and lowest in fall. Sulfate concentration has less seasonal fluctuations, and the highest value appears during the fall. Similarly, concentrations of EC, OC, and nitrate have notable diurnal variations; however, the diurnal variation of sulfate concentration is not very apparent. These observation data show that EC, OC, and nitrate in PM2.5 in the Taipei metropolis come mainly from local emissions, while sulfate comes mainly from the regional transport of pollutants. This is likely because Taiwan is located on the lee zone of the Asian prevailing winds from fall to spring; its air quality is frequently affected by the transport of air pollutants from Mainland China. In addition, the extent of increase in aerosols is much higher than that of CO, indicating the formation of secondary aerosol when photochemical activity is strong. Based on six years of observation data, this study explores three potential scenarios to set up Taiwan's PM2.5 air quality standard (AQS). The analysis indicates that the optimum standard for 24-h air quality of PM2.5 should be around 50 μg m?3.  相似文献

A recently completed study has shown that emissions of participate, carbon monoxide, and organics (including polycyclic organic matter) are relatively high from residential woodburning stoves and fireplaces when compared to emissions from residential gas- and oil-fired furnaces. Since these emissions include a number of potentially hazardous compounds; the trend toward greater residential wood usage can have a negative impact on local ambient air quality. EPA is currently studying ways to operate existing stoves and design new stoves to minimize air pollutant emissions.  相似文献

An air quality survey technique for measuring the horizontal spatial variation of carbon monoxide concentrations in urban areas is described; it was used to determine how representative an urban air monitoring station is of concentrations throughout the city.

The survey technique was applied in San Jose, Calif., where 1128 samples were collected over a six-month period and were compared with the values recorded simultaneously at the urban air monitoring station. All samples were collected at “breathing height” within a 13-square-mile grid which included the downtown area as well as surrounding residential and industrial locations. Three basic sampling strategies were employed to answer specific questions about the distribution of carbon monoxide concentration: (7) walking sampling, in which samples were obtained while walking along the sidewalks of congested downtown streets, (2) random spatial sampling, in which samples were collected at randomly selected points in the urban grid, and (3) specialized sampling in the immediate vicinity of the air monitoring station.

The results indicate that pedestrians on downtown streets in San Jose can be exposed to concentrations above the federal air quality standards without these values being observed at the air monitoring station. There also is evidence that, at any instant of time, similar values of carbon monoxide exist throughout this city (within a 13-square mile area), provided that measurements are not made in close proximity to streets. Furthermore, the higher concentrations observed in the immediate vicinity of streets decrease quite rapidly with increasing horizontal distance from these streets.

These findings, in the view of the authors, raise serious doubts as to whether it is possible to determine if air quality standards as currently defined are actually being met in urban areas using data from present-day air monitoring stations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Present paper represents the spatio-temporal variation of air quality and performances of geostatistical tools for the identification of pollutants zone in various districts of Assam (India). Geographic Information System (GIS) and geostatistical analysis were utilized to estimate the spatio-temporal variations (2015–2017) of gaseous and particulate air pollutants. Data of 23 fixed monitoring stations were collected from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). It was observed that SO2 and NOx concentrations are the major pollutants to the deterioration of air quality in Assam State. Exploratory data analysis was considered for the determination of spatial and temporal patterns of air pollutants. Air Quality index (AQI) was calculated based on the air pollutants and particulate matter. Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation techniques were used to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of air quality in Assam. Cross-validation is applied to evaluate the accuracy of interpolation methods in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Nash–Sutcliffe Equation (NSE) and Accuracy Factor (ACFT). In 2015, the high value of AQI portrayed in the central and northeast of the state. In 2016, the central and entire east of the study area was recorded the highest value of AQI. In 2017, it was observed that mostly the central part of the state recorded the high value of AQI. The spatio-temporal variation trend of air pollutants provides sound scientific basis for its management and control. This information of air pollution congregation would be valuable for urban planners and decision architects to efficiently administer air quality for health and environmental purposes.  相似文献

A network of 10 stations, with passive sampling for VOCs (including benzene), NO2, and SO2, over 2-week periods, grab sampling for CO, and 48-h pumped sampling for PM10, was set up to make an air quality survey for 12 months around Aberdeen Harbour. Benzene, CO, SO2 and PM10 were always well below the AQS target values. However, NO2 frequently showed a pronounced gradient across the harbour reaching its highest concentrations at the city end, indicating that the road traffic was the principal source of the pollution. This was backed up by the predominance of aromatics in the VOCs in the city centre, derived from petrol engined vehicles, compared to the predominance of alkanes and alkenes around the docks, derived from diesel engined heavy trucks and possibly ships. Black carbon on the PM10 filters also showed a gradient with highest levels in the city centre. It is proposed that for such surveys in future, NO2 and black carbon would be the two most informative parameters. This emissions inventory has shown first, that trucks contribute very little to the total, and second, that the ro-ro ferries are the major contributors as they burn light fuel oil while the oil platform supply vessels burn low-sulphur marine gas oil with around 0.1% S. When the whole picture of the emissions from the city is considered, the emissions from the harbour constitute only a small part.  相似文献

In air quality monitoring studies, continuous sampling is capable of reflecting real time variation of gas levels, however, with a margin of uncertainty related to the response time of the sensor and to the speed of concentration fluctuation. In contrast, grab sampling allows the determination of average gas concentration over the whole sampling period eliminating thus the uncertainties associated with the continuous method. As studies of in-vehicle carbon monoxide (CO) exposure often show rapidly fluctuating CO levels and are increasingly using the continuous electrochemical sensing method, the present activity aims at validating the suitability of the latter method for this monitoring task. For this purpose, an electrochemical CO sensing monitor was used to continuously monitor CO level inside and outside of a vehicle moving in an urban area, and to analyze the content of concomitantly taken grab samples. Trip-average CO levels measured using the two testing methods were compared. For CO levels higher than the instrument detection limit (1 ppm), the observed percent difference between continuous and grab sampling results varied within a fairly acceptable range (0.6–15.4%). The regression of continuous sampling data against grab sampling data revealed an average error of 6.9%, indicating the suitability of the continuous electrochemical method for monitoring in-vehicle and exterior average CO concentration under typical urban traffic conditions.  相似文献

The available national annual air pollution emissions are based on mass. Different air pollutants have greatly different toxicities per unit mass, hence the emissions should be rated by effect, not by mass, so that more sensible priorities can be set in control research and regulation. Effect factors are derived from the health effect literature indirectly by using the national ambient air quality standards. The resulting analysis by effects shows transportation to be still the largest source as it is in the mass analysis while hydrocarbons become the largest pollutants by effect compared to carbon monoxide being the largest pollutant by mass.  相似文献

Concern about the potential for indoor air pollution has prompted recent surveys of radon and NO2 concentrations In homes and personal exposure studies of volatile organics, carbon monoxide and pesticides, to name a few. The statistical problems in designing sample surveys that measure the physical environment are diverse and more complicated than those encountered in traditional surveys of human attitudes and attributes. This paper addresses issues encountered when designing indoor air quality (IAQ) studies. General statistical concepts related to target population definition, frame creation, and sample selection for area household surveys and telephone surveys are presented. The implications of different measurement approaches are discussed, and response rate considerations are described.  相似文献

This work describes an event of unusually large mixing ratios of carbon monoxide, CO, observed during a typical rainy season time period in central Brazil, when concentrations are expected to be at low levels. CO measurements were performed in Campo Grande (20.02 degrees S; 54.5 degrees W), from July 2001 to October 2002, covering entire periods of the dry and wet seasons. From January to June, average CO was 131 parts per billion by volume (ppbv). During November/December, average CO is about 180 ppbv. On November 13, 521.9 and 565.6 ppbv were observed. It is shown that for this special event, in which there was practically no fire activity at or near the site, air parcels reaching the site were enriched with fire products from regions much further north, near the equatorial region, where the fire activity is delayed in time, compared to central Brazil.  相似文献

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in order to provide the public with an overall assessment of daily air quality. PSI values are determined from measured concentrations of five criteria air pollutants carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter (PM-10). In general, the PSI can be considered a useful tool in the assessment of air quality as it relates to health effects. However, the current method of PSI calculation is subject to certain inherent limitations. These limitations include the fact that the PSI neglects the role of synergism between the individual pollutants in affecting air quality and health. It is very likely that the combination of certain pollutants is more harmful than each acting individually. Since the general population is exposed to more than one of the criteria pollutants at a given time, revising the current PSI methodology to account for such synergism would be useful and helpful to the public. In the current work, two methodologies for synergistic PSI calculation have been evaluated. The first option (Option 1) is dominated by the principle of threshold levels. When further research determines more accurate levels, the methodology may be of value for future synergistic PSI evaluations. The second option (Option 2) is an attempt to incorporate the correlation of pollutant concentrations with health effects (as determined by increased hospital admissions) into the synergism evaluation. The underlying philosophy of this methodology holds the most promise for accurate synergistic PSI calculation. Comprehensive research and experimentation would be beneficial in creating a more accurate PSI function equation. The main advantage of these hypothetical methodologies is that the current PSI method would still be valid for initial PSI calculation. The dissimilarity is in the calculation of the critical (i.e. reportable) PSI value. It is no longer a matter of the highest PSI value among the pollutants being an accurate representative of air quality. Instead, each of the PSI values obtained is applied to a separate equation to determine a synergistic PSI. When above-average pollutant concentrations are recorded, the possibility of synergistic behavior increases and would be demonstrated with the application of both options. The advantage of Option 1 (versus Option 2) is that the equation was derived from a recognized approach to synergism in combination with the ideas of threshold levels. The advantage of Option 2 is that it is an attempt to correlate concentration levels with health effects observed in the health industry. It is possible that a combination of both philosophies will eventually lead to the development of a synergistic PSI methodology worthy of approval by the EPA.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The air quality in five Finnish ice arenas with different volumes, ventilation systems, and resurfacer power sources (propane, gasoline, electric) was monitored during a usual training evening and a standardized, simulated ice hockey game. The measurements included continuous recording of carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations, and sampling and analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Emissions from the ice resurfacers with combustion engines caused indoor air quality problems in all ice arenas. The highest 1-hour average CO and NO2 concentrations ranged from 20 to 33 mg/m3 (17 to 29 ppm) and 270 to 7440 µg/m3 (0.14 to 3.96 ppm), respectively. The 3-hour total VOC concentrations ranged from 150 to 1200 µg/m3. The highest CO and VOC levels were measured in the arena in which a gasoline-fueled resurfacer was used. The highest NO2 levels were measured in small ice arenas with propane-fueled ice resurfacers and insufficient ventilation.

In these arenas, the indoor NO2 levels were about 100 times the levels measured in ambient outdoor air, and the highest 1-hour concentrations were about 20 times the national and World Health Organization (WHO) health-based air quality guidelines. The air quality was fully acceptable only in the arena with an electric resurfacer. The present study showed that the air quality problems of indoor ice arenas may vary with the fuel type of resurfacer and the volume and ventilation of arena building. It also confirmed that there are severe air quality problems in Finnish ice arenas similar to those previously described in North America.  相似文献

An attempt to develop medical air quality guides are recently made in Sweden. Even if air pollution is present in only fairly small amounts, problems frequently arise especially concerning nuisance reactions. Present regulations do not provide a basis for a standardized treatment of air pollution problems. The national air pollution situation was discussed and a survey of the literature was performed to collect data concerning current air pollutants. For sulfur dioxide a 30 day value of eight pphm and a two hour value of 25 pphm was recommended. It was further recommended to keep the carbon monoxide concentration as low as possible with an eight hour value of 30 ppm as an absolute maximum. For carcinogenic and mutagenic substances it was also recommended to keep the values as low as possible. Although available data did not support complete medical guides in all cases it was decided rather to have the above approximations than to leave the air pollution situation uncontrolled.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with uncertainties involved in projecting ambient air quality. Ambient air quality was projected by assuming a linear dependence on estimated future emissions. Future automotive emissions were estimated by a method recommended by EPA. Projections were made for the locations reported to have the highest ambient air concentrations of each pollutant; Chicago for carbon monoxide and the California South Coast Air Basin for hydrocarbon and oxidant. The sensitivity of the projections to several input parameters was determined.

The uncertainty in projection of air quality due to the use of a maximum, once-per-year concentration is large. For example, the reduction in total CO emissions in Chicago in 1975, necessary to meet the air quality standard, was as high as 68% or as low as 26%, depending on whether the historic high, 8 hr average concentration of 44 ppm or the 1970 maximum of 21 ppm was used. The effects of uncertainties in growth rates and fraction of emissions attributed to the automobile were also sizeable. Differences in automotive growth rate had a large near-term effect on projected concentrations, while differences in nonautomotive growth rate or fraction of emissions attributed to the automobile had a large long-term effect. The effect of 1975 interim automotive emission standards on projected air quality was negligible when compared with projected air quality based on the previous Federal automotive emission standards for 1975.  相似文献

A mobile exposure and air pollution measurement system was developed and used for on-freeway ultrafine particle health effects studies. A nine-passenger van was modified with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration system that can deliver filtered or unfiltered air to an exposure chamber inside the van. State-of-the-art instruments were used to measure concentration and size distribution of fine and ultrafine particles and the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), black carbon (BC), particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass, and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) inside the exposure chamber. This paper presents the construction and technical details of the van and air pollutant concentrations collected in 32 2-hr runs on two major Los Angeles freeways, Interstate 405 (1-405; mostly gasoline traffic) and Interstate 710 (1-710; large proportion of heavy-duty diesel traffic). More than 97% of particles were removed when the flow through the filter box was switched from bypass mode to filter mode while the vehicle was driving on both freeways. The filtration system thus provides a great particulate matter exposure contrast while keeping gas-phase pollutant concentrations the same. Under bypass mode, average total particle number concentration observed inside the exposure chamber was around 8.4 x 10(4) and 1.3 x 10(5) particles cm(-3) on the I-405 and the I-710 freeways, respectively. Bimodal size distributions were consistent and similar for both freeways with the first mode around 16-20 nm and the second mode around 50-55 nm. BC and particle-bound PAH concentrations were more than two times greater on the I-710 than on the I-405 freeway. Very weak correlations were observed between total particle number concentrations and other vehicular pollutants on the freeways.  相似文献

We present a study of the seasonal and diurnal variability of carbon monoxide and selected volatile organic compounds in the Los Angeles area. Measurements were made during four different nine-day field campaigns in April/May, September, and November, 2007, and February, 2008, at the Mt. Wilson sampling site, which is located at an elevation of approximately 1700 m in the San Gabriel Mountains overlooking Pasadena and the Los Angeles basin. The results were used to characterize the Mt. Wilson site as a representative location for monitoring integrated Los Angeles basin emissions, and, by reference to carbon monoxide emissions, to estimate average annual emissions. The considerable seasonal variability of many hydrocarbons, in both their measured mixing ratios and their relationship to carbon monoxide, was indicative of variable source strengths. Most interestingly, perturbation of C4 hydrocarbon ratios suggested an enhanced role for chlorine chemistry during the month of September, likely as the result of Los Angeles’ coastal location. Such coastal influence was confirmed by observations of enhanced mixing ratios of marine halocarbons, as well as air mass back trajectories.  相似文献

The General Motors Research Laboratories and the Sloan-Kettering Institue for Cancer Research are collaborating to determine the contribution by automotive vehicles to the polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in city air. Sampling of particulate matter at the rate of 140 M3/min (5000 cfm) was carried out at two heavily-trafficked sites in Detroit and one suburban site in Warren, Michigan. Carbon monoxide was determined continuously, and particulate matter was analyzed for “tar,” polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, lead, vanadium, and sulfates. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in automobile exhaust gas are assumed to be dispersed in air along with carbon monoxide or lead from automobiles. It is further assumed that automobiles are the sole source of carbon monoxide and lead in the atmosphere. Concentrations of carbon monoxide and lead in exhaust gas and in the air are utilized to estimate the percentage of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in the air attributable to automobiles. The mean automobile contributions to benzo(a)pyrene in the air, based on lead concentrations, were 18% at a Freeway Interchange, 5% in a downtown commercial area, and 42% in suburban Warren. The average concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene at the sites were 6 μg/103 M3, 7 μg/103 M3 and 1 μg/103 M3, respectively. Mean contributions based on carbon monoxide concentrations were approximately twice the levels based on lead concentrations. Benzo(a)pyrene and benz(a)anthracene in air were not statistically related to carbon monoxide or lead in air, but were higher in winter than in summer, probably because of the higher levels of these materials emitted in space heating combustion in winter.  相似文献

Air quality is shown as a function of averaging times of five minutes to one year for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides, oxidant, and sulfur dioxide in Chicago, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D. C. Concentrations are approximately lognormally distributed for all pollutants in all cities for all averaging times. Maximum concentration is inversely proportional to averaging time to an exponent. The exponent is a function of the standard geometric deviation. General air quality and control parameters are derived and shown for one example, nitrogen oxides in Washington, D. C. These values are compared to one air quality standard.  相似文献

Simultaneous reduction of SO2 and NO by catalyzed reaction with carbon monoxide at space rates approaching 104 vol/vol/hr has been shown. The reaction of sulfur dioxide with carbon monoxide results in the formation of carbon dioxide and elemental sulfur. Nitric oxide reacts with carbon monoxide to form carbon dioxide and molecular nitrogen. Metals supported on alumina appear to be the preferred catalysts. Among the effective metals are copper, silver, and palladium. A side reaction of carbon monoxide with elemental sulfur to form carbonyl sulfide requires that the initial amount of carbon monoxide be stoichio-metric for the amount of sulfur dioxide plus nitric oxide present. A furnace employing this method would have to be operated at low excess air, near stoichiometric fuel/air, or possibly slightly on the rich side.  相似文献
